This report describes example applications and considerations for using the National Renewable Energy Lab’s ResStock and ComStock end use load profiles (EULP). The report begins with an introduction to the three year project, and then provides instructions on accessing the EULP data and considerations for using the EULP and limitations of the data. The remainder of the report is on EULP use cases, including a variety of electricity planning use cases.

Energy efficiency (EE) has long been recognized as a source of value to the electricity grid. Especially with increasing penetration of variable renewable generation, demand response (DR) can also provide system value and support the evolving needs of the grid. Yet there has been little study to date of interactions between EE and DR that may complicate their grid impacts. In this study we perform bottom-up modelling of the interactive effects between EE and DR in buildings for three representative regions of the United States electricity grid. Leveraging new simulation tools that enable detailed modelling of the building stock, we synthesize system-level demand profiles for several scenarios representing different portfolios of EE measures. In each scenario, we couple the underlying building models with a database of DR-enabling technologies to estimate building-level DR capabilities and compute a system-level supply curve for DR. We assess the resulting EE and DR interactive effects based on an existing conceptual framework. The results show a complex relationship between EE and DR, with interactive effects whose size and direction can vary widely depending on the grid system, type of DR, and the framework level being considered. Most often, the overall effect is competition between EE and DR, but significant complementarity can also occur, especially when the EE portfolio includes controls measures. Our results suggest that EE and DR programs developed without considering interactive effects may erode the benefits of both resources, whereas a more integrated approach may yield increased benefits.

The rapid development of advanced metering infrastructure provides a new data source—building electrical load profiles with high temporal resolution. Electric load profile characterization can generate useful information to enhance building energy modeling and provide metrics to represent patterns and variability of load profiles. Such characterizations can be used to identify changes to building electricity demand due to operations or faulty equipment and controls. In this study, we proposed a two-path approach to analyze high temporal resolution building electrical load profiles: (1) time-domain analysis and (2) frequency-domain analysis. The commonly adopted time-domain analysis can extract and quantify the distribution of key parameters characterizing load shape such as peak-base load ratio and morning rise time, while a frequency-domain analysis can identify major periodic fluctuations and quantify load variability. We implemented and evaluated both paths using whole-year 15-minute interval smart meter data of 188 commercial office building in Northern California. The results from these two paths are consistent with each other and complementary to represent full dynamics of load profiles. The time- and frequency-domain analyses can be used to enhance building energy modeling by: (1) providing more realistic assumptions about building operation schedules, and (2) validating the simulated electric load profiles using the developed variability metrics against the real building load data.

BackgroundTsetse flies (Glossina sp.) are the vectors of human and animal trypanosomiasis throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Tsetse flies are distinguished from other Diptera by unique adaptations, including lactation and the birthing of live young (obligate viviparity), a vertebrate blood-specific diet by both sexes, and obligate bacterial symbiosis. This work describes the comparative analysis of six Glossina genomes representing three sub-genera: Morsitans (G. morsitans morsitans, G. pallidipes, G. austeni), Palpalis (G. palpalis, G. fuscipes), and Fusca (G. brevipalpis) which represent different habitats, host preferences, and vectorial capacity.ResultsGenomic analyses validate established evolutionary relationships and sub-genera. Syntenic analysis of Glossina relative to Drosophila melanogaster shows reduced structural conservation across the sex-linked X chromosome. Sex-linked scaffolds show increased rates of female-specific gene expression and lower evolutionary rates relative to autosome associated genes. Tsetse-specific genes are enriched in protease, odorant-binding, and helicase activities. Lactation-associated genes are conserved across all Glossina species while male seminal proteins are rapidly evolving. Olfactory and gustatory genes are reduced across the genus relative to other insects. Vision-associated Rhodopsin genes show conservation of motion detection/tracking functions and variance in the Rhodopsin detecting colors in the blue wavelength ranges.ConclusionsExpanded genomic discoveries reveal the genetics underlying Glossina biology and provide a rich body of knowledge for basic science and disease control. They also provide insight into the evolutionary biology underlying novel adaptations and are relevant to applied aspects of vector control such as trap design and discovery of novel pest and disease control strategies.

States and utilities are developing increasingly ambitious energy goals. Part of the solution to meeting these goals is improving electric grid flexibility. This includes shifting electric demand to align with grid needs. Thus, identifying and using building energy efficiency and other distributed energy resources to produce the highest grid value requires highly resolved, accurate and accessible electricity end-use load profiles (EULPs).EULPs quantify how and when energy is used. Currently, few accurate and accessible end-use load profiles are available for utilities, public utility commissions, state energy offices and other stakeholders to use to prioritize investment and value energy efficiency, demand response, distributed generation and energy storage. High-quality EULPs are also critical for determining the time-sensitive value of efficiency and other distributed energy resources, and the widespread adoption of grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs).For example, EULPs can be used to accurately forecast energy savings in buildings or identify energy activities that can be shifted to different times of the day.This report serves as the first-year deliverable for a multiyear U.S. Department of Energy-funded project, End-Use Load Profiles for the U.S. Building Stock, that intends to produce a set of highly resolved EULPs of the U.S. residential and commercial building stock. The project team, made up of researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and Argonne National Laboratory, ultimately will use calibrated physics-based building energy models to create these EULPs.

BackgroundTsetse flies (Diptera, Glossinidae) display unique reproductive biology traits. Females reproduce through adenotrophic viviparity, nourishing the growing larva into their modified uterus until parturition. Males transfer their sperm and seminal fluid, produced by both testes and male accessory glands, in a spermatophore capsule transiently formed within the female reproductive tract upon mating. Both sexes are obligate blood feeders and have evolved tight relationships with endosymbionts, already shown to provide essential nutrients lacking in their diet. However, the partnership between tsetse and its symbionts has so far been investigated, at the molecular, genomic and metabolomics level, only in females, whereas the roles of microbiota in male reproduction are still unexplored.ResultsHere we begin unravelling the impact of microbiota on Glossina m. morsitans (G. morsitans) male reproductive biology by generating transcriptomes from the reproductive tissues of males deprived of their endosymbionts (aposymbiotic) via maternal antibiotic treatment and dietary supplementation. We then compared the transcriptional profiles of genes expressed in the male reproductive tract of normal and these aposymbiotic flies. We showed that microbiota removal impacts several male reproductive genes by depressing the activity of genes in the male accessory glands (MAGs), including sequences encoding seminal fluid proteins, and increasing expression of genes in the testes. In the MAGs, in particular, the expression of genes related to mating, immunity and seminal fluid components' synthesis is reduced. In the testes, the absence of symbionts activates genes involved in the metabolic apparatus at the basis of male reproduction, including sperm production, motility and function.ConclusionsOur findings mirrored the complementary roles male accessory glands and testes play in supporting male reproduction and open new avenues for disentangling the interplay between male insects and endosymbionts. From an applied perspective, unravelling the metabolic and functional relationships between tsetse symbionts and male reproductive physiology will provide fundamental information useful to understanding the biology underlying improved male reproductive success in tsetse. This information is of particular importance in the context of tsetse population control via Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) and its impact on trypanosomiasis transmission.

This paper describes a software system for automatically generating a reference (baseline) building energy model from the proposed (as-designed) building energy model. This system is built using the OpenStudio Software Development Kit (SDK) and is designed to operate on building energy models in the OpenStudio file format.

Tsetse flies are the cyclical vectors of African trypanosomes and one of several methods to manage this vector is the sterile insect technique (SIT). The ability to determine the sex of tsetse pupae with the objective to separate the sexes before adult emergence has been a major goal for decades for tsetse management programmes with an SIT component. Tsetse females develop faster and pharate females inside the pupae melanise 1–2 days before males. This earlier melanisation can be detected by infrared cameras through the pupal shell, and the newly developed Near InfraRed Pupae Sex Sorter (NIRPSS) takes advantage of this. The melanisation process is not homogeneous for all fly organs and the pupa needs to be examined ventrally, dorsally and laterally to ensure accurate classification by an image analysis algorithm. When the pupae are maturing at a constant temperature of 24 °C and sorted at the appropriate age, 24 days post-larviposition for Glossina palpalis gambiensis, the sorting machine can efficiently separate the sexes. The recovered male pupae can then be sterilised for field releases of males, while the rest of the pupae can be used to maintain the laboratory colony. The sorting process with the new NIRPSS had no negative impact on adult emergence and flight ability. A mean male recovery of 62.82 ± 3.61% was enough to provide sterile males to an operational SIT programme, while mean contamination with females (4.69 ± 3.02%) was low enough to have no impact on the maintenance of a laboratory colony.

Tamarixia radiata, a species specific ectoparasitoid of the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, was imported from Pakistan and permitted by the PPQ Permitting Unit for field release in Texas. Over 130,000 parasitoids have been released in the Lower Rio Grande Valley with establishment confirmed at 39 locations. Both open and closed releases are conducted and used to assess establishment and efficacy. Closed releases made in fine-mesh sleeve cages indicate parasitism levels at 10.4%.  When compared to the controls, host mortality is reported at 64.9% in cages with parasitoids present versus 4.4% in cages with parasitoids absent. Further investigations into the host mortality of ACP nymphs have been explored by conducting visual observations on the behavior of female parasitoids (n = 30) for one-hour periods in arenas with suitable hosts. Data indicates that females will mount 3.1 + 0.5 nymphs per hour. The parasitoid will either oviposit the nymph on the ventral side (36.5% of the time) or probe the nymph on the dorsal side (63.5% of the time).  After probing, the parasitoid will either walk away (87.9% of the time) or host feed (12.1% of the time).  Host feeding was documented at 0.43 + 0.1 nymphs per hour. All nymphs that were host-fed were found to be eventually dead.  Host mortality (64.9%) and parasitism rates (10.4%) combined can reduce ACP populations by 75.3%. Studies are still ongoing to help reduce both ACP populations and the incidence of citrus greening disease.

Data, statistical models and inferential procedures permeate CENS deployments, from the four founding scientific application areas to the more recent urban sensing campaigns. This cross-center research breaks down into three classes of research: 1) General statistical models for embedded sensing, with specific applications to data quality and continuous sampling, 2) Significant CENS-designed and supported databases and repositories, and 3) Studies into the data lifecycle for embedded sensing systems.

In this poster, we consider two major themes in the design of sensor networks: data integrity, and sampling strategies. For the data integrity problem, we propose a signature-based fault detection system for identifying both intermittent faults and persistent faults. Data-dependent features using temporal, spatial, and spatio-temporal information that are useful for detecting faults are identified. These features are combined into signatures that characterize each of the different fault types. We also discuss the problem of simultaneous parameter estimation and fault detection. In this case, parameters must be estimated from a distribution that is truncated in various ways as a result of the fault detection algorithm, which can lead to biased estimates. We propose several methods to account for the bias in parameter estimates. For the sampling problem, we describe two on-going projects. The first one deals with situations where sampling as you move (using sampling paths) is more effective than contemplating sampling points. A PAR sensor riding on a NIMS 3D node is one such situation. This configuration is especially well-suited for sampling phenomena that exhibit latent geometric structure, such as light fields in forest understories. We will consider the case where the phenomena can be approximated by a piecewise-constant field and suggest a novel estimation approach when we have sample paths as observations. The second project considers the problem of finding a sampling strategy to optimize the selection of the correct regression model from a set of competing regression models. The solution is driven by minimizing the probability of error in the selection and consists of a sequential algorithm that directs the collection of measurements. We develop an adaptive sampling algorithm to sample the field with a set of static sensors and one mobile sensor. The algorithm aims to jointly minimize the probability of error in the selection and the mobility cost. The algorithm presented provides a significant improvement in the probability of error in the selection of the correct model over the random collection of measurements.

"What comes first: the chicken or the egg?" Eyes and vision were a great concern for Darwin. Recently, religious fundamentalists have started to attack evolution on the grounds that this is a chicken and egg problem. How could eyes improve without the brain module to use the new information that eye provides? But how could the brain evolve a neural circuit to process data not available to it until a new eye capability emerges? We argue that neural plasticity in the brain allows it to make use of essentially any useful information the eye can produce. And it does so easily within the animal's lifetime. Richard Gregory suggested something like this 40 years ago. Our work resolves a problem with his otherwise-insightful work.

Existing adaptive sampling methods for mobile sensors are poorly suited to scenarios in which the sensor continuously samples as it moves. We discuss why this is the case and suggest some techniques that may help. Next we propose an entirely different approach that uses a colored planar triangulation model and how it can be analysed by using Bayesian inference and MCMC simulation, which we believe better utilizes the path sampling capabilities of some sensors.

This paper introduces the concept of participatory sensing, which tasks everyday mobile devices, such as cellular phones, to form interactive, participatory sensor networks that enable public and professional users to gather, analyze and share local knowledge. An initial architecture to enhance data credibility, quality, privacy and ‘shareability’ in such networks is described, as well as a campaign application model that encompasses participation at personal, social and urban scales. Example applications are outlined in four areas: urban planning, public health, cultural identity and creative expression, and natural resource management.

We envision the blossoming of citizen initiated sensing applications in an urban context, enabled by increasingly affordable and portable sensing hardware, and ubiquitous wireless access to communication infrastructure.In this paper, we describe the Partisans architecture, featuring infrastructure-supported selective data sharing and verification services. This effort represents an evolution of activity on embedded networked sensing from the scientific application space to applications in a space that raises novel issues in privacy, security, and interaction with the Internet.

For the sterile insect technique, and other related biological control methods where large numbers of the target mosquito are reared artificially, production efficiency is key for the economic viability of the technique. Rearing success begins with high quality eggs. Excess eggs are often stockpiled and stored for longer periods of time. Any pests that prey on these eggs are detrimental to stockpiles and need to be avoided. Psocids of the genus Liposcelis (Psocoptera, Liposcelididae) are common scavengers consuming various types of organic material that are distributed globally and thrive in warm damp environments, making insectaries ideal habitats. In this short report, we investigated the species that has been found scavenging stored mosquito eggs in our insectary and identified it to be Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel, 1931. Additional observations were made to determine whether these predators indeed feed on mosquito eggs, and to suggest simple, effective ways of avoiding infestation.

This article presents an analysis of gender identity within the context of lifelong learning. Constructed specifically around individual experiences of occupational apprenticeship in English professional football, it draws on a re-reading of data collected in the early 1990s to depict the way in which a group of young men were socialised into their new-found occupational culture and how their identities were shaped by the heavily gendered routines of workplace practice. Framing apprenticeship as a holistic "learning" experience, the article looks at how the legitimate peripheral participation of trainees in an established community of practice facilitated their adaptation to and assimilation of various skills, procedures and institutional norms via informal learning processes. Set against the historical development of apprenticeship in England, the article uses qualitative research findings to determine the extent to which apprenticeship within professional sport might facilitate the reproduction of stereotypical gender norms and values.
