Abstract

We present observations of 11 quasars, selected in the range z = 2.2-4.1, obtained with ESA's Superconducting Tunnel Junction (STJ) camera on the WHT. Using a single template quasar spectrum, we show that we can determine the redshifts of these objects to about 1%. A follow-up spectroscopic observation of one QSO for which our best-fit redshift (z = 2.976) differs significantly from the tentative literature value (z ~ 2.30) confirms that the latter was incorrect., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; uses aa.cls, psfig.sty, natbib.sty; accepted for publication in A&A Letters

4. Analysis of astronomical data from optical superconducting tunnel junctions

Abstract

Currently operating optical superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) detectors, developed in ESA, can simultaneously measure the wavelength (delta lambda = 50 nm at 500 nm) and arrival time (to within ~5 micros) of individual photons in the range 310-720 nm with an efficiency of ~70%, and with count rates of order 5,000 photons per second per junction. A number of STJ junctions placed in an array format generates four-dimensional data: photon arrival time, energy, and array element (X,Y). Such STJ cameras are ideally suited for, e.g., high time- resolution spectrally-resolved monitoring of variable sources or low-resolution spectroscopy of faint extragalactic objects. The reduction of STJ data involves detector efficiency correction, atmo- spheric extinction correction, sky background subtraction, and, unlike that of data from CCD-based systems, a more complex energy calibration, barycentric arrival time correction, energy range selection, and time binning; these steps are, in many respects, analogous to procedures followed in high-energy astro- physics. This paper discusses these calibration steps in detail using a repre- sentative observation of the cataclysmic variable UZ Fornacis; these data were obtained with ESA's S-Cam2 6x6-pixel device. We furthermore discuss issues re- lated to telescope pointing and guiding, differential atmospheric refraction, and atmosphere-induced image motion and image smearing (`seeing') in the focal plane. We also present a simple and effective recipe for extracting the evolu- tion of atmospheric seeing with time from any science exposure, and discuss a number of caveats in the interpretation of STJ-based time-binned data, such as light curves and hardness ratio plots., Comment: 21 pages, 9 PostScript figures (12 files), LaTeX using osa.sty and psfig.sty; accepted for publication in `Focal plane detector array developments', eds Z. Abstract

Vertebrate pest animal control and research is a relatively small area of activity within the agricultural and environmental fields. However, it is critical for agricultural productivity and biodiversity. There is much to be gained by having vertebrate pest controllers and researchers collaborating worldwide. The critical mass achieved through collaboration will result in faster registration of new products, better implementation of new methods, and increased skills within vertebrate pest units. The plain fact is that vertebrate pest control involves the killing of animals, sometimes those with iconic status. Having the public, or even other scientists, recognize the need for animal control can be complicated because of people’s natural concern for the welfare of animals. Those involved in the sector must become better advocates for the agricultural and biodiversity benefits of animal control. Although it is very uncomfortable for many scientists, they must face up to community dialogue in all its modern forms, and not simply rely on scientific reports and published papers speaking for themselves.

6. The Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre: An Australian Initiative of Relevance to North American Vertebrate Pest Management

Abstract

Following a successful bid to the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Program, the new Invasive Animal CRC commenced its operations in 2006. The IA CRC will focus on helping to solve invasive animal (vertebrate) pest problems through the development of commercial outputs, integrated strategies, and a business partnership that brings together national and international skills in science, management, commerce, and industry. Comprising a large number of members (41), the IA CRC will assemble critical mass to address a national problem, and it will bring together private and public land managers to integrate approaches to invasive animal management. This unique partnership will deliver the means to deal with existing high-profile invasive animal pests as well as those that have the potential to cause catastrophic impacts in the future. Outcomes will help solve the prominent and costly impacts of invasive species on agricultural, environmental, and social values.

9. Heavy quarkonium and QCD

Abstract

The sensitivity of the charmonium and bottomonium spectroscopy to the short distance part of the interquark potential is critically re-examined using the latest data. We confirm that the data cannot accommodate a QCD scale parameter (Ʌ(_MS)) smaller than about 150 MeV, whereas we find no constraint on larger values of the scale parameter, contrary to a previous analysis. The effects of dynamical heavy quark masses in the loop correction to the perturbative potential is studied in detail and the effective four quark theory with a massive charmed quark is found to give an accurate description of the perturbative potential for quarkonia of mass up to about 250 GeV. Predictions for the heavy quarkonium system of toponium are found to be very sensitive to the behaviour of the short-distance region of the potential and it is argued that the experimental determination of the mass and e(^+)(^-) decay width of the 1S and 2S toponium resonances (of mass around 80 GeV) with accuracy anticipated at the forthcoming e(^+)e(^-) colliders should enable the QCD scale parameter to be determined to within ± 100 MeV. The hadronic decays of the lowest S- and P-wave states of charmonium and bottomonium are examined in the light of recent experimental determination. All but the individual P-wave decays in charmonium can be adequately accounted for using reasonable values of the strong coupling constant and we are led to believe that the discrepancy lies with wavefunction corrections.

10. X-ray observations from the satellites Copernicus and Ariel 5

Abstract

This thesis describes the pre-flight preparation and analysis of results from two satellites containing experiments for cosmic X-ray Astronomy. The Copernicus satellite could be pointed to within thirty arc seconds with high spacial resolution, and was consequently used to map three extended extragalactic X-ray sources in clusters of galaxies. The previous observations of all three clusters are reviewed, together with the possible X-ray emission mechanisms capable of producing such extended sources. The Copernicus observations showed that all three extended X-ray regions in the Coma, Perseus and Virgo clusters were non uniform, and indeed very complex, being probably each centred on an active galaxy. Pre-flight preparation for two experiments on Ariel 5; a Spectrometer/Polarimeter, and a Sky Survey scanning experiment, are described in detail. Preliminary results on Cygnus X-3 from both experiments are presented in Appendix III, which indicate the source was in a high intensity low temperature state at the time of observation by Ariel-5.

Abstract

Superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) offer the capability of photon counting with intrinsic energy resolving power. This resolving power is ultimately limited by the variance on the number of charge carriers generated in the photon absorption process (Fano limit) and the variance on the number of tunnelled charge carriers (tunnel limit). In addition, the performance can be degraded by electronic noise related to the read-out of the devices and by spatial non-uniformities in the response across the detector area. The present generation of our Ta-Al STJs is such that their spectroscopic performance in the UV/visible is limited by tunnel noise. This noise contribution is usually considered a device constant, (which may only vary marginally with bias conditions) and evaluated for infinite integration time. It can be shown, however, that the tunnel noise contribution is strongly time dependent and can be reduced by almost an order of magnitude for a properly chosen integration time. In this paper we present the experimental demonstration and numerical simulations of this time dependence on a series of Ta-Al STJs with different pulse decay times. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the simulations, but do not quite achieve the predicted performance. For the optimum configuration, an effective tunnel noise contribution of ~70% of the conventional tunnel limit is found.

Abstract

Thallium bromide (TlBr) has attracted attention as an exceptional radiation detector material. Due to its high atomic number (81 for Tl, 35 for Br) it has excellent stopping power for hard X-ray and gamma rays and due to its high bandgap (2.7 eV) its operation requires no or only modest cooling. Promising energy resolutions have been demonstrated with detectors fabricated from high-purity samples (3.3 keV for 60 keV photons). These properties make TlBr the material of choice for hard X-ray imaging spectrometers in applications where small weight and/or size is important (e.g. space astrophysics and nuclear medicine). The charge response and spectroscopic performance of a semiconductor imaging array depend not only on material properties but on the pixel properties as well. It has been demonstrated, for instance, that the ratio between pixel size and thickness of the detector is an important factor for the charge response. This is known as the small-pixel or near-field effect. In this paper we investigate the optimization of TlBr pixel properties in a broader context, taking into account material properties (electron and hole mobility, diffusion and trapping), fabrication details and the specific energy range of application, with a view to optimizing both the response and energy resolution.
