Hybrid concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) plants are gaining relevance because they combine their advantages: easy installation and low cost of PV plus dispatchability of CSP. This paper presents results of a techno-economic modelling of this hybrid approach for sites in Jordan, Tunisia and Algeria. Local boundary conditions such as meteorology, cost and electricity demand have been considered to determine the best configurations for these three sites. Different CSP technologies with thermal energy storage have been selected. Hybridization with natural gas has also been included. The optimization is done towards minimizing the LCOE while covering the electrical demand 24/7. Results are presented for different CO2 emissions ranges, as the use of fossil fuel has a strong impact on the LCOE and for environmental reasons, it may be preferred to be kept to a minimum. For most of the cases analyzed, the fraction of energy from PV that leads to minimum LCOE is lower than the energy from CSP. It is shown that for countries with a high fuel price, the use of natural gas reduces the LCOE until a share from this source of about 20%. A higher integration of fossil fuel for sites rich in solar irradiation is considered not advantageous if the price of natural gas is above EUR 40/MWh.

Solar thermal absorber coatings play an important role in the opto-thermal efficiency of receivers in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP). Two standard figures of merit are the solar absorptance αsol and thermal emittance εth, derived from spectral directional hemispherical reflectance measurements at room temperature. These two figures of merit allow comparing coating formulations in terms of performance and durability. In this study, a black coating and a solar selective coating are optically characterized by different laboratories to compare spectral datasets, solar absorptance αsol and thermal emittance εth calculations. The comparison includes various benchtop spectrophotometers operating in the UV-VIS-NIR and Infrared spectral ranges as well as three commercial portable reflectometers/emissometers. A good agreement is found between the nine parties participating in this intercomparison campaign. The black coating αsol value is 96.6 ± 0.2%, while the solar selective coating αsol value is 94.5 ± 0.4%. For the thermal emittance, spectral data is concatenated and integrated from 0.3 to 16 μm. The black coating εth value calculated at 650 °C is 80.8 ± 3.8%, while the solar selective coating εth value calculated at 650 °C is 25.0 ± 0.5%.

Solar thermal absorber coatings play a key role in the thermal efficiency of receivers for applications in the field of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP). The development of stable spectral selective coatings with a high solar absorptance αsol and a low thermal emittance εth is often desired to reduce thermal losses. However, quantitative indicators describing selectivity and the trade-off between solar absorptance and thermal emittance is seldom discussed in the literature. In this review, relevant opto-thermal figures of merit are analyzed for the comparison of reference solar thermal absorber coatings, including real and ideal coatings, both black and spectral selective. The comparison is made for a temperature ranging from 25 to 1000 °C and for a concentration factor ranging from 20 to 1000, based on spectral data measured at room temperature from 0.25 to 20 μm. New figures of merit are introduced, i.e. a normalized selectivity ratio Si*, a trade-off factor Ztrade-off, a normalized solar reflectance index SRI* and a peak efficiency temperature Tpeak,opt. These metrics are derived from existing figures of merit and adapted for CSP. The set of figures of merit analyzed in this review offer a complementary perspective for the detailed characterization of any coating opto-thermal performance. For solar thermal absorber coatings, thermal efficiency ηthermal and peak efficiency temperature Tpeak,opt are respectively deemed more insightful than opto-thermal efficiency ηopt-th and maximum steady-state temperature TSST,max, when comparing the relative opto-thermal performance of two coating formulations.

Wind loads may decrease a heliostat’s optical performance by affecting its shape and orientation. As small scale wind tunnel or numerical models cannot reflect a heliostat’s dynamic behavior entirely, in this study we investigated a real scale Stellio heliostat installed on the DLR heliostat testing platform where it was exposed to the natural wind. The wind-induced response was captured with a dynamic photogrammetry system that combines a high spatial and high temporal resolution. As its application to a heliostat is novel, the first focus of this paper is to validate the applied setup and the accuracy of measured displacements. The second focus is to discuss the wind-induced Stellio behavior. A method is presented which allows for separating the total wind-induced behavior into a tracking- and a slope-relevant part. Based on this separation, the wind-induced tracking deviation (0.44mradRMS) during the investigated measurement period (mean wind speed ≈ 4.8m/s, mean turbulence intensity ≈ 26%) reached a level of approximately one third of a heliostat’s typical total tracking deviation. Likewise, during the time step of largest deformations, the wind-induced slope deviation (0.75mradRMS) of the most affected facet reached a level of approximately one third of a Stellio facet’s total slope deviation. However, wind-induced slope deviations occurred only locally and temporally. Furthermore, wind-excited eigenfrequencies were revealed to have a negligible impact on both the tracking and slope deviation in case of the Stellio. Oscillations and deformations related to frequencies below the eigenfrequencies were rather found to have a predominant impact on the optical performance.

Large scale central receiver systems typically deploy between thousands to more than a hundred thousand heliostats. During solar operation, each heliostat is aligned individually in such a way that the overall surface normal bisects the angle between the sun’s position and the aim point coordinate on the receiver. Due to various tracking error sources, achieving accurate alignment ≤1 mrad for all the heliostats with respect to the aim points on the receiver without a calibration system can be regarded as unrealistic. Therefore, a calibration system is necessary not only to improve the aiming accuracy for achieving desired flux distributions but also to reduce or eliminate spillage. An overview of current larger-scale central receiver systems (CRS), tracking error sources and the basic requirements of an ideal calibration system is presented. Leading up to the main topic, a description of general and specific terms on the topics heliostat calibration and tracking control clarifies the terminology used in this work. Various figures illustrate the signal flows along various typical components as well as the corresponding monitoring or measuring devices that indicate or measure along the signal (or effect) chain. The numerous calibration systems are described in detail and classified in groups. Two tables allow the juxtaposition of the calibration methods for a better comparison. In an assessment, the advantages and disadvantages of individual calibration methods are presented.

Performance tests of concentrating solar collectors are based on energy balance studies which require accurate measurements of fluid mass flow rate, temperature difference over the collector length and the knowledge of the specific heat capacity of the used heat transfer fluid (HTF). Especially at operation temperatures in the range of 200–400 °C, the accuracy of HTF manufacturer data regarding the specific heat capacity of used HTFs is insufficient. This shortcoming contributes significantly to the overall measurement uncertainty of thermal collector assessments. In the present paper, the measurement results of a flow through calorimeter measuring the specific heat capacity of SYLTHERM 800 under field conditions at temperatures up to 330 °C are presented. The HTF measurement shows good agreement (deviation below 1.2%) with a Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurement for temperatures below 270 °C. For higher temperatures, the deviation between flow through calorimeter and DSC measurement increases to 3.7% at 330 °C. Furthermore, several technical design and measurement improvements over the calorimeter design presented in 2012 are described in detail. A validation measurement using water reveals deviations below 0.1% from the water reference values at ambient temperatures. A stringent uncertainty analysis reveals the largest individual measurement uncertainty. The unexpectedly large uncertainty of the Coriolis mass flow sensors at temperatures above 270 °C is distinguished by a large individual uncertainty and the comparison to DSC.

A clamp-on measurement system for flexible and accurate fluid temperature measurements for turbulent flows with Reynolds numbers higher than 30,000 is presented in this paper. This noninvasive system can be deployed without interference with the fluid flow while delivering the high accuracies necessary for performance and acceptance testing for power plants in terms of measurement accuracy and position. The system is experimentally validated in the fluid flow of a solar thermal parabolic trough collector test bench, equipped with built-in sensors as reference. Its applicability under industrial conditions is demonstrated at the 50 MWel AndaSol-3 parabolic trough solar power plant in Spain. A function based on large experimental data correcting the temperature gradient between the measured clamp-on sensor and actual fluid temperature is developed, achieving an uncertainty below ±0.7 K (2σ) for fluid temperatures up to 400 °C. In addition, the experimental results are used to validate a numerical model. Based on the results of this model, a general dimensionless correction function for a wider range of application scenarios is derived. The clamp-on system, together with the dimensionless correction function, supports numerous combinations of fluids, pipe materials, insulations, geometries, and operation conditions and should be useful in a variety of industrial applications of the power and chemical industry where temporal noninvasive fluid temperature measurement is needed with good accuracy. The comparison of the general dimensionless correction function with measurement data indicates a measurement uncertainty below 1 K (2σ).

Turmkraftwerke weisen einen hohen Wirkungsgrad und große Kostensenkungs-potenziale auf. Zur Bestimmung der Wirkungsgrade und Eintrittsleistung und zur Optimierung des Betriebs dient die Messung der solaren Flussdichteverteilung in der Ebene der Eintrittsapertur des Receivers. Flussdichtemesssysteme nutzen häufig einen diffus reflektierenden Schwenkbalken, der sich vor dem Receiver vorbeibewegt, während eine CCD-Kamera die Helligkeitsverteilung der am Balken reflektierten solaren Strahlung aufnimmt. Anschließend wird das Bild mit Radio-meterwerten kalibriert. An kommerziellen Turmkraftwerken höherer Leistung und entsprechend größerer Apertur sind mechanische Schwenkbalken sehr groß und daher nur bedingt geeignet. Aus diesem Grund werden Messmethoden untersucht, die ohne Schwenkbalken auskommen [1]. Eine Methode kombiniert eine Raytracing-Simulation mit einer vereinfachten Messung im Bereich des Strahlungsschutzes. Die Messung dient dabei zur Validierung der Simulationen. Aus dem Simulationsergebnis lassen sich dann alle wichtigen Größen zur Charakterisierung des Kraftwerkes ableiten. Dieses Poster präsentiert die Anwendung dieser Methode an dem Demonstrationskraftwerk SOLUGAS, einem Cavityrohrreceiver mit Mikrogasturbine [2].

Solar irradiance and ancillary meteorological data are needed for solar resource assessment. Accurate measurements are required for comparison and adjustment of long‐term satellite data. Furthermore, reliable irradiance measurements are needed to validate Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) forecasting methods. Parabolrinnenreceiver zur Umwandlung von konzentrierter Solarstrahlung in Nutzwärme sind Schlüsselkomponenten solarthermischer Kraftwerke. Zur Charakterisierung ihrer typischen thermischen und optischen Eigenschaften wurden im DLR zahlreiche Labor und Feldmessmethoden und Simulationswerkzeuge entwickelt. Anhand einer Ringversuchs.Kampagne mit einem ausgewählten Satz von Receivern werden diese nun erstmals systematisch verglichen.l

Das Projekt Pareso hat zum Ziel, die thermische Qualität von in einem Solarfeld eingebauten Parabolrinnen-Receivern mit hoher Genauigkeit zu bestimmen

Wärmeverluste, welche an Receiverneines solarthermischen Parabolrinnen-Kraftwerks auftreten, haben signifikanten Einfluss auf den Kraftwersertrag. Bislang konnten Receiver nur in ausgebautem Zustand im Labor vermessen werden. Das Ziel des Projekts ist, die Wärmeverluste von in einem Solarfeld eingebauten Receivern mit hoher Genauigkeit quantitativ bestimmen zu können. Hierzu ist ein Messverfahren entwickelt worden, dass auf transienter Infrarot-Thermographie beruht. Mit dem entwickelten Verfahren können thermische Verluste im Feld quantitative mit einer Unischerheit kleiner als als 20 W/m im eingebauten Zustand bestimmt werden. Zusätzlich können die Verlustmechanismen (d.h. die Qualität der selektiven Beschichtung und des Ringspaltvakuums) eingegrenzt werden. Das Prinzip des Messverfahrens ist im Labor und im Feld validiert. Das Verfahren ergänzt durch seine Genauigkeit und Detailtiefe komplementär qualitative Screening-Methoden mit Infrarotkameras.

Solarthermischen Kraftwerke wandeln im Gegensatz zur Photovoltaik die Energie des Sonnenlichts über Wärme in Elektrizität um. Zur Erzeugung eines ausreichenden Temperaturniveaus wird das Sonnenlicht durch der Sonne nachgeführte Spiegel auf einen Strahlungsempfänger („Receiver“) konzentriert, welcher die Strahlungsenergie auf ein Wärmeübertragungsmedium überträgt. Diese Wärmeenergie kann dann entweder für spätere Zeiten gespeichert werden, oder direkt an einen konventionellen Kraftwerksprozess zur Produktion von Elektrizität oder solarer Brennstoffe weitergegeben werden. Im Bereich eines solarthermischen Kraftwerks gibt es eine ganze Reihe von Mess- und Regelgrößen, in denen verschiedenste Messtechniken und Sensoren gefragt sind. Dieser Beitrag gliedert sich in optische, mechanische, thermische, strömungstechnische Messaufgaben und Messaufgaben der Umgebungsbedingungen. Er kann dieses umfangreiche Thema nur exemplarisch behandeln. Messtechniken und Sensoren für den F&E-Einsatz dürfen durchaus etwas teuerer und komplexer sein, da sie nur selten und wenn, dann von Experten angewendet werden, während Sensoren, die in großer Anzahl bei der Herstellung von Komponenten wie Spiegeln oder Receivern zum Einsatz kommen, oder gar den Betrieb von Kraftwerken überwachen neben anderen Anforderungen preisgünstig, einfach in der Anwendung und stabil sein sollten.

Es werden im DLR entwickelte Messmethoden vorgestellt, die der Qualifizierung von Heliostatfeldern dienen. Anwendungsbeispiel ist das Solarthermische Versuchskraftwerk Jülich. Des Weiteren werden Verwendungsmöglichkeiten der gewonnenen Daten (bspw. für Simulationen im Rahmen von Auslegungen und Betriebsbegleitung) aufgezeigt.

Flux density measurement on external receivers is an important parameter for supervision and control of commercial and research solar tower power plants. This article presents a flux density measurement system developed for open volumetric receivers that can be adapted to other receiver systems. Affordable video camera technique is used and advanced corrections are applied. Main focus is put on the challenge caused by not perfectly diffuse reflecting receiver surfaces and correction of this effect to achieve reliable measurement data. For this task the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of the used absorber material has been determined and employed. The system has been developed and tested by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the Plataforma Solar de Almería and the Solar Tower Jülich.

Commercial solar tower plants have much larger aperture surfaces than the receiver prototypes tested in earlier R&D projects. Existing methods to measure the solar flux density in the receiver aperture face new challenges regarding the receiver size. Also, the requirements regarding costs, accuracy, spatial resolution, and measuring speed are different. Flux density measurement delivers the spatial distribution of the concentrated solar radiation on a receiver aperture, measures receiver input power, and monitors and might control heliostat aimpoints. This paper resumes existent concepts, presents new ones and evaluates them against a catalogue of requirements. Direct and indirect moving bar techniques offer high measurement accuracy, but also have the disadvantage of large moving parts on a solar tower. In the case of external receivers, measuring directly on receiver surfaces avoids moving parts and allows continuous measurement, but is not as precise. This promising technique requires, due to specific reflectance properties of current receiver materials, proper scientific evaluation. Measurement-supported simulation techniques can also be applied to cavity receivers without installing moving parts. They have reasonable uncertainties under ideal conditions and require comparatively low effort.

Digital close range photogrammetry has proven to be a precise and efficient measurement technique for the assessment of shape accuracies of solar concentrators and their components. The flexibility of photogrammetry to provide high accuracy 3d-coordinate measurements over almost any scale resulted in the development of the QFoto system for inline quality control of support structures in parabolic trough collector assembly lines before the mirror panels are attached. The paper gives an overview of the capabilities of the QFoto system, its layout and measurement adapters and a description of the employed in-situ camera calibration. Special attention is given to the internal quality control of the system and features like the statistical process control, and the evaluation of the angles of all mirror brackets within one single measurement using specific measurement adapters.

Vorgestellt wird eine auf transiente Thermografie basierende Feldmesstechnik zur Bestimmung der Wärmeverluste von Parabolrinnen-Receivern. Durch thermische Anregung des innen liegenden Absorberrohres und Messung von Absorberrohr-, Glashüllrohr- und Umgebungstemperaturen lässt sich unter Verwendung eines numerischen Receivermodells auf die Wärmeverluste schließen. Zusätzlich ableitbar sind Emissivität der selektiven Beschichtung und die Güte des Vakuums, so dass Aussagen über einen potenziellen Schadensmechanismus ermöglicht werden. Die transiente Methode ergänzt bestehende stationäre Messtechniken. Sie ist, verglichen mit einer reinen Messung der Glashüllrohrtemperatur, aufwändiger in der Durchführung, bietet aber eine kleinere Messunsicherheit und einen höheren Informationsgehalt.

Der optische Wirkungsgrad von solaren Konzentratoren wird maßgeblich durch die genaue Einhaltung der Sollform der Spiegeloberfläche bestimmt. Zur hochgenauen Vermessung der Formabweichungen solcher Konzentratoren wurde ein optisches Messverfahren entwickelt, das auf der Beobachtung von im Spiegel reflektierten und deformierten Streifenmustern basiert. Die Messmethode kann flexibel für beliebige Geometrien eingesetzt werden und wurde als feststehender Prüfstand im DLR-Qualifizierungszentrum für solarthermische Kraftwerkstechnik aufgebaut Dieser Prüfstand erlaubt eine herstellerunabhängige Bewertung der Form-Qualität von Konzentratorspiegeln. Das Messverfahren wurde darüber hinaus für die dynamische Vermessung der Deformationen von schwingenden Spiegeln weiterentwickelt und erprobt.

Optische Messmethoden haben sich in der Produktion und im Betrieb solarthermischer Kraftwerke erfolgreich etabliert. Die automatisierte Erkennung von Strukturen in Digital-Bildern führt zu einer erheblichen Zeitersparnis, z.B. in der Online-Qualitätssicherung in der Produktion von Parabolrinnen-Kollektoren. Des Weiteren ergeben sich daraus neue Anwendungsgebiete wie die vollautomatische Formmessung und Tracking-Kontrolle von Heliostaten im laufenden Kraftwerksbetrieb mittels Nahbereichs-Photogrammetrie.

Im Projekt SAPHIR wurden optische Messsysteme zur Unterstützung bei der Heliostat-Prototypen-Entwicklung, bei der Facetten- und Heliostat-Montage und zur Endabnahme von Heliostatenfeldern für solare Turmkraftwerke entwickelt. Diese Systeme beruhen auf photogrammetrischen und deflektometrischen Methoden. Zudem wurden zur Überwachung einer optimierten Betriebsstrategie eine neue Methode zur Flussdichtemessung auf offenen volumetrischen Receivern entwickelt und Temperaturmessungen (Infrarot-Thermografie) an einem Testreceiver durchgeführt. Zusätzlich wurde ein System zum Monitoring der Heliostat-Ausrichtung entwickelt. Ein neues Raytracing-Programm zur Verarbeitung hochaufgelöster Heliostatdaten dient sowohl zur Bewertung der Ergebnisse der optischen Messsysteme als auch zur Ermittlung optimierter Betriebsstrategien unter Berücksichtigung realer Heliostatfelddaten.

Heliostats of central receiver solar power plants reach dimensions up to 150 m2 with focal lengths up to 1000 m. Their optical properties and tracking accuracy have great influence on the power plant efficiency and need to be monitored both at plant start up and during operation. Up to now, there are few efficient and fast measurement techniques to access the heliostat properties. Flux density measurements and close-range photogrammetry are possible approaches, yet they do not fulfill the requirement to be accurate, inexpensive and fast at the same time. In this paper, we present a non-contact measurement principle, which uses edge detection to extract the heliostat and facet vertices. This information is used to calculate the surface normals. Furthermore, the corners can replace retroreflective targets generally used in close-range photogrammetry, thus enabling a fast and completely automatic evaluation of the three-dimensional heliostat structure. The pictures are provided by a digital camera which is mounted on a pan tilt head on top of the central receiver tower, offering visibility to all heliostats and allowing the automated qualification of whole heliostat fields in a short period of time. It is shown that measurement uncertainties in heliostat orientation for the investigated heliostat are below 4 mrad in 80% of the relevant heliostat positions. Heliostat orientation is available within three minutes. Photogrammetric measurements based on edge detection at a 40-m2 CESA-1 heliostat at the Plataforma Solar de Almerìa (PSA) exhibit an accuracy of 1.6 mrad for a single-facet normal vector with the results being available within 30 minutes. The reduced measurement time allows the economic characterization of entire heliostat fields. The lower accuracy compared to manual photogrammetry with retroreflective targets is still sufficient to detect facet misalignments in existing heliostat fields.

Mittels photogrammetrischer Methoden lassen sich quantitative Größen für die Qualifizierung der Genauigkeit eines Parabolrinnen-Kollektors schnell und zuverlässig messen. Für eine Serienfertigung der Parabolrinnen wurde eine automatisierte photogrammetrische Messeinrichtung entwickelt. Sie wird in die Kollektorproduktionslinie integriert und ermöglicht es, Montagefehler im Produktionsprozess sofort zu erkennen, um rechtzeitig deren Ursachen zu beseitigen. Der Einsatz eines solchen Systems stellt daher eine sinnvolle Maßnahme zur Dokumentation der Fertigung sowie zur Sicherung des energetischen Ertrags des Solarfeldes und damit des ökonomischen Erfolges eines Kraftwerkprojekts dar.

In solar thermal receiver development for solar-fossil combined cycle power plants, high receiver air outlet temperatures are desirable to increase the solar share of electricity generation. However, an increase in outlet temperature above 800°C in volumetric, pressurized receivers causes the quartz glass window to overheat. In this work, the problem is solved through the use of an external window cooling system. Cooling is done by several air jets incident on the concave window. First, a thermodynamic receiver model is developed for a detailed analysis of excess window heating. Then, different cooling configurations are examined in CFD simulations and laboratory measurements. For the experimental investigation, a periodic-transient technique for high spatial resolution measurement of the convective heat transfer coefficient on two-dimensionally curved surfaces was further developed. Numerical and experimental studies show that, due to spatial limitations for positioning the nozzles, an asymmetric cooling configuration with air mass flow pulsation is the best solution. Full-scale solar testing validates the models and correlations developed in this work. [DE] In der Entwicklung solarthermischer Receiver für solar-fossile GuD-Kraftwerke werden hohe Receiverluftaustrittstemperaturen angestrebt. Dies ermöglicht die Erhöhung des Anteils solar erzeugten Stromes. Eine Steigerung der Austrittstemperatur über 800°C führt jedoch bei volumetrischen Druckreceivern zu einer Überhitzung des Quarzglasfensters. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das Problem mit einer externen Fensterkühlung, bei der das konkav geformte Fenster durch Anblasen mit mehreren Luftstrahlen gekühlt wird, gelöst. Zunächst wird zur detaillierten Analyse der Fensterüberhitzung ein thermodynamisches Receivermodell erstellt. Anschließend werden verschiedene Kühlkonfigurationen mit Hilfe von Strömungssimulationen und einem Labormessstand untersucht. Für die experimentellen Untersuchungen wird ein periodisch-transientes Messverfahren zur Bestimmung des konvektiven Wärmeübergangskoeffizienten in hoher örtlicher Auflösung auf zweiachsig gekrümmten Oberflächen weiterentwickelt. Die numerischen und experimentellen Untersuchungen zeigen, dass aufgrund der räumlichen Restriktionen hinsichtlich der Düsenpositionierung eine asymmetrische Kühlkonfiguration mit Luftmassenstrom-Pulsation die beste Lösung darstellt. Solare Tests an einer Versuchsanlage im realen Maßstab validieren die in dieser Arbeit entwickelten Modelle und Korrelationen.
