Concerns about the environmental footprint of machine learning are increasing. While studies of energy use and emissions of ML models are a growing subfield, most ML researchers and developers still do not incorporate energy measurement as part of their work practices. While measuring energy is a crucial step towards reducing carbon footprint, it is also not straightforward. This paper introduces the main considerations necessary for making sound use of energy measurement tools and interpreting energy estimates, including the use of at-the-wall versus on-device measurements, sampling strategies and best practices, common sources of error, and proxy measures. It also contains practical tips and real-world scenarios that illustrate how these considerations come into play. It concludes with a call to action for improving the state of the art of measurement methods and standards for facilitating robust comparisons between diverse hardware and software environments., Comment: Released as NREL Tech Report

In this work we explore utilizing LLMs for data augmentation for manufacturing task guidance system. The dataset consists of representative samples of interactions with technicians working in an advanced manufacturing setting. The purpose of this work to explore the task, data augmentation for the supported tasks and evaluating the performance of the existing LLMs. We observe that that task is complex requiring understanding from procedure specification documents, actions and objects sequenced temporally. The dataset consists of 200,000+ question/answer pairs that refer to the spec document and are grounded in narrations and/or video demonstrations. We compared the performance of several popular open-sourced LLMs by developing a baseline using each LLM and then compared the responses in a reference-free setting using LLM-as-a-judge and compared the ratings with crowd-workers whilst validating the ratings with experts.

This study focuses on the validation of high-resolution regional reanalyses to understand their effectiveness in reproducing precipitation patterns over Italy, a climate change hotspot characterized by coastal sea-land interaction and complex orography. Nine reanalysis products were evaluated, with the ECMWF global reanalysis ERA5 serving as a benchmark. These included both European (COSMO-REA6, CERRA) and Italy-specific (BOLAM, MERIDA, MERIDA-HRES, MOLOCH, SPHERA, VHR-REA\_IT) datasets, using different models and parametrizations. The inter-comparison involved determining the effective resolution of daily precipitation fields using wavelet techniques and assessing intense precipitation statistics through frequency distributions. In-situ observations and observational gridded datasets were used to independently validate reanalysis precipitation fields. The capability of reanalyses to depict daily precipitation patterns was assessed, highlighting a maximum radius of precipitation misplacement of about 15 km, with notably lower skills during summer. An overall overestimation of precipitation was identified in the reanalysis climatological fields over the Po Valley and the Alps, whereas multiple products showed an underestimation of precipitations across the North-West coast, the Apennines, and Southern Italy. Finally, a comparison with a time-consistent observational dataset (UniMi/ISAC-CNR) revealed a non-stable deviation from observations in the annual precipitation cumulate of the reanalysis products analyzed. This should be taken into account when interpreting precipitation trends over Italy.

Active inference helps us simulate adaptive behavior and decision-making in biological and artificial agents. Building on our previous work exploring the relationship between active inference, well-being, resilience, and sustainability, we present a computational model of an agent learning sustainable resource management strategies in both static and dynamic environments. The agent's behavior emerges from optimizing its own well-being, represented by prior preferences, subject to beliefs about environmental dynamics. In a static environment, the agent learns to consistently consume resources to satisfy its needs. In a dynamic environment where resources deplete and replenish based on the agent's actions, the agent adapts its behavior to balance immediate needs with long-term resource availability. This demonstrates how active inference can give rise to sustainable and resilient behaviors in the face of changing environmental conditions. We discuss the implications of our model, its limitations, and suggest future directions for integrating more complex agent-environment interactions. In this work we analyze the effectiveness of the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) technique on three benchmark datasets for nonlinear identification, to provide a better understanding of its suitability when tackling real dynamical systems. While SINDy can be an appealing strategy for pursuing physics-based learning, our analysis highlights difficulties in dealing with unobserved states and non-smooth dynamics. Due to the ubiquity of these features in real systems in general, and control applications in particular, we complement our analysis with hands-on approaches to tackle these issues in order to exploit SINDy also in these challenging contexts., Comment: Submitted to IFAC SYSID 2024

Networks of ground stations designed to transmit and receive at optical wavelengths through the atmosphere offer an opportunity to provide on-demand, high-bandwidth, secure communications with spacecraft in Earth orbit and beyond. This work describes the operation and activities of current Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) ground stations in Germany and Australasia. In Germany, FSOC facilities are located at the Oberpfaffenhofen campus of the Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR), the Laser-Bodenstation in Trauen (Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center, DLR), and the Research Center Space of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in Neubiberg. The DLR also operates a ground station in Almeria, Spain as part of the European Optical Nucleus Network. The Australasian Optical Ground Station Network (AOGSN) is a proposed network of 0.5 -- 0.7m class optical telescopes located across Australia and New Zealand. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are the foundation of several new strategies for neural repair and neurological therapies. The fact that a remote force can act on MNPs at the cytoplasmic space constitutes the essence of many new neurotherapeutic concepts. MNPs with a predesigned physicochemical characteristic can interact with external magnetic fields to apply mechanical forces in definite areas of the cell to modulate cellular behaviour. Magnetic actuation to direct the outgrowth on neurons after nerve injury has already demonstrated the therapeutic potential for neural repair. When these magnetic cores are functionalized with molecules such as nerve growth factors or neuroprotective molecules, multifunctional devices can be developed. This chapter will review some of these new nanotechnology-based solutions for neurological diseases, specifically those based on the use of engineered MNPs used for neuroprotection and neuroregeneration. Trajectory design in highly-perturbed environments like binary asteroids is challenging. It typically requires using realistic, non-autonomous dynamical models in which periodic solutions derived in autonomous systems vanish. In this work, Lagrangian descriptors are employed in the perturbed planar bi-elliptic restricted four-body problem to find regions of bounded motion over a finite horizon about Dimorphos, the secondary body of the (65803) Didymos binary system. Results show that Lagrangian descriptors successfully reveal phase space organizing structures both in the unperturbed and perturbed planar bi-elliptic restricted four-body problem. With no solar radiation pressure, regions of bounded motion are visually identified, so granting access to a vast selection of bounded orbits about Dimorphos. Conversely, the presence of solar radiation pressure breaks down the majority of structures, leading to a large region of unstable motion with rare exceptions. Development of task guidance systems for aiding humans in a situated task remains a challenging problem. The role of search (information retrieval) and conversational systems for task guidance has immense potential to help the task performers achieve various goals. However, there are several technical challenges that need to be addressed to deliver such conversational systems, where common supervised approaches fail to deliver the expected results in terms of overall performance, user experience and adaptation to realistic conditions. In this preliminary work we first highlight some of the challenges involved during the development of such systems. We then provide an overview of existing datasets available and highlight their limitations. We finally develop a model-in-the-loop wizard-of-oz based data collection tool and perform a pilot experiment., Comment: SCAI @ SIGIR

Recent temporal action segmentation approaches need frame annotations during training to be effective. These annotations are very expensive and time-consuming to obtain. This limits their performances when only limited annotated data is available. In contrast, we can easily collect a large corpus of in-domain unannotated videos by scavenging through the internet. Thus, this paper proposes an approach for the temporal action segmentation task that can simultaneously leverage knowledge from annotated and unannotated video sequences. Our approach uses multi-stream distillation that repeatedly refines and finally combines their frame predictions. Our model also predicts the action order, which is later used as a temporal constraint while estimating frames labels to counter the lack of supervision for unannotated videos. In the end, our evaluation of the proposed approach on two different datasets demonstrates its capability to achieve comparable performance to the full supervision despite limited annotation.

Short and long-term stabilities of cementless implants are strongly determined by the interfacial load transfer between implants and bone tissue. Stress-shielding effects arise from shear stresses due to the difference of material properties between bone and the implant. It remains difficult to measure the stress field in periprosthetic bone tissue. This study proposes to investigate the dependence of the stress field in periprosthetic bone tissue on i) the implant surface roughness, ii) material properties of bone and of the implant, iii) the bone-implant contact ratio. To do so, a microscale 2-D finite element model of an osseointegrated boneimplant interface was developed where the surface roughness was modeled by a sinusoidal surface. The results show that the isostatic pressure is not affected by the presence of the bone-implant interface while shear stresses arise due to the combined effects of a geometrical singularity (for low surface roughness) and of shear stresses at the bone-implant interface (for high surface roughness). Stress-shielding effects are likely to be more important when the bone-implant contact ratio value is low, which corresponds to a case of relatively low implant stability. Shear stress reach a maximum value at a distance from the interface comprised between 0 and 0.1 time roughness wavelength $\lambda$ and tend to 0 at a distance from the implant surface higher than $\lambda$, independently from bone-implant contact ratio and waviness ratio. A comparison with an analytical model allows validating the numerical results. Current definitions of both squeezing operator and squeezed vacuum state are critically examined on the grounds of consistency with the underlying su(1,1) algebraic structure. Accordingly, the generalized coherent states for su(1,1) in its Schwinger two-photon realization are proposed as squeezed states. The physical implication of this assumption is that two additional degrees of freedom become available for the control of quantum optical systems. The resulting physical predictions are evaluated in terms of quadrature squeezing and photon statistics, while the application to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is discussed to show the emergence of nonclassical regions, characterized by negative values of Mandel's parameter, which cannot be anticipated by the current formulation, and then outline future possible use in quantum technologies.

Investigations over half a century have indicated that mechanical forces induce neurite growth - with neurites elongating at a rate of 0.1-0.3{\mu}mh^{-1} per pico-Newton (pN) of applied force - when mechanical tension exceeds a threshold, with this being identified as 400-1000 pN for neurites of PC12 cells. Here we demonstrate that there is no threshold for neurite elongation of PC12 cells in response to applied mechanical forces. Instead, this proceeds at the same previously identified rate, on the application of tensions with intensity below 1pN. This supports the idea of mechanical tension as an endogenous signal used by neurons for promoting neurite elongation., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

In this paper we present a blind deconvolution scheme based on statistical wavelet estimation. We assume no prior knowledge of the wavelet, and do not select a reflector from the signal. Instead, the wavelet (ultrasound pulse) is statistically estimated from the signal itself by a kurtosis-based metric. This wavelet is then used to deconvolve the RF (radiofrequency) signal through Wiener filtering, and the resultant zero phase trace is subjected to spectral broadening by Autoregressive Spectral Extrapolation (ASE). During the long course of evolution, nature has learnt how to exploit quantum effects. In fact, recent experiments reveal the existence of quantum processes whose coherence extends over unexpectedly long time and space ranges. In particular, photosynthetic processes in light-harvesting complexes display a typical oscillatory dynamics ascribed to quantum coherence. Here, we consider the simple model where a dimer made of two chromophores is strongly coupled with a quasi-resonant vibrational mode. We observe the occurrence of wide oscillations of genuine quantum correlations, between electronic excitations and the environment, represented by vibrational bosonic modes. Such a quantum dynamics has been unveiled through the calculation of the negativity of entanglement and the discord, indicators widely used in quantum information for quantifying the resources needed to realize quantum technologies. We also discuss the possibility of approximating additional weakly-coupled off-resonant vibrational modes, simulating the disturbances induced by the rest of the environment, by a single vibrational mode. Within this approximation, one can show that the off-resonant bath behaves like a classical source of noise.

We explore a variety of reasons for considering su(1,1) instead of the customary h(1) as the natural unifying frame for characterizing boson systems. Resorting to the Lie-Hopf structure of these algebras, that shows how the Bose-Einstein statistics for identical bosons is correctly given in the su(1,1) framework, we prove that quantization of Maxwell's equations leads to su(1,1), relativistic covariance being naturally recognized as an internal symmetry of this dynamical algebra. Moreover su(1,1) rather than h(1) coordinates are associated to circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. Nanoparticles (NPs) engineered for biomedical applications are meant to be in contact with protein-rich physiological fluids. These proteins are usually adsorbed onto the NP surface, forming a swaddling layer called protein corona that influences cell internalization. We present a study on protein adsorption onto different magnetic NPs (MNPs) when immersed in cell culture medium, and how these changes affect the cellular uptake. Two colloids with magnetite cores of 25 nm, same hydrodynamic size and opposite surface charge were in situ coated with (a) positive polyethyleneimine (PEI-MNPs) and (b) negative poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-MNPs). After few minutes of incubation in cell culture medium the wrapping of the MNPs by protein adsorption resulted in a 5-fold size increase. After 24 h of incubation large MNP-protein aggregates with hydrodynamic sizes 1500 to 3000 nm (PAA-MNPs and PEI-MNPs respectively) were observed. Each cluster contained an estimated number of magnetic cores between 450 and 1000, indicating the formation of large aggregates with a "plum pudding" structure of MNPs embedded into a protein network of negative surface charge irrespective of the MNP_core charge. We demonstrated that PEI-MNPs are incorporated in much larger amounts than the PAA-MNPs units. Quantitative analysis showed that SH-SY5Y cells can incorporate 100 per cent of the added PEI-MNPs up to about 100 pg per cell, whereas for PAA-MNPs the uptake was less than 50 percent. The final cellular distribution showed also notable differences regarding partial attachment to the cell membrane. These results highlight the need to characterize the final properties of MNPs after protein adsorption in biological media, and demonstrate the impact of these properties on the internalization mechanisms in neural cells., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures

We present a second-order perturbative analysis of the model describing a two-level trapped ion interacting with a traveling laser field, in the Lamb-Dicke regime. Unlike the customary approach, based on the interaction picture and the rotating wave approximation, we reduce the original Hamiltonian to a time-independent model, unitarily equivalent to a spin-boson model, which features a form well suited to apply the perturbation theory. We determine the first and second-order corrections of eigenstates and eigenvalues. By varying the interaction parameters we identify four regimes characterized by different eigenvalue distributions (possibly including level doublets) and suggest the presence of an intermediate regime where the spectrum undergoes macroscopic changes. In this regime, where the perturbation approach does not hold, our reduced Hamiltonian is shown to reproduce the Jaynes-Cummings model., Comment: 9 pages, to appear on J.Phys. B
