1. Work Ethic Scale for Middle School Students.

Abstract

A sample of 1,239 students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades of 3 public schools used a "yes" or "no" format to respond to a 12-item Work Ethic Scale (WES) designed to measure students' intrinsic and extrinsic valuing of work. Analysis shows that: (1) the WES was minimally related to a measure of social desirability; (2) item-remainder correlations were between 0.20 and 0.46; (3) the internal consistency was 0.70; (4) WES scores were significantly related to achievement and work-habits ratings; (5) the negatively worded WES items were more strongly related to criterion measures than were the positively worded items; and (6) the WES consisted of two empirical factors (utility of work and commitment to hard work). Demographic comparisons revealed that girls scored higher than boys on the WES, that European Americans scored higher than Hispanic Americans, but not higher than African Americans, and that eighth graders scored higher than sixth and seventh graders. Abstract

This study intends to develop web-based information literacy program, analyze learning effects and to suggest a model case to those who wants to develop a web-based information literacy program in the future. For this purpose, we analyze undergraduate students` needs, design and develop a web-based information literacy program, and analyze the practical effects of the web-based information literacy program. As a result of research, we found out that both web-based and face-to-face information literacy program are similarly effective in learning and satisfactory to students.

28. Synergistic Action of Hepatocyte Nuclear Factors 3 and 6 onCYP2C12Gene Expression and Suppression by Growth Hormone-activated STAT5b

Abstract

Growth hormone (GH) exerts sexually dimorphic effects on liver gene transcription through its sex-dependent temporal pattern of pituitary hormone secretion. CYP2C12encodes a female-specific rat liver P450 steroid hydroxylase whose expression is activated by continuous GH stimulation of hepatocytes. Presently, we investigated the role of liver-enriched and GH-regulated transcription factors in the activation of CYP2C12gene expression in GH-stimulated liver cells. Transcription of a CYP2C12promoter-luciferase reporter gene in transfected HepG2 cells was activated 15–40-fold by the liver-enriched hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF) 3α, HNF3β, and HNF6. Synergistic interactions leading to an ∼300-fold activation of the promoter by HNF3β in combination with HNF6 were observed. 5′-Deletion analysis localized the HNF6 response to a single 5′-proximal 96-nucleotide segment. By contrast, the stimulatory effects of HNF3α and HNF3β were attributable to five distinct regions within the 1.6-kilobase CYP2C12proximal promoter. GH activation of the signal transducer and transcriptional activator STAT5b, which proceeds efficiently in male but not female rat liver, inhibited CYP2C12promoter activation by HNF3β and HNF6, despite the absence of a classical STAT5-binding site. The female-specific pattern of CYP2C12expression is thus proposed to reflect the positive synergistic action in female liver of liver-enriched and GH-regulated transcription factors, such as HNF3β and HNF6, coupled with a dominant inhibitory effect of GH-activated STAT5b that is manifest in males.
