BackgroundPrevious studies have suggested a correlation between dietary inflammatory potential and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the association between dietary inflammatory potential, measured by the dietary inflammation index (DII), and NAFLD.MethodsFrom establishing the database to June 2023, a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library were performed to identify relevant observational studies. Urbanization within the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (UAMRYR) faces increasing tension between growth, human welfare, and ecological preservation. This study investigates the interplay between new-type urbanization (NTU) and ecological well-being performance (EWP) as potential mitigation approaches. Using the entropy weight topsis and super-efficiency SBM models, we quantify NTU and EWP within the UAMRYR. Additionally, the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) elucidates the intricate dynamics between these systems. Our findings indicate that NTU is underdeveloped, particularly economically and socially. The EWP underwent volatile periods before rapid expansion. The majority of CCD exhibited low coordination, oscillating between 0.4 and 0.5. Spatial analysis showed marked polarization within the UAMRYR and a “high-low-moderate” core-periphery distribution. Guided by these insights, we suggest policies to enhance CCD between NTU and EWP. These strategies aim to align sustainable urban growth with economic development, balanced ecological preservation, and human welfare enhancement.

BackgroundThis meta-analysis aimed to compare the prognostic between lobectomy and sublobar resection in patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).MethodsWe conducted a detailed search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the prognosis of lobectomy and sublobar resection for stage I NSCLC, with the primary outcomes being overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS).ResultsA total of 2222 patients were included in the 5 RCTs. The results showed no statistical difference in OS (HR=0.87, p=0.445) and DFS (HR=0.99, p=0.918) between patients who underwent lobectomy and sublobar resection during the total follow-up period. In terms of dichotomous variables, there were no statistical differences in OS (relative ratio [RR]=1.05, p=0.848) and DFS (RR=1.21, p=0.075) between the two groups during the total follow-up period, as well as 5-year OS (RR=0.96, p=0.409) and 5-year DFS (RR=0.95, p=0.270). In addition, subgroup analysis showed a better prognosis for non-adenocarcinoma patients with sublobar resection than lobectomy (HR=0.53, p=0.037), but also an increased cause of cancer death (not limited to lung cancer) (RR=1.56, p=0.004).ConclusionOur results showed that for stage I NSCLC, lobectomy is usually not a justified operation.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42023407301, identifier CRD42023407301.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the land–ocean interface plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, yet its dynamic is not well understood. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the northern Beibu Gulf was measured seasonally from April 2020 to January 2021. Chromophoric and fluorescent DOM (CDOM and FDOM) were synchronously characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Three fluorescent components were identified from 597 samples using parallel factor analysis, including two humic-like and one protein-like component. DOC displays a significant seasonality with the average level being highest in summer (177 μmol/L) and lowest in winter (107 μmol/L). CDOM and FDOM levels in summer are also higher than those in winter. Although the variation ranges of DOC, CDOM, and FDOM in surface water are generally greater than in bottom water, the difference between the two layers is statistically insignificant. River discharge and anthropogenic input are important external sources of DOM in the low-salinity nearshore waters (i.e., estuaries and coast), whereas DOM in offshore waters is mainly produced by in situ biological activity. The mixing behavior of DOM in the northern Beibu Gulf varies spatially but minimally on a seasonal scale. Two distinct conservative mixing behaviors of DOC, CDOM, and humic-like FDOM occur in the nearshore waters from Tieshangang Bay and excluding Tieshangang Bay, respectively. The removal of protein-like FDOM along the salinity gradient and the negative correlation between protein-like FDOM intensity and apparent oxygen utilization are pronounced in the nearshore waters excluding Tieshangang Bay, jointly indicating that oxygen is consumed by microbial communities. In contrast, a net addition of DOC occurs in the high-salinity offshore waters, whereas the CDOM and humic-like FDOM undergoes quasi-conservative mixing. Overall, this study reveals notable spatial and seasonal variations in the concentration, source, and mixing of DOM at the land–ocean interface and highlights the importance of sources and processes in shaping the amount and composition of DOM exported to the ocean margin.

Global climate change has increased the frequency of extreme precipitation events, impacting water use and the physiological properties of plants. Therefore, we assessed whether there is a synergistic or coupling relationship between water source transformation and the regulation of physiological factors in a mixed forest based on stable isotope and thermal diffusion principles. The absorption ratios of Quercus acutissima Carruth. to shallow water (62.0 % to 30.5 %) gradually decreased with rainfall, and the utilization ratio of deep water (21.2 % to 30.6 %) gradually increased with rainfall, indicating a sensitivity to different rainfall amounts. Heavy metal contaminations in the marine environment are of considerable attention because of their high potential ecological effects and public concern for human health. However, the influencing factors for the large-scale distributions of heavy metals in Beibu Gulf, a newly developing industry and port in South China, are still unclear due to the lack of large-scale investigation. Here, a total of 871 samples in the 127 stations in the seawater of Beibu Gulf during spring, summer, fall and winter in 2020-2021 were analyzed for dissolved heavy metal concentrations and physicochemical parameters. The concentrations of heavy metals in the Beibu Gulf ranked following the order of Zn > Cu > Cr > As > Pb > Hg > Cd. Compared to other regions, the concentrations of Hg were at relatively higher levels, which were mainly influenced by the input of the transportation of water masses from the local and other regions; whereas the other heavy metals were at relatively lower levels. Seasonally variations in the concentrations of heavy metals were observed in the gulf, which is mainly influenced by human activities (i.e., shipping and mariculture activities) and seasonally hydrological conditions. Seasonal changes in the spatial distribution of heavy metals have been found in the gulf. The higher concentrations of heavy metals mainly occurred in the coastal bays or areas in summer whereas the higher concentrations were observed in the offshore areas during the other three seasons. This is mainly related to the seasonal changes of the water masses that affect the seawater of Beibu Gulf, which exhibits the dominant contribution of coastal current from the northern Beibu Gulf in summer, and the dominant contribution of west-Guangdong coastal current and SCS water during the other three seasons. The potential ecological risk index revealed that Hg is the main ecological risk factor in the gulf, and the heavy metal contamination in the gulf seems to be noticeable. This study highlights the seasonal changes of the water masses that affect the seawater of Beibu Gulf greatly affecting the large-scale distributions of heavy metals in the gulf.

In this study, microplastics were sampled and analyzed from surface water and sediment samples from July to August in 2020, in the Beibu Gulf (the northern South China Sea [SCS]), a gulf with intensive fishery activities while the economy is less developed, compared with other coastal areas of China. The abundances of microplastics in seawater and sediment in the Beibu Gulf were 0.67 items/m3 and 4.33 items/kg of dry weight, respectively. In seawater, the fragments (92.38%) contributed the most, and polystyrene (PS) was the dominant polymer (53.23%). In sediment, the most abundant microplastics were fiber (82.93%) and rayon (RY; 39.54%). The abundances of remarkably higher microplastics were found in the seawater and sediment adjacent to the urban area. The abundances of microplastics in far coastal sediment were only slightly lower than that in the coastal sediment, indicating that microplastics are ready to transport and bury in open area sediment. Significant positive correlations between the microplastic abundance and population density and per capita gross domestic product (GDP) were found in Chinese coastal seawater, with low population density and less developed economy, and the microplastic pollution in the Beibu Gulf was at a low level. This study provides preliminary data of microplastics in the Beibu Gulf, supporting further investigation of transportation fate and management of this emerging pollutant from the coastal zone to the SCS.

Abstract Background Guang-Pheretima, which is originated from Pheretima aspergillum, has been documented in academic Chinese herbal studies for nearly 2000 years for its prominent treating effects of various inflammatory diseases such as asthma, cough and fever. However, the anti-inflammatory activity and mechanism of Guang-Pheretima has been rarely reported. Hence, we investigated the inhibitory effect and the underlying mechanism of Guang-Pheretima aqueous extracts on inflammatory response in RAW 264.7 cells. Method RAW 264.7 macrophages were pretreated with various concentrations of Guang-Pheretima decoction (GPD) or protein-free Guang-Pheretima decoction (PF-GPD) and subsequently stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to trigger the inflammatory response. Productions of nitric oxide (NO) were determined by Griess reaction, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The protein expressions and messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) amounts of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 were analyzed by Western Blot and Real-Time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. Finally, the translocation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB was observed by Western Blot. Results GPD of the experimental concentrations showed no anti-inflammatory activity. In contrast, PF-GPD at concentrations of 40–320 μg/mL significantly inhibited NF-κB activation and reduced the production of inflammatory mediators, such as NO, PGE2, TNF-α, as well as the related key synthases including iNOS and COX-2. Moreover, PF-GPD markedly suppressed the release of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and IL-6. Conclusion These results demonstrate the excellent anti-inflammatory properties of PF-GPD, and suggest that Guang-Pheretima may be used to treat and prevent certain inflammatory diseases.

To clarify the taste differences between surimi products from different fish species and establish a taste fingerprint of surimi products, three species of marine fish (hairtail, red sea snapper, and golden thread) and three species of freshwater fish (silver carp, grass carp, and black carp) were used to produce surimi gels. The taste profiles of the gels were analyzed by an electronic tongue, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography, and a taste fingerprint of surimi was established by significance analysis of microarray (SAM), cluster analysis, and heatmap analysis. The results showed that the taste characteristics of the six surimi products were significantly different. Hairtail surimi contained high levels of glutamate (2.37 mg/100 g) and aspartic acid (1.32 mg/100 g). Golden thread surimi showed the lowest contents of glutamate and aspartic acid. In addition, grass carp surimi contained relatively high contents of proline (tasting sweet) and histidine (tasting bitter). The proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in marine surimi was about twice as high as that in freshwater surimi. Among the freshwater surimi products, the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids was relatively higher in silver carp surimi. Compared with freshwater surimi, marine fish surimi had a higher content of betaine, inosine 5’-monophosphate (IMP) and guanosine 5’-monophosphate (GMP), and a lower content of hyperxanthine (Hx). Through SAM, a total of 46 differential substances were selected between the six surimi products, and the taste fingerprint constructed based on these differential substances by heatmap analysis could directly reflect the taste differences and major differential substances between freshwater and marine fish surimi.
