Imaging the internal architecture of fast-vibrating structures at micrometer scale and kilohertz frequencies poses great challenges for numerous applications, including the study of biological oscillators, mechanical testing of materials, and process engineering. Over the past decade, X-ray microtomography with retrospective gating has shown very promising advances in meeting these challenges. However, breakthroughs are still expected in acquisition and reconstruction procedures to keep improving the spatiotemporal resolution, and study the mechanics of fast-vibrating multiscale structures. Thereby, this works aims to improve this imaging technique by minimising streaking and motion blur artefacts through the optimisation of experimental parameters. For that purpose, we have coupled a numerical approach relying on tomography simulation with vibrating particles with known and ideal 3D geometry (micro-spheres or fibres) with experimental campaigns. These were carried out on soft composites, imaged in synchrotron X-ray beamlines while oscillating up to 400 Hz, thanks to a custom-developed vibromechanical device. This approach yields homogeneous angular sampling of projections and gives reliable predictions of image quality degradation due to motion blur. By overcoming several technical and scientific barriers limiting the feasibility and reproducibility of such investigations, we provide guidelines to enhance gated-CT 4D imaging for the analysis of heterogeneous, high-frequency oscillating materials. Currently, the development of renewable energy products (RES) encourages the search for innovative solutions that take into account key criteria from the point of view of their sustainable development. Despite efforts in this area, there is a lack of approaches and tools to support this process. Therefore, the aim of the research was to develop a decision-making model supporting eco-innovation in products based on the key criteria of sustainable development: quality (customer satisfaction with use), environmental impact in the life cycle (LCA), and the cost of investment incurred in the product development. The functioning of the model was based on the following factors: (i) obtaining the voice of customers (VoC) and processing it into product criteria as part of the development of alternative production solutions (prototypes), (ii) prospective quality assessment and subsequent life cycle assessment of prototypes, (iii) cost analysis taking into account both quality and environmental criteria, (iv) interpretation of results and search for eco-innovative product solutions. Development decision-making is additionally supported by techniques implemented in the model, e.g., the CRITIC method, the LCA method with Ecoinvent database in OpenLCA, the CEA method, and the morphology method. The model was illustrated and tested for photovoltaic (PV) panels, after which a global sensitivity analysis was performed in Statistica. The test results showed that the main factor that influenced the PV development decisions was the investment cost, followed by quality (customer satisfaction) and then environmental impact in LCA. The objective of this investigation was: (i) to develop a model that supports sustainable product development, considering the quality aspect and the environmental impact in the product life cycle, and (ii) to establish a framework to select the proportion of the share of these aspects during product development decisions. This research concentrates on achieving products that meet customer demand and have environmentally friendly life cycles. It also supports the implementation of design activities at an early stage of product development, positioning the share of quality in relation to environmental impact. The model is based on creating hypothetical prototypes of current products, and this approach concentrated on aggregating the quality (customer satisfaction) with life cycle environmental impacts (as in ISO 14040). The model was developed in five main stages, including: (i) defining product prototypes according to the modifications of quality criteria most desired by customers, (ii) assessing the quality of prototypes according to the Q quality index, (iii) prospective assessment of the environmental impacts of the life cycles of prototypes according to the LCA environmental index, (iv) methodical integration of the above-mentioned indicators into one quality and environmental indicator QLCA, and (v) analysis of possible production solutions and setting the direction of product development, taking into account both quality and environmental aspects. This research was extended with a sensitivity analysis of the QLCA indicator, after which a framework for selecting the proportion of the Q and LCA indicator's share in product development decisions was established. The originality of this research is the ability of the developed model to facilitate eco-innovative product design and improvements while also selecting the share of qualitative and environmental aspects needed to develop sustainable products. The results provide a dynamic and effective tool for manufacturing companies; mainly designers and managers during qualitative and environmental prototyping of products commonly used by customers. The sustainability of products remains a challenge, mainly due to the lack of consistent approaches for simultaneously taking into account the key criteria of the concept in the process. This research aims to develop an eco-innovative QLCA method to create new product solutions that integrate quality (customer satisfaction) and environmental impact assessment throughout the product life cycle. The QLCA method includes: (i) product prototyping according to quality and environmental criteria; (ii) prospective assessment of the quality of prototypes, taking into account customer requirements; (iii) prospective life cycle assessment of product prototypes using a cradle-to-grave approach in accordance with ISO 14040; and (iv) setting the direction of product development while taking into account the fulfilment of customer expectations and the need to care for the environment throughout the product life cycle. Owing to the lack of previous research in this area, as well as the popularity of photovoltaic (PV) panels in reducing greenhouse gases, an illustration was obtained and test of the method was carried out on the example of silicon photovoltaic panel modules (Crystalline Si PV Module). In accordance with the adopted assumptions, the results of the QLCA method test showed that the modelled PV prototypes will, in most cases, be satisfactory for customers, but they still require improvement actions to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions throughout their life cycle. These activities should be consistent so as to achieve quality that satisfies customers. The development of materials and the products made from them should respond to new challenges posed by market changes and also by climate change. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to develop a method that supports the sustainable development of materials and the products made from them based on an aggregated indicator of quality and environmental load in the life cycle (QLCA). The testing and illustration of the QLCA method included a passenger car tyre and nine prototypes. These prototypes were described using eight quality criteria: season, class, size of the load index, speed index, rolling, adhesion, and external noise. Then, customer expectations regarding the importance of the criteria and satisfaction with the indicators in the current and modified states were obtained. Based on the customer assessment, the quality indicators of the prototypes were assessed. This assessment was supported by the weighted sum model (WSM) and the entropy method. Then, life cycle assessment for the reference tyre was performed using the Ecoinvent database in the OpenLCA program. LCA indicators were modelled for other prototypes, taking into account quality changes. As a result of the verification of the method, an aggregated QLCA indicator was estimated, based on which it was possible to select the most favourable (qualitatively and environmentally) prototype out of nine. This was the P4 prototype (QLCA = 0.57). The next position in the ranking was taken by P7 (QLCA = 0.43). Modelling real processes often results in several suitable models. In order to be able to distinguish, or discriminate, which model best represents a phenomenon, one is interested, e.g., in so-called T-optimal designs. These consist of the (design) points from a generally continuous design space at which the models deviate most from each other under the condition that they are best fitted to those points. Thus, the T-criterion represents a bi-level optimization problem, which can be transferred into a semi-infinite one but whose solution is very unstable or time consuming for non-linear models and non-convex lower- and upper-level problems. If one considers only a finite number of possible design points, a numerically well tractable linear semi-infinite optimization problem arises. Since this is only an approximation of the original model discrimination problem, we propose an algorithm which alternately and adaptively refines discretizations of the parameter as well as of the design space and, thus, solves a sequence of linear semi-infinite programs. We prove convergence of our method and its subroutine and show on the basis of discrimination tasks from process engineering that our approach is stable and can outperform the known methods. While there are software tools available for helping to conduct life cycle assessment (LCA), such as OpenLCA, these tools lack integration with process design, simulation, and optimization software. As LCA has a critical role in sustainable product design, this paper presents a platform called EMSO_OLCA, which integrates the LCA provided by OpenLCA into the Environment for Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization (EMSO). EMSO_OLCA incorporates a database of environmental impact assessment methodologies from OpenLCA and aligns with the principles of LCA outlined in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Validation tests were conducted to compare the results obtained by the LCA of sugarcane ethanol using OpenLCA and EMSO_OLCA, revealing a high level of agreement. The average relative error was 0.045%, indicating a negligible discrepancy between the tools. Moreover, it took only 0.3 s for the calculation, which is desirable for use with process system engineering tools. A second case study was applied to combined steam and electricity production from the combustion of sugarcane bagasse and straw in a combined heat and power system. The results show the integration of LCA with simulation and sensitivity analysis tools, thus supporting sustainable decision-making processes. According to survey data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, from 2011 to 2022, the total output value of China's construction industry showed an increasing trend year by year. From 2018 to 2021, infrastructure investment has always maintained a positive growth, indicating that the current construction industry is in a rapid development stage. In order to improve the development quality of the construction industry as much as possible, it is of great significance to develop the whole Process engineering consulting service model. The quality evaluation of whole process engineering consulting service modes is MAGDM. The single-valued neutrosophic sets (SVNSs) is useful tool to cope with uncertain information during the quality evaluation of whole process engineering consulting service modes. In this paper, the single-valued neutrosophic number combined TOPSIS (SVNN-CTOPSIS) model based on single-valued neutrosophic number Hamming distances (SVNNHD) and single-valued neutrosophic number Euclidean distance (SVNNED) is formed to cope with the MAGDM. The CRITIC model is utilized to obtain the weight numbers in light with the SVNNHD and SVNNED under SVNSs. Finally, numerical example and comparative analysis for quality evaluation of whole process engineering consulting service modes is utilized to verify SVNN-CTOPSIS model. The main contributions of this study are formed: (1) the CRITIC model is formed to obtain the weight numbers in light with SVNNHD and SVNNED; (2) the SVNN-CTOPSIS model is formed in light with SVNNHD and SVNNED under SVNNs; (3) Finally, numerical example and comparative analysis for quality evaluation of whole process engineering consulting service modes is employed to verify SVNN-CTOPSIS model. In this research, the levels of safety, health, and environmental risks in a building stone processing company (BSPC) have been identified using the integrated approach of the EFMEA (Environmental Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and the William Fine method, along with the TOPSIS technique for prioritizing organizational safety layers, examining potential incidents, and enhancing organizational efficiency. To achieve this, data and risk assessment information were first collected and evaluated, and then, with the formation of an expert task force, brainstorming sessions were held to identify and analyze environmental risks in the production process using the EFMEA technique. Additionally, with the assistance of the William Fine method, safety and health risks in the production process were identified and examined. In the next step, the costs of corrective actions were calculated, and the results obtained from the tables of both EFMEA and William Fine techniques were combined, and decisions were made regarding risks with high and very high levels. Subsequently, using TOPSIS, protective layers were prioritized based on two criteria: cost and time. Following the risk assessment using the EFMEA method, four risks were classified as high-risk, nine risks as medium-risk, and two risks as low-risk. Subsequently, employing the William Fine technique, a total of 41 hazards were evaluated across five worksheets. 5% of the hazards were categorized as very high-risk, 19% as high-risk, 27% as medium-risk, and 49% of the evaluated hazards were classified as low-risk. Ultimately, the results obtained from the integration of the William Fine and EFMEA techniques categorized two risks as very high-risk, 12 risks as high-risk, 20 risks as medium-risk, and 22 risks as low-risk. Furthermore, working at heights was selected as one of the risks with high-risk, and protective layers and control measures were proposed and examined. The use of helmets, shoes, harnesses, and the establishment of a safety platform, considering both time and cost criteria, is the first priority for controlling risks in working at heights activity. Plastic waste is an environmental challenge, but also presents a biotechnological opportunity as a unique carbon substrate. With modern biotechnological tools, it is possible to enable both recycling and upcycling. To realize a plastics bioeconomy, significant intrinsic barriers must be overcome using a combination of enzyme, strain, and process engineering. This article highlights advances, challenges, and opportunities for a variety of common plastics. The way we generate and treat plastic waste is a key consideration in the transition from a take-make-waste model to a truly circular economy. Using different interaction channels within open innovation partnerships holds the potential to enhance the chance of success in production sectors. However, our comprehension of how open innovation partnerships are affected by varying combinations of interaction channels, and how this corelates with their level of open innovation output, remains limited. There are discrepancies in the current literature regarding the individual and combined effects of open innovation interaction channels. Our study aims to resolve these inconsistencies by using a configurational perspective, which allows for the identification of multiple successful pathways. Employing fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to a dataset of European open innovation partnerships in production sectors, we uncover specific combinations of interaction channels that explain high levels of innovation outcomes. Subsequently, we distinguish between two successful pathways. Notably, we observe that the relationship between interaction channels is causally complex, high engagement in open innovation may not guarantee favorable innovation outcomes. This finding highlights the intricate causal dynamics at play. Tracer study is one of the continuous quality improvement tools for curriculum development. The graduates are invited to answer the tracer form to determine their employability. Since the Manufacturing Engineering program in Bulacan State University (BuLSU) is the youngest engineering program, there is minimal data on graduates available, especially on the details of their first jobs, such as the first job related to the program, time taken to land their first job, gross monthly salary, and learning competencies. The demographic profile of the manufacturing engineering graduates from 2015 to 2019 is preserved and remains strictly confidential for the safety of their identification. Correspondingly, the study applied a cross-sectional retrospective survey method. Moreover, 67.41% of manufacturing engineering graduates responded. The employment rate of manufacturing engineering graduates was 93.38%, whereas regular or permanent in their current employment was 84.40%. Furthermore, data show that they are employed within less than a month, 50.97% of responses. Lastly, the primary learning competency that manufacturing engineering graduates consider is critical thinking skills, with a response rate of 86.11%, followed by problem-solving skills, with 81.94% responses, while third was communication skills, with a rate of 78.08%. Equipment integrity is an essential aspect of process engineering. Design guidelines facilitate the design and production of safe-to-operate and economic devices. Thin-walled, slit-shaped modules form a subgroup of process engineering devices made via additive manufacturing (AM). Being subject to internal pressure, they have lacked design guidelines until now. We derived a user-centered calculation model for such modules with regular internal structures. It was validated with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and practical pressure tests for which the modules were manufactured additively. The performance of the calculation could be confirmed, and a design graph was derived. Slit-shaped modules with appropriate internal structures can withstand high pressure at a minimum wall thickness, and they are efficiently fabricated. These structures, being pins, fins, lattice, or heat transfer enhancing fluid-guiding elements (FGEs), occupied approximately 10% of the modules' internal volume. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Succinic acid (SA) is one of the top platform chemicals with huge applications in diverse sectors. The presence of two carboxylic acid groups on the terminal carbon atoms makes SA a highly functional molecule that can be derivatized into a wide range of products. The biological route for SA production is a cleaner, greener, and promising technological option with huge potential to sequester the potent greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. The recycling of renewable carbon of biomass (an indirect form of CO2), along with fixing CO2 in the form of SA, offers a carbon-negative SA manufacturing route to reduce atmospheric CO2 load. These attractive attributes compel a paradigm shift from fossil-based to microbial SA manufacturing, as evidenced by several commercial-scale bio-SA production in the last decade. The current review article scrutinizes the existing knowledge and covers SA production by the most efficient SA producers, including several bacteria and yeast strains. The review starts with the biochemistry of the major pathways accumulating SA as an end product. It discusses the SA production from a variety of pure and crude renewable sources by native as well as engineered strains with details of pathway/metabolic, evolutionary, and process engineering approaches for enhancing TYP (titer, yield, and productivity) metrics. The review is then extended to recent progress on separation technologies to recover SA from fermentation broth. Thereafter, SA derivatization opportunities via chemo-catalysis are discussed for various high-value products, which are only a few steps away. Complex fluid–solid systems generally exist in process engineering. The cognition of complex flow systems depends on numerical and experimental methods. The computational fluid dynamics–discrete phase method simulation based on coarsening technology has potential application prospects in industrial-scale equipment. This review outlines the computational fluid dynamics–discrete phase method and its application in several typical types of process engineering. In the process research, more attention is paid to the dense condition and multiphase flow. Furthermore, the CFD-DPM and its extension method for comprehensive hydrodynamics modeling are introduced. This paper aims to develop an integrated Quality–Cost–Environmental (QCE) indicator for the selection of photovoltaic panels (PVps) offered to customers, considering the following criteria: (i) quality satisfaction; (ii) cost-effectiveness; and (iii) environmental impact throughout the life cycle. The proposed QCE indicator was developed within a framework that incorporated an FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process), cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA), and life cycle assessment (LCA). The model test confirmed its effectiveness in choosing a PVp which combines environmental friendliness throughout its entire life cycle with satisfactory quality and a reasonable purchase price for customers. Taking an integrated approach towards production, maintenance, and control in manufacturing systems is crucial due to the profound impact of their interconnections. Investigating these aspects in isolation may lead to infeasible solutions. This research focuses on the real-time and autonomous decision-making process concerning joint production planning, maintenance, and quality problem in a stochastic deteriorating production system with limited maintenance activities. Formulating the problem as a continuous semi-Markov decision process accounts for the complexities of the real production system and the occurrence of events over an uneven and continuous period. While dynamic programming is a common tool for addressing joint optimization problems, it has limitations, such as the curse of dimensionality. In this study, the optimal policy of the decision-maker agent is obtained by the goal-directed machine learning method called (R-SMART) and agent-based modeling. To the author's knowledge, the proposed approach is novel, and there is little research on such an implementation of the joint optimization problem. The quality of the optimal policy is evaluated through heuristic and simulation-optimization methods in various scenarios. For future internal combustion engines, driven by regenerative fuels, efficiency is more important than ever. One approach to reduce the losses inside the piston cylinder unit (PCU) is to improve the alignment of the liner and the piston. Therefore, a cylinder liner with a free form was developed at the Institute of Technical Combustion (ITV) of the Leibniz University Hannover which compensates radial and linear deformations along the stroke. The layout is based on a FEM simulation. The liner was manufactured by the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) of Leibniz University of Hannover with a novel turn-milling process. The liner was investigated on the heavy-duty Floating-Liner engine of ITV with a displacement of 1991 ccm and a bore diameter of 130 mm. The experimental results show improvement in the friction losses over the whole engine map in the range of 9% and up to 17.3% compared to a serial liner. Sealing efficiency could be improved up to 28.8%, depending on the operational point. Overall, the investigation aims for lower fuel consumption which would in result fewer emissions. Sustainable product development requires combining aspects, including quality and environmental. This is a difficult task to accomplish. Therefore, procedures are being sought to combine these aspects in the process of product improvement. Therefore, the objective of the investigation was to develop a procedure that supports the integration of quality-level indicators and life-cycle assessment (LCA) to determine the direction of product improvement. The procedure involves determining the quality indicators based on the expectations of the customer, which are subsequently processed using the formalised scoring method (PS). A life-cycle assessment index is determined for the main environmental impact criterion. According to the proposed mathematical model, these indicators are aggregated, and this process takes into account their importance in terms of product usefulness and environmental friendliness. Interpretations of the results and the direction of product improvement are from the results obtained from the modified IPA model (importance–performance analysis). The procedure is used in the verification of product prototypes, wherein the proposed approach, and its test, was carried out for a self-cooling beverage can (and its alternatives) with a "chill-on-demand" system, which is a technology supporting rapid cooling on demand. The life-cycle assessment was carried out to assess the carbon footprint, which is crucial for activities to reduce greenhouse gases. The direction of improvement of this product was shown to concern the selection of transport means, the reduction of energy use in the production phase, or the change of the method of opening the can. What is original is the proposal of a procedure for integrating the quality indicator and the life-cycle assessment indicator, taking into account the key environmental burden. Sustainable development has caused companies to try to adapt their activities to changing customer expectations, but also to climate change. This poses a particular challenge for SMEs from developing countries. Therefore, the objective of the investigation was to analyse the qualitative-environmental aspects of the improvement of the products in SMEs from the countries of the Visegrad Group (V4). The results analysed constituted a research sample of 379 companies in the electrical machinery industry (machine processing industry), which were obtained in the period from March to September 2023 through a targeted survey. The area of analysis included, e.g.: (i) environmental issues of selected areas of activity, (ii) measures of environmental activity, and (iii) selected qualitative-environmental aspects. Analyses of the research results were carried out using quantitative and qualitative analyses, including comparative analyses, e.g. regarding the implementation status of ISO 14001, EMAS, and ISO 9001. These techniques were used: word cloud, ANOVA test and Mann Whitney U test at the significance level of α=0.05. It has been shown that SMEs in V4 countries focus their activities on improving products to improve their quality rather than limiting their negative environmental impact. Originality of the research is the identification of significant differences in the qualitative-environmental aspects undertaken when SMEs from V4 countries. Research results may contribute to the development activities more effective and coherent in the V4 countries, to achieve a stable and competitive advantage on the market as part of the qualitative and environmental improvement of the products. The research results and the conclusions drawn from them can be used by scientists and practitioners to shape the target states of enterprises in the period of increasing involvement in proecological ideas.

Chemical leaching of coals would be required to produce cleaner coals for some special applications where physical beneficiation may not be effective enough. This would also help in recovering Li and rare earth metals besides in the sequestration of CO2. About 20 Indian coals having complexly distributed moderate to high ash contents were sequentially treated with various alkali–acid such as NaOH-HCl, HF, HCl, HCl-HF, and NaOH-HCl-HF leaching. This aimed to establish and design the best stepwise sequential process for the highest degree of demineralisation through a chemical leaching process. Kinetics and process intensification studies were carried out. More than 80% demineralisation of Madhaipur and Neemcha coals was observed using the best sequential treatment designed presently. The repeated stepwise treatment of the alkali and the acid was also studied, which was found to significantly enhance the degree of demineralisation of coals. The integrated process of alkali–acid leaching followed by solvent extraction (Organo-refining) and vice versa of the treated coal was also studied for producing cleaner coals. Biogels (hydrogels, oleogels, and bigels) are structured systems used as delivery vehicles for bioactive substances. The objective of this study was to provide an updated view of green materials used as biogels, discussing the different aspects related to their formulation. An overview of the application possibilities of these gels in different areas, such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and medicine, is reported. Furthermore, an evaluation of the profile of studies using biogels was carried out in the last decades (1980–2023), showing the advances in knowledge about these materials in different application domains. Additive manufacturing technologies collectively refer to a set of layer-wise deposition methods that typically rely on CAD-CAM approaches for obtaining products with a complex shape/geometry and high precision and reliability. If the additive manufacturing of polymers is relatively easy and scalable due to the low temperatures needed to obtain processable inks, using similar technologies to fabricate ceramic products is indeed more challenging and expensive but, on the other hand, allows for obtaining high-quality results that would not be achievable through conventional methods. Furthermore, the implementation of additive manufacturing allows for the addressing of some important concerns related to the environment and sustainability, including the minimization of resource depletion and waste production/disposal. Specifically, additive manufacturing technologies can provide improvements in energy consumption and production costs, besides obtaining less waste material and less CO2 emissions, which are all key points in the context of the circular economy. After providing an overview of the additive manufacturing methods which are specifically applied to ceramics, this review presents the sustainability elements of these processing strategies, with a focus on both current and future benefits. The paucity of specific available studies in the literature—which are included and discussed in this review—suggests that the research on additive manufacturing sustainability in the field of ceramic materials is in the preliminary stage and that more relevant work still deserves to be carried out in the future to explore this fascinating field at the boundary among ceramics science/technology, production engineering and waste management. Blue denim, a billion-dollar industry, is currently dyed with indigo in an unsustainable process requiring harsh reducing and alkaline chemicals. Forming indigo directly in the yarn through indican (indoxyl-β-glucoside) is a promising alternative route with mild conditions. Indican eliminates the requirement for reducing agent while still ending as indigo, the only known molecule yielding the unique hue of blue denim. However, a bulk source of indican is missing. Here, we employ enzyme and process engineering guided by techno-economic analyses to develop an economically viable drop-in indican synthesis technology. Rational engineering of PtUGT1, a glycosyltransferase from the indigo plant, alleviated the severe substrate inactivation observed with the wildtype enzyme at the titers needed for bulk production. We further describe a mild, light-driven dyeing process. Finally, we conduct techno-economic, social sustainability, and comparative life-cycle assessments. These indicate that the presented technologies have the potential to significantly reduce environmental impacts from blue denim dyeing with only a modest cost increase. Conventional blue denim dyeing has both environmental and health-related consequences. Here, Bidart et al. use enzyme engineering to develop a viable method for the bulk production of indican and demonstrate dying processes which could significantly reduce the negative consequences of this billion-dollar industry. The advancement of quality and environmentally sustainable materials and products made from them has improved significantly over the last few years. However, a research gap is the lack of a developed model that allows for the simultaneous analysis of quality and environmental criteria in the life-cycle assessment (LCA) for the selection of materials in newly designed products. Therefore, the objective of the research was to develop a model that supports the prediction of the environmental impact and expected quality of materials and products made from them according to the design solution scenarios considering their LCA. The model implements the GRA method and environmental impact analysis according to the LCA based on ISO 14040. The model test was carried out for light passenger vehicles of BEV with a lithium-ion battery (LiFePO4) and for ICEV. The results indicated a relatively comparable level of quality, but in the case of the environmental impact throughout the life-cycle, the predominant amount of CO2 emissions in the use phase for combustion vehicles. The originality of the developed model to create scenarios of design solutions is created according to which the optimal direction of their development in terms of quality and environment throughout LCA can be predicted. Discussion over the years regarding the quality of newly graduated engineers in Brazil has concluded that there are gaps between learning and market expectations. Analyzing the current scenario, the Ministry of Education (MEC) has approved new national curriculum guidelines that emphasize skills development and the adoption of active methodologies. The aim is to develop students as protagonists of their own learning. One of these methodologies is game-based learning (GBL), which utilizes games for educational purposes to integrate theory and practice. GBL simulates reality and presents concepts in a playful way, resulting in greater student engagement and interest. However, research shows that a lack of knowledge and difficulty accessing such games are barriers to implementing this methodology. Previous research has focused on the development of serious game metadata (SGM), the establishment of controlled vocabularies, and the identification of educational games targeting production engineering (PE). The authors of the present paper developed a database focused on the disciplines and content covered in production engineering courses. The paper describes the database and its aims to: (a) increase the use of games in the teaching-learning process; (b) make the process more effective; and (c) prepare better professionals. Advancing the adoption of lithography‐based ceramic manufacturing (LCM) for structural applications requires understanding how processing parameters impact the printed material's flaw population and failure behavior. Exploratory studies on LCM alumina have mixed results regarding print parameter influence on strength and past fractography is insufficiently complete to guide process engineering for better performance. We perform four‐point flexural strength characterization and comprehensive fractography of LCM alumina to evaluate the impact of processing parameters including orientation, layer height, and curing energy on strength‐limiting defects. Characteristic strengths for fully dense, high‐purity LCM alumina are near or above conventionally processed alumina within the manufacturable range of print parameters studied in this work. Conversely, the Weibull modulus varies greatly (m = 3.8–19.5) depending on print parameters. The dominant strength‐controlling defects all have a printing‐based origin, but vary between delamination, surface texture, and bubbles depending on print orientation. Lowest performance results from alignment of the print axis along the bar length, yielding a low Weibull modulus associated with weak delamination flaws that are not appreciably improved by varying print layer height or curing energy. Feasibility checking is a step in manufacturing system engineering for verifying the normalization and effectiveness of a manufacturing system associated with a specific configuration of resources and processes. It enables factory operators to predict problems before operational time, thus preventing equipment and machinery accidents and reducing labor waste in physically organizing the shop floor. In Industry 4.0, feasibility checking becomes even more critical since emerging challenges, such as mass personalization, require reconfiguring work cells quickly and flexibly on demand. Regarding this need, digital twin technologies have emerged as an ideal candidate for practicing feasibility checking. Indeed, they are tools used to implement digital representations of manufacturing entities that can constitute a digital environment and context. Factory operators can test a manufacturing process within a digital environment in different contexts before the execution with physical resources. This approach currently receives significant attention from the manufacturing community; however, there is still a lack of sharing experiences to implement it. Thus, this paper contributes a methodology to engineer a digital environment and context for a manufacturing work cell using AAS digital twins and physics-based 3D digital twins technologies. Technically, this methodology is a specific case of N-DTs, a general methodology for engineering heterogeneous digital twins. The product assembly line case study, also presented in this paper, is a successful experiment applying the above contributions. The two methodologies and the case study can be helpful references for both public and private sectors to deploy their feasibility-checking frameworks and deal with heterogeneous digital twins in general. L-cysteine is a proteogenic amino acid with many applications in the pharmaceutical, food, animal feed, and cosmetic industries. Due to safety and environmental issues in extracting L-cysteine from animal hair and feathers, the fermentative production of L-cysteine offers an attractive alternative using renewable feedstocks. Strategies to improve microbial production hosts like Pantoea ananatis, Corynebacterium glutamicum, Pseudomonas sp., and Escherichia coli are summarized. Concerning the metabolic engineering strategies, the overexpression of feedback inhibition-insensitive L-serine O-acetyltransferase and weakening the degradation of L-cysteine through the removal of L-cysteine desulfhydrases are crucial adjustments. The overexpression of L-cysteine exporters is vital to overcome the toxicity caused by intracellular accumulating L-cysteine. In addition, we compiled the process engineering aspects for the bioproduction of L-cysteine. Utilizing the energy-efficient sulfur assimilation pathway via thiosulfate, fermenting cheap carbon sources, designing scalable, fed-batch processes with individual feedings of carbon and sulfur sources, and implementing efficient purification techniques are essential for the fermentative production of L-cysteine on an industrial scale. Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance applications receive ongoing scientific attention in production technology. Larger companies, especially machine and component manufacturers, already offer related products. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular show interest in developing and offering solutions in this market themselves to gain economic advantages, to improve resource utilization of their machines or to be able to offer these advantages to their own customers. In the development process, however, they often encounter problems already in the digitization of the machines. The first hurdle is to obtain an analysis-capable data set. This is due to the fact that common and established general data mining development process models, such as CRISP-DM, do not focus on production technology, causing difficulties for engineers during deployment. A problem with existing process models is the limited practicality in the engineering domain due to restricted adaptability. In a previous paper, a guideline for engineers for data mining suitable digitization of production machines was developed in order to solve these problems. The related results were provided in the context of a project for condition monitoring of mixing machines. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to components of a 5-axis CNC milling machine in three different monitoring use cases. A complete workflow is presented, including effect analysis, sensor selection, formulation of predictive scenarios, data preparation, training of machine learning algorithms and vizualization. This paper demonstrates the application of a fully automated machine learning (ML) pipeline on time series data from the domain of production engineering. The workflow aims to streamline the machine learning (ML) process and reduce manual effort by incorporating automated machine learning (AutoML) and automated featurization techniques. A comparative study is created to evaluate the proposed workflow against existing state-of-the-art methods using six datasets from production engineering, five widely used ones and a newly presented one. The study compares the performance of the automated workflow with the manual data mining process described in the literature. The results lead to two main conclusions: first, an automated featurization process cannot match the performance of manual feature generation, but still delivers good results without requiring manual work. Second, if the manually generated features are used, AutoML can outperform the manual process in solving the combined problem of algorithm selection and hyperparameter optimization, leading to better prediction results. The presented approach serves as a useful reference for other methods, showing the practicality of baseline workflow without human bias. The intense competition in the field of new shipbuilding business today requires shipyards to increase their productivity in terms of quality, cost, on-time delivery performance, and flexibility. Product-oriented Work Breakdown Structure (PWBS)-based steel ship production technology has played a vital role in the shipyard's success in competition. A block and modular assembly approach using the PWBS method was prepared to guide shipyards. This paper presents a study on the technology capability of four selected Indonesian medium-sized shipyards and one leading shipyard as the benchmark in using the PWBS method. The technology capability in shipbuilding is measured using the technometric assessment model by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), which consists of four indicators; technoware, humanware, infoware, and orgaware. The results show that the shipyards' Technology Coefficient Contribution (TCC) is between 0.5 and 0.7 (TCC maximum 1.0). This value indicates that the four shipyards in this case study are capable of building ships based on PWBS method. However, some aspects have to be improved to ensure the method is implemented properly, including: better design software that could prepare comprehensive production engineering documents, production lane with more automation, and more crane capacity. Of course, large additional investments must be supported by continuous orders for new ships with relatively the same type and size of ships, so that they are more productive and gradually able to compete in the global market. The purpose of this paper was to determine the specifics of the placement of dumps during the development of upland deposits and to develop recommendations to improve quality management in industrial and manufacturing engineering during the development of mineral resource deposits. As a result of the performed research, it was proved that the placement of dumps during the development of upland deposits requires more calculations for planning and ensuring stability than for dumps located on a horizontal surface. Assessment of the stability of dumps on the slope is a key component of ensuring the safety of dumps. One of the main factors affecting the stability of dumps on an inclined base is the bearing capacity of the base. When planning the area for the dump, the bearing capacity and strength of the base rocks are calculated. The article describes a method for determining the loading of the dump depending on the bearing capacity of the base of the dump of overburden rocks. The features of the placement of overburden dumps during the development of upland deposits are revealed, taking into account the planning of the base for the dump, depending on the strength characteristics of the base and the slope angle. The theoretical significance of the results obtained is due to their rethinking of the essence of the development of mineral resource deposits from the position of quality management in industrial and manufacturing engineering. The practical significance of the authors' developments is that the authors' methodology of determining the load of the dump depending on the carrying capacity of the base dump of overburden rocks will allow improving quality management in industrial and manufacturing engineering of the development of mineral resource deposits. This research aims to analyze how the study of mathematical modelling in the discipline of Operational Research (OP) has been applied in the Production Engineering courses in three higher educational institutions in the Northeast of Brazil. The study owns qualitative approach as from a case study. The theoretical reference is based principally on the authors Hillier and Lieberman (2013) who developed the concept and purpose of the discipline of OP and Saviani (1996) which contextualized the issue of problem-situation. As sustainability in manufacturing becomes increasingly important, numerous concepts, new technologies, and use cases for improving and assessing sustainability in manufacturing environments are emerging. However, there is a lack of a framework that shows an easy way to identify relevant topics for action in the field of sustainable manufacturing. The purpose of this publication is to provide a structure for the topic of sustainable manufacturing, to contribute to the understanding and classification of ongoing activities, and to identify starting points for future research and development. Within this publication, an extensive literature review is presented. A framework for sustainable manufacturing that acts as a call for action for academia and operations management in the industry alike is derived from this literature review. The framework is intended for Western countries, as, within this framework, aspects such as the elimination of enslaved persons and child labor in production are assumed to be implemented through legal regulations already. Details of the framework are elaborated, and its application is discussed. Internal audits are a requirement of point 9.2 of the ISO 45001 standard. They are a very good tool to improve the management system, but also the entire organization. Audits and the auditors conducting them should be improved. Therefore, this article aims to develop a model for evaluating internal auditors of occupational health and safety management systems according to ISO 45001. The model includes both the guidelines of the ISO 19011 standard and expert knowledge resulting from experience in assessing auditors. The following tools are adequately integrated: the SMART(-ER) method, brainstorming (BM), and control sheets. The result is the estimated quality of the auditor’s work. Rankings created using this model cannot be used to punish auditors; the model is intended to help chart an improvement path for internal auditors. Due to its nature, the model can be used to assess internal auditors in any management system. It can also be modified according to the original solutions in the field of auditing in a given organization.

The development of materials and the products made from them should respond to new challenges posed by market changes and also by climate change. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to develop a method that supports the sustainable development of materials and the products made from them based on an aggregated indicator of quality and environmental load in the life cycle (QLCA). The testing and illustration of the QLCA method included a passenger car tyre and nine prototypes. These prototypes were described using eight quality criteria: season, class, size of the load index, speed index, rolling, adhesion, and external noise. Then, customer expectations regarding the importance of the criteria and satisfaction with the indicators in the current and modified states were obtained. Based on the customer assessment, the quality indicators of the prototypes were assessed. This assessment was supported by the weighted sum model (WSM) and the entropy method. Then, life cycle assessment for the reference tyre was performed using the Ecoinvent database in the OpenLCA program. LCA indicators were modelled for other prototypes, taking into account quality changes. As a result of the verification of the method, an aggregated QLCA indicator was estimated, based on which it was possible to select the most favourable (qualitatively and environmentally) prototype out of nine. This was the P4 prototype (QLCA = 0.57). The next position in the ranking was taken by P7 (QLCA = 0.43). The QLCA method can be used to determine the direction of development of materials and products in terms of their sustainable development.
