Abstract

The review covers the main content of the book, which includes three semantic blocks. The first block, a historical-literary one, is devoted to the perception of the personality and creative activity of A. P. Chekhov by Iraqi criticism. The second one analyzes the performances of Chekhov’s works on the stages of Iraq. The third block contains the Russian translations of the texts of the plays written by the Iraqi writer A. Naim, based on the works of Chekhov. The review highlights the range of problems analyzed by the authors of the book and the methodological aspects of comparative analysis and receptive poetics. The author of the article notes the specific features and peculiarities of the intercultural translation of the texts of Chekhov’s works from one artistic lan- guage into another in the situation in which the author and the readers belong to different cultural traditions. The review focuses on the fact that the study of the Arab perception of Chekhov’s personality and creative activity al- lows the researcher to see the Russian culture in a new light and to better understand the Arab culture. Attention is drawn to the fact that the presentation of Chekhov’s plays on the Arab stage takes place in a completely different cultural-historical tradition. This tradition is based on the folk theater and religious mysteries. They determine the apperceptive background and cultural experience not only of Iraqi audience, but also of the authors acting as retranslators of Chekhov’s works. The article emphasizes the significance of the appendix with the texts of five plays by Naim in Russian translation, which are remakes of Chekhov’s works. The advantage of the book is the absolute novelty of the material, a new vision of the problems and a heuristic approach to them, and the semantic expansion of the content of well-known literary works.

Abstract

The eighteenth century saw a remarkable increase in the number of works written by women, and also the number of women who made a living by writing. For the first time, being a writer was a viable career choice for a woman, and it was possible to support a family by writing, despite the backlash some individual writers, such as Mary Wollstonecraft, faced for their work. This thesis focuses on the work women did in the eighteenth-century theatre, and how they reconciled the demands of being a professional writer with their society's gender expectations. By analysing a variety of play texts written by different women, I show that they engaged critically with ideas about female virtue, the marriage market, and women's participation in the literary scene, the working world, and national politics. The plays of this period are relatively under-researched, and often do not appear at all in critical studies of eighteenth-century literature. My aim, therefore, is to rectify this situation, and to join other critics in rediscovering this interesting and vital era of female playwriting.

Abstract

This thesis closely examines the utilisation of dramatic characters’ comments on matters of literary and theatrical criticism. This phenomenon shaped a trend in European theatre during the first half of the twentieth century, and Egyptian theatre in the second half of the century. My main hypotheses are, firstly, that dramatic characters’ comments on literary and theatrical matters of criticism respond to specific problems that challenge theatre practice. Thus, my reading of literary and theatrical criticism within the dramatic texts studied in my thesis focuses on this criticism’s reformative function to rectify the crisis that faces theatre practice in general, rather than playwrights’ individual motives, such as responding to their critics. Secondly, socio-political, economic, and cultural aspects shape historical circumstances, which influence the current state of the theatre industry. Therefore, although Egyptian plays are noticeably influenced by European metatheatre, Egyptian playwrights utilise these borrowed techniques to highlight specific problems of Egyptian theatre such as the corrupt administration of governmental theatre and censorship. Finally, while Egyptian plays exploit European metatheatrical techniques, Egyptian playwrights claimed their works as a revival of intrinsically anti-illusionist traditional forms of entertainment such as the shadow play and Karagöz. This claim reflected increasing calls for pure Egyptian theatre, as part of the anti-Western jingoistic discourse of the political regime of the 1950s. In order to examine these assumptions, my theoretical approach draws from the fields of metatheatrical studies; literary and performance studies of parody and intertextuality; the history of European and Egyptian theatre; sociological, political and cultural studies; theories of modern criticism, and critical reviews. My contribution to the field of metatheatrical studies is in highlighting the reformative function of literary and theatrical criticism, whether as a discourse or a metatheatrical device, within a group of European plays that belong to different movements of the avant-garde during the first half of the twentieth century. More significantly, my study investigates the same phenomenon in Egyptian plays that, since the 1980s, have gradually been marginalised as fringe theatre and neglected by academic studies.

This works examines how the dramaturgical creative act varies according to the reality of the artist in exile, whether at home or abroad, in the context of Argentina's last dictatorship (1976-1983). Our corpus examines three playwrights in exile at the time in Spain (Bortnik, Gambaro and Raznovich) and the works of two artists who considered the topic of exile while remaining in Argentina (Gris de ausencia by Cossa and Lejana tierra prometida by Halac). Hong Kong, a borrowed place where her stories are always narrated by others. Theatre, a mediated platform where theatre makers look for ways to voice out their concerns and at the same time, audiences who expect to hear resonance of their lives and times. Theatre makers should never forget that the mission of live drama is to unfold realities through creative expression, images and ideas. This task is a never-ending mission for playwrights in Hong Kong. This article provides an overview of Hong Kong’s contemporary theatre life through two basic perspectives: the work of young playwrights and the impact of venue policy on the present development of local performing arts.

Abstract

The article studies contemporary British plays “Faust is Dead” (1997) by Mark Ravenhill and «Killology» (2017) by Gary Owen. The playwrights in their works present a young generation of computer users, involved in digital technology and virtual reality. The aim of this research is to analyze dramatic children-characters interacting with cyberspace who are the object or doer of evil. A new type of a child-hero, which is represented in the plays by Owen and Ravenhill, is now called a «digital» child. The hero of the play “Faust is Dead” is a virtual child who exists only in the network space. Subjecting himself to violence and brutality, Donny tries to confirm his reality, as the experience of pain is supposed to be the only proof of existence of this child. In the article Mark Ravenhill’s “Faust is Dead” is compared with the poem «Faust» by N. Lenau. The plays by Ravenhill and Owen were written at the interval of 20 years, and computer equipment and users changed during those years. G. Owen in the play “Killology” shows real children, who were born in the digital era. The “digital child” in the play by Owen is fully associated with the virtual world and feels comfortable in such an environment. “Digital” child is characterized by the feeling of virtual omnipotence, which often develops into cruelty and propensity to violence. However, if the hero of Ravenhill’s plays was cruel to himself in order to become real, the characters of Owen’s drama, on the contrary, are cruel to their virtual victims. Owen’s heroes do not want to go beyond the borders of virtual reality. The article considers the dynamics of contemporary British Theatre of Cruelty on the instance of children-heroes.

Abstract

The interface between Arts Council policy and the lived experience of amateur drama, which this dissertation examines, provides cultural historians with an access point to understand post-war Irish society. After decades of neglect, the Irish Government initiated a series of fundamental cultural responses to post-war Ireland’s socio economic crisis. These initiatives included the Report on the Arts in Ireland (1949), the passing of the first Arts Act (1951), establishing An Chomhairle Ealaíon / the Arts Council of Ireland (1952) and initiating the national An Tóstal Festival (1953). This research argues that Arts Council’s support for amateur drama and other cultural festivals was essential to the state’s response to this deteriorating economic situation. Following Raymond Williams’s approach to cultural development, this research uses the Arts Council archive to analyse the development of amateur drama festivals. In addition, physical and digital archives exploring the North Cork, Western, Clare and All-Ireland Drama Festivals tell the story of this movement. The predominant focus of recent work concerning Irish theatre history is the professional rather than the amateur experience. However, in recent years, scholars in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Ireland have begun to understand amateur drama as a means of exploring the process of change in society. Rather than see amateur drama as a springboard for the professional, this research shows it was where people in post-war rural Ireland experienced the creativity and storytelling of the theatre. In addition, plays performed at amateur drama festivals became opportunities to highlight issues of national importance, such as emigration, poverty, and the institutionalisation of vulnerable women and children. Finally, it concludes that with Arts Council support, amateur drama festivals became a voluntary grassroots movement influencing audience attitudes towards Irish modernisation. 2025-05-29
