Background: Pharyngitis is 1 of the most common conditions leading to inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions. When personal protective equipment (PPE) was at first constrained during the COVID-19 pandemic, Intermountain Healthcare recommended limiting rapid group A streptococcal pharyngitis (GAS) testing in urgent-care clinics to preserve PPE. Notably, the percentage of pharyngitis encounters prescribed an antibiotic and that underwent GAS testing is a key Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measure. We have described our experience with urgent-care pharyngitis encounters and the impact of temporarily reducing GAS testing on antibiotic prescribing before and during the COVID19 pandemic. Method: We identified all urgent care encounters between July 2018 and August 2021 associated with a primary diagnosis of pharyngitis using ICD-10 CM codes and a validated methodology. Pharyngitis encounters were assessed for antibiotic prescriptions ordered through the electronic health record (EHR) and the use of point-of-care rapid GAS tests. Pharyngitis encounters were analyzed monthly. We assessed the percentage of encounters associated with an antibiotic prescription regardless of testing and the percentage of encounters associated with an antibiotic prescription when a GAS test was or was not performed. We examined 3 periods relating to COVID-19 and GAS testing recommendations: the prepandemic period (July 2018–March 2020), the pandemic onset period (April 2020–June 2020), and the pandemic period (July 2020–August 2021). Results: Prior to the pandemic, the monthly percentage of pharyngitis encounters for which rapid GAS testing was performed was nearly 90% (Fig. 1). The average monthly percentage of urgent-care pharyngitis encounters prescribed an antibiotic was 38.9%, and the average percentage of monthly pharyngitis encounters prescribed an antibiotic that also underwent GAS testing was 90.4%. This HEDIS measure declined from 90.4% during the prepandemic period to 29.8% in the pandemic onset period when GAS testing was limited. Following resumption of routine testing practices the monthly percentage of urgent-care pharyngitis encounters for which rapid GAS testing was performed returned to levels ≥80% by July 2020 (Fig. 1). The average percentage of monthly pharyngitis encounters prescribed an antibiotic that also underwent GAS testing rose to 87.3% during this period. Conclusions: Limited PPE in our urgent care centers during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a mandated substantial decline in rapid GAS testing. As testing volume decreased, we noted a simultaneous relative increase of >30% in antibiotic prescribing for pharyngitis. These findings suggest that rapid streptococcal testing promotes appropriate antibiotic prescribing.

Nanotransfer printing (nTP) is one of the most promising nanopatterning methods given that it can be used to produce nano-to-micro patterns effectively with functionalities for electronic device applications. However, the nTP process is hindered by several critical obstacles, such as sub-20 nm mold technology, reliable large-area replication, and uniform transfer-printing of functional materials. Here, for the first time, a dual nanopatterning process is demonstrated that creates periodic sub-20 nm structures on the eight-inch wafer by the transfer-printing of patterned ultra-thin (<50 nm) block copolymer (BCP) film onto desired substrates. This study shows how to transfer self-assembled BCP patterns from the Si mold onto rigid and/or flexible substrates through a nanopatterning method of thermally assisted nTP (T-nTP) and directed self-assembly (DSA) of Si-containing BCPs. In particular, the successful microscale patternization of well-ordered sub-20 nm SiO x patterns is systematically presented by controlling the self-assembly conditions of BCP and printing temperature. In addition, various complex pattern geometries of nano-in-micro structures are displayed over a large patterning area by T-nTP, such as angular line, wave line, ring, dot-in-hole, and dot-in-honeycomb structures. This advanced BCP-replicated nanopatterning technology is expected to be widely applicable to nanofabrication of nano-to-micro electronic devices with complex circuits., (© 2023 The Authors. High-resolution nanotransfer printing (nTP) technologies have attracted a tremendous amount of attention due to their excellent patternability, high productivity, and cost-effectiveness. However, there is still a need to develop low-cost mold manufacturing methods, because most nTP techniques generally require the use of patterned molds fabricated by high-cost lithography technology. Here, we introduce a novel nTP strategy that uses imprinted metal molds to serve as an alternative to a Si stamp in the transfer printing process. We present a method by which to fabricate rigid surface-patterned metallic molds (Zn, Al, and Ni) based on the process of direct extreme-pressure imprint lithography (EPIL). We also demonstrate the nanoscale pattern formation of functional materials, in this case Au, TiO 2 , and GST, onto diverse surfaces of SiO 2 /Si, polished metal, and slippery glass by the versatile nTP method using the imprinted metallic molds with nanopatterns. Furthermore, we show the patterning results of nanoporous crossbar arrays on colorless polyimide (CPI) by a repeated nTP process. We expect that this combined nanopatterning method of EPIL and nTP processes will be extendable to the fabrication of various nanodevices with complex circuits based on micro/nanostructures.

Various lithography techniques have been widely used for the fabrication of next-generation device applications. Micro/nanoscale pattern structures formed by lithographic methods significantly improve the performance capabilities of the devices. Here, we introduce a novel method that combines the patterning of nanotransfer printing (nTP) and laser micromachining to fabricate multiscale pattern structures on a wide range of scales. Prior to the formation of various nano-in-micro-in-millimeter (NMM) patterns, the nTP process is employed to obtain periodic nanoscale patterns on the target substrates. Then, an optimum laser-based patterning that effectively engraves various nanopatterned surfaces, in this case, spin-cast soft polymer film, rigid polymer film, a stainless still plate, and a Si substrate, is established. We demonstrate the formation of well-defined square and dot-shaped multiscale NMM-patterned structures by the combined patterning method of nTP and laser processes. Furthermore, we present the generation of unusual text-shaped NMM pattern structures on colorless polyimide (CPI) film, showing optically excellent rainbow luminescence based on the configuration of multiscale patterns from nanoscale to milliscale. We expect that this combined patterning strategy will be extendable to other nano-to-micro fabrication processes for application to various nano/microdevices with complex multiscale pattern geometries.

Superhydrophobic surfaces have great potential for various applications owing to their superior dewetting and mobility of water droplets. However, the physical robustness of nano/microscale rough surface structures supporting superhydrophobicity is critical in real applications. In this study, to create a superhydrophobic surface on copper, we employed copper electrodeposition to create a nano/microscale rough surface structure as an alternative to the nanoneedle CuO structure. The rough electrodeposited copper surface with a thin Teflon coating shows superhydrophobicity. The enhancement of dewetting and mobility of water droplets on copper surfaces by electrodeposition and hydrophobization significantly improved the condensation heat transfer by up to approximately 78% compared to that of copper substrates. Moreover, the nano/microscale rough surface structure of the electrodeposited copper surface exhibits better tolerance to physical rubbing, which destroys the nanoneedle-structured CuO surface. Therefore, the condensation heat transfer of the superhydrophobic electrodeposited copper surface decreased by only less than 10%, while that of the nanoneedle-structured CuO surface decreased by approximately 40%. Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) has garnered much attention due to its excellent pattern resolution, simple process, and good compatibility with many other lithography methods for useful nanodevice applications. Here, we present a BCP-based multiple nanopatterning process to achieve three-dimensional (3D) pattern formation of metal/oxide hybrid nanostructures. We employed a self-assembled sub-20 nm SiO x line pattern as a master mold for nanotransfer printing (nTP) to generate a cross-bar array. By using the transfer-printed cross-bar structures as BCP-guiding templates, we can obtain well-ordered BCP microdomains in the distinct spaces of the nanotemplates through a confined BCP self-assembly process. We also demonstrate the morphological evolution of a cylinder-forming BCP by controlling the BCP film thickness, showing a clear morphological transition from cylinders to spheres in the designated nanospaces. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to control the number of BCP spheres within the cross-bar 3D pattern by adjusting the printing angle of the multiple nTP process to provide a suitable area for spontaneous BCP accommodation. Various high-performance anode and cathode materials, such as lithium carbonate, lithium titanate, cobalt oxides, silicon, graphite, germanium, and tin, have been widely investigated in an effort to enhance the energy density storage properties of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the structural manipulation of anode materials to improve the battery performance remains a challenging issue. In LIBs, optimization of the anode material is a key technology affecting not only the power density but also the lifetime of the device. Here, we introduce a novel method by which to obtain nanostructures for LIB anode application on various surfaces via nanotransfer printing (nTP) process. We used a spark plasma sintering (SPS) process to fabricate a sputter target made of Li 2 CO 3 , which is used as an anode material for LIBs. Using the nTP process, various Li 2 CO 3 nanoscale patterns, such as line, wave, and dot patterns on a SiO 2 /Si substrate, were successfully obtained. Furthermore, we show highly ordered Li 2 CO 3 nanostructures on a variety of substrates, such as Al, Al 2 O 3 , flexible PET, and 2-Hydroxylethyl Methacrylate (HEMA) contact lens substrates. It is expected that the approach demonstrated here can provide new pathway to generate many other designable structures of various LIB anode materials.

Nanotransfer printing (nTP) has attracted considerable attention due to its good pattern resolution, process simplicity, and cost-effectiveness. However, the development of a large-area nTP process has been hampered by critical reliability issues related to the uniform replication and regular transfer printing of functional nanomaterials. Here, we present a very practical thermally assisted nanotransfer printing (T-nTP) process that can easily produce well-ordered nanostructures on an 8-inch wafer via the use of a heat-rolling press system that provides both uniform pressure and heat. We also demonstrate various complex pattern geometries, such as wave, square, nut, zigzag, and elliptical nanostructures, on diverse substrates via T-nTP. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to obtain a high-density crossbar metal-insulator-metal memristive array using a combined method of T-nTP and directed self-assembly. A chemically defined patterned surface was created via a combined process of controlled evaporative self-assembly of concentric polymer stripes and the selective surface modification of polymer brush. The former process involved physical adsorption of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) segments into silicon oxide surface, thus forming ultrathin PMMA stripes, whereas the latter process was based on the brush treatment of silicon native oxide surface using a hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene (PS-OH). The resulting alternating PMMA- and PS-rich stripes provided energetically favorable regions for self-assembly of high χ polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS) in a simple and facile manner, dispensing the need for conventional lithography techniques. Subsequently, deep reactive ion etching and oxygen plasma treatment enabled the transition of the PDMS blocks into oxidized groove-shaped nanostructures.

Objectives: Chigger mites are vectors for scrub typhus. This study evaluated the annual fluctuations in chigger mite populations and Orientia tsutsugamushi infections in South Korea., Methods: During 2006 and 2007, chigger mites were collected monthly from wild rodents in 4 scrub typhus endemic regions of South Korea. The chigger mites were classified based on morphological characteristics, and analyzed using nested PCR for the detection of Orientia tsutsugamushi ., Results: During the surveillance period, the overall trapping rate for wild rodents was 10.8%. In total, 17,457 chigger mites (representing 5 genera and 15 species) were collected, and the average chigger index (representing the number of chigger mites per rodent), was 31.7. The monthly chigger index was consistently high (> 30) in Spring (March to April) and Autumn (October to November). The mite species included Leptotrombidium pallidum (43.5%), L. orientale (18.9%), L. scutellare (18.1%), L. palpale (10.6%), and L. zetum (3.6%). L. scutellare and L. palpale populations, were relatively higher in Autumn. Monthly O. tsutsugamushi infection rates in wild rodents (average: 4.8%) and chigger mites (average: 0.7%) peaked in Spring and Autumn., Conclusion: The findings demonstrated a bimodal pattern of the incidence of O. tsutsugamushi infections. Higher infection rates were observed in both wild rodents and chigger mites, in Spring and Autumn. However, this did not reflect the unimodal incidence of scrub typhus in Autumn. Scales are rooted in soft tissues, and are regenerated by specialized cells. The realization of dynamic synthetic analogues with inorganic materials has been a significant challenge, because the abiological regeneration sites that could yield deterministic growth behavior are hard to form. Here we overcome this fundamental hurdle by constructing a mutable and deformable array of three-dimensional calcite heterostructures that are partially locked in silicone. Individual calcite crystals exhibit asymmetrical dumbbell shapes and are prepared by a parallel tectonic approach under ambient conditions. The silicone matrix immobilizes the epitaxial nucleation sites through self-templated cavities, which enables symmetry breaking in reaction dynamics and scalable manipulation of the mineral ensembles. With this platform, we devise several mineral-enabled dynamic surfaces and interfaces. For example, we show that the induced growth of minerals yields localized inorganic adhesion for biological tissue and reversible focal encapsulation for sensitive components in flexible electronics.Minerals are rarely explored as building blocks for dynamic inorganic materials. Here, the authors derive inspiration from fish scales to create mutable surfaces based on arrays of calcite crystals, in which one end of each crystal is immobilized in and regenerated from silicone, and the other functional end is left exposed.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pregnancy on adnexal torsion (AT). We conducted a matched case-control study using the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Inpatients Sample (HIRA-NIS) from 2009 to 2011. AT patients were defined as women with both a diagnostic code (N835) and a surgical code for AT. The AT patients were randomly matched 1:4 with women without AT by age and year of claim. In total, 545 AT cases and 2180 controls were enrolled from a total of 1,843,451 women. After adjustment for such covariates as age, pregnancy was found to be associated with a lower rate of AT (adjusted odds ratio 0.314, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.237-0.416, P value <0.01) and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome was associated with a higher rate of AT (adjusted odds ratio 20.091, 95% CI 3.607-111.908, P value <0.01). We found that pregnancy is a negative risk factor for AT. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare the prevalence of thyroid diseases between women with and without endometriosis.We established the endometriosis group according to diagnosis codes, surgery codes, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist codes using the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Inpatients Sample (HIRA-NIS) from 2009 to 2011. Four controls were randomly matched to each endometriosis case. Thyroid disease cases were selected using the thyroid disease diagnosis code (E0X).Among the 1,843,451 women sampled, 5615 had endometriosis; 22,460 controls were matched to the endometriosis cases. After adjustment for age and sampling year, Graves disease was associated with endometriosis (odds ratio [OR]: 2.52; 95% CI: 1.30-4.88; P < 0.01), while hypothyroidism was not (OR: 1.17; 95% CI: 0.90-1.52; P = 0.25). Autoimmune hypothyroidism was also not associated with endometriosis (OR: 1.61; 95% CI: 0.88-2.94; P = 0.12).This study revealed an association between Graves disease and endometriosis., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose.

Graphene has been intensively studied for applications to high-performance sensors, but the sensing characteristics of graphene devices have varied from case to case, and the sensing mechanism has not been satisfactorily determined thus far. In this review, we describe recent progress in engineering of the defects in graphene grown by a silica-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique and elucidate the effect of the defects upon the electrical response of graphene sensors. This review provides guidelines for engineering and/or passivating defects to improve sensor performance and reliability.

Background: A cross-sectional study has reported that nickel allergy is associated with endometriosis. However, causal studies of this association are limited., Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of nickel allergy in women with and without endometriosis., Methods: We used a National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) sample cohort dataset that included approximately 1 million individuals from South Korea; the data were obtained between January 01, 2002, and December 31, 2013. We selected the endometriosis group according to diagnosis code (N80.X), surgery codes, and drug codes during the years 2009~2013. The controls were randomly matched to the endometriosis patients at a ratio of 4:1 by age and socioeconomic status. Patients with nickel allergy were defined in the cohort dataset as those with a simultaneous diagnosis code (L23.0) and patch test code during 2002~2008., Results: In total, 4,985 women were selected from the NHIS cohort database and divided into an endometriosis group (997 women) and a control group (3,988 women). The number of patients with nickel allergy in the endometriosis group was eight (0.8%), and that in the control group was thirteen (0.3%). After adjustment for age and socioeconomic status, the rate of nickel allergy in was higher in the endometriosis group than in the control group [odds ratio: 2.474; 95% confidence interval: 1.023~5.988; p = 0.044]., Conclusions: We found that nickel allergy is a risk factor for endometriosis.

Purpose: Ventricular repolarization is assessed using the QT interval corrected by the heart rate (QTc) via an electrocardiogram (ECG). Prolonged QTc is associated with an increased risk of arrhythmias and cardiac mortality. As there have been few reports regarding the effects of hyperthyroidism on ventricular repolarization, we studied the association between serum free thyroxine (free T4 [fT4]) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and the QTc interval., Methods: Thirty-eight patients with hyperthyroidism (<30 years old) were included, and we used their clinical records and available ECGs (between August 2003 and August 2011) to evaluate the association between their fT4 and TSH levels and their QTc interval. In addition, we studied the ECGs of 72 age-matched patients with no hyperthyroidism (control group) and compared their data with that from the patients group., Results: The QTc duration in patients with hyperthyroidism was significantly prolonged compared to that in the control subjects (P<0.001). In addition, the number of hyperthyroid patients with abnormal prolonged QTc was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.001). Among the patients with hyperthyroidism, patients with prolonged QTc and borderline QTc had higher fT4 levels and there was positive correlation between their fT4 levels and their QTc interval (P<0.05). However, no correlation was observed between their TSH levels and their QTc interval., Conclusion: We report that hyperthyroidism is associated with QTc prolongation. The correlation between the fT4 levels and the QTc interval suggests that thyroid status is associated with QTc values and the risk of cardiac mortality.

Nanoscale time-dependent mechanical-electrical coupled behavior of single crystal ZnO nanorods was systematically explored, which is essential for accessing the long-term reliability of the ZnO nanorod-based flexible devices. A series of compression creep tests combined with in-situ electrical measurement was performed on vertically-grown single crystal ZnO nanorods. Continuous measurement of the current (I)-voltage (V) curves before, during, after the creep tests revealed that I is non-negligibly increased as a result of the time-dependent deformation. Analysis of the I-V curves based on the thermionic emission-diffusion theory allowed extraction of nanorod resistance, which was shown to decrease as time-dependent deformation. Finally, based on the observations in this study, a simple analytical model for predicting the reduction in nanorod resistance as a function of creep strain that is induced from diffusional mechanisms is proposed, and this model was demonstrated to be in an excellent agreement with the experimental results.

Wet-chemical synthesis is a promising alternative to the conventional vapour-phase method owing to its advantages in commercial-scale production at low cost. Studies on nanocrystallization in solution have suggested that growth rate is commonly affected by the size and density of surrounding crystals. However, systematic investigation on the mutual interaction among neighbouring crystals is still lacking. Here we report on strong interactive growth behaviours observed during anisotropic growth of zinc oxide hexagonal nanorods arrays. In particular, we found multiple growth regimes demonstrating that the diameter of the rod is dependent on its height. Local interactions among the growing rods result in cases where height is irrelevant to the diameter, increased with increasing diameter or inversely proportional to the diameter. These phenomena originate from material diffusion and the size-dependent Gibbs-Thomson effect that are universally applicable to a variety of material systems, thereby providing bottom-up strategies for diverse three-dimensional nanofabrication.

To clarify the geographical distribution of scrub typhus vectors in Korea, a survey of larval trombiculid mites was conducted from 2005 to 2007 by collecting wild small mammals twice a year (spring and autumn) at 24 sites nationwide. A total of 67,325 mites representing 4 genera and 14 species were collected from 783 trapped rodents, corresponding to a chigger index (number of chigger mites per rodent) of 86.0. The predominant mite species were Leptotrombidium pallidum (52.6%), Leptotrombiduim scutellare (27.1%), Leptotrombidium palpale (8.2%), Leptotrombidium orientale (5.6%), and Neotrombicula tamiyai (1.7%). However, the proportions of L. scutellare in southern areas, including endemic provinces such as Jeollabuk-Do (34.3%), Jeollanam-Do (49.0%), and Gyeongsangnam-Do (88%), were relatively higher than in central Korean regions where L. pallidum was predominant. In autumn, the ratio of L. scutellare increased to 42% while the ratio of L. pallidum decreased. The geographical distribution map of the L. scutellare chigger index was identical to the incidence pattern of scrub typhus, whereas those of overall mites and L. pallidum showed no relationship with case incidence patterns. Distribution mapping analysis shows an identical geographical distribution of L. scutellare and epidemic incidence of scrub typhus in South Korea. L. pallidum could be another vector at all other parts of the Korean peninsula, including the eastern and northern regions that have a low level of scrub typhus incidence.

Here we present a simple and fast method to reliably image polarization charges using charge gradient microscopy (CGM). We collected the current from the grounded CGM probe while scanning a periodically poled lithium niobate single crystal and single-crystal LiTaO3 thin film on the Cr electrode. We observed current signals at the domains and domain walls originating from the displacement current and the relocation or removal of surface charges, which enabled us to visualize the ferroelectric domains at a scan frequency above 78 Hz over 10 μm. We envision that CGM can be used in high-speed ferroelectric domain imaging and piezoelectric energy-harvesting devices.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia (PHP Ia) is a disorder characterized by multiform hormonal resistance including parathyroid hormone (PTH) resistance and Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO). It is caused by heterozygous inactivating mutations within the Gs alpha-encoding GNAS exons. A 9-year-old boy presented with clinical and laboratory abnormalities including hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, PTH resistance, multihormone resistance and AHO (round face, short stature, obesity, brachydactyly and osteoma cutis) which were typical of PHP Ia. He had a history of repeated convulsive episodes that started from the age of 2 months. A cranial computed tomography scan showed bilateral calcifications in the basal ganglia and his intelligence quotient testing indicated mild mental retardation. Family history revealed that the patient's maternal relatives, including his grandmother and 2 of his mother's siblings, had features suggestive of AHO. Sequencing of the GNAS gene of the patient identified a heterozygous nonsense mutation within exon 11 (c.637 C>T). The C>T transversion results in an amino acid substitution from Gln to stop codon at codon 213 (p.Gln213(*)). To our knowledge, this is a novel mutation in GNAS.

Transovarial transmission of Orientia tsutsugamushi in colonies of Leptotrombidium palpale was studied in the parent and F1 and F2 generations. Both transovarial transmission and filial infection rates were 100% in the parent and F1 generations of Leptotrombidium palpale. The filial infection rate in the F1 generation was 100%, but it declined to 94.3% in the F2 progeny. The sex ratio of the F1 generation from infected L. palpale was 1∶0.8 (male:female) and the proportion of males was relatively high. This study is the first to report on the transovarial transmission of O. tsutsugamushi in L. palpale. High transovarial transmission rates in L. palpale suggest that this species might be one of the major vectors of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea.

Ultrafine, uniform nanostructures with excellent functionalities can be formed by self-assembly of block copolymer (BCP) thin films. However, extension of their geometric variability is not straightforward due to their limited thin film morphologies. Here, we report that unusual and spontaneous positioning between host and guest BCP microdomains, even in the absence of H-bond linkages, can create hybridized morphologies that cannot be formed from a neat BCP. Our self-consistent field theory (SCFT) simulation results theoretically support that the precise registration of a spherical BCP microdomain (guest, B-b-C) at the center of a perforated lamellar BCP nanostructure (host, A-b-B) can energetically stabilize the blended morphology. As an exemplary application of the hybrid nanotemplate, a nanoring-type Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) phase-change memory device with an extremely low switching current is demonstrated. These results suggest the possibility of a new pathway to construct more diverse and complex nanostructures using controlled blending of various BCPs.

The aim of this study is to assess the association between crown-rump length (CRL) measured before the 10th gestational week and birth weight. Results from 316 transvaginal ultrasonography scans at the 46th, 53rd, 60th, 67th, and 74th days of pregnancy were compared in low birth weight (LBW) versus normal birth weight groups. A positive correlation between CRL and birth weight was observed when CRL was measured at days 60, 67, and 74. CRL measured on the 67th day of pregnancy was significantly smaller in the LBW group than in the normal birth weight group. A cut-off value of CRL=26.5 mm measured at day 67 has the highest power to predict LBW.

Objectives: In this study, we demonstrated that TBEV-infected ticks have been distributed in the ROK, combined with our previous results. These results suggest that TBEV may exist in the ROK, and H. longicornis, H. flava, and I. nipponensis may be potential vectors of TBEV. In addition, these results emphasize the need for further epidemiological research of TBEV., Methods: We examined for the presence of RNA of TBEV by reverse transcriptase-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nested PCR) using ixodid ticks captured in 25 localities of 10 provinces. Ticks were collected by the flagging and dragging method or using sentinel BG traps at forests, grass thickets, and grassland. A total of 13,053 ticks belonging to two genera and four species were collected and pooled (1292 pools), according to collection site, species of tick, and developmental stage., Results: Among 1292 pools, the envelope (E) protein gene of TBEV was detected using RT-nested PCR in 10 pools (3 pools of the 1,331 adult ticks and 7 pools of the 11,169 nymph ticks) collected from Gangwon-do province, Jeonrabuk-do province, and Jeju Island. The minimum infection rates for TBEV of Haemaphysalis longicornis, Haemaphysalis flava, and Ixodes nipponensis were 0.06%, 0.17%, and 2.38%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on the partial E protein gene was performed to identify relationships between the TBEV strains. This showed that 10 Korean strains clustered with the Western subtype., Conclusion: In this study, we investigated the prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in ixodid ticks from various regions of the Republic of Korea (ROK) during 2011-2012 to identify whether TBEV is circulating and to determine the endemic regions of TBEV.

The purpose of this study is to investigated the mechanism of pharmacological action of local anesthetic and provide the basic information about the development of new effective local anesthetics. Fluorescent probe techniques were used to evaluate the effect of lidocaine·HCl on the physical properties (transbilayer asymmetric lateral and rotational mobility, annular lipid fluidity and protein distribution) of synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles (SPMV) isolated from bovine cerebral cortex, and liposomes of total lipids (SPMVTL) and phospholipids (SPMVPL) extracted from the SPMV. An experimental procedure was used based on selective quenching of 1,3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane (Py-3-Py) and 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) by trinitrophenyl groups, and radiationless energy transfer from the tryptophans of membrane proteins to Py-3-Py. Lidocaine·HCl increased the bulk lateral and rotational mobility of neuronal and model membrane lipid bilayes, and had a greater fluidizing effect on the inner monolayer than the outer monolayer. Lidocaine·HCl increased annular lipid fluidity in SPMV lipid bilayers. It also caused membrane proteins to cluster. The most important finding of this study is that there is far greater increase in annular lipid fluidity than that in lateral and rotational mobilities by lidocaine·HCl. Lidocaine·HCl alters the stereo or dynamics of the proteins in the lipid bilayers by combining with lipids, especially with the annular lipids. In conclusion, the present data suggest that lidocaine, in addition to its direct interaction with proteins, concurrently interacts with membrane lipids, fluidizing the membrane, and thus inducing conformational changes of proteins known to be intimately associated with membrane lipid.

Active nanophotonic devices are attractive due to their low-power consumption, ultrafast modulation speed and high-density integration. Although electrical operation is required for practical implementation of these devices, it is not straightforward to introduce a proper current path into such a wavelength-scale nanostructure without affecting the optical properties. For example, to demonstrate electrically driven nanolasers, complicated fabrication techniques have been used thus far. Here we report an electrically driven microdisk laser using a transparent graphene electrode. Current is injected efficiently through the graphene sheet covering the top surface of the microdisk cavity, and, for the first time, lasing operation was achieved with a low-threshold current of ~300 μA at room temperature. In addition, we measured significant electroluminescence from a graphene-contact subwavelength-scale single nanopillar structure. This work represents a new paradigm for the practical applications of integrated photonic systems, by conformally mounting graphene on the complex surfaces of non-planar three-dimensional nanostructures.

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare condition originally described by Hutchinson in 1886. Death result from cardiac complications in the majority of cases and usually occurs at average age of thirteen years. A 4-yr old boy had typical clinical findings such as short stature, craniofacial disproportion, alopecia, prominent scalp veins and sclerodermatous skin. This abnormal appearance began at age of 1 yr. On serological and hormonal evaluation, all values are within normal range. He was neurologically intact with motor and mental development. An echocardiogram showed calcification of aortic and mitral valves. Hypertrophy of internal layer at internal carotid artery suggesting atherosclerosis was found by carotid doppler sonography. He is on low dose aspirin to prevent thromboembolic episodes and on regular follow up. Gene study showed typical G608G (GGC- > GGT) point mutation at exon 11 in LMNA gene. This is a rare case of Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome confirmed by genetic analysis in Korea.

Rectal schwannoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor originating from Schwann's cell. We experienced a 61- year-old female patient who complained of blood tinged and narrow calibered stool for several years, and found a 4 cm sized submucosal tumor with a central ulcer on the rectal wall during colonoscopy. She underwent transanal excision. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of fasciculating bundles of spindle cells with benign nuclear atypia and peripheral lymphoid cell cuffing. Tumor cells showed a diffuse strong immunoreactivity to S-100 protein, but not stain for CD 34, desmin and smooth muscle actin. This is the first case report of rectal schwannoma in Korea.

Icodextrin, a glucose polymer, is widely used as an alternative to glucose as the osmotic agent in peritoneal dialysis (PD). We describe a case of a continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patient who developed severe cutaneous hypersensitivity after initiation of icodextrin PD solution. Erythematous skin lesions gradually disappeared after discontinuation of icodextrin PD solution. Although the safety and efficacy of icodextrin PD solution is well documented, clinicians should be mindful of the possibility of severe adverse cutaneous reactions to icodextrin PD solution.

ZnO/Zn0.8Mg0.2O coaxial nanorod heterostructures were prepared by employing catalyst-free metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy, and their structural and photoluminescent (PL) properties were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and temperature-dependent PL spectroscopy. TEM images show that ZnO/Zn0.8Mg0.2O layers were epitaxially grown on the entire surfaces of the ZnO nanorods and the ZnO nanorod diameters as a core material were as small as 9 +/- 2 nm. A dominant PL peak was observed at 3.316 eV, from room-temperature PL spectra of ZnO/Zn0.8Mg0.2O coaxial nanorod heterostructures with ZnO core diameters of 9 nm, indicating a PL blue shift of 30 meV, which resulted from a quantum confinement effect along the radial direction in ZnO nanorods. Furthermore, temperature-dependent PL properties of the coaxial nanorod heterostructures were investigated, showing much higher PL intensity for the coaxial nanorod heterostructures than that of bare ZnO nanorods at room temperature. The origin of the enhanced PL intensity and reduced thermal quenching for the coaxial nanorod heterostructures is also discussed.

The objectives of this study were to explore whether ovarian vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in mice can be regulated by IL-6 (interleukin-6), angiotensin II, FSH, and hCG; and to test whether the mouse ovarian VEGF expression can result in angiogenesis. The ICR mice were sacrificed, and their ovaries were recovered. Recovered ovaries were treated with IL-6, angiotensin II, FSH, and hCG separately and incubated for 24 hours in alpha-MEM. Expression of mRNA and protein of VEGF were assessed by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. The resulting angiogenesis was evaluated through immunohistochemical analysis for CD34. Treatment of mice ovaries with IL-6, FSH, and hCG resulted in a significant increase of VEGF mRNA, and IL-6 was the most potent inducer of VEGF. IL-6 and FSH resulted in increased neovascularization in the follicular phase of mouse ovaries. In contrast, angiotensin II could not increase VEGF expression or neovascularization. We documented an in vitro increase in VEGF expression by IL-6, FSH, and hCG; and reaffirmed that the proliferative response of murine ovarian endothelial cells paralleled an increase of VEGF expression.

Purpose: To investigate the difference of in vitro and in vivo grown oocytes, we compared maturation, fertilization, development, and maternal gene expression from both in vitro and in vivo grown mouse oocytes., Methods: The preantral follicles isolated from 12-day-old mice were cultured on Transwell-COL membrane inserts. After culture, maturation, fertilization, and developmental rates were assessed. RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) was performed to examine the expression of beta-actin, GDF-9, and IGF-II in matured oocytes., Results: No difference in the nuclear maturation was detected between in vitro and in vivo grown oocytes, but the mean oocyte diameter of the in vitro group was smaller than that of the in vivo group. The fertilization rate was significantly lower in the in vitro group than in the in vivo group (p < 0.05). The capacities of in vitro grown oocyte to cleave and develop to blastocysts were significantly lower than those of the in vivo grown oocytes (p < 0.001). Moreover, blastocyst of in vitro group had fewer total cells than those of in vivo group (p < 0.05). In regards to the expression of genes in mature oocytes, growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9) expression was similar between the two groups, but beta-actin was significantly reduced in the in vitro group compared to the in vivo group. Particularly, the expression of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) was not found in the in vitro grown oocytes., Conclusions: These results showed that in vitro grown oocytes did not have the same developmental capacity as in vivo grown oocytes. We assume that the aberrant expression of maternal-derived genes in the in vitro grown oocytes may cause the poor embryo viability.

Since the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPT) is largely depended on the physician's suspicion in respect of the disease, we believed that it would be worthwhile to scrutinize the clinical characteristics of EPT. Thus, here we present retrospectively evaluated clinical manifestations of patients who were diagnosed as EPT cases in a tertiary referral care hospital. Medical records of 312 patients, diagnosed as having EPT at Yongdong Severance hospital from January 1997 to December 1999, were reviewed retrospectively. In total 312 patients, 149 (47.8%) males and 163 (52.2%) females aged from 13 years to 87 years, were included into this study. The most common site of the involvement was pleura (35.6%). The patients complained of localized symptoms (72.4%) more frequently than systemic symptoms (52.2%). The most common symptom was pain at the infected site (48.1%). Leukocytosis, anemia, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were found in 12.8%, 50.3%, 79.3% and 63.1% of the patients, respectively. Twenty-four percent of the patients had underlying medical illnesses such as, diabetes mellitus or liver cirrhosis, or were over 60 years old. In 67.3% of patients, tuberculosis was suspected at the initial visit. However, tuberculosis was microbiologically proven in only 23.7% of the patients. The time interval from the symptom onset to the diagnosis varied, with the mean duration of the period 96 days. Pulmonary parenchymal abnormal lesions were found in 133 patients (42.6%) on chest radiographs. EPT has a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, so it is difficult to diagnose it. Based on our studies, only 11.2% of the patients were confirmed as EPT. So it is important that the physician who first examines the patient should have a high degree of suspicion based on the chest radiography, localized or systemic symptoms and several laboratory parameters reviewed in this study.

Objective: To assess the effect of a microdose gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist on the LH, FSH, and E2 secretion in normal menstruating women., Design: Prospective study., Setting: Tertiary teaching hospital., Patient(s): Five normal menstruating women., Intervention(s): Five microg of triptorelin was injected daily in 5 women for 7 days beginning from the cycle day 3. In the next cycle, the same amount of triptorelin was injected into the same women daily for 3 days., Main Outcome Measure(s): Serial serum FSH, LH, and E2 levels., Result(s): The FSH levels peaked (27.53 +/- 6.34 IU/L) after 5 hours, and the LH levels peaked (34.35 +/- 7.81 IU/L) by 4 hours. The increased gonadotropin levels persisted even after the second and third day of the GnRH-agonist injections, although the peak levels were not as high as observed with the first injection (19.56 IU/L in the second day, 9.15 IU/L in the third day for FSH; 32.18 IU/L in the second day, 13.59 IU/L in the third day for LH). The down-regulation of gonadotropins was established in 4 days. When the GnRH-agonist was administered for 7 days, the E2 level began to increase 6 days after the last injection. When the GnRH-agonist was administered for 3 days, the E2 level began to increase 3 days after the last injection., Conclusion(s): Pituitary down-regulation could be achieved even with a microdose of GnRH agonist. The increased level of gonadotropins persisted for 3 days at this dose. The duration of the down-regulation was influenced by the duration of GnRH-agonist administration.
