The sensitivity evaluation of a vanadium pentoxide/poly-o-methoxyaniline hybrid material (V2O5/POMA) using casting deposition for the preparation of an ammonia gas sensor was investigated herein. V2O5/POMA was produced by the intercalation of V2O5 via sol–gel and o-methoxyaniline monomers. V2O5/POMA thin film deposition onto electrodes was performed by casting. The electrical studies confirmed that V2O5/POMA exhibited increased complex impedance as a function of increasing ammonia concentration. The conductivity of the film decreased with increasing ammonia concentration due to the de-doping process. According to theoretical adjustment, a significant increase in the bulk and interfacial electrical resistance in the presence of ammonia was observed. The combination of these effects contributed to the high sensitivity of the prepared film in both the real and imaginary components of the complex impedance for ammonia gas in a range of 0 to 100 ppm, which indicated that the film is a good candidate for use as an ammonia sensing material.

This paper describes a variety of experiments that reveal the potential application of impedance spectroscopy (IS) measurements to enhance performance of ultrathin polyaniline (PANI)-based films on flexible substrate to control ammonia gas exposure in the 0–20 ppm range. Further, the device is mechanically robust for making electrical contact without lithography. We have employed the IS technique to proper adjust the optimal operation frequency of an easy-to-process, inexpensive and user-friendly PANI-based resistometric detectors in which drift current and delay problems related to electrode effects and dielectric absorption of PANI are insignificant. These requirements place emphasis upon the material and device configuration, and the range of frequencies from 10 to 100 Hz corresponds to the ideal working region to operate the device to unify sensibility inside 5%, reproducibility, linearity, stability and low response time (

The model considers AC conduction in an inhomogeneous medium represented by a two-dimensional model of resistor network. The conductivity between two neighboring sites in the polymer matrix and the semiconductor particles is assumed to obey the random free energy barrier model and the Drude model, respectively. The real and imaginary parts of the AC conductivity were determined using the transfer-matrix technique, and the statistical model was applied to experimental data of thin films composed of polyaniline (PANI) and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) nanoparticles. The conductivity critical exponent (s) obtained in two dimensions for PANI/ITO films below the percolation threshold was found to be 2.7, which is greater than the universal value of s described by the classical percolation theory (s = 1.3). This non-universality is explained by the existence of a local electric field distribution in the bulk of the nanocomposite. Finally, these results are discussed in terms of the distribution of potential barriers that vary according to the concentration of ITO amount in the composite. Neste trabalho as propriedades ópticas do poli[2-metóxi,5-(2’etil-hexiloxi)-p-fenilenovinileno] - MEH-PPV foram estudadas sob efeito de luz azul proveniente de super LEDs utilizada no tratamento da hiperbilirrubinemia neonatal (ou icterícia). Os resultados mostraram que o MEH-PPV apresenta uma mudança de cor do vermelho-alaranjado para o incolor, passando por diversas tonalidades de amarelo, bem como uma diminuição da intensidade dos espectros de absorção e de fotoluminescência (PL) em função do tempo de exposição à radiação. Essas mudanças foram usadas para projetar um sensor de acúmulo de dose de radiação azul, tipo indicador de cores, para avaliar a dose de radiação recebida por recém-nascidos durante o tratamento da icterícia neonatal. In this work we investigated the optical behavior of poly[2-methoxy-5(2’-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) under the effect of blue-light LED source applied in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia treatment. There is a visible response that covers the electronic absorption of bilirubin (350-500 nm), and hence this material is applicable for controlling the radiation doses in the treatment of jaundice of neonates, which is one of the most common reasons for hospital readmission of newborn infants. The results show that the material presents a gradation of color from orange-red to yellow and quenching on the absorption and photoluminescent (PL) spectra with the radiation exposure time. The rate of these changes can be altered by manipulations of organic solution concentration, suggesting these color and emission/absorption changes can be used to design an indicator-dosimeter that is readily associated with the radiation exposure time used in treating neonatal jaundice.

In this paper, a detailed study of the capacitance spectra obtained from Au/doped-polyaniline/Al structures in the frequency domain (0.05 Hz–10 MHz), and at different temperatures (150–340 K) is carried out. The capacitance spectra behavior in semiconductors can be appropriately described by using abrupt cut-off models, since they assume that the electronic gap states that can follow the ac modulation have response times varying rapidly with a certain abscissa, which is dependent on both temperature and frequency. Two models based on the abrupt cut-off concept, formerly developed to describe inorganic semiconductor devices, have been used to analyze the capacitance spectra of devices based on doped polyaniline (PANI), which is a well-known polymeric semiconductor with innumerous potential technological applications. The application of these models allowed the determination of significant parameters, such as Debye length (≈20 nm), position of bulk Fermi level (≈320 meV) and associated density of states (≈2×1018 eV−1 cm−3), width of the space charge region (≈70 nm), built-in potential (≈780 meV), and the gap states’ distribution.

The central process of neonatal phototherapy by employing blue light has been attributed to the configurational conversion of (4Z,15Z)-bilirubin to (4Z,15E). Indeed, photoisomerization is the early photochemical event during this procedure. However, in this paper, we show that the bilirubin solutions under continuous blue light exposure undergo a photooxidation process. To ascertain the role of this photodegradation in the phototherapy, we evaluated UV–visible absorption spectra obtained from bilirubin solutions in CHCl3, milli-Q water, and physiological saline, as well as FTIR spectroscopy for bilirubin in CHCl3. These analyses also showed that the first 2 h of phototherapy are the most relevant period. In addition, quantum molecular modeling using B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) and ZINDO/S-CIS was performed to evaluate the electronic and structural properties of four bilirubin isomers, showing that the (4Z,15E)-bilirubin isomer is the most polar configuration. Therefore, it can be more soluble in aqueous environments than the other configurations. This clarifies why this is the faster isomer excreted during the phototherapy.

Poly( p -phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives are well known for their applications in polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs). PPV derivatives are highly susceptible to photo-oxidation though, which is mainly caused by the scission of the vinyl double bond on the polymer backbone. In this work, we show that Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films are less degraded than cast films of a PPV derivative (OC 1 OC 6 -PPV). Both films had similar thickness (∼50 nm) to allow for a more realistic comparison. Degradation was monitored with UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopies. The results indicated that cast films were completely degraded in ca. 400 min, while LB took longer time, i.e. about four times the values for the cast films. The differences can be attributed to the more compact morphology in the LB than in the cast films. With a compact morphology the diffusion of oxygen in the LB film is hampered and this causes a delay in the degradation process.

We have developed a novel programmable, low cost, spin coater to be used for applications where flat substrates are coated with an uniform thin layer of a desirable material. The equipment is built with dc brushless motor present in most of the hard disk drivers (HDDs). The system offers manual control, wide speed range (from 0 to 10,000 rpm), spin speed stability and compact size. The paper also describes the use of such equipment for the fabrication of thin poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) films, which are of particular interest for design organic electronic devices, such as diodes, transistor, sensors and displays.

Complex conductance,ae ⁄ (f) = ae0(f)+iae"(f), measurements of polyaniline/carnauba wax composites were carried out at room temperature in samples containing different amounts of PAni. While ae"(f) ever grows as a function of the frequency f;ae0(f) was observed to vary as f n (n … 1) in the high frequency domain, and to be frequency-independent for lower frequencies. This is the quasi-universal behavior characteristic of conduction in a disordered medium. Superposed on this, another signal was observed to occur, and the whole impedance response was then analysed in an Argand Diagram, disclosing an electrode process in series with the bulk one. An equivalent conductance expression was used to explain such electrical behavior, in which the bulk properties of the composite were represented through the Random Free Energy Barrier model, while the composite-electrode interface by a simple parallel combination of a capacitor and a resistor. From the theoretical fittings it was concluded that the increase of PAni concentration acts in the sense of increasing not only the sample conductance, but also the bulk capacitance. The separation of the bulk and the interface contributions was then achieved.

A report is made of Langmuir film of a new semi-amphiphilic alternating N-hexylpyrrole-thiophene AB copolymer (PHPT) that is amenable to transfer as Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films. PHPT was synthesized by condensation copolymerization via Stille coupling between N-hexyl-2,5-bis(trimethylstannyl)pyrrole and 2,5-dibromothiophene in the presence of Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 as a catalyst in dry DMF and characterized with various analytical techniques. In contrast to homopolymers (e.g. poly(N-alkylpyrrole)s and poly(3-alkylthiophene)s), PHPT formed a reasonably stable monolayer, as inferred through surface pressure and surface potential isotherms, and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). The dependence of monolayer characteristics on the spreading volume, subphase temperature and compression speeds was also investigated. Electrical characterization revealed the possibility of using PHPT LB films as gas sensors.

This paper presents a methodology for the preparation of a-HgI2 by Physical Vapor Transport and of PbI2 crystals using the Bridgman technique. The results of the growth of HgI2 diluted in PbI2 by the Bridgman technique are shown for the first time, its limit of solubility having been determined at 600 ppm of HgI2 in the PbI2 matrix. Optical absorption, photoluminescence and electrical conductivity measurements show that the crystals prepared are of good crystalline quality.

The control of the photo degradation of a fluorene–vinylene–phenylene based-polymer, poly(9,9-di-hexylfluorenediylvinylene- alt -1,4-phenylenevinylene) (LaPPS16) was achieved by addition of a radical scavenger (RS) (enhancing photo resistance) or a radical initiator (RI) (reducing photo resistance). Photoluminescence, UV–Vis absorption, 1 H NMR spectroscopies and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) revealed that the incorporating small amounts of RS or RI is an efficient way to control the rates of the photo-oxidation reactions, and thus to obtain the conjugated polymer with foreseeable degradation rates for applications in blue-light sensitive detectors for neonatal phototherapy.

In this paper, we report our experimental design in searching a smart and easy-to-read dosimeter used to detect 6MV X-rays for improving patient safety in radiation oncology. The device was based on an organic emissive solutions of poly(2-methoxy-5(2′-ethylhexyloxy)- p -phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV), aluminum-tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq 3 ) and additive components which were characterized by UV–Vis absorption, photoluminescence and CIE color coordinate diagram. The optical properties of MEH-PPV/Alq 3 solutions have been examined as function of radiation dose over the range of 0–100Gy. It has shown that MEH-PPV/Alq 3 solutions are specifically sensitive to X-rays, since the effect of radiation on this organic system is strongly correlated with the efficient spectral overlap between Alq 3 emission and the absorption of degraded MEH-PPV, which alters the color and photoemission of MEH-PPV/Alq 3 mixtures from red to yellow, and then to green. The rate of this change is more sensitive when MEH-PPV/Alq 3 is irradiated in the presence of benzoyl peroxide than when in the presence of hindered phenolic stabilizers, respectively, an accelerator and an inhibitor to activate or inhibit free radical formation. This gives rise to optimize the response curve of the dosimeter. It is clear from the experimental results that organic emissive semiconductors have potential to be used as dedicated and low-cost dosimeters to provide an independent check of beam output of a linear accelerator and therefore to give patients the opportunity to have information on the dose prescription or equipment-related problems a few minutes before being exposed to radiation.

A novel approach for studying the thermal conversion of poly-p-xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) films has been proposed on the basis of calculated optical parameters. Spin-cast PTHT films were thermally converted into partially conjugated PPV films over conversion temperatures ranging from 22 °C to 200 °C. A strong correlation between refractive index (n) and damping constant extinction coefficient (k) was verified by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) for the films studied in the visible range of energy. The conversion temperature has a strong influence on the values of n and k, which were theoretically modeled using a Lorentz harmonic oscillator analysis. The films were also studied by spectroscopic techniques (photoluminescence, FTIR, and UV–VIS), and it was verified that the values of n decrease with increasing the amount of C C groups present along the polymer chains, as a strong evidence that both structure and optical properties of thermally converted PPV films can be directly compared. The optical properties of the PPV films were also compared with those of two electroluminescent derivatives in which side chains are introduced into the phenyl ring of PPV, poly(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene) (MH-PPV) and poly(3-methoxy-5-dodecyloxy-p-phenylene–vinylene) (MD-PPV).

Neste trabalho são apresentadas a fabricação e a caracterização óptica de um novo detector de raios X para monitoramento da dose nos processos de radioterapia empregando fótons de alta energia (6,0 MV). O dispositivo foi fabricado a partir de materiais orgânicos luminescentes consolidados como elemento ativo de displays eletroluminescentes nanoestrurados, mas que, até esse momento, têm sido pouco investigados como detectores de radiação ionizante. Para tanto, foram preparadas soluções à base de tris(8-hidroxiquinolato) de alumínio - Alq3 e poli(2-metóxi-5-(2-etilhexiloxi)-pfenilenovinileno) – MEH-PPV, cujo espectro de emissão do primeiro material se sobrepõe ao de absorção do segundo. Os resultados obtidos mostram que os espectros de emissão do sistema MEH-PPV/Alq3 desloca-se do vermelho-laranja (λmax = 598 nm) para o verde (λmax = 545 nm) quando a dose de radiação vai de 0 a 100 Gy. Essa mudança, consequência da degradação induzida pela radiação do MEH-PPV, foi usada no desenvolvimento de dosímetros para possível futura aplicação no controle do tratamento de pacientes oncológicos. In this work it is presented the characterization and fabrication of a novel ionizing radiation detector for high energy photon beam (6.0 MV). It is used organic luminescent materials usually applied in light-emitting and nanostructure device, but still few explored in radiation dosimetry. Organic solutions of tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum - Alq3 and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2’-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene] - MEH-PPV were prepared to better study the impact of spectral overlap between the Alq3 emission and MEH-PPV absorption. It is observed a blue-shift on the photoluminescence of the MEH-PPV/Alq3 solution system from red-orange (λmax = 598 nm) to green (λmax = 545 nm) when the radiation dose changes from 0 to 100 Gy. This effect is attributed to the photoxidation process of MEH-PPV and was employed to design dose accumulation detector in order to represent easily the radiation dose for cancer treatment.

We report on the investigations about the modification of optical properties induced by X-rays onto film detectors of cadmium tungstate (CdWO4), poly[2-methoxy-5(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) and polystyrene (PS) This device takes advantage of reduction of spectral overlap between the radioluminescence (RL) of CdWO4 and the absorption of MEH-PPV as it is exposed to radiation, forming the basis of a new dosimeter that is capable of converting the orange-red radioluminescence of PS:MEH-PPV:CdWO4 into green. We propose an explanation of the optical processes occurring in MEH-PPV:CdWO4 in terms of the radiation hardness of CdWO4 combined to the RL-induced degradation of MEH-PPV.

A fototerapia com luz azul (460 nm - 490 nm) é o procedimento mais utilizado para o tratamento da icterícia em recém-nascidos. Contudo, dois fatores alteraram drasticamente a eficiência desse tratamento: (1) o espectro da fonte luminosa e (2) a dose de radiação absorvida pelos neonatos. Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de detectores de radiação orgânicos e flexíveis, de baixo custo, de bom desempenho e de fácil operação para monitoramento da radiação incidente em neonatos ictéricos sob tratamento fototerápico. O princípio de funcionamento dos dispositivos baseia-se na resposta óptica de filmes finos à base de dois materiais orgânicos luminescentes: o tris (8-hidroxiquinolinato de alumínio) - Alq3 e o poli[2-metóxi-5-(2’-etilóxi)-p-fenilenovinileno] - MEH-PPV, dispersos em matriz de poliestireno – PS sob efeito de luz azul. Os resultados obtidos mostram que a radiação atua no sentido de alterar a intensidade de máxima emissão do vermelho ao verde, passando pelo amarelo, dos filmes de PS/MEH-PPV/Alq3. Esse resultado é atribuído à fotodegradação do MEH-PPV e, consequentemente, as mudanças na sobreposição entre os espectros de emissão do Alq3 e de absorção desse polímero. A resposta óptica dos filmes com a radiação foi usada para fabricar um sensor orgânico flexível, inédito e de custo inferior a R$ 0,50, para controle das condições de exposição de neonatos ictéricos à fototerapia com luz azul. Blue-light therapy (460 nm - 490 nm) is the most common treatment of jaundice in newborns. However, the efficiency of this treatment is dependent of two factors: (1) the spectrum of light source and (2) the delivered dose to the neonates. This work presents the development of a low-cost, flexible, good performance and an easy detector operation based on organic materials for evaluation of radiation dose delivered by the phototherapy units to jaundice newborns. The operation principles of the device is based on the optical response of poly [2-methoxy-5-(2’-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene - MEH-PPV, tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato aluminum)-Alq3 and polystyrene-PS thin films under the effects of blue-light. Neste trabalho, é apresentado o desenvolvimento de um novo equipamento para fabricação de filmes finos orgânicos, baseado na tecnologia automotiva de injeção eletrônica. Tal sistema apresenta, dentre as vantagens de disponibilidade comercial e baixo custo, baixas taxas de corrosão química e de problemas de entupimento dos bicos injetores, bem como o controle de taxas de temperatura de deposição. Portanto, apresenta versatilidade para utilização de diversas soluções orgânicas usadas em microeletrônica e eletrônica orgânica, tais como Fotoresistes e polímeros semicondutivos, como o poli(etileno-dioxitiofeno) - PEDOT. Ensaios obtidos com esses materiais mostram que o desempenho do sistema proposto depende de parâmetros como frequência da válvula injetora, diâmetro do orifício ejetor, pressão aplicada na solução impressa e das características da superfície dos substratos, que influenciam diretamente na qualidade dos filmes obtidos. This paper presents the development of a new equipment for manufacturing organic thin-films based on the technology of electronic fuel injection. This system presents, among the advantages of commercial availability and low cost, low rates of chemical corrosion and problems of nozzle clogging, as well as a temperature rate control system for material deposition. Thus, the developed equipment presents the versatility of using several organic solutions, such as Photoresistes and semiconducting polymers, for microelectronic and organic electronics, such as polyethylenedioxythiophene - PEDOT. Tests obtained with these materials show that system performance depends of parameters such as frequency of the injector valve, ejector orifice diameter, pressure applied in the printed solution and the substrates surface characteristics that influence directly in the quality of films obtained.

Nesse trabalho filmes ultrafinos de PANI/PVS foram caracterizados óptica, elétrica e morfologicamente para estudo da viabilidade desses sistemas como elemento ativo de sensores de amônia. Os filmes automontados foram depositados entre microeletrodos metálicos formados por uma fina camada de NiCr recoberto com Au. Medidas de absorção na região do UV VIS mostraram o crescimento linear dos filmes, enquanto a análise das imagens de microscopia de força atômica mostrou o aumento da rugosidade, do tamanho de grão e do tamanho da partícula com a espessura dos filmes. A caracterização elétrica dc evidenciou uma significativa mudança na resistência elétrica do sistema quando a espessura do filme tornou-se equivalente à espessura do eletrodo de NiCr. Esse efeito foi atribuído à alta resistência elétrica da interface NiCr-filme. A impedância complexa obtida foi típica de materiais sólidos desordenados, com influência da interface NiCr-filme em baixas frequências. Por fim, os filmes mostraram ainda aumento de resistência elétrica em cerca de três vezes quando expostos às condições ambientais de galpões de criação avícola ([NH3] < 50 ppm), bem como em outras aplicações agropecuárias onde a necessidade do monitoramento desse gás é de grande importância. Esses resultados demonstram o potencial que filmes de PANI/PVS apresentam para aplicações agropecuárias. In this work we investigated the optical, electrical and morphological properties of ultrathin PANI/PVS films as active material of ammonia sensor for a poultry house. The layer-by-layer polymer films were deposited onto NiCr interdigitated microelectrode recovered with Au (NiCr/Au) line arrays. The buildup of the multilayers was monitored at each deposition step by UV-VIS spectroscopy while the atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to monitor the change in the roughness, in the grain and particle sizes. We observed a significant change in the dc conductivity when the thickness of the films was close to that of the NiCr layer. This effect is attributed to the higher interfacial electrical resistance between NiCr and the polymer film, compared to the resistance of the Au-film interface and polymer bulk. The alternating conductivity of the polymer was typical of solid disordered materials, under the influence of the NiCr electrode at low frequencies. Finally, the electrical sensitivity of the system under the exposure of NH3 reveals PANI/PVS films as a feasible active element for use in poultry house control systems.

Luminescent polymers are commonly employed in light-emitting displays because of their good processability and higher luminance with low power consumption. However, even though they are candidates for lighting applications, they are susceptible to photoxidation processes which dramatically change their colour with light exposure. In this work we use the light instability of luminescent polymers in order to design a blue-light dosimeter which indicates dose accumulation by multicoloured changes of photodegraded poly(2-methoxy-5(2′-ethylhexyloxy)- p -phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV). Photoluminescence and absorbance spectra measurements were carried out on MEH-PPV solutions under the effect of blue-light provided by phototherapy systems. All measurements were done maintaining chief conditions of jaundice treatments. It is observed that changes from orange-red to yellow clearly on colour solutions, while its peak position emission shifts from orange-red to blue and decreases in intensity with increasing radiation exposure time. Experiments performed with oxygen enriched solutions were shown to improve these effects, which is mainly caused by the competition between two possible mechanisms: a light induced polymerization of MEH-PPV and replacement of C C by C O bonds on the polymer backbone. Analyses of the relation between the irradiance produced by phototherapy systems and CIE (1931) chromatic diagram of MEH-PPV reveal this polymer as an easy to operate blue-light dosimeter, and the results reported here clearly demonstrated the possibility to produce self-adhesive patch of luminescent polymers in order to attach such organic dosimeter safety and placed closer to the skin of jaundiced infants.

In this work we investigated the effect of visible radiation on the electrical properties of poly[(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene]- MH-PPV films and light emitting diodes. Complex impedance measurements of (Au or ITO)/MH-PPV/(Au or Al) samples were carried out at room temperature and exposed to white light. Over the frequency range from 100 mHz to 2 MHz, the electrical results of Au/MH-PPV/Au was dominated by the Cole-Cole approach, where the electrode influence is negligible. However, some additional influence of the interface was observed to occur when Al was used as electrode. These effects were observed under both dark and visible-light illumination conditions. A simple model based on resistor-capacitor parallel circuits was developed to represent the complex impedance of the samples, thereby separating bulk and interface contributions. We observed that the polymer electrical resistivity decreased while the dielectric constant of the polymer and the thickness of the Al/MH-PPV layer were almost constant with increasing light intensity. The decrease of the polymer layer resistance comes from a better charge injection due to a light induced dissociation of positive charge carriers at the electrode.

Tais dispositivos apresentam grande interesse tecnológico devido aos seus baixos custos de produção e à possibilidade de integração com outros sistemas orgânicos e inorgânicos, incluindo transistores, diodos e baterias. Filmes finos de PAni foram preparados pelo método de polimerização in-situ sobre microeletrodos de Cr/Au previamente depositados sobre substratos de polietilenoteraftalato (PET). As características elétricas do sistema foram investigadas como função do nível de dopagem da PAni. Os dispositivos apresentaram boa resposta elétrica para diferentes soluções ácidas e básicas, bem como para pequenas variações de deformações mecânicas. In this work we describe the design and operation of thin polyaniline (PAni) films as active material for strain gauge and pH-monitoring flexible electronic devices. These devices are interesting due to their low cost and possible integration with other organic or inorganic systems, including diodes, transistors and batteries. Thin PAni films were prepared using the in-situ polymerization method on interdigitated chromium-gold microelectrodes previously deposited on poly(ethylene terephthalate) - PET substrates. The electrical characteristics of the polymer devices were obtained as a function of the PAni doping level. The devices showed high sensitivity for small strains and acid/base solutions. The alternating conductivity, σ *( f ) = σ ′( f ) + iσ ″( f ), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency ( f ) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for σ ′( f ) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency γ hop , log[ σ ′( f )] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in log f > γ hop . A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales σ ′( f )/ σ dc and f / γ hop , which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level.

Neste trabalho foram observadas mudanças nas propriedades de emissão e de absorção de soluções de poli[2-metoxi-5-(2’etil-hexiloxi)-p-fenilenovinileno] – MEH-PPV com a exposição à radiação na região espectral do visível na faixa de 425 a 500 nm. Os resultados demonstram a possibilidade do uso de sistemas luminescentes como elemento ativo de detectores de radiação não ionizante, sobretudo na região empregada na profilaxia e no tratamento fototerápico da hiperbilirrubinemia neonatal. In this work, we observed changes in the emission and absorption properties of poly[(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-pphenylenevinylene] - MEH-PPV solutions in the visible range from 425 to 500 nm. The main results demonstrated the possibility of using luminescent polymers as active material of non-ionizing radiation dosimeter, in such a way that MEH-PPV is promising for use in a management system to monitor radiation absorbed by newborns during phototherapy treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

Complex impedance measurements were used to analyze the influence of ultraviolet and ozone gas on the electronic behaviour of ZnO films grown by rf magnetron sputtering. The data show that UV exposure strongly increases the ac conductivity of the film at very low frequencies, and that after ozone exposure it recovers the original value. At high frequencies, however, UV-light exposure it does not change the conductivity but the ozone acts in the sense to decrease it. Two distinct mechanisms, related to two relaxation time distributions are clearly observed: they are superimposed in the virgin sample, but they split forming two semicircles in the z ″( f ) − z ′( f ) diagrams when the samples are treated with UV and/or ozone gas. A combination of the bruggeman effective medium approximation (BEMA) with the random free energy barrier model is used to fit the data and to explain the ac conductivity variation phenomena observed.

Photogenerated charge carrier profiles in poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) light-emitting diodes were determined from steady-state photocurrent spectra and transient photocurrent decay measurements. The observation that the photocurrent spectra behavior is strongly dependent on the bias polarity and amplitude suggests the existence of an intrinsic electric field, determined by the difference in the work function of the metallic electrodes, as well as a field dependence on the free charge carrier generation rates. The obtained results reveal built-in voltages of +0.2 and −0.6 V for Au and Al electrodes, respectively. The photocurrent spectra can be semi-quantitatively explained using a simple model which takes into account the internal built-in electric field of the device structure, the band gap energy and the migration/diffusion of the photogenerated charge carriers through the polymeric film. The drift mobility of carriers was investigated by the time-of-flight technique (TOF). The value for the mobility of holes was obtained from the change of slopes in the double logarithmic plot of the transient current and was independent of the applied field. The TOF transients for electrons showed no change of slopes in the double logarithmic plot and the drift mobility of electrons could not be calculated.

Hybrid organic−inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes (organically modified electrolytes), were obtained by dissolution of LiClO4 in siloxane−poly(propylene glycol) matrixes. The dynamic features of these nanocomposites were studied and correlated to their electrical properties. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to probe the effects of the temperature and nanocomposite composition on the dynamic behaviors of both the ionic species (7Li) and the polymer chains (13C). NMR, dc ionic conductivity, and DSC results demonstrate that the Li+ mobility is strongly assisted by the segmental motion of the polymer chain above its glass transition temperature. The ac ionic conductivity in such composites is explained by use of the random free energy barrier (RFEB) model, which is in agreement with their disordered and heterogeneous structures. Nesse trabalho apresentamos medidas de condutividade ac, real e imaginária, em: polianilinas, Ormolytes (mistura orgânica-inorgânica) e perovskitas do tipo SrTi1-xRuxO3. As medidas foram realizadas em amostras com diferentes concentrações de impurezas e temperaturas e, apesar dos materiais possuírem características distintas, as medidas de condutividade ac obtidas mostraram-se típicas das observadas em sistemas sólidos desordenados, ou seja, apresentaram um patamar na curva de condutividade real na região de baixas freqüências e a partir de uma freqüência crítica, &#982c, iniciam um aumento com &#982, obedecendo aproximadamente a relação &#963(&#982) &#8733 &#982s. Para interpretá-las, foi utilizado o modelo de distribuição aleatória de barreiras de energia livre (RANDOM FREE ENERGY BARRIER MODEL-RFEB) aplicado como ajuste teórico-experimental. Para os Ormolytes, em particular, também foram realizadas medidas de análise térmica (DSC) e ressonância magnética nuclear (7Li) e os resultados obtidos, correlacionados às medidas de condutividade dc, mostraram uma forte evidência de uma mudança estrutural do material próxima à temperatura de 280 K. CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico FAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior INCT – Instituto nacional de ciência e tecnologia (Antigo Instituto do Milênio) Este trabalho reporta a preparação de materiais híbridos baseados na intercalação de subunidades elétron-aceptoras (A) e elétron-doadoras (D) além de suas caracterizações, com foco no eletrocromismo. Inicialmente, procedeu-se a oxidação dos nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas (MWCNT’s) e a preparação de duas aminas aromáticas (D): 3-amino-9-metilcarbazol (CbzNH2) e 3-amino-9-metil-6-nitrocarbazol (NH2CbzNO2). Em seguida, estas aminas foram ligadas aos MWCNT-ox (A), obtendo-se os precursores binários do tipo A-D: MWCNTCO-NHCbz (1) e MWCNTCO-NHCbzNO2 (2). Ao precursor 1, aplicou-se metodologia de polimerização química de 3-dodeciltiofeno, sem direta formação de ligações, formando-se o primeiro material (HIB-1). O precursor 2 foi submetido à reação de redução, obtendo-se o intermediário MWCNTCO-NHCbzNH2, o qual reagiu com ácido 3-tiofeno carboxílico (TfCOOH, A), gerando o híbrido ternário MWCNTCO-NHCbzNH-COTf (HIB-2 – A-D-A). Em seguida, poli(3-dodeciltiofeno) e poli(3-hexiltiofeno) (D) foram ligados a este precursor ternário (HIB-2), através da técnica grafting, para formar dois híbridos quaternários do tipo A-D-A-D: HIB-3 e HIB-4, respectivamente. As caracterizações espectroscópicas corroboraram o sucesso nas ligações covalentes entre as subunidades e a obtenção dos híbridos moleculares esperados. A partir da análise termogravimétrica, foi possível determinar a porcentagem mássica de MWCNT presente em cada material, sendo ~45% para HIB-1 e HIB-3 e ~8% para o HIB-4. Nitidamente, observou-se a influência dos MWCNT’s sobre as propriedades ópticas, elétricas e eletroquímicas dos híbridos, que dependem diretamente da porcentagem de MWCNT presente. A partir da caracterização espectroeletroquímica, observou-se que estes híbridos apresentaram eletrocromismo e performance superiores aos respectivos homopolímeros, com destaque para o HIB-3, que apresentou maiores valores de contraste óptico e eficiência eletrocrômica, rápidos tempos de resposta e ciclabilidade eletrocrômica. Deste modo, este material foi escolhido para construção de um protótipo de dispositivo, que apresentou eletrocromismo, indo do vermelho-alaranjado a um estado transmissivo, mesmo após 100 ciclos de operação. Em linhas gerais, o desempenho superior nas propriedades observadas para estes materiais híbridos, como os menores valores de bandgap, tem relação direta com a arquitetura molecular: intercalação de subunidades elétron-doadoras e elétron-aceptoras, unidas covalentemente. This work reports the preparation of hybrid materials based on the intercalation between electron-acceptor (A) and electron-donor (D) subunits, beyond their characterization, especially the electrochromism. Firstly, the oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-ox, A) were obtained by acid treatment of MWCNT and two aromatic amines (D) were synthesized: 3-amino-9-methylcarbazole (CbzNH2) and 3-amino-9-methyl-6-nitrocarbazole (NH2CbzNO2). Then, these amines were attached to the MWCNT-ox, yielding the A-D-like binary hybrids: MWCNTCO-NHCbz (1) and MWCNTCO-NHCbzNO2 (2). The precursor (1) was submitted to a chemical polymerization of 3-dodecylthiophene, yielding the first hybrid material (HIB-1). The precursor 2 was submitted to a reduction process in order to obtain the MWCNTCO-NHCbzNH2 precursor, in which was treated with 3-thiophenecarboxylic acid (ThCOOH, A), yielding the A-D-A ternary hybrid: MWCNTCO-NHCbzNH-COTh (HIB-2). Moving forward, poly(3-dodecylthiophene) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) were attached to this ternary precursor through the grafting technique, yielding two A-D-A-D-like quaternary hybrid materials: HIB-3 and HIB-4, respectively. After each functionalization step, the products were analyzed by spectroscopic techniques that corroborate the covalent bonds formation between the subunits and therefore, the formation of the expected hybrid materials. Through the thermogravimetric analysis of the hybrids, it was possible to estimate the MWCNT amount in each material, being ~45 wt% for both HIB-1 and HIB-3 and ~8 wt% for HIB-4. Clearly, it was observed the influence from the MWCNT over the optical, electrical and electrochemical properties of the hybrids – directly related to the MWCNT amount. Through the spectroelectrochemical characterization, these hybrids showed greater electrochromic performance compared to the homopolymers, particularly the HIB-3, that showed higher values of optical contrast and coloration efficiency, fast switching times and electrochromic cyclability. Therefore, this hybrid was chosen to build an electrochromic device that showed a reversible color changing process, switching from reddish orange to transmissive, even after 100 cycles. Generally, the enhancement of the properties observed for these hybrids, e.g. their lower bandgap energy, is directly related to their molecular architecture: A and D subunits covalently bonded.

Neste trabalho investigamos como leitores realizam a leitura de um texto multimodal, retirado de um livro didático de Física destinado ao Ensino Superior. Mais precisamente, procuramos avaliar os caminhos de leitura trilhados pelos leitores em interação com esse texto. O livro didático de Física é um importante objeto mediador utilizado por professores e alunos, dentro e fora da sala de aula. Pelo fato de suas páginas serem compostas por diferentes modos semióticos de comunicação, como fotografias, desenhos, esquemas, gráficos, equações e textos verbais, sua leitura demanda a integração das informações advindas desses diferentes modos. Seria sensato admitir que, para um leitor em processo de enculturação nas práticas da ciência escolar, uma forma de educar a atenção desse leitor para a leitura coordenada desses modos, isto é, uma orientação para ajuda-lo a integrar as informações comunicadas pelos diferentes modos deveria ser fornecida pelo texto. Em certa medida isso parece ser feito, com as indicações que o remetem a uma figura, ou aos detalhes de uma equação. No entanto, ele pode escolher seguir ou não tais orientações. Neste trabalho nos ocupamos em acompanhar leitores em interação com um texto multimodal de Física. Reproduzimos um texto de um livro didático na tela de um computador com um sistema de eye-tracking. O eye-tracking permite o rastreamento ocular do leitor durante a leitura do texto na tela e possibilita a reconstrução de todo o caminho de leitura trilhado por ele na interação com o texto. Os dados fornecidos pelo rastreamento ocular indicam que os caminhos de leitura são muito variados. Alguns leitores promovem uma forte integração dos diferentes modos de comunicação que compõem uma página, ao passo que outros ignoram até mesmo as indicações de integração presentes no texto. Outro ponto interessante que observamos foi a predominância do modo escrita no direcionamento da leitura de boa parte dos participantes. Ao acompanharmos os leitores na resolução de questões, vimos que a não integração dos modos implica em dificuldades na resolução e que o tipo de modo, se mais icônico ou mais esquemático, interfere na atenção dada ao modo. As formas de interação dos leitores com os textos, que observamos nesse trabalho, podem oferecer oportunidades de reflexão para professores, formadores de professores e produtores de materiais didáticos que lidam com textos didáticos multimodais de Física. In this work we investigate how people read a multimodal text, taken from a university level Physics textbook. More precisely, we seek to evaluate the reading paths followed by readers in interaction with this text. The Physics textbook is an important resource used by teachers and students, in and out of the classroom. Reading this texts demands to integrate different modes information because its pages are composed by different semiotic modes of communication, such as photographs, drawings, diagrams, graphs, equations and verbal texts. For a reader in enculturation process in the practices of school science it should be provided a way of educating your attention to coordinate reading of these modes. For this reader it should be provided an orientation to help his or her to integrate the information communicated by different modes in the text. To some extent this seems to be done with the indications that refer to a figure, or a details of an equation. However they can choose to follow these guidelines or not. In this investigation we accompanying readers in interaction with a multimodal Physics text. We reproduce a text from a Physics textbook on a computer screen with an eye-tracking system. Eye-tracking system permits to monitorate the reader gaze on the screen. With this system it is possible to rebuild the entire reading path followed by readers in the interaction with the text. The results provided by eye-tracking indicates that the reading paths are very varied. Some readers promote a strong integration of the different modes of communication on the page while others ignore even the integration indications present in the text. Another interesting point that we observed was the predominance of verbal text mode in reading targeting of most of participants. As we accompanied readers in resolving questions, we saw that the non-integration of modes implies difficulties in solving them and that the type of mode, whether more iconic or more schematic, interferes with the attention given to the mode. The schematic modes are considered be more important. Our results about the ways in which readers interact with the texts can offer opportunities for reflection for teachers, teacher trainers and producers of teaching materials that deal with multimodal didactic texts in Physics. It is needed to reflect about the use and the characteristics of the multiple modes commoly used in the teaching Physics.

Entre as doenças negligenciadas estão as transmitidas pelo vírus pertencentes à família Flaviviridae, do gênero Flavivírus, causador da Dengue. Este é responsável pela produção de 10 proteínas, dentre elas a proteína não estrutural 1 (NS1), a única secretada e encontrada nos estágios iniciais da doença em fluidos biológicos, o que a transformou em um interessante biomarcador. Neste trabalho será abordado o desenvolvimento de um biossensor para detecção de NS1 utilizando,para isto, aptâmeros de DNA como elementos de reconhecimento biológico. Os aptâmeros são cadeias de DNA artifciais, quimicamente estáveis,com grande flexibilidade e com habilidade de \"folding\" ,para interagirem com alvos específcos. Para tanto, eletrodos de ouro foram funcionalizados por meio da co-imobilização de aptâmeros e 6-mercapto-1-hexanol(MCH), para análises impedânciométricas e aptâmeros com 6-ferrocenyl-hexanethiol(FCC),para as capacitivas, formando em ambos casos uma monocamada auto-organizada(SAM).A caracterização e detecção foram realizadas por meio das técnicas de espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIE) e da espectroscopia de capacitância eletroquímica(ECE), bem como de análises morfológicas via microscopia de força atômica(AFM). A plataforma sensível foi otimizada em função da densidade de recobrimento dos aptâmeros, assim como as soluções utilizadas. O limite de detecção foi obtido a partir da curva analítica para diferentes soluções contendo NS1 pelas técnicas: EIE, 1,29 e 1,22 pg/mL, e ECE,121,8 e 6,24 pg/mL, em tampão e soro humano comercial sem diluição, respectivamente. Estas medidas apresentaram uma boa sensibilidade para ambas técnicas de: EIE, 2,9 e 2,7% por década,e ECE, 3 e 4 nF por década,em tampão e soro comercial,respectivamente; bem como um alto grau de seletividade da NS1 em comparação com outras biomoléculas da Dengue como a Proteína do envelope E. Com isso ,o aptassensor é capaz de detectar NS1 na faixa clínica e apresenta potencial para o desenvolvimento de uma nova classe de dispositivos miniaturizados point-in-care. Among neglected diseases there is the one transmitted by Flaviviridae virus family, at gender Flavivírus, responsible for Dengue disease.This virus is responsible for 10 proteins production, including the non-structural 1 (NS1),only secreted in the early stages of the disease on biological fluids,what makes it an interesting biomarker. In this work be report the develop of a biosensor for NS1 detection, using DNA aptamers as biological recognition element. Aptamers are anartifcial DNA sequence, chemically stable,with high flexibility and ability to folding for connection with specific target. Gold electrodes were functionalized by co-immobilization of aptamers and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol(MCH) for impedimetric analysis and aptamers with 6-ferrocenyl-hexanethiol(FCC)for the capacitive, making a self -assembly monolayer(SAM) in both cases. The characterization and detection were performed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy(ECS),and atomic force microscopy(AFM).The platform was optimized as a function of the coating density of the aptamers and the solutions. The limit of detection was derived from the analytical curve for different NS1 solutions by: EIS, 1.29 and 1.22 pg/mL,and ECS, 121.8 and 6.24 pg/mL,in buffer and undiluted commercial human serum, respectively. These measurements presented a good sensibility for the both techniques: EIS, 2.9 and 2.7 %per decade, and ECS, 3 and 4 nF per decade, in buffer and commercial serum, respectively.The aptasensor shows a high level of selectivity to detect NS1 in comparison with other Dengue biomolecules, such as envelop protein E. Furthermore, the aptasensor was capable to detect NS1 in clinical range and it is a promising candidate to develop a new class for miniaturized point-of-care devices.

Organic bioelectronics is a fast-rising research field that takes advantage of the soft and conducting/semiconducting nature of conjugated polymers to create devices that communicate, interface and mimic biological systems. Bioelectronics encompasses many applications, including tissue engineering, neural interfaces and biosensors. A device that has been extensively explored for such applications is the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT). The main reason is due to its amplification nature and, thus, high fidelity transducer of biological events. Additionally, OECTs convert ionic signals to electronic ones, providing a direct link between biological ion fluxes and electronics. Even though they have been widely explored in the past 10 years, a major drawback that remains unsolved is the lack of hydrophilic polymers that are suitable for applications in biological environment. Hence, in the first part of this dissertation, we propose a novel and universal OECT architecture that enables the use of virtually any type of conjugated polymer. Using the proposed method, which was based on physical chemistry principles, we successfully fabricated transistors that exhibits very high transconductance, good stability and reproducibility, using traditional water-insoluble conjugated polymers. In the second part, we developed a biosensing application using the proposed architecture. In short, the OECT device was functionalized with a cellular membrane model, making it possible to gather quantitative data on the physical and chemical properties of the membrane. This is particularly useful for understanding how different compounds interact with cells. Additionally, we were able to study the working mechanism of lidocaine, a widely used local anesthetic. The concept presented here was then successfully extended to the fabrication of biosensors, enabling thousands of water-insoluble materials that have been developed over the last several decades to be used in organic bioelectronics devices. A bioeletrônica orgânica é um campo de pesquisa que cresce rapidamente. Se beneficiando da natureza condutora/semicondutora e flexível dos polímeros conjugados, seu principal objetivo é o desenvolvimento de dispositivos eletrônicos capazes de interfacear, mimetizar e se comunicar com sistemas biológicos. A bioeletrônica envolve diversos tipos de aplicações, dentre eles engenharia de tecidos, interfaces neurais e biossensores. Um dispositivo que tem sido extensivamente explorado para esses tipos de aplicações é o transistor eletroquímico orgânico (OECT). OECTs convertem correntes ionicas para eletrônicas, atuando como uma conexão direta entre fluxos iônicos, tipícos de eventos biológicos, e a eletrônica. Apesar de terem sido amplamente explorados na última década, uma de suas desvantagens que permanece sem solução é a falta de polímeros adequados para os ambientes biológicos, que devem ser hidrofílicos. Por isso, na primeira parte dessa dissertação, nós propomos uma nova arquitetura universal de OECT, que permite o uso de virtualmente qualquer tipo de polímero conjugado. Utilizando o método proposto, baseado em princípios físico-químicos, fabricamos transistores com polímeros conjugados inssoluveis em água que exibem alta trancondutancia, boa estabilidade e reproducibilidade. Em seguida, desenvolvemos uma aplicação em biossensores utilizando a arquitetura proposta. Em resumo, o OECT foi funcionalizado com um modelo de membrane celular, possibilitando a aquisição de informações quantitativas sobre propriedades físico-químicas da membrana. Isso é particularmente útil para o estudo de como diferentes compostos interagem com células. Além disso, utilizamos a plataforma para estudar o mecanismo de funcionamento da lidocaina, um anestésico local aplamente utilizado. Assim, o conceito aqui apresentado foi estendido para a fabicação de biossensores, permitindo que milhares de materiais insoluveis em água possam ser utilizados na bioeletrônica orgânica.

Neste trabalho estudamos a dinâmica molecular e o empacotamento em semicondutores orgânicos com diferentes tamanhos de cadeias conjugada usando uma estratégia de multi-técnicas, em particular Ressonância Magnética Nuclear (RMN), espalhamento de Raios-X de alto ângulo (WAXS), Calorimetria Exploratória Diferencial (DSC), espectroscopia Raman e espectroscopias Ópticas de absorção UV-Vis e fluorescência. Nestes estudos utilizamos oligômeros de fluorenos, com 3, 5 e 7 unidades repetitivas e copolímeros multibloco conjugados/não-conjugados com as unidades conjugadas constituídas por unidades de fenileno de vinileno (PV) e as não-conjugadas formadas por unidades metilênicas. No estudo com oligômeros, foi mostrado que a capacidade e a forma de ordenamento das cadeias dependem do número de unidades repetitivas, com o Pentâmero possuindo uma tendência muito maior de cristalização. Essa conclusão foi suportada por cálculos teóricos ab-initio, que mostraram que a conformação de menor energia do pentâmero favorece as interações intercadeias e, portanto, o ordenamento de longo alcance. Os resultados referentes aos estudos de dinâmica molecular corroboraram essas características e mostraram que a ativação dos movimentos moleculares nas fases amorfas dos oligômeros são predominantemente dependentes dos comprimentos das cadeias oligoméricas, em concordância com o comportamento encontrado para as suas Tg´s. No estudo referente aos copolímeros multiblocos, foi encontrado que a presença dos grupos espaçadores alifáticos inibem a forte tendência de cristalização das unidades de PV, porém não impedem a agregação dessas unidades. Foi verificado que, a dispersão de tamanhos das unidades agregadas afeta fortemente as características de emissão dos copolímeros, onde a emissão nas cadeias maiores é privilegiada. No que diz respeito a dinâmica molecular, foi observado que a presença de movimentos na região alifática contribui para o aparecimento de processos de relaxação não radiativos o qual inibem a emissão dos copolímeros e provocam alargamento das bandas vibrônicas. Por fim, foi observado que movimentos isotrópicos das cadeias de PV são responsáveis pela transição vítrea dos copolímeros, sendo que as energias necessárias para ativar esses movimentos aumentam com o tamanho da cadeia. Portanto, de forma geral, nossos resultados indicam que mesmo em sistemas com comprimento de cadeias muito bem controlados, as fortes interações intermoleculares presentes em polímeros conjugados, podem tornar a morfologia em estado sólido desses sistemas bastante complexa, sendo que muitas das propriedades ópticas (e provavelmente também elétricas) são afetadas pela forma de empacotamento, desordem conformacional e térmica, além da própria constituição das cadeias. In this dissertation we present a study of the molecular dynamics and packing in organics semiconductor with different conjugated chains lengths using a of multi-techniques approach, in particular, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The studies were carried-in fluorene oligomers with 3, 5 and 7 repeat units and multi-block conjugated/non-conjugated copolymers with the conjugated part formed by phenylene-vinylene units (PV) and the non-conjugated block formed by methylene units. Concerning the oligomers studies, it was shown that the ability of the chain to form ordered domains as well as the domain structure depend on the number of repeat units, with the pentamer having a higher tendency to crystallization. This conclusion was supported by theoretical ab-initio calculations, which showed that the pentamer conformation favors inter-chain interactions and therefore long-range ordering. The molecular dynamics studies support these characteristics and showed that the activation of molecular motions in oligomers amorphous phase are predominantly dependent on the oligomeric chain lengths, in agreement with the behavior observed for their glass transitions (Tg´s). In the study concerning the multi-block copolymers, it was found that presence of the aliphatic chains inhibit the strong tendency to crystallization of the PV units, but do not prevent their aggregation. It was found that the dispersion in aggregated units sizes strongly affects the copolymers emission, with the emission of larger chains being privileged. Regarding the molecular dynamics, we observed that the presence of motion on aliphatic region contributes to the appearance of non-radiative relaxation processes that inhibit the emission of the copolymers and produce broadening of the vibronic bands. Finally, we observed that isotropic motions of the PV chains are responsible for the copolymers glass transition and the energy required to activate these movements increase with length of the chain. In summary, our results indicate that even in systems with well controlled chains length, the strong intermolecular interactions present in conjugated polymers, can make the solid state morphology of these systems quite complex, which may affect many optical (and probably electric) properties are affected by the packaging structure, thermal and conformational disorder, in addition to the constitution of the chains composition.

Polímeros conjugados têm sido tema de várias pesquisas devido à sua potencial idade de aplicação em dispositivos optoeletrônicos. Esses materiais apresentam propriedades luminescentes que envolvem processos fotofísicos ainda pouco compreendidos devido à grande variedade morfológica assumida por suas cadeias poliméricas. Neste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados que evidenciam a influência da morfologia molecular (ordenamento e empacotamento) no estado final da polarização da luz emitida (luminescência) pelos filmes de poli(p-fenileno vinileno) (PPV). Foram preparados filmes de PPV com diferentes ordenamentos moleculares, obtidos a partir dos seguintes métodos e técnicas de montagem de filmes: Casting, Spin-Coating (SC), Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) e Self-Assembly (S.A). As propriedades ópticas dos filmes foram investigadas através das medidas de absorção (UV-VIS) polarizada, de fotoluminescência (PL) em diferentes temperaturas (10 K a 300 K) e da análise da polarização da luz emitida. As medidas ópticas de absorção e de emissão de luz polarizada revelaram que os filmes obtidos por Langmuir-Blodgett, Casting e SelfAssembly com estiramento mostraram-se anisotrópicos, emitindo luz com polarização na direção do estiramento ou de imersão (quando preparados por LB), independente da direção de polarização da luz de excitação. Os filmes obtidos por Casting e SpinCoating, por outro lado, mostraram-se isotrópicos, emitindo luz com polarização na direção da polarização da luz de excitação. Os resultados obtidos da medida da polarização da luz emitida evidenciaram a ocorrência de transferência de energia entre moléculas. Deste modo, utilizou-se a teoria de Forster (radiação dipolo-dipolo) para explicar os resultados obtidos para os diferentes filmes de PPV, permitindo correlacioná-la com as propriedades ópticas e com o ordenamento molecular dos filmes Since the first report of polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs), there have been considerable efforts to understand the emission process in luminescent polymers. However, many aspects related to this process are still under investigation, as the influence of morphology assumed by the polymeric chains. In this work we studied the influence of the molecular morphology, as ordering and packing, on the polarized light emitting of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) - PPV films. It was obtained films with different molecular arrangements from different assembly techniques, as Casting, Spin-Coating (SC), Langmuir-Blodgett (LB), and Self-Assembly (S.A). The optical property was investigated by absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS), photoluminescence spectra (PL), and polarized light-emitting. The optical measurements disclosed that LB-PPV films, Casting-PPV and S.A-PPV stretched films were optically anisotropic, where the direction of the light-emitting is the same of the stretched direction or dipping preparation. In the other hand, Casting-PPV and Spin-Coating did not have such behavior, i.e., the emitted polarized light propagated in the same direction of the polarization of the excitation light. These data acquired from the optical measurements indicate a relation between morphology and photophysical process involving energy transfer via Forster

Dispositivos baseados em eletrônica orgânica já estão presentes há vários anos no mercado com displays de OLEDs com alta definição de cores e contraste. Atualmente, essas telas são fabricadas com o uso de pequenas moléculas orgânicas depositadas por técnicas de evaporação a vácuo. A possibilidade de deposição dos materiais poliméricos em solução traz vantagens de fabricação com relação a custos e a velocidade de processamento, além de maiores escalas dimensionais. No entanto, diversos entraves técnicos ainda precisam ser superados para garantir desempenho e estabilidade de dispositivos eletrônicos e optoeletrônicos orgânicos. Neste sentido, este trabalho apresenta um equipamento de deposição roll-to-roll de proporções laboratoriais, com o intuito de servir de ponte entre o desenvolvimento acadêmico e as técnicas de produção industriais. Uma primeira versão do equipamento, já apresentado no trabalho de mestrado, foi agora modificado e atualizado com novas funcionalidades. Ele tornou-se mais completo e de operacionalidade mais eficiente, e foi utilizado para a deposição de várias camadas de dispositivos, incluindo a fabricação de eletrodos semitransparentes e da camada ativa de dispositivos luminescentes. Para solucionar as limitações do óxido de estanho e índio (principal condutor semitransparente atualmente) sobre substratos flexíveis, foi validado um eletrodo alternativo, através da síntese e aplicação de nanofios de prata e do polímero condutor PEDOT:PSS por diferentes técnicas de deposição. Também foi investigada a camada ativa de células eletroquímicas emissoras de luz (LEC), depositadas pela técnica slot-die, variando-se o polímero luminescente, de emissão azul, e o solvente utilizado. Por fim, foram fabricados dispositivos luminescentes do tipo LEC com diferentes arquiteturas e sobre diferentes substratos. O dispositivo final apresentado foi fabricado com eletrodos otimizados, depositados por spray com nanofios de prata e PEDOT:PSS, sendo os dois eletrodos semitransparentes. Com isso, obteve emissão em ambas as polaridades e em ambas as direções. Devices based on organic electronics have been present for some years on the market with OLED displays with high color definition and contrast. Currently, these screens are manufactured using organic small molecules deposited by vacuum evaporation techniques. The possibility of deposition of polymeric materials in solution brings manufacturing advantages in terms of costs and processing speed, as well as larger dimensional scales. However, several technical barriers still need to be overcome to ensure performance and stability of organic electronic and optoelectronics devices. In this sense, this work presents roll-to-roll deposition equipment of laboratory proportions, in order to serve as a bridge between academic development and industrial production techniques. A first version of the equipment, already presented in the master\'s work, has now been modified and updated with new functionalities. It has become more complete and more operationally efficient, and has been used for the deposition of several layers of devices, including the manufacture of semitransparent electrodes and the active layer of luminescent devices. To solve the limitations of indium tin oxide (the main semitransparent conductor today) on flexible substrates, an alternative electrode was validated through the synthesis and application of silver nanowires and the PEDOT:PSS conductive polymer by different deposition techniques. It was also investigated the active layer of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEC), deposited by the slot-die technique, varying the blue-emitting luminescent polymer and the solvent used. Finally, luminescent LEC devices were manufactured with different architectures and on different substrates. The final device presented was manufactured with optimized electrodes, deposited by spray with silver nanowires and PEDOT:PSS, the two electrodes being semi-transparent. With this, it obtained emission in both polarities and in both directions.

O estudo da microestrutura e dinâmica molecular de polímeros conjugados é de grande importância para o entendimento das propriedades físicas desta classe de materiais. No presente trabalho utilizou-se técnicas de ressonância magnética nuclear em baixo e alto campo para elucidar os processos de dinâmica molecular e cristalização do polímero Poly(3-(2’-ethylhexyl)thiophene) - P3EHT. O P3EHT é um polímero modelo para tal estudo, pois apresenta temperatura de fusão bem inferior a sua temperatura de degradação. Esta característica permite acompanhar os processos de cristalização in situ utilizando RMN. Além disso, sua similaridade ao já popular P3HT o torna um importante candidato a camada ativa em dispositivos eletrônicos orgânicos. O completo assinalamento do espectro de 13C para o P3EHT foi realizado utilizando as técnicas de defasamento dipolar e HETCOR. Os processos de dinâmica molecular, por sua vez, foram sondados utilizando DIPSHIFT. Observou-se um gradiente de mobilidade na cadeia lateral do polímero. Além disso, os baixos valores de parametros de ordem obtidos em comparação a experimentos similares realizados no P3HT na literatura indicam um aparente aumento no volume livre entre cadeias consecutivas na fase cristalina. Isso indica que a presença do grupo etil adicional no P3EHT causa um completo rearranjo das moléculas e dificulta seu empacotamento. Constatou-se ainda pouca variação das curvas de DIPSHIFT para os carbonos da cadeia lateral como função do método de excitação utilizado, o que aponta para um polímero que apresenta cadeia lateral móvel mesmo em sua fase cristalina. Os dados de dinâmica molecular foram corroborados por medidas de T1, T1ρ e TCH. Utilizando filtros dipolares em baixo campo observou-se três temperaturas de transição para o P3EHT: 250 K, 325 K e 350 K. A cristalização desse material é um processo lento. Verificou-se que o mesmo pode se estender por até até 24h a temperatura ambiente. Mudanças no espectro de 13C utilizando CPMAS em alto campo indicam um ordenamento dos anéis tiofeno (empacotamento π – π) como o principal processo de cristalização para o P3EHT. The study of the microstructure and molecular mobility of conjugated polymers is of the utmost importance for the understanding of the physical properties of this class of materials. In the current work we employed nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to shed light into the processes of molecular dynamics and crystallization of the polymer Poly(3-(2’-ethylhexyl)thiophene) - P3EHT. The P3EHT is a model polymer for such a study since it displays a melting temperature well below it’s degradation temperature, this allowed us to probe the crystallization process in situ using NMR. Furthermore it’s similarity to the already popular P3HT makes it a good candidate to active layer in organic electronic devices. A complete assignment of the 13C spectrum was achieved for the P3EHT, using the dipolar dephasing and HETCOR techniques. The molecular movements were probed by DIPSHIFT. We observed a mobility gradient along the side-chain of the material. The low values obtained for the order parameter in comparison to similar experiments done on the P3HT on the literature indicate a apparent increase in the free volume between consecutive chains in the crystalline phase, this is a strong indicative that the addition of the ethyl group to the repetitive unit strongly rearranges the molecules, difficulting packing. Moreover the depth of the DIPSHIFT curves for the side-chain carbons at half the rotor period don’t seem to be a function of the excitation method employed, this points to a polymer that is throughout mobile, i.e. that has carbons with a high degree of mobility even in it’s crystalline phase. This results were corroborated by measurements of T1, T1ρ e TCH. Employing dipolar filters at low field three transition temperatures were observed: 250 K, 325 K and 350K. The crystallization of the P3EHT is a slow process. We found that it took up to 24h for the material to fully recrystallize from the melting at room temperature. Changes in the 13C CPMAS spectra at high fields indicate a ordering of the thiophene rings (π – π stacking) as the primary method for the crystallization in the P3EHT.

Sensores são dispositivos capazes de captar um determinado sinal físico -químico do meio e converte-lo num sinal elétrico mensurável por meio de um transdutor. Biossensor é um sensor que tem como parte funcional um receptor biológico específico a determinado analito alvo. Os sinais físico-químicos experimentados por estes dispositivos são convertidos em sinais elétricos de magnitude proporcional à concentração de um ou mais compostos químicos. Neste trabalho, foi construído um sensor de pH utilizando filmes finos comerciais de óxido de estanho dopado com flúor (FTO) como receptor a íons. O sensor foi feito ligando-se amostras de FTO ao terminal de porta de um transistor de efeito de campo do tipo MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor). Quando colocado em solução, os íons presentes interagem com a amostra sendo adsorvidos na superfície do filme de FTO. O potencial gerado pelos íons adsorvidos modulam a tensão na porta do transistor e, desta maneira, pode -se determinar a concentração dos íons presentes na solução de acordo com a magnitude da resposta do transistor. A este tipo de dispositivo dá -se o nome de EGFET (Extended Gate Field Effect Transistor). O EGFET construído apresentou responsividade de 55 mV/pH e resposta linear em soluções de pH 2 ao 12. Através de técnicas de imobilização enzimática foi possível ligar covalentemente proteínas urease sobre a superfície dos filmes de FTO, convertendo o sensor de pH em biossensor de ureia. Soluções tampão com diferentes pHs e concentrações foram testadas e determinou -se que as condições ideais para o uso deste biossensor de ureia são soluções tampão com pH = 6 e concentração de 10mM. Nessas condições, o biossensor apresentou uma responsividade de 114,5 mV/p(ureia) e linearidade no intervalo de concentrações de ureia entre 3,2.10 -4 e 3,2.10 -2 mol/L. Sensors are devices capable of capturing a certain physical-chemical signal from environment and convert it into a measurable electrical signal by a transducer. Biosensor is a sensor which has a biological sensing element as receptor specific to a particular target analyte. The physical-chemical signals experienced by these devices are converted into electrical signals with magnitude proportional to the concentration of one or more chemical compounds. In this work, we built a pH-sensor using commercial thin films of tin oxide doped with fluorine (FTO) as ions receptor. The sensor was made by linking FTO samples to the gate of a field effect transistor MOS type. In solution, the ions interact with the sample being adsorbed on the surface of FTO film. The potential generated by the ions adsorbed on film\'s surface modulate the gate voltage of the transistor and, in this way, we can determine the concentration of ions present in solution correlated with the magnitude of the transistor response. This kind of device is given the name of EGFET (Extended Gate Field Effect Transistor). The EGFET built exhibits sensitivity of 55 mV/pH and linear response in the range of pH 2 to 12. Through enzyme immobilization techniques we could covalently bind urease proteins on the surface of FTO film, changing the pH-sensor in urea biosensor. Buffer solutions with differents pHs and concentrations were tested and was determined that optimal environment conditions for this urea biosensor is buffer solutions with pH = 6 and 10mM of concentration. Under these conditions, the biosensor showed sensitivity of 114.5 mV/p(urea) and linear response in the range of 3,2.10 -4 to 3,2.10 -2 mol/L

Neste trabalho foi avaliada a influência da adição de PbF2 em várias propriedades, de interesse geral e específico, de vidros oxifluoroboratos de chumbo. As amostras estudadas foram sintetizadas seguindo a fórmula 50BO1,5-(50-x)PbO-xPbF2 (BPP), com x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 30 (% catiônica), e usando o método convencional de fusão seguida de resfriamento rápido (quenching). A modificação da estrutura local destes vidros BPP, causada pela introdução do PbF2, foi avaliada por Espectroscopia no Infravermelho (FTIR). Além do mais, as implicações destas mudanças estruturais sobre as propriedades ópticas, térmicas e elétricas foram monitoradas através das técnicas de Absorção Óptica no Ultravioleta-Visível (UV-Vis), Calorimetria Exploratória Diferencial (DSC) e Espectroscopia de Impedância (EI), respectivamente. As amostras vítreas foram também submetidas à ação de campos elétricos, observando-se um fenômeno de cristalização não espontânea da fase β-PbF2, mesmo abaixo da temperatura de transição vítrea. A partir de um estudo sistemático deste fenômeno, foi possível associar o seu desenvolvimento a um processo de redução: Pb2+ + e- → Pb+, atuando como força motriz da nucleação dos cristais. Esta reação catódica pôde ser validada após constatação, por Difratometria de raios X (DRX), da presença de Pb0 em amostras eletricamente tratadas durante tempos longos, o que implica supor a seguinte reação adicional: Pb+ + e- → Pb0. Por outro lado, para completude do processo de oxirredução, foi proposta a ocorrência da reação F- → e- + ½F2(g)↑ no ânodo. A validação desta reação foi obtida através de ensaios sistemáticos de cristalização com células eletroquímicas do tipo Pt,Ag/BPP/YSZ:PbF2/Ag,Pt, onde YSZ:PbF2. representa um compósito condutor iônico, o qual foi usado para garantir um controle, através de um mecanismo percolativo, do grau de liberdade da migração dos íons F- em direção ao ânodo. Completam esta investigação estudos elétricos no domínio do tempo, tendo sido possível estimar, para os processos de polarização ocorrentes durante a cristalização na interface material-eletrodo, capacitâncias características de reações eletroquímicas (~ 10-3 F), corroborando com a interpretação dada, neste trabalho, para a indução elétrica de cristalização nestes vidros. Por fim, em termos de características microestruturais, notou-se que a fase cristalina formada (β-PbF2) apresentou uma morfologia ramificada (dendrítica), o que é, de fato, típico de cristalização na presença de campo elétrico, o fenômeno passando por reações do tipo redox e envolvendo, segundo a literatura científica, processos eletroconvectivos nos sistemas estudados. The influence of PbF2 addition in various properties, of general and particular interest, of lead oxyfluoroborate glasses was evaluated in this work. The studied samples were prepared by the melt-quenching technique following the formula 50BO1,5-(50-x)PbO-xPbF2 (BPP), with x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 cationic %. The BPP structural modification, caused by PbF2 introduction into the glass matrix, was evaluated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Moreover, the implications of these structural changes on the optical, thermal and electrical properties were monitored, respectively, through Ultraviolet-Visible Optical Absorption (UV-Vis), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Impedance Spectroscopy techniques. For the electric field-treated glassy samples, a non-spontaneous crystallization phenomenon was observed, resulting in β-PbF2 phase formation, surprisingly even below the glass transition temperature. From a systematic study, it was possible to associate the development of this phenomenon with a reduction process: Pb2+ + e- Pb+, which acts as the driving force for crystals nucleation. This cathodic reaction was validated after noting, through X-ray Difratometry (XRD), presence of metallic lead (Pb0) in those samples electrically treated during long times, what implies to infer the following additional reaction: Pb+ + e- → Pb0. On the other hand, for completeness of the redox process, occurrence of the anodic reaction F- → e- + ½F2(g)↑ was proposed. This reaction was validated through systematic crystallization experiments with electrochemical cells of type Pt,Ag/BPP/YSZ:PbF2/Ag,Pt, where YSZ:PbF2 represents composite-like mixtures used in order to guarantee a control, through a percolative mechanism, of the degree of freedom for fluoride migration towards the anode. This investigation is completed by electrical studies in the time domain, from which it was possible to estimate, for processes occurring at the material-electrodes interface, capacitance values (~ 10-3 F) which are characteristic of electrochemical reactions, in agreement with the interpretation given, in this work, for the electrically-induced crystallization in these glasses. Finally, in terms of (micro)structural aspects, it was noted that the formed crystalline phase (β-PbF2) appears with a branched (dendritic) morphology, what is usual during crystallization phenomena in presence of an electric field, these phenomena being likewise a result of redox-type reactions involving, according to scientific literature, electroconvective processes in the studied systems.

Este trabalho descreve os resultados do estudo de materiais como óxido de manganês, nanotubos de carbono e feltro de carbono (puro e recoberto com nanotubos ou polianilina-Pani), assim como do desenvolvimento de dispositivos. Os dispositivos estudados estão relacionados a sensores de pH, utilizando esses materiais como membranas seletivas de H+ . Essas membranas funcionam como parte de dispositivos denominados EGFETs, cujo princípio de funcionamento é semelhante ao ISFET. Inicialmente utilizamos o óxido de manganês produzido através do método hidrotérmico com posterior fabricação de filmes finos desse material através da técnica de spray-pyrolysis. Esses filmes foram depositados variando a temperatura de deposição, a concentração da solução e o tipo de superfície do substrato de vidro, com o objetivo de investigar a resposta elétrica do EGFET em função da concentração de íons de H+ . As melhores sensibilidades foram de 50,1 mV/pH e 75 mV/pH no filmes produzidos no substrato de vidro rugoso e vidro liso, respectivamente, com 2g/l de concentração e temperatura de 80o C em ambos os filmes. Num segundo momento, trabalhamos com a produção de nanotubos de carbono e posterior fabricação de filmes finos também pela técnica de spray-pyrolysis, tendo como parâmetros, os mesmos utilizados na primeira parte. Os filmes finos que melhor responderam foram aqueles produzidos a 80o C no vidro rugoso e 100o C no vidro liso, com sensibilidades de 51,6 mV/pH e 53,1 mV/pH, respectivamente, ambos com 3g/l de concentração. Finalmente, utilizamos os feltros de carbono (FC) como membrana seletiva e também como substrato para os nanotubos de carbono (NTC) e a polianilina (Pani). Como membrana, os feltros tiveram uma sensibilidade de 65,47 mV/pH. NTC purificados e não purificados foram também depositados utilizando FC como substrato. NTC não purificados apresentaram pior resposta, enquanto que a parte que foi purificada teve um ligeiro aumento na sensibilidade, sendo de 67,7 mV/pH. Houve ainda o recobrimento dos FC e dos FC/NTC com a Pani. As membranas que contém Pani, são mais estáveis do que as outras amostras, sendo que a Pani no estado deprotonado tem melhor sensibilidade e estabilidade do a Pani no estado protonado. A melhor sensibilidade obtida com a participação da Pani foi de 46,4 mV/pH, que mesmo assim não supera a das demais amostras. Esses materiais se mostram como potenciais para uso de sensores de pH e posteriormente para uso como biossensores. This work presents the results related to the study of materials such as manganese oxide, carbon nanotubes and carbon felt (pure and with deposition of nanotubes and polyaniline-Pani). The development of devices related to pH sensors is also presented. The materials are used as H+ selective membranes in sensors based on the EGFET configuration, almost similar to the ISFET. We produced manganese oxide by the hydrothermal method with subsequent deposition of thin films using spray pyrolysis. We varied the deposition temperature, concentration of solution and glass substrates surface with the aim of studying the electrical response of the EGFET as a function of the concentration of H+ ions. The best sensitivities were 50.1 mV/pH and 75 mV/pH for films grown on rough and flat substrates, respectively, with a concentration of 2g/l and substrate temperature of 80o C for both films. In the sequence, carbon nanotubes were investigated with the production of thin films also using the spray pyrolysis technique with the same deposition parameters. Films produced at 80o C on rough substrates and at 100o C on flat substrates presented sensitivities of 51.6 mV/pH and 53.1 mV/pH, respectively. Both were produced with a concentration of 3g/l. Finally, carbon felts (FC) were used as selective membranes and also as substrates for the deposition of NTC and Pani. As single membrane FC presented a sensitivity of 65.47 mV/pH. Purified and non-purified NTC were deposited on FC. Non-purified NTC presented the worst response, while purified NTC presented an increase in sensitivity to about 67.7 mV/pH. Pani was then deposited over FC and FC/NTC. Membranes that contain Pani were more stable than other samples. Pani was used either protonated or deprotonated. Deprotonated samples presented a better response. The best response with Pani was about 46.4 mV/pH, which is not as good as the one corresponding to other samples. These materials are promising candidates for a future use as H+ sensors, and also as biosensors.

Ao final da década de 1980, pesquisadores da empresa Eastman Kodak anunciaram as propriedades eletroluminescentes de materiais orgânicos não poliméricos. Seguindo essa linha, em 1990, um grupo de pesquisadores ingleses demonstrou propriedades semelhantes para os polímeros, utilizando-os como elementos ativos de dispositivos emissores de luz. Era este o início de uma nova área de pesquisa que tinha interface na eletrônica e nos novos semicondutores poliméricos. Surgiram os chamados polímeros luminescentes - resultado das descobertas das propriedades semicondutoras dos polímeros e copolímeros, blendas e heteroestruturas orgânico-inorgânicas. Os materiais semicondutores poliméricos apresentam diversas vantagens associadas à sua característica de fácil processamento e baixo custo de produção. Podem ser utilizados na forma de filmes finos que têm boas propriedades mecânicas e que permitem a sua utilização em substratos flexíveis. Diversas empresas como Philips, Sony, Pioneer, DuPont, Kodak e Uniax têm investido fortemente em pesquisa e desenvolvimento de dispositivos eletroluminescentes, memórias, sensores de imagem e outros sensores que aproveitam as propriedades dos polímeros semicondutores. A radiação, numa variada faixa de comprimentos de onda, pode afetar as propriedades de alguns desses polímeros semicondutores. A característica de material semicondutor, inerente a esses materiais, pode ser degradada por efeito de foto-oxidação que pode ser estimulado pela exposição à radiação. Surge a possibilidade de desenvolver dispositivos baseados em polímeros semicondutores para uso em detectores de radiação. Este trabalho consiste num estudo de desenvolvimento de dosímetros poliméricos de radiação para a faixa de comprimento de onda entre 400 nm e 500 nm, especificamente usada em ambientes hospitalares no tratamento intensivo de neonatos. Com o objetivo descrito, foi realizado o estudo de substratos adequados para a finalidade desejada, o desenvolvimento de um processo de deposição para os dispositivos de filmes-finos e o estudo da influência da radiação na faixa do ultravioleta-visível (UV-Vis) em suas propriedades. Das diversas técnicas de deposição de filmes finos existentes, foi selecionada para este estudo, a de deposição por jato de tinta (\"inkjet printing\") devido às suas características de simplicidade, potencial custo baixo e, principalmente, o menor nível de perda do polímero a ser depositado, já que a referida técnica permite a deposição de quantidades mínimas do material. Como material ativo foi selecionado um semicondutor polimérico da família dos polifluorenos, devido ao seu relativamente fácil manuseio. Pesquisadores da área, cada vez mais, acreditam que a impressão por jato de tinta seja uma das técnicas de deposição mais promissoras para a produção em grande escala. O objetivo desta pesquisa é contribuir com um novo instrumento a ser usado no monitoramento da irradiação no tratamento fototerápico da hiperbilirrubinemia no ambiente da neonatologia hospitalar. Atualmente os bebês recém-nascidos são tratados com empirismo considerável tendo em conta não haver procedimentos de controle para a dose da irradiação aplicada ao neonato nas incubadora neonatal das maternidades. Os riscos de hiperbilirrubinemia severa do neonato incluem a possibilidade de surdez, de paralisia cerebral ou mesmo de lesão cerebral em casos extremos. A observada Icterícia pode estar ligada à imaturidade do fígado do bebê. A bilirubinemia é muito freqüente em neonatos e precisa ser tratada para a redução dos citados riscos. O tratamento mais comum é a fototerapia com radiação na faixa do UV-próximo/azul. A fototerapia é realizada por várias sessões de muitas horas que dependem do nível de hiperbilirrubinemia no sangue, TBS (Total Bilirrubine Serum) do bebê. A hiperbilirrubinemia é crítica quando seu nível for igual ou maior que 428 micromol/litro ou 25 mg/dL (Referencia - Previsão e prevenção de hiperbilirrubinemia de neonatal extremo, T.B., Newman et al., Arco Pediatr Adolesc Med/Vol 154, Nov. 2000 pp 1140-1147). Além de permitir reduzir o empirismo do tratamento com o uso de um dosímetro para a faixa de radiação em tela, este pode ser usado para avaliar a condição da fonte de radiação específica de luz usada neste tipo de tratamento. O dosímetro proposto, como instrumento adicional para os neonatologistas poderá monitorar as doses de radiação aplicada durante a fototerapia e evitar excessos, reduzindo o tempo no protocolo de tratamento neonatal. At the end of the 1980s, researchers from Eastman Kodak announced the electroluminescent properties of non-polymeric organic materials. At the beginning of the 1990s, researchers from the UK showed similar properties of organic polymers, using them as active elements in light emitting devices. It was the beginning of a new research area interfacing the electronics and the new polymeric semiconductors. As a result of the findings on the semiconducting properties of polymers and copolymers, blends and organic-inorganic heterostructures, a new class of materials became the research subject of several groups. Polymer semiconductors exhibit several advantages like simple processing and low production cost. They can be utilized as thin-films with good mechanical properties for use in flexible substrates. Several high-tech enterprises like Philips, Sony, Pioneer, DuPont, Kodak and Uniax are investing strongly in the research and development of such materials and devices, including memories, image sensors, light-emmiting devices, among others. Radiation in a very broad range of wavelengths can affect characteristics of some semiconductor polymers. Their inherent semiconducting feature can be degraded by the photo-oxidation effect, activated by radiation exposition. This suggests the possibility of the development of semiconductor polymer based radiation sensing devices. This work deals with a study of radiation dosimeters for the wavelength range of 400 nm to 500 nm, specifically important at the maternity hospitals in the therapy of newborn babies. To cope with this objective, the study of adequate substrates, development of suitable deposition process for the thin-film devices and study of its properties changes with radiation in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) range was done. From the different thin-film deposition techniques, the inkjet deposition technique was selected for this study thanks to its production simplicity, potential low cost an, mainly, because it permits the deposition of minute amounts of material, leading to very little material losses. As the active material a polymeric semiconductor of the fluorene family was selected thanks to its easy processing. Researchers of this area, more and more, believe that the Inkjet Printing is one of the very promising deposition techniques for mass production of those devices. The aim of this research is to offer a new tool to be used in the monitor of the irradiation in the phototherapy for severe hyperbilirubinemia of newborn babies. In most cases newborn babies are treated with a considerably empiric protocol considering the inexistence of procedures to control the radiation doses in the treatments. The risks of extreme neonatal hyperbilirubinemia include possibility of deafness, cerebral palsy or brain damage in extreme cases. Jaundice may be due to the immaturity of baby\'s liver. Bilirubinemia is most frequent in newborn and must be treated to reduce such risks. The most common treatment is phototherapy with nearUV-blue radiation. Phototherapy is accomplished by several sessions of many hours depending on the Total Bilirubin Serum (TBS) found in the baby blood. Hyperbilirubinemia is very dangerous to the near-term newborn when its level is equal or greater than 428 micromol/liter or 25 mg/dL (Reference Prediction and prevention of extreme neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, T.B., Newman et al., Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med/Vol 154, Nov. 2000 pp 1140-1147). Besides reducing the empiric treatments based on the nearUV-blue radiation, the use of a sensor can be important to evaluate the condition of the specific type of lamp used in the treatments. The proposed dosimeter can be an additional instrument for the neonatologists to be used in the determination of the phototherapy radiation dose, thus reducing, in the medical protocol, the jaundice treatment time.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo o estudo da viabilidade de utilização de soluções de poli[2-metóxi,5-(2-etil-hexiloxi)-p-fenileno vinileno] (MEH-PPV), em diversos solventes tais como CHCl3 (Clorofórmio), diclorometano (CH2Cl2), bromofórmio (CHBr3), dibromometano (CH2Br2), uma mistura de diclorometano (CH2Cl2) e diiodometano (CH2I2) e tolueno (C6H5CH3), como dosímetros de radiações ionizantes. A novidade está no fato de que estes dosímetros têm como principal característica a variação da cor, proporcionando uma medida visual e direta da radiação recebida. Além disso, a sensibilidade dos dosímetros pode ser ajustada por meio da variação da concentração das soluções do polímero. Neste trabalho, foi utilizada a radiação gama, 60Co, para os estudos de viabilidade deste dosímetro. Quando submetidos a certas doses de radiação gama, o polímero estudado sofre alterações em suas propriedades óticas e em sua estrutura molecular. Para avaliar as alterações óticas, foram utilizadas medidas de espectroscopia de absorção UV-Visível (UV-Vis) e fotoluminescência. Também foram avaliadas as alterações na estrutura molecular, como conseqüência da exposição à radiação gama por meio de técnicas como ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) e cromatrografia de permeação de gel (GPC). Os Resultados obtidos mostraram que a radiação gama, 60Co, promove, de forma indireta, a diminuição do comprimento efetivo da conjugação do polímero, mais provavelmente em decorrência da quebra da cadeia principal do polímero devido às reações com as espécies reativas, possivelmente nos grupamento vinil. Estas quebras resultam em um deslocamento dos picos máximos dos espectros de absorção para regiões de maior energia (blueshift). Estes deslocamentos dependem não somente da dose de irradiação, mas também do solvente utilizado em da concentração da solução. The present work aims the study of the viability of using solutions of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2\'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV), in several solvents such as chloroform (CHCl3), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), bromoform (CHBr3), dibromomethane (CH2Br2), a mix of dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) and diiodomethane (CH2I2), and toluene (C6H5CH3) as ionizing radiation dosimeters, gamma, in this case. The novelty is in the fact of the dosimeter main characteristic is color change, allowing a visual and direct received radiation measurement. Besides, the sensibility of the dosimeter can be adjusted by the polymer solution concentration variation. In this work, it was used the gamma radiation, 60Co, for the dosimeter viability studies. When exposed to certain doses of this kind of radiation, the studied polymer suffers changes in its optic properties and in its molecular structure. In order to evaluate the optical changes, UV-VIS absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy measures were performed. Besides, the molecular structure changes, as a consequence of the exposure to gamma radiation, were evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The results show that the gamma radiation, 60Co, promotes, indirectly, the decrease of the polymer conjugation length probably due the backbone scission caused by reactions with reactive species, probably in the vinyl side groups. These scissions resulted in a blueshift of the absorption spectra maximum peaks. Theses blueshifts depend on the irradiation dose, the used solvent and the solution concentration.

É grande o interesse em combinar as propriedades mecânicas e elétricas de diferentes materiais poliméricos. Neste trabalho, filmes de Borracha Natural com camadas superficiais condutoras de polianilina (PANI) são preparados e caracterizados por diferentes técnicas. A PANI dopada foi depositada em ambos os lados do filme de borracha por polimerização química \"in situ\" da anilina a temperatura ambiente. O processo da polimerização da PANI \"in situ\" foi otimizado variando a concentração dos reagentes químicos com o objetivo de se obter uma camada de PANI com espessura desejada, boa adesão na borracha e que produzisse também aumento da condutividade elétrica na superfície. As amostras obtidas são caracterizadas usando-se Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura, Microscopia Óptica, Difratometria de raios-X, análise por Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura, análise Termo-Dinâmico-Mecânica, análise Termogravimétrica, Espectroscopia no FT-IR, Ensaio Mecânico e condutividade elétrica na superfície e no volume dos filmes preparados. Os resultados mostram que os filmes produzidos são do tipo multicamadas, pois não há uma interpenetração da PANI na borracha. A melhor condutividade e uniformidade é obtida com filmes preparados com três deposições, atingindo a ordem de 10-7 S/cm The combination of properties of different polymeric materials in one sample is of great interest. In this work natural rubber films covered with a layer of conductive polyaniline (PANI) were prepared and studied by means of several experimental techniques. The doped PANI layer was deposited onto both rubber films surfaces by the \"in situ\" polymerization technique. The polymerization of PANI was performed at room temperature and the deposition process was optimized in order to obtain a PANI layer with an adequate thickness, good adhesion to the rubber and to promote the increase of its surface electric conductivity. Samples were characterized employing the scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, thermo gravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, mechanical analysis and surface/volume electric conductivity. Results showed that the formed films consisted of a PANI layer that did not penetrated in the rubber. The better uniformity of deposition and maximum electric conductivity of the order of 10-7 S/cm was obtained on films that were prepared by deposition of three PANl layers

Neste trabalho é apresentada a descoberta da fotoluminescência (PL) radioinduzida no polímero biodegradável poli(butileno-co-tereftalato) (PBAT). Neste processo, um filme de PBAT, que originalmente não possui fotoluminescência, é exposto a altas doses de radiação gama. Após a exposição, o filme passa a emitir luminescência quando excitado por uma fonte de luz LED com comprimento de onda variando entre 380 nm e 420 nm. A fabricação, caracterização e análise de desempenho dos filmes de PBAT produzidos e expostos a diferentes doses de radiação gama (0 4000 kGy), demonstram que a relação de intensidade fotoluminescente em função da dose (PL x dose) é altamente linear, possibilitando assim o desenvolvimento de um novo dosímetro baseado nas diferentes intensidades de emissão fotoluminescente deste polímero. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo detalhado da relação entre espessura e concentração dos filmes com a intensidade dos espectros de fotoluminescência para uma faixa de dose crescente. Ambos os fatores proporcionaram um aumento considerável da intensidade PL, sendo encontrada a melhor relação PL x dose para a concentração de 0,3 g.ml-1 e espessura de 100 m (7 camadas). Tais parâmetros aumentaram esta relação (PL x dose) em aproximadamente 800%, quando excitados com um LED violeta (405 nm), comparando-se aos primeiros filmes produzidos. Assim como a intensidade PL, os picos de absorção óptica centrados em 345 nm (ABS - UV-Vis) também apresentaram alta linearidade para doses gama variando entre 0 e 750 kGy. Por outro lado, nos espectros de FTIR observou-se uma relação linear entre a intensidade do pico de absorção em 3250 cm-1 e a dose de radiação entre 0 e 4000 kGy. No estudo da fotodegradação dos filmes de PBAT irradiados, a análise da região onde houve formação de crosslinking entre cadeias (gel) e também aonde houve cisão de cadeias, demonstrou que ambos os fenômenos contribuem para a fotoluminescência, sendo que existe uma relação entre o grau de crosslinking e a forma das curvas de PL. Os dados de FTIR deste estudo revelaram ainda o aparecimento de modos de vibração pertencentes às moléculas de NH2, sugerindo que a fotoluminescência radioinduzida do PBAT é devida à formação de um tipo de amina aromática: anel de hidrocarbono ligado a uma molécula de NH2. Devido às características fotoluminescentes desenvolvidas do PBAT, estudou-se um segundo sistema dosímetro (2D) baseado na mudança da cor de emissão da blenda polimérica constituída do PBAT e do polímero conjugado poli[2-metóxi-5-(2-etilhexilóxi)-1,4-fenilenovinileno] - MEH-PPV. Para o sistema MEH-PPV/PBAT, as altas doses de radiação implicaram na degradação do MEH-PPV provocada pela foto-emissão do PBAT e/ou pela própria radiação gama, fazendo com que sua intensidade de emissão PL diminua de forma sincronizada com o aumento da intensidade PL do PBAT para doses entre 0 e 500 kGy. Esta combinação de resultados implicou em um sistema que apresenta mudança de cor de emissão, indo do vermelho ao verde. Os resultados indicam o PBAT e o MEH-PPV/PBAT como possíveis sistemas dosimétricos de baixo custo e fácil processamento, para serem utilizados em embalagens de produtos esterilizados, bem como em controle de processos de irradiação, mostrando assim, ser uma proposta inovadora na utilização de filmes à base de materiais poliméricos para a prática de dosimetria 2D. This work presents the findings of the radioinduced photoluminescence (PL) of the biodegradable polymer poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). In this process, a PBAT film that originally shows no photoluminescence was exposed to high doses of gamma radiation. After the irradiation process, the PBAT film becomes luminescent when excited by a LED light source with wavelength ranging from 380 nm to 420 nm. The fabrication, characterization and performance analyses of PBAT films produced and exposed to different gamma radiation doses (0 4000 kGy) show that the relationship between the photoluminescent intensity and the delivered dose PL x Dose is highly linear, allowing the development of a new dosimeter based on the different photoluminescent emission intensities of this polymer. A detailed study was carried out to analyze the relation between concentration and film thickness with the intensity of photoluminescent spectra for increasing doses. Both parameters provided a considerable increase in the photoluminescent intensity, the best relation PL x Dose being obtained for concentrations of 0.3 gml-1 and thickness of 100 micrometers (7 layers). These parameters increased the PL x dose ratio by approximately 800%, when excited with a violet LED (405 nm), in reference to the films produced in the first batch. As observed for the PL intensities, the intensities of the peak centered at 345 nm in the absorbance spectra (ABS - UV-Vis) showed a high linear relationship for high gamma doses ranging from 0 and 750 kGy. On the other hand, in the FTIR spectra, a linear relationship between the intensity of the peak centered at 3250 cm-1 and the delivered gamma doses was observed for doses between 0 and 4000 kGy. The study of the radio-degradation of gamma irradiated PBAT films, in the dose range where there is chain crosslinking formation (gel) and also chain scission, have demonstrated that both phenomena contribute to the photoluminescence. There is a relationship between the crosslinking degree and the PL curve shape. The FTIR data in this study also revealed the appearance of vibration modes belonging to the NH2 molecules, suggesting that the radio-induced photoluminescence of PBAT is due to the formation of a kind of aromatic amine: hydrocarbon ring attached toNH2 molecule. Due to the developed photoluminescent characteristics of PBAT, a second dosimeter system was studied (2D) based on the change of color emission of the polymeric blends made of PBAT and the conjugated polymer Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV). In this dosimetric system, the high doses of gamma radiation and/or the own photoemission of the PBAT matrix induces the photo-degradation of MEH-PPV polymer, synchronously decreasing its PL emission intensity with the increase of the PL intensity to PBAT, for doses ranging from 0 to 500 kGy. This mechanism implies in the color-changing emissions going from red to green. The results indicate the PBAT and MEH-PV as possible dosimetric system for use in sterile packaging of products as well as control irradiation processes, showing an innovative proposal on the use of films based on polymeric materials for practical 2D dosimetry.

Segundo dados da Organização Mundial de Saúde, até o ano de 2030 a diabetes será a sétima enfermidade causadora de morte no mundo. A diabetes se caracteriza pela variação do nível de glicose no sangue dada ingestão de alimentos ou realização de certas tarefas. Além disso, já é sabido pela comunidade científica atual que células cancerígenas possuem metabolismo diferente quando comparadas a células normais, consumindo uma maior quantidade de açúcar devido a essa anormalidade. No presente trabalho serão apresentados, basicamente, dois tipos de biossensores que possuem grande potencial para tornarem-se monitores contínuos de glicose. Ambos os biossensores utilizam a enzima glicose oxidase como catalisador específico da reação de oxidação do carboidrato. O primeiro apresenta estrutura em escala micrométrica, tem por objetivo a quantificação de glicose em solução em ambiente extracelular e se baseia no sistema EGFET (Extended Gate Field Effect Transistor) com substrato de Fluorine Tin Oxide (FTO). Além do mais, foram utilizados dois protocolos de imobilização da glicose oxidase: quitosana (com uma janela de detecção de 1 a 5mM de glicose) e glutaraldeído (com janela de detecção de 0 a 15 mM de glicose). O segundo apresenta estrutura em escala nanométrica, tem por objetivo a quantificação de glicose em ambiente intracelular e baseia-se no sistema de nanopipetas de quartzo. Com esse dispositivo foi possível estipular a concentração de glicose livre dentro de três linhas de células distintas: Fibroblastos humanos entre 0 e 2.8mM; MCF-7 maior que 4.7 mM; MDA-MB-231entre 3.6 e 4.5 mM. According to the World Health Organization, until 2030 diabetes will be the 7th cause of death worldwide. This disease is characterized by variation on blood glucose levels due to ingestion of specific food and tasks performing. Moreover, it is already known that cancer cells have a different metabolism when compared to normal cells and these abnormal cells have a higher sugar intake due to this abnormality. This work will present, basically, two types of biosensors with great potential to become continuous glucose monitors. Both biosensors use the enzyme glucose oxidase as carbohydrate oxidation catalyzer. The first one presents a micro-metric structure and its goal is to quantify glucose concentration in an extracellular solution. This device is based in EGFET (Extended Gate Field Effect Transistor) system and uses FTO as substrate. Furthermore, two immobilization protocols were used to fix the enzyme to the FTO: chitosan (with final range of 1~5mM of glucose) and glutaraldehyde (with final range of 0~15mM of glucose). The second is a nano-structured biosensor based on nanopipette system and its goal is to quantify intracellular glucose concentration. With this device was possible to stipulate free glucose molecules inside different cell lines: between 0 and 2.8mM for human Fibroblasts; greater than 4.7 mM for MCF-7; and between 3.6 and 4.5 mM for MDA-MB-231.
