Abstract

This paper investigates properties of the class of graphs based on exchangeable point processes. We provide asymptotic expressions for the number of edges, number of nodes, and degree distributions, identifying four regimes: (i) a dense regime, (ii) a sparse, almost dense regime, (iii) a sparse regime with power-law behaviour, and (iv) an almost extremely sparse regime. We show that, under mild assumptions, both the global and local clustering coefficients converge to constants which may or may not be the same. We also derive a central limit theorem for subgraph counts and for the number of nodes. Finally, we propose a class of models within this framework where one can separately control the latent structure and the global sparsity/power-law properties of the graph.

Abstract

Bayesian methods constitute a popular approach to perform statistical inference and predict phenomena of interest. Surely, part of the popularity of the Bayesian paradigm can be linked to their intuitive core idea: to take advantage of the user's prior knowledge and integrate it in the statistical procedure. The result of this synergy is the posterior distribution, focal point of Bayesian inference and instrument to quantify the uncertainty of the estimation. This thesis collects the work done as a research student on statistical models, built with the tools of Bayesian nonparametrics, to describe power-law distributed data. The motivation of the proposed models are to be found in two different fields of application: complex networks and privacy assessment. After the introduction, in the first half of the thesis I concentrate on the proposal and analysis of models for networks, the mathematical objects that describe relations among entities by representing them as nodes connected through links. Power-laws usually appear in real-world networks as the distribution function of the degrees, namely the number of links of the nodes. The two pieces of work presented belong to the graphex process framework, a flexible generating process which allows to mimic empirically observed networks characteristics. Chapter 2 fits into this framework and extends the original proposal of Caron and Fox (2017) to provide a novel modelling approach to describe sparse networks with spatial structure or other covariates. An approximate inference strategy is provided and tested on simulated data. The paper presented in chapter 3 casts light on the asymptotic properties of networks generated under the graphex process, proving the desirable properties of sparsity, power-law degree distributions, clustering and two central limit theorems. The second half of the thesis is devoted to the development of statistical methods to quantify the risk of disclosure, which arises whenever datasets with records of individuals are published: an intruder could match the data with prior information and disclose the identity, and therefore the sensitive features, of a person. Chapter 4 develops an estimator to quantify this risk using the Pitman-Yor process, a popular prior on probability distributions that has a distinguishable power-law tail. A closed form posterior distribution of the estimator is provided in a convenient mixture representation, and experiments on both simulated and real data show the effectiveness of the method. Chapter 5 deals with the estimation of the same risk under no distributional assumptions, using a fully nonparametric method. The estimator is extremely easy to understand, fast to compute and has provable guarantees of optimality. Chapter 6 concludes the thesis with a final summary and some proposals to extend the current work towards new research directions.

Abstract

Calycophyllum spruceanum (Benth) is a tree of the Amazon region popularly known as 'mulateiro', whose wood has multiple uses, from energy to folk medicine. Thus, it is extremely important to evaluate desirable characteristics, through quick methods that meet the principles of green chemistry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technique for the prediction of dry matter, carbon and ash contents and identification of parts of C. spruceanum trees. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression model applied within the spectral range of 400-2498 nm proved to be adequate to estimate the dry matter, carbon and ash contents in C. spruceanum sapwood and bark samples, with R2 above 0.90 in both calibration and validation. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis techniques when applied to the spectra were able to efficiently separate bark from sapwood. The results show that the NIR technique developed can be used in the determination of dry matter, carbon and ash contents in C. spruceanum, in addition to its discriminatory power in the separation of parts of the plant. Abstract

Background The best treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes in whom treatment with metformin alone fails to achieve adequate glycaemic control is debated. We aimed to compare the long-term effects of pioglitazone versus sulfonylureas, given in addition to metformin, on cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods TOSCA.IT was a multicentre, randomised, pragmatic clinical trial, in which patients aged 50–75 years with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with metformin monotherapy (2–3 g per day) were recruited from 57 diabetes clinics in Italy. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1), by permuted blocks randomisation (block size 10), stratified by site and previous cardiovascular events, to add-on pioglitazone (15–45 mg) or a sulfonylurea (5–15 mg glibenclamide, 2–6 mg glimepiride, or 30–120 mg gliclazide, in accordance with local practice). The trial was unblinded, but event adjudicators were unaware of treatment assignment. The primary outcome, assessed with a Cox proportional-hazards model, was a composite of first occurrence of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, or urgent coronary revascularisation, assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population (all randomly assigned participants with baseline data available and without any protocol violations in relation to inclusion or exclusion criteria). This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00700856. Findings Between Sept 18, 2008, and Jan 15, 2014, 3028 patients were randomly assigned and included in the analyses. 1535 were assigned to pioglitazone and 1493 to sulfonylureas (glibenclamide 24 [2%], glimepiride 723 [48%], gliclazide 745 [50%]). At baseline, 335 (11%) participants had a previous cardiovascular event. The study was stopped early on the basis of a futility analysis after a median follow-up of 57·3 months. Abstract

“Terra terra” è una metafora italiana che mi ha sempre attratto per la capacità di rendere conto della condizione contadina e del lavoro agricolo: visualizza il guardare basso, le condizioni spesso dipendenti di chi lavora in agricoltura, proprio raddoppiando la presenza della terra come attore principale. Simile a down to earth in inglese, nella svalutazione del lavoro agricolo come dipendenza e ignoranza, è venuto a definire la “semplicità” del lavoro con la terra, rivalutato oggi all’interno delle questioni ambientali e dopo decenni di abbandono del lavoro agricolo, e non solo in Italia. Questa metafora porta però con sé un distanziamento, un’ “emancipazione” dalle relazioni atmosferiche e da vicoli ambientali, che invece hanno sempre costituito la base dei saperi rurali locali nell’orientare le pratiche lavorative, nei limiti e potenzialità delle risorse: un distanziamento dalle relazione dal tempo “su nell’aria” (Strauss and Orlove, 2003) che oggi è amplificato nell’immaginario comune dai cambiamenti climatici e atmosferici, dove le stagioni non propongono più regolarità e uniformità e sono alla base di un disorientamento e spaesamento, tanto dei piccoli agricoltori quanto, seppur più diniegato, della società in generale. L’ambiente cambia, tanto più a partire dalla dimensione più aleatoria, invisibile, imprevedibile dall’alto, un aspetto che lo rende oggi impensabile e perturbante. Se il rapporto con l’atmosfera è sempre stato ambivalente, oggi è centrale nel ripensare e comprendere i rapporti tra società e ambiente e pone in luce le contraddizioni dei nostri modelli “materiali” schiacciati a terra e sconnessi dal tempo atmosferico. Invertire la metafora quindi, con down to air meglio esprime la antica connessione incorporata nei saperi locali dell’intima connessione tra saperi dell’incertezza e della relazionalità con il tempo e pratiche, queste sì, tutte “terra terra” ma che si orientano guardando in alto, sentendo il vento, o la reazione degli insetti per c

Abstract

A shift towards younger age at onset of diabetes in susceptible people has been suggested as a possible explanation for the increasing temporal trend in incidence of type 1 diabetes. We aimed to test this hypothesis by assessing trends in incidence rates in the period 1984-2004 in children and young adults in Northern Italy.The study bases were: (1) children resident in the Province of Turin in the period 1984-2004 and in the remaining areas of the Piedmont Region in the period 1990-2004; and (2) young adults (15-29 years) resident in the Province of Turin in the period 1984-2003. Temporal trends in rates were analysed using Poisson regression models.A total of 1,773 incident cases were identified. Overall incidence rates/100,000 person-years in the age groups 0-14 and 15-29 years were 11.3 (95% CI 10.7-12.0) and 7.1 (95% CI 6.6-7.7), respectively, with sex differences among young adults only (incidence rate ratio [IRR] in males vs females 1.41 [95% CI 1.20-1.64]). Average annual increases in incidence rates were similar in children and young adults at 3.3% (95% CI 2.5-4.1). Compared with the period 1984-89, in 2000-2004 a 60% higher risk was found in both age 0-14 years (IRR 1.60, 95% CI 1.31-1.95) and 15-29 years (IRR 1.57, 95% CI 1.26-1.96) groups. The Poisson modelling showed no interaction between calendar period and age at onset.Incidence of type 1 diabetes in Northern Italy is increasing over time in both children and young adults, not supporting the hypothesis of a shift towards younger age as the main explanation for the increasing temporal trend in children.

Foram analisadas amostras de quiabo dos municípios de Caruaru e Vitória de Santo Antão, em Pernambuco, assim como nos municípios de Ceará-Mirim, Macaíba e Extremoz no estado do Rio Grande do Norte. A aplicação de dois métodos de análise exploratória de dados: Análise de Componentes principais - PCA e Análise de Agrupamentos Hierárquicos - HCA permitiu a discriminação geográfica do quiabo proveniente dos dois estados. Samples of okra from Caruaru and Vitória of Santo Antão, in the State of Pernambuco, and Ceará-Mirim, Macaíba and Extremoz in the State of Rio Grande do Norte have been analysed. Two different methods were applied in the data treatment allowing to geographically discriminate samples from different origins: Principal Component Analysis - PCA and Hierarquical Cluster Analysis - HCA.

Abstract

Objective: To determine to what extent plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) values influence 5-year all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in type 2 diabetic individuals, independently of albumin excretion rate (AER) and other cardiovascular risk factors, and its incremental usefulness for predicting individual risk of mortality.Research Design and Methods: Measurements of CRP were performed in 2,381 of 3,249 (73.3%) subjects as part of the population-based Casale Monferrato Study. Its association with 5-year all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was assessed with multivariate Cox proportional hazards modeling. The C statistic and measures of calibration and global fit were also assessed.Results: Results are based on 496 deaths in 11.717 person-years of observations (median follow-up 5.4 years). With respect to subjects with CRP < or =3 mg/l, those with higher values had an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 1.51 (95% CI 1.18-1.92) for all-cause mortality and 1.44 (0.99-2.08) for cardiovascular mortality. In normoalbuminuric subjects, respective HRs of CRP were 1.56 (1.13-2.15) and 1.65 (1.00-2.74), AER being neither a modifier nor a confounder of CRP association. In analysis limited to diabetic subjects without cardiovascular disease (CVD), adjusted HRs were 1.67 (1.24-2.24) for all-cause mortality and 1.36 (0.83-2.24) for cardiovascular mortality. The improvement in individual risk assessment was marginal when measured with various statistical measures of model discrimination, calibration, and global fit.Conclusions: CRP measurement is independently associated with short-term mortality risk in type 2 diabetic individuals, even in normoalbuminuric subjects and in those without a previous diagnosis of CVD. Its clinical usefulness in individual assessment of 5-year risk of mortality, however, is limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Protection against disclosure is a legal and ethical obligation for agencies releasing microdata files for public use. Consider a microdata sample of size $n$ from a finite population of size $\bar{n}=n+\lambda n$, with $\lambda>0$, such that each record contains two disjoint types of information: identifying categorical information and sensitive information. Any decision about releasing data is supported by the estimation of measures of disclosure risk, which are functionals of the number of sample records with a unique combination of values of identifying variables. The most common measure is arguably the number $\tau_{1}$ of sample unique records that are population uniques. In this paper, we first study nonparametric estimation of $\tau_{1}$ under the Poisson abundance model for sample records. We introduce a class of linear estimators of $\tau_{1}$ that are simple, computationally efficient and scalable to massive datasets, and we give uniform theoretical guarantees for them. In particular, we show that they provably estimate $\tau_{1}$ all of the way up to the sampling fraction $(\lambda+1)^{-1}\propto (\log n)^{-1}$, with vanishing normalized mean-square error (NMSE) for large $n$. We then establish a lower bound for the minimax NMSE for the estimation of $\tau_{1}$, which allows us to show that: i) $(\lambda+1)^{-1}\propto (\log n)^{-1}$ is the smallest possible sampling fraction; ii) estimators' NMSE is near optimal, in the sense of matching the minimax lower bound, for large $n$. This is the main result of our paper, and it provides a precise answer to an open question about the feasibility of nonparametric estimation of $\tau_{1}$ under the Poisson abundance model and for a sampling fraction $(\lambda+1)^{-1}

Abstract

“Terra terra” è una metafora italiana che mi ha sempre attratto per la capacità di rendere conto della condizione contadina e del lavoro agricolo: visualizza il guardare basso, le condizioni spesso dipendenti di chi lavora in agricoltura, proprio raddoppiando la presenza della terra come attore principale. Simile a down to earth in inglese, nella svalutazione del lavoro agricolo come dipendenza e ignoranza, è venuto a definire la “semplicità” del lavoro con la terra, rivalutato oggi all’interno delle questioni ambientali e dopo decenni di abbandono del lavoro agricolo, e non solo in Italia. Questa metafora porta però con sé un distanziamento, un’ “emancipazione” dalle relazioni atmosferiche e da vicoli ambientali, che invece hanno sempre costituito la base dei saperi rurali locali nell’orientare le pratiche lavorative, nei limiti e potenzialità delle risorse: un distanziamento dalle relazione dal tempo “su nell’aria” (Strauss and Orlove, 2003) che oggi è amplificato nell’immaginario comune dai cambiamenti climatici e atmosferici, dove le stagioni non propongono più regolarità e uniformità e sono alla base di un disorientamento e spaesamento, tanto dei piccoli agricoltori quanto, seppur più diniegato, della società in generale. L’ambiente cambia, tanto più a partire dalla dimensione più aleatoria, invisibile, imprevedibile dall’alto, un aspetto che lo rende oggi impensabile e perturbante. Se il rapporto con l’atmosfera è sempre stato ambivalente, oggi è centrale nel ripensare e comprendere i rapporti tra società e ambiente e pone in luce le contraddizioni dei nostri modelli “materiali” schiacciati a terra e sconnessi dal tempo atmosferico. Invertire la metafora quindi, con down to air meglio esprime la antica connessione incorporata nei saperi locali dell’intima connessione tra saperi dell’incertezza e della relazionalità con il tempo e pratiche, queste sì, tutte “terra terra” ma che si orientano guardando in alto, sentendo il vento, o la reazione degli insetti per condividere sistemi di significati sociali ed ecologici assieme. Il calendario atmosferico palestinese, sopravvissuto in racconti orali dei rifugiati ma tanto più nelle pratiche agricole di agricoltori nella West Bank, è un esempio storico di relazione culturale all’imprevedibilità e variabilità del tempo, attraverso sistemi di significato, rituali, partiche lavorative co-involte nell’ambiente atmosferico e nei suoi cambiamenti e capricci, orientati storicamente in Medio Oriente a definire i ritmi dell’aridità e della piovosità come spartiacque fondamentale.

19. Diaphragm ultrasound as a new index of discontinuation from mechanical ventilation.

Abstract

Background: Predictive indexes of weaning from mechanical ventilation are often inaccurate. Among the many indexes used in clinical practice, the rapid shallow breathing index is one of the most accurate. We evaluated a new weaning index consisting in the diaphragm thickening fraction (DTF) assessed by ultrasound., Methods: Forty-six patients were prospectively enrolled. All patients were ventilated in pressure support through a tracheostomy tube. Patients underwent a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) when they met all the following criteria: FiO2 < 0.5, PEEP ≤5 cmH2O, PaO2/FiO2 > 200, respiratory rate <30 breaths per minute, absence of fever, alert and cooperative, and hemodynamic stability without vaso-active therapy support. During the trial, the right hemi-diaphragm was visualized in the zone of apposition using a 10-MHz linear ultrasound probe. The patient was then instructed to perform breathing to total lung capacity (TLC) and then exhaling to residual volume (RV). Diaphragm thickness was recorded at TLC and RV, and the DTF was calculated as percentage from the following formula: Thickness at end inspiration - Thickness at end expiration / Thickness at end expiration. Also, the rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI) was calculated. Weaning failure was defined as the inability to maintain spontaneous breathing for at least 48 h, without any form of ventilatory support., Results: A significant difference between diaphragm thickness at TLC and RV was observed both in patients who succeeded SBT and patients who failed. DTF was significantly different between patients who failed and patients who succeeded SBT. A cutoff value of a DTF >36% was associated with a successful SBT with a sensitivity of 0.82, a specificity of 0.88, a positive predictive value (PPV) of 0.92, and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 0.75. By comparison, RSBI <105 had a sensitivity of 0.93, a specificity of 0.88, a PPV of 0.93, and a NPV of 0.88 for determining SBT success., Conclusions: This study shows that in our cohort of patients, the assessment of DTF by diaphragm ultrasound may perform similarly to other weaning indexes. If validated by other studies, this method may be used in clinical practice.

Abstract

Objective: A protective effect of residual beta-cell function on microvascular complications of type 1 diabetes has been suggested. Our aim was to retrospectively evaluate the association of fasting plasma C-peptide values with micro- and macrovascular complications., Research Design and Methods: We recruited a clinic-based cohort of 471 type 1 diabetic patients born after 1945 and cared for in the period 1994-2004. Centralized measurements and standardized procedures of ascertainment of micro- and macrovascular complications were employed. Individual cumulative averages of A1C up to 2007 were calculated., Results: Residual beta-cell secretion was detected even many years after diabetes diagnosis. In multivariate linear regression analysis, fasting plasma C-peptide values were positively associated with age at diagnosis (beta = 0.02; P < 0.0001) and triglycerides (beta = 0.20; P = 0.05) and inversely associated with diabetes duration (beta = -0.03; P < 0.0001) and HDL cholesterol (beta = -0.006; P = 0.03). The final model explained 21% of fasting C-peptide variability. With respect to fasting C-peptide values in the lowest tertile (<0.06 nmol/l), higher values were associated with lower prevalence of microvascular complications (odds ratio [OR] 0.59 [95% CI 0.37-0.94]) independently of age, sex, diabetes duration, individual cumulative A1C average during the study period, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. No association was evident with macrovascular complications (0.77 [0.38-1.58])., Conclusions: Our study shows an independent protective effect of residual beta-cell function on the development of microvascular complications in type 1 diabetes, suggesting the potential beneficial effect of treatment that allows the preservation of even modest beta-cell function over time.
