The first author studied the bryophyte communities on the East slope of Mt. Kenya through the forest belt between 1600 and 3000 m elevations. Seven sampling plots were selected at each 200 m altitudinal interval. At each sampling plot microclimate data measurements were carried out for six months between July and December 2020 using dataloggers and the composition of epiphyllous communities was studied in details with special reference to the host plants. Tamás Pócs and his team (Bence Együd, Judit Havasi and Mária Szegedi) joined to this research during the August of 2021, to help in further collection and identification work. The collected specimens are deposited in the herbaria of EA and EGR. Majority of the collections have already been identified. The discovery of the only mainland African occurrences of the Lemurian Microlejeunea inflata and Leptodon fuciformis are outstanding results. Other species are new for Kenya: Cololejeunea platyneura, Cyclodyction subbrevifolium, Diplasiolejeunea deslooveri, Fissidens intramarginatus and Telaranea coactilis. The last author visited the same sites 2004 with his late wife, Sarolta Czímer, guided by Min S.Chuah-Petiot from Nairobi University and from their collection Gemmabryum subapiculatum, Orthotrichum denticulatum, Lophocolea fragrans and Lophocolea muricata proved to be new to Kenya.

REMARKS The distinctive features are the presence of 1-6 basal ocelli, the approximate to distantly arranged and orbicu- lar underleaves, the entire leaf margin, the absence of utricles, and the oblong leaf lobe with rounded apices. Only known from the type in Singapore and from India (Mizutani 1981; Udar & Shaheen 1985) and in Sabah, Malaysia (Herzog 1952). REMARKS Radula grandilobula is close to the widespread Indopacific R. acuminata (Zhu & So 2001); differs in having triangularovate leaf lobes, frequently recurved free margin of leaf lobules, the leaf lobule apices pointing towards the leaf lobe apices or directed away from the stem, and the finely segmented oil bodies, 2-4 per cell (Promma & Chantanaorrapint 2015). Radula grandilobula was first described in Nakhon Si Thammarat, southern Thailand (Promma & Chantanaorrapint 2015), and its occurrence in northern Malaysia was therefore expected. New to Peninsular Malaysia (Terengganu). The species has exclusively been found on living leaves.

REMARKS Colura inuii is very similar to the widespread Indopacific C. conica (see Zhu & So 2001) but in the latter species, the sac always has a crested, toothed apiculus whereas in C. inuii, it does not occur. The perianth keels of C. conica have 1-3 celled sharp teeth at the end of the wings (Jovet-Ast 1953, fig. 51: 1-3) whereas in C. inuii, the perianth keels are often strongly mamillose but teeth are never produced. Moreover, the oil bodies are homogenous (smooth externally, rarely segmented into indistinct granules) in C. inuii while granular (faintly rough externally) in C. conica (seeYang et al. 2013: figs 2g, 3e). Furthermore, both species can be distinguished by the presence of 18-20 median valve cells and 17-19 surrounding hyaline cells in C. inuii while 13-17 and 15-16 in C. conica. Colura inuii was known from China (Taiwan), Japan and Vietnam (Horikawa 1931; Zhu & So 2001; Shu et al. 2017). New to Malaysia, which record in Peninsular Malaysia represents its southernmost locality, extending to the Malesian region. REMARKS Cololejeunea gottschei is close to C. longifolia and C. stellaris (subg. Leptocolea sect. Salebrosae) but differs from the latter two species in the apiculate, sometimes denticulate leaf lobes, and furthermore from C. longifolia in the obovate perianth and sexangular, multicellular gemmae with four adhesive cells and from C. stellaris by its smooth, not papillose cells. A widespread epiphyllous Indomalesian species, in Malaysia known only from Sabah (Mizutani 1966, under Cololejeunea paroica Mizut.). REMARKS Distinctive features of Colura ari include the strongly serrate leaf margin, the position of lobule and sac more or less parallel to the stem, truncate and apiculate sac (apex usually pointing downward), and leaf cells with large trigones and conspicuous intermediate thickenings (2 per adjacent trigones in basal leaf cells). REMARKS This species is recognized by the weakly keeled perianth without horn-like projections, the small, distant underleaves, and the obovate perianth. Previously known from the type in Sabah, Mt. Templer (Mizutani 1981) and subsequently reported from China (Zhu et al. 2005). New to Peninsular Malaysia (Terengganu). The specimens from Terengganu are similar to the Chinese material in the entire margins of underleaf lobes and the absence of weak Allorgella -typed denticulations in the margins of leaf lobes; in the type of Sabah the underleaf lobes have 1-2 marginal teeth and the margin denticulation is distinct. REMARKS Cololejeunea appressa is a member of subg. Taeniolejeunea and is distinguished from other members in this subgenus by the single row of 3-4 ocelli, the unicellular first lobule tooth and first and second lobule teeth clearly visible, not overlapping each other. A pantropical species, preferably growing on barks or on living leaves at low elevations, reported in Asia from China, Indonesia (Java, Sumatra), Indonesian New Guinea, Japan, and recently from Laos (Mizutani 1961; Piippo 1990; Pócs & Kovács 2019; Söderström et al. 2020). New to Peninsular Malaysia (Terengganu). In Malaysia the species is only known from Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah (Mizutani 1966). Cambay amber originates from the warmest period of the Eocene, which is also well known for the appearance of early angiosperm-dominated megathermal forests. The humid climate of these forests may have triggered the evolution of epiphytic lineages of bryophytes; however, early Eocene fossils of bryophytes are rare. Here, we present evidence for lejeuneoid liverworts and pleurocarpous mosses in Cambay amber. The preserved morphology of the moss fossil is inconclusive for a detailed taxonomic treatment. The liverwort fossil is, however, distinctive; its zig-zagged stems, suberect complicate-bilobed leaves, large leaf lobules, and small, deeply bifid underleaves suggest a member of Lejeuneaceae subtribe Lejeuneinae (Harpalejeunea, Lejeunea, Microlejeunea). We tested alternative classification possibilities by conducting divergence time estimates based on DNA sequence variation of Lejeuneinae using the age of the fossil for corresponding age constraints. Consideration of the fossil as a stem group member of Microlejeunea or Lejeunea resulted in an Eocene to Late Cretaceous age of the Lejeuneinae crown group. This reconstruction is in good accordance with published divergence time estimates generated without the newly presented fossil evidence. Balancing available evidence, we describe the liverwort fossil as the extinct species Microlejeunea nyiahae, representing the oldest crown group fossil of Lejeuneaceae. Plants green to yellowish green, 2−12 mm long. Shoots 0.4−0.9 (−1.1) mm wide, irregularly branched, branching of the Lejeunea - type, leaf sequence of vegetative branches lejeuneoid. Stem 40−60 µm in diameter, in transverse section with 7 cortical cells and 3 medullary ones, ventral merophyte 2 cells wide. Rhizoids at base of underleaves, few, tufted, usually hyaline, rhizoid disc absent. Leaves contiguous to imbricate, diverging from stem at an angle of 50−60°; leaf lobes asymmetrically ovate or obovate, somewhat concave, falcate, 0.3−0.6 mm long, 0.2−0.3 mm wide, margin entire, dentate to ciliate, apex ± incurved; leaf lobules ovate, strongly inflated, ca. 1/3 as long as the lobes (up to 1/2 as long as lobes in some branch leaves), lateral free margin straight, usually slightly incurved (except for apex), bordered by 4 subquadrate to rectangular marginal cells, apex usually constricted, with a unicellular, usually curved apical tooth, directed towards leaf apex, keel arched, smooth, hyaline papilla subspherical to oblong, situated at the proximal base of apical tooth. Cells of leaf lobe with thin to moderately thickened walls and small trigones, usually without intermediate thickenings. Oil bodies small, compound (fide Arnell 1965). Ocelli oblong, 3−5 (−9) per leaf lobe, forming 1 (−2) longitudinal, unbroken row(s), the lowermost always basal (next to stem cell) or suprabasal (cf. Zhu & So 2001). Underleaves remote, longer than wide, 1.5−3 times as wide as stem, bilobed to 1/2 their length, sinus U- or V-shaped, lobes narrowly triangular, erect, acute at apex, 3−7 cells long, 3−4 cells wide at base, inner lateral margin nearly entire, outer lateral one usually with a small tooth, insertion line almost straight to subtransverse, base cuneate (never cordate). Androecia intercalary, rarely terminal, usually on long lateral branches or on main shoots, bracts in 2−8 pairs, hypostatic, antheridia 1−2 per bract, subspherical, bracteoles 1−3, borne only at the basal portion of androecium, similar to ordinary underleaves. Gynoecia usually on short or long branches, with 1(−2) pycnolejeuneoid innovations; bracts obovate, deeply and unequally bifid, the lobe broadly obovate, apical margin usually crenulate to slightly dentate, rarely with 1–several ciliate teeth, base with 3–8 ocelli as in leaf lobe, lobule oblong or lingulate, ca. 1/2 as long as the bract lobe, apex obtuse to acute, keel slightly sinuate to straight, ca. 2/3 as long as the lobule; bracteole connate with bracts on both sides at base, oblong, margin nearly entire to slightly dentate, apex bilobed to 1/5−1/4 its length, sinus usually obtuse.
