This study examined the influence of the effective embedment depth hef of undercut anchors and the diameter of their heads on the formation of the so-called cone failure angle α. Cone failure formation during simulated anchor pull-out tests was analyzed numerically using the Finite Element Method (FEM) with the ABAQUS software and the XFEM algorithm. The analysis was conducted for three sizes of undercut anchor heads and four embedment depths. The numerical analysis results were compared with field test results obtained during pull-out tests of anchors installed in a rock medium (sandstone). Good agreement was observed between the numerical and field test results. The results of the numerical study are highly consistent with those obtained during the field survey. Moreover, they align closely with findings from previous numerical studies conducted by members of the research team, as presented in earlier publications. For the assumed simulation and field test conditions (sedimentary rocks, gray sandstone), no clear correlation was found between the embedment depth or the anchor head diameter and the value of the cone failure angle in the initial phase of the failure zone development. This result contrasts with certain findings reported in the literature. Many existing studies on anchor bolts focus on material properties or load-bearing capacity, but lack an in-depth analysis of how anchor depth influences the geometry of the failure cone. Anchor bolts, such as rock bolts and concrete anchors, are widely used in civil, geotechnical, and mining engineering for anchorage and ground support. They are used in retaining walls, dry docks, dams, mines, and prestressed concrete structures. Evaluating the grouting condition of anchor bolts is essential to ensure the safety of these applications. Spectrum techniques have been used to develop non-destructive methods for estimating the grouting quality of grouted anchor bolts. The spectrum methods include fast Fourier transform, time–frequency analysis, wavelet transform analysis, and empirical mode decomposition. In this study, we introduce the parameter-optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) method for the spectrum analysis of impact echo signals of anchor bolts. This method overcomes the difficulty of conventional spectrum methods that cannot separate highly coupled natural modes for advanced analysis. The parameter-optimized VMD method enables the generation of a new evaluation index for quantifying bolt grouting conditions, which has the potential to significantly enhance the quality evaluation of anchor bolts compared with conventional analysis of natural frequencies. The utilization of reinforcement cage underreamed anchor bolts is prevalent in the reinforcement of foundation pit engineering, but there are few studies on the reinforcement of soft rock slopes and the influence of its parameters on slope stability. This study combines laboratory tests to analyze the mechanical properties of reinforced and non-reinforced bolts with finite element analysis to model the anchorage support system in soft rock slopes. Key parameters affecting the stability of the slope, such as bolt diameter, expansion section diameter, and anchorage depth, were considered. The findings indicate that the inclusion of a reinforcement cage leads to a more rational distribution of mechanical properties, promoting even axial force distribution to the grouting medium. An increase in bolt diameter enhances slope stability, while the expansion section diameter has minimal impact when a strong bond exists between the grouting body and the rock mass. However, in the absence of such bonding, increasing the expansion section diameter significantly improves slope stability. Deeper anchorage also correlates with higher stability, though the rate of increase in safety factor slows as the anchorage depth approaches the critical slip plane. Rock bolting in underground environments is used for different fundamental reasons, including suspending potentially loosened blocks, clamping small wedges together, inducing a protective pressure arch along the contour of excavated voids to improve the self-supporting capacity of the ground, and providing passive pressure in integrated support systems. In this study, we describe a testing procedure that was developed to investigate the grouted annulus of a rock bolt using a low-cost investigation method. This diagnostic technique was based on the dynamic response of the system, where mechanical vibrations were induced within the rock bolt and the response was recorded by using geophones/accelerometers on the protruding element of the bolt (the collar and head). The collected signal was then processed to estimate the spectral response, and the amplitude spectrum was analyzed to detect the resonance frequencies. A 3D finite element model of the rock bolt and grouting was established to simulate the quality of the coupling by varying the mechanical properties of the grouting. The model's response for the studied geometry of the rock bolt suggested that a poor quality of grouting was usually associated with flexural modes of vibration with a low resonance frequency. Good-quality grouting was associated with a frequency higher than 1400 Hz, where the axial vibration was mainly excited. Our analyses referred to short rock bolts, which are usually adopted in small tunnels. The interpretation of the experimental measurements assumed that the spectral response was significantly affected by the quality of the grouting, as demonstrated by the modeling procedure. The resonant frequency was compared with the results of the model simulation. The method was used to test the quality of rock bolts in a small experimental tunnel carved from andesite rock in Chile. Low-cost shock sensors (piezoelectric geophones) with low sensitivity but a wide frequency band were used. The main research outcome was the development of a reliable method to model the dynamic response of rock bolts in mines or for experimental applications in tunnels. Splitting grouting is widely used to reinforce unfavorable soil stratum. Inclined steel grouting pipe is a type of structure which can achieve splitting grouting in soil stratum. It has been successfully utilized in argillaceous sandstone stratum, but its application in loess stratum has rarely been studied directly. This research aims to compare and analyze the bearing capacity and effective anchorage lengths of inclined steel grouting pipes with anchorage lengths of 6 m, 9 m, and 12 m. Firstly, bearing capacity of inclined steel grouting pipe was compared with that of ordinary grouting pipe. Secondly, bearing capacity of inclined steel grouting pipe with anchorage lengths of 6 m, 9 m, and 12 m were compared and analyzed. Thirdly, effective anchorage lengths of inclined steel grouting pipe with anchorage lengths of 6 m, 9 m, and 12 m were compared and analyzed. Finally, inclined steel grouting pipe average cohesive strength along effective anchorage length section at the interface between cement grouting and soil stratum was compared with that of rock bolt. The field experimental results illustrated that: (1) The bearing capacity of inclined steel grouting pipe with anchorage length of 9 m increases 22.6% compared with that of ordinary grouting pipe. (2) Anchorage length is not a significant influence factor for bearing capacity of inclined steel grouting pipes in loess embankment slope, while anchorage length is a significant influence factor for modulus of load-displacement curves of inclined steel grouting pipes in loess embankment slope. (3) Effective anchorage length of inclined steel grouting pipe in loess embankment slope will be slightly increased when increasing anchorage length, while the ratio of effective anchorage length to total anchorage length will be decreased when increasing anchorage length. (4) Inclined steel grouting pipe average cohesive strength along effective anchorage length section at the interface between cement grouting and soil stratum is at least three times compared with that of rock bolt. The impact of rock bolts on the mechanical behavior of nonpersistent joints, including the intricate interactions between the joints, rock bridges, and rock bolts, has received limited investigation despite their effectiveness in reinforcing rock mass discontinuities. In order to tackle this issue, a variety of normal stresses were applied during direct shear tests conducted on artificial rock-like specimens with nonpersistent joints, both bolted and unbolted. Meanwhile, to measure the deformation in the rock bridge and joint plane region, a set of strain gauges were implemented. The findings indicated that the local shear deformation-shear displacement curves, whether with or without rock bolts, can be categorized into five distinct stages. Application of the rock bolts on the nonpersistent joint plane resulted in making the following two important statements: (a) The rock bolts delay the shear stress transmission along the joint plane from the joint parts to the rock bridge area; (b) The rock bolts limit the dilatancy occurring in both the joint parts and at the rock bridge area. Furthermore, the shear displacement of the bolted nonpersistent joint specimen at the peak shear strength was found to be greater than that of the unbolted nonpersistent joint specimen indicating protection of the rock bridge by the rock bolts. Whether bolted or unbolted, the stiffness values seem to be the same for the nonpersistent joint plane for a selected normal stress; this observation is significantly different from that observed for the persistent joint plane. Rock masses are formed through long-term, complex geological processes, and the presence of joints significantly reduces their strength and increases their deformation. Rock bolts effectively enhance the strength and stability of rock masses and are extensively utilized for reinforcement. According to field investigations, a significant portion of the damage to bolted rock masses stems from shear deformation at joint surfaces. Moreover, roughness affects friction and surface contact, thus influencing the shear behavior between rock and rock bolts. This study considers two crucial factors affecting the shear characteristics of bolted rock joints: joint surface roughness and normal stress. Using the Particle Flow Code discrete element numerical method, the Barton standard joint profile lines were input to establish numerical models of both unbolted and bolted rock joints for direct shear tests. Results reveal that the peak shear stress and stiffness of both unbolted and bolted rock joints increase with rising normal stress and joint roughness coefficient. The peak shear stress and stiffness of bolted rock joints are notably higher than those of unbolted ones, with a maximum increase of 17.5%. Crack development in bolted rock joints occurs in stages of rapid, slow, and stable development, whereas no distinct slow development stage is observed in unbolted rock joints. Additionally, micro cracks in both unbolted and bolted rock joints are primarily tensile cracks, originating around the joint surface and extending outward with increasing shear displacement. These findings offer valuable insights into the microscopic shear mechanics of bolted rock joints and provide practical references for engineering design and applications in rock reinforcement projects. Automatically identifying mine and tunnel infrastructure elements, such as rock bolts, from point cloud data improves deformation and quality control analyses and could ultimately contribute to improved safety on engineering projects. However, we hypothesize that existing methods are sensitive to small changes in object characteristics across datasets if trained insufficiently, and previous studies have only investigated single datasets. In this study, we present a cross-site training (generalization) investigation for a multi-class tunnel infrastructure classification task on terrestrial laser scanning data. In contrast to previous work, the novelty of this work is that the models are trained and tested across multiple datasets collected in different tunnels. We used two random forest (RF) implementations and one neural network (NN), as proposed in recent studies, on four datasets collected in different mines and tunnels in the US and Canada. We labeled points as belonging to one of four classes—rock, bolt, mesh, and other—and performed cross-site training experiments to evaluate accuracy differences between sites. In general, we found that the NN and RF models had similar performance to each other, and that same-site classification was generally successful, but cross-site performance was much lower and judged as not practically useful. Thus, our results indicate that standard geometric features are often insufficient for generalized classification of tunnel infrastructure, and these types of methods are most successful when applied to specific individual sites using interactive software for classification. The rock-socketed pier anchored by inclined anchors (RPIA) is a new type of foundation developed by combining a rock-socketed pier and inclined anchors. Current research on RPIA is relatively limited, and the impact of design parameters on its bearing performance remains unclear. To investigate the uplift-bearing performance of RPIA, a finite-element model that considers the nonlinear properties of materials and multidirectional interactions was developed and verified. Based on this model, numerical simulations were performed on twenty-five RPIA that were designed using the L25 orthogonal array proposed by the Taguchi method, and the uplift load–displacement curve for each RPIA was obtained. Based on the interpretation of the elastic limit, uplift resistance, initial stiffness, and the ductility index for each simulated RPIA, the sensitivity of each factor was examined by analyzing the signal-to-noise ratio and variance. The results indicated that rock strength and pier diameter were the main factors determining the uplift performance of the RPIAs, while the angle of inclined anchors is the most influential factor affecting the ductility of RPIA. The primary role of the inclined anchor is to reduce the extraction of the pier after failure of the side resistance between the pier and rock mass, thus significantly enhancing the ductility of the uplift-loaded RPIA. The vibration waves generated by pressure fluctuations can substantially impair and jeopardize the structural integrity of roadway anchorage within adjacent rock formations, thereby presenting a significant risk to the safety and operational efficiency of mining activities. In order to address this issue and elucidate the response characteristics of roadway-anchored surrounding rock subjected to P-wave and S-wave influences, this study employs a roadway that is experiencing actual impact instability within a mine situated in Xinjiang as the engineering context. The synchrosqueezing wavelet transform, enhanced by a Butterworth filter, is utilized to isolate and filter seismic wave data, thereby facilitating the extraction of time-frequency signals corresponding to both P-waves and S-waves. Subsequently, a dynamic numerical model is developed to simulate the propagation of these vibration waves. An analysis of the dynamic behavior and response characteristics of P-waves and S-waves is performed, focusing on their interaction with roadway anchoring within the surrounding rock at various stages of propagation. The results indicate that weak rock and plastic zones can absorb vibrational waves, with S-waves exhibiting a stronger absorption effect than P-waves. S-waves contribute to increased stress and displacement in the surrounding rock, leading to the accumulation of elastic energy and an expansion of the plastic zone. The rapid fluctuations in the axial force of bolts along the roadway, caused by S-waves, can result in instability within the roadway. In order to investigate the failure mechanism of the reinforced muddy soft rock under the influence of the hydration reaction when ground water is present, a series of confined compressive tests and Acoustic Emission (AE) recordings were conducted subject to various moisture content levels and lateral confining stresses. It was found that the failure modes of the reinforced rock specimen were affected by the moisture content level and the lateral stress σ2 in a way that the load bearing capacity of the reinforced rock would increase with the lateral stress σ2 but decrease as the moisture content increased. An increase in the moisture content would reduce the extent of the influence of the lateral stress on the load bearing capacity of the reinforced rock. In addition, much less AE counts were recorded when the moisture content increased indicating that the crack initiation and propagation in this case was easier due to the reduction of the required external input energy. With increasing moisture content, the failure mode of the specimen gradually changes from sudden and brittle to progressive and ductile. Moreover, the hydration reaction became more significant leading to a complete debonding between the grout and the rock. Anchor rock bolts are among the essential support components employed in coal mine support engineering. Measuring the axial load of the supporting anchor bolts constitutes an important foundation for evaluating the support effect and the mechanical state of the surrounding rock. The existing methods for measuring the axial load of rock bolts have difficulty meeting the actual demands in terms of accuracy and means. Therefore, we propose a novel inverse method for determining the axial load of rock bolts. On the basis of the dynamic relationship between the axial load of the anchor bolt and the strain of the plate, a calculation model for the inverse analysis of the axial load from the plate strain is presented, and it is verified and corrected through finite element analysis and indoor physical experiments. By combining the calculation model with the digital image correlation method, a low costinversion of the axial load of the anchor bolt in actual support engineering is achieved. The experimental results demonstrate that the average errors of the load inversion of anchor bolts in three different states via the theory and method proposed in this paper are less than 8.8% (4 kN), 3.6% (3.2 kN), and 14.7% (5.5 kN), respectively, and the average error of the axial load of the rock bolts in the proposed method is only 4.23 kN. This article investigates the application of eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and hybrid metaheuristics optimisation techniques to predict the axial load bearing capacity of fully grouted rock bolting systems. For this purpose, a comprehensive dataset of 72 pull-out tests was built, considering various influential parameters such as three water-to-grout (W/G) ratios, five ranges of curing time (CT), three different grout admixtures with two different fly ash (FA) contents, and two different diameter confinements (DCs). Additionally, to find out the effect of the mechanical behaviour of grouts on the performance of fully grouted rock bolting systems, seventy-two uniaxial compression strength (UCS) samples were cast and tested simultaneously with pull-out samples. The UCS samples were prepared with the same details as the pull-out samples to avoid any inconsistency. The results highlight that peak load values generally increase with longer curing times, lower W/G, and higher UCS and DC values. The main novelty of this paper lies in its data-driven approach, using various XGBoost models. This method offers a time-, cost-, and labour-efficient alternative to traditional experimental methods for predicting rock bolt performance. For this purpose, after building the dataset and dividing it randomly into two training and testing datasets, five different XGBoost models were developed: a standalone XGBoost model and four hybrid models incorporating Harris hawk optimisation (HHO), the jellyfish search optimiser (JSO), the dragonfly algorithm (DA), and the firefly algorithm (FA). These models were subsequently evaluated for their ability to predict peak load values. The results demonstrate that all models effectively predicted peak load values, but the XGBoost-JSO hybrid model demonstrated superior performance, achieving the highest R-squared coefficients of 0.987 and 0.988 for the training and testing datasets, respectively. Sensitivity analysis revealed that UCS values were the most influential parameter, while FA content had the least impact on the maximum peak load values of fully cementitious grouted rock bolts. Anchorage failure occurs mostly at the anchorage interface, and the mechanical mechanism of the anchorage interface is the key point and difficulty in the analysis and research of anchorage. In order to study the mechanics and failure mechanism of the anchorage interface, the shear failure characteristics of the anchorage interface and the deformation rule of the anchored rock under different rib spacings were analyzed through the indoor plane anchorage pull‐out test. Reasonable rib spacing can significantly improve the shear strength of the anchored solid. Finite element software ABAQUS was used to create an axisymmetric plane model of rock bolt pull‐out under different rib conditions to simulate the whole process of rock bolt pull‐out and anchorage interface failure. The results show that during the pull‐out process of anchorage rock mass, stress concentration zones occur at rib corners, and peak shear stress moves to the depths of the anchorage section. As the load increases, cracks emerge from the top of the rib and the edge of the rib angle of the rock bolt and propagate to the deep anchorage along the edge of the costal angle, resulting in damage at the rock mass interface. Load–displacement curves of different transverse rib shapes, heights, widths, and spacings indicate that rib changes affect the anchor‐bearing limit. The anchoring failure mode changes from rib wear and spreading slip, rib shear convex body propagation to interfacial crack propagation, and rib causes varying degrees of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The present paper reports on various test methods and techniques which have been developed throughout the last decades. These methods have been used to evaluate both axial and shear performance of tendons under impact loading mode. Based on the literature review conducted on the scientific documents, published between 1992 and 2024, the developed facilities mainly work based on the direct impact and momentum transfer methods. In the direct impact method, which can be done in-situ and in the laboratory, the impact energy is applied by a mass freely falls to the test sample. In the momentum transfer method, the test assembly, consisting of both the mass and test sample free-fall at the beginning of the test until the movement of the assembly is halted by a stopper, and the momentum of the mass is transferred to the test sample. Besides, most of the current facilities are working based on the direct impact method. It was also found that less research have been conducted on dynamic shear testing, especially high-strength cable bolts, as most of the facilities have been designed for pull testing. In addition, it was found that in dynamic pull-out tests of rock bolts, two main mechanisms of energy absorption are identified: steel plastic deformation and bolt sliding within the encapsulation medium. The first impact plays a key role in energy absorption, causing significant permanent displacements, while the energy consumed in displacing the bolt is more indicative of dynamic behavior than the total input energy. According to the results, the tendons that undergo static deformations before dynamic loading are more prone to failure as some parts of their performance have already lost. Meanwhile, differences between dynamic and static shear tests suggest that dynamic tests require less energy for failure, as friction is ineffective in impact loading. Finally, the study highlights gaps in the current understanding of tendon performance under impact loading, with potential research directions aimed at improving safety in underground excavation. Undercutting anchors are structural elements used in construction and geotechnics to stabilize both structures and soils. In actual underground rock engineering, to prevent the deformation and damage of the rock mass, rock bolt reinforcement technology is commonly employed to maintain the stability of the surrounding rock. Therefore, studying the anchoring and crack-stopping effect of rock bolts on fractured granite rock mass is essential. It can provide significant reference and support for the design of underground engineering, engineering safety assessment, the theory of rock mechanics, and resource development. In this study, indoor experiments are combined with numerical simulations to explore the impact of fracture dip angles on the mechanical behavior of unanchored and anchored granite samples from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives. It also investigates the evolution of the anchoring and crack-stopping effect of rock bolts on granite containing fractures with different dip angles. The results show that the load-displacement trends, displacement fields, and debris fields from indoor experiments and numerical simulations are highly similar. Additionally, it was discovered that, in comparison to the unanchored samples, the anchored samples with fractures at various angles all exhibited a higher degree of tensile failure rather than shear failure that propagates diagonally across the samples from the regions around the fracture tips. This finding verifies the effectiveness of the numerical model parameter calibration. At the same time, it was observed that the internal force chain value level in the anchored samples is higher than in the unanchored samples, indicating that the anchored samples possess greater load-bearing capacity. In order to quantitatively calculate the critical depth and critical load of mines affected by rock burst, and to achieve effective prevention and control of rock burst in coal mines, this paper proposes a mechanical model for predicting the occurrence of rock burst in coal mine roadways based on catastrophe theory. Additionally, a theoretical calculation formula for initiating rock burst is derived. The first step was to establish a mechanical analysis model, which directly correlated with the in-situ stress, physical and mechanical characteristics of the coal-rock mass, and engineering structural parameters. Following this, a mechanical instability criterion was derived for the key load-bearing circle within the surrounding rock of the roadway. In the final step, the critical depth and load for rock burst initiation were verified for 25 distinct coal mines in China that were prone to rock burst hazards. The research results demonstrate that the discrepancy between the theoretically calculated critical depth and the actual measured statistical values was less than 35%. In addition, the difference between the theoretically determined critical depth and the value calculated by Pan Yishan was less than 32%. Notably, the ratio of the theoretically calculated critical load to the uniaxial compressive strength of the coal-rock mass ranged from 0.38 to 1.93. This aligns with empirical data on rock burst occurrences, as set out in the engineering classification standards for rock masses. Friction properties of rock are closely connected with the anisotropy. The anisotropy of rock friction can provide a valuable assessment for geotechnical and geological engineering. In this study, the rotary friction tests were conducted to analyze the water effect on the friction property and the friction anisotropy of the four types of rock. The drilling response model (DD-model) was employed to characterize the rotary friction behavior of the rocks. The parameters of this model include the three types of friction parameters: 1/ς, μ, and f, where 1/ς and μ are constant, and f is a variable. A quantitative method is proposed for assessing the anisotropy of rock friction. The results of the rotary friction tests indicate that the relation between torque force and thrust force conforms to the DD-model. The changes of two friction constants 1/ς and μ from dry state to water-saturated state suggest that the water effect on the friction strength of the rocks exhibits significant anisotropy. The friction strength determined by the friction variable f increases first, then decreases, and finally stabilizes with the increasing of depth. AIf is an anisotropy index calculated by the proposed method. The percentage difference of the average value of AIf between water-saturated and dry states shows the degree of the water effect on the friction anisotropy of the rocks, mudstone (MU) > granite (GR) > fine sandstone (FS) > argillaceous siltstone (AS). Layered composite roofs are characterized by developed bedding fissures, resulting in severe deformation and damage of rock bolts at the top of the roadway, as well as a poor roadway support effect. Increasing pretension force is an effective way to enhance the stiffness of the rock bolt support system. To clarify the influence and mechanism of the pretension force on the support effect of rock bolts in the layered roof, a roadway model of the layered roof was established using the interface unit of FLAC3D, and the simulation rock bolts were constructed using the pile unit, which can simulate the mechanical behaviors of rock bolts, such as tension, shear, bending, fracture, and anchor failure, and the pretension force was applied. On this basis, the deformation and failure characteristics and influencing factors of rock bolts in the layered roadway roof under different surrounding rock conditions were simulated and analyzed. The research shows the following: ① Field measurements showed minor shear deformation in the rock bolts at the center of the roadway roof, with lateral displacements of 5.7 cm and 5.3 cm. Significant shear deformation occurred in the rock bolts at the roof corners, with lateral displacements of 18.2 cm and 17.6 cm. ② Simulations of rock bolt deformation characteristics matched the field measurements closely, confirming the reliability of the simulation method, parameter selection, and calculation sequence. ③ The primary factors affecting rock bolt deformation are the structural plane strength and surrounding rock strength. Rock bolts are most susceptible to lateral displacement when the structural plane strength is low, the strength difference between rock layers is large, and the weaker layer is below the structural plane. Coal‐measure strata is a typical layered structure, a better understanding of the bearing characteristics of fully grouted bolts in layered rock mass is of great significance for roadway support. However, limited studies have been conducted to investigate the bearing performance of fully grouted bolts in layered rock mass. In this paper, a numerical model of fully grouted bolt in layered rock mass was established, and a tri‐linear bond–slip model of the anchorage interface was imported into the numerical model by the user‐defined Fish language. The effects of strata sequence, strata thickness, and strata number in layered rock mass on the bearing performance of fully grouted bolts were systematically analyzed. The results show that fully grouted bolts in soft–hard type (SH‐type) layered rock mass has higher bearing capacity. The greater the thickness of the soft rock in the layered rock mass, the more significant the influence of the strata sequence on the bearing performance of fully grouted bolts. The bearing capacity of fully grouted bolts decreases with the increase of the thickness ratio of soft rock to hard rock. The greater the thickness of the hard rock in the layered rock mass, the more beneficial to the bearing performance of fully grouted bolts. With the increase of the strata number, the bearing capacity of fully grouted bolts gradually decreases. For bolt support of layered rock mass, the deep anchoring foundation of fully grouted bolts should be arranged in hard rock or elastic zone rock as much as possible, and rock grouting can be adopted to reduce the difference in mechanical properties between layered rock mass and improve the durability of fully grouted bolts. Background: The dynamic mechanical properties and permeability evolution of deep rocks under coupled osmotic-mechanical conditions are vital for evaluating the stability of surrounding rock in deep rock engineering and further improving deep mining efficiency. However, there is currently no valid experimental system to measure both the dynamic mechanical response and the permeability evolution of deep rocks. Objective: In this study, a novel experimental system is developed for determining dynamic compressive properties and permeability evolution of deep rocks subjected to coupled differential pore pressure and confinement. Methods: The experimental system is composed of a dynamic loading system, an in-situ stress system, a differential pore pressure system, and a data acquisition system. The differential pore pressure system is introduced in the dynamic loading system, and the validation of the proposed system is verified by checking the stress wave propagation in the bars and the dynamic force balance on the two loading ends of specimens. It indicates that the differential pore pressure device added to the dynamic loading system barely influences the measurement of the dynamic behaviors of rocks. A homogenous green sandstone (GS) is employed to verify the feasibility and reliability of the proposed system. Dynamic compressive strength, permeability evolution, and failure mode of GS under cyclic dynamic impact loading in combination with coupled osmotic-confining pressure are explored using the proposed system. Results: The stress–strain curves change with the increase of impact number, and the cyclic impacts deteriorate the dynamic compressive strength of GS. The permeability of GS first increases and then decreases with the impact number. The differential pore pressure enhanced the permeability of GS under the same impact cycle. The main fracture mode of the GS specimen is mainly compressive-shear fracture in combination with a tensile fracture in the middle of the specimen due to the coupling effect of the reflected stress wave and the osmotic-confining pressure. Conclusions: The proposed experimental system is valid and effective to measure and observe the dynamic compressive behaviors and permeability evolution of rocks under coupled osmotic-mechanical conditions. This paper presents a novel bolt looseness detection method for power transmission towers based on vibration signal analysis. The proposed method utilizes pulse excitation to extract the vibration signal of the tower, which is then adaptively decomposed using the Variational Mode Decomposition of Spider Wasp optimizer (SWVMD). This overcomes limitations of traditional Variational Mode Decomposition methods by leveraging bio‐inspired optimization to improve signal decomposition. Simulated signals processed with different optimization methods verify the superiority of the SWO approach. Field tests on a 110‐kV transmission tower further demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SWVMD technique for analyzing on‐site vibration data. A new improved intrinsic multiscale sample entropy feature is also introduced for bolt state characterization. A Spider Wasp Support Vector Machine classifier is developed to realize accurate bolt loosening monitoring using the extracted features. Dynamic response tests under varying bolt conditions show that the method can identify early loosening and reduce tower damage risks compared to conventional techniques. I-shaped concrete girders are widely used in precast bridge and roof construction, making them a common structural component in existing infrastructure. Despite well-established strengthening techniques using various innovative materials, such as externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement, the shear strengthening of an I-shaped concrete girder is not straightforward. Several research studies have shown that externally bonded CFRP reinforcement might exhibit early debonding at the concave corners of the I-shape, resulting in a marginal increase in shear capacity. This research study aims to assess the performance of two different CFRP shear strengthening strategies for I-shaped concrete cross-sections. In the first strategy, CFRP was bonded along the I-shape of the cross-section with the provision of additional anchorage. In the second strategy, the I-shape was transformed into a rectangular shape by using in-fill blocks over which the CFRP was bonded in a U-configuration. In addition to the strengthening strategies, the investigated parameters included two different materials for the in-fill blocks (conventional and aerated concrete) and two different anchoring schemes (bolted steel plate anchor and CFRP spike anchor). To avoid testing on large-scale girders, a new test methodology has been implemented on concrete I-sections. The test results demonstrate the feasibility of comparing different shear strengthening configurations dedicated to I-sections. Among other findings, the results showed that the local transformation of the I-shape to an equivalent rectangular shape could be a viable solution, resulting in shear strength enhancement of 12% to 53% without and with the anchorages, respectively. Friction-type bolted joints are widely used in both the civil and aerospace industries. Uncontrolled excessive bolt clamping force can cause damage to the laminated fiber-reinforced polymeric (FRP) composite through the thickness and damage the joint before applying the service loads. The effect of the friction coefficient (between 0 and 0.3), bolt clearance, joint type, and other parameters on failure modes and the maximum bolt clamping force of the carbon FRP lapped joint is studied. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model consisting of a bolt, a washer, a laminate FRP composite plate, and steel plates was developed for the simulation of the double- (3DD) and single (3DS)-lapped bolted joint. The FE model was validated by using experimental results and was able to predict the experimental results by a difference of between 2.2 and 6.7%. The joint capacity of the clamping force was found to be greatly increased by adopting the double lap technique, which involves placing an FRP composite plate between two steel plates. Also, it was recommended to use an internal washer diameter less than or equal to the FRP composite plate hole diameter since a larger washer clearance can produce higher contact pressure and reduce the resistance by 22%. Rock masses are formed through long-term, complex geological processes, and the presence of joints significantly reduces their strength and increases their deformation. Rock bolts effectively enhance the strength and stability of rock masses and are extensively utilized for reinforcement. According to field investigations, a significant portion of the damage to bolted rock masses stems from shear deformation at joint surfaces. Moreover, roughness affects friction and surface contact, thus influencing the shear behavior between rock and rock bolts. This study considers two crucial factors affecting the shear characteristics of bolted rock joints: joint surface roughness and normal stress. Using the Particle Flow Code discrete element numerical method, the Barton standard joint profile lines were input to establish numerical models of both unbolted and bolted rock joints for direct shear tests. Results reveal that the peak shear stress and stiffness of both unbolted and bolted rock joints increase with rising normal stress and joint roughness coefficient. The peak shear stress and stiffness of bolted rock joints are notably higher than those of unbolted ones, with a maximum increase of 17.5%. Crack development in bolted rock joints occurs in stages of rapid, slow, and stable development, whereas no distinct slow development stage is observed in unbolted rock joints. Additionally, micro cracks in both unbolted and bolted rock joints are primarily tensile cracks, originating around the joint surface and extending outward with increasing shear displacement. These findings offer valuable insights into the microscopic shear mechanics of bolted rock joints and provide practical references for engineering design and applications in rock reinforcement projects.

Rock bolting in underground environments is used for different fundamental reasons, including suspending potentially loosened blocks, clamping small wedges together, inducing a protective pressure arch along the contour of excavated voids to improve the self-supporting capacity of the ground, and providing passive pressure in integrated support systems. In this study, we describe a testing procedure that was developed to investigate the grouted annulus of a rock bolt using a low-cost investigation method. This diagnostic technique was based on the dynamic response of the system, where mechanical vibrations were induced within the rock bolt and the response was recorded by using geophones/accelerometers on the protruding element of the bolt (the collar and head). The collected signal was then processed to estimate the spectral response, and the amplitude spectrum was analyzed to detect the resonance frequencies. A 3D finite element model of the rock bolt and grouting was established to simulate the quality of the coupling by varying the mechanical properties of the grouting. The model’s response for the studied geometry of the rock bolt suggested that a poor quality of grouting was usually associated with flexural modes of vibration with a low resonance frequency. Good-quality grouting was associated with a frequency higher than 1400 Hz, where the axial vibration was mainly excited. Our analyses referred to short rock bolts, which are usually adopted in small tunnels. The interpretation of the experimental measurements assumed that the spectral response was significantly affected by the quality of the grouting, as demonstrated by the modeling procedure. The resonant frequency was compared with the results of the model simulation. The method was used to test the quality of rock bolts in a small experimental tunnel carved from andesite rock in Chile. Low-cost shock sensors (piezoelectric geophones) with low sensitivity but a wide frequency band were used. The main research outcome was the development of a reliable method to model the dynamic response of rock bolts in mines or for experimental applications in tunnels. Albeit limited to the current specific geometries, the modeling and testing will be adapted to other anchor/bolt options.

Anchor bolts, such as rock bolts and concrete anchors, are widely used in civil, geotechnical, and mining engineering for anchorage and ground support. They are used in retaining walls, dry docks, dams, mines, and prestressed concrete structures. Evaluating the grouting condition of anchor bolts is essential to ensure the safety of these applications. Spectrum techniques have been used to develop non-destructive methods for estimating the grouting quality of grouted anchor bolts. The spectrum methods include fast Fourier transform, time–frequency analysis, wavelet transform analysis, and empirical mode decomposition. In this study, we introduce the parameter-optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) method for the spectrum analysis of impact echo signals of anchor bolts. This method overcomes the difficulty of conventional spectrum methods that cannot separate highly coupled natural modes for advanced analysis. The parameter-optimized VMD method enables the generation of a new evaluation index for quantifying bolt grouting conditions, which has the potential to significantly enhance the quality evaluation of anchor bolts compared with conventional analysis of natural frequencies. This study uses impact response to establish a new benchmark for the integrity diagnosis of anchor bolts, paving the way for more accurate and reliable safety assessments.

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) anchor bolts are a new type of high-performance nonmetallic anchor with significantly higher tensile strength, a lighter weight, better corrosion resistance, and a lower cost than steel bars. Therefore, exploring the durability and bonding performance of GFRP anchor systems is of great importance for the structural design of protective engineering, especially in coastal environments. However, insufficient research has been conducted on the durability of GFRP resin bolts in seawater conditions, with no universal standard on the pullout testing of GFRP bolts. To study the durability and bonding performance of GFRP resin bolts, durability experiments were conducted in this work using artificial seawater, and the pullout tests were conducted using a large-scale concrete platform with different compressive strengths (21.2, 40.8, and 61.3 MPa). The results of the durability experiments indicated that the strength variations of the GFRP rods and epoxy resin materials in artificial seawater environments were less than 5%. Subsequently, indoor pullout tests using steel tubes filled with epoxy resin were conducted, and the test results indicated a critical anchor length value. Pullout tests of the GFRP resin bolts embedded in large-scale concrete blocks were also conducted with different strengths. According to the test results, all GFRP resin bolts embedded in the three concrete blocks with different compressive strengths exhibited rod fracture failure. The failure mode was not controlled via the compressive strength of the concrete blocks due to the high bonding strength between the resin and the rod, as well as between the resin and the concrete. Therefore, this GFRP resin anchor system could fully utilize the tensile strength of GFRP rods. This research offers significant practical value in verifying the safety and reliability of GFRP resin bolts in corrosive marine service environments, and it contributes to the application and development of GFRP materials in the engineering field, serving as a valuable reference for the structural design and further study of GFRP bolts. The main objective of implementing primary ground-controlling methods, such as applying rock bolting systems, is to increase the strength of surrounding rock mass. Among all rock bolting systems, fully grouted rock bolting systems are the most popular and reliable retaining systems due to their simplicity, availability of materials, ease of installation in the field, and cost-effectiveness. While these types of rock bolts experience both axial and shear forces, understanding their response to axial loads remains complex and dependent on several factors. Extensive research has addressed the overall behaviour of the fully grouted rock bolting system, but a systematic review of the axial load transfer mechanism and its impact on overall performance is lacking. This study addresses this gap by employing a bibliometric analysis of 77 peer-reviewed publications to explore the current state of knowledge regarding the axial load transfer mechanism in fully grouted rock bolting systems. The analysis identifies influential journals, publishers, researchers, highly cited articles, and emerging keywords within this field. Furthermore, it reveals three key parameters significantly impacting the axial behaviour: (a) rock mass and boundary conditions, (b) mechanical behaviours of the grouts, and (c) the geometry and surface profile of the rock bolt. These parameters are subsequently discussed in detail, highlighting their influence on the axial performance of the system. The procedure of building a quasi-3D geometry of a numerical model of an underground post-mining facility is presented in the article. For this purpose, measurements were made, based on the terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology, of a fragment of St. John adit, which is part of the underground tourist route "Geopark" St. Johannes Mine in Krobica in Lower Silesia in Poland, in the neighborhood of Krobica, Gierczyn and Przecznica – the places located in the vicinity of the well-known health resort Świeradów Zdrój. TLS, as one of the most advanced mining surveying technologies, enables accurate mapping of even the most complex geometries of underground mining facilities. This opens wide possibilities in the construction of more accurate numerical models of the behavior of the rock mass around such underground objects. As a result, more reliable calculation results are obtained, which are the basis for designing mining support protection, for example, with rock bolting. This translates into an improvement in the safety of underground excavations, in the conditions of exploitation in mining as well as in historical post-mining excavations made available to tourists. In the construction of the geometry of numerical model, software such as Trimble RealWorks was used to orientate individual "point clouds" from measurement stations. CloudCompare software was also used to generate cross sections to the adit axis, and AutoCad software was used for processing and spatial orientation of a selected characteristic cross section. Using the latest version of the FLAC 3D v.9.0 software, the excavation cross-section geometry obtained from measurements was mapped to and discretized (i.e., meshed), giving it a third dimension at the same time. The use of prestressing anchor active support technology in tunnel engineering is becoming morecommon. However, the support characteristics and mechanism of action have not been fully understood for shallow, large-span rocky tunnels. In order to investigate the bearing characteristics of the surrounding rock under the prestressed anchor support system, a concealed excavation station of Qingdao Metro Line 6 was used as the engineering background, and based on the similarity principle of formulating experimental materials for stratum and support structure modelling, the bearing characteristics of the anchors under the prestressed anchor and ordinary anchor support were investigated by hydraulic loading tests. The results indicate that: ① The interaction between prestressed anchors and the surrounding rock creates a load-bearing anchor solid that can effectively support most of the overlying loads. The application of prestressed anchors during the overburden loading process increased the warning load value of tunnel instability damage by 42.8% and the ultimate load value by 41.2%. ② The overburden loading process involved the prestressing anchors going through the tight anchorage load holding stage and the de-anchorage unloading stage. Simultaneously, the lining underwent the strain accumulation stage, strain surge stage, and strain release stage during the overlay loading process.③ The prestressed anchor under active support has better force synergy with the rock body than an ordinary anchor, without the axial force mutation phenomenon. This allows the support performance of the anchor to be fully utilized. The design of anchor bolt in tunnel engineering mostly depends on empirical method and analogy method. In order to study the mechanical effect of surrounding rock in prestressed anchor bolt support system, a mechanical coupling model of prestressed anchor bolt and surrounding rock is established. Considering the damage effect of surrounding rock excavation, the analytical expressions of stress distribution and radial displacement of surrounding rock after tunnel excavation are derived by elastic-plastic mechanics theory. The finite difference software FLAC3D is used to verify and analyze the influence of prestressed anchor parameters on the state of surrounding rock. The results show that the maximum tangential stress and the radius of plastic zone of surrounding rock in theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are 4.77 MPa, 15 m and 4.49 MPa, 15.86 m respectively. The stress distribution and displacement of tunnel surrounding rock calculated by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are basically the same. The rationality of theoretical analytical solution is verified in IV and V grade surrounding rock strata. With the increase of pre-tightening force, the radial displacement of surrounding rock in plastic zone and the radius of plastic zone gradually decrease, while the elastic zone is basically unaffected. When the length of the free section of the bolt is located in the plastic zone, the radial displacement of the plastic zone and the radius of the plastic zone of the surrounding rock gradually decrease with the increase of the length of the bolt. In practical engineering, the pre-tightening force of bolt should be increased as much as possible. The increase of bolt length has limited control effect on the displacement of surrounding rock and the development of plastic zone. In response to the shortcomings of the small support scope of single anchor cable and failure to fully utilize the joint anchoring for surrounding rock, this study summarizes the classification of basic support forms for coal mine roadway surrounding rock and clarifies the main composition and mechanism of anchor cable beam-truss structure. A mechanical model of roadway roof beam under the conditions of no support, single anchor cable support, and anchor cable beam-truss structure support at both ends of the roadway is constructed, and the force and maximum bending moment of roadway roof beam under different support types are compared and analyzed. The study clarifies the bending moment reduction rate of anchor cable beam-truss structure relative to unsupported and single anchor cable support and combines numerical simulation to analyze the response laws of anchor cable beam-truss to prestress distribution and stress shell in roadway surrounding rock. Based on the on-site engineering application of a typical large-deformation mining roadway in a deep coal mine, the important role of anchor cable beam-truss structure in ensuring the safety and stability of surrounding rock in deep high-stress and intense-mining large-deformation roadway is revealed, providing technical references for surrounding rock control of similar conditions in deep roadways. Adjacent cyclic explosions significantly impact the stability of underground anchored caverns. Based on the similar model test of the vault explosion of the anchored cavern, the dynamic analysis finite element software ANSYS/LSDYNA(18.0) was used to establish a model of the straight wall side explosion of the underground anchored cavern and conduct a numerical simulation. When the total amount of explosion load is the same, we compared the stress time history curve, displacement time history curve, tunnel wall displacement, and circumferential strain curve of the surrounding rock in the underground anchored cavern (under both a high-level single-side blast and a low-level cyclic side blast). We obtained the dynamic response rules of the surrounding rock. By comparing the damage evolution process of the surrounding rock in the two situations, the damage accumulation law of the surrounding rock was analyzed. At the same time, the axial stress distribution characteristics of underground anchor cavern anchors under the action of cyclic explosion were studied. The findings demonstrate that when the total level of blast load adjacent to the cavern is the same, the displacement and circumferential peak strain of surrounding rock and the axial stress of rock bolt in the high-level single explosion are greater than those in the low-level cyclic explosion. However, compared to a single explosion, the rock mass suffers more damage in the cyclic explosion. This study will provide engineers with information that will assist them with a better understanding of the cumulative damage mechanisms of surrounding rock, as well as the stress characteristics of rock bolts under dynamic loads near the explosion site, which will be used to design underground caves with anti-blast features. The longwall system is an extraction system commonly used in coal mining in many countries, including Poland. One of the methods for reducing extraction costs is the dual use of the gateroad. In the first instance, the gateroad serves as the tailgate, and during the exploitation of the second coal panel, it functions as the headgate. Such a situation requires maintenance of the roadway behind the longwall face, which is typically challenging, due to significant stress-related loads on the support and its substantial deformation. The support design for this kind of roadway should take into consideration the dual impact of exploitation pressure and the caved zone influence behind the longwall face. This article presents the results of in-situ research conducted on two roadways behind the longwall face. In both roadways, the effectiveness of specially designed steel arch frames and rock bolt patterns were examined to minimize roadway deformations and maintain their functionality. The research project was comprised of several stages. Initially, mining and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the geomechanical parameters of the rocks. Subsequently, excavation stability and functionality forecasts were performed based on the authors' empirical indicators. Then, numerical analyses were carried out to design support schemes (steel arches and rock bolt) in both roadways. A fully automated monitoring system with programmed data loggers was designed to check the behaviour of a specific rock mass and the support elements. The load on the steel arch support was measured with the help of load cells, while the load on the rock bolt support was carried out with the help of measurement bolts. Behind the longwall face, the loads on the wooden cribs set from the goaf side were also monitored. Additionally, the measurement station was equipped with extensometers to monitor the movement of roof layers and stress meters to determine changes in rock mass stress. Laser scanning or traditional surveying methods were also used to verify the support schemes through roadway convergence measurements. The obtained results allowed us to draw conclusions regarding the optimization of support schemes and to give recommendations for the practical application of specific reinforcements in excavations maintained behind the longwall face. The theory and technology of rock bolting are fundamental research topics for strata control in civil and mining engineering. Rebar bolts are commonly used for roadway primary support in underground coal mine. To adapt to deep resource mining, a new left threaded rebar bolt has been developed. Compared to conventional rebar bolts, the result of installation test showed that the new bolt reduced of 41.5% and 57.9% in stirring resistance force and torque, respectively. In laboratory pullout tests, PVC and aluminum sleeves were used to simulate weak and medium strength surrounding rocks. The average peak pullout force, displacement at the peak load and energy absorption increased by 27%, 107% and 108%, respectively, using PVC sleeve; and increased by 113%, 109% and 212%, respectively, using aluminum sleeve. Field tests were conducted under soft coal, hard coal and medium strength rock geo-conditions. Different borehole depths were selected to precisely calculate the average anchorage performance of the new bolt. Results showed that the average peak pullout force of the new bolt increased by 37%, 38% and 28%, respectively, under different surrounding rock conditions. Moreover, based on on-site test results, the pullout curves in field-testing were summarised and classified into 6 different patterns, which were discussed from a viewpoint of causality mechanism. The research findings validate that the newly developed bolt has better anchorage performance compared to conventional rebar bolts, making it a new anchorage material for deep resource mining. This study investigates the structural performance of assembled rib-plate bridge abutments (ARBAs) with two different connection methods: bull leg bolt and flange connections. In addition, we explored the bending and shear performance of the connection parts and related areas to assess the damage characteristics and modes of these ARBAs. Utilizing model testing, a numerical analysis was conducted to define the force performance of the ARBA, with reference to a cast-in-place rib-plate abutment. The research results indicate that the bearing capacity and deformation capacity of the cap part of the assembled ribbed slab abutment model with cow leg connections are lower than those of the cast-in-place structure. When the structure fails, a 45° diagonal crack develops from the cross-section at the mid-span joint to the connection between the rib slab and the cap, until the concrete protective layer at the joint is crushed, exhibiting a shear failure mode. The bearing capacity of the assembly rib plate type abutment cap connected by the flange plate is basically the same as that of the cast-in-place structure, and the deformation capacity is weaker than that of the cast-in-place rib plate type abutment. The expansion of structural cracks is consistent with that of the rib plate type abutment connected by the cow leg. When the flange plate at the mid span is damaged, the contact surface between the flange plate and the concrete is pried off, resulting in the inability of the structure to continue bearing, exhibiting a shear failure mode. Through numerical simulation, taking the stress performance of the integral cast-in-place ribbed slab abutment as a reference, the assembled ribbed slab abutment connected by the flange plate is basically consistent with the integral cast-in-place ribbed slab abutment in terms of ultimate load, concrete damage, and steel reinforcement skeleton stress, and the connection device has not yet reached the yield state. The ultimate displacement is slightly weaker than that of the integral cast-in-place ribbed slab abutment. By comparison, it can be seen that the ultimate bearing capacity of the assembled ribbed slab abutment connected by the flange is basically the same as that of the cast-in-place ribbed slab abutment, and the stress performance can reach an "equivalent cast-in-place", making it the preferred solution for the assembled abutment structure. The finite element parameter analysis of the flanged ARBA revealed that the thickness of the stiffening ribs, the number of bolts, and length of the flange plate anchoring steel plate were proportional to the ultimate load-bearing capacity of the prefabricated ARBA. In the case of no change in the structural damage mode, considering the economic benefits and load-bearing capacity of the structure, the following parameter combinations of the flanged ARBA are recommended: a thickness of 30 mm of the stiffening ribs, the number of bolts is 12, and a length of 50 cm of the length of flange plate anchoring steel plate. Undertakings in underground mining are often complicated, particularly in situations where geotechnical conditions are not favorable. This study investigates the collapse of tunnels at the Lega-Dembi gold mine in Southern Ethiopia, an area characterized by weak talc formations. The persistent deformation of tunnels poses a threat to the safety of workers and mining operations. In this study, a numerical method that combines continuum and discontinuum approaches is employed to analyze tunnel failures. Additionally, the study evaluates the effect of geotechnical parameters on tunnel deformation, considering various support systems. The results indicate that a combination of rock bolts and shotcrete is effective in mitigating tunnel deformation. Furthermore, the study identifies the geological strength index and unconfined compressive strength as the most influential parameters on tunnel deformation. The subject of the paper is the modelling of multi-bolted connections that are at the pretensioning stage. Taking a systematic approach to the modelling issue, the connection was treated as a composite of four subsystems: a bolt set, a pair of joined elements and a contact layer between them. The first part of the paper describes experimental studies to determine the contact stiffness of a pair of elements separated from an exemplary asymmetric multi-bolted connection. The normal loading and unloading direction of the contact joint was considered. The tests were performed with the use of an INSTRON 8850 servo-hydraulic testing machine equipped with an extensometer. A normal stiffness characteristic in the form of an exponential function was proposed for the tested contact joint. Confining stresses serve as a pivotal determinant in shaping the behavior of grouted rock bolts. Nonetheless, prior investigations have oversimplified the three-dimensional stress state, primarily assuming hydrostatic stress conditions. Under these conditions, it is assumed that the intermediate principal stress (σ2) equals the minimum principal stress (σ3). This assumption overlooks the potential variations in magnitudes of in situ stress conditions along all three directions near an underground opening where a rock bolt is installed. In this study, a series of push tests was meticulously conducted under triaxial conditions. These tests involved applying non-uniform confining stresses (σ2 ≠ σ3) to cubic specimens, aiming to unveil the previously overlooked influence of intermediate principal stresses on the strength properties of rock bolts. The results show that as the confining stresses increase from zero to higher levels, the pre-failure behavior changes from linear to nonlinear forms, resulting in an increase in initial stiffness from 2.08 kN/mm to 32.51 kN/mm. The load-displacement curves further illuminate distinct post-failure behavior at elevated levels of confining stresses, characterized by enhanced stiffness. Notably, the peak load capacity ranged from 27.9 kN to 46.5 kN as confining stresses advanced from σ2 = σ3 = 0 to σ2 = 20 MPa and σ3 = 10 MPa. Additionally, the outcomes highlight an influence of confining stress on the lateral deformation of samples. Lower levels of confinement prompt overall dilation in lateral deformation, while higher confinements maintain a state of shrinkage. Furthermore, diverse failure modes have been identified, intricately tied to the arrangement of confining stresses. Lower confinements tend to induce a splitting mode of failure, whereas higher loads bring about a shift towards a pure interfacial shear-off and shear-crushed failure mechanism.

Confinement of rock bolts by the surrounding rock formation has long been recognized as a positive contributor to the pull-out behavior, yet only a few experimental works and analytical models have been reported, most of which are based on the global rock bolt response evaluated in pull-out tests. This paper presents a laboratory experimental setup aiming to capture the rock formation effect, while using distributed fiber optic sensing to quantify the effect of the confinement and the reinforcement pull-out behavior on a more local level. It is shown that the behavior along the sample itself varies, with certain points exhibiting stress drops with crack formation. Some edge effects related to the kinematic freedom of the grout to dilate are also observed. Regardless, it was found that the mid-level response is quite similar to the average response along the sample. The ability to characterize the variation of the response along the sample is one of the many advantages high-resolution fiber optic sensing allows in such investigations. The paper also offers a plasticity-based hardening load transfer function, representing a ''slice'' of the anchor. The paper describes in detail the development of the model and the calibration/determination of its parameters. The suggested model captures well the coupled behavior in which the pull-out process leads to an increase in the confining stress due to dilative behavior.

Rock slopes are usually reinforced by a number of rock bolts due to the high efficiency and low price. However, where should the rock bolts be installed is still a troublesome issue. For anti-dip bedding rock slopes (ABRSs), the installation position of rock bolts is a controlling factor that determines the reinforcement effect. In this work, a theoretical method is firstly proposed for assessing the stability of ABRSs reinforced by rock bolts using a limit equilibrium model. A comparison of theoretical calculations and numerical results was conducted to test the correctness of the theoretical method. Based on the stability assessment of ABRSs, we introduce adaptive moment estimation method (Adam) to optimize the installation location of rock bolts. Using Adam optimizer, the optimal layout of rock bolts with the maximum factor of safety can be determined, and the factor of safety of the slope increases by about 25% using the same amount of rock bolts but with different installation locations. The proposed method enables the fast stability analysis and supporting design for reinforced ABRSs, which paves the way to smart supporting design of slopes.

The 3D morphology of the joint surface significantly influences the shear behavior of the jointrock. Constant normal load (CNL) direct shear tests with different shear displacement were conducted to understand the shear stress changing with joint roughness and damage degree during shear. The rough joint specimens were prepared using 3D scanning and printing techniques, and shear tests with different normal stresses and shear displacements were performed. Four different parameters and the damaged area quantitatively described by the image binarization and box dimension were calculated and compared to study the roughness evolution of joint surfaces. The experimental results demonstrated that the roughness parameter and shear stress decrease and approach constant values with increasing shear displacement. A JRC degradation model was presented based on regression analyses to evaluate the JRC values of rock joints under various displacements to replace it in the JRC–JCS model. Additionally, a new postshear behavior modeling was proposed for rock joints based on surface degradation characteristics under various initial joint roughness coefficients (JRC0) and normal stress. The stress–displacement curves resulting from the proposed modified model work well in predicting the postpeak stress–displacement curve, which can prove the effectiveness of the postpeak shear behavior modeling.
