We aimed to examine the incidence of four microorganisms, Helicobacter pylori, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, in the antral biopsy specimens of patients with gastroduodenal conditions.Patients and Methods: Patients (67 females, 33 males; mean age = 49.5 years) were initially examined and diagnosed by a gastroenterologist at the Mehrad Hospital, Tehran, Iran. We enrolled those who underwent the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy because of gastroduodenal conditions. Two antral biopsy samples were taken by endoscopy; the first sample was used for the “rapid urease test” to confirm H. pylori. The second was used for DNA extraction and PCR analyses with specific, corresponding primer sets to establish the presence of the four microorganisms. Our study was approved by the Ethics Committee at the Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran. Results: Based on pathology and endoscopy findings, we divided the patients into three groups: 62 presented with gastritis, 18 with duodenal ulcer, and 20 gastric ulcer. The number of patients with P. aeruginosa but without H. pylori significantly differed from the number of those co-infected with both microorganisms (P = 0.03). Additionally, a similar significance was found between the incidence of S. aureus in patients without H. pylori and those with both infections (P = 0.04). Our results indicated that a significant number of patients with gastritis were colonized with P. aeruginosa or S. aureus without being co-infected with H. pylori (P < 0.001). Interestingly, the incidence of colonization by P. aeruginosa of patients without H. pylori (45/49, 91.8%) was higher than that by S. aureus (28/49, 57%).Conclusion: The number of patients without H. pylori but with P. aeruginosa or with S. aureus infection significantly differed from that with both infections, respectively. Our study thus shows that patients without H. pylori infection are prone to be colonized by P. aeruginosa or S. aureus, indicating that targeted antibiotic regimens are necessary for clinically treating them. Keywords: gastritis, Helicobacter pylori, microbiota, PCR, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus

Abnormal protein folding and self-assembly causes over 30 cureless human diseases for which no disease-modifying therapies are available. The common side to all these diseases is formation of aberrant toxic protein oligomers and amyloid fibrils. Both types of assemblies are drug targets, yet each presents major challenges to drug design, discovery, and development. In this review, we focus on two small molecules that inhibit formation of toxic amyloid protein assemblies - the green-tea derivative (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which was identified through a combination of epidemiologic data and a compound library screen, and the molecular tweezer CLR01, whose inhibitory activity was discovered in our group based on rational reasoning, and subsequently confirmed experimentally. Both compounds act in a manner that is not specific to one particular protein and thus are useful against a multitude of amyloidogenic proteins, yet they act via distinct putative mechanisms. CLR01 disrupts protein aggregation through specific binding to lysine residues, whereas the mechanisms underlying the activity of EGCG are only recently beginning to unveil. We discuss current in vitro and, where available, in vivo literature related to EGCG and CLR01's effects on amyloid β-protein, α-synuclein, transthyretin, islet amyloid polypeptide, and calcitonin. We also describe the toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and mechanism of action of each compound. © Versita Sp. z o.o.

Purpose: With increasing the usage of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) for the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease, we aimed to evaluate the side effects of low-dose radiation induced by this technique on blood elements, especially proteins and liver function factors. Materials and Methods: 40 eligible patients (Mean age: 54.62±10.35, 22 female and 18 male), who had referred to the nuclear medicine department for MPI from May till August 2014, were enrolled in the study. A blood sample was taken from each patient just before and 24 hours after the injection of 740Mbq of Tecnetium-99m Methoxy isobutyl isonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) in the rest phase of the MPI in a reference medical laboratory; blood tests included total protein (TP), albumin (Alb), globulin (Glo), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase(ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), direct bilirubin (D.Bili), total bilirubin (T.Bili),serum iron (SI), total iron bounding capacity (TIBC), Albumin globulin ratioA/G ratio), and complete blood count (CBC). Results: Injection of 740Mbq99mTc-MIBI caused a significant increase in serum levels of AST (p= 0.001), ALT (p= 0.001), SI(p= 0.030), TIBC (p= 0.003) and A/G Ratio (p= 0.020). However, following radiotracer injection, a significant decrease was noted in the serum levels of TP (p= 0.002), Alb (p= 0.014), Glo(p= 0.002), ALP(p= 0.001), D.Bili (p= 0.003) and T.Bili(p= 0.000). Conclusion: Due to increased usage of MPI, our data highlights the importance of monitoring the clinical and paraclinical effects of the procedure on vital organs and physiological pathways to reduce their adverse effects.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of varying quantities of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on growth performance and mucosal enzyme activity in Japanese quails at an early age. Using a completely randomized experimental design, 160 one-day-old quail chicks were randomly assigned to 4 experimental treatments and each treatment contained 4 replicate pens of 10 birds. The experimental treatments included T1: control (a basal diet containing 35.2 mg Zn only ), T2, T3, and T4 containing basal diet plus 20, 40, and 60 mg ZnO NPs, respectively. Performance characteristics were recorded weekly. After 21 days, one quail was selected and slaughtered from each experimental cage with a body weight equal to the average body weight of quails in the same experimental cage. After slaughtering and opening the abdominal cavity, a 5 cm sample was taken from the jejunum of the small intestine. The jejunum sample was stored at -80°C until the measurement of alkaline phosphatase, amylase, and lipase enzymes. The results showed that live weight was higher in the T3 and T4 groups than in the control group (P<0.05). The feed conversion ratio was also lower in birds fed with basal diets supplemented with 40 and 60 mg ZnO NPs/kg (T3 and T4, respectively), compared to control treatments (P>0.05). The results showed that amylase and lipase activity increased in the birds fed with 40 and 60 mg ZnO NPs/kg of the basal diet, in comparison to the control treatment; however, they were not significant (P>0.05). The results of this study indicated that the addition of 40 or 60 mg ZnO NPs/kg to the basal diet could be used as a supplement to improve performance traits and enhance mucosal enzyme activity in Japanese quail in the starter stage. Thyroid and gonadotropin hormones play an essential role in the regulation of regulating various physiological functions. The effects of melatonin and zinc (Zn) on these hormones have already been investigated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of melatonin with and without zinc on the levels of gonadotropin hormones and thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)) in female rats. In general, 35 sexually mature female rats were randomly divided into five treatment groups, with each group comprising 7 rats, in a completely randomized design (CRD) during the research. The rats were treated daily with Zn and melatonin via gavage as follows: T1 (control 1, basal diet), T2 (control 2, treatment with normal saline) and the other experimental groups, including T3, T4 and T5, were treated with Zn (40 ppm), melatonin (5 mg/kg) or a combination of Zn and melatonin at the same dose. The administration of the drugs was continued for 20 days (daily) . Plasma samples were then taken for the determination of LH, FFH, LH/FSH, estrogen, progesterone, T3, T4 and TSH levels. The results showed no significant differences in FSH and LH levels between treatments. Estrogen, progesterone and TSH levels were higher in the rats receiving 5 mg melatonin per day than in the other groups, but not statistically significant (P>0.05). However, T3 levels decreased significantly in the group receiving 40 mg/kg Zn compared to the other experiments. (P<0.05). The results showed no significant difference between the treatments in terms of T4 levels (P>0.05). In conclusion, no remarkable changes in other variables were observed in female rats receiving melatonin, Zn or a combination of melatonin and Zn, with the exception of T3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Text mining ,LDA ,COVID-19 - Abstract
Background and Aim: The results from the analysis of COVID-19 literature by employing text-mining techniques are of particular importance for researchers, policymakers, and planners of medical sciences at the national and international levels, avoiding parallel research and waste of time and budget. The paper explore emerging topics and the trend of scientific words at the national and international levels in the subject area of COVID-19. Materials and Methods: This applied research was conducted by employing the text-mining and its related algorithms and classifying texts. The population consists of all COVID-19 articles indexed in PubMed Central® (PMC). The number of records retrieved was 160,862 items until June 10, 2021. Among these, 3143 national and 157,719 international COVID-19 articles. Python and its related libraries were applied. The most significant words were also identified and reported based on TF-IDF weighting. Emerging topics were identified according to the weighted average growth. Results: "COVID", "infect", and "cell" were among the most important words used in international COVID-19 articles. In addition, the most important words in the national COVID-19 articles were "patient", "SARS-Cov", and "COVID". Conclusion:Among the most important conclusions that can be inferred from the trend of word change used in the COVID-19 literature is that the most significant words in international literature differ significantly from those in national literature, as international research focuses on COVID-19 and the infections caused by it. In contrast, national research focuses on COVID-19 and patients. Another significant result is the annual word-changing national and international literature.

Case reports indicate that magnets in smartphones could be a source of electromagnetic interference (EMI) for active implantable medical devices (AIMD), which could lead to device malfunction, compromising patient safety. Recognizing this challenge, we implemented a high-fidelity 3D magnetic field mapping (spatial resolution 1 mm) setup using a three-axis Hall probe and teslameter, controlled by a robot (COSI Measure). With this setup, we examined the stray magnetic field of an iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 12, and MagSafe charger to identify sources of magnetic fields for the accurate risk assessment of potential interferences with AIMDs. Our measurements revealed that the stray fields of the annular array of magnets, the wide-angle camera, and the speaker of the smartphones exceeded the 1 mT limit defined by ISO 14117:2019. Our data-driven safety recommendation is that an iPhone 13 Pro should be kept at least 25 mm away from an AIMD to protect it from unwanted EMI interactions. Our study addresses safety concerns due to potential device–device interactions between smartphones and AIMDs and will help to define data-driven safety guidelines. We encourage vendors of electronic consumer products (ECP) to provide information on the magnetic fields of their products and advocate for the inclusion of smartphones in the risk assessment of EMI with AIMDs.

- Abstract
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical science.

Optical rehabilitation of the patient with aphakia who cannot tolerate contact lenses present a therapeutic challenge. In the absence of capsular support, anterior chamber lenses have been widely used. On the other hand intraocular lens implantation of scleral sutured posterior chamber intraocular lens during penterating keratoplasty or insufficient iris support is recommended. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcome and complication in 17 patients who underwent scleral-fixation of an intraocular lens.We studied prospectively the results of posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation by scleral fixation in 17 eyes of 17 patients without a complete posterior lens capsule support at farabi Eye Hospital. Uncorrected visual acuity improved from counting finger to 20/40 or better in 9 eyes (53 percent). The following complications were observed during the mean postoperative follow-up of 7.2 (range 3-12) months; increased intraocular pressure in 5 eyes, vitreous hemorrhage and icr hyphema in 2 eyes, cystoid macular edema (CME) and vitritis in one eye, and endophthalmitis and retinal detachment in one eye. Posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation by scleral fixation is a relatively safe procedure and can be recommended for many patients

Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in intensive care units (ICU) and is becoming more prevalent globally. As a result, an accurate and timely diagnosis of sepsis is critical for selecting the best treatment to prevent disease progression and mortality. In this study, CRP and TNF-α as common biomarkers of sepsis were detected using a labelfree optical biosensor based on interferometric Fourier transform spectroscopy from a porous silicon substrate. The porous silicon layer was chemically modified with APTES and glutaraldehyde to immobilize the aptamer covalently in order to capture the analyte. The refractive index of the porous layer was determined by analyzing the reflection spectrum from the porous layer, which was associated with different biomarker concentrations. The results demonstrated linear responses in concentrations ranging from 10-10000 ng/ml for CRP and 100-10000 ng/ml for TNF-α and the biosensor's high discrimination. Thus, it has a high potential for advancement in clinical sepsis diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contains fulltext : 218130.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), Polymeric hydrogel-based 3D scaffolds are well-known structures, being used for cultivation and differentiation of stem cells. However, scalable systems that provide a native-like microenvironment with suitable biological and physical properties are still needed. Incorporation of nanomaterials into the polymeric systems is expected to influence the physical properties of the structure but also the stem cells fate. Here, alginate/gelatin hydrogel beads incorporated with mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) (average diameter 80.9+/-10nm) and various surface chemistries were prepared. Human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) were subsequently encapsulated into the alginate/gelatin/silica hydrogels. Incorporation of amine- and carboxyl-functionalized MSNs (A-MSNs and C-MSNs) significantly enhances the stability of the hydrogel beads. In addition, the expression levels of Nanog and OCT4 imply that the incorporation of A-MSNs into the alginate/gelatin beads significantly improves the proliferation and the stemness of encapsulated hASCs. Importantly, our findings show that the presence of A-MSNs slightly suppresses in vivo inflammation. In contrast, the results of marker gene expression analyses indicate that cultivation of hASCs in alginate beads incorporated with C-MSNs (10% w/w) leads to a heterogeneously differentiated population of the cells, i.e., osteocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes, which is not appropriate for both cell culture and differentiation applications.

- Abstract
Background: The selective pressure imparted by intraerythrocytic infection with Plasmodium parasites, the causative agents of malaria has led to many mutations in erythrocytic genes that confer host resistance. Identification and characterization of mutations affecting host resistance to Plasmodium infection enables a deeper understanding of host–pathogen interactions and potentially new ways by which to prevent infection. Methods: Using ENU-induced mutagenesis, and screening for erythrocyte abnormalities and resistance to Plasmodium chabaudi infection, we identified a novel nonsense mutation in the gene encoding porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD) in mice. Results: Heterozygote Pbgd mice exhibited microcytosis and 25% reduction in cellular PBGD activity, but were healthy otherwise. When challenged with blood-stage P. chabaudi, the heterozygotes were significantly protected against infection, showed reduced parasite growth, and had a survival advantage. The mutation did not affect erythrocyte susceptibility to parasite invasion. Instead, the mechanism of underlying resistance to infection involved intraerythrocytic parasite death and reduced propagation of viable parasites. This was not observed when P. falciparum was cultured in erythrocytes from patients with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), who have low PBGD levels or with P. berghei infection in Pbgd deficient mice. Furthermore, the growth capacity of PBGD-null P. falciparum and P. berghei parasites, which grew at the same rate as their wild-type counterparts in normal erythrocytes, was not reduced in the AIP erythrocytes or Pbgd-deficient mice. Conclusions: Our results suggest that PBGD deficiency confers resistance to infection with P. chabaudi during the blood-stage of infection and erythrocytic or parasite PBGD is likely to be dispensable for parasite maturation.

© The Author(s) 2019. - Abstract
The Plasmodium falciparum ATPase PfATP4 is the target of a diverse range of antimalarial compounds, including the clinical drug candidate cipargamin. PfATP4 was originally annotated as a Ca2+ transporter, but recent evidence suggests that it is a Na+ efflux pump, extruding Na+ in exchange for H+ Here we demonstrate that ATP4 proteins belong to a clade of P-type ATPases that are restricted to apicomplexans and their closest relatives. We employed a variety of genetic and physiological approaches to investigate the ATP4 protein of the apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii, TgATP4. We show that TgATP4 is a plasma membrane protein. Knockdown of TgATP4 had no effect on resting pH or Ca2+ but rendered parasites unable to regulate their cytosolic Na+ concentration ([Na+]cyt). PfATP4 inhibitors caused an increase in [Na+]cyt and a cytosolic alkalinization in WT but not TgATP4 knockdown parasites. Parasites in which TgATP4 was knocked down or disrupted exhibited a growth defect, attributable to reduced viability of extracellular parasites. Parasites in which TgATP4 had been disrupted showed reduced virulence in mice. These results provide evidence for ATP4 proteins playing a key conserved role in Na+ regulation in apicomplexan parasites.

To remain competitive and ever increasingly sophisticated in the marketplace, businesses must invest in Information Technology (IT) if they are to survive in the long-term. Advances in IT have enabled new competitors to enter existing markets more readily, which has stimulated and strengthened the paradigm of global competitiveness. At the same time, increasing economic pressures are forcing businesses to re-evaluate their IT operations. In response to the changing business environment and to remain competitive and improve organisational performance some businesses have strategically made considerable investments in IT, yet their benefits are difficult to quantify. With this in mind, this paper aims to study the justification for investment in IT projects, by examining tangible and intangible benefits such as competitive advantage and securing future business by facilitating appropriate management change. A model to determine whether or not to invest in IT for any given company is presented. The developed model is then applied to a case study to analyse the implications of implementing IT and its impact on organisations. Objective: To determine the applicability of urinary caspase 3 enzyme and TNF-α as biomarkers in children with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). Methods: In this study, 31 unilateral UPJO patients and 33 age- and sex-matched healthy childrens were enrolled. The patients with UPJO consisted of 11 female and 20 male children between the ages of 2 to 62 months old. All participants were evaluated regarding anterior-posterior(AP) diameter and cortical thickness of affected kidney by ultrasonography. Technetium DTPA renal scan and voiding cystourethrogram(to assess vesicoureteral reflux) were performed, pre-operatively. Also, urinary levels of TNF-α and caspase 3 enzyme were checked. Follow-ups included measurement of aforementioned indices in patients: AP diameter and cortical thickness of the affected kidney, as well as TNF-α and caspase 3 levels in urine, three and six months after pyeloplasty. Results: The results showed highly significant decrease in urinary TNF-α and caspase 3 enzyme (P values < 0.01), approaching the level measured in children without UPJO after six months. Significant decrease in AP diameter and increase in cortical thickness were also noticed (P values < 0.01). Conclusion: The results of this study strongly support that TNF-α and caspase 3 levels in urine can be used for improvement monitoring in follow-up of UPJO patients after pyeloplasty and can also be potentially used as determining indices for surgical plan but more studies, especially in patients who are not surgical candidates are needed to confirm our observaitons.

Purpose: To report a rare case of a patient with hypoparathyroidism presenting with bilateral disc swelling and near mature cataract as her first clinical manifestationCase report: A 23-year-old woman presented with complaint of worsening vision since one year ago and a history of refractory seizures and headache for several years, being under treatment with Lamotrigine 50 mg/daily. Slit-lamp examination revealed significant cataracts on both sides. Red reflex was dull in the right eye and absent in the left side. The intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement was normal in both eyes (16 mmHg). Her fundus examination revealed disc swelling in her right eye and hazy media that obscured fundus examination due to dense cataract in the left eye. The combination of bilateral disc swelling and dense cataracts raised suspicion to hypoparathyroidism. Subsequently, neuroimaging and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring was requested along with neuro-ophthalmalogy consultation. The diagnosis was Psedotumor Cerebri. Due to increased ICP, she underwent multiple lumber punctures. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed abnormal signal density in basal ganglia suggestive for presence of calcium depositions, making the diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism more probable. Ensuing laboratory result made the definite diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism. Meanwhile the cataract progressed and the visual acuity (VA) decreased to HM in her both eyes. She underwent cataract extraction and PCIOL implantation. Papilledema resolved and the vision restored to 20/20.Conclusion: Ocular complaints happens very rare in the course of hypoparathyroidism but still it seems rational that this occasionally fatal condition be ruled out by hormonal evaluation for cases of unexplained cataracts, particularly if it is accompanied by disc swelling.

Purpose: To assess the safety, efficacy and predictability of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) [Tissue-saving (TS) versus Plano-scan (PS) ablation algorithms] of Technolas 217z excimer laser for correction of myopic astigmatismMethods: In this retrospective study one hundred and seventy eyes of 85 patients (107 eyes (62.9%) with PS and 63 eyes (37.1%) with TS algorithm) were included. TS algorithm was applied for those with central corneal thickness less than 500 µm or estimated residual stromal thickness less than 420 µm. Mitomycin C (MMC) was applied for 120 eyes (70.6%); in case of an ablation depth more than 60 μm and/or astigmatic correction more than one diopter (D). Mean sphere, cylinder, spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were measured preoperatively, and 4 weeks,12 weeks and 24 weeks postoperatively. Results: One, three and six months postoperatively, 60%, 92.9%, 97.5% of eyes had UCVA of 20/20 or better, respectively. Mean preoperative and 1, 3, 6 months postoperative SE were -3.48±1.28 D (-1.00 to -8.75), -0.08±0.62D, -0.02±0.57 and -0.004± 0.29, respectively. And also, 87.6%, 94.1% and 100% were within ±1.0 D of emmetropia and 68.2, 75.3, 95% were within ±0.5 of emmetropia. The safety and efficacy indices were 0.99 and 0.99 at 12 weeks and 1.009 and 0.99 at 24 weeks, respectively. There was no clinically or statistically significant difference between the outcomes of PS or TS algorithms or between those with or without MMC in either group in terms of safety, efficacy, predictability or stability. Dividing the eyes with subjective SE≤4 D and SE≥4 D postoperatively, there was no significant difference between the predictability of the two groups. There was no intra- or postoperative complication. Conclusion: Outcomes of PRK for correction of myopic astigmatism showed great promise with both PS and TS algorithms.

Funding combination is the most important issue for the companies while they know the amount of required capital. Companies should be careful regarding the appliance of financial providing methods compatible with the investment strategy of company and profitability. This study seeks to examine the relationship between the capital structure and the profitability of pharmaceutical companies in Iran. For this purpose, top 30 Iranian pharmaceutical companies defined as study samples and their financial data were gathered for the period of 2001-2010. In this study, the net margin profit and debts to asset ratio were used as indicators of profitability and capital structure, respectively and sales growth was used as a control variable. Results showed that there was significant negative relationship between the profitability and the capital structure which means that the pharmaceutical companies have established a Pecking Order Theory and the internal financing has led to more profitability.

Self-assembly of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) into neurotoxic oligomers and fibrillar aggregates is a key process thought to be the proximal event leading to development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, numerous attempts have been made to develop reagents that disrupt this process and prevent the formation of the toxic oligomers and aggregates. An attractive strategy for developing such reagents is to use peptides derived from Aβ based on the assumption that such peptides would bind to full-length Aβ, interfere with binding of additional full-length molecules, and thereby prevent formation of the toxic species. Guided by this rationale, most of the studies in the last two decades have focused on preventing formation of the core cross-β structure of Aβ amyloid fibrils using β-sheet-breaker peptides derived from the central hydrophobic cluster of Aβ. Though this approach is effective in inhibiting fibril formation, it is generally inefficient in preventing Aβ oligomerization. An alternative approach is to use peptides derived from the C-terminus of Aβ, which mediates both oligomerization and fibrillogenesis. This approach has been explored by several groups, including our own, and led to the discovery of several lead peptides with moderate to high inhibitory activity. Interestingly, the mechanisms of these inhibitory effects have been found to be diverse, and only in a small percentage of cases involved interference with β-sheet formation. Here, we review the strategy of using C-terminal fragments of Aβ as modulators of Aβ assembly and discuss the relevant challenges, therapeutic potential, and mechanisms of action of such fragments.

Background: Acanthamoeba castellanii is the important cause of amoebic keratitis in Iran. The key molecule in pathogenesis of Acanthamoeba keratitis is Mannose Binding Protein (MBP) led to adhesion of amoeba to corneal epithelium. Subsequent to adhesion other cytopathic effects occur. The goal of this study was to identify the molecular characterization of a gene encoding MBP in an Iranian isolate of A.castellanii in order to pave the way for further investigations such as new therapeutic advances or immunization. Methods: A.castellanii was cultured on non nutrient agar. Extraction of DNA was performed by phenol-chloroform method. After designing a pair of primer for the gene encoding MBP, PCR analysis was performed. Finally, the PCR product has been sequenced and the result submitted to the gene data banks. Results: An MBP gene of 1081 nucleotides was sequenced. This fragment contained three introns and encodes a protein with 194 amino acids. Homology search by Blast program showed a significant homology with the MBP gene in gene data banks (96%). Besides, the identity of amino acids with the other MBPs in gene data banks was about 86%. Conclusion: We isolated and sequenced a gene fragment encoding MBP in an Iranian isolate of A.castellanii. Molecular characterization of this important gene is the first step in pursuing researches such as developing better therapeutic agents, immunization of population at risk or even developing a diagnostic tool by PCR techniques.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Probiotics mainly Bacillus species can be advantageous to the host by promoting its intestinal balance. Attempts were made to isolate and identify Bacillus strains from rhizosphere environment. METHODS: The in vitro probiotic criteria were used for screening and characterizing potential Bacillus probiotics. Morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics as well as 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis were utilized for identification of the isolates. Seven isolates were chosen based on withstanding to acidic condition (pH 2.5) and various bile salt concentrations (1-4%(w/v)). RESULTS: Isolates found to have the least antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes PTCC 1163, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 1912 and Bacillus cereus PTCC 1015; however, no activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 25922 was observed. The Bacillus Isolates showed different variation in auto-aggregation features and adhesion to hydrocarbons ranging from 60% to 90% and 10% to 60%, respectively. Excluding isolate 14 that exhibited resistance to penicillin and ampicillin, all the other Bacillus strains were sensitive to the tested antibiotics. All isolates showed relatively low cytotoxic effect on HepG2 cell line except strains 12 and 14. CONCLUSION: Taking together, among the investigated Bacillus isolates, strains 17 and S10 found to be the most promising candidates to fulfill in vitro probiotic specifications.

The importance of business processes and the increasing centrality of IT to an organization's performance have called for a specific focus on business process governance and IT governance in contemporary enterprises. Despite the wide scope of business process management, which covers both business and IT domains, and the profound impact of IT on process innovations, the association between business process governance and IT governance remains under-explored. Analyzing the constituting elements of the two governance concepts, we propose the necessity of alignment between business process and IT governance frameworks to enable business-IT strategic alignment, efficient process and IT requirements specification, and IT-enabled business value realization. We examine the actuality of this alignment in practice through a case study conducted in a relatively mature multinational corporation. The findings indicate the presence of mutual adjustment between business process and IT management functions to support strategic and operational process and IT decision making.

Introduction: With increasing the usage of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) for the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease, we aimed to evaluate the side effects of low-dose radiation induced by this technique on blood elements, especially proteins and liver function factors. Material and Methods: 40 eligible patients (Mean age: 54.62±10.35, 22 female and 18 male), who had referred to the nuclear medicine department for MPI from May till August 2014, were enrolled in the study. A blood sample was taken from each patient just before and 24 hours after the injection of 740Mbq of Tecnetium- 99m Methoxy isobutyl isonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) in the rest phase of the MPI in a reference medical laboratory; blood tests included total protein (TP), albumin (Alb), globulin (Glo), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), direct bilirubin (D.Bili), total bilirubin (T.Bili), serum iron (SI), total iron bounding capacity (TIBC), Albumin globulin ratioA/G ratio), and complete blood count (CBC). Results: Injection of 740Mbq99mTc-MIBI caused a significant increase in serum levels of AST (p= 0.001), ALT (p= 0.001), SI (p= 0.030), TIBC (p= 0.003) and A/G Ratio (p= 0.020). However, following radiotracer injection, a significant decrease was noted in the serum levels of TP (p= 0.002), Alb (p= 0.014), Glo(p= 0.002), ALP (p= 0.001), D.Bili (p= 0.003) and T.Bili (p= 0.000). Conclusion: Due to increased usage of MPI, our data highlights the importance of monitoring the clinical and paraclinical effects of the procedure on vital organs and physiological pathways to reduce their adverse effects. Acanthamoeba keratitis is a vision-threatening infection caused by pathogenic species of the genus Acanthamoeba. In this study, 13 Acanthamoeba keratitis cases were diagnosed among 52 keratitis patients. To confirm the identity of Acanthamoeba at the genus level, a PCR-based method was used, and their pathogenic potential was determined using in vitro cytotoxicity assays on human corneal epithelial cells. Twelve (92.3%) of Acanthamoeba keratitis patients were contact lens wearers; among them eleven (91.7%) wore soft contact lenses. 11/13 (84.6%) isolates were axenised in liquid culture medium, of which 10 (90.9%) isolates disrupted corneal cells. Nine (69.2%) isolates showed Acanthamoeba sp. group II, and four (30.8%) showed group III morphology. To our knowledge this is the first report of determination of Acanthamoeba pathogenicity in Iran. This study confirms the importance of determination of pathogenic potential of Acanthamoeba isolates for clinical purposes.

- Abstract
Inflammation, insoluble protein deposition and neuronal cell loss are important features of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain. S100B is associated with the neuropathological hallmarks of AD where it is thought to play a role in neuritic pathology. S100A8, S100A9 and S100A12 comprise anew group of inflammation-associated proteins that are constitutively expressed by neutrophils and inducible in numerous inflammatory cells. We investigated expression of S100B, S100A8, S100A9 and S100A12 in brain samples from sporadic and familial (PS-1) AD cases and controls using immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. S100B, S100A9 and S100A12, but not S100A8, were consistently associated with the neuropathological hallmarks of AD. Western blot analysis confirmed significant increases in soluble S100A9 in PS-1 AD compared to controls. S100A9 complexes that were resistant to reduction were also evident in brain extracts. A reactive component of a size consistent with hexameric S100A12 was seen in all cases. This study indicates a potential role for pro-inflammatory S100A9 and S100A12 in pathogenesis caused by inflammation and protein complex formation in AD.
