Abstract The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) has garnered attention for its important role in shaping surface air temperature (SAT) patterns over Eurasia. While Eurasian winter SAT was traditionally attributed to changes in large-scale atmospheric circulations associated with the AMO, a careful examination of the latest unforced CMIP6 simulations in this study unveils a significant contribution of the AMO’s thermodynamic effects. Specifically, the heat released from the North Atlantic Ocean and transported to northern Eurasia through westerlies takes precedence over the effect of dynamic Rossby waves, resulting in warm (cold) phases during positive (negative) AMO cycles, along with increased (decreased) warm extremes and reduced (enhanced) cold extremes. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the dominating mechanism of the AMO’s impact on Eurasian SAT.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are extreme sea surface temperature (SST) events in all ocean basins, with far-reaching impacts on marine ecosystems and socio-economy. The leading patterns, trend, and interannual variability of summer MHWs in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) are investigated in this study. The first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of frequency of MHWs exhibits a monopole pattern over the entire basin. This mode is highly associated with the concurrent Indian Ocean Basin warming, indicating a remarkable trend over the past four decades. The linear trend in MHW properties largely relates to increased summer Indian Ocean mean SST. The second EOF mode exhibits a zonal dipole with the MHW numbers increasing in the west and decreasing in the east. On the interannual timescale, the first two EOF modes are remotely affected by antecedent and concurrent El Niño events, respectively. The ocean mixed layer budget is utilized for examining the formation of different summer MHW patterns. During the preceding spring, the surface heat flux is important for the development of MHWs, while the ocean advections play a secondary role in the South Indian Ocean for the MHW monopole. Once the SST anomaly rises in summer, the ocean advections play a dominant role in maintaining the SST. Last, we assess the prediction skill of summer TIO MHWs by performing a bilinear seasonal statistical prediction model. Our results suggest the frequency of summer MHWs in the TIO could be predicted one season in advance. This study has great implications for understanding and predicting ocean extreme events in the TIO.

Abstract Multidecadal sea surface temperature (SST) variations in the tropical western Pacific (TWP) have been attributed to nonlinear external forcing and remote influences from the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV). However, the AMV resulted from both internal variability (IV) and external forcing. Thus, the origins of the TWP SST variations are not well understood. By analyzing observations and model simulations, we show that more than half of the decadal to multidecadal SST variations in TWP during 1920–2020 resulted from external forcing with the forced component correlated with AMV, while the internal component is unrelated to AMV. Furthermore, about 43%–49% of the forced AMV‐like SST variations in TWP result from remote influences of the forced AMV in the Atlantic via atmospheric teleconnection over the North Pacific, with the rest from other remote or local processes.

Abstract Soil moisture–atmosphere coupling (SA) amplifies greenhouse gas-driven global warming via changes in surface heat balance. The Scenario Model Intercomparison Project projects an acceleration in SA-driven warming due to the ‘warmer climate – drier soil’ feedback, which continuously warms the globe and thereby exerts an acceleration effect on global warming. The projection shows that SA-driven warming exceeds 0.5 °C over extratropical landmasses by the end of the 21st Century. The likelihood of extreme high temperatures will additionally increase by about 10% over the entire globe (excluding Antarctica) and more than 30% over large parts of North America and Europe under the high-emission scenario. This demonstrates the high sensitivity of SA to climate change, in which SA can exceed the natural range of climate variability and play a non-linear warming component role on the globe.

Abstract The weather conditions of the summer of 2022 were very unusual, particularly in Eastern Asia, Europe, and North America. The devasting impact of climate change has come to our attention, with much hotter and drier conditions, and with more frequent and intense flooding events. Some extreme events have reached a dangerous level, increasingly threatening human lives. The interconnected risks caused by these extreme disaster events are triggering a chain effect, forcing us to respond to these crises through changes in our living environment, which affect the atmosphere, the biosphere, the economy including the availability of energy, our cities, and our global society. Moreover, we have to confront the abnormal consequences of untypical, rapid changes of extreme events and fast switches between extreme states, such as from severe drought to devastating flooding. Recognizing this new situation, it is crucial to improve the adaptation capacity of our societies in order to reduce the risks associated with climate change, and to develop smarter strategies for climate governance. High-quality development must be science-based, balanced, safe, sustainable, and climate-resilient, supported by the collaborative governance of climate mitigation and adaptation. This article provides some recommendations and suggestions for resilience building and collaborative governance with respect to climate adaptation in response to a new planetary state that is characterized by more frequent and severe extreme weather events.

Abstract Compared to interannual and interdecadal variations, inadequate attention has been given to intraseasonal changes in the summer northwest Pacific subtropical high (NWPSH). During 1981–2005, the north Indian Ocean (NIO) and NWPSH exhibit significant relationships from June to August, while the influences of the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation 1 (BSISO1) in June and August differ from its impacts in July, resulting in a significant correlation between the NWPSH in June and August. The models capture NIO's roles but underestimate BSISO1's influences, leading to an underestimation (overestimation) of the relationship between NWPSH in June and August (adjacent two months). A dynamical‐statistical approach based on the close relationship between June and August NWPSH is proposed to improve models' prediction capabilities. Improved results show the mean correlation coefficients (root mean square errors) between prediction and observation for August precipitation and geopotential height increase by 57% and 21% (decrease by 0.27 mm/day and 1.61 m).

Abstract Knowledge of the chemical characteristics and sources of organic aerosols (OA) over marine is needed for evaluating their effects on climate change and air quality. Here, a quadrupole aerosol chemical speciation monitor (Q-ACSM) and a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS) were synchronously employed to investigate the chemical composition, mixing state, and oxidation degree of oxidized organic aerosols (OOA) in PM1 over the East China Sea (ECS) from 3 to 27 June 2017. Both aerosol mass spectrometers demonstrated that a higher oxidation state of OOA in aerosol particles could be generated during marine air mass-dominated periods (MDP) than that generated during land air mass-dominated periods (LDP). Two OOA factors including semi-volatile oxidized organic aerosol (SV-OOA) and low-volatility oxidized organic aerosol (LV-OOA) were distinguished based on Q-ACSM. Fifty-seven percent of the total detected particles with obvious signals of organic markers were identified as oxidized organic carbon (OOC) particles via SPAMS and further divided into lower oxidized organic carbon (LOOC) particles and more oxidized organic carbon (MOOC) particles. All OOC-containing particles were clustered into seven particle subgroups. The EC and K subgroups dominated the LOOC and MOOC particles, respectively, during periods controlled by land air masses, indicating that notable OOC formation was influenced by continental sources. OOA with higher oxygen states were found to dominate near ports. This suggested that OOA chemical characteristics over the ESC are seriously affected by continental, ship, and port emissions, which should be synergistically considered in evaluating their effects on solar radiation transfer and cloud processes.

Abstract Trends of precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are characterized by a north‐south dipole pattern, and the role of local mesoscale systems, TP vortices (TPVs), remains ambiguous. This work reports that the north‐south dipole pattern trends in the TPVs‐associated precipitation have experienced an interdecadal shift in the last two decades, that is, increases in northern TP and decreases in southern TP first and then varies opposite trends, which greatly contributes to the similar interdecadal shift in TP precipitation trends. Furthermore, the causes of changes in TPV frequency are explored from the perspective of lower troposphere conditions. We find that the lower‐level winds, that is, zonal winds over the TP and meridional winds across the northwestern TP boundary, are responsible for the regionally different variations in TPV frequency. The variations in Indian Ocean Dipole are suggested to contribute to the changes in lower‐level winds over the TP.

Abstract It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the planet, which is seriously affecting the planetary health including human health. Adapting climate change should not only be a slogan, but requires a united, holistic action and a paradigm shift from crisis response to an ambitious and integrated approach immediately. Recognizing the urgent needs to tackle the risk connection between climate change and One Health, the four key messages and recommendations that with the intent to guide further research and to promote international cooperation to achieve a more climate-resilient world are provided. It has been said, arguably, that causality analysis should pave a promising way to interpretable deep learning and generalization. Incorporation of causality into artificial intelligence algorithms, however, is challenged with its vagueness, nonquantitativeness, computational inefficiency, etc. During the past 18 years, these challenges have been essentially resolved, with the establishment of a rigorous formalism of causality analysis initially motivated from atmospheric predictability. This not only opens a new field in the atmosphere-ocean science, namely, information flow, but also has led to scientific discoveries in other disciplines, such as quantum mechanics, neuroscience, financial economics, etc., through various applications. This note provides a brief review of the decade-long effort, including a list of major theoretical results, a sketch of the causal deep learning framework, and some representative real-world applications pertaining to this journal, such as those on the anthropogenic cause of global warming, the decadal prediction of El Niño Modoki, the forecasting of an extreme drought in China, among others.

Abstract Background Drought stress severely limits maize seedling growth and crop yield. Previous studies have elucidated the mechanisms by which maize acquires drought resistance and contends with water deficiency. However, the link between the physiological and molecular variations among maize cultivars are unknown. Here, physiological and proteomic analyses were conducted to compare the stress responses of two maize cultivars with contrasting drought stress tolerance. Results The physiological analysis showed that the drought-tolerant SD609 maize variety maintains relatively high photochemical efficiency by enhancing its protective cyclic electron flow (CEF) mechanism and antioxidative enzymes activities. Proteomics analysis revealed that 198 and 102 proteins were differentially expressed in SD609 and the drought-sensitive SD902 cultivar, respectively. GO and KEGG enrichments indicated that SD609 upregulated proteins associated with photosynthesis, antioxidants/detoxifying enzymes, molecular chaperones and metabolic enzymes. Upregulation of the proteins related to PSII repair and photoprotection improved photochemical capacity in SD609 subjected to moderate drought stress. In SD902, however, only the molecular chaperones and sucrose synthesis pathways were induced and they failed to protect the impaired photosystem. Further analysis demonstrated that proteins related to the electron transport chain (ETC) and redox homeostasis as well as heat shock proteins (HSPs) may be important in protecting plants from drought stress. Conclusions Our experiments explored the mechanism of drought tolerance and clarified the interconnections between the physiological and proteomic factors contributing to it. In summary, our findings aid in further understanding of the drought tolerance mechanisms in maize.

Abstract The 2014–2015 “Monster”/“Super” El Niño failed to be predicted one year earlier due to the growing importance of a new type of El Niño, El Niño Modoki, which reportedly has much lower forecast skill with the classical models. In this study, we show that, so far as of today, this new El Niño actually can be mostly predicted at a lead time of more than 10 years. This is achieved through tracing the predictability source with an information flow-based causality analysis, which has been rigorously established from first principles during the past 16 years (e.g., Liang in Phys Rev E 94:052201, 2016). We show that the information flowing from the solar activity 45 years ago to the sea surface temperature results in a causal structure resembling the El Niño Modoki mode. Based on this, a multidimensional system is constructed out of the sunspot number series with time delays of 22–50 years. The first 25 principal components are then taken as the predictors to fulfill the prediction, which through causal AI based on the Liang–Kleeman information flow reproduces rather accurately the events thus far 12 years in advance.

Drought is a significant environmental stress factor that adversely affects maize productivity. However, many details regarding the molecular mechanisms of maize against drought are still unclear. In this study, leaf transcriptomics and physiological traits of two maize genotypes with differing drought resistance were analyzed. Transcriptome sequencing identified 8985 and 7305 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in SD902 and SD609, respectively. Functional analysis suggested that numerous genes are highly involved in oxidative defense, protein modification, photosynthesis, phytohormone response, MAPK signaling, and transcription factors (TFs). Compared to SD902, SD609 had a higher expression of DEGs related to antioxidant enzymes, photosynthetic electron transport, heat shock proteins, and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) signaling under drought conditions, which might contribute to its tolerance mechanisms to drought. Stress-induced TFs may play a crucial regulatory role in genotypic differences. Moreover, the physiological changes and gene expression abundance determined using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were consistent with the RNA sequencing data. The study results suggest that the higher drought tolerance of SD609 than SD902 can be attributed to stronger stress defense capabilities, IAA signal transduction, and more stable photosynthesis. Our findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of maize against drought stress, and the candidate genes identified may be used in breeding drought-tolerant maize cultivars.

Abstracts Background The SIAMESE (SIM) locus is a cell-cycle kinase inhibitor (CKI) gene that has to date been identified only in plants; it encodes a protein that promotes transformation from mitosis to endoreplication. Members of the SIAMESE-RELATED (SMR) family have similar functions, and some are related to cell-cycle responses and abiotic stresses. However, the functions of SMRs are poorly understood in maize (Zea mays L.). Results In the present study, 12 putative SMRs were identified throughout the entire genome of maize, and these were clustered into six groups together with the SMRs from seven other plant species. Members of the ZmSMR family were divided into four groups according to their protein sequences. Various cis-acting elements in the upstream sequences of ZmSMRs responded to abiotic stresses. Expression analyses revealed that all ZmSMRs were upregulated at 5, 20, 25, and 35 days after pollination. In addition, we found that ZmSMR9/11/12 may have regulated the initiation of endoreplication in endosperm central cells. Additionally, ZmSMR2/10 may have been primarily responsible for the endoreplication regulation of outer endosperm or aleurone cells. The relatively high expression levels of almost all ZmSMRs in the ears and tassels also implied that these genes may function in seed development. The effects of treatments with ABA, heat, cold, salt, and drought on maize seedlings and expression of ZmSMR genes suggested that ZmSMRs were strongly associated with response to abiotic stresses. Conclusion The present study is the first to conduct a genome-wide analysis of members of the ZmSMR family by investigating their locations in chromosomes, identifying regulatory elements in their promoter regions, and examining motifs in their protein sequences. Expression analysis of different endosperm developmental periods, tissues, abiotic stresses, and hormonal treatments suggests that ZmSMR genes may function in endoreplication and regulate the development of reproductive organs. These results may provide valuable information for future studies of the functions of the SMR family in maize.

It is commonly known that exogenously applied melatonin can alleviate the impact of drought stress, but the mechanism used by melatonin to regulate stomatal behavior and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism to increase drought resistance remains elusive. Herein, our aim was to investigate the influence of exogenous melatonin on the regulation of C and N metabolism in maize plants under water deficit. In this study, we analyzed stomatal behavior, the key components of C and N metabolism, and the gene expression and activity of enzymes involved in the C and N metabolism in maize plants. The results showed that the application of melatonin (100 μM) significantly increased maize growth and sustained the opening of stomata, and secondarily increased the photosynthetic capacity in maize. Under drought stress, foliar application of melatonin induced the gene transcription and activities of sucrose phosphate synthetase, ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, and citrate synthase, resulting in the enhancement of sucrose and starch synthesis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. This enhancement in sugar biosynthesis and the TCA cycle might lead to stronger N assimilation. As anticipated, NO3– reduction and NH4+ assimilation were also strengthened after melatonin treatment under drought stress. An increase was observed in some key enzymatic activities and transcription involved in nitrogen metabolism, such as that of nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamate synthase, and glutamine synthetase, in melatonin-treated, drought-stressed maize. Moreover, melatonin attenuated the drought-induced damage by reducing protein degradation and increasing the level of proline. Conclusively, our results indicate that exogenous melatonin enhances drought tolerance in maize via promoting stomatal opening and regulating C and N metabolism and related gene expression.

Climate change is one of the biggest threats to human living and health in the 21st century. Whilst a large number of papers have been published addressing the health impact of climate change, there is a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis in the crosscutting field. This study evaluated the global scientific output of research in the field of climate change and health between 1990 and 2020, based on the Web of Science Core Collection database. Research themes were identified using a social network analysis technique based on author keywords. Research trends were assessed by the change in overall publication number and the percentage of publications in each research theme. Articles were further categorized by the availability of funding and author affiliation to compare the difference between developed and developing countries. Results showed that the research output in the field of climate change and health has increased dramatically in the past 30 years, mainly dominated by researchers in developed countries. The percentage of research receiving funding was found to be the lowest in those published by developing countries only and the highest in those published by the collaboration of developed and developing countries. A total of nine major research themes was identified. Research related to ‘risk assessment and adaptation’, ‘sustainable development’ and ‘infectious diseases’ were relatively underfunded. A significant research trend was observed between 2006 and 2020, with increased attention on research themes related to ‘risk assessment and adaptation’, ‘sustainable development’, ‘extreme events’ and ‘air pollution’, and reduced attention on research themes related to ‘ocean’, ‘infectious disease’ and ‘phenology’. The shift of the research trend was mainly driven by research in developed countries. Suggestions, recommendations and future priorities identified by experts in the field of atmospheric sciences, epidemiology, public health, climate change, environmental sciences, and policy development are also provided to guide future research. It is important to shift our focus from single health aspects to an integrated system (such as One Health framework, which considers environmental health, animal health and human health as a whole), with future research focusing more on the systemic impact of climate change in order to achieve better, more effective and efficient risk governance. More funding should be mobilized to support the research capacity building in developing countries and to support climate change adaptation strategies for sustainable development.

Abstract Meiyu rainfall in June–July of 2020 hit the Yangtze‐Huaihe River basin, and the precipitation at lots of observational stations broke the records, inducing severe disasters there. Tibetan Plateau vortices (TPVs) generated over the Tibetan Plateau are local major rainfall triggers. In previous knowledge, TPVs can affect the rainfall in eastern China, only after emigrating from the Tibetan Plateau. In this work, roles of TPVs in the record Meiyu are revealed, implying that the effects of TPVs may be underestimated previously. Firstly, TPVs dying out over the Tibetan Plateau may be transformed into troughs and continue to move eastward, influencing the rainfall in Yangtze‐Huaihe River basin. Secondly, southwest vortices, the important rainfall producers in China, tend to be generated and maintained when TPVs are located over eastern plateau. The results give extended knowledge on the effects of TPVs, which are beneficial for the rainfall prediction in eastern China.

Summary: Lockdown measures are essential to containing the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but they will slow down economic growth by reducing industrial and commercial activities. However, the benefits of activity control from containing the pandemic have not been examined and assessed. Here we use daily carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reduction in China estimated from statistical data for energy consumption and satellite data for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measured by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) as an indicator for reduced activities consecutive to a lockdown. We perform a correlation analysis to show that a 1% day−1 decrease in the rate of COVID-19 cases is associated with a reduction in daily CO2 emissions of 0.22% ± 0.02% using statistical data for energy consumption relative to emissions without COVID-19, or 0.20% ± 0.02% using satellite data for atmospheric column NO2. We estimate that swift action in China is effective in limiting the number of COVID-19 cases

Abstract Tibetan Plateau vortices (TPVs) are important rainfall triggers in southwestern and eastern China after they move off the plateau. Characteristics of the moving‐off TPVs derived from two gridded data sets, the final operational global analysis data from the Global Forecasting System of National Centers for Environment Prediction (NCEP‐FNL) and the ERA‐interim data from the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts, are evaluated against the Yearbooks of Tibetan Plateau Vortex and Shear Line (YB). Generally, NCEP‐FNL captures more moving‐off TPVs in YB than ERA‐interim does. Both gridded data sets perform the best in capturing the TPVs in YB in May and the worst in July. Zonal propagation distances of TPVs are apparently better revealed in NCEP‐FNL than in ERA‐interim, and the performances of NCEP‐FNL and ERA‐interim in showing the meridional propagation distances and lifespans are similar. Positional deviations of TPVs in NCEP‐FNL and ERA‐interim reveal that both data sets show good skills in presenting the TPVs locations, and NCEP‐FNL generally performs better than ERA‐interim. In both gridded data sets, positional deviations of TPVs are larger before the TPVs move off the plateau than after moving off, and zonal deviations are always larger than meridional deviations. Before the TPVs move off, NCEP‐FNL shows no specific preference for the directions of positional deviations, whereas ERA‐interim tends to present further west TPVs locations relative to those in YB. After the TPVs move off, TPVs in both gridded data sets are always observed to the west and north of the TPVs in YB, which is more significant in ERA‐interim.

We used the APSIM-Maize model to simulate maize potential yield (Yp) and rain-fed yield (Yw) when adaptation options of sowing date and planting density were adopted under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 in the Guanzhong Plain of China. The results showed that Yp would decrease by 10.6–14.9% and 15.0–31.4% under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 for summer maize, and 13.9–19.7% and 18.5–36.3% for spring maize, respectively. The Yw would decrease by 17.1–19.0% and 23.6–41.1% under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 for summer maize, and 20.9–24.5% and 27.8–45.5% for spring maize, respectively. The loss of Yp and Yw could be reduced by 2.6–9.7% and 0–9.9%, respectively, under future climate for summer maize through countermeasures. For spring maize, the loss of Yp was mitigated by 14.0–25.0% and 2.0–21.8% for Yw. The contribution of changing sowing date and plant density on spring maize yield was more than summer maize, and the optimal adaptation options were more effective for spring maize. Additionally, the influences of changing sowing date and planting density on yields become weak as climate changes become more severe. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential of other adaptation measures to cope with climate change in the Guanzhong Plain of China.

Abstract The empirical best linear unbiased prediction (eBLUP) is usually based on the assumption that the residual error variance (REV) is homogenous. This may be unrealistic, and therefore limits the accuracy of genotype evaluations for multi-location trials, where the REV often varies across locations. The objective of this contribution was to investigate the direct implications of the eBLUP with different considerations about REV based on the mixed model for evaluation of genotype simple effects (i.e. genotype effects at individual locations). A series of 14 multi-location trials from a rape-breeding program in the north of China were simultaneously analyzed from 2012 to 2014 using a randomized complete block design at each location. The results showed that the model with heterogeneous REV was more appropriate than the one with homogeneous REV in all of the trials according to model fitting statistics. Whether the REV differences across locations were accounted for in the analysis procedure influenced the variance estimate of related random effects and testing of the variance of genotype-location (G-L) interactions. Ignoring REV differences by use of the eBLUP could result not only in an inflation or deflation of statistical Type I error rates for pair-wise testing but also in an inaccurate ranking of genotype simple effects for these trials. Therefore, it is suggested that in application of the eBLUP for evaluation of genotype simple effects in multi-location trials, the heterogeneity of REV should be accounted for based on mixed model approaches with appropriate variance-covariance structure.

Tibetan Plateau vortices (TPVs) are major rain-producing systems over the Tibetan Plateau. Some TPVs can move off the plateau under certain conditions and impact rainfall over Eastern China. Accordingly, the eastward propagation distances of the TPVs moving off the plateau (EPDs) are closely related to the areas of rainfall associated with TPVs. In this study, the moving-off TPVs during May-August of 1998–2015 are classified into two groups according to their EPDs, and the circulations and heating fields at the times when the TPVs move off the plateau (i.e. moving-off times) are investigated based on reanalysis data. The dynamic and thermodynamic conditions to the east of the Tibetan Plateau are found to significantly impact the EPDs. In the middle and lower troposphere, the zonal ranges of negative geopotential height anomalies to the east of the Tibetan Plateau are in accordance with the EPDs of the TPVs, indicating that anomalous lows play a favourable role in the eastward movement of TPVs. In addition, the anomalous highs to the northeast of the Tibetan Plateau and over Southeastern China also benefit the maintenance of cyclonic circulation to the east of the plateau. Meanwhile, in the upper troposphere, the jet stream over Northeast Asia is beneficial for divergence at 200 hPa. Accordingly, ascending motion associated with the upper-level divergence and lower-level convergence is observed, with the zonal extent corresponding well to the EPDs in the two situations. The atmospheric thermodynamic factors also show a remarkable effect on the EPDs. The TPVs move farther away when the unstable stratification and water vapour convergence extend further eastward. The heating ranges above 500 hPa coincide with the EPDs of TPVs, implying a close relationship between the heating fields and the EPDs. These results benefit prediction on EPDs and further on rainfall to the east of the Tibetan Plateau.

Dust–cloud–surface radiation interactions are a complex nonlinear relation referring to the influences of both atmospheric dust and dust-on-snow on surface albedo. A ‘Tiramisu’ snow event occurred on 1 December 2018, in Urumqi, China, providing an excellent testbed for exploring the comprehensive effect induced by atmospheric dust and those deposited atop fresh snowpack on surface radiation. A detailed analysis indicates that the decrease of snow albedo by 0.17–0.26 (22%–34%) is contributed by the effects both the dust–cloud interactions and dust-on-snow at synoptic scale in this case. In particular, dust well mixed with ice clouds at altitudes of 2.5–5.5 km disrupted the ‘seeder–feeder’ structure of clouds and heterogeneous ice nucleation. Dust-induced changes in the low layer of ice clouds (3.3–5.5 km) under a low temperature of –20 °C resulted in a 31.8% increase in the ice particle radius and 84.6% increase in the ice water path, which acted to indirectly buffer the incident solar radiation reaching the surface. Dust particles deposited on the snow surface further caused snow darkening since the snow albedo was found to decrease by 11.8%–23.3%. These findings underscore the importance of considering the comprehensive effect of dust–cloud–radiation interactions in the future.

Background/Aims: In dairy cows, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) is utilized as precursors of de novo synthesized fatty acids in mammary gland. Ketotic cows are characterized by excessive negative energy balance (NEB), which can further increase the blood BHBA concentration. Sterol regulatory element-binding protein1 (SREBP1) and cell death-inducing DNA fragmentation factor-alpha-like effector α (Cidea) play crucial roles in lipid synthesis. Therefore, we hypothesized that BHBA could stimulate SREBP1/Cidea pathway to increase milk fat synthesis in bovine mammary epithelial cells. Methods: Bovine mammary epithelial cells were treated with different concentrations of BHBA and transfected with adenovirus to silence SREBP1 expression. The effects of BHBA on the lipid synthesis in bovine mammary epithelial cells were investigated. Results: The results showed that BHBA could significantly increase the expression of SREBP1, fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase α (ACC-α), Cidea and diacylglycerol transferase-1 (DGAT-1), as well as the triglycerides (TG) content in bovine mammary epithelial cells. BHBA treatment also increased the transfer of mature SREBP1 to nucleus compared with control group. However, SREBP1 silencing could significantly down-regulate the overexpression of FAS, ACC-α, Cidea and DGAT-1, as well as TG content induced by BHBA. Conclusion: The present data indicate that BHBA can significantly increase TG secretion mediated by SREBP1 in bovine mammary epithelial cells.

Based on the final analyses data (FNL) of the Global Forecasting System of the National Centers for Environment Prediction (NCEP) and the radiosonde data over the Tibetan Plateau, evolutions of two types of the Tibetan Plateau vortices, moving-off the plateau (Type A) and dying-out on the plateau (Type B), are investigated respectively. Compared to Type B vortices, the large-scale circulations associated with Type A vortices show stronger ridge to the north of the plateau and deeper trough near the Bay of Bengal at 500 hPa, and the southwesterly flow from the trough and the northwesterly flow from the ridge converge more intensively to the east of Type A vortices. Meanwhile, at 200 hPa the divergence on the right-hand side of the upper westerly jet is just over the vortices. The convergence at 500 hPa and divergence at 200 hPa provide favourable conditions for the development and eastward motion of the vortices. The diagnoses of the potential vorticity (PV) budgets reveal that in the developing stages of the two types of vortices, the vertical distribution of the atmospheric heat source determines both their intensity and the moving direction. In the decaying stage, the maintenance and eastward movement for Type A vortices mainly depend on the convergence of the strong northwesterly and southwesterly to the east of the vortices. For Type B vortices, the vertical PV flux divergence caused by the ascending motion around the vortices reduces the intensity of the vortices and is unfavourable for their eastward motion.

The endosperm is a major organ of the seed that plays vital roles in determining seed weight and quality. However, genome-wide transcriptome patterns throughout maize endosperm development have not been comprehensively investigated to date. Accordingly, we performed a high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis of the maize endosperm transcriptome at 5, 10, 15 and 20 days after pollination (DAP). We found that more than 11,000 protein-coding genes underwent alternative splicing (AS) events during the four developmental stages studied. These genes were mainly involved in intracellular protein transport, signal transmission, cellular carbohydrate metabolism, cellular lipid metabolism, lipid biosynthesis, protein modification, histone modification, cellular amino acid metabolism, and DNA repair. Additionally, 7,633 genes, including 473 transcription factors (TFs), were differentially expressed among the four developmental stages. The differentially expressed TFs were from 50 families, including the bZIP, WRKY, GeBP and ARF families. Further analysis of the stage-specific TFs showed that binding, nucleus and ligand-dependent nuclear receptor activities might be important at 5 DAP, that immune responses, signalling, binding and lumen development are involved at 10 DAP, that protein metabolic processes and the cytoplasm might be important at 15 DAP, and that the responses to various stimuli are different at 20 DAP compared with the other developmental stages. This RNA-seq analysis provides novel, comprehensive insights into the transcriptome dynamics during early endosperm development in maize.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) pendulum swings back and forth between the El Niño and La Niña phenomena. To monitor the relative phase changes of the ENSO pendulum, 13 clusters are obtained based on the pattern of sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) along the equatorial Pacific. The historical ENSO evolution can be effectively described by the alternation among those clusters. The zonal movement of SSTA loading during the ENSO evolution can also be captured by the changes in the clusters. One scheme was designed to monitor the ENSO pendulum based on those clusters as well the SSTAs in the Niño-3.4 region. When applied in practice to monitor historical ENSO events, including the 1997 El Niño and 2015 El Niño phenomena, the scheme tends be suitable for describing the ENSO pendulum between El Niño and La Niña, and it has the advantage of presenting both the ENSO amplitude and SSTA pattern.

In this paper, we analyze observational and reanalysis data to demonstrate that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) significantly modulates winter Eurasian surface air temperature through its impact on the shape, frequency and persistence of Ural blocking (UB) events that last for 10–20 d. This impact results from changes in mid-high latitude westerly winds over Eurasia associated with the warming in the Barents–Kara Seas (BKS) through the AMO-driven high sea surface temperature and sea-ice decline and resultant weakening in meridional temperature gradients. The BKS warming has a strongest positive correlation with the AMO at a time lag of about 14 years. During the recent positive AMO phase, more persistent northwest–southeast (NW–SE) oriented UB events are favored by weakened westerly winds in Eurasian mid-high latitudes. Through cold atmospheric advection and radiative cooling, such UB events produce a strong, persistent and widespread cooling over Eurasia and enhance BKS warming during 1999–2015. However, the positive AMO phase cannot directly produce the Eurasian cooling if the UB is absent. Thus, we conclude that the recent AMO phase change is a major cause of the recent winter cooling over Eurasia through its impact on BKS temperature and sea ice, which in turn affect the meridional temperature gradient, the westerly winds and the UB events.
