Background: Gold nanorods (GNRs) display unique capacity to absorb and scatter near infrared light, which arises from their peculiar composition of surface plasmon resonances. For this reason, GNRs have become an innovative material of great hope in nanomedicine, in particular for imaging and therapy of cancer, as well as in photonic sensing of biological agents and toxic compounds for e.g. biomedical diagnostics, forensic analysis and environmental monitoring. As the use of GNRs is becoming more and more popular, in all these contexts, there is emerging a latent need for simple and versatile protocols for their modification with targeting units that may convey high specificity for any analyte of interest of an end-user. Results: We introduce protein G-coated GNRs as a versatile solution for the oriented immobilization of antibodies in a single step of mixing. We assess this strategy against more standard covalent binding of antibodies, in terms of biocompatibility and efficiency of molecular recognition in buffer, serum and plasma, in the context of the development of a direct immunoenzymatic assay. In both cases, we estimate an average of around 30 events of molecular recognition per particle. In addition, we disclose a convenient protocol to store these particles for months in a freezer, without any detrimental effect. Conclusions: The biocompatibility and efficiency of molecular recognition is similar in either case of GNRs that are modified with antibodies by covalent binding or oriented immobilization through protein G. However, protein G-coated GNRs are most attractive for an end-user, owing to their unique versatility and ease of bioconjugation with antibodies of her/his choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemically controlled co-precipitation method has been adopted for the fabrication of pure and different wt% Zr doped CdO photocatalysts. Conventionally, the crystallite size and crystalline phase of CdO are in the midst of the parameters involved in the control of the photocatalytic activity. Aiming utterly at the size effect that modifies other attributes which are important to assess the photocatalytic activity of nanometric CdO, it was explored to synthesize CdO nanoparticles with controlled size, highly comparable morphology and analogous phase. The crystal structure and the crystallite size were estimated from the X-ray diffraction patterns and were confirmed through transmission electron microscope. The degree of crystallinity varied on Zr doping and the calculated crystallite sizes were in the range of 16-81 nm. The dopant ion Zr have been detected through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis signifying the dopant to substitute for cadmium (Cd) in the lattice of CdO. Particle size dependent optical band gaps calculated in the range 2.02-2.57 eV informed the viability of the materials to initiate photocatalytic reaction in the visible light region. Lesser recombination rate of the generated electrons and holes under light irradiation produced low intense photoluminescence peaks that displayed the appropriateness as photocatalysts. Zr doping resulted in the enhancement of photocatalytic activity, evaluated by monitoring the degradation of methylene blue solution. 0.5 wt% Zr doped CdO nanoarticles calcined at 400 °C exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity with better percentage of color abatement (80.95%). The pseudo-first-order reaction rate became faster on Zr doping such that the rate constant is ~ 0.4-0.5 h for Zr doped CdO while that for pure CdO is ~ 0.3 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TiO and ZnO nanofibers were fabricated through a facile electrospinning method. The obtained nanofibers were characterized by a variety of analytical means including FESEM, TEM, SAED, XRD, UV-Vis, and PL. Compared with nanoparticles, nanofibers can be recycled more easily when they are used as photocatalysts. The photocatalytic activities of these two nanofibers were investigated and compared by evaluating the photodegradation of hazardous dye Rhodamine B. Although, ZnO nanofibrous photocatalyst exhibits better initial activity than TiO nanofibrous counterpart, its photocatalytic performance is inferior to that of the latter on the whole. The photo-instability arising from photocorrosion may be responsible for its rapid deterioration in activity. The difference in the photocatalytic properties between TiO and ZnO nanofibers was discussed, and a possible photodegradation mechanism of organic dyes in the presence of the nanofibrous photocatalyst was proposed. In this work, TiO2 nanoparticles/Cu nanowires (TiO2NPs@CuNWs) binary composites with tunable coverage of TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by a facile method of mixing oleic acid-modified TiO2 nanoparticles with as-prepared Cu nanowires. Characterization studies including X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were applied to investigate the structure and morphology of the as-synthesized TiO2NPs@CuNWs binary composites. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2NPs@CuNWs binary composites was examined by photodegradation of methyl orange. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2NPs@CuNWs nanocomposites was ascribed to the moderate specific surface area, mesoporous structures, and the electron sink effect of the Cu nanowires. In principle, our investigation indicates that the TiO2@Cu self-assembled nanostructures can be a promising candidate of composite photocatalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
