Survivors’ engagement with recommended follow-up care to minimize these risks is suboptimal, with many barriers commonly reported. This scoping review aims to summarize the barriers to accessing follow-up care, using the dimensions of Levesque’s framework for accessing healthcare. We retrieved quantitative studies addressing barriers and facilitators to accessing survivorship care in CAYA survivors from PubMed, EMBASE and CINAHL. Data was categorized into the five healthcare access dimensions outlined in Levesque’s framework: i) approachability, ii) acceptability, iii) availability and accommodation, iv) affordability, and v) appropriateness. We identified 27 quantitative studies in our review. Commonly reported barriers to accessing care included a lack of survivor and provider knowledge of cancer survivorship, poor health beliefs, low personal salience to engage in follow-up care, high out-of-pocket costs and survivors living long distances from clinical services. Many studies reported increased barriers to care during the transition from paediatric to adult-oriented healthcare services, including a lack of developmentally appropriate services, lack of appointment reminders, and a poorly defined transition process. Healthcare-related self-efficacy was identified as an important facilitator to accessing follow-up care. The transition from pediatric to adult-oriented healthcare services is a challenging time for childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors. Optimizing CAYAs’ ability to access high-quality survivorship care thus requires careful consideration of the quality and acceptability of services, alongside financial and physical/practical barriers (eg distance from available services, appointment-booking mechanisms). Levesque’s model highlighted several areas where evidence is well established (eg financial barriers) or lacking (eg factors associated with engagement in follow-up care) which are useful to understand barriers and facilitators that impact access to survivorship for CAYA cancer survivors, as well as guiding areas for further evaluation.Keywords: pediatric, adolescent and young adult, cancer, survivorship care, barriers, access to care

2. The 2023 Dengue Outbreak in Lombardy, Italy: A One-Health Perspective

Abstract

Introduction. Here we reported the virological, entomological and epidemiological characteristics of the large autochthonous outbreak of dengue (DENV) occurred in a small village of the Lombardy region (Northern Italy) during summer 2023. Methods. After the diagnosis of the first autochthonous case on 18 August 2023, public health measures, including epidemiological investigation and vector control measures, were carried out. A serological screening for DENV antibodies detection was offered to the population. In the case of positive DENV IgM, a second sample was collected to detect DENV RNA and verify seroconversion. Entomological and epidemiological investigations were also performed. A modeling analysis was conducted to estimate the dengue generation time, transmission potential, distance of transmission, and assess diagnostic delays. Results. Overall, 416 subjects participated to the screening program and 20 were identified as DENV-1 cases (15 confirmed and 5 probable). In addition, DENV-1 infection was diagnosed in 24 symptomatic subjects referred to the local Emergency Room Department for suggestive symptoms and 1 case was identified through blood donation screening. The average generation time was estimated to be 18.3 days (95% CI: 13.1-23.5 days). R0 was estimated at 1.31 (95% CI: 0.76-1.98); 90% of transmission occurred within 500m. Entomological investigations performed in 46 pools of mosquitoes revealed the presence of only one positive pool for DENV-1. Discussion. This report highlights the importance of synergic surveillance, including virological, entomological and public health measures to control the spread of arboviral infections.

Abstract

Analyses of inequalities related to prevention and cancer therapeutics/care show disparities between countries with different economic standing, and within countries with high Gross Domestic Product. The development of basic technological and biological research provides clinical and prevention opportunities that make their implementation into healthcare systems more complex, mainly due to the growth of Personalized/Precision Cancer Medicine (PCM). Initiatives like the USA-Cancer Moonshot and the EU-Mission on Cancer and Europes Beating Cancer Plan are initiated to boost cancer prevention and therapeutics/care innovation and to mitigate present inequalities. The conference organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the European Academy of Cancer Sciences discussed the inequality problem, dependent on the economic status of a country, the increasing demands for infrastructure supportive of innovative research and its implementation in healthcare and prevention programs. Establishing translational research defined as a coherent cancer research continuum is still a challenge. Research has to cover the entire continuum from basic to outcomes research for clinical and prevention modalities. Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) are of critical importance for integrating research innovations to preclinical and clinical research, as for ensuring state-of-the-art patient care within healthcare systems. International collaborative networks between CCCs are necessary to reach the critical mass of infrastructures and patients for PCM research, and for introducing prevention modalities and new treatments effectively. Outcomes and health economics research are required to assess the cost-effectiveness of new interventions, currently a missing element in the research portfolio. Data sharing and critical mass are essential for innovative research to develop PCM. Despite advances in cancer research, cancer incidence and prevalence is growing. Making cancer research infrastructures accessible for all patients, considering the increasing inequalities, requires science policy actions incentivizing research aimed at prevention and cancer therapeutics/care with an increased focus on patients needs and cost-effective healthcare.

8. Land-use changes and geo-hydrological phenomena in the Abruzzo Periadriatic Area (central Italy): The case of the Pescara River basin

Abstract

Abruzzo Periadriatic Area (Central Italy) is sadly acknowledged as highly exposed to geo-hydrological hazards, with small-to-medium size catchments and urban areas strongly affected by natural phenomena. In the present work, the Pescara River basin, hit in the past by several floods and concurrent superficial landslides due to localized and intense rain events, has been studied. A screening of morphometry, land use changes, rainfall datasets, and flooding-related effects on landscape has been carried out, both at the catchment and local scales. A morphometric and geomorphological approach was applied, supported by GIS software and implemented with literature data. It allowed us to derive insights about the interaction between land use changes and geo-hydrological phenomena. Over the past 60 years, the study area underwent increases in built-up areas from ~16 km2 in 1955 to ~67 km2 in 2019 with significant sprawl at low altitude. Rainfall datasets outlined moderate-to-low annual precipitation with occasional heavy rainfall events (>100 mm/d and 30–40 mm/h). Historical and recent events (~35 events over a 100-year period) linked to landscape and geomorphological processes were also counted. Resulting data allowed to implement knowledge about the present-day geomorphological arrangement of the basin, providing information for land management in a changing environment. These findings provide valuable insights for future urban planning, policy formulation, and sustainable development initiatives, readily available to interested stakeholders.

Abstract

This review discusses the challenges that hospitals face when caring for older patients in emergency departments and intensive care units. Beyond chronic diseases, the older person is often affected by acute events, which require, in addition to the typical knowledge of emergency medicine and anesthesia, the holistic and targeted approach of the comprehensive geriatric assessment in the emergency room and intensive care setting. With Italy’s health centers struggling to manage the increasing pressure of patients, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for a geriatric approach to address this challenge. This review outlines the Geriatric 5Ms Model of Care, which addresses five domains, and the Domain Management Model, which provides acute medical management.

Abstract

Carbon-phenolic ablators can efficiently protect space vehicles from the extreme temperatures typical of the reentry phase in a planet’s atmosphere. Their performances are attributed to the low thermal conductivity and to the decomposition of the phenolic resin. These phenomena are strongly influenced by the materials microstructure. In the present work, standard and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-modified carbon-phenolic ablators were manufactured and characterized: the influence of PVP on the final microstructure and chemistry of the ablators was studied through SEM-EDS, X-ray Microscopy (XRM) analysis and FTIR technique; the mechanical properties were evaluated through compression tests on virgin and charred samples while ablative performance of the ablators were evaluated with an oxyacetylene flame exposure test. Weak bonds between phenolic resin chains and PVP were observed. The microstructure of the ablators, both before and after the exposure to the oxyacetylene flame, is strongly influenced by the PVP addition, furthermore the addition of 10 and 20 %wt of PVP can guarantee a reduction of about 30 % of the back temperature during the oxyacetylene flame test with respect to the standard carbon-phenolic ablator. Compression tests on the manufactured ablators enlighten also an improvement in the mechanical properties for PVP-enriched ablators, in particular considering their charred state.

15. Quantifying Bone and Skin Movement in the Residual Limb-Socket Interface of Individuals With Transtibial Limb Loss Using Dynamic Stereo X-Ray: Protocol for a Lower Limb Loss Cadaver and Clinical Study

Abstract

BackgroundRelative motion between the residual limb and socket in individuals with transtibial limb loss can lead to substantial consequences that limit mobility. Although assessments of the relative motion between the residual limb and socket have been performed, there remains a substantial gap in understanding the complex mechanics of the residual limb-socket interface during dynamic activities that limits the ability to improve socket design. However, dynamic stereo x-ray (DSX) is an advanced imaging technology that can quantify 3D bone movement and skin deformation inside a socket during dynamic activities. ObjectiveThis study aims to develop analytical tools using DSX to quantify the dynamic, in vivo kinematics between the residual limb and socket and the mechanism of residual tissue deformation. MethodsA lower limb cadaver study will first be performed to optimize the placement of an array of radiopaque beads and markers on the socket, liner, and skin to simultaneously assess dynamic tibial movement and residual tissue and liner deformation. Five cadaver limbs will be used in an iterative process to develop an optimal marker setup. Stance phase gait will be simulated during each session to induce bone movement and skin and liner deformation. The number, shape, size, and placement of each marker will be evaluated after each session to refine the marker set. Once an optimal marker setup is identified, 21 participants with transtibial limb loss will be fitted with a socket capable of being suspended via both elevated vacuum and traditional suction. Participants will undergo a 4-week acclimation period and then be tested in the DSX system to track tibial, skin, and liner motion under both suspension techniques during 3 activities: treadmill walking at a self-selected speed, at a walking speed 10% faster, and during a step-down movement. The performance of the 2 suspension techniques will be evaluated by quantifying the 3D bone movement of the residual tibia with respect to the socket and quantifying liner and skin deformation at the socket-residuum interface. ResultsThis study was funded in October 2021. Cadaver testing began in January 2023. Enrollment began in February 2024. Data collection is expected to conclude in December 2025. The initial dissemination of results is expected in November 2026. ConclusionsThe successful completion of this study will help develop analytical methods for the accurate assessment of residual limb-socket motion. The results will significantly advance the understanding of the complex biomechanical interactions between the residual limb and the socket, which can aid in evidence-based clinical practice and socket prescription guidelines. This critical foundational information can aid in the development of future socket technology that has the potential to reduce secondary comorbidities that result from complications of poor prosthesis load transmission. Background The demand for healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic was excessive for less-resourced settings, with intensive care units (ICUs) taking the heaviest toll.Objective The aim was to achieve adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) use in 90% of patient encounters, to reach 90% compliance with objectives of patient flow (OPF) and to provide emotional support tools to 90% of healthcare workers (HCWs).Methods We conducted a quasi-experimental study with an interrupted time-series design in 14 ICUs in Argentina. We randomly selected adult critically ill patients admitted from July 2020 to July 2021 and active HCWs in the same period. We implemented a quality improvement collaborative (QIC) with a baseline phase (BP) and an intervention phase (IP). The QIC included learning sessions, periods of action and improvement cycles (plan-do-study-act) virtually coached by experts via platform web-based activities. Abstract Background Cyclooxygenase-2 overexpression is associated with poor outcome and resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy in ovarian cancer. We evaluated the antitumor activity and safety of the combination carboplatin plus the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib in recurrent heavily-treated OC patients. Methods Patients were administered oral celecoxib (400 mg/day) in combination with intravenous carboplatin (AUC5, q28). A Simon's two-stage design was employed. Results 45 patients were enrolled: 23 (51.1%) presented platinum-resistance, and 27 (60%) had received at least 3 prior regimens for recurrence. The response rate was 28.9% with 3 complete and 10 partial responses (median duration of response = 6 months). Only one (0.4%) G4 non-febrile neutropenia was observed; G3 neutropenia, anemia, or thrombocytopenia, were observed in 2.5%, 1.7%, and 1.7% of the cycles, respectively. G3-4 vomiting was reported in only 1.7%, and 0.4% of the cycles were associated with G3 dyspepsia or diarrhea or constipation. Only one patient experienced G3 hypertension associated to G2 hypersensitivity reaction. No differences in baseline versus post-treatment Quality of Life scores were observed. Median progression free survival and overall survival were 5 and 13 months, respectively. Conclusions Celecoxib combined with carboplatin showed promising activity and it is well tolerated in heavily-treated recurrent ovarian cancer patients. Abstract Background Cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2), the key enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins, is involved in critical steps of tumor onset and progression, and is a strong predictor of chemotherapy resistance and poor outcome in advanced ovarian cancer. To our knowledge, no data has been reported until now about the association between COX-2 status and response to different chemotherapy regimens. Methods A retrospective study was performed to investigate the association of COX-2 with outcome and response to platinum versus platinum/paclitaxel in 68 primary ovarian cancer. COX-2 immunoreaction was performed on paraffin-embedded sections by using rabbit polyclonal antiserum against COX-2. Results In the overall series, COX-2 positivity was found in a statistically significant higher percentage of not responding cases than in patients responding to chemotherapy (n = 15/21; 71.4% versus n = 17/47; 36.1%; p value = 0.0072). A higher percentage of COX-2 positivity was found in patients unresponsive (n = 11/13; 84.6%) versus patients responsive to platinum-based chemotherapy (n = 9/26; 34.6%). In cases administered platinum/paclitaxel, COX-2 positivity was found in 4 out of 8 (50%) of un responsive versus 8 out of 21 (38.1%) of responsive cases. Logistic regression analysis of parameters likely to affect response to treatment resulted in a p value = 0.17 for the interaction COX-2/type of treatment. Conclusion Although these findings need to be confirmed in a larger series, our study suggests a possible indication that there is a difference in the influence of COX-2 on response depending on treatment regimen.

Category: Basic Sciences/Biologics; Basic Sciences/Biologics Introduction/Purpose: Zinc and magnesium are crucial for bone health, and their deficiencies can lead to impaired bone metabolism and repair. Although enhancing their bioavailability has been linked to better fracture healing, their levels during healing have not been studied. We hypothesized that zinc and magnesium levels transiently decrease at the fracture site compared to intact bone. This study is the first to explore temporal trace element levels during the initial stages of fracture healing. The findings will reveal when each element changes its concentration at the fracture site, which is associated with specific functions necessary for appropriate healing. Understanding the connection between trace element concentration and repair processes could lead to more effective treatment or supplementation during fracture healing. Methods: Following induction of a femur fracture in male BB Wistar rats, injured and intact contralateral femurs were harvested at 1- (n=3), 3- (n=4), and 7-days (n=3) after fracture. Fracture segments 10mm in length were resected 5mm from the center of the callus in either direction. Contralateral non-fractured femur segments were resected from the same region within the femoral diaphysis. Samples were analyzed via inductively coupled mass spectrometry using an Agilent ICP-MS 7900 (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA). Data was converted from ppb to percent weight zinc and magnesium per weight of bone (w/w%). The difference between zinc and magnesium in contralateral intact bone vs. fractured bone was calculated and averaged (∆) for each group. The average % change were also determined. An independent sample two-tailed t-test was performed comparing average w/w% of zinc and magnesium between fracture and contralateral samples. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: After 1-day post-fracture, there was a -29.09 average % change in zinc levels (∆ 6.90x10^-03 ± 5.05x10^-03) (p = 0.033) and a -25.76 average % change in magnesium levels (∆ 1.21x10^-01 ± 7.36x10^-02 w/w%) (p = 0.241) between fractured and non- fractured femurs. After 3-days post-fracture, there was a -22.51 average % change in zinc levels (∆ 5.45x10^-03 ± 3.95x10^-03 w/w%) (p = 0.022) and a -33.07 average % change in magnesium levels (∆ 1.84x10^-01 ± 1.05x10^-01 w/w%) (p = 0.025). After 7- days post-fracture, there was a -9.40 average % change in zinc levels (∆ 1.90x10^-03 ± 3.98x10^-03) (p = 0.377) and a -17.88 average % change in magnesium levels (∆ 9.04x10^-02 ± 1.24x10^-01 w/w%) (p = 0.159) between fractured and non-fractured femurs. Conclusion: Previous research has established the significance of trace elements, namely zinc and magnesium, in the process of fracture healing. Zinc has been shown to improve fracture healing, while magnesium has been found to play a role regulating inflammation during early fracture healing. The findings of this study corroborate our hypothesis that levels of these elements transiently decline following fracture. By evaluating these changes in trace element levels, we can gain a better understanding of their function in the fracture healing process. These observations may offer insight into potential therapeutic approaches utilizing zinc and magnesium for fracture healing in the future.

Abstract Introduction Induction of labour is a common procedure performed on labour and delivery. There are multiple ways to achieve cervical ripening, however, no studies have evaluated these methods based on a patient's gestational age. The goal of this study is to compare the length of labour at specific gestational ages in women being induced with either vaginal misoprostol or the dinoprostone insert. Methods A retrospective cohort study of 3774 singleton pregnancies from 2009 to 2019 at a health system with tertiary care and community hospitals was conducted. The primary outcome was time to insertion of medication to time to vaginal delivery. Secondary outcomes included length of first and second stages of labour, length of rupture of membranes, mode of delivery, neonatal Apgar scores at 1 and 5 min and neonatal intensive care unit admission. A generalized linear model was utilised for continuous outcomes and a logistic regression model was used for binary outcomes. Após a realização de uma pesquisa participante, com grupo focal e posterior análise de conteúdo como técnica analítica, buscaram-se analisar os principais desafios ocorridos no currículo com a implantação do novo projeto político-pedagógico. Para uma análise crítica sobre currículo e educação do campo, foram considerados autores, entre eles Moreira (2009), Sacristán (2017) e Arroio (2008), Caldart (2004, 2008, 2009) Munarim (2009) e Souza (2006, 2012). A partir dos dados advindos da investigação, destacamos a presença de identidades locais e atividades formativas voltadas à Educação do Campo, demonstração de como as características e especificidades do campo precisam fazer parte e permanecer no currículo, a necessidade das diferentes disciplinas trabalharem de forma interdisciplinar e que os componentes curriculares estejam contextualizados considerando o espaçotempo do desenvolvimento curricular. Abstract

The antidepressant effects of ketamine and esketamine are well-documented. Nonetheless, most of the underlying molecular mechanisms have to be uncovered yet. In the last decade, metabolomics has emerged as a useful means to investigate the metabolic phenotype associated with depression as well as changes induced by antidepressant treatments. This mini-review aims at summarizing the main findings from preclinical and clinical studies that used metabolomics to investigate the metabolic effects of subanesthetic, antidepressant doses of ketamine and esketamine and their relationship with clinical response. Both animal and human studies report alterations in several metabolic pathways - including the tricarboxylic acid cycle, glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, the kynurenine pathway, and the urea cycle - following the administration of ketamine or its enantiomers. Although more research is needed to clarify commonalities and differences in molecular mechanisms of action between the racemic compound and its enantiomers, these findings comprehensively support an influence of ketamine and esketamine on mitochondrial and cellular energy production, membrane homeostasis, neurotransmission, and signaling. Metabolomics may thus represent a promising strategy to clarify molecular mechanisms underlying treatment-resistant depression and related markers of clinical response to ketamine and esketamine. This body of preclinical and clinical evidence, if further substantiated, has the potential to guide clinicians towards personalized approaches, contributing to new paradigms in the clinical management of depression.

The solar limb darkening function is well known and is widely employed in models of the solar atmosphere. However, there has been a lack of systematic spectrally resolved measurements. Therefore we recently decided to start an observing campaign with the Gregory Coud\'e Telescope at IRSOL in Locarno in order to produce a spectral atlas obtained at 10 different heliocentric angles $\theta$, chosen so that $\mu = \cos\theta$ covers the interval from 0.1 to 1.0 in step of 0.1. The measurements carried out till now include the spectral range from 439 nm to 666 nm. The collected data provide information about the anisotropy of the emergent radiation field on the solar surface, allowing a better modeling of the Second Solar Spectrum. Abstract

Ablative materials are widely employed to protect space vehicles from the extreme thermal conditions experienced during their flight into a planetary atmosphere. Carbon-phenolic ablators are composed of a phenolic matrix and a fibrous carbon reinforcement. In the present study, the fibrous reinforcement has been modified through the deposition of thin protective layers of zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide, with the objective of reducing fiber recession and oxidation. The depositions were carried out via atomic layer deposition (ALD), a method that allows for the controlled deposition of uniform and conformal coatings on the carbon felt fibers. The depositions were subsequently evaluated through SEM-EDS analysis. Pristine and ALD-modified felts were impregnated with a phenolic resin matrix and the ablation performance of the composite materials was evaluated through oxyacetylene flame tests. The results demonstrated that, in comparison to uncoated ablators, the ALD-modified samples exhibited enhanced performance in terms of mass loss and surface recession: compared to uncoated ablators, the former was 14% lower and the latter was diminished by 50%. Moreover, the morphological characterization of the tested specimens revealed a significantly reduced degree of oxidation of the coated fibers which were directly exposed to the flame. Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to optimize the prediction of pressure fluctuations over the external surfaces of aerospace launchers and minimize the number of wind tunnel tests. In the present research, various machine learning (ML) techniques capable of predicting the acoustic load were tested and validated. The methods included decision trees, Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs), linear regression, and ensemble methods such as bagged and boosted trees. These algorithms were trained using experimental data from an extensive wind tunnel test campaign conducted to support the design of a VEGA (Advanced Generation European Vehicle) launcher vehicle and provide wall pressure fluctuations in many configurations. The main objective of this study was to identify, among several algorithms, the most suitable method able to process such complex databases efficiently and to provide reliable predictions. Different statistical indices, including the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean square error (MSE), and a correlation coefficient (R-squared), were employed to evaluate the performance of the ML methods. Among all the methods, the bagged tree algorithm outperformed the others, providing the most accurate predictions, with low RMSE and high R-squared values across all test cases. Other methods, such as the ANNs and GPR, exhibited higher errors, indicating their reduced suitability for this dataset. The results demonstrate that ensemble decision tree methods are highly effective in predicting acoustic loads, offering reliable predictions, even for configurations outside the training database. Abstract

Blood serves as the primary global biological matrix for health surveillance, disease diagnosis, and response to drug treatment, holding significant promise for personalized medicine. The diverse array of lipids and metabolites in the blood provides a snapshot of both physiological and pathological processes, with many routinely monitored during conventional wellness checks. The conventional method involves intravenous blood collection, extracting a few milliliters via venipuncture, a technique limited to clinical settings due to its dependence on trained personnel. Microsampling methods have evolved to be less invasive (collecting ≤150 µL of capillary blood), user-friendly (enabling self-collection), and suitable for remote collection in longitudinal studies. Dried blood spot (DBS), a pioneering microsampling technique, dominates clinical and research domains. Recent advancements in device technology address critical limitations of classical DBS, specifically variations in hematocrit and volume. This review presents a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art microsampling devices, emphasizing their applications and potential for monitoring metabolites and lipids in blood. The scope extends to diverse areas, encompassing population studies, nutritional investigations, drug discovery, sports medicine, and multi-omics research.

Abstract

The study of bioactive molecules of marine origin has created an important bridge between biological knowledge and its applications in biotechnology and biomedicine. Current studies in different research fields, such as biomedicine, aim to discover marine molecules characterized by biological activities that can be used to produce potential drugs for human use. In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to a particular group of marine invertebrates, the Ascidians, as they are a source of bioactive products. We describe omics data and computational methods relevant to identifying the mechanisms and processes of innate immunity underlying the biosynthesis of bioactive molecules, focusing on innovative computational approaches based on Artificial Intelligence. Since there is increasing attention on finding new solutions for a sustainable supply of bioactive compounds, we propose that a possible improvement in the biodiscovery pipeline might also come from the study and utilization of marine invertebrates’ innate immunity.

Abstract

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) by evoked potentials is a widespread auditory pathway assessment technique. This is largely applied due to its cost-effectiveness, practicality and ease of use. In contrast, it requires a trained professional to carry out the analysis of the results. This motivates several research efforts to increase the independence of the diagnostician. To this end, the present work shows the ability of three signal classification tools to differentiate ABR studies of normal hearing subjects from those who may have some pathology. As a starting point, the PhysioNet short term auditory evoked potentials databases are used to calculate the features later applied to construct the dataset. The features used are diverse classes of permutation entropy, fractal dimension, the Lyapunov exponent and the zero crossing rate. To ensure more accurate results, a Montecarlo simulation of one thousand trials is employed to train the classifiers and test the results. The goodness of the classification is performed upon the basis of the computation of quality parameters, such as the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), the F1 score coefficient and the accuracy. In all the cases the methodology proposed gives high performance results that encourage the line of research of the present work.

Abstract

Excess copper may disturb plant photosynthesis and induce leaf senescence. The underlying toxicity mechanism is not well understood. Here, 3-week-old cucumber plants were foliar exposed to different copper concentrations (10, 100, and 500 mg/L) for a final dose of 0.21, 2.1, and 10 mg/plant, using CuSO4 as the Cu ion source for 7 days, three times per day. Metabolomics quantified 149 primary and 79 secondary metabolites. A number of intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle were significantly down-regulated 1.4-2.4 fold, indicating a perturbed carbohydrate metabolism. Ascorbate and aldarate metabolism and shikimate-phenylpropanoid biosynthesis (antioxidant and defense related pathways) were perturbed by excess copper. These metabolic responses occur even at the lowest copper dose considered although no phenotype changes were observed at this dose. High copper dose resulted in a 2-fold increase in phytol, a degradation product of chlorophyll. Polyphenol metabolomics revealed that some flavonoids were down-regulated, while the nonflavonoid 4-hydroxycinnamic acid and trans-2-hydroxycinnamic acid were significantly up-regulated 4- and 26-fold compared to the control. This study enhances current understanding of copper toxicity to plants and demonstrates that metabolomics profiling provides a more comprehensive view of plant responses to stressors, which can be applied to other plant species and contaminants.

49. Real-time collision detection method for deformable bodies

Abstract

This paper presents a real-time solution for collision detection between objects based on the physics properties. Traditional approaches on collision detection often rely on the geometric relationships that computing the intersections between polygons. Such technique is very computationally expensive when applied for deformable objects. As an alternative, we approximate the 3D mesh in an spherical surface implicitly. This allows us to perform a coarse-level collision detection at extremely fast speed. Then a dynamic programming based procedure is applied to identify the collision in fine details. Our method demonstrates better prevention to collision tunnelling and works more efficiently than the state-of-the-arts., Comment: Computer-Aided Design, 2015

Abstract

San Nicola Island, pertaining to the Tremiti Archipelago (Southern Adriatic Sea, Italy), is widely affected by cliff retreat and gravitational phenomena which severely threaten its monumental historical and natural value. In this study, geomorphological features of the area were derived following a stepwise approach, combining multitemporal stereoscopic aerial photo interpretations with morphometric analyses and detailed field surveys. A rockfall susceptibility map was created following a heuristic approach based on morphometric and geothematic parameters, accounting for slope, slope aspect, outcropping lithologies, structural discontinuities density, distance from landslide scarps, and presence of anthropic caves. Cliff sectors set on dolomitic limestones feature the highest susceptibility values, especially along the southeastern sector; medium values, instead, are found along the island flanks and along scarps located within the inner sectors; and the lowest values are detected on summit tabular surfaces. The achieved results were compared with historical maps and seismic data derived from local and national archives and catalogues, respectively. These analyses allowed us to define the role played by litho-structural and tectonic features on landslide occurrence and distribution, and their interplay in driving landscape evolution over centuries. Finally, this work represents a valuable scientific tool to support geomorphological studies for landslide hazard assessment and proper territorial planning in any other small insular areas, showing similar geological–geomorphological features and landscape values.
