The paper evaluates changes in the water temperature of the Vistula River – one of the longest rivers in Europe. Mean monthly and annual water temperatures from the period 1971–2017 for 11 stations along the entire length of the river revealed the increasing trends. The mean increase in water temperature in the analysed multi-annual period was 0.31 °C dec–1. In the majority of analysed stations, the key factor determining changes in the water temperature of the river was air temperature. The observed water warming in the Vistula River should be considered an exceptionally unfavourable situation in the context of importance of water temperature for a number of processes and phenomena occurring in river ecosystems. Given the scale of changes, fast measures should be undertaken to slow down the warming.

This publication presents an innovative tower cultivation device designed to significantly increase vertical farming's efficiency. The device divides the cultivation system into separate chambers. One division corresponds to the different growth phases of the plants, while another reflects the daily variation in conditions. Each chamber presents slightly different conditions and cultivation patterns from the others. For the early stages, crops are grown horizontally in trays; once they mature, they are transplanted into mobile cultivation towers. The closed circulation of ventilation and irrigation reduces water consumption by up to 95%. A unique separate day–night division optimises light, temperature, and humidity conditions, mimicking natural growth patterns. This approach not only saves water and energy but also improves cultivation in a three-dimensional space. The presented solution focuses on the often-overlooked aspects of cultivating in vertical farms and makes this method of growing much more cost-effective and feasible to implement on a large scale. Our comparative analysis with other vertical farming solutions is based on publicly available data and provides valuable insights, while acknowledging the potential limitations at play. Water temperature is a fundamental parameter of aquatic ecosystems. It directly influences most processes occurring within them. Hence, knowledge of this parameter's behavior, based on long-term (reliable) observations, is crucial. Gaps in these observations can be filled using contemporary methodological solutions. Difficulties in reconstructing water temperature arise from the selection of an appropriate methodology, and overcoming them involves the proper selection of input data and choosing the optimal modeling approach. This study employed the air2water model and Landsat satellite imagery to reconstruct the water temperature of Lake Miedwie (the fifth largest in Poland), for which field observations conducted by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management—National Research Institute ended in the late 1980s. The approach based on satellite images in this case yielded less accurate results than model analyses. However, it is important to emphasize the advantage of satellite images over point measurements in the spatial interpretation of lake thermal conditions. In the studied case, due to the lake's shape, the surface water layer showed no significant thermal contrasts. Based on the model data, long-term changes in water temperature were determined, which historically (1972–2023) amounted to 0.20 °C per decade. According to the adopted climate change scenarios by the end of the 21st century (SSP245 and SSP585), the average annual water temperature will be higher by 1.8 °C and 3.2 °C, respectively. It should be emphasized that the current and simulated changes are unfavorable, especially considering the impact of temperature on water quality. From an economic perspective, Lake Miedwie serves as a reservoir of drinking water, and changes in the thermal regime should be considered in the management of this ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continuous software development and widespread access to satellite imagery allow for obtaining increasingly accurate data on the natural environment. They play an important role in hydrosphere research, and one of the most frequently addressed issues in the era of climate change is the thermal dynamics of its components. Interesting research opportunities in this area are provided by the utilization of data obtained from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS). These data have been collected for over two decades and have already been used to study water temperature in lakes. In the case of Poland, there is a long history of studying the thermal regime of lakes based on in situ observations, but so far, MODIS data have not been used in these studies. In this study, the available products, such as 1-day and 8-day MODIS land surface temperature (LST), were validated. The obtained data were compared with in situ measurements, and the reliability of using these data to estimate long-term thermal changes in lake waters was also assessed. The analysis was conducted based on the example of two coastal lakes located in Poland. The results of 1-day LST MODIS generally showed a good fit compared to in situ measurements (average RMSE 1.9 °C). However, the analysis of long-term trends of water temperature changes revealed diverse results compared to such an approach based on field measurements. This situation is a result of the limited number of satellite data, which is dictated by environmental factors associated with high cloud cover reaching 60% during the analysis period. The aim of this study is to explain the higher incidence of subdural haematomas in elderly people compared to young adult. This research addresses the phenomenon by developing two distinct numerical models of the human head, simulating individuals people aged 77 and 28, respectively. These models are methodically constructed based on medical imaging data acquired through collaboration with hospitals and subsequently verified through empirical experimentation. Studies have shown that the main factor that influences the vulnerability to bridging vein rupture in older adults is the degenerative processes of nervous tissue. The most visible structural damage was observed in the outflow cuff segment. This phenomenon can be primarily attributed to specific geometric parameters associated with this anatomical region. The presented research emphasises the importance of computational models in understanding the pathomechanics of brain structures. As a result of the analyses, it was proven that the neurodegenerative processes of the brain that occur with age are crucial in understanding the higher incidence of subdural haematomas in elderly people. Lake Śniardwy is the largest among more than 7000 Polish lakes. So far, it has not been a subject of detailed investigations concerning long-term changes in water temperature or ice regime. A considerable change in thermal and ice conditions has been observed in the period 1972–2019. Mean annual water temperature increased by 0.44°C dec−1 on average, and was higher than an increase in air temperature (0.33°C dec−1). In the monthly cycle, the most dynamic changes occurred in April (0.77°C dec−1). In the case of ice cover, it appeared increasingly later (5.3 days dec−1), and disappeared earlier (3.0 days dec−1). The thickness of ice cover also decreased (2.4 cm dec−1). Statistical analysis by means of a Pettitt test showed that the critical moment for the transformations of the thermal and ice regime was the end of the 1980’s. In addition to the obvious relations with air temperature for both characteristics, it was evidenced that the occurrence of ice cover depended on wind speed and snow cover. The recorded changes in the case of Lake Śniardwy are considered unfavourable, and their consequences will affect the course of physical, chemical, and biological processes in the largest lake in Poland.

The paper presents the applicability of LiDAR data in limnological research with respect to the identification of the shoreline of lakes, and consequently the scale of overgrowing of lakes. Data obtained from the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography from the period 2011 2016 provided the basis for the identification of shorelines for 14 lakes of the Pomeranian Lakeland. The paper employs the orthophotomap for the determination of the range of lake vegetation. Using the line determined based on the orthophotomap and that determined based on LiDAR points, the zone of overgrowing of the analysed lakes was delineated. In all the analysed cases combined, the water surface area was found to be reduced in comparison to the shoreline identified through LiDAR scanning by 161.5 ha, suggesting a 21.2% share of vegetation in the surface area of lakes.

The paper presents the dynamics of daily water temperature fluctuations in Lake Kierskie (West Poland) and determines the effect of air temperatures and wind speed on the variability of the parameter (water temperature). The analysis was based on hourly water temperature values from the period from May 2012 to January 2018. The data analysis permitted the description of the thermal regime of waters in the lake in the hourly cycle in reference to each month, and designation of months characterised by the highest and lowest stability of water temperatures. More than half of the analysed days was characterised by a change in water temperature not exceeding 1°C. The course of water temperature showed strongly positive correlations with air temperature, and weak correlations with wind speed. Water temperatures in the lake were correlated the strongest with air temperatures with a 24 h time step.

The article presents the analysis of water level fluctuations in Lake Powidzkie in the years 1961–2015. The study shows a considerable decrease in mean water levels in the aforementioned multiannual period, averaging 9 cmꞏdecade−1. Such a situation is caused by natural as well as anthropogenic factors, co-determining water relations in the study area. The natural factors include the amount and distribution of precipitation, increase in air temperature and evaporation size, unfavourable relations between the lake and catchment or hydrogeological conditions. Anthropogenic factors particularly include long-term transformations of the natural environment in the region, currently associated with meliorations accompanying the nearby opencast brown coal mines and exploitation of groundwaters for municipal purposes. Water shortages occurring during dry periods were shown not to be compensated in the study area in humid years. This is particularly related to the regional lowering of the aquifer remaining in close relations with Lake Powidzkie. Counteracting the unfavourable hydrological situation is done through hydrotechnical infrastructure which partially limits water outflow from the lake through damming.

The paper discusses changes in the hydrological regime of high mountain Lake Morskie Oko located in the Tatra Mountains, in the Tatra Mountains National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve (MaB). According to the research conducted in the years 1971–2015, its water stages decreased by 3.5 cm·dec−1, mean annual water temperature increased by 0.3°C·dec−1 and the duration of ice phenomena and ice cover was reduced by 10 day·dec−1. No considerable changes in maximum values of ice cover thickness were recorded. Such tendencies are primarily caused by long-term changes in climatic conditions – air temperature and atmospheric precipitation. The hydrological regime of the lake was also determined by changes in land use in the lake’s catchment and its location in high mountains.

Lakes are vital components of the Earth's hydrological cycle and are susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Understanding the changes in terms of minimum and maximum lake surface temperatures is crucial for assessing the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. This study focuses on ten lakes in Poland to investigate the impacts of climate change on lake temperatures in different geographical regions. The Mann–Kendall (MK) and Sen tests were employed to analyze trends and changes in minimum and maximum water temperatures, respectively. The results reveal significant increases in the minimum and maximum temperatures, particularly in May and June. Different lakes exhibit varying trends and variability in temperature changes over time, indicating the vulnerability of these ecosystems. The current study also examines the magnitude of annual temperature changes and classifies them into different levels. This analysis highlights the complex relationship between air temperature, seasonal cycles, and lake morphometric characteristics in shaping variations in lake surface water temperature. These findings contribute to understanding the impacts of climate change on Poland's lakes and provide valuable insights for developing conservation strategies and adaptive measures to protect freshwater resources. Despite several decades of observations of ice cover in Polish lakes, researchers have not broadly applied satellite images to date. This paper presents a temporal and spatial analysis of the variability in the occurrence of ice cover on lakes in the Drawskie Lakeland in the hydrological years 1984–2022 based on satellite data from Landsat missions 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. The range of occurrence of ice cover was determined based on the value of the Normalised Difference Snow Index (NDSI) and blue spectral band ( ρ λ b l u e ). The determination of ice cover extent adopted ρ λ b l u e   values from 0.033 to 0.120 as the threshold values. The analysis covered 67 lakes with an area from 0.07 to 18.71 km2. A total of 53 images were analysed, 14 and 39 out of which showed full and partial ice cover, respectively. The cluster analysis permitted the designation of two groups of lakes characterised by an approximate range of ice cover. The obtained results were analysed in the context of the morphometric parameters of the lakes. It was evidenced that the range of the ice cover on lakes is determined by the surface area of the lakes; their mean and maximum depth, volume, length, and width; and the height of the location above sea level. The results of analyses of the spatial range of ice cover in subsequent scenes allowed for the preparation of maps of probability of ice cover occurrence that permit the complete determination of its variability within each of the lakes. Monitoring of the spatial variability in ice cover within individual lakes as well as in reference to lakes not subject to traditional observations offers new research possibilities in many scientific disciplines focused on these ecosystems. Based on cartographic materials, three lakes drained in the previous centuries have been reconstructed. It was found that by restoring them to their original state their total surface area would rise by 140 ha. Knowing the water surface level, determined on the basis of the range of peat soils and contour lines, the author reconstructed the bathymetric plans of the lakes. This, in turn, allowed a determination of the volume of water stored in their basins. It amounted to ca. 2.5 million m3. The approach adopted in the paper draws attention to an important element, i.e. to lakes which no longer exist in Poland and which have disappeared as a result of hydrotechnical works. Their restoration to their original state could become an important link in water retention and delaying the land phase of the water cycle. Activities aimed at retaining water in reception basins are carried out in Poland, among others, through the small retention program. Within this project, facilities such as artificial storage reservoirs are being built. In the light of the foregoing, before making a decision to build such a reservoir, it is worth considering the possibility to restore the natural components of the environment, which is more justifiable, both from the point of view of subsequent functioning of the environment and economic factors.

In the work, medium-scale topographic maps from the first half of the 20th century and aerial photographs from the first decade of the 21st century were used to determine the rate of overgrowing of lakes. A comparison of results for lakes located in different parts of Poland demonstrated that the process of proliferation of emergent plants dominated - such a situation was recorded for 14 out of the 15 lakes analysed in the work. The calculated average overgrowing rate for all the lakes in the years 1945-2010 was 0.4 ha yr-1. Lake Karaś (1.83 ha yr-1) and Lake Oświn (1.2 ha yr-1) were characterized by the highest overgrowing rates. Moreover, the work presents an attempt at discovering the factors which determine the scale of the lake overgrowing process. To this end, the main lake parameters were analysed and it was concluded that the rate of overgrowing of lakes was influenced, inter alia, by water level fluctuations and the shape and depth of a given lake. However, each lake should be treated as an individual object which responds to the processes occurring in its environment in a unique way.
