- Abstract
This paper proposes an integrated modeling framework to support airline frequency planning in a multi-airport system. First, a grid-based spatial model is developed to estimate passenger demand as a function of air-service characteristics (such as flight frequency and airfare) and ground accessibility. Second, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to provide decision support for the allocation of flights to airports belonging to the multi-airport system, subject to fleet availability, flow balance and operational requirements. We apply the proposed approach to model frequent flyer passengers departing from one of the major multi-airport systems in Europe. Our results show that the degree of diversification of a multi-airport system—i.e., the presence of alternative airports—plays a significant role on both the demand and supply sides, providing passengers with more diversified and accessible services and providing airlines with higher operational flexibility and resilience in case of disruptions. Our modeling framework can be extended to capture additional managerial objectives or practical requirements.

- Abstract
Unstable hemoglobins are caused by single amino acid substitutions in the HBB gene, often affecting key histidine residues, leading to protein destabilization and hemolytic crises. In contrast, long HBB variants, exceeding 20 bp, are rare and associated with a β-thalassemia phenotype due to disrupted α-β chain interactions. We describe a family wherein four of six members carry a novel 23-amino-acid in-frame duplication of HBB (c.176_244dup), named hemoglobin (Hb) Monza. Despite its length, this duplication manifests as an unstable hemoglobin variant rather than a β-thalassemia phenotype.

Self-connection has become an appealing alternative for passengers in the European air transportation market, along with the remarkable growth of the low-cost carriers (LCCs) network over the last decade. As the development of self-connectivity is not directly designed in airports and airlines' growth strategies, this study aims to deeply understand the evolution of self-connectivity options in the intra-European market over time. By implementing a quickest travel time approach, we analyse the number of quickest connections and the share of indirect quickest paths that remained un-managed in years 2006 and 2016. Results document that, overall, travelling in Europe has become faster (−5.7 min of weighted average), while European airports' coverage, that is, airport pairs that can be directly or indirectly connected, decreased from 65% to 53%. The strong increase in LCCs' seat capacity (74%) did not translate into a similar growth of indirect connections options. Due to LCCs' offer redistribution and traditional carriers' partial retreatment from the European market to concentrate on intercontinental destinations, 1-transfer managed or un-managed options available to passengers in Europe dropped by 9.5%, and the share of 1-transfer quickest paths achievable by self-connecting flights increased by only 3pp, from 66% in 2006 to 69% in 2016. PRECAST concrete construction ,PRESERVATION of architecture ,ENERGY consumption ,INSULATING materials ,STRUCTURAL frames - Abstract
In this work a multi-story residential building located in Cinisello Balsamo, near Milan, was considered as case study for the application of two new prefabricated building systems for the energy retrofit. The first one, developed within EASEE, a European project funded by 7 th Framework Program, consists in a preassembled insulated panel for the retrofit of facades, based on two TRC thin precast layers rigidly connected to an EPS core. The panels can be easily applied on the external side of existing facades without the use of scaffoldings, providing an additional efficient insulation as well a new external cladding. The second one consists in a preassembled timber panel for existing pitched roofs. The process includes the substitution of the existing roof with modular integrated panels with a high content of recycled materials that can be easily fixed on the existing structures (timber frames, concrete, masonry, etc.). The combination of the two prefabricated construction systems, applied on the case study, allowed the reduction of the building energy demand by 82%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is the first attempt to systematically investigate the phenomenon of base abandonments by low-cost carriers (LCCs) in the world, from 1997 to 2014. Our results identify 109 cases where the LCCs decreased their presence in airports by at least 50 per cent in terms of offered seats. In 28 cases, the LCCs completely abandoned the airports. The incidence of downsizing is significantly reduced for important base airports. The abandonment by LCCs can be reversed, even though this is not very likely; in only 7.3 per cent of cases the same LCCs recovered full capacity. The impact on airports of LCC abandonments depends on the carrier level of dominance. The presence of middle size alternative airports increases the likelihood of downsizings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMERCIAL aeronautics ,PRICE discrimination ,SINGLE consumers ,MULTIVARIATE analysis - Abstract
This paper extends the literature on low-cost carriers' pricing strategies by investigating the presence of quantity price discrimination implemented through a two-part tariff in offered fares. By analysing Internet fares for all easyJet flights departing from the Amsterdam Schiphol airport between March and April 2015, we search for price differentials based on the number of seats booked by a single consumer. We find that the lowest average unit price is associated with a single consumer reserving 5 seats. On average, the per-seat discount for a single consumer reserving 5 seats is €9.48, which is 14% of the single-seat fare. Additionally, a multivariate analysis shows that quantity discounts are greater for flights with a larger fraction of available seats at the time of booking, the seats are booked longer in advance, and the destination's gross domestic product per capita is greater. Conversely, quantity discounts are lower for longer routes, larger destination airports, and routes for which easyJet's market share is higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We investigate how the intensity of competition among airports affects their technical efficiency by computing airports’ markets on the basis of a potential demand approach. We find that the intensity of competition has a negative impact on airports’ efficiency in Italy from 2005 to 2008. This implies that airports belonging to a local air transportation system where competition is strong exploit their inputs less intensively than do airports with local monopoly power. Further, we find that public airports are more efficient than private and mixed ones. Hence, policy makers should provide incentives to implement airports’ specialization in local systems where competition is strong and monitor the inputs’ utilization rate even when private investors are involved. Abstract: The paper analyzes cases of de-hubbing in air transport between 1997 and 2009. It initially addresses the conditions to be met for airports to be identified as de-hubbing cases. Second, it examines what happens after de-hubbing by clustering the cases into homogenous groups that show that, on average, airports that experienced de-hubbing did not recover their original traffic within five years and that de-hubbing is likely to be irreversible. When hub carriers were replaced at least partially by low-cost carriers, airports on average recovered faster. De-hubbing adversely affects the number of destinations served less severely than the seats offered by carriers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We analyse the pricing policy adopted by Ryanair, the main low-cost carrier in Europe. Based on a year''s fare data for all of Ryanair''s European flights, using a family of hyperbolic price functions, the optimal pricing curve for each route is estimated. The analysis shows a positive correlation between the average fare for each route and its length, the frequency of flights operating on that route, and the percentage of fully booked flights. As the share of seats offered by the carrier at the departure and destination airports increases, fares tend to decrease. The correlation of dynamic pricing to route length and the frequency of flights is negative. Conversely, as competition increases discounts on advance fares rise. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper investigates the connectivity of the European air transportation network. A time-dependent minimum path approach is employed to calculate the minimum travel time between each pair of airports in the network, inclusive of flight times and waiting times. The connectivity offered by each alliance''s network is compared with that of the overall network. The results show that roughly two-thirds of the fastest indirect connections are not operated by the alliance system; this could be exploited to enable a new passenger strategy of “self-help hubbing”. - Abstract
This article presents analysis of air service levels and competition dynamics in the transatlantic market before and after the EU-US Open Skies Agreement (OSA) signed in 2008. By comparing direct and connecting flights in a typical off-peak week, we investigate whether the EU-US OSA has led to more choices for transatlantic travelers. We examine the impact of the EU-US OSA on competition between carriers, alliances, and hub airports. The results show that the number of direct transatlantic connections and served airport pairs decreased and only indirect competition increased.

The pricing of low-cost carriers (LCCs) compared with traditional airlines has been extensively investigated since their inception in the air transport market. Abundant empirical evidence attests that, on average , LCCs' fares (per km) are lower than those usually offered by full-service carriers (FSCs). Such literature, however, paid virtually no attention to the conditions under which LCCs lose their convenience compared to traditional airlines. The purpose of this study is to investigate the occurrence of LCCs sometimes offering higher fares than FSCs on competing flights. By using a dataset expressly collected for this purpose, we are able to quantify its frequency and suggest some possible explanations. These findings concur to cast some questions on the widely held preconception of vertical differentiation between LCCs' and FSCs' offered services. Further research will be needed in order to understand the relative weight of the suggested factors. • The article analyses the cases in which LCCs offer higher fares than FSCs on competing flights. • The phenomenon is more likely when approaching the date of the flight. • "Price reversal" is related to passengers' search habits and airlines' reputations. • The phenomenon is more frequent on routes connecting multi-airport cities. • We identify the typical price interactions between LCCs and FSCs leading to the phenomenon. Background. Hypercoagulability, a common finding in cancer patients, is associated with an increased risk of both thrombosis and tumor development. The HYPERCAN study (ClinicalTrials.gov, ID# NCT02622815) is an ongoing Italian prospective, multicenter, observational study, evaluating the predictive value of thrombotic markers for early cancer diagnosis in healthy subjects and for cancer prognosis and venous thromboembolism in patients with newly diagnosed malignant disease. In this analysis of a large cohort of patients with breast cancer, we evaluated whether pre-chemotherapy thrombotic biomarker levels: 1. are associated with breast cancer-specific clinicopathological features; and 2. may predict for disease recurrence (DR).

- Abstract
In cancer patients, hypercoagulability is a common finding. It has been associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, but also to tumor proliferation and progression. In this prospective study of a large cohort of breast cancer patients, we aimed to evaluate whether pre-chemotherapy abnormalities in hemostatic biomarkers levels: (i) are associated with breast cancer-specific clinico-pathological features; and (ii) can predict for disease recurrence. D-dimer, fibrinogen, prothrombin fragment 1+2, and FVIIa/antithrombin levels were measured in 701 early-stage resected breast cancer patients candidate to adjuvant chemotherapy and prospectively enrolled in the HYPERCAN study. Significant prognostic parameters for disease recurrence were identified by Cox regression multivariate analysis and used for generating a risk assessment model. Pre-chemotherapy D-dimer, fibrinogen, and pro-thrombin fragment 1+2 levels were significantly associated with tumor size and lymph node metastasis. After 3.4 years of follow up, 71 patients experienced a recurrence. Cox multivariate analysis identified prothrombin fragment 1+2, tumor size, and Luminal B HER2-negative or triple negative molecular subtypes as independent risk factors for disease recurrence. Based on these variables, we generated a risk assessment model that significantly differentiated patients at low- and high-risk of recurrence (cumulative incidence: 6.2 vs 20.7%; Hazard Ratio=3.5; P <0.001). Our prospective clinical and laboratory data from the HYPERCAN study were crucial for generating a scoring model for assessing risk of disease recurrence in resected breast cancer patients, candidate to systemic chemotherapy. This finding stimulates future investigations addressing the role of plasma prothrombin fragment 1+2 in the management of breast cancer patients to provide the rationale for new therapeutic strategies. (The HYPERCAN study is registered at clinicaltrials.gov identifier 02622815 )., (Copyright© 2020 Ferrata Storti Foundation.)
