1. Photoactivation of color centers induced by laser irradiation in ion-implanted diamond

Abstract: Split-vacancy color centers in diamond are promising solid state platforms for the implementation of photonic quantum technologies. These luminescent defects are commonly fabricated upon low energy ion implantation and subsequent thermal annealing. Their technological uptake will require the availability of reliable methods for the controlled, large scale production of localized individual photon emitters. This task is partially achieved by controlled ion implantation to introduce selected impurities in the host material, and requires the development of challenging beam focusing or collimation procedures coupled with single-ion detection techniques. We report on protocol for the direct optical activation of split-vacancy color centers in diamond via localized processing with continuous wave laser at mW optical powers. We demonstrate the activation of photoluminescent Mg- and Sn-related centers at both the ensemble and single-photon emitter level in ion-implanted, high-purity diamond crystals without further thermal processing. The proposed lithographic method enables the activation of individual color centers at specific positions of a large area sample by means of a relatively inexpensive equipment offering the real-time, in situ monitoring of the process., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Machine learning (ML) represents a promising approach that could support clinicians in the diagnosis of mental disorders. Objectives: A systematic review, according to the PRISMA statement, was conducted to evaluate its accuracy to distinguish SCZ patients from healthy controls. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, PsychINFO and the Cochrane Library through December 2018 using generic terms for ML techniques and SCZ without language or time restriction. Thirty-five studies were included in this review: eight of them used structural neuroimaging, twenty-six used functional neuroimaging and one both, with a minimum accuracy >60% (most of them 75–90%). Sensitivity, Specificity and accuracy were extracted from each publication or obtained directly from authors. Results: Support vector machine, the most frequent technique, if associated with other ML techniques achieved accuracy close to 100%. The prefrontal and temporal cortices appeared to be the most useful brain regions for the diagnosis of SCZ. ML analysis can efficiently detect significantly altered brain connectivity in patients with SCZ (eg, default mode network, visual network, sensorimotor network, frontoparietal network and salience network). Conclusion: The greater accuracy demonstrated by these predictive models and the new models resulting from the integration of multiple ML techniques will be increasingly decisive for early diagnosis and evaluation of the treatment response and to establish the prognosis of patients with SCZ. To achieve a real benefit for patients, the future challenge is to reach an accurate diagnosis not only through clinical evaluation but also with the aid of ML algorithms.Keywords: machine learning, schizophrenia, support vector machine, resting-state fMRI, sMRI, multivariate pattern analysis

3. Fabrication of quantum emitters in aluminium nitride by Al-ion implantation and thermal annealing

Abstract: Single-photon emitters (SPEs) within wide-bandgap materials represent an appealing platform for the development of single-photon sources operating at room temperatures. Group III- nitrides have previously been shown to host efficient SPEs which are attributed to deep energy levels within the large bandgap of the material, in a way that is similar to extensively investigated colour centres in diamond. Anti-bunched emission from defect centres within gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminium nitride (AlN) have been recently demonstrated. While such emitters are particularly interesting due to the compatibility of III-nitrides with cleanroom processes, the nature of such defects and the optimal conditions for forming them are not fully understood. Here, we investigate Al implantation on a commercial AlN epilayer through subsequent steps of thermal annealing and confocal microscopy measurements. We observe a fluence-dependent increase in the density of the emitters, resulting in creation of ensembles at the maximum implantation fluence. Annealing at 600 {\deg}C results in the optimal yield in SPEs formation at the maximum fluence, while a significant reduction in SPE density is observed at lower fluences. These findings suggest that the mechanism of vacancy formation plays a key role in the creation of the emitters, and open new perspectives in the defect engineering of SPEs in solid state., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising systems for quantum technologies, including quantum metrology and sensing. A promising strategy for the achievement of high sensitivity to external fields relies on the exploitation of large ensembles of NV centers, whose fabrication by ion implantation is upper limited by the amount of radiation damage introduced in the diamond lattice. In this works we demonstrate an approach to increase the density of NV centers upon the high-fluence implantation of MeV N2+ ions on a hot target substrate (>550 {\deg}C). Our results show that, with respect to room-temperature implantation, the high-temperature process increases the vacancy density threshold required for the irreversible conversion of diamond to a graphitic phase, thus enabling to achieve higher density ensembles. Furthermore, the formation efficiency of color centers was investigated on diamond substrates implanted at varying temperatures with MeV N2+ and Mg+ ions revealing that the formation efficiency of both NV centers and magnesium-vacancy (MgV) centers increases with the implantation temperature., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

5. Solving the conundrum of intervening strong MgII absorbers towards GRBs and quasars

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the incidence rate of intervening strong MgII absorbers towards GRBs were a factor of 2 - 4 higher than towards quasars. Exploring the similar sized and uniformly selected legacy data sets XQ-100 and XSGRB, each consisting of 100 quasar and 81 GRB afterglow spectra obtained with a single instrument (VLT/X-shooter), we demonstrate that there is no disagreement in the number density of strong MgII absorbers with rest-frame equivalent widths $W_r^{2796} >$ 1 {\AA} towards GRBs and quasars in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 5. With large and similar sample sizes, and path length coverages of $\Delta$z = 57.8 and 254.4 for GRBs and quasars, respectively, the incidences of intervening absorbers are consistent within 1 sigma uncertainty levels at all redshifts. For absorbers at z < 2.3 the incidence towards GRBs is a factor of 1.5$\pm$0.4 higher than the expected number of strong MgII absorbers in SDSS quasar spectra, while for quasar absorbers observed with X-shooter we find an excess factor of 1.4$\pm$0.2 relative to SDSS quasars. Conversely, the incidence rates agree at all redshifts with reported high spectral resolution quasar data, and no excess is found. The only remaining discrepancy in incidences is between SDSS MgII catalogues and high spectral resolution studies. The rest-frame equivalent width distribution also agrees to within 1 sigma uncertainty levels between the GRB and quasar samples. Abstract: Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is prevalent and disabling among older adults. Standing on its tolerability profile, vortioxetine might be a promising alternative to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in such a vulnerable population. Methods: We conducted a randomised, assessor- and statistician-blinded, superiority trial including older adults with MDD. The study was conducted between 02/02/2019 and 02/22/2023 in 11 Italian Psychiatric Services. Participants were randomised to vortioxetine or one of the SSRIs, selected according to common practice. Treatment discontinuation due to adverse events after six months was the primary outcome, for which we aimed to detect a 12% difference in favour of vortioxetine. The study was registered in the online repository clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03779789). Findings: The intention-to-treat population included 179 individuals randomised to vortioxetine and 178 to SSRIs. Mean age was 73.7 years (standard deviation 6.1), and 264 participants (69%) were female. Of those on vortioxetine, 78 (44%) discontinued the treatment due to adverse events at six months, compared to 59 (33%) of those on SSRIs (odds ratio 1.56; 95% confidence interval 1.01–2.39). Adjusted and per-protocol analyses confirmed point estimates in favour of SSRIs, but without a significant difference. With the exception of the unadjusted survival analysis showing SSRIs to outperform vortioxetine, secondary outcomes provided results consistent with a lack of substantial safety and tolerability differences between the two arms. Overall, no significant differences emerged in terms of response rates, depressive symptoms and quality of life, while SSRIs outperformed vortioxetine in terms of cognitive performance. Interpretation: As opposed to what was previously hypothesised, vortioxetine did not show a better tolerability profile compared to SSRIs in older adults with MDD in this study. Abstract: We observed the afterglow of GRB 221009A (Dichiara et al., GCN 32632; Kennea & Williams, GCN 32635; Bissaldi et al., GCN 32637; Veres et al., GCN 32636) with the Hubble Space Telescope on 8 November 2022, approximately 30 days after the Fermi/GBM trigger. Observations were obtained in five filters spanning the optical and NIR region (F625W, F775W, F098M, F125W and F160W). The optical/IR counterpart is well detected in all images, with provisional AB magnitudes of F625W = 23.61 +/- 0.04, F775W = 22.43 +/- 0.04, F098M = 21.21 +/- 0.01, F125W = 20.63 +/- 0.01, F160W = 20.37 +/- 0.01 mag, based on small apertures around the source location (errors statistical only). After correction for foreground extinction the spectral shape is indicative of a peak around 1 micron, which could be due to the contribution from the associated supernova (de Ugarte Postigo et al. GCN 32800, Belkin et al. GCN 32818, Maiorano et al. GCN 32850). Inspection of the images reveals faint emission to the NE which is only visible in the NIR bands, and which extends for approximately 1" (2.6 kpc at z = 0.151; de Ugarte Postigo et al., GCN 32648; Castro-Tirado et al. Abstract: This article reports the first detection of Tamarillo fruit ring virus (TaFRV) in Solanum spp. in Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Diseased fruit samples from different Solanum species were intercepted at Heathrow Airport and tested for virus infection. The samples tested positive for potyviruses, and further analysis confirmed the presence of TaFRV. This discovery suggests that TaFRV has a wider host range and distribution than previously reported. Given the significant production of Solanum crops in these countries, monitoring the potential impact on production is important. The study also provides real-time RT-PCR primers for easier and reliable virus detection. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract: Centrifugal pumps are turbomachines that have wide industrial applications and could perform in different ways such as pump and turbine mode. The maintenance of this equipment is mostly carried out using invasive methods that are expensive, time-consuming, and even complicated. The application of non-invasive methods is sought since they offer the advantage of real-time monitoring without stopping the process, reducing component assembly and disassembly times and providing a faster response. The aim of this work is done an experimental investigation that shows evidence about how the information on the hydraulic variables can be obtained if the electrical variables are monitored for the modes of operation such as pump and turbine. This work is divided into two parts, the first part is based on a statistical analysis to perform a multivariate adjustment through copulas and probability distributions. The second part focuses on the graphical analysis of the power density spectra for the hydraulic variables, the torque, and the defined electrical variables. The amplitude peaks of each variable and which peaks are common between them are determined. A statistically significant fit for Tawn type 2 copula is obtained with the indicator variable of pressure fluctuation and a multivariate transformation of the three-phase network currents. In the spectra analysis, common amplitude peaks are observed between the spectra that indicate the information flow on the phenomena between the hydraulic variables and the electrical variables. Questi giovani sono a rischio di esclusione e di compromissione del proprio benessere sociale. Il presente lavoro si propone di analizzare alcune strategie di riattivazione per i giovani NEET utilizzate in tre progetti ruotanti attorno al tema dello sport. Lo studio è stato realizzato tramite interviste semistrutturate a 18 ragazzi tra 15 e 24 anni (M = 18.00; SD = 2.39). Dal presente lavoro di ricerca emerge l’importanza di fornire ai NEET delle occasioni di crescita e sperimentazione in contesti “protetti”. La riflessione conclusiva sottolinea l’importanza di agire su più livelli: lo sport o comunque attività ricreative, la presenza di coetanei simili e di adulti competenti., The acronym NEET refers to those young people who are not engaged in training or work. These young people are at risk of exclusion and reduction of their social well-being. This paper aims to analyze some reactivation strategies for young NEETs used in three projects using sport. The study was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 18 boys between 15 and 24 years of age (M = 18.00; SD = 2.39). From this research work, the importance of providing NEETs with opportunities for growth and experimentation in "protected" contexts emerges. The final reflection underlines the importance of acting on several levels: sport or in any case recreational activities, the presence of peers and competent adults.

Abstract: A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the larger event sample. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26% fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming neutrino oscillations, both measurements suggest maximum mixing and Dm2 of a few times 10-3 eV2. The other samples are due to the internally produced events and to upward-going stopping muons. Abstract: "Muscle is the natural contractile system that artificial systems attempt to emulate.” [1]. This presentation is based on a paradigm: "living matter realizes motions at almost no stress". You can experiment by yourself by flexing your forearm: two large muscles, the biceps and the triceps, will change their shapes by a large amount, the shape-changes are not isotropic at all, but are isochoric—long, slender shapes transform into short, broad ones, and vice versa; more important, your forearm will not spring back to any preferred configuration, meaning that muscles are not storing any elastic energy whatsoever. Our goal is to put forward a theoretical framework to improve our ability to produce controlled motions of soft materials, by mimicking natural muscles. Most of our investigations originated as a question: is it possible to have very large, non-isotropic, shape-changes of a deformable body without varying its elastic energy? The answer is yes: soft matter exhibits noticeable morphological changes, which may arise as a consequence of many different ‘actuations’. Our involvement dates back to the seminal paper [2] that prompted us a thoroughly study of non-linear elasticity with large, evolving distortions. At first, we proposed the use of the notion of large distortions as a modeling tool for soft material [3]; since then, the same tool proved very useful in modeling apparently disparate phenomena such as muscle contractions, [4], director reorientations in nematic elastomers [5], phase transitions in nematic gels [6, 7], actuation of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites [8]. A distinctive attribute for all these phenomena is that large displacements are triggered by evolving distortions; moreover, it is possible to realize, through distortions, very large shape changes at no, or low, change of the elastic energy [9]. Abstract: We have measured directly the residual energy of cosmic ray muons crossing the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. For this measurement we have used a transition radiation detector consisting of three identical modules, each of about 12 m(2) area, operating in the energy region from 100 GeV to 1 TeV, The results presented here were obtained with the first module collecting data for more than two years. The average single muon energy is found to be 320 +/- 4 (stat.) +/- 11 (syst.) GeV in the rock depth range 3000-6500 hg/cm(2). The results are in agreement with calculations of the energy loss of muons in the rock above the detector. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: The contemporaneous measurement of TeV muons in deep underground laboratories and of the e.m. component at the surface allows checking the hadron interaction models and the propagation codes used in EAS experiments in a primary energy range 10–50 TeV in which the primary spectra are measured by direct experiments. First results of such measurements between MACRO and EAS-TOP at the Gran Sasso laboratory, in this energy range, are here reported.

Abstract: Hepatitis G virus/ GB virus C is a novel flavivirus recently detected in hepatitis non A-E cases. In this study, the presence of this virus in chronic non-B, non-C hepatitis patients was evaluated using GBV-C specific PCR and this virus was detected in one out of thirteen patients. This patient has presented a severe liver failure, has lived for a long time in the Western Amazon basin and no other cause for this clinical picture was reported. The impact of the discovery of this new agent is still under evaluation throughout the world. The study of the prevalence of this virus among chronic hepatitis patients and healthy individuals (as blood donors) will furnish subside to evaluate its real pathogenicity. O vírus da Hepatite G ou vírus GB-C é um novo vírus recentemente descoberto em casos de hepatites não A-E. Neste estudo, casos de hepatite crônica não-B, não-C foram testados com uma reação de amplificação específica para GBV-C. Este vírus foi detectado em 1 entre os 13 casos estudados. Este paciente apresentava insuficiência hepática severa, tinha habitado por vários anos na Amazônia Ocidental e nenhuma outra causa para este quadro clínico havia sido relatada. O impacto da descoberta deste novo agente está ainda sendo investigado. O estudo da prevalência deste vírus entre pacientes com hepatite crônica e entre indivíduos sadios (como, por exemplo, doadores de sangue) fornecerá subsídios para o estabelecimento de sua real patogenicidade.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced upgoing muons (~100 GeV) using the MACRO detector. The ratio of the number of observed to expected events integrated over all zenith angles is 0.74 +/- 0.036 (stat) +/- 0.046(systematic) +/- 0.13 (theoretical). The observed zenith distribution for -1.0 < cos(theta) < -0.1 does not fit well with the no oscillation expectation, giving a maximum probability for chi^2 of 0.1%. The acceptance of the detector has been extensively studied using downgoing muons, independent analyses and Monte-Carlo simulations. The other systematic uncertainties cannot be the source of the discrepancies between the data and expectations. We have investigated whether the observed number of events and the shape of the zenith distribution can be explained by a neutrino oscillation hypothesis. Fitting either the flux or zenith distribution independently yields mixing parameters of sin^2 (2theta)=1.0 and delta m^2 of a few times 10^-3 eV^2. However, the observed zenith distribution does not fit well with any expectations giving a maximum probability for chi^2 of 5% for the best oscillation hypothesis, and the combined probability for the shape and number of events is 17%. We conclude that these data favor a neutrino oscillation hypothesis, but with unexplained structure in the zenith distribution not easily explained by either the statistics or systematics of the experiment., Comment: 7 pages (two-column) with 4 figures

Abstract: An experimental study of the production of up-going charged particles in inelastic interactions of down-going underground muons is reported, using data obtained from the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. In a sample of 12.2 10^6 single muons, corresponding to a detector livetime of 1.55 y, 243 events are observed having an up-going particle associated with a down-going muon. These events are analysed to determine the range and emission angle distributions of the up-going particle, corrected for detection and reconstruction efficiency. Measurements of the muon neutrino flux by underground detectors are often based on the observation of through-going and stopping muons produced in $\nu_\mu$ interactions in the rock below the detector. Up-going particles produced by an undetected down-going muon are a potential background source in these measurements. Abstract: We have measured directly the residual energy of cosmic ray muons crossing the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. For this measurement we have used a transition radiation detector consisting of three identical modules, each of about 12 m^2 area, operating in the energy region from 100 GeV to 1 TeV. The results presented here were obtained with the first module collecting data for more than two years. The average single muon energy is found to be 320 +/- 4 (stat.) +/- 11 (syst.) GeV in the rock depth range 3000-6500 hg/cm^2. The results are in agreement with calculations of the energy loss of muons in the rock above the detector., 21 pages with 9 figures

Abstract: We present first results about the measurement of the characteristics of charged hadrons production by atmospheric muons in the rock above MACRO. Selection criteria which allow to discriminate hadron cascades from e.m. showers generated by muons are described. A comparison between the measured rate with that expected from a Monte Carlo simulation which treats the process as dominated by photo-nuclear interaction is presented. These data can be used to validate such models aiming to the evaluation of hadron background from cosmic muons in different experimental environments.

Abstract: The report describes the research effort devoted to the study and development of a device and material technology to provide electronic and electrical components, circuits, and equipment that will operate successfully in the ocean environment without the need for pressure shell protection. The work has been concerned with: (1) identification and evaluation of device problem areas, (2) development of technology to be used to prevent device failures, and (3) identification and evaluation of system requirements. Its purpose is to document, in a logical manner, the results of the work in determining the influences of an oil/pressure environment on contemporary electronic/electrical components and systems.

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the incidence rate of intervening strong MgII absorbers towards GRBs were a factor of 2 - 4 higher than towards quasars. Exploring the similar sized and uniformly selected legacy data sets XQ-100 and XSGRB, each consisting of 100 quasar and 81 GRB afterglow spectra obtained with a single instrument (VLT/X-shooter), we demonstrate that there is no disagreement in the number density of strong MgII absorbers with rest-frame equivalent widths $W_r^{2796} >$ 1 �� towards GRBs and quasars in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 5. With large and similar sample sizes, and path length coverages of $��$z = 57.8 and 254.4 for GRBs and quasars, respectively, the incidences of intervening absorbers are consistent within 1 sigma uncertainty levels at all redshifts. For absorbers at z < 2.3 the incidence towards GRBs is a factor of 1.5$\pm$0.4 higher than the expected number of strong MgII absorbers in SDSS quasar spectra, while for quasar absorbers observed with X-shooter we find an excess factor of 1.4$\pm$0.2 relative to SDSS quasars. Conversely, the incidence rates agree at all redshifts with reported high spectral resolution quasar data, and no excess is found. The only remaining discrepancy in incidences is between SDSS MgII catalogues and high spectral resolution studies. The rest-frame equivalent width distribution also agrees to within 1 sigma uncertainty levels between the GRB and quasar samples. Abstract: Using data collected by the MACRO experiment during the years 1989-1996, we show evidence for the shadow of the moon in the underground cosmic ray flux with a significance of 3.6 sigma. This detection of the shadowing effect is the first by an underground detector. A maximum-likelihood analysis is used to determine that the angular resolution of the apparatus is 0.9+/-0.3 degrees. These results demonstrate MACRO's capabilities as a muon telescope by confirming its absolute pointing ability and quantifying its angular resolution., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures Submitted to Phys. Abstract: In this paper we present the results of a search for nuclearites in the penetrating cosmic radiation using the scintillator and track-etch subdetectors of the MACRO apparatus. The analyses cover the beta = v/c range at the detector depth (3700 hg/cm(2)) 10(-5) < beta < 1; for beta = 2 x 10(-3) the flux limit is 2.7 x 10(-16) cm(-2)s(-1)sr(-1) for an isotropic flux of nuclearites, and twice this value for a flux of downgoing nuclearites.

Abstract: Introduction: Childhood trauma and adversities (CTA) and aberrant salience (AS) have a pivotal role in schizophrenia development, but their interplay with psychotic symptoms remains vague. We explored the mediation performed by AS between CTA and psychotic symptomatology in schizophrenia., Methods: We approached 241 adults suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), who have been in the unit for at least 12 consecutive months, excluding the diagnosis of dementia, and recent substance abuse disorder, and cross-sectional evaluated through the Aberrant Salience Inventory (ASI), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Short-Form (CTQ-SF), and Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS). We tested a path-diagram where AS mediated the relationship between CTA and psychosis, after verifying each measure one-dimensionality through confirmatory factor analysis., Results: The final sample comprised 222 patients (36.9% female), with a mean age of 42.4 (± 13.3) years and an average antipsychotic dose of 453.6 (± 184.2) mg/day (chlorpromazine equivalents). The mean duration of untreated psychosis was 1.8 (± 2.0) years while the mean onset age was 23.9 (± 8.2) years. Significant paths were found from emotional abuse to ASI total score (β = 0.39; p < .001) and from ASI total score to PANSS positive (β = 0.17; p = .019). Finally, a statistically significant indirect association was found from emotional abuse to PANSS positive mediated by ASI total score (β = 0.06; p = .041; CI 95% [0.01, 0.13])., Conclusion: Emotional abuse has an AS-mediated effect on positive psychotic symptomatology. Abstract: Transient simulation of multiphase flow in pipes has been performed using Two-Fluid Model and Drift-Flux Model. The main advantage of the Drift-Flux Model is the reduced number of differential equations, which results in a lower computational time. However, the accuracy of the model depends on a suitable constitutive equation for the velocity of the dispersed phase, commonly, the gas phase. The gas velocity constitutive equation includes two important parameters, namely, the distribution coefficient and the void-fraction-weighted drift velocity. A drift-flux-model code was developed, by using the Finite Volume Method (FVM) with staggered grid system, to evaluate the effect of highly viscous liquid and pipe geometry (pipe diameter and pipe inclination) in the prediction of liquid hold-up and pressure drop gradient. The gas phase compressibility was also included in the model. The results show that the energy consumption to pump the fluids through the lift system has been overestimated when highly viscous liquids are produced. For the case of a vertical upward flow, the overestimation can be up to 10 % of energy consumption. We strongly recommend incorporating the effects of pipe inclination and liquid viscosity into the estimation of the Distribution Coefficient of the dispersed phase, encompassing both C 0 and gas drift velocity., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2023 The Authors.)
