During the Centenary of the First World War, a special platform, Europeana 14-18, turned into a crowdsourcing project, asking citizens of Europeans countries to give their archives concerning this terrible war. What can be learned from this wave of new archives? Which problems has been raised by the digitalization? Will Europeana 14-18 help researchers write a new history of the First World War?

There is a great realization that a professor teaching an introductory or philosophical foundations course in the field of leisure studies comes to, if that professor may not be from the dominant culture of most Western societies. This realization is as stark as their numerical presence in their respective departments. Why are the philosophical foundations of the field devoid of the experiences, voices, and perspectives populations of color, or even more broadly, the populations of the global majority? And, why is there an absence of historical discussions on the field’s role in perpetrating or condoning activities that hindered or constrained populations of color full access, enjoyment, and articulation of leisure? As we move forward in the field more globally, thinking and discussing the new and progressive ways that we can conceive the sociology of leisure, it is imperative that we rethink our philosophical foundations in reconciliation of the potential harm it may have caused (and may continue to harm) and the actual good it can invoke in assisting the myriad of scholars who are pushing more progressive efforts for a critical leisure paradigm (Spracklen, Lashua, Sharpe and Swain, 2017). The objectives of this manuscript are: 1) to briefly categorize the research in the field on Race and ethnicity; 2) to outline the key canonical texts of the field; 3) to consider and reconceptualize a racially and ethnically inclusive foundation for the field utilizing The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study as an example; and, 4) to identify some of the specific areas that this change and inclusion would impact or realign the field’s history.

What do Australians think of their history in light of these politicised historical debates? By way of answer, this article examines the enduring public contest over the past and then investigates more elusive, but no less significant, everyday conversations about Australian history around the country. By proposing a method of ‘oral historiography’ to gauge contemporary historical understandings in Australia, it brings a critical new perspective to these ongoing debates. It offers ordinary people a chance to contribute to national discussions about Australian history and it challenges some of the more simplistic and troubling assumptions of the history wars. Labor history in UK museums is constantly in a state of change. A hundred-year-old tradition of displaying and interpreting the history of the common people has seen a shift from the folk life museum to a much more all-encompassing model. The academic trend for and acceptance of working-class history began this process, and museums followed, albeit at a much slower pace. Young curators actively involved in the History Workshop, Oral History, and Women's History movements brought their new philosophies into the museum sphere. This internally driven change in museums has been matched with demand for change from above. Museums have been given a central role in the current Labour government's wide-ranging strategies to promote an understanding of diversity, citizenship, cultural identity, and lifelong learning as part of a broader social inclusion policy. The zenith of this plan would be a museum devoted to British national history, though whether this will take place is yet to be seen. The transformation of the People's History Museum makes an interesting case study. The museum, originally an institution on the fringes of academic labor history and actively outside the museum community, is now at the forefront of labor history display, interpretation, textile conservation, and working-class historical research.

Cloth, $79.95; Paper $24.95.)Reviewed by Lynda YankaskasFor several decades now, historians of the book have created a large literature on the history of readers and reading, ranging from seminal studies of literacy to economic analyses of the book trade and considerations of reading as an element of rural social intercourse. Ronald Zboray and Mary Saracino Zboray's Literary Dollars and Social Sense: A People's History of the Mass Market Book and Angela G. Ray's The Lyceum and Public Culture in the Nineteenth-Century United States consider two other means of entry into literary culture, shifting the spotlight from readers to writers (Zboray and Zboray) and to the culture of oral performance (Ray). Together, they suggest fruitful new avenues in the study of literary dissemination and print culture.Literary Dollars and Social Sense: A People's History of the Mass Market Book is not so much a popular history of cheap popular books as it is an accessible history of the participation of a wide range of individuals in the literary marketplace during the three decades before the Civil War. The Zborays' theme is "the triumph of social responsibilities over impersonal market forces" (xiii) in the antebellum literary scene. In contrast to what they call a "triumphalist narrative" of professionalization and commercial success for a chosen few, the Zborays draw on some 930 "informants" (xxv) from a wide geographic and demographic range to explore the complex interplay of social relationships, amateur authorship, and movement in and out of the commercial publishing world. In particular, they focus on the ways that interpersonal connections-"social sense"-influenced the production, informal circulation, publication, and reception of a wide variety of writing. The book usefully begins with a discussion of the various reasons that antebellum Americans wrote for publication: to earn money, to advance ideas like abolitionism or religion, to establish authority, to memorialize the dead, to fulfill the request of an editor, or to help a friend or family member in the publishing business.To demonstrate the intersection of "literary dollars" and "social sense," the Zborays tell the stories of three authors who met with varying degrees of success in the commercial publishing world: Charlotte Forten (a protegee of John Greenleaf Whittier), whose literary career was held back by racism; Lucy Larcom (another Whittier mentee), who achieved modest commercial success; and John Townsend Trowbridge, whose novels drew on his own struggles with Boston publishers. All three case studies illustrate the authors' argument that the ties of family, friendship, and community that motivated writing in the first place also played a major role in determining commercial success-"literary dollars."The Zborays are as interested in the ways reception shaped "social authorship" as in its production, and the remainder of the book explores the interactions of readers and writers. First, they discuss the ways that reading about, hearing about, and seeing authors could turn them, for antebellum Americans, into "virtual friends or lovers" (98). When amateur authors read about professional authors, they did so as "fellow producers and inhabitants of a social world in which writers and readers mingled" (98). Of course, those professional authors wished to sell their work, and the challenge of doing so forms the theme of another chapter. It is here that the tension between "literary dollars" and "social sense" is perhaps most fully developed. As the Zborays explain, both in bookstores and in more intimate meetings of publishers' agents and potential clients, "the business of buying and selling provided a backdrop for forging and maintaining relationships" (146). …

In this article the author reflects on three community oral history projects he conducted in Philadelphia between 1978 and 1984. Brief histories of these projects are used as an opportunity for reflections on urban folk history, and some of the forces and often unacknowledged “purposes” of the oral historian that shape interviews and the history that emerges from them.
