This article focuses on the relationship between celebrities Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie. Richie and Paris Hilton have been BFF (best friends forever) since childhood-close enough to be each other's accessory-but could they now be drifting apart? These days the pair, in their third season on FOX's reality show The Simple Life, are rarely seen together off duty. A friend of both says the rift is growing in direct proportion to Richie's increasing emotional maturity-even though, at 23, she's a whole seven months younger than Hilton. And, say several sources familiar with the situation at Simple Life, fewer leafy greens in her contract. The sources say Hilton gets the higher pay (she's earning an estimated $5 million for this season's Life) and that has made for one riled Richie. WIT & humor ,CELEBRITIES ,TELEVISION personalities - Abstract
This article presents an obituary of television personality Johnny Carson, who died of complications from emphysema. Carson died quietly at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with only immediate family by his side: Christopher, 54, a golf instructor, and Cory, 51, a guitarist, his sons with first wife Jody, and his fourth wife, Alexis, 54, the woman who shared his many travels as well as his preference for solitude. For the record, Carson didn't invent the late-night talk show. He didn't even invent Tonight. After rising through the world of radio and game shows, he was 36 on Oct. 1, 1962, when he took over as host from mercurial Jack Paar (who died last year at 86). But it was Carson who turned that desk--a flimsy prop table--into the Holy Grail for several generations of comic talents, including David Letterman, now on CBS, Conan O'Brien, who is expected to take over from Leno in 2009 ("Anyone who does this for a living," he said, "is trying in vain to be Johnny Carson") and Jon Stewart. Carson, though, was a tonic, not an aphrodisiac. His show was a smooth-humming engine that purred on and on, toting up a final guest tally of more than 22,000 as its host over time came to resemble the hood ornament, sleek and silvery. CRIMINAL sentencing ,JURY ,CAPITAL punishment ,MURDER trials - Abstract
This article reports on the sentence decided upon by the jury in murder trial of Laci and Conner Peterson. Hunkered down over the past six months in the news-free zones of their homes, or the sequestered sanctity of their hotel rooms, and, ultimately, the privacy of their deliberation room, the Scott Peterson jurors managed to do something remarkable: calmly weigh the evidence in an extraordinary case with a full-blown media storm howling just outside their windows. Assuming his sentence is formally accepted by Judge Delucchi on Feb. 25, he will be sent to the state's death row at San Quentin, where--if the court history of other California death row inmates is a guide--he is more likely to die of other causes than by lethal injection as he waits for his appeals to wend their way through the system. This article focuses on Elizabeth Edward's breast cancer diagnosis. Earlier that week, on the morning after her husband and John Kerry lost their grueling election battle, Elizabeth Edwards, a 55-year-old former attorney, announced to the nation that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Although specialists at Georgetown University Medical Center have yet to determine if her cancer has moved into her lymph nodes, she and her family are bracing for an aggressive 16-week course of chemotherapy, then surgery followed by radiation. According to breast radiation oncologist Dr. Marisa Weiss, founder of a respected information Web site for women with breast cancer, the course of treatment recommended by Edwards's doctors may indicate that the cancer has spread into the lymph nodes.

For five of the soldiers caught up in the Iraq abuse scandal, every day has become a struggle against twin enemies: boredom and apprehension. The accused share a single tent at Camp Victory in Baghdad, where they are assigned menial tasks such as sweeping streets. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has warned that new images may soon emerge that are even more shocking than those now familiar photos of the soldiers tormenting naked Iraqi prisoners. This article discusses how anti-depressants relate to the suicide of Julie Woodward. From the very beginning, Tom and Kathy Woodward's firstborn was a golden child. And by the time Julie Woodward reached her sophomore year at a Catholic high school near her home in North Wales, Pa. Julie enrolled in a group-therapy program at the Horsham Clinic in Ambler, Pa. Her sister Caroline, who shared a room with Julie, now says that Julie, lying in bed, said she was experiencing the feeling of being lifted up toward the ceiling. Other family members recall seeing Julie pacing back and forth in her bedroom several days before the suicide, and rocking back and forth--both possible signs of a condition called akathisia, which can include agitation. ABDUCTION ,MURDER ,VIOLENT deaths ,KIDNAPPING ,ARREST - Abstract
The murder of Carlie Brucia, whose abduction was caught on camera, shocks the nation--and leaves many wondering if the crime could have been prevented. The moment, caught on a car-wash security camera and repeated endlessly on TV news, was every parent's darkest fear brought to life. Walking home at dusk in Sarasota, Fla., on Feb. 1 after a sleepover at a friend's house, Carlie Brucia, 11, was approached by a stranger, who spoke a few words, took her by the arm and quickly led her out of view. Five days later Brucia's body was found in the bushes behind a neighborhood church. "My emotions go from very difficult to control to feeling actual pain to being able to take a break from it for a while," says her heartbroken father, Joe Brucia Jr., 39. "But then it comes back." Just a month earlier Florida circuit court judge Harry Rapkin had been asked by corrections officials to issue a warrant to arrest Smith for violating his probation because Smith had failed to pay $170 in court costs for an earlier drug bust.

SUPER Bowl (Football game) ,BREAST ,MUSICIANS - Abstract
This article describes the incident during halftime of the Super Bowl in 2004 when singer Janet Jackson revealed a breast on national television. According to owner Byriah Dailey, the stylist took a liking to four rings, including a sterling silver sunburst that would become world-famous during CBS's Super Bowl halftime show--specifically the moment when Justin Timberlake ripped away part of Jackson's leather bustier to reveal her right breast to roughly 90 million viewers. Looks like she produced the greatest Super Bowl commercial ever--for her new album, Damita Jo, set for release March 30. Done up in a leather corset for her racy duet with Timberlake, Jackson, 37, later admitted to planning at least part of the stunt. Although Super Bowl XXXVIII drew enormous ratings, the Jackson flap is another black eye for the network, which is still smarting from other public criticism: for airing a softball Michael Jackson tribute special after the singer was accused of child molestation, and for not airing a biopic about the Reagans after pressure from conservative groups. To people in Burlington, Vermont, Howard and Judy Dean are just the folks next door. Busy with a thriving medical practice, Judy, 50, manages to get to PTA meetings but barely has time to cook a meal for the family, which includes son Paul, 18, a high school senior, and Anne, 19, who is at Yale. If Howard Brush Dean III has his way, next year he and Judy will be moving out of their humble house and into slightly more grandiose digs: the White House. Since declaring his candidacy for President in June, Dean, who served as Vermont's governor for nearly 12 years, has gone from virtual unknown to front-runner in the race among nine candidates to win the Democratic party's nomination. One thing Dean does not have, however, is a traditional politician's wife. With the exception of an appearance on the day he declared his candidacy in Burlington last summer, neither Judy nor the couple's children has ever joined Howard on the stump.

CHARITIES ,FUNDRAISING ,CELEBRITIES ,ACTORS ,SYNDROMES in children ,DEVELOPMENTAL disabilities ,PEDIATRIC neurology ,NONPROFIT organizations - Abstract
When celebrities shine their luster on a cause, small miracles and big research dollars often follow. Sure, some celebs may align themselves with charities to enhance their public image: a donation here, a photo op there. But many others take such causes far more seriously. "The only thing celebrity is good for is to bring attention to things that need attention," says Julianne Moore, who used her stardom to shine a light on Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, a little-known yet relatively common genetic disorder. Stars are often persuaded to go the extra mile through a chance encounter that over time grows into a heartfelt and deeply personal connection. As the following stories show, these relationships can be both painful and poignant. But many others take such causes far more seriously.

Major conflict in Iraq may have ended, but for families like the Holcombs, with both parents overseas, the battle continues at home and abroad. Inside a condominium on this dusty Army base, Sue Bearer savors her last few moments of peace, sipping coffee and taking a drag from her cigarette. This is the unseen Iraqi war, the quiet, unheralded heroism of the home front. For seven months now, since early February, Sue Bearer has been mother and father to her six grandkids because both their parents are on active duty in Iraq. For many the war may have entered its final stage on April 9, when U.S. Marines helped topple Saddam Hussein's statue in central Baghdad. But the coda has been long and brutal--for the 140,000 U.S. troops still deployed in sweltering temperatures and under constant threat and for their families back home, for whom it won't end until they meet safely again.Bearer's son Vaughn Holcomb, 40, and his wife, Simone, 30, don't know when they will be home; perhaps next spring.

Alexa Smagala has the walking thing down pat. She's 16 months old now, and she's on to talking and making observations. One thing she likes to do is point at the photos of Stanley, the firefighter dad she never knew, in her Holbrook, New York, home. "Alexa's first word was Da-Da," says her proud mother, Dena, 33, whose husband died in the South Tower. Such bittersweet moments bind the estimated 100 women who were expecting babies when they lost their husbands in the attacks of September 11, 2001. More than a year later, much has changed in their lives, starting with the babies, who are now toddlers. As they watch their children grow, the mothers, too, are finding their footing, feeling their way in a new world. "Oddly, I've become a more joyful person," says Haven Fyfe, 32, mother of Jackson, 3, and Parker, almost 1. "I realize how precious life is. On Christmas I made a toast: 'Here's to my husband. I live my days doubly for you." Many still cannot think of dating. "My heart is open to my kids and nobody else," says Barbara Da Mota, 37, mother of two. For all these women, the children are a link with the men they loved--increasingly so, as small personalities blossom. The kids are proof that their fathers are not just photos in a frame--and that death does not have the last word.

PRISONERS of war ,IRAQ War, 2003-2011 ,WAR victims ,MISSING in action ,FAMILIES of prisoners of war - Abstract
The article describes the rescue of U.S. soldier Jessica Lynch, a prisoner of war in Iraq. Back at the hospital, an Iraqi doctor led remaining U.S. troops to an area of shallow graves. Digging with their hands, doctors recovered the bodies of eight U.S. troops, including Lynch's former tentmate Lori Piestewa, the war's first female casualty. By the time she boarded a jet in Kuwait for the eight-hour flight to a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, she was upbeat and confident. She has many to thank for her survival, among them a 32-year-old lawyer named Mohammed who had seen Lynch on a chance visit to Nasiriya's six-story Saddam Hussein Hospital, where his wife worked as a nurse. Whether she was shot in captivity or earlier, during the battle in which she was captured, or even through friendly fire, is still uncertain. Back home on the other side of the world, in tiny Palestine, West Virginia, Lynch's family and friends heralded the news of her rescue with fireworks and a celebration that will probably continue well beyond her return.
