We demonstrate a simplified out-door FSO link with modal split for down-/uplink and confirm its long-term stability without active beam tracking. We further prove the duality of modal and directional split through penalty-free full-duplex transmission.

Interference between two waves is a well-known concept in physics, and its generalization to more than two waves is straight-forward. The order of interference is defined as the number of paths that interfere in a manner that cannot be reduced to patterns of a lower order. In practice, second-order interference means that in, say, a triple-slit experiment, the interference pattern when all three slits are open can be predicted from the interference patterns between all possible pairs of slits. Quantum mechanics is often said to only exhibit second-order interference. However, this is only true under specific assumptions, typically single-particles undergoing linear evolution. Here we experimentally show that nonlinear evolution can in fact lead to higher-order interference. The higher-order interference in our experiment has a simple quantum mechanical description; namely, optical coherent states interacting in a nonlinear medium. Experiments at the interface of quantum field theory and general relativity would greatly benefit theoretical research towards their unification. The gravitational aspects of quantum experiments performed so far can be explained either within Newtonian gravity or by Einstein's equivalence principle. Here, we describe a way to measure components of the Riemann curvature tensor with maximally path-entangled quantum states of light. We show that the entanglement-induced increase in sensitivity also holds for gravitationally-induced phases in Mach-Zehnder interferometers. As a result, the height difference between the two interferometer arms necessary to rule out flat space-time by measuring gravity gradients can be significantly reduced., 6 pages, 2 figures

We report an experimental certification of indefinite causal order that relies only on the characterization of the operations of a single party. We do so in the semi-device-independent scenario with the fewest possible assumptions of characterization of the parties' local operations in which indefinite causal order can be demonstrated with the quantum switch. To achieve this result, we introduce the concept of semi-device-independent causal inequalities and show that the correlations generated in a photonic quantum switch, in which all parties are able to collect local outcome statistics, achieve a violation of this inequality of 224 standard deviations. This result consists of the experimental demonstration of indefinite causal order with the fewest device-characterization assumptions to date., 9 + 4 pages, 5 + 1 figures. We present here results of the Quantum Technology Flagship project UNIQORN in the area of integrated photonics for quantum communication applications. Three distinct integration platforms, namely indium phosphide based monolithic integration, polymer-based hybrid integration and the CMOS-compatible silicon platform, have been employed to manufacture components and sub-systems on chip for quantum communication devices. The choice of different platforms was made to exploit the best characteristics of each platform for the intended quantum communication device. The indium phosphide platform was employed to manufacture a transmitter chip for quantum key distribution featuring laser, modulators, and attenuators. The transmitter chip was evaluated in a QKD experiment achieving a secure rate of 1 kbit/s. The polymer platform was investigated for engineering non-classical light sources. Entangled and heralded single-photon sources, based on non-linear optics, were assembled on the polymer in a hybrid fashion together with waveguides and other passive micro-optical elements. A quantum random number generator, featuring a 70% randomness extraction efficiency, was also fabricated using the polymer integration technique. An array of 32 individual single-photon avalanche diodes, operating at room temperature and featuring an onboard coincidence logic, was coupled to the chip to demonstrate direct detection of photons on the polymer. Finally, a transimpedance amplifier based on gallium arsenide high electron mobility transistors was produced with an exceptional large electrical noise clearance of 28 dB at 100 MHz.

Photons are a natural resource in quantum information, and the last decade showed significant progress in high-quality single photon generation and detection. Furthermore, photonic qubits are easy to manipulate and do not require particularly strongly sealed environments, making them an appealing platform for quantum computing. With the one-way model, the vision of a universal and large-scale quantum computer based on photonics becomes feasible. In one-way computing, the input state is not an initial product state, but a so-called cluster state. A series of measurements on the cluster state's individual qubits and their temporal order, together with a feed-forward procedure, determine the quantum circuit to be executed. We propose a pipeline to convert a QASM circuit into a graph representation named measurement-graph (m-graph), that can be directly translated to hardware instructions on an optical one-way quantum computer. Graphene has emerged as a promising platform to bring nonlinear quantum optics to the nanoscale, where a large intrinsic optical nonlinearity enables long-lived and actively tunable plasmon polaritons to strongly interact. Here we theoretically study the collision between two counter-propagating plasmons in a graphene nanoribbon, where transversal subwavelength confinement endows propagating plasmons with %large effective masses a flat band dispersion that enhances their interaction. This scenario presents interesting possibilities towards the implementation of multi-mode polaritonic gates that circumvent limitations imposed by the Shapiro no-go theorem for photonic gates in nonlinear optical fibers. As a paradigmatic example we demonstrate the feasibility of a high fidelity conditional Pi phase shift (CZ), where the gate performance is fundamentally limited only by the single-plasmon lifetime. Quantum computers are on the brink of surpassing the capabilities of even the most powerful classical computers, which naturally raises the question of how one can trust the results of a quantum computer when they cannot be compared to classical simulation Here, we present a cross-verification technique that exploits the principles of measurement-based quantum computation to link quantum circuits of different input size, depth, and structure. Our technique enables consistency checks of quantum computations between independent devices, as well as within a single device. We showcase our protocol by applying it to five state-of-the-art quantum processors, based on four distinct physical architectures: nuclear magnetic resonance, superconducting circuits, trapped ions, and photonics, with up to six qubits and up to 200 distinct circuits.

Maxwell's Demon is at the heart of the interrelation between quantum information processing and thermodynamics. In this thought experiment, a demon generates a temperature gradient between two thermal baths initially at equilibrium by gaining information at the single-particle level and applying classical feed-forward operations, allowing for the extraction of work. Here we implement a photonic version of Maxwell's Demon with active feed-forward in a fibre-based system using ultrafast optical switches. We experimentally show that, if correlations exist between the two thermal baths, the Demon can generate a temperature difference over an order of magnitude larger than without correlations, and so extract more work. Our work demonstrates the great potential of photonic experiments -- which provide a unique degree of control on the system -- to access new regimes in quantum thermodynamics., 25 pages with appendix, 6 figures. Quantum technologies lead to a variety of applications that outperform their classical counterparts. In order to build a quantum device it must be verified that it operates below some error threshold. Recently, because of technological developments which allow for the experimental realization of quantum states with increasing complexity, these tasks must be applied to large multi-qubit states. However, due to the exponentially-increasing system size, tasks like quantum entanglement verification become hard to carry out in such cases. Here we develop a generic framework to translate any entanglement witness into a resource-efficient probabilistic scheme. We show that the confidence to detect entanglement grows exponentially with the number of individual detection events. To benchmark our findings, we experimentally verify the presence of entanglement in a photonic six-qubit cluster state generated using three single-photon sources operating at telecommunication wavelengths. We find that its presence can be certified with at least 99.74% confidence by detecting 20 copies of the quantum state. Additionally, we show that genuine six-qubit entanglement is verified with at least 99% confidence by using 112 copies of the state. State-of-the-art quantum key distribution systems are based on the BB84 protocol and single photons generated by lasers. These implementations suffer from range limitations and security loopholes, which require expensive adaptation. The use of polarization entangled photon pairs substantially alleviates the security threads while allowing for basically arbitrary transmission distances when embedded in quantum repeater schemes. Semiconductor quantum dots are capable of emitting highly entangled photon pairs with ultra-low multi-pair emission probability even at maximum brightness. Here we report on the first implementation of the BBM92 protocol using a quantum dot source with an entanglement fidelity as high as 0.97(1). For a proof of principle, the key generation is performed between two buildings, connected by 350 metre long fiber, resulting in an average key rate of 135 bits/s and a qubit error rate of 0.019 over a time span of 13 hours, without resorting to time- or frequency-filtering techniques. Our work demonstrates the viability of quantum dots as light sources for entanglement-based quantum key distribution and quantum networks. Both photonic quantum computation and the establishment of a quantum internet require fiber-based measurement and feed-forward in order to be compatible with existing infrastructure. Here we present a fiber-compatible scheme for measurement and feed-forward, whose performance is benchmarked by carrying out remote preparation of single-photon polarization states at telecom-wavelengths. The result of a projective measurement on one photon deterministically controls the path a second photon takes with ultrafast optical switches. By placing well-calibrated bulk passive polarization optics in the paths, we achieve a measurement and feed-forward fidelity of (99.0 ± 1)%, after correcting for other experimental errors. Our methods are useful for photonic quantum experiments including computing, communication, and teleportation.

Increasing demand for algorithms that can learn quickly and efficiently has led to a surge of development within the field of artificial intelligence (AI). An important paradigm within AI is reinforcement learning (RL), where agents interact with environments by exchanging signals via a communication channel. Agents can learn by updating their behaviour based on obtained feedback. The crucial question for practical applications is how fast agents can learn to respond correctly. An essential figure of merit is therefore the learning time. While various works have made use of quantum mechanics to speed up the agent's decision-making process, a reduction in learning time has not been demonstrated yet. Here we present a RL experiment where the learning of an agent is boosted by utilizing a quantum communication channel with the environment. We further show that the combination with classical communication enables the evaluation of such an improvement, and additionally allows for optimal control of the learning progress. This novel scenario is therefore demonstrated by considering hybrid agents, that alternate between rounds of quantum and classical communication. We implement this learning protocol on a compact and fully tunable integrated nanophotonic processor. The device interfaces with telecom-wavelength photons and features a fast active feedback mechanism, allowing us to demonstrate the agent's systematic quantum advantage in a setup that could be readily integrated within future large-scale quantum communication networks., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

International audience; Nonlinear nanophotonics leverages engineered nanostructures to funnel light into small volumes and intensify nonlinear optical processes with spectral and spatial control. Owing to its intrinsically large and electrically tunable nonlinear optical response, graphene is an especially promising nanomaterial for nonlinear optoelectronic applications. Here we report on exceptionally strong optical nonlinearities in graphene–insulator–metal heterostructures, which demonstrate an enhancement by three orders of magnitude in the third-harmonic signal compared with that of bare graphene. Furthermore, by increasing the graphene Fermi energy through an external gate voltage, we find that graphene plasmons mediate the optical nonlinearity and modify the third-harmonic signal. Our findings show that graphene–insulator–metal is a promising heterostructure for optically controlled and electrically tunable nano-optoelectronic components.

The realization of quantum networks and quantum computers relies on the scalable generation of entanglement, for which spin-photon interfaces are strong candidates. Current proposals to produce entangled-photon states with such platforms place stringent requirements on the physical properties of the photon emitters, limiting the range and performance of suitable physical systems. We propose a scalable protocol, which significantly reduces the constraints on the emitter. We use only a single optical transition and an asymmetric polarizing interferometer. This device converts the entanglement from the experimentally robust time basis via a path degree of freedom into a polarization basis, where quantum logic operations can be performed. The fundamental unit of the proposed protocol is realized experimentally in this work, using a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. This classically assisted protocol greatly widens the set of physical systems suited for scalable entangled-photon generation and enables performance enhancement of existing platforms.

Quantum key distribution, which allows two distant parties to share an unconditionally secure cryptographic key, promises to play an important role in the future of communication. For this reason such technique has attracted many theoretical and experimental efforts, thus becoming one of the most prominent quantum technologies of the last decades. The security of the key relies on quantum mechanics and therefore requires the users to be capable of performing quantum operations, such as state preparation or measurements in multiple bases. A natural question is whether and to what extent these requirements can be relaxed and the quantum capabilities of the users reduced. Here we demonstrate a novel quantum key distribution scheme, where users are fully classical. In our protocol, the quantum operations are performed by an untrusted third party acting as a server, which gives the users access to a superimposed single photon, and the key exchange is achieved via interaction-free measurements on the shared state. We also provide a full security proof of the protocol by computing the secret key rate in the realistic scenario of finite-resources, as well as practical experimental conditions of imperfect photon source and detectors. Superposition of two or more states is one of the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics and provides the basis for several advantages quantum information processing offers. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that quantum superposition permits two-way communication between two distant parties that can exchange only one particle once, an impossible task in classical physics. This is achieved by preparing a single photon in a coherent superposition of the two parties' locations. Furthermore, we show that this concept allows the parties to perform secure quantum communication, where the transmitted bits and even the direction of communication remain private. The vast development of integrated quantum photonic technology enables the implementation of compact and stable interferometric networks. In particular, laser-written waveguide structures allow for complex 3D circuits and polarization-encoded qubit manipulation. However, the main limitation in the scaling up of integrated quantum devices is the single-photon loss due to mode-profile mismatch when coupling to standard fibers or other optical platforms. Here we demonstrate tapered waveguide structures realized by an adapted femtosecond laser writing technique. We show that coupling to standard single-mode fibers can be enhanced up to 77% while keeping the fabrication effort negligible. This improvement provides an important step for processing multiphoton states on chip.

In his recent article [Phys. Rev. A 95, 060101(R) (2017)], Adler questions the usefulness of the bound found in our experimental search for genuine effects of hypercomplex quantum mechanics [Nat. Commun. 8, 15044 (2017)]. Our experiment was performed using a black-box (instrumentalist) approach to generalized probabilistic theories; therefore, it does not assume a priori any particular underlying mechanism. From that point of view our experimental results do indeed place meaningful bounds on the possible effects of ``postquantum theories,'' including quaternionic quantum mechanics. In his article, Adler compares our experiment to nonrelativistic and M\"oller formal scattering theories within quaternionic quantum mechanics. With a particular set of assumptions, he finds that quaternionic effects would likely not manifest themselves in general. Although these assumptions are justified in the nonrelativistic case, a proper calculation for relativistic particles is still missing. Here, we provide a concrete relativistic example of Klein-Gordon scattering wherein the quaternionic effects persist. We note that when the Klein-Gordon equation is formulated using a Hamiltonian formalism it displays a so-called ``indefinite metric,'' a characteristic feature of relativistic quantum wave equations. In Adler's example this is directly forbidden by his assumptions, and therefore our present example is not in contradiction to his work. In complex quantum mechanics this problem of an indefinite metric is solved in a second quantization. Unfortunately, there is no known algorithm for canonical field quantization in quaternionic quantum mechanics.

Photonic entanglement and heralded single photons are vital for optical quantum information processing, and are realized by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in chiefly just two materials: LiNbO${}_{3}$ and KTiOPO${}_{4}$. The particular properties of these materials, however, strongly restrict advanced techniques. Thus the authors study four other nonlinear optical materials, plus KTiOPO${}_{4}$, and configurations in which they can be used to generate pure photon states and entanglement of polarization or frequency. The team finds a broad variety of promising SPDC setups that are impossible to implement using the traditional materials.

Quantum computers are expected to offer substantial speedups over their classical counterparts and to solve problems that are intractable for classical computers. Beyond such practical significance, the concept of quantum computation opens up new fundamental questions, among them the issue whether or not quantum computations can be certified by entities that are inherently unable to compute the results themselves. Here we present the first experimental verification of quantum computations. We show, in theory and in experiment, how a verifier with minimal quantum resources can test a significantly more powerful quantum computer. The new verification protocol introduced in this work utilizes the framework of blind quantum computing and is independent of the experimental quantum-computation platform used. In our scheme, the verifier is only required to generate single qubits and transmit them to the quantum computer. We experimentally demonstrate this protocol using four photonic qubits and show how the verifier can test the computer's ability to perform measurement-based quantum computations.

In standard quantum mechanics, complex numbers are used to describe the wavefunction. Although this has so far proven sufficient to predict experimental results, there is no theoretical reason to choose them over real numbers or generalizations of complex numbers, that is, hyper-complex numbers. Experiments performed to date have proven that real numbers are insufficient, but the need for hyper-complex numbers remains an open question. Here we experimentally probe hyper-complex quantum theories, studying one of their deviations from complex quantum theory: the non-commutativity of phases. We do so by passing single photons through a Sagnac interferometer containing both a metamaterial with a negative refractive index, and a positive phase shifter. To accomplish this we engineered a fishnet metamaterial to have a negative refractive index at 780 nm. We show that the metamaterial phase commutes with other phases with high precision, allowing us to place limits on a particular prediction of hyper-complex quantum theories., Hyper-complex quantum theories are generalizations of quantum mechanics where amplitudes are generalized complex numbers. Here the authors study phase commutation in a photonic experiment, reporting consistency with standard quantum mechanics and placing precise bounds on hyper-complex theories.

Quantum simulators are controllable quantum systems that can be used to mimic other quantum systems. They have the potential to enable the tackling of problems that are intractable on conventional computers. The photonic quantum technology available today is reaching the stage where significant advantages arise for the simulation of interesting problems in quantum chemistry, quantum biology and solid-state physics. In addition, photonic quantum systems also offer the unique benefit of being mobile over free space and in waveguide structures, which opens new perspectives to the field by enabling the natural investigation of quantum transport phenomena. Here, we review recent progress in the field of photonic quantum simulation, which should break the ground towards the realization of versatile quantum simulators. Quantum optics has played an important role in the exploration of foundational issues in quantum mechanics, and in using quantum effects for information processing and communications purposes. Photonic quantum systems now also provide a valuable test bed for quantum simulations. This article surveys the first generation of such experiments, and discusses the prospects for tackling outstanding problems in physics, chemistry and biology.

Quantum Blindness While quantum computers offer speed advantages over their classical counterparts, the technological challenges facing their eventual realization suggest that they will need to be located in specialized facilities. Thus, interaction would then need to be on a quantum client:quantum server basis. Barz et al. (p. 303 ; see the Perspective by Vedral ) implemented a proof-of-principle protocol that illustrates complete security in such a setup—for both the client and the server. In this blind quantum computing protocol, the client maintains the security of their data and the specifics of the calculation they want to perform, and the server cannot access the data or calculation of the client.
