Abstract

One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. We further tested for conmycorrhizal density dependence (CMDD) to test for benefit from shared mutualists. We found that the strength of CDD varies systematically with mycorrhizal type, with ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibiting higher sapling densities with increasing adult densities than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. Moreover, we found evidence of positive CMDD for tree species of both mycorrhizal types. Collectively, these findings indicate that mycorrhizal interactions likely play a foundational role in global forest diversity patterns and structure.

Abstract

BioJam is a political, artistic, and educational project in which Bay Area artists, scientists, and educators collaborate with youth and communities of color to address historical exclusion of their communities in STEM fields and reframe what science can be. As an intergenerational collective, we co-learn on topics of culture (social and biological), community (cultural and ecological), and creativity. We reject the notion that increasing the number of scientists of color requires inculcation in the ways of the dominant culture. Instead, we center cultural practices, traditional ways of knowing, storytelling, art, experiential learning, and community engagement to break down the framing that positions these practices as distinct from science. The goal of this work is to realize a future in which the practice of science is relatable, accessible, and liberatory.

Abstract

In the classical phase retrieval problem in the Paley-Wiener class $PW_L$ for $L>0$, i.e. to recover $f\in PW_L$ from $|f|$, Akutowicz, Walther, and Hofstetter independently showed that all such solutions can be obtained by flipping an arbitrary set of complex zeros across the real line. This operation is called zero-flipping and we denote by $\mathfrak{F}_a f$ the resulting function. The operator $\mathfrak{F}_a$ is defined even if $a$ is not a genuine zero of $f$, that is if we make an error on the location of the zero. Our main goal is to investigate the effect of $\mathfrak{F}_a$. We show that $\mathfrak{F}_af$ is no longer bandlimited but is still wide-banded. We then investigate the effect of $\mathfrak{F}_a$ on the stability of phase retrieval by estimating the quantity $\inf_{|c|=1}\|cf-\mathfrak{F}_af\|_2$. We show that this quantity is in general not well-suited to investigate stability, and so we introduce the quantity $\inf_{|c|=1}\|c\mathfrak{F}_bf-\mathfrak{F}_af\|_2$. We show that this quantity is dominated by the distance between $a$ and $b$.

Abstract

Deep-water access is arguably the most effective, but under-studied, mechanism that plants employ to survive during drought. Vulnerability to embolism and hydraulic safety margins can predict mortality risk at given levels of dehydration, but deep-water access may delay plant dehydration. Here, we tested the role of deep-water access in enabling survival within a diverse tropical forest community in Panama using a novel data-model approach. We inversely estimated the effective rooting depth (ERD, as the average depth of water extraction), for 29 canopy species by linking diameter growth dynamics (1990-2015) to vapor pressure deficit, water potentials in the whole-soil column, and leaf hydraulic vulnerability curves. We validated ERD estimates against existing isotopic data of potential water-access depths. Across species, deeper ERD was associated with higher maximum stem hydraulic conductivity, greater vulnerability to xylem embolism, narrower safety margins, and lower mortality rates during extreme droughts over 35 years (1981-2015) among evergreen species. Species exposure to water stress declined with deeper ERD indicating that trees compensate for water stress-related mortality risk through deep-water access. The role of deep-water access in mitigating mortality of hydraulically-vulnerable trees has important implications for our predictive understanding of forest dynamics under current and future climates.

8. On the gene expression landscape of cancer

Abstract

A principal component analysis of the TCGA data for 15 cancer localizations unveils the following qualitative facts about tumors: 1) The state of a tissue in gene expression space may be described by a few variables. In particular, there is a single variable describing the progression from a normal tissue to a tumor. 2) Each cancer localization is characterized by a gene expression profile, in which genes have specific weights in the definition of the cancer state. There are no less than 2500 differentially-expressed genes, which lead to power-like tails in the expression distribution functions. 3) Tumors in different localizations share hundreds or even thousands of differentially expressed genes. There are 6 genes common to the 15 studied tumor localizations. 4) The tumor region is a kind of attractor. Tumors in advanced stages converge to this region independently of patient age or genetic variability. 5) There is a landscape of cancer in gene expression space with an approximate border separating normal tissues from tumors.

10. Constraint on the stem cell numbers and division rates posed by the risk of cancer

Abstract

Compiled data for the stem cell numbers, Ns, and division rates, ms, is reanalized in order to show that we can distinguish two groups of human tissues. In the first one, there is a relatively high fraction of maintenance (stem and transit) cells in the tissue, but the division rates are low. The second group, on the other hand, is characterized by very high transit cell division rates, of around one division per day. These groups do not have an embrionary origin. We argue that their properties arise from a combination of the needs of tissue homeostasis (in particular turnover rate) and a bound on cancer risk, which is roughly a linear function of the product Ns ms. The bound on cancer risk leads to a threshold at ms = 8/year, where the fraction of stem cells falls down two orders of magnitude.

Abstract

Mycorrhizae, a form of plant–fungal symbioses, mediate vegetation impacts on ecosystem functioning. Climatic effects on decomposition and soil quality are suggested to drive mycorrhizal distributions, with arbuscular mycorrhizal plants prevailing in low-latitude/high-soil-quality areas and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) plants in high-latitude/low-soil-quality areas. However, these generalizations, based on coarse-resolution data, obscure finer-scale variations and result in high uncertainties in the predicted distributions of mycorrhizal types and their drivers. Using data from 31 lowland tropical forests, both at a coarse scale (mean-plot-level data) and fine scale (20 × 20 metres from a subset of 16 sites), we demonstrate that the distribution and abundance of EcM-associated trees are independent of soil quality. Resource exchange differences among mycorrhizal partners, stemming from diverse evolutionary origins of mycorrhizal fungi, may decouple soil fertility from the advantage provided by mycorrhizal associations. Additionally, distinct historical biogeographies and diversification patterns have led to differences in forest composition and nutrient-acquisition strategies across three major tropical regions. Notably, Africa and Asia’s lowland tropical forests have abundant EcM trees, whereas they are relatively scarce in lowland neotropical forests. A greater understanding of the functional biology of mycorrhizal symbiosis is required, especially in the lowland tropics, to overcome biases from assuming similarity to temperate and boreal regions.

Abstract

The future trajectory of global forests is closely intertwined with tree demography, and a major fundamental goal in ecology is to understand the key mechanisms governing spatio-temporal patterns in tree population dynamics. While previous research has made substantial progress in identifying the mechanisms individually, their relative importance among forests remains unclear mainly due to practical limitations. One approach to overcome these limitations is to group mechanisms according to their shared effects on the variability of tree vital rates and quantify patterns therein. We developed a conceptual and statistical framework (variance partitioning of Bayesian multilevel models) that attributes the variability in tree growth, mortality, and recruitment to variation in species, space, and time, and their interactions – categories we refer to as organising principles (OPs). We applied the framework to data from 21 forest plots covering more than 2.9 million trees of approximately 6500 species. We found that differences among species, the species OP, proved a major source of variability in tree vital rates, explaining 28–33% of demographic variance alone, and 14–17% in interaction with space, totalling 40–43%. Our results support the hypothesis that the range of vital rates is similar across global forests. However, the average variability among species declined with species richness, indicating that diverse forests featured smaller interspecific differences in vital rates. Moreover, decomposing the variance in vital rates into the proposed OPs showed the importance of unexplained variability, which includes individual variation, in tree demography. A focus on how demographic variance is organized in forests can facilitate the construction of more targeted models with clearer expectations of which covariates might drive a vital rate. Abstract

Open science skills are increasingly important for a career in ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB) as efforts to make data and analyses publicly available continue to become more commonplace. While learning core concepts in EEB, students are also expected to gain skills in conducting open science to prepare for future careers. Core open science skills like programming, data sharing, and practices that promote reproducibility can be taught to undergraduate students alongside core concepts in EEB. Yet, these skills are not always taught in biology undergraduate programs, and a major challenge in developing open science skills and learning EEB concepts simultaneously is the high cognitive load associated with learning multiple disparate concepts at the same time. One solution is to provide students with easily digestible, scaffolded, pre‐formatted code in the form of vignettes and interactive tutorials. Here, we present six open source teaching tutorials for undergraduate students in EEB. These tutorials teach fundamental ecological concepts, data literacy, programming (using R software), and analysis skills using publicly available datasets while introducing students to open science concepts and tools. Spanning a variety of EEB topics and skill levels, these tutorials serve as examples and resources for educators to integrate open science tools, programming, and data literacy into teaching EEB at the undergraduate level. Abstract

One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. We further tested for conmycorrhizal density dependence (CMDD) to test for benefit from shared mutualists. We found that the strength of CDD varies systematically with mycorrhizal type, with ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibiting higher sapling densities with increasing adult densities than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. Moreover, we found evidence of positive CMDD for tree species of both mycorrhizal types. Collectively, these findings indicate that mycorrhizal interactions likely play a foundational role in global forest diversity patterns and structure.

Abstract

We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance to examine variation in effect magnitudes across sample and setting. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples and 15,305 total participants from 36 countries and territories. Using conventional statistical significance (p < .05), fifteen (54%) of the replications provided evidence in the same direction and statistically significant as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p < .0001), fourteen (50%) provide such evidence reflecting the extremely high powered design. Seven (25%) of the replications had effect sizes larger than the original finding and 21 (75%) had effect sizes smaller than the original finding. The median comparable Cohen’s d effect sizes for original findings was 0.60 and for replications was 0.15. Sixteen replications (57%) had small effect sizes (< .20) and 9 (32%) were in the opposite direction from the original finding. Across settings, 11 (39%) showed significant heterogeneity using the Q statistic and most of those were among the findings eliciting the largest overall effect sizes; only one effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity. Only one effect showed a Tau > 0.20 indicating moderate heterogeneity. Nine others had a Tau near or slightly above 0.10 indicating slight heterogeneity. In moderation tests, very little heterogeneity was attributable to task order, administration in lab versus online, and exploratory WEIRD versus less WEIRD culture comparisons. Cumulatively, variability in observed effect sizes was more attributable to the effect being studied than the sample or setting in which it was studied.\ud \ud Data, materials and code available at: https://osf.io/8cd4r/

Abstract

•Tree size shapes forest carbon dynamics and determines how trees interact with their environment, including a changing climate. Here, we conduct the first global analysis of among-site differences in how aboveground biomass stocks and fluxes are distributed with tree size. •We analyzed repeat tree censuses from 25 large-scale (4–52 ha) forest plots spanning a broad climatic range over five continents to characterize how aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality vary with tree diameter. We examined how the median, dispersion, and skewness of these size-related distributions vary with mean annual temperature and precipitation. •In warmer forests, aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality were more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity were more right skewed, with a long tail towards large trees. Small trees (1–10 cm diameter) contributed more to productivity and mortality than to biomass, highlighting the importance of including these trees in analyses of forest dynamics. •Our findings provide an improved characterization of climate-driven forest differences in the size structure of aboveground biomass and dynamics of that biomass, as well as refined benchmarks for capturing climate influences in vegetation demographic models.

Abstract

1. Organisms of all species must balance their allocation to growth, survival and recruitment. Among tree species, evolution has resulted in different life-history strategies for partitioning resources to these key demographic processes. Life-history strategies in tropical forests have often been shown to align along a trade-off between fast growth and high survival, that is, the well-known fast–slow continuum. In addition, an orthogonal trade-off has been proposed between tall stature—resulting from fast growth and high survival—and recruitment success, that is, a stature−recruitment trade-off. However, it is not clear whether these two independent dimensions of life-history variation structure tropical forests worldwide. 2. We used data from 13 large-scale and long-term tropical forest monitoring plots in three continents to explore the principal trade-offs in annual growth, survival and recruitment as well as tree stature. These forests included relatively undisturbed forests as well as typhoon-disturbed forests. Life-history variation in 12 forests was structured by two orthogonal trade-offs, the growth−survival trade-off and the stature−recruitment trade-off. Pairwise Procrustes analysis revealed a high similarity of demographic relationships among forests. The small deviations were related to differences between African and Asian plots. 3. Synthesis. The fast–slow continuum and tree stature are two independent dimensions structuring many, but not all tropical tree communities. Our discovery of the consistency of demographic trade-offs and life-history strategies across different forest types from three continents substantially improves our ability to predict tropical forest dynamics worldwide.

Abstract

Deep-water access is arguably the most effective, but under-studied, mechanism that plants employ to survive during drought. Vulnerability to embolism and hydraulic safety margins can predict mortality risk at given levels of dehydration, but deep-water access may delay plant dehydration. Here, we tested the role of deep-water access in enabling survival within a diverse tropical forest community in Panama using a novel data-model approach. We inversely estimated the effective rooting depth (ERD, as the average depth of water extraction), for 29 canopy species by linking diameter growth dynamics (1990-2015) to vapor pressure deficit, water potentials in the whole-soil column, and leaf hydraulic vulnerability curves. We validated ERD estimates against existing isotopic data of potential water-access depths. Across species, deeper ERD was associated with higher maximum stem hydraulic conductivity, greater vulnerability to xylem embolism, narrower safety margins, and lower mortality rates during extreme droughts over 35 years (1981-2015) among evergreen species. Species exposure to water stress declined with deeper ERD indicating that trees compensate for water stress-related mortality risk through deep-water access. The role of deep-water access in mitigating mortality of hydraulically-vulnerable trees has important implications for our predictive understanding of forest dynamics under current and future climates.

Abstract

ForestGEO is a network of scientists and long-term forest dynamics plots (FDPs) spanning the Earth's major forest types. ForestGEO's mission is to advance understanding of the diversity and dynamics of forests and to strengthen global capacity for forest science research. ForestGEO is unique among forest plot networks in its large-scale plot dimensions, censusing of all stems ≥1 cm in diameter, inclusion of tropical, temperate and boreal forests, and investigation of additional biotic (e.g., arthropods) and abiotic (e.g., soils) drivers, which together provide a holistic view of forest functioning. The 71 FDPs in 27 countries include approximately 7.33 million living trees and about 12,000 species, representing 20% of the world's known tree diversity. With >1300 published papers, ForestGEO researchers have made significant contributions in two fundamental areas: species coexistence and diversity, and ecosystem functioning. Specifically, defining the major biotic and abiotic controls on the distribution and coexistence of species and functional types and on variation in species' demography has led to improved understanding of how the multiple dimensions of forest diversity are structured across space and time and how this diversity relates to the processes controlling the role of forests in the Earth system. Nevertheless, knowledge gaps remain that impede our ability to predict how forest diversity and function will respond to climate change and other stressors. Meeting these global research challenges requires major advances in standardizing taxonomy of tropical species, resolving the main drivers of forest dynamics, and integrating plot-based ground and remote sensing observations to scale up estimates of forest diversity and function, coupled with improved predictive models. Johnny Lydon, el músico y cantante del grupo punk Sex Pistols, ha dicho que “la ira es una forma de energía”; y si para Lydon, nada fue sagrado, tampoco lo fue para Leopoldo María Panero. Desde el principio, Panero logró ensamblar su rebelión vital (en contra de la triangulación de Edipo, y de la “santísima familia” burguesa) con su rebeldía poética. Por lo tanto, su an(arquía) es más existencial que política. La traducción de El Anti Edipo al castellano (por Paco Monge) le dio la oportunidad de explorar la teoría esquizoanalítica de Gilles Deleuze y Félix Guattari, y adaptarla tanto a su vida como a su obra. Este ensayo, entonces, emprenderá un planteamiento esquizoanalítico de Panero, tomando en cuenta la ira/“ira” como formas de energía fisiológica y “performativa”. Así, según la tesis de este ensayo, Panero logró producir un gran corpus poético, porque fue capaz de acceder a lo que Deleuze y Guattari llaman el “proceso esquizoanalítico”, y transgredir la estructura edípica vis-à-vis con su propia “producción deseante”. Abstract

— Mesquite (Prosopis laevigata) is a tree of arid and semi-arid areas of northern and central Mexico. This species allows erosion control, atmospheric nitrogen fixation, and improves soil quality. Pseudomonas fluorescens is a rhizobacterium that favors plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Also, promotes seed germination and development of Mesquite plants under adverse environmental conditions. The aim is to evaluate the role of bacterial strains A7 and Sv of P. fluorescens, using two types of soil (vertisol and phaeozem), and adding vermicompost (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 tons/ha) in the germination and growth stages of mesquite (Prosopis laevigata).We tested the characteristics developed by the plants over 180 days. A randomized experimental design with four repetitions was used to test the seed germination rate and 16 more variables in the greenhouse, such as morphology, dry biomass accumulated, and morphological indices through the randomized factorial experimental design with three factors, 2x3x5x3. Regarding the control treatment, the use of the bacterial strain A7 of P. fluorescens inhibited the germination of mesquite seeds, while the strain Sv favored seedlings development. We observed opposite effects; inhibition and growth in the germination stage, and development of the seedlings observed at 180 days when using the A7 and Sv strains of P. fluorescens.

Abstract

Este artículo aborda el modo como los creyentes evangélicos limeños construyen sus prácticas de espiritualidad vivida en un contexto de movilidad, pluralización y desregulación del campo religioso peruano. Nos interesa observar el modo como los creyentes vinculados al protestantismo urbano limeño, ciudad tradicionalmente marcada por la institucionalidad católica y una religiosidad evangélica circunscrita al espacio del templo, desarrollan nuevas vivencias autónomas de la fe e interactúan con otros espacios religiosos y seculares. En ese sentido, nos interesa analizar los nuevos espacios culturales y territorios religiosos desde los cuales el creyente evangélico vive su espiritualidad cotidiana, construye nuevos sentidos y descubre nuevas formas de vivir y de expresar su identidad religiosa, así como su adscripción a la institución religiosa. Este caso nos permite analizar el modo como el contexto de la pluralización del campo religioso y el escenario de la secularización construyen nuevos perfiles para el creyente evangélico que empieza a abrazar determinadas formas de autonomía. This article addresses the way in which evangelical believers of Lima, in Peru, build their practices of lived spirituality in a context of mobility, pluralization and deregulation of the Peruvian religious field. We are interested in observing the way in which believers linked to Lima urban Protestantism, a city traditionally marked by Catholic institutions and by an evangelical religiosity circumscribed to the space of the churches, develop new autonomous experiences of the faith and interact with other religious and secular spaces. In that sense, we are interested in analyzing the new cultural spaces and religious territories from which the evangelical believer lives his/her daily spirituality, builds new senses and discovers new ways of living and expressing his/her religious identity and ascription to the religious institution. This case allows us to analyze the way in which the context of pluralization of the religious field and the scenario of secularization build new profiles for the evangelical believer, who begins to embrace certain forms of autonomy. /

Abstract

El dossier que aquí presentamos trata del tema de la religión vivida (lived religion), y muestra resultados de investigaciones realizadas en tres ciudades latinoamericanas (Córdoba, Lima y Montevideo) y en una ciudad en el sur de Europa (Bilbao) y se coloca en el área de estudios sociológicos sobre la experiencia religiosa, la vida cotidiana, los procesos de autonomía y desinstitucionalización de la vivencia religiosa. Las lecturas y reflexiones abordadas en los textos presentados giran en torno a las implicancias de la religiosidad vivida en el protestantismo contemporáneo, las mismas que nos acercan a mirar las interacciones, narrativas y prácticas de los y las creyentes ligados al protestantismo evangélico en diálogo con los temas y dinámicas de la modernidad. Estos trabajos hacen una contribución valiosa al campo de los estudios sociológicos sobre la religión vivida, poniendo énfasis en el modo como lo/as creyentes seleccionan, adaptan, reinterpretan y hacen reapropiaciones de las prácticas y narrativas religiosas en la vida cotidiana, en un contexto de pluralización del campo religioso.The dossier introduced here deals with the subject of lived religion and presents results of researches carried out in three Latin American cities (Córdoba, Lima and Montevideo) and one city of southern Europe (Bilbao). It falls into the area of sociological studies on religious experience, daily life, the processes of autonomy and deinstitutionalization of religious experience. The reflections addressed in the articles concern the implications of lived religiosity within contemporary Protestantism, the same ones that lead us to looking at the interactions, narratives and practices of believers linked to evangelical Protestantism in dialogue with the themes and dynamics of modernity. These works make a valuable contribution to the field of sociological studies on lived religion, emphasizing the way in which believers select, adapt, reinterpret, and re-appropriate religious practices and narratives in everyday life, in a context of pluralization of the religious field.
