Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of supplementing different doses of a multienzyme (KZP) consisting of carbohydrases and a protease on growth performance, duodenal pH and morphology, and carcass traits in broilers fed diets with increasing reductions in energy. One thousand two hundred one-day-old broiler chicks were allocated to five dietary treatments with eight replicates of 30 birds each: a positive control diet formulated to meet Arbor Acres’ nutritional requirements (PC); a negative control diet reformulated to 80 kcal/kg less than the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) of the PC (NC1); a negative control diet reformulated to 120 kcal/kg less than the AME of the PC (NC2); an NC1 diet supplemented with 300 g/t of KZP (NC1 + KZP300); and an NC2 supplemented with 500 g/t of KZP (NC2 + KZP500). Growth performance was measured throughout the study. At 35 days, 10 birds per treatment were randomly selected and euthanized for a carcass trait evaluation, and samples of the duodenum were collected for morphological examination and pH level determination. The final average body weight and feed conversion ratio were better (p < 0.05) for the broilers in the NC1 + KZP300 group compared to those in NC1, NC2 and NC2 + KZP500 groups and were similar to those of the PC birds (p > 0.05). Birds from the NC1 + KZP500 group showed a better (p < 0.05) final body weight and feed efficiency compared to the NC1 and NC2 groups. The villus height was greater (p < 0.05) for the PC and NC1 + KZP300 groups compared to the rest of the treatments. The crypt depth was longer (p < 0.05) for the NC1 and NC2 groups compared to the NC1 + KZP300 group. The supplementation of KZP to both the NC1 and NC2 diets reduced (p < 0.05) the abdominal fat %. This study demonstrates that supplementing energy-reduced diets with KZP improved performance in broiler chickens.

Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext, Tyrosinemia type 1 (TT1) and phenylketonuria (PKU) are both inborn errors of phenylalanine-tyrosine metabolism. Neurocognitive and behavioral outcomes have always featured in PKU research but received less attention in TT1 research. This study aimed to investigate and compare neurocognitive, behavioral, and social outcomes of treated TT1 and PKU patients. We included 33 TT1 patients (mean age 11.24 years; 16 male), 31 PKU patients (mean age 10.84; 14 male), and 58 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (mean age 10.82 years; 29 male). IQ (Wechsler-subtests), executive functioning (the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning), mental health (the Achenbach-scales), and social functioning (the Social Skills Rating System) were assessed. Results of TT1 patients, PKU patients, and healthy controls were compared using Kruskal-Wallis tests with post-hoc Mann-Whitney U tests. TT1 patients showed a lower IQ and poorer executive functioning, mental health, and social functioning compared to healthy controls and PKU patients. PKU patients did not differ from healthy controls regarding these outcome measures. Relatively poor outcomes for TT1 patients were particularly evident for verbal IQ, BRIEF dimensions "working memory", "plan and organize" and "monitor", ASEBA dimensions "social problems" and "attention problems", and for the SSRS "assertiveness" scale (all p values <0.001). To conclude, TT1 patients showed cognitive impairments on all domains studied, and appeared to be significantly more affected than PKU patients. More attention should be paid to investigating and monitoring neurocognitive outcome in TT1 and research should focus on explaining the underlying pathophysiological mechanism.

Abstract

Aims: \ud Hypertensive disorders occur in women with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). How often hypertensive disorders co-exist, and to what extent they impact outcomes, is less clear. We describe differences in phenotype and outcomes in women with PPCM with and without hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.\ud \ud Methods: \ud The European Society of Cardiology PPCM Registry enrolled women with PPCM from 2012-2018. Three groups were examined: 1) women without hypertension (‘PPCM-noHTN’); 2) women with hypertension but without pre-eclampsia (‘PPCM-HTN’); 3) women with pre-eclampsia (‘PPCM-PE’). Maternal (6-month) and neonatal outcomes were compared.\ud \ud Results: \ud Of 735 women included, 452 (61.5%) had PPCM-noHTN, 99 (13.5%) had PPCM-HTN and 184 (25.0%) had PPCM-PE. Abstract

Background: Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) has been touted as the standard procedure fortreatment of acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction; it can be performed through a cutaneousincision referred to as external DCR, or via a transnasal approach. Intubation with silicone tubes hasbeen widely used in lacrimal duct surgery. Objective: Toevaluate the role of silicon tube intubation inthe clinical outcomes of external and endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy in nasolacrimal ductobstruction in adults. Patients and Methods: This is a prospective, randomized; comparative studyincluded 80 cases of 74 patients who were diagnosed with postsaccal obstruction of the lacrimalpathway. The studied sample was randomly grouped into two main groups (n=40), group (I)undergoneexternal dacryocystorhinostomy (EX_DCR) and group (I) undergoneendonasaldacryocystorhinostomy (EN_DCR), then each group was subdivided into two subgroups (n=20)according to with or without silicon tube intubation. From all patients, full history was taken andthey received a complete ophthalmologic examination, ENT and systemic assessment. Afterundergoing the surgical procedure, patients were followed up at1stpostoperative day, 1week, 1, 3 &6 months, complications and outcome were assessed. Results: The overall success rate in externalDCR was 82.5% (33 cases), however, the overall success rate in endonasal DCR was 77.5% (31cases) with no significant difference between groups. The success rate was 85% for external DCRwith intubation, 80% for external DCR without intubation, 80% forendonasal DCR with intubation andwas 75% for endonasal DCR without intubation, with non significant differences among thesesubgroups (P=0.89). The results showed that DCRs without intubation recorded significantly loweroperative time compared to with indubation DCRs. Conclusion: The results of endoscopic andexternal DCR with silicone intubation were comparable to these result without intubation with nonsignificant differences. Using of silicone tube has no significant beneficial effect in the surgicalsuccess of primary DCR, while, it is associated with increasing cost, operative time and complicationrate, there is no need for its routine use. Further studies with larger sample size are warranted.

Abstract

Neoproterozoic iron formations are exposed in the Wadi Hamama area (Egypt) in the northwestern part of the Arabian–Nubian Shield. Mafic and felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of an intra-oceanic island-arc setting host multiple, thin iron-formation units. Major element compositions of the iron formation confirm a low detrital input, whereas the rare-earth elements and Y data suggest deposition related to an influx of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids. Unlike most Neoproterozoic banded iron formations, but similar to other iron-formation occurrences from the Arabian–Nubian Shield, the Nd isotopic compositions of the Wadi Hamama iron formations are predominantly mantle-like. SIMS U–Pb zircon ages of the host volcaniclastic units indicate that the age of iron-formation deposition is ca. 695 Ma, which is within the Sturtian epoch that is presumed to be a glacial event of global extent. Nevertheless, there is no robust evidence of any influence of Sturtian glaciation in the Arabian–Nubian Shield. Our results rather suggest that the iron formations in the area may have formed as low-temperature exhalites on the floor of an island-arc basin. The iron formations were deposited during periods of volcanic quiescence, with metals having been derived during low-temperature pervasive hydrothermal alteration of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks exposed at the seafloor–seawater interface. Precipitation took place due to mixing of metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and cold, oxygenated seawater. There is no need to invoke possible effects of global glaciation to explain the origin of the Sturtian-aged iron formations in the shield. Our study thus suggests that not all Neoproterozoic iron formations are necessarily linked to glacial events as the Hamama deposit represents a non-Rapitan exhalative iron formation.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a virus originated from Corona Virus which can severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) symptoms such as chest pain, dry cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. The AC and ventilation system is not only important for the thermal comfort occupants but to ensure the room is safe and free from infectious virus. Thermal comfort is important measurement in indoor space which influenced by temperature, Relative Humidity (RH), airflow velocity and others. This research was executed and focused on lecture room in Bilik Persatuan 10, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) instead of real hospital waiting room. It comes with the room dimensions 11.87m (Length) × 5.17m (Width) × 2.93m (Height) for the numerical study. In addition, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is used to investigate the air flow pattern and temperature distribution inside the room. By using software Ansys FLUENT 19, field experimental and simulation work can be compared which have 14.55% difference in temperature distribution. It is expected by increasing the air velocity of the AC inlet diffuser influence the pattern of airflow in the room, but average temperature remains same for all these conditions.

Abstract

A new solid nanoparticle sorbent (SnO2 / AC) could serve as high surface area and inexpensive nanocatalyst was prepared. Many properties were characterized by SEM and UV spectroscopy. High surface area, large micro pore volume and total pore volume were found to be 571 m² g-1, 0.4785 cm³ g-1 and 0.7267 cm³ g-1 respectively even with very high loaded ratio (60 %) of tin dioxide to Activated Carbon (SnO2 / AC). Taguchi factorial design method was used to get the maximum MB dye adsorption on the surface of SnO2 / AC nanoparticle sorbent. Contact time (60 min), initial dye concentration (5 mM) and solution temperature (293 K) were found to be the best conditions for the more effective absorption process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The current study revealed the effect of some honey bee products viz., pollen, honey, propolis and bee wax and some plant oils on the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Results show that the females produced from the larvae which had fed on bee wax mixed with propolis gave the highest mean of egg, larval, pre-pupal, pupal and development periods which were 7.4 ± 0.40, 34.2 ± 0.66, 6.8 ± 0.86, 13.2 ± 0.66 and 61.1 ± 1.21 days, respectively. The longest mean of pre-oviposition was 3.2 ± 0.37 days, and the shortest means of oviposition and post-oviposition period was 4.4 ± 0.51and 1.0 ± 0.0 days, respectively. The shortest means of male and female longevity were 9.8 ± 0.49 and 8.4 ± 0.75 days, respectively. While the lowest means of the weight of each larva and pupa were 105.2 ± 5.47 and 71.0 ± 2.43 mg, respectively. Also, results show the effect of clove, garlic and rosemary oils on larval mortality of G. mellonella. The highest mean percentage of larval mortality was for clove oil (68.33 ± 3.33%), followed by garlic oil, 51.66 ± 1.66. The lowest mean percentage of larval mortality was for rosemary oil (38.66 ± 4.41%) at a concentration of 3% after 7 days of treatment, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of a 3D porous Pennisetum purpureum (PP)/polylactic acid (PLA) based scaffold were investigated. In this study, a scaffold containing P. purpureum and PLA was produced using the solvent casting and particulate leaching method. P. purpureum fibre, also locally known as Napier grass, is composed of 46% cellulose, 34% hemicellulose, and 20% lignin. PLA composites with various P. purpureum contents (10%, 20%, and 30%) were prepared and subsequently characterised. The morphologies, structures and thermal behaviours of the prepared composite scaffolds were characterised using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphology was studied using FESEM; the scaffold possessed 70-200μm-sized pores with a high level of interconnectivity. The moisture content and mechanical properties of the developed porous scaffolds were further characterised. The P. purpureum/PLA scaffold had a greater porosity factor (99%) and compression modulus (5.25MPa) than those of the pure PLA scaffold (1.73MPa). From the results, it can be concluded that the properties of the highly porous P. purpureum/PLA scaffold developed in this study can be controlled and optimised. This can be used to facilitate the construction of implantable tissue-engineered cartilage.

Abstract

The South Um Mongul prospect is a Cu-Mo-Au porphyry system. It is covered by porphyritic dacite and hornblende gabbro. Both units are intruded by monzogranite, which encloses xenoliths of both units. Using LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon method, the dacite is dated at ca. 773 ± 6.9 Ma, while the gabbro and the monzogranite are dated at 603 ± 3.5 and 558 ± 4.6 Ma, respectively. The dacite age is consistent with the mid-Cryogenian subduction-related magmatic stage and the gabbro-monzogranite age is comparable to the Ediacaran post-collisional magmatic stage during the evolution of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. The dacite is akin to high-K I-type granitoids and its primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns show negative Nb anomalies and enrichment in LILE (large ion lithophile elements), Th and U over HFSE. These geochemical characteristics are similar to those of felsic magma formed in a subduction-related tectonic setting. The high La/Ybcn (7.2–30.9), Nb/Yb (2.63–4.41) and Th/Yb (2.07–3.04) ratios of the dacite are comparable to continental rather than oceanic arc systems. Its low Sm/Yb ratios (1.84–3.13) support the primitive nature of the crust beneath the continental arc and derivation from a garnet-free lower crustal source. The dacite has low Sr/Y ratios (5–9) and its Eu/Eu⁎ ratios range from 0.66 to 0.83. Similar to dacite, the primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns of the post-collisional suite show a subduction-related geochemical signature. However, the gabbro is characterized by Th/Ta ratios (3.4–14.8), which are comparable with the within-plate tectonic setting. The subduction-related geochemical signature is inherited from long subduction history beneath the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Both the gabbro and monzogranite are characterized by high Ba (404–590 ppm and 936–1590 ppm, respectively) and Sr (611–708 ppm and 624–793 ppm, respectively) contents, which make them analogous to the Caledonian appinite-high Ba-Sr granite assemblage. Abstract

High humidity air flow in Minor Operation Theatre (MOT) is undesired as it will cause discomfort to the occupant. Acceptable humidity air flow is important as it will affect the pureness of the indoor environment as well. The objective of this research work is to construct a realistic Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of MOT for investigation. The MOT which is occupied with one unit of Air Conditioner has been selected for this study. The RH of air is analysed. The experimental data is collected by applying a digital air flow anemometer with USB interface and the channels digital handheld temperature thermometer meter data loggers for validation purpose. CFD simulation is conducted by applying ANSYS Fluent software. The experimental result and simulation is compared and validated. Based on the simulation and experiment findings, it reveals that ANSYS Fluent can be used for RH in MOT.

Abstract

An artery disease of upper extremity is uncommon happened. The most common cause of artery disease in upper extremity is atherosclerosis. In few patients with artery disease, surgical vein bypassing or vein interposition is frequently performed. However, one or more the internal diameters of applied vein graft are blocked or severely norrowed due to the mismatched diameter between existing artery and vein graft. The objective of this study is to investigate the blood flow influence on vein graft with mismatched diameter failure. The 3-D computational fluid dynamic method was employed to determine pulsatile flow velocity, pulsatile pressure gradient, and wall shear stress impact on the mismatched diameter of artery-vein graft model. We expect that pulsatile flow velocity, pulsatile pressure gradient, and wall shear stress impact on mismatched diameter of artery-vein graft model to behave non-hydraulically compared to an ideal matched model.

Abstract

Artery reconstruction in upper extremities is rare performed compare to the incidence of reconstruction in lower extremities. In many cases, primary vascular repair was performed, whenever, otherwise, the interposition vein graft or venous bypass grafting were used in order to alleviate vascular occlusion. However, after grafting technique are applied, one or more of the digital arteries are blocked or severely narrowed because of mismatch of end-to-side or end-to-end reverse saphenous vein graft. The objective of this study was to understand the end-to-end blood flow influence on reverse saphenous vein graft with small diameter. The finite volume method was employed to model the 3-D blood flow pattern to determine the velocity, pressure gradient, flow, wall shear stress, flow resistance and longitudinal impedance (Z L ). We expected that reverse saphenous vein graft behave hydraulically like provide straight graft. Furthermore longitudinal impedance modulus (Z L ) is expected to be inverse proportional to small diameter.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if immune mechanisms in GAD positive patients' contribute to the pathogenesis of a specific sub-type of Type 2 diabetes. GAD positive (n = 8) and GAD negative (n = 8) subjects diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes were matched for age, gender, body mass index, duration of diabetes and glycaemic control. All subjects underwent an insulin-modified frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test to measure insulin sensitivity and insulin secretory function with minimal model analysis. In addition, BRIN-BD11 clonal ß-cells were supplemented with patients' sera to determine basal and alanine-stimulated insulin secretion and terminal complement complex (TCC) formation. Both groups were severely insulin resistant (0.56 ± 0.17 vs. 0.99 ± 0.33 10-4 min-1/(µU ml-1) for GADneg and GADpos, respectively) but the GAD negative subjects had a higher basal (87 ± 11 vs. 58 ± 14 pmol l-1, p < 0.05) and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (?AUCins 0.96 ± 0.12 vs. 0.60 ± 0.12 pmol/(l-1 min), p < 0.05). In vivo measures of insulin secretion were negatively correlated with TCC formation, independent of antibody status. In conclusion, GAD positive subjects initially diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are unable to compensate for insulin resistance due to more pronounced ß-cell impairment. TCC formation may be partly responsible for the insulin secretory dysfunction associated with this specific sub-type of Type 2 diabetes. © 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Exercise enhances insulin-stimulated glucose transport in skeletal muscle through changes in signal transduction and gene expression. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of acute and short-term exercise training on whole-body insulin-mediated glucose disposal and signal transduction along the canonical insulin signalling cascade. A euglycaemic–hyperinsulinaemic clamp, with vastus lateralis skeletal muscle biopsies, was performed at baseline and 16 h after an acute bout of exercise and short-term exercise training (7 days) in obese non-diabetic ( n=7) and obese type 2 diabetic ( n=8) subjects. Insulin-mediated glucose disposal was unchanged following acute exercise in both groups. Short-term exercise training increased insulin-mediated glucose disposal in obese type 2 diabetic ( p<0.05), but not in obese non-diabetic subjects. Insulin activation of (1) IRS1, (2) IRS2, (3) phosphotyrosine-associated phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase activity and (4) the substrate of phosphorylated Akt, AS160, a functional Rab GTPase activating protein important for GLUT4 (now known as solute carrier family 2 [facilitated glucose transporter], member 4 [SLC2A4]) translocation, was unchanged after acute or chronic exercise in either group. GLUT4 protein content was increased in obese type 2 diabetic subjects ( p<0.05), but not in obese non-diabetic subjects following chronic exercise. Exercise training increased whole-body insulin-mediated glucose disposal in obese type 2 diabetic patients.
