ABSTRACT We report on the basic properties of zeolite NaY and potassium supported on NaY (K/NaY) assessed by pyrrole-TPD and MBOH transformation. Pyrrole-TPD revealed that impregnation of zeolite NaY with potassium promoted additional adsorption sites for pyrrole compared to parent zeolite. For zeolite with various potassium loadings, pyrrole adsorbed on K/NaY decreased with increased potassium loading. Reduction in pyrrole adsorption could be due to potassium hindering intrinsic basic sites (lattice oxygen), to oxide of potassium occluding in zeolite cavities restricting access for pyrrole, or to K2O reacting with pyrrole to form nondesorbed pyrrolate anions. On MBOH transformation, potassium almost completely suppressed NaY acid sites while K/NaY basicity increased with potassium loading.

The nature of paraquat adsorption is compared between zeolite NaX and NaY which have the same faujasite structure but different Si/Al ratio, namely 1.2 and 2.2, respectively. The adsorption was proposed to occur via ion exchange and expected to increase with Al content. However, NaX had a lower paraquat adsorption capacity than NaY. The bare and paraquat-containing zeolites (PQX and PQY) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis, magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS) NMR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The presence of adsorbed paraquat was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Paraquat adsorbed in supercages of the zeolites resulting in a decrease of surface area and displacement of sodium cations. Results from 23Na MAS NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that interaction of sodium ions in the cavity of NaX was stronger than that in NaY, making it less exchangeable with paraquat. Adsorption of paraquat and pirimiphos-methyl in water was performed on four adsorbents including montmorillonite (Mt), organoclay (TDA-Mt) from intercalation of Mt with tetradecylammonium chloride, and mesoporous Mt from intragallery templating method (with and without Ti addition). The adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, and transmission electron microscopy. Paraquat adsorption isotherms followed Langmuir model and the adsorption capacity was as follows: TDA-Mt>Mt>mesoporous Ti-Mt>mesoporous Mt. The adsorption mechanism on TDA-Mt and Mt might be via ion exchange. The adsorption on mesoporous samples was on the external surface with negative charge. The presence of Ti enhanced the adsorption capacity. Pirimiphos-methyl adsorbed on negative charge of the external surface of Mt samples. The adsorbed amount increased with the initial concentration due to a strong intermolecular interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is a solid waste containing a high amount of silica (SiO 2 ) and is suitable to utilize as a silica source for synthesizing zeolite NaA. SCBA is typically calcined at high temperatures before silica extraction. The method is not environmentally friendly because it consumes energy and produces CO 2 . This work demonstrates an alternative extraction method of SiO 2 from SCBA by treating it with hydrochloric (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The obtained mixture was separated by paper filter No. 1 (P) and a combination of paper filter and syringe filter (PS). The solution was neutralized by HCl solution, producing silica (SiO 2 -P and SiO 2 -PS) with a purity of 98 wt%. Both SiO 2 samples and SCBA were utilized to synthesize zeolite NaA for CO 2 adsorption. The CO 2 adsorption capacities of NaA-P and NaA-PS were 4.30 and 4.10 mmol g adsorbent -1 , in the same range as commercial NaA. The capacity is influenced by the total basicity of zeolite. The CO 2 adsorption behavior of all samples correlates well with the Toth model. The CO 2 adsorption kinetics agrees well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Overall, this work shows the successful extraction of silica via using a direct NaOH solution, yielding high-purity silica sufficient for synthesizing zeolite NaA, a promising adsorbent of CO 2 ., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) and goethite (α-FeOOH) were synthesized via a hydrothermal approach and utilized as adsorbents for Cr 6+ removal in an aqueous medium. The typical crystal structures of the synthesized Fe 3 O 4 and α-FeOOH were confirmed by XRD and TEM. Fe 3 O 4 in a spherical shape with a surface area of 32 m 2 g -1 was established. While α-FeOOH had a rod-like form with a larger surface area of 84 m 2 g -1 . Cr 6+ removal in an aqueous solution was studied in various conditions to evaluate thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The adsorption isotherms on both adsorbents fit the Langmuir model indicating monolayer adsorption. Fe 3 O 4 showed a better adsorption ability than α-FeOOH even though it had a lower surface area. XAS and XPS analysis strongly evidenced the production of stable Cr 3+ species of Fe (1- x ) Cr x OOH and Fe (3- x ) Cr x O 4 by Cr 6+ reduction and migration processes into the bulk structure. Thus, the existence of stable Cr-species in Fe 3 O 4 structure strongly affected Cr-adsorption ability rather than the surface area of the adsorbent. However, the precipitated Cr 2 O 3 and HCrO 4 - molecules electrostatically adsorbed on the outer surface of α-FeOOH without bulk transformation.
