The almost identical charge-to-mass ratios of fully ionized helium-4 and carbon-12 ions enable simultaneous acceleration in hadron therapy synchrotrons. At the same energy per mass, helium ions exhibit a stopping range approximately three times greater than carbon ions. They can therefore be exploited for online range verification downstream of the patient during carbon ion beam irradiation. One possibility for creating this mixed beam is accelerating the two ion species sequentially through the LINAC and subsequently "mixing" them at injection energy in the synchrotron with a double injection scheme. This work reports the first successful generation, acceleration, and extraction of a mixed helium and carbon ion beam using this double multi-turn injection scheme, which was achieved at the MedAustron therapy accelerator in Austria. A description of the double multi-turn injection scheme, particle tracking simulations, and details on the implementation at the MedAustron accelerator facility are presented and discussed. Finally, measurements of the mixed beam at delivery in the irradiation room using a radiochromic film and a low-gain avalanche diode (LGAD) detector are presented., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

This study reports a new meta-stable structure in epitaxial nickel-aluminum (Ni-Al) films (Al content up to 24.4 at.%) grown on MgO(001) substrates by magnetron sputtering. Structure probes by XRD, HRTEM and nano-indentation combined with atomistic simulations consistently demonstrate that in thin film samples with coexisting {\gamma} and {\gamma}' phases, domains of the two phases are homogeneously intermixed at the atomic-scale, forming a coherent matched lattice with one overall lattice parameter. It expands as aluminum (Al) concentration increases, with {\gamma} phase domains being progressively replaced by {\gamma}' phase domains. This behavior is similar to a solid solution, where the atomic-scale domain of the {\gamma} and {\gamma}' phases act as solute and solvent, respectively. Isothermal annealing and nanoindentation reveal that the structure decomposes into distinct {\gamma}' and {\gamma} phases due to the loss of lattice matching at 400 {\deg}C, resulting in an increase in hardness. This is followed by further relaxation and domain growth at higher temperatures (600 {\deg}C and 800 {\deg}C), accompanied by a decrease in hardness. These observations confirm the metastable nature of the nanoscale {\gamma} and {\gamma}' phases system, enhance the understanding of the Ni-Al alloy system and providing new insights for meta-stable intermetallic thin film synthesis.

We analyse the implications of the presence of spatial curvature in modified gravity models. As it is well known, the current standard cosmological model, the $\Lambda$CDM, is assumed to be spatially flat based on the results of many experiments. However, this statement does not necessarily hold for a modified gravity (MG) model, and this leads to couplings of the spatial curvature with the parameters of the chosen cosmological model. In this paper, we illustrate the theoretical development of how spatial curvature affects the equations of motion at linear order for scalar and tensor perturbations modes using a model-independent approach based on the formalism of the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of dark energy (DE). Working in momentum space and at linear order in the gravitational coupling, we derive the most general class of energy-momentum tensors associated with a given multipolar structure of the spacetime in arbitrary dimensions, and built out of a mass and an angular momentum, at any order in the spin expansion. In this formalism, we are able to derive directly the full multipolar structure of any solution from the multipole expansion of the energy-momentum tensor, in complete analogy to Newtonian gravity. In particular, we identify the recurrence relations that allow obtaining the multipolar structure of the Kerr and the Myers-Perry black hole solutions, defining source multipoles in a General Relativity context for the first time. For these solutions, we are able to resum the energy-momentum tensor in momentum space at all orders in the angular momentum, and compute its real-space version. In the Kerr case we exactly obtain the matter source found by Israel, namely an equatorial, pressureless thin disk rotating at superluminal speed. For Myers-Perry in five dimensions, the matter distribution is a three-ellipsoid in four spatial dimensions with nontrivial stresses. Remarkably, for any dimensions, the matter configuration is a lower-dimensional distribution which has the same singularity structure as the fully non-linear black-hole solution. Our formalism underscores the advantage of working in momentum space to generate nontrivial matter sources for non-linear spacetimes, and could be used to construct regular non-exotic matter configurations that source spinning black hole solutions or horizonless compact objects with the same multipolar structure as black holes., Comment: 15+7 pages

We compute the vacuum metric generated by a generic rotating object in arbitrary dimensions up to third post-Minkowskian order by computing the classical contribution of scattering amplitudes describing the graviton emission by massive spin-1 particles up to two loops. The solution depends on the mass, angular momenta, and on up to two parameters related to generic quadrupole moments. In $D=4$ spacetime dimensions, we recover the vacuum Hartle-Thorne solution describing a generic spinning object to second order in the angular momentum, of which the Kerr metric is a particular case obtained for a specific mass quadrupole moment dictated by the uniqueness theorem. At the level of the effective action, the case of minimal couplings corresponds to the Kerr black hole, while any other mass quadrupole moment requires non-minimal couplings. In $D>4$, the absence of black-hole uniqueness theorems implies that there are multiple spinning black hole solutions with different topology. Using scattering amplitudes, we find a generic solution depending on the mass, angular momenta, the mass quadrupole moment, and a new stress quadrupole moment which does not exist in $D=4$. As special cases, we recover the Myers-Perry and the single-angular-momentum black ring solutions, to third and first post-Minkowksian order, respectively. Interestingly, at variance with the four dimensional case, none of these solutions corresponds to the minimal coupling in the effective action. We introduce a text-to-speech (TTS) model called BASE TTS, which stands for $\textbf{B}$ig $\textbf{A}$daptive $\textbf{S}$treamable TTS with $\textbf{E}$mergent abilities. BASE TTS is the largest TTS model to-date, trained on 100K hours of public domain speech data, achieving a new state-of-the-art in speech naturalness. It deploys a 1-billion-parameter autoregressive Transformer that converts raw texts into discrete codes ("speechcodes") followed by a convolution-based decoder which converts these speechcodes into waveforms in an incremental, streamable manner. Further, our speechcodes are built using a novel speech tokenization technique that features speaker ID disentanglement and compression with byte-pair encoding. Echoing the widely-reported "emergent abilities" of large language models when trained on increasing volume of data, we show that BASE TTS variants built with 10K+ hours and 500M+ parameters begin to demonstrate natural prosody on textually complex sentences. We design and share a specialized dataset to measure these emergent abilities for text-to-speech. We showcase state-of-the-art naturalness of BASE TTS by evaluating against baselines that include publicly available large-scale text-to-speech systems: YourTTS, Bark and TortoiseTTS. In this contribution we describe a recent study focused on the lattice calculation of inclusive decay rates of heavy mesons. We show how the inclusive calculation can be achieved starting from four-point lattice correlation functions normalised appropriately. The correlators used in this project come from gauge ensembles provided by the JLQCD and ETM collaborations. An essential point of this method is the extraction of spectral densities from lattice correlators which is obtained using two of the most recent approaches in the literature. Our results are in remarkable agreement with analytical predictions from the operator-product expansion. Background and Objective: In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in particular Deep Neural Networks (DNN) became a relevant research topic in biomedical image segmentation due to the availability of more and more data sets along with the establishment of well known competitions. Despite the popularity of DNN based segmentation on the research side, these techniques are almost unused in the daily clinical practice even if they could support effectively the physician during the diagnostic process. Apart from the issues related to the explainability of the predictions of a neural model, such systems are not integrated in the diagnostic workflow, and a standardization of their use is needed to achieve this goal. Methods: This paper presents IODeep a new DICOM Information Object Definition (IOD) aimed at storing both the weights and the architecture of a DNN already trained on a particular image dataset that is labeled as regards the acquisition modality, the anatomical region, and the disease under investigation. Results: The IOD architecture is presented along with a DNN selection algorithm from the PACS server based on the labels outlined above, and a simple PACS viewer purposely designed for demonstrating the effectiveness of the DICOM integration, while no modifications are required on the PACS server side. Also a service based architecture in support of the entire workflow has been implemented. Conclusion: IODeep ensures full integration of a trained AI model in a DICOM infrastructure, and it is also enables a scenario where a trained model can be either fine-tuned with hospital data or trained in a federated learning scheme shared by different hospitals. In this way AI models can be tailored to the real data produced by a Radiology ward thus improving the physician decision making process. CrN-based alloy thin films are of interest as thermoelectric materials for energy harvesting. Ab initio calculations show that dilute alloying of CrN with 3 at.% W substituting Cr, induce flat electronic bands and push the Fermi level EF into the conduction band, while retaining dispersive Cr 3d bands. These features are conducive for both high electrical conductivity \sigma and high Seebeck coefficient \alpha, and hence the thermoelectric power factor {\alpha}^2\sigma. To investigate this possibility, epitaxial CrWxNz films were grown on c-plane sapphire by dc-magnetron sputtering. However, even films with the lowest W concentration (x = 0.03) in our study contained metallic h-Cr2N, which is not conducive for a high \alpha. Nevertheless, the films exhibit a sizeable power factor of {\alpha}^2\sigma ~ 4.7 x 10-4 Wm-1K-2 due to high \sigma ~ 700 Scm-1, and a moderate \alpha ~ -25 ~{^^^^00b5}V/K. Increasing h-Cr2N fractions in the 0.03 < x \le 0.19 range monotonically increases \sigma, but severely diminishes \alpha leading to two orders of magnitude decrease in {\alpha}^2\sigma. This trend continues with x > 0.19 due to W precipitation. These findings indicate that dilute W additions below its solubility limit in CrN is important for realizing high thermoelectric power factor in CrWxNz alloy films.

We compute the first moments of the $q^2$ distribution in inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays as functions of the lower cut on $q^2$, confirming a number of results given in the literature and adding the $O(\alpha_s^2\beta_0)$ BLM contributions. We then include the $q^2$-moments recently measured by Belle and Belle II in a global fit to the moments. The new data are compatible with the other measurements and slightly decrease the uncertainty on the nonperturbative parameters and on $|V_{cb}|$. We analyse in detail the QED corrections to the total decay width and the moments of the electron energy spectrum of the inclusive semi-leptonic $B \to X_c e \nu$ decay. Our calculation includes short-distance electroweak corrections, the complete ${\cal O}(\alpha)$ partonic terms and leading-logarithmic QED effects up to ${\cal O}(\Lambda^3_{\rm QCD}/m_b^3)$. A comprehensive numerical comparison of our results against those obtained with the Monte Carlo (MC) tool PHOTOS is presented. While the comparison indicates good overall agreement, our computation contains QED effects not included in PHOTOS and should therefore better describe photon radiation to $B \to X_c e \nu$ as measured by the $B$-factories. By exploiting the Kerr-Schild gauge, we study the scattering of a massive (charged) scalar off a Kerr-Newman black hole. In this gauge, the interactions between the probe and the target involve only tri-linear vertices. We manage to write down the tree-level scattering amplitudes in analytic form, from which we can construct an expression for the eikonal phase which is exact in the spin of the black hole at arbitrary order in the Post-Minkowskian expansion. We compute the classical contribution to the cross-section and deflection angle at leading order for a Kerr black hole for arbitrary orientation of the spin. Finally, we test our method by reproducing the classical amplitude for a Schwarzschild black hole at second Post-Minkowskian order and outline how to extend the analysis to the Kerr-Newman case., Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures. v2: typos corrected and refs added. This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. The Accreting Millisecond X-ray Pulsar IGR J17591-2342 is a LMXB system that went in outburst on August 2018 and it was monitored by the NICER observatory and partially by other facilities. We aim to study how the spectral emission of this source evolved during the outburst, by exploiting the whole X-ray data repository of simultaneous observations. The continuum emission of the combined broad-band spectra is on average well described by an absorbed Comptonisation component scattering black-body-distributed photons peaking at (0.8+/-0.5) keV, by a moderately optically thick corona (tau=2.3+/-0.5) with temperature of (34+/-9) keV. A black-body component with temperature and radial size of (0.8+/-0.2) keV and (3.3+/-1.5) km respectively is required by some of the spectra and suggests that part of the central emission, possibly a fraction of the neutron star surface, is not efficiently scattered by the corona. The continuum at low energies is characterised by significant residuals suggesting the presence of an absorption edge of O VIII and of emission lines of Ne IX ions. Moreover, broad Fe I and Fe XXV K-alpha emission lines are detected at different times of the outburst, suggesting the presence of reflection in the system., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

We present the lattice QCD calculation of inclusive semileptonic $B_s$-meson decays. We follow a recently proposed method, which is based on the extraction of smeared spectral densities from Euclidean correlation functions and on the numerical reconstruction of the integration kernel relevant for the inclusive decay rate calculation. We compute four-point Euclidean correlation functions using JLQCD and ETM gauge ensembles with unphysically light $b$-quark masses, and apply two different methods for the integration kernel reconstruction. Finally, we show that the lattice results obtained in this work are in good agreement with the analytic predictions of the operator-product-expansion. The calculation of free energies from first principles in materials is a formidable task which enables the prediction of phase stability with high accuracy; these calculations are complicated in magnetic materials by the interplay of electronic, magnetic, and vibrational degrees of freedom. In this work, we show the feasibility and accuracy of the calculation of phase stability in magnetic systems with ab initio methods and thermodynamic integration by sampling the magnetic and vibrational phase space with coupled atomistic spin dynamics-ab initio molecular dynamics (ASD-AIMD) simulations [Stockem et al., PRL 121, 125902 (2018)], where energies and interatomic forces are calculated with density functional theory (DFT). We employ the method to calculate the phase stability of Fe at ambient pressure from 800 K up to 1800 K. The Gibbs free energy difference between fcc and bcc Fe at zero pressure as a function of temperature is calculated carrying out thermodynamic integration over temperature on the energies at the DFT level from ASD-AIMD, using a reference free energy difference calculated in the paramagnetic state at temperatures much higher than the magnetic transition temperatures with thermodynamic integration over stress-strain variables with disordered local moment (DLM)-AIMD simulations. We show the importance of the magnetic ordering temperature of bcc Fe on the $\alpha$ to $\gamma$ structural transition temperature, whereas the $\gamma$ to $\delta$ transition is well reproduced independently of the exchange interactions. The Gibbs free energy difference between the two structures is within 5 meV/atom from the CALPHAD estimate, and both transition temperatures are reproduced within 150 K. The present work paves the way to free energy calculations in magnetic materials from first principles with accuracy in the order of 1 meV/atom.

It is known that the canonical quantization of general relativity leads to a non-renormalizable theory, which however with the modern tools of effective field theories it is possible to make well-defined at low energies. What is emerging nowadays is that recovering general relativity from the classical limit of scattering amplitudes seems more efficient than actually solve the Einstein equations. The thesis then aims to explore the state-of-the-art strategies to recover classical gravitational observables from quantum computations and apply them in order to reconstruct the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-Tangherlini solution, which is the generalization to arbitrary dimensions of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om one, from the classical limit of scattering amplitudes of charged scalars. In the first part of the thesis, we recover the most generic energy-ordered effective action which is compatible with the symmetries of the theory, and then we discuss the classical limit from which it is possible to obtain back classical gravitational observables out of quantum computations. The state-of-the-art techniques to extract the classical contributions out of graviton emission amplitudes are reviewed, and they are applied to the context of a theory which is also coupled to the electromagnetic field. Since divergences arise in four and five dimensions it is crucial to define non-minimal couplings with the purpose of canceling such singularities and obtaining finite results. In the end, the considerations employed in the metric case are used to recover the electromagnetic potential associated to the black hole solution through the classical limit of photon emission processes. Also in this case there appear divergences that have to be renormalized. We present a non-perturbative computation of inclusive rates of semileptonic decays of heavy mesons from lattice QCD simulations. The calculation is based on the extraction of smeared spectral functions obtained from four-point Euclidean correlation functions computed on configuration ensembles of the JLQCD and ETM collaborations. We compare our results for the inclusive decay rates with analytical predictions from the operator-product expansion, finding a good agreement for the calculation of the inclusive decay rate. Countless processes in nature and industry, from rain droplet nucleation to plankton interaction in the ocean, are intimately related to turbulent fluctuations of local concentrations of advected matter. These fluctuations can be described by considering the change of the separation between particle pairs, known as pair dispersion, which is believed to obey a cubic in time growth according to Richardson's theory. Our work reveals a universal, scale-invariant alignment between the relative velocity and position vectors of dispersing particles at a mean angle that we show to be a universal constant of turbulence. We connect the value of this mean angle to Richardson's traditional theory and find agreement with data from a numerical simulation and a laboratory experiment. While the Richardson's cubic regime has been observed for small initial particle separations only, the constancy of the mean angle manifests throughout the entire inertial range of turbulence. Thus, our work reveals the universal nature of turbulent pair dispersion through a geometrical paradigm whose validity goes beyond the classical theory, and provides a novel framework for understanding and modeling transport and mixing processes., Comment: 20 pages, three figures

The metric and the electromagnetic potential generated by a static, spherically symmetric charged massive object in any dimension are given by the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-Tangherlini solution. We derive the expansion of this solution up to third post-Minkowskian order by computing the classical contribution of scattering amplitudes describing the emission of either a graviton or a photon from a massive charged scalar field up to two loops. In four and five dimensions these amplitudes develop ultraviolet divergences that are cancelled by higher-derivative counterterms in a way that generalises what was recently shown to happen in the chargeless case. We extend the arithmetic product of species of structures and symmetric sequences studied by Maia and Mendez and by Dwyer and Hess to coloured symmetric sequences and show that it determines a normal oplax monoidal structure on the bicategory of coloured symmetric sequences. In order to do this, we establish general results on extending monoidal structures to Kleisli bicategories. We present estimates of the semileptonic widths of the $B_s$ and $\Lambda_b$ hadrons. We employ the latest fit to the $B$ inclusive semileptonic data, the heavy quark expansion and lattice QCD results. Describing the (a) electronic and magnetic properties (EMP) of antiferromagnetic or paramagnetic phases of compounds generally requires the knowledge of (b) the spin configurations and lattice structure (SCLS) of such phases at a given temperature. Indeed, studying the coupling between (a) and (b) has been an outstanding challenge in the theory of magnetism. The traditional approach to electronic phases of matter has generally focused on solving the problem of EMP regarding the SCLS as a spectator degree of freedom (DOF). Yet, it has been recognized that EMP of a compound generally respond self-consistently to changes in SCLS and vice versa. We construct here a practical, density functional theory (DFT)-based approach that provides the SCLS as a function of temperature, involving the description of spin, lattice, and spin-lattice dynamics of different magnetic phases. We distinguish three Levels of dynamics: (I) dynamics of the spin DOF treated via noncollinear Heisenberg Monte-Carlo with exchange energies from DFT, (II) dynamics of the lattice DOF treated by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) employing a fixed spin configuration from Level I at the simulated temperature, and (III) coupling of spin and lattice dynamics via Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert spin dynamics combined with AIMD. Such SCLS at each of the three levels are used as inputs to DFT supercell calculations, providing the EMP at each temperature. The results of this sequence include electronic band structures, band gaps, density of states, as well as the statistical distribution of local moments and the short-range order parameters, each as a function of temperature. Using NiO as a test case, we address the separability of the DOF in magnetic insulators for a minimal description of electronic and magnetic properties, demonstrating that inclusion of spin dynamics and, to some level, lattice dynamics is enough to explain the EMP.

We report the results of a combined experimental and theoretical study on nonstoichiometric CrN1+d thin films grown by reactive magnetron sputtering on c-plane sapphire, MgO (100) and LaAlO3 (100) substrates in a Ar/N2 gas mixture using different percentage of N2. There is a transition from n-type to p-type behavior in the layers as a function of nitrogen concentration varying from 48 at. % to 52 at. % in CrN films. The compositional change follows a similar trend for all substrates, with a N/Cr ratio increasing from approximately 0.7 to 1.06-1.10 by increasing percentage of N2 in the gas flow ratio. As a result of the change in stoichiometry, the lattice parameter and the Seebeck coefficient increase together with the increase of N in CrN1+d; in particular, the Seebeck value coefficient transitions from -50 uV.K-1 for CrN0.97 to +75 uV.K-1 for CrN1.1. Density functional theory calculations show that Cr vacancies can account for the change in Seebeck coefficient, since they push the Fermi level down in the valence band, whereas N interstitial defects in the form of N2 dumbbells are needed to explain the increasing lattice parameter. Calculations including both types of defects, which have a strong tendency to bind together, reveal a slight increase in the lattice parameter and a simultaneous formation of holes in the valence band. To explain the experimental trends, we argue that both Cr vacancies and N2 dumbbells, possibly in combined configurations, are present in the films. A recently proposed approach to compute the inclusive semi-leptonic decay rate on the lattice allows for the calculation of various quantities (differential distributions and moments) in different subchannels. The X-ray source 4U 1822-371 is an eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary and X-ray pulsar, hosting a NS that shows periodic pulsations in the X-ray band. The inclination angle of the system is so high that in principle, it should be hard to observe both the direct thermal emission of the central object and the reflection component of the spectrum because they are hidden by the outer edge of the accretion disc. Assuming that the source accretes at the Eddington limit, we analysed non-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations and studied the average broadband spectrum, with the aim to investigate the presence of a reflection component. No such component has been observed before in a high-inclination source such as 4U 1822-371. We modelled the spectral emission of the source using two different reflection models, Diskline plus Pexriv and the self-consistent model RfxConv. In our analysis, we find significant evidence of a reflection component in the spectrum, in addition to two lines associated with neutral or mildly ionised iron. The continuum spectrum is well fitted by a saturated Comptonisation model and a thermal black-body component emitted by the accretion disc at a lower temperature. We updated the ephemeris, adding two new eclipse times to the most recent ephemeris reported in literature. In our proposed scenario, the source is accreting at the Eddington limit with an intrinsic luminosity of $10^{38}$ erg/s, while the observed luminosity is two orders of magnitude lower. Despite the high inclination, we find that a reflection component is required to fit residuals at the Fe line range and the hard excess observed in the spectrum. The best-fit value of the inner disc radius is still uncertain and model dependent. More observations are therefore needed to confirm these results, which can give important information on this enigmatic and peculiar source.

Low-mass X-ray binaries hosting a low-magnetised neutron star, which accretes matter via Roche-lobe overflow, are generally grouped in two classes, named Atoll and Z sources after the path described in their X-ray colour-colour diagrams. Scorpius X-1 is the brightest persistent low-mass X-ray binary known so far, and it is the prototype of the Z sources. We analysed the first NuSTAR observation of this source to study its spectral emission exploiting the high statistics data collected by this satellite. Examining the colour-colour diagram, the source was probably observed during the lower normal and flaring branches of its Z-track. We separated the data from the two branches in order to investigate the evolution of the source along the track. We fitted the 3-60 keV NuSTAR spectra using the same models for both the branches. We adopted two description for the continuum: in the first case we used a blackbody and a thermal Comptonisation with seed photons originating in the accretion disc; in the second one, we adopted a disc-blackbody and a Comptonisation with a blackbody-shaped spectrum of the incoming seed photons. A power-law fitting the high energy emission above 20 keV was also required in both cases. The two models provide the same physical scenario for the source in both the branches: a blackbody temperature between 0.8 and 1.5 keV, a disc-blackbody with temperature between 0.4 and 0.6 keV, and an optically thick Comptonising corona with optical depth between 6 and 10 and temperature about 3 keV. Furthermore, two lines related to the K$\alpha$ and K$\beta$ transitions of the He-like Fe XXV ions were detected at 6.6 keV and 7.8 keV, respectively. We discuss the impact of the recent $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ calculations of the semileptonic width of the $b$ quark and of the relation between pole and kinetic heavy quark masses by Fael et al. on the inclusive determination of $|V_{cb}|$. In this paper we discuss the possibility to generate and accelerate proton nanobeams in fully dielectric laser-driven accelerators (p-DLAs). High gradient on-chip optical-power dielectric laser accelerators (DLAs) could represent one of the most promising way towards future miniaturized particle accelerator. A primary challenge for DLAs are small beam apertures having a size of the order of the driving laser wavelength where low charge high-repetition (or also CW) ultralow emittance nanobeams have to be transported. For electrons beams generation and acceleration, intense research activities are ongoing, and several demonstrations have been already obtained by using electrons nanotip (or flat photocathode) sources feeding dielectric microstructures. In this article we aim at the possibility to integrate a nanosource for the generation of a light ion or proton nano-beams suitable for the subsequent acceleration into sub-relativistic (low-beta) p-DLA stages. Such integration includes the idea to use a proton dielectric radiofrequency quadrupole (p-DRFQ) for bridging the gap between the accelerator front-end and the drift-tube and high-beta sections. The paper has been prepared as a white book including state-of-art technologies and new solutions that now put the ambitious frontier of a fully nanostructured proton accelerator into reach. Conceptual studies of p-DLAs here presented could enable table-top proton nano-beams for several applications: proton beam writing, nuclear reaction analysis at sub-micrometer scales, the construction of miniaturized Proton-Boron Nuclear Fusion based Reactors, biological analysis at the micrometer scale, ion beam analysis at the sub-cellular level, mini-beams ion therapy to spare the shallow tissues, proton irradiation of transistors, compact proton linac for neutron generation.

Convolution models are powerful tools in many fields of spectral and image analysis owing to their wide applicability, and X-ray astrophysical spectral analysis is no exception. We found that relativistically broadened Fe K${\alpha}$ line profiles obtained through many convolution models both within and without Xspec show deviations from the profiles produced by their non-convolution counterparts. These discrepancies depend on the energy grid considered and on the shape of both the kernel and the underlying spectrum, but can reach as high as 10% of the flux in certain energy bins. We believe that this effect should be taken into consideration, considering how often these models are used to study spectral features of lower relative intensity, and advise great discretion in using them., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (8 subfigures)

For a category $\mathcal E$ with finite limits and well-behaved countable coproducts, we construct a model structure, called the effective model structure, on the category of simplicial objects in $\mathcal E$, generalising the Kan--Quillen model structure on simplicial sets. We then prove that the effective model structure is left and right proper and satisfies descent in the sense of Rezk. As a consequence, we obtain that the associated $\infty$-category has finite limits, colimits satisfying descent, and is locally Cartesian closed when $\mathcal E$ is, but is not a higher topos in general. GrailQuest (Gamma-ray Astronomy International Laboratory for Quantum Exploration of Space-Time) is an ambitious astrophysical mission concept that uses a fleet of small satellites whose main objective is to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that depend on the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 1E-23 for photons in the gamma-ray band (100 keV). Therefore, to detect this effect, light must propagate over enormous distances and the experiment must have extraordinary sensitivity. Gamma-Ray Bursts, occurring at cosmological distances, could be used to detect this tiny signature of space-time granularity. This can be obtained by coherently combine a huge number of small instruments distributed in space to act as a single detector of unprecedented effective area. This is the first example of high-energy distributed astronomy: a new concept of modular observatory of huge overall collecting area consisting in a fleet of small satellites in low orbits, with sub-microsecond time resolution and wide energy band (keV-MeV). The enormous number of collected photons will allow to effectively search these energy dependent delays. Moreover, GrailQuest will allow to perform temporal triangulation of impulsive events with arc-second positional accuracies: an extraordinary sensitive X-ray/Gamma all-sky monitor crucial for hunting the elusive electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Waves, that will play a paramount role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy.
