December1931. Le Corbusier, together with Pierre Jeanneret and his assistants, concludes the project for the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow; one of the grands travaux he never managed to build. Hence, perhaps, the publications became for the master a valid vehicle for its reconstruction; as if the role of magazines and books had the possibility of "building" some of the most significant ideas of this architectural project. From then on, there were two magazines in which the palais occupied a few -but important- pages as soon as it was completed: issues 1-2 of Cahiers d'Art in 1932 and issue 10 of L'Architecture d'aujourd'hui in 1933. Using a database of about 375,000 individual observations, which represent over two million days worked, this article studies building workers' remunerations and how labour markets functioned in eighteenth‐century Madrid. We present new wage series that correct and improve the evidence existing in the literature and provide an explanation for the long‐run wage stickiness found in the city. Economic factors, rather than customs or guild regulations, explain why wage rates remained unaltered for about 100 years. The reconstruction of the working lives of 100 of the workers who took part in the construction of the Royal Palace of Madrid provides the first evidence of wage profiles for pre‐industrial times. They demonstrate that every wage rate was attached to a certain level of skill. Craftsmen's wages increased as they gained abilities, as human capital theory predicts, while returns to age or experience were negligible in the case of unskilled workers. Balai Besar Kedah is a royal audience hall built within the complex of Kota Setar Palace. The grand hall has witnessed coronations of The Sultans of Kedah as well as a number of highly ranked social events throughout its existence since the year 1735. The architecture of this majestic structure is portraying the traditional Malay style, featuring some influences from Siam and the western world. The arrangements of spaces and ornamentations of Balai Besar signifying the high status of the Sultan, primarily as a host of the social events. The Sultan being well travelled, were said to be inspired by buildings in his journey and decided to build his own mixed style building as part of the royal complex. This study aims to reassess the architectural style of Balai Besar, focusing to explore the traditional Malay architecture of Kedah Tua. The methodology of the research is site visits, observation and interview. The architectural elements of Balai Besar were analysed and compared with the local traditional architecture to trace the underlying local and borrowed styles. The styles found is based on two major influence which is British colonial and Siamese. The Malay architectural element would fuse with these foreign styles and create a totally new form of Malay architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Ducal Palace of Pastrana houses one of the most remarkable sets of Renaissance coffered ceilings in Spain, designed by Alonso de Covarrubias and executed by carpenters Cristóbal de Nieva and Justo de Vega in 1549-50. Decorative repertoires inspired by ancient Roman style had reached wooden ceilings, including polygonal tessellations that could be seen in Classical remains. Whereas all over Europe those designs were used as flat ceilings, the expertise and geometric mastery of Spanish carpenters, heirs of the Visigothic and Hispano--Islamic tradition, allowed its implementation on polyhedral ceilings, originating rich compositions beyond the mere copying of forms imported from Italy. This article analyzes the geometric patterns present in Pastrana and the various strategies carried out to fit the tessellations in the sloped panels, and especially the junctions among them. Between 1834 and 1860 the British government mobilised the latest scientific knowledge in the construction of the new Palace of Westminster, home to the nation's Houses of Parliament. Built in a Gothic style, this legislative building embodied the latest experimental techniques and expertise from geology, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, and optics. By exploring the narrative of this architectural project, it becomes clear just how central scientific values were to Victorian politics. At the same time, this article shows how the experience of constructing Britain's nineteenth-century parliament building has implications and lessons for parliamentary architecture today. The Bassegli-Gozze Palace in Dubrovnik is one of the most representative examples of residential architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries located in the historical core of the city. With its numerous historical layers, some believed to be dating even from the late antiquity, the palace is deeply embedded in the urban evolution of its residential block. The article presents a report from a June 17, 2016 conference in Jena, Germany of the Netzwerk Reformationsforschung in Thüringen Reformation history society on the history of Ernestiner dynasty. Topics of presentations delivered include Ernestiner support of theologian Martin Luther and the Reformation, the biography of duke Bernhard von Weimar, and the role of Ernestiners in building and remodeling the Zur Fröhlichen Wiederkunft palace in Wolfersdorf, Germany.

The Earls' Palace in Oliva, which was declared a National Monument In 1920 but today has almost disappeared, was a point of reference of the Valencian late-Gothic architecture. The aim of this paper is to detail a graphical restitution of one of its great halls, Hall 12. The work started with the graphic information dating from between 1219 and 1920 that was collected by the Danish architects Fischer and Lauritzen. These data were processed in order to define and draw each of the singular elements that went to make up the Palace, together with the whole complex, following a rigorous method allowing us to visualise and understand this unique architectural space. The result is a comprehensive graphical restitution of the Hall by means of a thorough geometric definition that allows a deeper analysis and understanding of the architectural complex, for use in further studies. Ceiling paintings in the great hall of the former Goedel-Lannoy palace in Maribor, commissioned by Hermann Baron Goedel-Lannoy and painted by Francesco Barazzutti, are a rare example of profane historical ceiling paintings in Slovenia. The paper discusses historical, formal and iconographic sources for the paintings. Based on the career of the commissioner and his recent elevation to baronial ranks, the author argues that he wanted to expose to view his new social status by imitation of the imagery developed by participants in the Ottoman wars. The reportage style of painted battles is put in connection with the ceiling paintings of Counts Khisl and Brandis in Maribor and of Count Gaisruck in Jelšingrad which are interpreted from a novel perspective. Regarding the equestrian portraits, commissioned by Marchese Gravisi in Koper and Count Ragogna Torre in Pordenone, depicting four victors of the Relief of Vienna, a new identification of one of the victors is proposed. An essay is presented which discusses history of the design and construction of the palace the Palazzo Tolomei in Siena, Italy from the mid 13th century through the early 14th century. The article offers several photographs of Siena's architecture, including of the Palazzo Vecchio, north façade of the Palazzo Pubblico and the Piazza San Cristoforo. An overview of the use of the Palazzo Tolomei for public and private purposes is provided.

The article author examines the problem of architecture history associated with the evolution of castle palaces in the current territory of Lithuania in the Lithuanian Renaissance period. The article is based on research papers thematically close to the publication, other literature and archive documents. After prehistory review of castle palaces at a theoretical level and clarifying the conditions for their occurrence, significant development trends of castle palaces during the Renaissance period in current Lithuania territory is revealed. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Italian, Flemish and Flanders Renaissance reached Lithuania and merged with the local tradition; in the light of the Lithuanian Renaissance castle palaces reached their prosperity period in Lithuania. Castle palaces were distinguished by the diversity of their structural and architectural forms, relatively meaningful connection between function and artistic expression and a sustainable link with the components of environment. The article seeks to describe the architectural design and decoration of Hetman Ivan Mazepa's palace in Baturyn, Ukraine, which was destroyed by the Russian Army in 1709. Focus is given to the influence of Western baroque architecture, particularly Italian and Lithuanian, on the structure's design and 17th-century Ukrainian architecture in general. Focus is given to the archaeological excavations of the palace that began in 2003 as well as its use of stone, Roman baroque church architecture, and a lack of ceramic rosettes.

The article focuses on the accuracy of Willem Frederik Stutterheim's reconstruction of kraton and his mystification of the site identifications in the monumental work of Javanese author Mpu Prapañca. Because Stutterheim did not reveal his surveys on the site, the authors were able to assign one pair of geographical coordinates to his plan in verification of the archaeological identification of the kraton and to situate his entire reconstruction in the context of the built landscape. Evidence from the surveys suggests the existence of an extensive grid of very wide medieval canals in the area of the vanished Majapahit capital and that Stutterheim correctly situated the crossroads near the northeastern corner of the palace.

The article examines Cardinal Giovanni Battista Pamphilj's use of architecture as a means of self-representation. He commissioned a palace that doubled the size of his ancestral home in the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. The palace offered more space to accommodate separate households for the cardinal and his brother. According to the article, the palace represented a culminating moment in the efforts of the Pamphilj to forge and articulate an identity in Rome. It adds that Pamphilj's palace embodied the aspiration of several generations of the family to gain a visible and impressive presence in the Piazza Navona.

The article examines the astrological decoration of the Sala dei Venti in the Palazzo Del Te, a palace in the suburbs of Mantua, Italy. In an article about Sala dei Venti of E. H. Gombrich, it was demonstrated that the iconography of the sixteenth medallions was based on the astrological doctrines associated with risings and settings of the extra-zodiacal constellations. This doctrine was traced by Gombrich through the passages in Bool V of the Astronomica of Marchus Manilius and Book VIII of the Matheseos Libri VIII of Julius Firmicus Maternus.

Cosimo de' Medici's great house on the Via Larga in Florence, begun in the mid-1440s, was the model of Early Renaissance palace architecture. By the time he moved into it, however, sometime before 1458, Cosimo's life had nearly run its course. Most of his years had been spent in the house of his father, the casa vecchia of the Medici, also on the Via Larga. Possibly at the same time as the construction of the new palace, this first Medici palace underwent a transformation that united the main house and flanking buildings behind one vast facade. This article seeks to ascertain the precise nature and location of the old Medici complex on the Via Larga through examination of the visual and documentary evidence of the casa vecchia and all adjoining properties. An inventory of the house made in 1418 suggests a tentative reconstruction of the interior of the old palace, while comparison with other 14th-century houses may warrant certain assumptions about its external appearance. It will be seen that a striking similarity exists between the 1418 inventory of parts of the first Medici palace and the order of the palace begun by Cosimo de' Medici in the 1440s. As was usual in Early Renaissance architecture, the components and arrangement of an earlier house became the point of departure for the program and layout of a new house. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Khirbet al-Maffar is important as a well published example of an early Islamic "desert castle." Using data that Baramki provided, the present study reworks this large corpus of Islamic ceramics deriving new stratigraphic information and a chronological framework for the Mafjar ceramic types in four periods: Period I, 750-800; Period 2, 800-850; Period 3, 900-1000; and Period 4, 1200-1400. Within the con text of the depositional history of the palace, this detailed analysis leads to revisions in our understanding of the history of the site. Thus, the earthquake of 747/8, however terrible it might have been, neither halted construction nor interrupted occupation of the palace. On the contrary, the suggested ceramic sequence bridges the "early Abbasid" hiatus and offers a heuristic model to be tested on early Islamic sites in Jordan and Palestine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the domestic architectural designs of the palace Harlaxton Manor built in 1830 for Gregory Gregory in Lincolnshire, England. Gregory was a wealthy and well traveled squire with passion for continental furniture and works of art. According to John Claudius Loudon, Gregory had decided upon the Elizabethan or Jacobean style of architecture for his new house in 1822. It is stated that a vital factor in the choice of the Jacobean style must have been its presence in the estate of the old Harlaxton Manor in the seventeenth century. Gregory first consulted Anthony Salvin as architect in 1831 and in the same year, the construction started.

The article focuses on the architectural history and analysis of the Orford Castle in Suffolk, England. The castle was built between 1165 and 1173 by Henry II to consolidate his royal power in the region, and in particular over Hugh Bigod, earl of Norfolk. It is inferred that the remarkable 21-sided tower with its three projecting square turrets, was completed within two years from its construction. An overview of Orford Castle designs and its photographs were also provided. The castle is considered as one of the best-preserved remaining castles of the country.

The article examines the characteristics of the architecture of the Scottish royal palaces in the 16th century in Scotland. They include the Holyroodhouse (James IV), the Holyroodhouse (James V), the Stirling Palace, the Linlithgow Palace and the Falkland Palace. It describes the principal buildings of the Holyrood Palace, which is founded as a monastery and served as the principal residence of the Kings and Queens of the country. It characterizes the first phase of the palace to provide new accommodation for the bachelor king, as well as details the reconstruction of the palace.

The article presents a report on a panel on forms of public self-representation in the early modern period, convened during the Historikertag, the annual congress of the Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands (VHD) and Verband der Geschichtslehrer Deutschlands (VGD) professional associations in Göttingen, Germany, from September 23-26, 2014. Topics discussed included the presentation of dynasties and princely houses in portrait paintings, the symbolic aspects of palace architecture, and the depiction of Kings Gustavus II Adolphus, Charles X Gustavus, and Charles XI of Sweden on coins and medals.

The article discusses the documentation of the Palace of Merneptah's architecture as part of the reinstallation of the Egyptian collection at the Penn Museum in Pennsylvania in 2016. Topics covered include the photographing of the architecture, and the copying of all scenes and inscriptions on the stone elements. Also noted is the resulting display's tribute to both the structure and its excavator, Dr. Clarence S. Fisher.

The article reports on the presentations at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition held in 1904. It features numerous palaces of enormous extent. One is the Palace of Education, where the most complete educational exhibit in the history of the world is found. Another is the Palace of Horticulture, which produced a show of fruits to the surprise of the visitors. Aside from the palaces, noble plazas and beautiful water-ways in between are also a sight; with their velvet lawn and blooming flowers.
