Abstract

We summarise the scientific and technological aspects of the SAGAS (Search for Anomalous Gravitation using Atomic Sensors) project, submitted to ESA in June 2007 in response to the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 call for proposals. The proposed mission aims at flying highly sensitive atomic sensors (optical clock, cold atom accelerometer, optical link) on a Solar System escape trajectory in the 2020 to 2030 time-frame. SAGAS has numerous science objectives in fundamental physics and Solar System science, for example numerous tests of general relativity and the exploration of the Kuiper belt. The combination of highly sensitive atomic sensors and of the laser link well adapted for large distances will allow measurements with unprecedented accuracy and on scales never reached before. We present the proposed mission in some detail, with particular emphasis on the science goals and associated measurements., Comment: 39 pages. Submitted in abridged version to Experimental Astronomy

Abstract

We calculate and compare the response of light wave interferometers and matter wave interferometers to gravitational waves. We find that metric matter wave interferometers will not challenge kilometric light wave interferometers such as Virgo or LIGO, but could be a good candidate for the detection of very low frequency gravitational waves.

Abstract

In a famous paper where he introduces the A and B coefficients, Einstein considered that atomic decays of excited atoms can be stimulated by light waves. Here we consider that atomic decays can also be stimulated by atomic waves. It is however necessary to change the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics of thermal equilibrium into Bose-Einstein statistics and to introduce a coefficient C which complements the list of the coefficients introduced by Einstein. Stimulated emission of light can be considered as the first step towards the laser. Similarly, stimulated production of matter waves can be considered as the basic phenomenon for an atom-laser. Most of the results that we obtain here are not new. However, the method that we use remains very close to elementary classical physics and emphasizes the symmetry between electromagnetic and matter waves from various points of view., Comment: submitted in European Journal of Physics

Abstract

Atomic wave interferometers are tied to a telescope pointing towards a faraway star in a nearly free falling satellite. Such a device is sensitive to the acceleration and the rotation relatively to the local inertial frame and to the tidal gravitational effects too. We calculate the rotation of the telescope due to the aberration and the deflection of the light in the gravitational field of a central mass (the Earth and Jupiter). Within the framework of a general parametrized description of the problem, we discuss the contributions which must be taken into account in order to observe the Lense-Thirring effect. Using a geometrical model, we consider some perturbations to the idealized device and we calculate the corresponding effect on the periodic components of the signal. Some improvements in the knowledge of the gravitational field are still necessary as well as an increase of the experimental capabilities; however our conclusions support a reasonable optimism for the future. Finally we put forward the necessity of a more complete, realistic and powerful model in order to obtain a definitive conclusion on the feasibility of the experiment as far as the observation of the Lense-Thirring effect is involved., Comment: accepted to General Relativity and Gravitation

5. Increase of the Number of Detectable Gravitational Waves Signals due to Gravitational Lensing

Abstract

This article deals with the gravitational lensing (GL) of gravitational waves (GW). We compute the increase in the number of detected GW events due to GL. First, we check that geometrical optics is valid for the GW frequency range on which Earth-based detectors are sensitive, and that this is also partially true for what concerns the future space-based interferometer LISA. To infer this result, both the diffraction parameter and a cut-off frequency are computed. Then, the variation in the number of GW signals is estimated in the general case, and applied to some lens models: point mass lens and singular isothermal sphere (SIS profile). An estimation of the magnification factor has also been done for the softened isothermal sphere and for the King profile. The results appear to be strongly model-dependent, but in all cases the increase in the number of detected GW signals is negligible. Abstract

We consider a nearly free falling Earth satellite where atomic wave interferometers are tied to a telescope pointing towards a faraway star. They measure the acceleration and the rotation relatively to the local inertial frame. We calculate the rotation of the telescope due to the aberrations and the deflection of the light in the gravitational field of the Earth. We show that the deflection due to the quadrupolar momentum of the gravity is not negligible if one wants to observe the Lense-Thirring effect of the Earth. We consider some perturbation to the ideal device and we discuss the orders of magnitude of the phase shifts due to the residual tidal gravitational field in the satellite and we exhibit the terms which must be taken into account to calculate and interpret the full signal. Within the framework of a geometric model, we calculate the various periodic components of the signal which must be analyzed to detect the Lense-Tirring effect. We discuss the results which support a reasonable optimism. Abstract

The VIRGO Central Interferometer (CITF) is a short suspended interferometer operated with the central area elements of the VIRGO detector. The main motivation behind the CITF is to allow the integration and debugging of a large part of the subsystems of VIRGO while the construction of the long arms of the antenna is being completed. This will permit a faster commissioning of the full-size antenna. In fact, almost all the main components of the CITF, with the exception of the large mirrors and a few other details, are the same as those to be used for the full-size detector. In this paper the present status of the VIRGO CITF is reported.

Abstract

We report on electrical noise measurements on both Hg/sub 0.7/Cd/sub 0.3/Te test patterns and hybrid 320 /spl times/ 256 focal plane array in order to explain the low-frequency pixel flickering physical origin. Dark and under infrared illumination test patterns characterization highlights that the detector chip is not responsible for the flickering phenomenon. Taking into account the silicon readout chip influence when the full infrared complementary metal-oxyd semiconductor (IRCMOS) infrared detector is investigated, the indium bump based interconnecting system is finally pointed out as a potential excess noise source.

Abstract

International audience; Linewidth determination by self-heterodyne or self-homodyne methods may lead to mistaken interpretation, because these measurements often include significant broadening due to low-frequency FM noise. The effects of FM noise on these linewidth measurement schemes are investigated. An analytical formulation of the photocurrent autocorrelation function is given for different frequency noise signatures, the lineshape being extracted from numerical implementation. We apply these results to linewidth prediction for 850-nm commercial vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and get almost perfect agreement between the theoretical and the experimental approaches.

Abstract

The automatic control of the suspended mirrors is a major task in operating an interferometric gravitational wave antenna. To reach the extreme sensitivity required for this kind of detector, an accurate alignment and a stable locking of the interferometer on its working point are crucial. The solution of this problem is particularly complex in the case of a multistage pendulum, such as the suspension system for seismic isolation adopted in VIRGO. A precise knowledge of the suspension mechanical transfer functions (TFs) for different forces applied in the control servo-loops represents essential information to reach the goal. In this article, we describe the apparatus we developed to measure the VIRGO suspension TF and we report the results thus obtained on full-scale suspensions at the VIRGO site. Preliminary results for the implemented control system of the last suspension stage are also presented.

Abstract

International audience; In response to ESA's Call for proposals of 5 March 2007 of the COSMIC VISION 2015-2025 plan of the ESA science programme, we propose a M-class satellite mission to test of the Equivalence Principle in the quantum domain by investigating the extended free fall of matter waves instead of macroscopic bodies as in the case of GAUGE, MICROSCOPE or STEP. The satellite, called Matter Wave Explorer of Gravity, will carry an experiment to test gravity, namely the measurement of the equal rate of free fall with various isotopes of distinct atomic species with precision cold atom interferometry in the vicinity of the earth. This will allow for a first quantum test the Equivalence Principle with spin polarised particles and with pure fermionic and bosonic atomic ensembles. Due to the space conditions, the free fall of Rubidium and Potassium isotopes will be compared with a maximum accelerational sensitivity of 5*10 − 16 m/s2 corresponding to an accuracy of the test of the Equivalence Principle of 1 part in 1016. Besides the primary scientific goal, the quantum test of the Equivalence Principle, the mission can be extended to provide additional information about the gravitational field of the earth or for testing theories of fundamental processes of decoherence which are investigated by various theory groups in the context of quantum gravity phenomenology. In this proposal we present in detail the mission objectives and the technical aspects of the proposed mission.

Abstract

We report for the first time on the systematic measurement of timing jitter of 40-GHz self-pulsating Fabry-Perot laser based on InAs/InP quantum dashes emitting at 1.55 microm. Two different methods, one based on optical cross-correlation and one on electrical spectrum sideband integration are used and show a good agreement, yielding a jitter of 0.86 ps in the 1 MHz---20 MHz frequency range with a potential of 280 fs for optimized driving conditions. Amplitude noise and high-frequency timing jitter contributions are also discussed.

Abstract

International audience; We report terminal electrical noise measurements on 1.55-µm DBR tunable laser diodes in the 1 Hz–1 MHz frequency range, performed using an electrical correlation method. These measurements are compared with a comprehensive electrical model based on rate equation formalism. Taking into account diffusion phenomenon and structural parameters, we obtain a complete agreement between the model and the measurements above threshold and a quite similar tendency below threshold. The influence of Bragg section bias is also discussed.

Abstract

We report on subpicosecond pulse generation using passively mode locked lasers (MLL) based on a low optical confinement single InGaAsP/InP quantum well active layer grown in one epitaxial step. Systematic investigation of the performances of two-section MLLs emitting at 1.54 microm evidenced pulse width of 860 fs at 21.31 GHz repetition rate, peak power of approximately 500 mW and a time-bandwith product of 0.57. A 30 kHz linewidth of the photodetected radio-frequency electrical spectrum is further demonstrated at 21 GHz which is, to our knowledge, the lowest value ever reported for a quantum well device.

Abstract

We calculate the phase shift of a quantum mechanics wave function and of an electromagnetic wave produced by any gravitational disturbance using the eikonal approximation. We examine the best conditions for detection of gravitational waves. In particular, we establish that any resonant effect has a linear time dependance.

Abstract

We summarise the scientific and technological aspects of the SAGAS (Search for Anomalous Gravitation using Atomic Sensors) project, submitted to ESA in June 2007 in response to the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 call for proposals. The proposed mission aims at flying highly sensitive atomic sensors (optical clock, cold atom accelerometer, optical link) on a Solar System escape trajectory in the 2020 to 2030 timeframe. SAGAS has numerous science objectives in fundamental physics and Solar System science, for example numerous tests of general relativity and the exploration of the Kuiper belt. The combination of highly sensitive atomic sensors and of the laser link well adapted for large distances will allow measurements with unprecedented accuracy and on scales never reached before. We present the proposed mission in some detail, with particular emphasis on the science goals and associated measurements., Physics
