Search

Determining properties of an arbitrary binary sequence is a challenging task if only local processing is allowed. Among these properties, the determination of the parity of 1s by distributed consensus has been a recurring endeavour in the context of automata networks. In its most standard formulation, a one-dimensional cellular automaton rule should process any odd-sized cyclic configuration and lead the lattice to converge to the homogeneous fixed point of 0s if the parity of 1s is even and to the homogeneous fixed point of 1s, otherwise. The only known solution to this problem with a single rule was given by Betel, de Oliveira and Flocchini (coined BFO rule after the authors' initials). However, three years later the authors of the BFO rule realised that the rule would fail for some specific configuration and proposed a computationally sound fix, but a proof could not be worked out. Here we provide another fix to the BFO rule along with a full proof, therefore reassuring that a single-rule solution to the problem really does exist.

Accurate segmentation of the vocal tract from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data is essential for various voice and speech applications. Manual segmentation is time intensive and susceptible to errors. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of deep learning algorithms for automatic vocal tract segmentation from 3D MRI.

A common task arising in various domains is that of ranking items based on the outcomes of pairwise comparisons, from ranking players and teams in sports to ranking products or brands in marketing studies and recommendation systems. Statistical inference-based methods such as the Bradley-Terry model, which extract rankings based on an underlying generative model of the comparison outcomes, have emerged as flexible and powerful tools to tackle the task of ranking in empirical data. In situations with limited and/or noisy comparisons, it is often challenging to confidently distinguish the performance of different items based on the evidence available in the data. However, existing inference-based ranking methods overwhelmingly choose to assign each item to a unique rank or score, suggesting a meaningful distinction when there is none. Here, we address this problem by developing a principled Bayesian methodology for learning partial rankings -- rankings with ties -- that distinguishes among the ranks of different items only when there is sufficient evidence available in the data. Our framework is adaptable to any statistical ranking method in which the outcomes of pairwise observations depend on the ranks or scores of the items being compared. We develop a fast agglomerative algorithm to perform Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) inference of partial rankings under our framework and examine the performance of our method on a variety of real and synthetic network datasets, finding that it frequently gives a more parsimonious summary of the data than traditional ranking, particularly when observations are sparse., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

We present a sequential cellular automaton of radius 2 1 as a solution to the density classification task that makes use of an intermediate alphabet, and converges to a clean fixed point with no remaining auxiliary or intermediate information. We extend this solution to arbitrary finite alphabets and to configurations in higher dimensions.

Waste heat production represents an inevitable consequence of energy conversion as per the laws of thermodynamics. Based on this fact, by using simple theoretical models, we analyze constraints on the habitability of Earth-like terrestrial planets hosting putative technological species and technospheres characterized by persistent exponential growth of energy consumption and waste heat generation. In particular, we quantify the deleterious effects of rising surface temperature on biospheric processes and the eventual loss of liquid water. Irrespective of whether these sources of energy are ultimately stellar or planetary (e.g., nuclear, fossil fuels) in nature, we demonstrate that the loss of habitable conditions on such terrestrial planets may be expected to occur on timescales of $\lesssim 1000$ years, as measured from the start of the exponential phase, provided that the annual growth rate of energy consumption is of order $1\%$. We conclude with a discussion of the types of evolutionary trajectories that might be feasible for industrialized technological species, and we sketch the ensuing implications for technosignature searches., Comment: 76 pages, 4 figure. The striking recent putative detection of "dark oxygen" (dark O$_2$) sources on the abyssal ocean floor in the Pacific at $\sim 4$ km depth raises the intriguing scenario that complex (i.e., animal-like) life could exist in underwater environments sans oxygenic photosynthesis. In this work, we thus explore the possible (astro)biological implications of this discovery. From the available data, we roughly estimate the concentration of dissolved O$_2$ and the corresponding O$_2$ partial pressure, as well as the flux of O$_2$ production, associated with dark oxygen sources. Based on these values, we infer that organisms limited by internal diffusion may reach maximal sizes of $\sim 0.1-1$ mm in habitats with dark O$_2$, while those with circulatory systems might achieve sizes of $\sim 0.1-10$ cm. Optimistically, the estimated dark oxygen flux can potentially support biomass densities up to $\sim 3-30$ g m$^{-2}$, perhaps surpassing typical reported densities at similar depths in global deep-sea surveys. Finally, we outline how oceanic settings with dark O$_2$ may facilitate the origin(s) of life via the emergence of electrotrophy. Our findings indicate that complex life fueled by dark oxygen is plausibly capable of inhabiting submarine environments devoid of photosynthesis on Earth, conceivably extending likewise to extraterrestrial locations such as icy worlds with subsurface oceans (e.g., Enceladus and Europa), which are likely common throughout the Universe., Comment: 32 pages; 0 figures

This article presents the potentiality of inflatable, functionally-graded auxetic membranes to produce wrinkles and necks. We obtain elastic instabilities at desired locations in axisymmetric membranes and with prescribed patterns in square membranes. First, we use an analytical approach to obtain a series of universal results providing insights into the formation of wrinkles and necks in inflated, axisymmetric membranes. For example, we prove analytically that necks and wrinkles may never overlap in pressurized, axially symmetric membranes. Second, we implement the relaxed strain energy of tension field theory into a Finite Element solver (COMSOL). By tuning spatial inhomogeneities of the material moduli, we corroborate our universal results, describe the onset of wrinkling in an averaged way, and also generate non-trivial instabilities at desired locations. This study on membranes with morphing or corrugation on demand has potential applications in Braille reading and haptics.

A common method for delineating urban and suburban boundaries is to identify clusters of spatial units that are highly interconnected in a network of commuting flows, each cluster signaling a cohesive economic submarket. It is critical that the clustering methods employed for this task are principled and free of unnecessary tunable parameters to avoid unwanted inductive biases while remaining scalable for high resolution mobility networks. Here we systematically assess the benefits and limitations of a wide array of Stochastic Block Models (SBMs)$\unicode{x2014}$a family of principled, nonparametric models for identifying clusters in networks$\unicode{x2014}$for delineating urban spatial boundaries with commuting data. We find that the data compression capability and relative performance of different SBM variants heavily depends on the spatial extent of the commuting network, its aggregation scale, and the method used for weighting network edges. We also construct a new measure to assess the degree to which community detection algorithms find spatially contiguous partitions, finding that traditional SBMs may produce substantial spatial discontiguities that make them challenging to use in general for urban boundary delineation. We propose a fast nonparametric regionalization algorithm that can alleviate this issue, achieving data compression close to that of unconstrained SBM models while ensuring spatial contiguity, benefiting from a deterministic optimization procedure, and being generalizable to a wide range of community detection objective functions., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

Bilayers (soft substrates coated with stiff films) are commonly found in nature with examples including skin tissue, vesicles, or organ membranes. They exhibit various types of instabilities when subjected to compression, depending on the contrast in material properties between the two components. We present wrinkling instabilities for 3D hyperelastic bilayer systems, including auxetics (materials with negative Poisson's ratio), under uni-axial tension. In tension, a soft bilayer can experience large lateral contraction, and we find that with an adequate contrast in the Poisson ratios, compressive stresses may develop and generate wrinkles aligned with the tensile direction. We rely on an analytic modelling of the phenomenon, and validate it with a user-defined Python script with periodic boundary conditions and constitutive relation implementation in advanced Finite Element simulations. Our findings reveal that wrinkles are observed when the Poisson ratio of the substrate is greater than that of the film. As the two Poisson ratios converge to a common value, the critical stretch of instability shoots up rapidly, and the wrinkling disappears. We also confirm these results by asymptotic analysis. This wrinkling analysis has significant potential in controlling surface patterns of auxetic skin grafts and hydrogel organ patches under mechanical loads. Moreover, the asymptotic expressions in this work can be used under finite strain for buckling-based metrology applications.

The probability of detecting technosignatures (i.e. evidence of technological activity beyond Earth) increases with their longevity, or the time interval over which they manifest. Therefore, the assumed distribution of longevities has some bearing on the chances of success of technosignature searches, as well as on the inferred age of technosignatures following a first contact. Here, we investigate the possibility that the longevity of technosignatures conforms to the so-called Lindy's law, whereby, at any time, their remaining life expectancy is roughly proportional to their age. We show that, if Lindy's law applies, the general tenet that the first detected technosignature ought to be very long lived may be overruled. We conclude by discussing the number of emitters that had to appear, over the history of the Galaxy, in order for one of them to be detectable today from Earth., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We present a family of automata networks that solve the k-parity problem when run in parallel. These solutions are constructed by connecting cliques in a non-cyclical fashion. The size of the local neighbourhood is linear in the size of the alphabet, and the convergence time is proven to always be the diameter of the interaction graph. We show that this family of solutions can be slightly altered to obtain an equivalent family of solutions to the k-synchronisation problem, which means that these solutions converge from any initial configuration to the cycle which contains all the uniform configurations over the alphabet, in order.

Information transmission via communication between agents is ubiquitous on Earth, and is a vital facet of living systems. In this paper, we aim to quantify this rate of information transmission associated with Earth's biosphere and technosphere (i.e., a measure of global information flow) by means of a heuristic order-of-magnitude model. By adopting ostensibly conservative values for the salient parameters, we estimate that the global information transmission rate for the biosphere might be $\sim 10^{24}$ bits/s, and that it may perhaps exceed the corresponding rate for the current technosphere by $\sim 9$ orders of magnitude. However, under the equivocal assumption of sustained exponential growth, we find that information transmission in the technosphere can potentially surpass that of the biosphere $\sim 90$ years in the future, reflecting its increasing dominance., Comment: Published in Life; 14 pages; 1 figure

As oxygen is essential for respiration and metabolism for multicellular organisms on Earth, its presence may be crucial for the development of a complex biosphere on other planets. And because life itself, through photosynthesis, contributed to creating our oxygen-rich atmosphere, oxygen has long been considered as a possible biosignature. Here we consider the relationship between atmospheric oxygen and the development of technology. We argue that only planets with substantial oxygen partial pressure ($p_{\rm O_2}$) will be capable of developing advanced technospheres and hence technosignatures that we can detect. But open-air combustion (needed, for example, for metallurgy), is possible only in Earth-like atmospheres when $p_{\rm O_2}\ge 18\%$. This limit is higher than the one needed to sustain a complex biosphere and multicellular organisms. We further review other possible planetary atmospheric compositions and conclude that oxygen is the most likely candidate for the evolution of technological species. Thus, the presence of $p_{\rm O_2}\ge 18\%$ in exoplanet atmospheres may represent a contextual prior required for the planning and interpretation of technosignature searches., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures. To assess the number of life-bearing worlds in astrophysical environments, it is necessary to take the intertwined processes of abiogenesis (birth), extinction (death), and transfer of life (migration) into account. We construct a mathematical model that incorporates this trio of mechanisms and accordingly derive the probability distribution function and other statistical properties (e.g., mean) for the number of worlds with biospheres. We show that a given astrophysical setting may become eventually saturated with life if the rate of successful transfers of organisms is higher than the extinction rate of biospheres. Based on the available data, we suggest that this criterion might be fulfilled for star-forming clusters (and perhaps the Galactic bulge under optimal circumstances), thereby indicating that such regions could constitute promising abodes for hosting and detecting life., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Photosynthesis is a plausible pathway for the sustenance of a substantial biosphere on an exoplanet. In fact, it is also anticipated to create distinctive biosignatures detectable by next-generation telescopes. In this work, we explore the excitation features of photopigments that harvest electromagnetic radiation by constructing a simple quantum-mechanical model. Our analysis suggests that the primary Earth-based photopigments for photosynthesis may not function efficiently at wavelengths $> 1.1$ $\mu$m. In the context of (hypothetical) extrasolar photopigments, we calculate the potential number of conjugated $\pi$-electrons ($N_\star$) in the relevant molecules, which can participate in the absorption of photons. By hypothesizing that the absorption maxima of photopigments are close to the peak spectral photon flux of the host star, we utilize the model to estimate $N_\star$. As per our formalism, $N_\star$ is modulated by the stellar temperature, and is conceivably higher (lower) for planets orbiting stars cooler (hotter) than the sun; exoplanets around late-type M-dwarfs might require an $N_\star$ twice that of the Earth. Time-dependent equation-of-motion coupled cluster (TD-EOM-CC) is used to simulate impulsive stimulated x-ray Raman scattering (ISXRS) of ultrashort laser pulses by neon, carbon monoxide, pyrrole, and p-aminophenol. The TD-EOM-CC equations are expressed in the basis of field-free EOM-CC states, where the calculation of the core-excited states is simplified through the use of the core-valence separation (CVS) approximation. The transfer of electronic population from the ground state to the core- and valence-excited states is calculated for different numbers of included core- and valence-excited states, as well as for electric field pulses with different polarizations and carrier frequencies. The results indicate that Gaussian pulses can transfer significant electronic populations to the valence states through the Raman process. The sensitivity of this population transfer to the model parameters is analyzed. The time-dependent electronic density for p-aminophenol is also showcased, supporting the interpretation that ISXRS involves localized core excitations and can be used to rapidly generate valence wavepackets., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. Current research indicates that (sub)surface ocean worlds essentially devoid of subaerial landmasses (e.g., continents) are common in the Milky Way, and that these worlds could host habitable conditions, thence raising the possibility that life and technological intelligence (TI) may arise in such aquatic settings. It is known, however, that TI on Earth (i.e., humans) arose on land. Motivated by these considerations, we present a Bayesian framework to assess the prospects for the emergence of TIs in land- and ocean-based habitats (LBHs and OBHs). If all factors are equally conducive for TIs to arise in LBHs and OBHs, we demonstrate that the evolution of TIs in LBHs (which includes humans) might have very low odds of roughly $1$-in-$10^3$ to $1$-in-$10^4$, thus outwardly contradicting the Copernican Principle. Hence, we elucidate three avenues whereby the Copernican Principle can be preserved: (i) the emergence rate of TIs is much lower in OBHs, (ii) the habitability interval for TIs is much shorter in OBHs, and (iii) only a small fraction of worlds with OBHs comprise appropriate conditions for effectuating TIs. The probability that life spontaneously emerges in a suitable environment (abiogenesis) is one of the major unknowns in astrobiology. Assessing its value is impeded by the lack of an accepted theory for the origin of life, and is further complicated by the existence of selection biases. Appealing uncritically to some version of the ``Principle of Mediocrity'' -- namely, the supposed typicality of what transpired on Earth -- is problematic on empirical or logical grounds. In this paper, we adopt a Bayesian statistical approach to put on rigorous footing the inference of lower bounds for the probability of abiogenesis, based on current and future evidence. We demonstrate that the single datum that life has appeared at least once on Earth merely sets weak constraints on the minimal probability of abiogenesis. In fact, the {\it a priori} probability assigned to this event (viz., optimistic, pessimistic or agnostic prior) exerts the strongest influence on the final result. We also show that the existence of a large number of habitable worlds does not necessarily imply, by itself, a high probability that life should be common in the universe. Instead, as delineated before, the choice of prior, which is subject to uncertainty (i.e., admits multiple scenarios), strongly influences the likelihood of life being common. If habitable worlds are uncommon, for an agnostic prior, a deterministic scenario for the origin of life might be favoured over one where abiogenesis is a fluke event., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. We discuss the decomposition of the tensorial relaxation function for isotropic and transversely isotropic Modified Quasi-Linear Viscoelastic models. We show how to formulate the constitutive equation by using a convenient decomposition of the relaxation tensor into scalar components and tensorial bases. We show that the bases must be symmetrically additive, i.e they must sum up to the symmetric fourth-order identity tensor. This is a fundamental property both for isotropic and anisotropic bases that ensures the constitutive equation is consistent with the elastic limit. We provide two robust methods to obtain such bases. Furthermore, we show that, in the transversely isotropic case, the bases are naturally deformation-dependent for deformation modes that induce rotation or stretching of the fibres. Therefore, the Modified Quasi-Linear Viscoelastic framework allows to capture the non-linear phenomenon of strain-dependent relaxation, which has always been a criticised limitation of the original Quasi-Linear Viscoelastic theory. We illustrate this intrinsic non-linear feature, unique to the Modified Quasi-Linear Viscoelastic model, with two examples (uni-axial extension and perpendicular shear).

It is well-known that active galactic nuclei (AGN) are accompanied by winds and outflows, some of which may reach weakly relativistic speeds of about $10$ percent the speed of light. Yet, in spite of their ubiquity, the impact of AGN outflows in modulating surface habitability of terrestrial planets on galactic scales, using the Milky Way as the basis for comparison, is poorly investigated and inadequately understood. In this work, we address this issue by focusing on two key mechanisms: AGN winds can heat atmospheres and drive atmospheric escape, as well as stimulate the formation of nitrogen oxides and thence cause ozone depletion. By developing simple models, we estimate the maximal distance up to which these deleterious effects are rendered significant for Earth-like planets in the Milky Way, and thereby demonstrate that this value may extend to $\lesssim 1$ kpc. A time-dependent equation of motion coupled cluster singles and doubles (TD-EOM-CCSD) method is implemented, which uses a reduced basis calculated with the asymmetric band Lanczos algorithm. The approach is used to study weak-field processes in small molecules induced by ultrashort valence pump and core probe pulses. We assess the reliability of the procedure by comparing TD-EOM-CCSD absorption spectra to spectra obtained from the time-dependent coupled-cluster singles and doubles (TDCCSD) method and observe that spectral features can be reproduced for several molecules, at much lower computational times. We discuss how multiphoton absorption and symmetry can be handled in the method and general features of the core-valence separation (CVS) projection technique. Soft tissues are complex media, they display a wide range of mechanical properties such as anisotropy and non-linear stress-strain behaviour. They undergo large deformations and they exhibit a time-dependent mechanical behaviour, i.e. they are viscoelastic. In this chapter we review the foundations of the linear viscoelastic theory and the theory of Quasi-Linear Viscoelasticity (QLV) in view of developing new methods to estimate the viscoelastic properties of soft tissues through model fitting. To this aim, we consider the simple torsion of a viscoelastic Mooney-Rivlin material in two different testing scenarios: step-strain and ramp tests. These tests are commonly performed to characterise the time-dependent properties of soft tissues and allow to investigate their stress relaxation behaviour. Moreover, commercial torsional rheometers measure both the torque and the normal force, giving access to two sets of data. We show that for a step test, the linear and the QLV models predict the same relaxation curves for the torque. However, when the strain history is in the form of a ramp function, the non-linear terms appearing in the QLV model affect the relaxation curve of the torque depending on the final strain level and on the rising time of the ramp. Furthermore, our results show that the relaxation curve of the normal force predicted by the QLV theory depends on the level of strain both for a step and a ramp tests. To quantify the effect of the non-linear terms, we evaluate the maximum and the equilibrium values of the relaxation curves. A test-bench has been set up at the INFN Sezione di Bologna to optimise key elements of the KM3NeT data acquisition system. A complete framework has been built to simulate a full detection unit and test the optical network, time synchronisation, and on-shore computing resources. A fundamental tool in the test-setup is a customized electronic board: "the OctoPAES". Based on an Altera MAX10 CPLD, it is designed to emulate in a realistic way the optical and acoustic signals recorded by the underwater detectors. They allow to test in extreme conditions the acquisition system and validate its performance with realistic data. If properly configured, the optical data provided by the OctoPAES can be combined to emulate the signals of a through-going muon or other calibration events. In this contribution the OctoPAES boards and some of their use cases at the test-bench are presented.

While advances in quantum hardware occur in modest steps, simulators running on classical computers provide a valuable test bed for the construction of quantum algorithms. Given a unitary matrix that performs certain operation, obtaining the equivalent quantum circuit, even if as an approximation of the input unitary, is a non-trivial task and can be modeled as a search problem. This work presents an evolutionary search algorithm based on the island model concept, for the decomposition of unitary matrices in their equivalent circuit. Three problems are explored: the coin for the quantum walker, the Toffoli gate and the Fredkin gate. The algorithm proposed proved to be efficient in decomposition of quantum circuits, and as a generic approach, it is limited only by the available computational power., Comment: 10 pages, 18 figures

The proposition that life can spread from one planetary system to another (interstellar panspermia) has a long history, but this hypothesis is difficult to test through observations. We develop a mathematical model that takes parameters such as the microbial survival lifetime, the stellar velocity dispersion, and the dispersion of ejecta into account in order to assess the prospects for detecting interstellar panspermia. We show that the correlations between pairs of life-bearing planetary systems (embodied in the pair-distribution function from statistics) may serve as an effective diagnostic of interstellar panspermia, provided that the velocity dispersion of ejecta is greater than the stellar dispersion. We provide heuristic estimates of the model parameters for various astrophysical environments, and conclude that open clusters and globular clusters appear to represent the best targets for assessing the viability of interstellar panspermia., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. It is well-known that the chances of success of SETI depend on the longevity of technological civilizations or, more broadly, on the duration of the signs of their existence, or technosignatures. Here, we re-examine this general tenet in more detail, and we show that its broader implications were not given the proper significance. In particular, an often overlooked aspect is that the duration of a technosignature is in principle almost entirely separable from the age of the civilization that produces it. We propose a classification scheme of technosignatures based on their duration and, using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that, given an initial generic distribution of Galactic technosignatures, only the ones with the longest duration are likely to be detected. This tells us, among other things, that looking for a large number of short-lived technosignatures is a weaker observational strategy than focusing the search on a few long-lived ones. It also suggests to abandon any anthropocentric bias in approaching the question of extraterrestrial intelligence. The \oarpaf telescope is an $80\rm cm$-diameter optical telescope installed in the Antola Mount Regional Reserve, in Northern Italy. This work presents the results of the characterization of the site, as well as developments and interventions that have been implemented, with the goal of exploiting the facility for scientific and educational purposes. During the characterization of the site, an average background brightness of $22.40 \, m_{AB}$ ($B$ filter) -- $21.14 \, m_{AB}$ ($I$) per arcsecond squared, and a $1.5$--$3.0"$ seeing, have been measured. An estimate of the magnitude zero points for photometry is also reported. The material under commissioning includes 3 CCD detectors for which we provide the linearity range, gain, and dark current; a 31 orders \'echelle Northern Italy. This work presents the results of the characterization of the site, as well as developments andspectrograph with $R\sim 8500$--$15000$, and a dispersion of $n = 1.39\times 10^{-6}\rm px^{-1}\lambda + 1.45\times 10^{-4}\rm nm/px$, where $\lambda$ is expressed in $\rm nm$. The scientific and outreach potential of the facility is proven in different science cases, such as exoplanetary transits and active galactic nuclei variability. Non-canonical phenomena - defined here as observables which are either insufficiently characterized by existing theory, or otherwise represent inconsistencies with prior observations - are of burgeoning interest in the field of astrophysics, particularly due to their relevance as potential signs of past and/or extant life in the universe (e.g. off-nominal spectroscopic data from exoplanets). However, an inherent challenge in investigating such phenomena is that, by definition, they do not conform to existing predictions, thereby making it difficult to constrain search parameters and develop an associated falsifiable hypothesis. In this Expert Recommendation, the authors evaluate the suitability of two different approaches - conventional parameterized investigation (wherein experimental design is tailored to optimally test a focused, explicitly parameterized hypothesis of interest) and the alternative approach of anomaly searches (wherein broad-spectrum observational data is collected with the aim of searching for potential anomalies across a wide array of metrics) - in terms of their efficacy in achieving scientific objectives in this context. Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) are characterized by the emission of a short burst of high-energy radiation. We analyze the cumulative impact of TDEs on galactic habitability using the Milky Way as a proxy. We show that X-rays and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation emitted during TDEs can cause hydrodynamic escape and instigate biological damage. By taking the appropriate variables into consideration, such as the efficiency of atmospheric escape and distance from the Galactic center, we demonstrate that the impact of TDEs on galactic habitability is comparable to that of Active Galactic Nuclei. In particular, we show that planets within distances of $\sim 0.1$-$1$ kpc could lose Earth-like atmospheres over the age of the Earth, and that some of them might be subject to biological damage once every $\gtrsim 10^4$ yrs. One of the major goals for astronomy in the next decades is the remote search for biosignatures (i.e.\ the spectroscopic evidence of biological activity) in exoplanets. Here, we adopt a Bayesian statistical framework to discuss the implications of such future searches, both in the case when life is detected, and when no definite evidence is found. We show that even a single detection of biosignatures in the vicinity of our stellar system, in a survey of similar size to what will be obtainable in the next two decades, would affect significantly our prior belief on the frequency of life in the universe, even starting from a neutral or pessimistic stance. In particular, after such discovery, an initially agnostic observer would be led to conclude that there are more than $10^5$ inhabited planets in the galaxy with a probability exceeding $95$\%. However, this conclusion would be somewhat weakened by the viability of transfer of biological material over interstellar distances, as in panspermia scenarios. Conversely, the lack of significant evidence of biosignatures would have little effect, leaving the assessment of the abundance of life in the galaxy still largely undetermined., Comment: Published on PNAS

We present a new investigation of the habitability of the Milky Way bulge, that expands previous studies on the Galactic Habitable Zone. We discuss existing knowledge on the abundance of planets in the bulge, metallicity and the possible frequency of rocky planets, orbital stability and encounters, and the possibility of planets around the central supermassive black hole. We focus on two aspects that can present substantial differences with respect to the environment in the disk: (i) the ionizing radiation environment, due to the presence of the central black hole and to the highest rate of supernovae explosions and (ii) the efficiency of putative lithopanspermia mechanism for the diffusion of life between stellar systems. We use analytical models of the star density in the bulge to provide estimates of the rate of catastrophic events and of the diffusion timescales for life over interstellar distances., Comment: Published in Life

We study the emerging large-scale structures in networks subject to selective pressures that simultaneously drive towards higher modularity and robustness against random failures. We construct maximum-entropy null models that isolate the effects of the joint optimization on the network structure from any kind of evolutionary dynamics. Our analysis reveals a rich phase diagram of optimized structures, composed of many combinations of modular, core-periphery and bipartite patterns. Furthermore, we observe parameter regions where the simultaneous optimization can be either synergistic or antagonistic, with the improvement of one criterion directly aiding or hindering the other, respectively. Our results show how interactions between different selective pressures can be pivotal in determining the emerging network structure, and that these interactions can be captured by simple network models., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We present a spin-adapted time-dependent coupled cluster singles and doubles model for the molecular response to a sequence of ultrashort laser pulses. The implementation is used to calculate the electronic response to a valence-exciting pump pulse, and a subsequent core-exciting probe pulse. We assess the accuracy of the integration procedures used in solving the dynamic coupled cluster equations, in order to find a compromise between computational cost and accuracy. The transient absorption spectrum of lithium fluoride is calculated for various delays of the probe pulse with respect to the pump pulse. We observe that the transient probe absorption oscillates with the pump-probe delay, an effect that is attributed to the interference of states in the pump-induced superposition., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Effects of Single Event Upsets (SEU) and Single Event Transients (SET) are studied in the FE-I4B chip of the innermost layer of the ATLAS pixel system. SEU/SET affect the FE-I4B Global Registers as well as the settings for the individual pixels, causing, among other things, occupancy losses, drops in the low voltage currents, noisy pixels, and silent pixels. Quantitative data analysis and simulations indicate that SET dominate over SEU on the load line of the memory. The eT program is an open source electronic structure package with emphasis on coupled cluster and multilevel methods. It includes efficient spin adapted implementations of ground and excited singlet states, as well as equation of motion oscillator strengths, for CCS, CC2, CCSD, and CC3. Furthermore, eT provides unique capabilities such as multilevel Hartree-Fock and multilevel CC2, real-time propagation for CCS and CCSD, and efficient CC3 oscillator strengths. With a coupled cluster code based on an efficient Cholesky decomposition algorithm for the electronic repulsion integrals, eT has similar advantages as codes using density fitting, but with strict error control. Here we present the main features of the program and demonstrate its performance through example calculations. How special (or not) is the epoch we are living in? What is the appropriate reference class for embedding the observations made at the present time? How probable -- or else -- is anything we observe in the fulness of time? Contemporary cosmology and astrobiology bring those seemingly old-fashioned philosophical issues back into focus. There are several examples of contemporary research which use the assumption of typicality in time (or temporal Copernicanism) explicitly or implicitly, while not truly elaborating upon the meaning of this assumption. The present paper brings attention to the underlying and often uncritically accepted assumptions in these cases. It also aims to defend a more radical position that typicality in time is not -- and cannot ever be -- well-defined, in contrast to the typicality in space, and the typicality in various specific parameter spaces. This, of course, does not mean that we are atypical in time; instead, the notion of typicality in time is necessarily somewhat vague and restricted. The search for technosignatures from the Galaxy or the nearby universe raises two main questions: What are the possible characteristics of technosignatures? and How can future searches be optimized to enhance the probability of detection? Addressing these questions requires an interdisciplinary approach, combining i) the study of Anthropocene as a planetary transition and thus a possible proxy also for other planets, ii) the active search for technosignatures in the radio/optical and infrared range, and iii) the statistical modelling of technosignatures and Bayesian inference methods to learn from both detection and non-detection. The detailed evolution of exoplanetary atmospheres has been the subject of decade-long studies. Only recently, investigations began on the possible atmospheric mass loss caused by the activity of galactic central engines. This question has so far been explored without using available exoplanet data. The goal of this paper is to improve our knowledge of the erosion of exoplanetary atmospheres through radiation from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) undergoing an active galactic nucleus (AGN) phase. To this end, we extended the well-known energy-limited mass-loss model to include the case of radiation from AGNs. We set the fraction of incident power $\epsilon$ available to heat the atmosphere as either constant ($\epsilon = 0.1$) or flux dependent ($\epsilon = \epsilon(F_{\textrm{XUV}})$). We calculated the possible atmospheric mass loss for 54 known exoplanets (of which 16 are hot Jupiters residing in the Galactic bulge and 38 are Earth-like planets (EPs)) due to radiation from the Milky Way's (MW) central SMBH, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), and from a set of 107,220 AGNs generated using the 33,350 AGNs at $z < 0.5$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database. We found that planets in the Galactic bulge might have lost up to several Earth atmospheres in mass during the AGN phase of Sgr A*, while the EPs are at a safe distance from Sgr A* ($> 7$ kpc) and have not undergone any atmospheric erosion in their lifetimes. We also found that the MW EPs might experience a mass loss up to $\sim 15$ times the Mars atmosphere over a period of $50$ Myr as the result of exposure to the cumulative extreme-UV flux $F_{\textrm{XUV}}$ from the AGNs up to $z = 0.5$.
