Metal projectile points were the earliest non-native made weapons to enter the Plains and would likely have caused significant changes in Protohistoric period warfare. Despite this there has been little effort to identify and study these artifacts in Plains rock art, even though it is almost our only archaeological record of warfare from this period. Recent research at Bear Gulch and Atherton Canyon, located in central Montana, has identified a number of metal projectile points used by shield bearing warriors. Described and discussed along with about 30 other examples from rock art sites across the region, these points provide significant insight into the introduction and earliest use of metal tools on the Plains. The graphic features and associations of depictions of trees in southern African rock art and their value as an ontological and unifying force at the interface of the animal and human worlds are studied. Their physical form leads to a higher metaphysical status in the folklore and cosmology of hunting-gathering peoples.

The usage of modern digital imaging technology for examining ancient rock paintings is discussed by focusing on Torres Strait paintings found in north eastern Australia.

We extracted carbon from a sample removed from a small, non-descript, solid monochrome pictograph at Painted Indian Cave site on the Pedernales River, Blanco Count, Texas (41BC1). It contains red iron oxide pigment and is approximately 10-20 cm in size. The sample was taken with a surgical scalpel with a new blade. Plasma-chemistry was utilized to extract the organic carbon, without getting contamination from inorganic carbon-bearing minerals, calcite and calcium oxalate. Because the background of organic carbon in nearby unpainted rock (limestone) was negligible, the age should be reliable. Further, it is supported by archaeological inference. However, as always with only a single radio-carbon date, especially with minimal carbon extracted, caution is advised pending further study. Radio-carbon analysis at the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory indicated an age of 770 [+ or -]50 years BP. The age is consistent with the image of a bison within the small cave. The depiction of the bison probably corresponds with the earliest Late Prehistoric sightings of bison as they re-entered the south Plains of Texas in larger numbers. Much rock art worldwide was traditionally interpreted in terms of "hunting magic," in part based on the related concept of "sympathetic magic." In the last forty years, these interpretations were disproven in many regions and now are largely ignored as potential explanations for the origin and function of the art. In certain cases this may be premature. Examination of the ethnographic and archaeological evidence from western North America supports the origin of some art in sympathetic magic (often related to sorcery) in both California and the Plains and provides a case for hunting magic as one of a series of ritual reasons for making rock art in the Columbia Plateau. Both case studies emphasize the potential diversity in origin, function, and symbolism of shamanistic rock art. A recent paper by Truncer (2004) perpetuates the recalcitrant misconception that soapstone vessel technology uniformly predates the inception of pottery across eastern North America. Whereas soapstone vessels indeed preceded the local adoption of pottery in limited areas, the bulk of stratigraphic and independent radiometric data supports the conclusion that soapstone vessels either accompanied or postdated the inception of pottery in many parts of the Eastern Woodlands. I reiterate here my criticism of benchmark studies that have been uncritically accepted to support the greater antiquity of soapstone. Given the coincidence of pottery and soapstone in many areas of the Eastern Woodlands, any explanation for the use of soapstone vessels must consider the relative costs and benefits of alternative container technology. Moreover, evidence for use of soapstone vessels in mortuary contexts, caches, and in locations far from geological sources of soapstone suggests that their significance resided not simply in the domestic economy of nut processing, as suggested by Truncer, but in the political economy of group formation and alliance. In the last 10 years, excavations at the Lewis Canyon site have exposed hundreds of petroglyphs buried beneath a mantle of modern sediment that has been redeposited from the surrounding hills. The new glyphs are radically different from the assemblage recorded in the 1930s, which were predominantly abstract geometric designs augmented by a few realistic animal tracks, projectile points, and human figures. The emergent style is dominated by nested serpentine lines, atlatls with greatly exaggerated weights, human and animal tracks, and a small number of human figures. Some of the latter bear a strong resemblance to warriors depicted in the Red Linear style, a miniature local art form with a very limited distribution. The motivation for the expenditure of so much effort in the production of petroglyphs at this location has long been questioned, but excavation has now also uncovered a large tinaja, capable of holding more than 800 gallons of water and once fed by an underground conduit. The supernatural power of water, and especially water that emerges from a subterranean source, provides the rationale for the production of the older, serpentine glyphs, if not the entire assemblage. The tinaja links Lewis Canyon to a series of smaller sites on the Eldorado Divide, over 100 miles to the northwest and, more subtly, to arid-lands rock art traditions in northern Mexico and the Greater Southwest. In 2002, eight pigment samples were collected from three rock art sites in the Big Belt Mountains of west central Montana. Samples from Hellgate Gulch (24BW9), Avalanche Mouth (24BW19), and the Gates of the Mountains (24LC27) were dated using plasma-chemical extraction and accelerator mass spectrometry. The dates were statistically indistinguishable with ages of 1170 [+ or -] 45, 1225 [+ or -] 50, and 1280 [+ or -] 50 B.P When calibrated, these ages range from 650 to 990 cal A.D. This corresponds to the early Late Prehistoric period on the Northwestern Plains. An oxalate accretion sample overlying a painted area at another site, Big Log Gulch (24LC1707), provided a minimum age of 1440 [+ or -] 45 B.P for the rock art present at this site. The dated images at the four sites fit within the Foothills Abstract and Eastern Columbia Plateau rock art traditions. Few rock art sites are known for the islands of Wallacea. This paper reports nine new painted rock art sites located in East Timor during archaeological reconnaissance in 2000 to 2001; bringing the total number of painted rock art sites in East Timor to 15. Both the new and previously known rock art sites in East Timor are reviewed in the context of painted rock art elsewhere in the western Pacific region. They are also evaluated in terms of the criteria used by Ballard (1992) to define the 'Austronesian painting tradition' and the relationship between the art, topography, and language groups for the new sites is described. Motif content, motif placement within the sites, and design elements are compared in a preliminary fashion with that of other painting sites known from East Timor and the western Pacific. The East Timor sites are conformable with Austronesian-painted rock art sites elsewhere although they display some features that appear to be locally or regionally distinctive. It is likely that with systematic survey, and thorough inspection of cave and shelter walls, many more sites will be found in East Timor and elsewhere in Island Southeast Asia. The faded and deteriorated condition of many of the East Timor paintings indicates that recording should be undertaken with some urgency. Archaeological, ethnographic, and historic data suggest the presence in Protohistoric times of a women's ceremonial tradition among Dakota and Lakota groups. The tradition involved creation of distinctive rock art, including deeply ground ungulate tracks, vulvas, and hand- and footprints, along with numerous abraded grooves commonly referred to as tool-sharpening grooves. Production of this rock art was related to vision experiences involving Double Woman, women's crafts, and reproductive concerns. The rock art tradition was largely abandoned as the hide trade placed new demands on women to mass produce hides for trade with outsiders. Women increasingly chose to use imported metal tools instead of creating their own awls at the Double Woman sites. Use of the more durable, but less sacred, metal tools resulted in increased status for hide-workers and their families, while preventing powerful quillwork designs from leaving the family and community. Topics include historical background of area; results of shelter excavation; and conclusions that the San hunter-gatherers lived there in the Stone Age and that the Kora pastoralists lived there during the 19th century.

An argument is presented absolving Theo Schoon of the Dept. of Internal Affairs of retouching the Maori birdman images at Frenchmans Gully between 1946 and 1947. Despite the fact that Schoon was known to retouch rock paintings prior to copying them on paper, a photograph from the 1920s indicates the birdmen had already been retouched before Schoon made his copies of them.

Rider and mount iconography is common in the rock art of northern Chile but it is little investigated and poorly understood. This paper takes a new approach which focuses on the meaning and context of these equestrian images. It surveys the contexts in which equestrian imagery, particularly that associated with Apostle Santiago, is used and the meanings in invokes in colonial period illustrations and contemporary indigenous Andean cultures. These insights form the basis of a new interpretation of the equestrian rock art imagery of the Aiquina area of northern Chile. It is argued that the incorporation of equestrian iconography into rock art was not a simple process of importing exotic items and ideas but a complex process involving the appropriation of imagery and ideas and the renegotiation of their meanings in new cultural contexts.

Samples of organic matter and rock varnish from seven rock-art sites in the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming and Montana were collected for dating purposes. Petroglyphs sampled include Dinwoody-style figures, shield-bearing warriors, and other well-known Plains rock-art motifs. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating of 10 petroglyphs yielded dates from the Early Archaic to the Protohistoric periods. A strong numerical relation between varnish leaching and time was found for petroglyphs older than 1,000 years, permitting the derivation of a cation-leaching curve (CLC) and calibrated cation-ratio (CR) ages for 15 different petroglyphs. No clear numerical relation between varnish leaching and time was found for petroglyphs less than 1,000 years old, possibly due to historical damage or past environmental conditions. As a result, calibrated CR ages could not be derived for six petroglyphs, and they are considered to be only younger than 1,000 years. Although further research is needed to establish whether one CLC can be used for all petroglyphs in the region, these studies constitute the first numerical chronology for rock art in the Bighorn area. Prior to the development of Ledger Book art, Plains Indians painted Biographic art on buffalo robes and other items of clothing. One such piece, obtained in the 1830s by Lorenz Schoch, a Swiss merchant headquartered in St. Louis, is now in the collection of the Bernisches Historisches Museum in Bern, Switzerland. The Schoch war shirt is identified as Sioux and decorated with a series of Early Biographic style pictographs. Based on structural criteria, these paintings are clearly the work of two different artists. Additionally, the pictographs show several stylistic conventions that add significantly to the Biographic art lexicon. As such, the art provides important insight into both the evolution of Biographic art and the function of art in Sioux culture.

The rock art of Writing-On-Stone has been the focus of detailed interpretation relying on concepts of group migration. Indeed, results of previous research at Writing-On-Stone have been pivotal in reconstructions of northwestern Plains groups distributions. It is apparent that many anthropomorphic petroglyphs and pictographs contain elements and co-associations that allow chronological ordering from prehistoric through protohistoric and historic times. Cluster analyses described in this paper offer a more objective means of assessing changes in anthropomorph depictions through time, leading to a critical evaluation of prior concepts concerning stylistic changes and Native group distributions. In particular, the analyses demonstrate that rock-art anthropomorphs at Writing-On-Stone are more strongly interrelated than previously thought. We believe there is no need to invoke a Shoshonean presence in this area to account for differences in late prehistoric and historical-period rock-art anthropomorph styles.

Dampier Archipelago, a scattering of remote islands on the northwest coast of Australia was home to people of the Aboriginal tribes and wallabies who carved stories on rocks for thousands of years. However, due to increased industrialization in this region, there are concerns about possible acceleration of weathering and deterioration of the rock art and hence the government of Western Australia has commissioned a study to determine the role of the industry in the art's deterioration.

The Aqaba-Macan survey is conducted in 1979-1990 to determine the pre-Islamic historical profile of human occupations with the use of archaeological analysis of rock art and inscriptions in Wadi Araba and Aqaba-Macan, Jordan. It is funded by the Australian Research Council and the University of Sydney in collaboration with the Dept of Antiquities in Jordan. Todate, the research project has successfully compiled collections of photographs and archaelogical findings and is in the process of analysing such data which will provide an understanding of the economic and political activities of individuals before the advent of Islam.
