We present a phenomenological model for the mixing length used in turbulence models. It has the advantage of naturally accounting for the object's geometry while satisfying the standard symmetries of the Navier-Stokes equations. We employ the model to study channel flow and pipe flow. We calibrate the three model parameters to recover the damping in the viscous sub-layer, the log-law of the wall, and the outer region behaviors. Our model compares favorably to friction factor measurements in the pipe flow at high Reynolds numbers and gives analytical predictions of the mixing length for several canonical flows., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The ultimate goal of a sound theory of turbulence in fluids is to close in a rational way the Reynolds equations, namely to express the time averaged turbulent stress tensor as a function of the time averaged velocity field. This closure problem is a deep and unsolved problem of statistical physics whose solution requires to go beyond the assumption of a homogeneous and isotropic state, as fluctuations in turbulent flows are strongly related to the geometry of this flow. This links the dissipation to the space dependence of the average velocity field. Based on the idea that dissipation in fully developed turbulence is by singular events resulting from an evolution described by the Euler equations, it has been recently observed that the closure problem is strongly restricted, and that it implies that the turbulent stress is a non local function (in space) of the average velocity field, an extension of classical Boussinesq theory of turbulent viscosity. The resulting equations for the turbulent stress are derived here in one of the simplest possible physical situation, the turbulent Poiseuille flow between two parallel plates. In this case the integral kernel giving the turbulent stress, as function of the averaged velocity field, takes a simple form leading to a full analysis of the averaged turbulent flow in the limit of a very large Reynolds number. In this limit one has to match a viscous boundary layer, near the walls bounding the flow, and an outer solution in the bulk of the flow. This asymptotic analysis is non trivial because one has to match solution with logarithms. A non trivial and somewhat unexpected feature of this solution is that, besides the boundary layers close to the walls, there is another "inner" boundary layer near the center plane of the flow.

Based on the idea that dissipation in fully developed turbulence is by singular events resulting from an evolution described by the Euler equations, it has been recently observed that the closure problem is strongly restricted, and that it implies that the turbulent stress is a non local function in space of the average velocity field, a kind of extension of classical Boussinesq theory of turbulent viscosity. This leads to rather complex nonlinear integral equation(s) for the time averaged velocity field. This one satisfies some symmetries of the Euler equations. Such symmetries were used by Prandtl and Landau to make various predictions about the shape of the turbulent domain in simple geometries. We explore specifically the case of mixing layer for which the average velocity field only depends on the angle in the wedge behind the splitter plate. This solution yields a pressure difference between the two sides of the splitter which contributes to the lift felt by the plate. Moreover, because of the structure of the equations for the turbulent stress, one can satisfy the Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities, also called the realizability conditions, for this turbulent stress. Such realizability conditions cannot be satisfied with a simple turbulent viscosity.

Dicing soft solids with a sharp knife is quicker and smoother if the blade is sliding rapidly parallel to its edge in addition to the normal squeezing motion. We explain this common observation with a consistent theory suited for soft gels and departing from the standard theories of elastic fracture mechanics developed for a century. The gel is assumed to locally fail when submitted to stresses exceeding a threshold $\sigma_1$. The changes in its structure generate a liquid layer coating the blade and transmitting the stress through viscous forces. The driving parameters are the ratio $U/W$ of the normal to the tangential velocity of the blade, and the characteristic length $\eta W/\sigma_1$, with $\eta$ the viscosity of the liquid. The existence of a maximal value of $U/W$ for a steady regime explains the crucial role of the tangential velocity for slicing biological and other soft materials.

Following the idea that dissipation in turbulence at high Reynolds number is by events singular in space-time and described by solutions of the inviscid Euler equations, we draw the conclusion that in such flows scaling laws should depend only on quantities appearing in the Euler equations. This excludes viscosity or a turbulent length as scaling parameters and constrains drastically possible analytical pictures of this limit. We focus on the law of drag by Newton for a projectile moving quickly in a fluid at rest. Inspired by the Newton's drag force law (proportional to the square of the speed of the moving object in the limit of large Reynolds numbers), which is well verified in experiments when the location of the detachment of the boundary layer is defined, we propose an explicit relationship between Reynolds's stress in the turbulent wake and quantities depending on the velocity field (averaged in time but depending on space), in the form of an integro-differential equation for the velocity which is solved for a Poiseuille flow in a circular pipe.

Starting from the Bogoliubov diagonalization for the Hamiltonian of a weakly interacting Bose gas under the presence of a Bose-Enstein Condensate, we derive the kinetic equation for the Bogoliubov excitations. Without dropping any of the commutators, we find three collisional processes. One of them describes the $1\leftrightarrow2$ interactions between the condensate and the excited atoms. The other two describe the $2\leftrightarrow2$ and $1\leftrightarrow3$ interactions between the excited atoms themselves.

We provide a scenario for a singularity-mediated turbulence based on the self-focusing non-linear Schr\"odinger equation, for which sufficiently smooth initial states leads to blow-up in finite time. Here, by adding dissipation, these singularities are regularized, and the inclusion of an external forcing results in a chaotic fluctuating state. The strong events appear randomly in space and time, making the dissipation rate highly fluctuating. The model shows that: i) dissipation takes place near the singularities only, ii) such intense events are random in space and time, iii) the mean dissipation rate is almost constant as the viscosity varies, and iv) the observation of an Obukhov-Kolmogorov spectrum with a power law dependence together with an intermittent behavior using structure functions correlations, in close correspondence with fluid turbulence., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figues

We revisit the problem on the inner structure of shock waves in simple gases modelized by the Boltzmann kinetic equation. In \cite{pomeau1987shock}, a self-similarity approach was proposed for infinite total cross section resulting from a power law interaction, but this self-similar form does not have finite energy. Motivated by the work of Pomeau, Bobylev and Cercignani started the rigorous study of the solutions of the spatial homogeneous Boltzmann equation, focusing on those which do not have finite energy \cite{bobylev2002self,bobylev2003eternal}. In the present work, we provide a correction to the self-similar form, so that the solutions are more physically sound in the sense that the energy is no longer infinite and that the perturbation brought by the shock does not grow at large distances of it on the cold side in the soft potential case.

The present understanding of supernova explosion of massive stars as a two-step process, with an initial gravitational collapse toward the center of the star followed by an expansion of matter after a bouncing on the core, meets several difficulties. We show that it is not the only possible one: a simple model based on fluid mechanics, catastrophe theory, and stability properties of the equilibrium state shows that one can have also a simultaneous inward/outward motion in the early stage of the instability of the supernova described by a dynamical saddle-center bifurcation. The existence of this simultaneous inward/outward motion is sensitive to the model in such systems with long-range interactions. If a constant temperature is assumed (canonical ensemble), an overall inward motion occurs, but if one imposes with the same equation of state the constraint of energy conservation (microcanonical ensemble) there is an inward velocity field near the center of the star together with an outward velocity field in the rest of the star. We discuss the expansion stage of the remnants away from the collapsed core, and propose a new explanation for the formation of shock waves in the ejecta which differs from the usual Sedov-Taylor self-similar description.

Supernovae explosions of massive stars are nowadays believed to result from a two-step process, with an initial gravitational core collapse followed by an expansion of matter after a bouncing on the core. This scenario meets several difficulties. We show that it is not the only possible one: a simple model based on fluid mechanics and stability properties of the equilibrium state shows that one can have also a simultaneous inward/outward motion in the early stage of the instability of the supernova. This shows up in the slow sweeping across a saddle-center bifurcation found when considering equilibrium states associated to the constraint of energy conservation. We first discuss the weakly nonlinear regime in terms of a Painlev\'e I equation. We then show that the strongly nonlinear regime displays a self-similar behavior of the core collapse. In a recent paper we presented evidence for the occurence of Leray-like singularities with positive Sedov-Taylor exponent $\alpha$ in turbulent flows recorded in Modane's wind tunnel, by looking at simultaneous acceleration and velocity records. Here we use another tool which allows to get other informations on the dynamics of turbulent bursts. We compare the structure functions for velocity and acceleration in the same turbulent flows. This shows the possible contribution of other types of self-similar solutions because this new study shows that statistics is seemingly dominated by singularities with small positive or even negative values of the exponent $\alpha$, that corresponds to "weakly singular" solutions with singular acceleration, and regular velocity. We present several reasons explaining that the exponent $\alpha$ derived from the structure functions curves, may look to be negative.

It is well-known that the circulation of the velocity field of a fluid along a closed material curve is conserved for any solution of the Euler equation. We offer a slightly more explicit proof of that fact than that generally found in the literature. We then rewrite that property in terms of the rescaled variables and functions leading to the Euler-Leray equations and appropriate for studying self-similar solutions. We finally discuss the implications of the conservation of circulation on the existence of such solutions.

A 1934 paper by Leray posed the question of the regularity of solutions of the dynamical equations for incompressible inviscid fluids with smooth initial data. Since there has been many attempts to answer this question. Leray examined the possibility of self-similar solutions becoming singular in finite time at a definite space-time location. We reexamine this question in the light of a thorough analysis of the equations for the self-similar solution in axisymmetric geometries with a dependence on a logarithm of time besides the one due to the transformation to self-similar variables.

Deformations of heavy elastic cylinders with their axis in the direction of earth's gravity field are investigated. The specimens, made of polyacrylamide hydrogels, are attached from their top circular cross section to a rigid plate. An equilibrium configuration results from the interplay between gravity that tends to deform the cylinders downwards under their own weight, and elasticity that resists these distortions. The corresponding steady state exhibits fascinating shapes which are measured with lab-based micro-tomography. For any given initial radius to height ratio, the deformed cylinders are no longer axially symmetric beyond a critical value of a control parameter that depends on the volume force, the height and the elastic modulus: lateral wrinkling hierarchy develops, and holes appear at the bottom surface of the shallowest samples. We show that these patterns are the consequences of elastic instabilities.

A major question in our understanding of the fabric of the world is where the randomness of some quantum phenomena comes from and how to represent it in a rational theory. The statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics made its way progressively since the early days of the theory. We summarize the main historical steps and then we outline how the randomness gains to be depicted by using tools adapted to Markov processes. We consider a model system corresponding to experimental situations, namely a single two-level atom submitted to a monochromatic light triggering transitions from the ground to the excited state. After a short summary of present quantum approaches, we explain how a general "kinetic-like" Kolmogorov equation yields the statistical properties of the fluorescent light radiated by the atom which makes at once Rabi oscillations between the two states, and random quantum jumps with photo-emission. As an exemple we give the probability distribution of the time intervals between two successive emitted photons by using the Kolmogorov equation.

It has long been suspected that flows of incompressible fluids at large or infinite Reynolds number (namely at small or zero viscosity) may present finite time singularities. We review briefly the theoretical situation on this point. We discuss the effect of a small viscosity on the self-similar solution of the Euler equations for inviscid fluids. Then we show that single point records of velocity fluctuations in the Modane wind tunnel display correlations between large velocities and large accelerations in full agreement with scaling laws derived from Leray's equations (1934) for self-similar singular solutions of the fluid equations. Conversely those experimental velocity-acceleration correlations are contradictory to the Kolmogorov scaling laws.

It has long been suspected that flows of incompressible fluids at very large or infinite Reynolds may present finite time singularities. We review briefly the theoretical situation on this point. Then we show that single point records of velocity fluctuations in the Modane wind tunnel show correlations between large velocities and large accelerations that are in agreement with the scaling laws for such singularities as derived by Leray in 1934. Conversely the experimental correlations between velocity and acceleration are not explainable by Kolmogorov scalings. This implies in particular that the singularities cannot be seen as the end of a cascade in the sense of Kolmogorov, but are best described as singular events in the sense of Leray.

The equations for a self-similar solution of an inviscid incompressible fluid are mapped into an integral equation which hopefully can be solved by iteration. It is argued that the exponent of the similarity are ruled by Kelvin's theorem of conservation of circulation. The end result is an iteration with a nonlinear term entering in a kernel given by a 3D integral (in general 3D flow) or 2D (for swirling flows), which seems to be within reach of present day computational power. Because of the slow decay of the similarity solution at large distances the total energy is diverging and recent mathematical results excluding a solution of the self-similar solution of Euler equation do not apply.

To answer the question whether a cascade of energy exists or not in turbulence, we propose a set of correlation functions able to test if there is an irreversible transfert of energy, step by step, from large to small structures. These tests are applied to real Eulerian data of a turbulent velocity flow, taken in the wind grid tunnel of Modane, and also to a prototype model equation for wave turbulence. First we demonstrate the irreversible character of the flow by using multi-time correlation function at a given point of space. Moreover the unexpected behavior of the test function leads us to connect irreversibility and finite time singularities (intermittency). Secondly we show that turbulent cascade exists, and is a dynamical process, by using a test function depending on time and frequency. The cascade shows up only in the inertial domain where the kinetic energy is transferred more rapidly (on average) from the wavenumber $k_{1}$ to $k_{2}$ than from $k_{1}$ to $k'_{2}$ larger than $k_{2}$.

This research introduces a new drop fluidics, which uses a deformable and stretchable elastomeric film as the platform, instead of the commonly used rigid supports. Such a soft film impregnated with magnetic particles can be modulated with an external electromagnetic field that produces a vast array of topographical landscapes with varying surface curvature, which, in conjunction with capillarity, can direct and control motion of water droplets efficiently and accurately. When a thin layer of oil is present on this film that is deformed locally, a centrosymmetric wedge is formed. A water droplet placed on this oil laden film becomes asymmetrically deformed thus producing a gradient of Laplace pressure within the droplet setting it to motion. A simple theory is presented that accounts for the droplet speed in terms of such geometric variables as the volume of the droplet and the thickness of the oil film covering the soft elastomeric film, as well as such material variables as the viscosity of the oil and interfacial tension of the oil-water interfaces. Following the verification of the theoretical result using well-controlled model systems, we demonstrate how the electromagnetically controlled elasto-capillary force can be used to manipulate the motion of single and/or multiple droplets on the surface of the elastomeric film and how such elementary operations as drop fusion and thermally addressed chemical transformation can be carried out in aqueous droplets. It is expected that the resulting drop fluidics would be suitable for digital control of drop motion by simply switching on and off the electromagnetic fields applied at different positions underneath the elastomeric film. We anticipate that this method of directing and manipulating water droplets is poised for its applications in various biochemical reaction engineering, an example of which is Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

We discuss the statistics of emission of photons by a single atom or ion illuminated by a laser beam at the frequency of quasi-resonance between two energy levels, a situation that corresponds to real experiments. We extend this to the case of two laser beams resonant with the energy differences between two excited levels and the ground state (three level atom in V-configuration). We use a novel approach of this type of problem by considering Kolmogorov equation for the probability distribution of the atomic state which takes into account first the deterministic evolution of this state under the effect of the incoming laser beam and the random emission of photons during the spontaneous decay of the excited state(s) to the ground state. This approach yields solvable equations in the two level atom case. For the three level atom case we set the problem and define clearly its frame. The results obtained are valid both in the opposite limits of rare and of frequent spontaneous decay, compared to the period of the optical Rabi oscillations due to the interaction between the resonant excitation and the atomic levels. Our theory gives access to various statistical properties of the fluorescence light, including one showing that its fluctuations in time are not invariants under time reversal. This result puts in evidence the fundamentally irreversible character of quantum measurements, represented here by the emission of photons of fluorescence., Comment: Conference STATPHYS26

We present an experimental and theoretical description of the kinetics of coalescence of two water drops on a plane solid surface. The case of partial wetting is considered. The drops are in an atmosphere of nitrogen saturated with water where they grow by condensation and eventually touch each other and coalesce. A new convex composite drop is rapidly formed that then exponentially and slowly relaxes to an equilibrium hemispherical cap. The characteristic relaxation time is proportional to the drop radius R * at final equilibrium. This relaxation time appears to be nearly 10 7 times larger than the bulk capillary relaxation time t b = R * $\eta$/$\sigma$, where $\sigma$ is the gas--liquid surface tension and $\eta$ is the liquid shear viscosity. In order to explain this extremely large relaxation time, we consider a model that involves an Arrhenius kinetic factor resulting from a liquid--vapour phase change in the vicinity of the contact line. The model results in a large relaxation time of order t b exp(L/RT) where L is the molar latent heat of vaporization, R is the gas constant and T is the temperature. We model the late time relaxation for a near spherical cap and find an exponential relaxation whose typical time scale agrees reasonably well with the experiment. 1. Introduction Fusion or coalescence between drops is a key process in a wide range of phenomena: phase transition in fluids and liquid mixtures or polymers, stability of foams and emulsions, and sintering in metallurgy (Eggers 1998), which is why the problem of coalescence has already received considerable attention. Most of the studies of this process so far have been devoted to the coalescence of two spherical drops floating in a medium. The kinetics of the process before and after the drops have touched each other is governed by the hydrodynamics inside and outside the drops and by the van der Waals forces when the drops are within mesoscopic distance from each other (Yiantsios \& Davis 1991). The composite drop that results from the coalescence of two drops relaxes to a spherical shape within a time which is dominated by the relaxation of the flow inside and outside (Nikolayev, Beysens \& Guenoun 1996; Nikolayev \& Beysens 1997). There are no studies, to our knowledge, of the coalescence of two sessile drops after they touch each other. In this paper, we report a preliminary study of the dynamics and morphology of this process, in the case of hemispherical water droplets which grow slowly on a plane surface at the expense of the surrounding atmosphere, forming what is called 'dew' or 'breath figures' (Beysens et al. 1991; Beysens 1995). We propose a scenario for the formation of localized turbulent spots in transition flows, which is known as resulting from the subcritical character of the transition. We show that it is not necessary to add 'by hand" a term of random noise in the equations, in order to describe the existence of long wavelength fluctuations as soon as the bifurcated state is beyond the Benjamin-Feir instability threshold. We derive the instability threshold for generalized complex Ginzburg-Landau equation which displays subcriticality. Beyond and close to the Benjamin-Feir threshold we show that the dynamics is mainly driven by the phase of the complex amplitude which obeys Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation while the fluctuations of the modulus are smaller and slaved to the phase (as already proved for the supercritical case). On the opposite, below the Benjamin-Feir instability threshold, the bifurcated state does loose the randomness associated to turbulence so that the transition becomes of the mean-field type as in noiseless reaction-diffusion systems and leads to pulse-like patterns.

Extra-large deformations in ultra-soft elastic materials are ubiquitous, yet systematic studies and methods to understand the mechanics of such huge strains are lacking. Here we investigate this complex problem systematically with a simple experiment: by introducing a heavy bead of radius $a$ in an incompressible ultra-soft elastic medium. We find a scaling law for the penetration depth ($\delta$) of the bead inside the softest gels as $\delta \sim a^{3/2}$. While this result is inconsistent with an ideal neo-Hookean model of elastic deformation, according to which the displacement fields must diverge, it is vindicated by an original asymptotic analytic model developed in this article. This model demonstrates that the observed relationship is precisely at the demarcating boundary of what would be required for the field variables to either diverge or converge. This correspondence between a unique mathematical prediction and the experimental observation ushers in new insights into the behavior of the deformations of strongly non-linear materials.

Almost frictionless skating on ice relies on a thin layer of melted water insulating mechanically the blade of the skate from ice. Using the basic equations of fluid mechanics and Stefan law, we derive a set of two coupled equations for the thickness of the film and the length of contact, a length scale which cannot be taken as its value at rest. The analytical study of these equations allows to define a small a-dimensional parameter depending on the longitudinal coordinate which can be neglected everywhere except close to the contact points at the front and the end of the blade, where a boundary layer solution is given. This solution provides without any calculation the order of magnitude of the film thickness, and its dependence with respect to external parameters like the velocity and mass of the skater and the radius of profile and bite angle of the blade, in good agreement with the numerical study. Moreover this solution also shows that a lubricating water layer of macroscopic thickness always exists for standard values of ice skating data, contrary to what happens in the case of cavitation of droplets due to thermal heating (Leidenfrost effect)., Comment: revised version

In this contribution to the volume in memoriam of Michel Henon, we thought appropriate to look at his early scientific work devoted to the dynamics of large assemblies of interacting masses. He predicted in his PhD thesis that, in such a system, first a collapse of mass occurs at the center and that later binaries stars are formed there. Henceforth, the negative energy of binding of pairs becomes a source of positive energy for the rest of the cluster which evaporate because of that. We examine under what conditions such a singularity can occur, and what could happen afterwards. The question we ask is: does the speed of light {\it{in vacuo}} depend on its frequency? While the answer is NO in the frame of classical physics, we point out that the opposite could be true if one takes into account the polarization of Dirac sea. We estimate the dependence of the index of refraction of vacuum + Dirac sea versus the wavelength of an incoming beam, and suggest a way to test this effect.

Surface tension tends to minimize the area of interfaces between pieces of matter in different thermodynamic phases, be they in the solid or the liquid state. This can be relevant for the macroscopic shape of very soft solids, and lead to a roughening of initially sharp edges. We calculate this effect for a neo-Hookean elastic solid, with assumptions corresponding to actual experiments, namely the case where an initially sharp edge is rounded by the effect of surface tension felt when the fluid surrounding the soft solid (and so surface tension) is changed at the solid/liquid boundary. We consider two opposite limits where the analysis can be carried to the end, the one of a shallow angle and the one of a very sharp angle. Both cases yield a discontinuity of curvature in the state with surface tension although the initial state had a discontinuous slope.

An equation for the evolution of the distribution of wealth in a population of economic agents making binary transactions with a constant total amount of "money" has recently been proposed by one of us (RLR). This equation takes the form of an iterated nonlinear map of the distribution of wealth. The equilibrium distribution is known and takes a rather simple form. If this distribution is such that, at some time, the higher momenta of the distribution exist, one can find exactly their law of evolution. A seemingly simple extension of the laws of exchange yields also explicit iteration formulae for the higher momenta, but with a major difference with the original iteration because high order momenta grow indefinitely. This provides a quantitative model where the spreading of wealth, namely the difference between the rich and the poor, tends to increase with time., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

We demonstrate the instability of the free surface of a soft elastic solid facing downwards. Experiments are carried out using a gel of constant density $\rho$, shear modulus $\mu$, put in a rigid cylindrical dish of depth $h$. When turned upside down, the free surface of the gel undergoes a normal outgoing acceleration $g$. It remains perfectly flat for $\rho g h/\mu<\alpha^* $ with $\alpha^*\simeq 6$, whereas a steady pattern spontaneously appears in the opposite case. This phenomenon results from the interplay between the gravitational energy and the elastic energy of deformation, which reduces the Rayleigh waves celerity and vanishes it at the threshold.

We consider a dilute system of small hard beads or hard fibers immersed in a very soft gel able to withstand large elastic deformations. Because of its low to very low shear modulus, this system is very sensitive to small forces. We calculate the local deformation induced by a constant volume force, the inclusion weight. We explain how this deformation could be put in evidence by using techniques similar to the PIV method (particle image velocimetry) used to show complex velocity fields in transparent fluids.

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the behavior of Leidenfrost droplets inserted in a Hele-Shaw cell. As a result of the confinement from the two surfaces, the droplet has the shape of a flattened disc and is thermally isolated from the surface by the two evaporating vapor layers. An analysis of the evaporation rate using simple scaling arguments is in agreement with the experimental results. Using the lubrication approximation we numerically determine the shape of the droplets as a function of its radius. We furthermore find that the droplet width tends to zero at its center when the radius reaches a critical value. This prediction is corroborated experimentally by the direct observation of the sudden transition from a flattened disc into an expending torus. Below this critical size, the droplets are also displaying capillary azimuthal oscillating modes reminiscent of a hydrodynamic instability.

We experimentally investigate the Leidenfrost effect at pressures ranging from 1 to 0.05 atmospheric pressure. As a direct consequence of the Clausius-Clapeyron phase diagram of water, the droplet temperature can be at ambient temperature in a non-sophisticated lab environment. Furthermore, the lifetime of the Leidenfrost droplet is significantly increased in this low pressure environment. The temperature and pressure dependance of the evaporation rate are successfully tested against a recently proposed model. These results may pave a way to reach efficient Leidenfrost micro-fluidic and milli-fluidic applications., Comment: Soft Matter (2013) accepted for publication

The supernovae are typical complex phenomena in fluid mechanics with very different time scales. We describe them in the light of catastrophe theory, assuming that successive equilibria between pressure and gravity present a saddle-node bifurcation. In the early stage we show that the loss of equilibrium may be described by a generic equation of the Painlev\'e I form. In the final stage of the collapse, just before the divergence of the central density, we show that the existence of a self-similar collapsing solution compatible with the numerical observations imposes that the gravity forces are stronger than the pressure ones. This situation differs drastically in its principle from the one generally admitted where pressure and gravity forces are assumed to be of the same order. Our new self-similar solution (based on the hypothesis of dominant gravity forces) which matches the smooth solution of the outer core solution, agrees globally well with our numerical results. Whereas some differences with the earlier self-similar solutions are minor, others are very important. For example, we find that the velocity field becomes singular at the collapse time, diverging at the center, and decreasing slowly outside the core, whereas previous works described a finite velocity field in the core which tends to a supersonic constant value at large distances. This discrepancy should be important for explaining the emission of remnants in the post-collapse regime. We discuss the scaling laws for the flow generated in a viscous fluid by a wave propagating along a solid boundary. This has applications to the displacement of tiny objects on solids, under the effect of progressive surface waves and for the swimming of microanimals by undulation of ciliae along their body surface.

Quantum tunneling introduces a fundamental difference between classical and quantum mechanics. Whenever the classical ground state is non-unique (degenerate), quantum mechanics restore uniqueness thanks to tunneling. A condensate in a rotating trap with a vortex can have such a degenerate classical ground state, a degeneracy that is excluded in the absence of rotation at least when the Gross-Pitaevskii equation applies. If the rotating trap has a center of symmetry, like a figure eight (a peanut), the vortex may be on either side with the same energy yielding a degenerate ground state, a degeneracy lifted by quantum tunneling. In the framework of the lubrication approximation, we derive a set of equations describing the steady bottom profile of Leidenfrost drops coupled with the vapor pressure. This allows to derive scaling laws for the geometry of the concave bubble encapsulated between the drop and the hot plate under it. The results agree with experimental observations in the case of droplets with radii smaller than the capillary length Rc as well as in the case of puddles with radii larger than Rc., Comment: special issue in honor of Paul Clavin

We put in evidence the unexpected behaviour of Leidenfrost droplets at the later stage of their evaporation. We predict and observe that, below a critical size $R_l$, the droplets spontaneously take-off due to the breakdown of the lubrication regime. We establish the theoretical relation between the droplet radius and its elevation. We predict that the vapour layer thickness increases when the droplets become smaller. Catastrophes of all kinds can be roughly defined as short duration-large amplitude events following and followed by long periods of "ripening". Major earthquakes surely belong to the class of 'catastrophic' events. Because of the space-time scales involved, an experimental approach is often difficult, not to say impossible, however desirable it could be. Described in this article is a "laboratory" setup that yields data of a type that is amenable to theoretical methods of prediction. Observations are made of a critical slowing down in the noisy signal of a solder wire creeping under constant stress. This effect is shown to be a fair signal of the forthcoming catastrophe in both of two dynamical models. The first is an "abstract" model in which a time dependent quantity drifts slowly but makes quick jumps from time to time. The second is a realistic physical model for the collective motion of dislocations (the Ananthakrishna set of equations for creep). Hope thus exists that similar changes in the response to noise could forewarn catastrophes in other situations, where such precursor effects should manifest early enough.

We review the main properties of a supersolid. We describe first the macroscopic equation that satisfies a supersolid based on general arguments and symmetries and show that such solids might exhibit simultaneously or independently both elastic behavior and superfluidity. We then explain why a supersolid state should exist for solids at very low temperature but with a very small superfluid fraction. Finally, we propose a mean-field model, based on the Gross-Pitaevski\u{\i} equation, which presents the general properties expected for a supersolid and should therefore provide a consistent framework to study its dynamical properties., Comment: Lecture notes of the 4th Warsaw School on Statistical Ohysics

The equations for the sliding of a single block driven by an elastic force show numerically a fast and a slow step in their dynamics when a dimensionless parameter is very large, a limit pertinent for many applications. An asymptotic analysis of the solutions explains well the two sharply different steps of the stick-slip dynamics. The stick (slow) part takes place along a slow manifold in the phase space. But, in contrast with standard relaxation dynamics (of van der Pol type), the slow manifold is always formally attracting and the transition from slow to fast dynamics occurs because the slow dynamics has a finite time singularity breaking the assumption of slowness. This makes a new kind of relaxation oscillation. We show that the response of the stick-slip system to an external noise displays a progressive speed-up before the transition, in contrast with the well known critical slowing-down observed in the standard case.

A generic saddle-node bifurcation is proposed to modelize fast transitions of finite amplitude arising in geophysical (and perhaps other) contexts, when they result from the intrinsic dynamics of the system. The fast transition is generically preceded by a precursor phase which is less rapid, that we characterize. In this model, if an external source of noise exist, the correlation length of the fluctuations increases before the transition, and its spectrum tends to drift towards lower frequencies. We discuss the hydrodynamic boundary condition for a superfluid moving tangentially to a rough surface. Specifically, we argue that the scattering of quantum fluctuations off surface roughness affects the nature of the boundary condition, and that this has important consequences including a new theorized critical speed and the presence of normal fluid at any nonzero speed, even if the boundary is held at zero temperature. We present the mechanics of a model of supersolid in the frame of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation at $T=0K$ that do not require defects nor vacancies. A set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations plus boundary conditions is derived. The mechanical equilibrium is studied under external constrains as steady rotation or external stress. Our model displays a paradoxical behavior: the existence of a non classical rotational inertia fraction in the limit of small rotation speed and no superflow under small (but finite) stress nor external force.
