The eruption of the Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha'apai volcano on 15 January 2022 was one of the most explosive eruptions of the last decades. The amount of water vapor injected into the stratosphere was unprecedented in the observational record, increasing the stratospheric water vapor burden by about 10%. Using model runs from the ATLAS chemistry and transport model and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) satellite observations, we show that while 20%–40% more water vapor than usual was entrained into the Antarctic polar vortex in 2023 as it formed, the direct chemical effect of the increased water vapor on Antarctic ozone depletion in June through October was minor (less than 4 DU). This is because low temperatures in the vortex, as occur every year in the Antarctic, limit water vapor to the saturation pressure and thus reset any anomalies through the process of dehydration before they can affect ozone loss. This study synthesized novel, green, and easily recoverable surface-modified economical catalysts via hydrothermal treatment (HT) successfully, utilizing biogas residue biochar (BRB), a food waste product from anaerobic fermentation, pyrolyzed at 500 °C for 50 min. Using autoclaves, a total of six solutions were prepared, each having 1 g fine-grinded BRB, surficial modified by adding glycerol (GL) (10 or 20 mL) and SDI water (70 or 60 mL), and heated in an oven at 240 °C, 180 °C, and 120 °C for 24 h. Afterward, the catalysts showed the potential for degradation of widely used emerging pollutants like ciprofloxacin. Taking advantage of catalytic surface modification, the catalytic ozonation degradation was more effective than that of a single ozonation. However, under similar conditions, catalyst amount 0.20 g, ozone dose 15 mg L -1 , and ciprofloxacin 80 mg L -1 , the performance of the 10 mL GL-180 °C catalyst was excellent. It showed a 92.45%-94.41% optimum removal rate in the 8-10 min interval. After five continuous cycles, the 10 mL GL-180 °C catalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability. XPS, FT-IR, BET, XRD, and SEM before and after the reaction confirmed the successful synthesis and degradation mechanism. A possible degradation pathway was unrevealed based on a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) and scavenger test, proving the significant roles of superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ), hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Further, Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed the presence of active oxygen species. Subsequently, 10 mL GL-180 °C showed promising degradation for the actual water environment, such as groundwater (73.55%) and river water (64.74%). β-caryophyllonic acid (BCA), as an important precursor of aqueous secondary organic aerosols (aqSOA), has adverse effects on the atmospheric environment and human health. However, the key atmospheric chemical reaction process in which BCA participates in the formation of aqueous secondary organic aerosols is still unclear. In this study, the reaction mechanism and kinetics of BCA with ·OH and O 3 were investigated by quantum chemical calculations. The initiation reactions between BCA and ·OH include addition and H-abstraction reaction pathways, subsequent intermediates will also react with O 2 , ultimately undergo a cracking reaction to generate small molecular substances. The reaction of BCA with O 3 can generate primary ozone oxides and the Criegee Intermediates oIM3, subsequent main reaction products include keto-BCA, as well as other small molecule aqSOA precursors. The entire reaction process increases the O/C ratio of aqSOA in the aqueous phase and generates products of small molecules such as 4-formylpropionic acid, which plays an important role in the formation of aqSOA. At 298K, the transformation rate constants of BCA initiated by ·OH and O 3 are 1.47 × 10 10  M -1  s -1 and 3.16 × 10 5  M -1  s -1 , respectively, the atmospheric lifetimes of BCA reacting with ·OH range from 0.86 h-5.40 h, while the lifetimes of BCA reacting with O 3 range from 0.44 h-10.04 years. This suggests that BCA primarily reacts with ·OH. However, under higher O 3 concentrations, its ozonolysis becomes significant, promoting the formation of aqSOA. According to the risk assessment, the toxicity of most transformation products (TPs) gradually decreased, but the residual developmental toxicity could not be ignored. Ultraviolet (UV) light is widely used for disinfection in indoor environments. Some wavelengths of UV light can produce high concentration of O 3 . UV irradiation combined with O 3 may have great potential for nitration of allergens in the presence of NO 2 in the air. In this study, the effects of UV irradiation on the nitration of three major indoor allergens including group Ⅰ allergens of house dust mite (Der p 1 and Der f 1) and group Ⅰ allergen of dog (Can f 1) in the presence of NO 2 and O 3 were investigated by analysis of the protein quantity, tyrosine, peptides, and nitration degree. The results showed that UV irradiation induced a significant increase in the quantity of 3-nitrotyrosine in the allergens from 0.4 ± 0.4 ng to 4.0 ± 0.8 ng. After 12 h of UV-O 3 co-exposure, the total nitration degrees of the three allergens ranged from 0.1% to 0.5%, which were significantly higher than those after only O 3 exposure (p < 0.05). The analysis of peptides revealed that the nitration of tyrosine was site-specific. The tyrosine Y 231 , which was adjacent to aspartic acid, posed the highest nitration degree of 41.1 ± 24.0% in Der p 1. The nitration degree of tyrosine Y 162 was the highest (1.7 ± 0.1%) in Der f 1. Within the scope of this study, two equivalent PM 2.5 samplers were designed and developed to eliminate sampling artifacts in the results of atmospheric particulate organic carbon (OC) and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and gas phase PAH compounds, respectively. A mass loss of less than 10% due to the denuders was observed. Study results showed that if an impregnated denuder is not used, the results of atmospheric particle OC concentrations will be reported with higher values due to positive errors of 53.2 ± 7.23% (median: 52.00%) on average. It was observed that the total error (net error) was still positive, but decreased to an average of 35.1 ± 16.8% (median: 31.0%) after including the negative errors quantified from the backup filter into the calculation. In cases where denuders were not used in the sampling, it was observed that the results with positive errors of 41.0 ± 14.6% (median: 33.8%) on average would be obtained for the total PAHs. Ozone-induced negative interference was the highest in Acenapthylene (28%), followed by Fluoranthane (20%), Phenanthrene (18%), and 15% for Np and Benzo[g,h,i]perylene compounds, relative to their medians. The effectiveness of ozonation, one of the techniques known for destroying organic contaminants from wastewater, depends on the composition of the wastewater matrix. The required ozone (O 3 ) dose is determined based on the target compounds during ozonation. Hydroxyl radicals are quantified using a probe compound. The para-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA) is typically used as a probe compound to measure hydroxyl radicals. However, real-time measurement is impossible, as the analysis process consumes time and resources. This study aimed to evaluate the spectroscopic characteristics of various organic substances in wastewater ozonation through fluorescence excitation-emission matrix and parallel factor analysis. The study also demonstrated that real-time analyzable tryptophan-like fluorescence (TLF) can be used as a hydroxyl radical index. Importantly, the correlation between para-chlorobenzoic acid and TLF was derived, and the results showed a high correlation (R 2  = 0.91), confirming the reliability of our findings. Seven trace organic compounds, classified based on their reactivity with O 3 and hydroxyl radicals, were selected as target compounds and treated with O 3 . The TLF index was used as a model factor for the removal rate of the target compounds. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are consumed by photochemical reactions during transport, leading to inaccuracies in estimating the local ozone (O 3 ) formation mechanism and its subsequent strategy for O 3 attainment. To comprehensively quantify the deviations in O 3 formation mechanism by consumed VOCs (C-VOCs), a 5-month field campaign was conducted in a typical industrial city in Northern China over incorporating a 0-D box model (implemented with MCMv3.3.1). The averaged C-VOCs concentration was 6.8 ppbv during entire period, and Alkenes accounted for 62% dominantly. Without considering C-VOCs, the relative incremental reactivity (RIR) of anthropogenic VOCs (AVOC, overestimated by 68%-75%) and NO x (underestimated by 137%-527%) demonstrated deviations at multiple scenarios, and the RIR deviations for precursors in High-O 3 -periods (HOP) were lower than Low-O 3 -periods (LOP). The RIR deviations from individual species involved C-VOCs calculation did not impact the identification for the high-ranking-RIR AVOC species but non-negligible. Monthly comparisons showed that higher C-VOCs concentrations would lead to higher RIR deviations. The daily maximum of net O x production rate (P(O x )) and the regional transport O x (Trans(O x )) without C-VOCs were underestimated by 56%-194% and 81%-243%, respectively. After considering C-VOCs, the contribution of HO 2 +NO for O x gross production (G(O x )) decreased by 7% (LOP) and 7% (HOP), but OH + NO 2 for O x destruction (D(O x )) decreased by 16% (LOP) and 23% (HOP), and alkenes + O 3 increased for D(O x ) by 12% (LOP) and 22% (HOP). This implies that VOCs-NO x -O 3 sensitivity was deviated between with/without C-VOCs, and severe O 3 pollution rendered deviations in O 3 formation, especially via NO x -driving chemistry. Based on RIR(NO x )/RIR(AVOC) with/without C-VOCs, the sensitivity regime shifted from VOCs-limited (-0.93) to transition (1.38) at LOP, and from VOCs-limited (0.19) to NO x -limited (3.79) at HOP. E-peroxone process is an emerging electrochemical oxidation process, based on ozone and the in-situ cathodic generation of H 2 O 2 , but the stability of cathode is one of the key restraining factors. In this study, we designed a multilayer gas diffusion electrode (GDE) decorated with a commercial hydrophobic membrane for the degradation of pyridine. It was found that a proper control of membrane pore sizes and hot-pressing temperature can significantly promote the GDE stability. Subsequently, key operational parameters of the constructed E-peroxone system were investigated, including the ozone concentration, current density, pH value, electrolyte type and initial concentration of pyridine. The degradation pathways were proposed according to six identified transformation products. The toxicity variation along the degradation progress was evaluated with microbial respiration tests and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.) calculation and an efficient detoxification capacity of E-peroxone was observed. In this study, a co-catalytic route was explored to enhance the photo-ozone catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). NiCo 2 O 4 was loaded onto the surface of CeO 2 nanoparticles to create a composite catalyst (10%NiCo 2 O 4 /CeO 2 ). The integration of NiCo 2 O 4 onto CeO 2 enhanced the interaction between the catalyst and toluene, a representative VOC, resulting in significantly increased toluene adsorption without a corresponding increase in specific surface area. This integration also improved the utilization of charge carriers and conversion of ozone to O 2 - . Under visible light irradiation, H 2 O accumulated charge carriers at 10%NiCo 2 O 4 /CeO 2 's surface, facilitating both ozone utilization and toluene adsorption. Another benefit of NiCo 2 O 4 loading was its ability to enhance the conversion efficiency of solar energy. Consequently, the toluene removal and mineralization efficiencies of 10%NiCo 2 O 4 /CeO 2 were enhanced by 182% and 309% compared to CeO 2 , and by 201% and 357% compared to NiCo 2 O 4 , respectively. The present study employed powdered activated coke (PAC) for the adsorptive removal of refractory COD from the bio-treated paper wastewater (BTPW). The adsorption reached equilibrium after 3 h, resulting in a decrease in the COD concentration from 98.9 mg L -1 in BTPW to 42.6 mg L -1 when utilizing a PAC dosage of 5 g L -1 . The dominant fractions of dissolved organic matter in BTPW were hydrophilic acids (HIA), hydrophilic neutrals (HIN), and hydrophobic acids (HOA), accounting for 48.8%, 34.2%, and 17.0% of the total dissolved organic carbon, respectively. Three fractions were all predominantly composed of humic/fulvic acid-like substances, while the HOA fraction exhibited highest susceptibility to adsorption by PAC, followed by the HIA and HIN fractions. FT-ICR MS data revealed PAC preferentially adsorbed the unsaturated and oxygen-rich substances containing more carboxyl groups. Additionally, the spent PAC was regenerated through ozonation and subsequently utilized in the adsorption cycles. The regeneration was successfully conducted under an ozone concentration of 1 mg L -1 for a duration of 10 min, and the regeneration efficiency remained about 87.0% even after undergoing five-cycle of adsorption-regeneration. Shape-controlled nanocrystals, such as nanoflowers, are expected to serve as innovative nanocatalysts with high catalytic activity. It is well-established that these nanocrystals can be readily synthesized with specific shapes using colloidal methods in solutions containing capping agents. However, these capping agents tend to reduce the catalytic activity of nanocatalysts. Therefore, it is imperative to remove these agents without altering the morphology to enhance catalytic efficiency. In this study, we developed a method for eliminating melamine, a common capping agent, from supported Au nanoflowers using water extraction and ultraviolet-ozone treatment. This process significantly enhances the catalytic performance, particularly for alcohol oxidation reactions such as the conversion of 1-phenylethyl alcohol to acetophenone.

Raspberry plants need intensive anti-fungal protection. A solution to this problem could be the application of an ozonation process. For this purpose, a technical solution was proposed and implemented in raspberry plant production. The proposal suggests replacing 25% of standard fungicide treatments with ozonation. It was demonstrated that the use of ozone under the proposed conditions made it possible to maintain stable parameters of chlorophyll content and fluorescence (no significant differences), but the intensity of gas exchange was increased. The greatest differences were observed in the second measurement period (T2), when the plants were in the stage of most active development. Additionally, the content and profile of low-molecular-weight antioxidants and the microbial load were determined in the collected fruits. In periods T2 and T3, the proposed method caused a reduction reaching ~2 log cfu g -1 in the microbial content of raspberry fruits. It was shown that ozone treatment intensified the biosynthesis of low-molecular-weight antioxidants in fruit (increasing the total polyphenol content by more than 20%). The proposed scheme allows a 25% reduction in standard fungicide treatments while maintaining the health of cultivated raspberry plants. The reduction in fungicide use aligns with the EU regulations and produces fruit with better quality.

While sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) has long been used to disinfect drinking water, concerns have risen over its use due to causing potentially hazardous byproducts. Catalytic ozonation with metal-free catalysts has attracted increasing attention to eliminate the risk of secondary pollution of byproducts in water treatment. Here, we compared the disinfection efficiency and microbial community of catalytic ozone with a type of metal-free catalyst fluorinated ceramic honeycomb (FCH) and NaClO disinfectants under laboratory- and pilot-scale conditions. Under laboratory conditions, the disinfection rate of catalytic ozonation was 3∼6-fold that of ozone when the concentration of Escherichia coli was 1 × 10 6  CFU/ml, and all E. coli were killed within 15 s. However, 0.65 mg/L NaClO retained E. coli after 30 min using the traditional culturable approach. The microorganism inactivation results of raw reservoir water disinfected by catalytic ozonation and ozonation within 15 s were incomparable based on the cultural method. In pilot-scale testing, catalytic ozonation inactivated all environmental bacteria within 4 min, while 0.65 mg/L NaClO could not achieve this success. Both catalytic ozonation and NaClO-disinfected methods significantly reduced the number of microorganisms but did not change the relative abundances of different species, i.e., bacteria, viruses, eukaryotes, and archaea, based on metagenomic analyses. The abundance of virulence factors (VFs) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) was detected few in catalytic ozonation, as determined by metagenomic sequencing. Some VFs or ARGs, such as virulence gene 'FAS-II' which was hosted by Mycobacterium&#95;tuberculosis, were detected solely by the NaClO-disinfected method. The enriched genes and pathways of cataO 3 -disinfected methods exhibited an opposite trend, especially in human disease, compared with NaClO disinfection. As it flows through the city of São Paulo, the Tietê River receives heavy discharges of industrial effluents and domestic sewage, resulting from the city's continuous urban expansion and the inadequacy of its sanitary sewage system. This study focused on an analysis of the efficiency of PGα21Ca and quaternary ammonium tannate, water purification products, based on coagulation-flocculation and sedimentation tests, followed by treatment with a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor associated with ozonation in the treatment of Tietê River water. The removal of turbidity, apparent color, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were evaluated. Jar testing assays were conducted, and the best turbidity removal rates were obtained with a concentration of 300 mg L-1 for PGα21Ca and 150 mg L-1 for quaternary ammonium tannate. The coagulation-flocculation treatment removed approximately 93% of turbidity for both coagulants. After combining coagulation-flocculation with hydrodynamic cavitation with ozonation, the final COD removal rate applying PGα21Ca was 47.63% in 1 hour of reaction, while that of quaternary ammonium tannate was 40.13% in 2 hours of reaction. Although the results appear to indicate the superior performance of PGα21Ca, it should be noted that the treatment with quaternary ammonium tannate also provided good results in reducing turbidity, COD, and apparent color, using a smaller dose of this coagulant and that its use may be more advantageous from an environmental point of view, due to its natural composition.

This study proposes a novel and eco-friendly approach for wastewater treatment using plasma jet technology under bubble condition. This method allows for the controlled production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH•) while minimizing unwanted interactions with nitrogen in the air. The presence of bubbles in liquid significantly boosts the diffusion of OH• within the wastewater, leading to a two-fold increase in degradation rate compared to normal condition. The effectiveness of the treatment was confirmed through ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, which showed a significant decrease in rhodamine B and methyl orange absorbance peaks. Raman spectroscopy further revealed structural changes in both pollutants, indicating successful degradation. Additionally, plasma characteristics like power, electron temperature, and density were monitored to gain deeper insights into the underlying mechanism. Importantly, the process minimizes the formation of harmful secondary pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen oxides. These pollutants were found under concentration of 0.14 mg m -3 which is below established safety thresholds, adhering to World Health Organization guidelines. This research demonstrates that plasma jet treatment in bubble condition not only enhances the degradation efficiency of pollutants in wastewater but also minimizes the formation of harmful byproducts. The application of nano-catalysts in improving the ozonation removal efficiency for refractory organic compounds has been extensively investigated. However, cost-effective nano-catalysts separation remains a challenge. In this study, membrane separation processes were employed to separate nano-MgO catalysts from an ozonation system. A continuous nano-catalytic ozonation membrane separation (nCOMS) coupling system was successfully constructed for treating quinoline. The results showed that long hydraulic retention time (HRT) and high nano-MgO dosage could improve the quinolone removal efficiency but shorten operation cycles. At the optimal operation conditions of HRT = 4 h and nano-MgO dosage = 0.2 g/L, the nCOMS system achieved a stable quinoline removal efficiency of 85.2% for 240 min running with a transmembrane pressure lower than 10 kPa. The quinoline removal efficiency contribution for ozonation, catalysis and membrane separation was 57.1%, 24.9% and 18.0%, respectively. Compared to ozonation membrane separation system, the fouling rate index of the nCOMS system increased by 60% under optimal conditions, but the irreversible fouling was reduced to 28%. In addition, the nCOMS system exhibited reduced adverse effects of coexisting natural organic matter (NOM) on quinoline removal and membrane fouling. Vehicle exhaust is one of the major organic sources in urban areas. Old taxis equipped with failed three-way catalysts (TWCs) have been regarded as "super emitters". Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a regular substitution fuel for gasoline in taxis. The relative effect of fuel substitution and TWC failure has not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, vehicle exhausts from gasoline and CNG taxis with optimally functioning and malfunctioning TWCs are sampled by Tenax TA tubes and then analyzed by a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC×GC-MS). A total of 216 organics are quantified, including 80 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and 132 intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs). Failure of TWC introduces super emitters with 30 - 70 times emission factors (EFs), 60 - 112 times ozone formation potentials (OFPs), and 34 - 92 times secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) more than normal vehicles. Specifically, for the taxi with failed TWC, the total organic EF of CNG is 16 times that of gasoline, indicating that the failure of TWC exceeds the emission reduction achieved by CNG-gasoline substitution. A significant but unbalanced reduction of ozone and SOA is observed after TWC, whereas a notable "enrichment" in IVOCs was observed. Naphthalene is a typical IVOC component strongly associated with CNG-gasoline substitution and TWC failure, which is lacking in current VOC measurement. Exposure to ozone (O 3 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) are related to pulmonary dysfunctions and various lung diseases, but the underlying biochemical mechanisms remain uncertain. Herein, the effect of inhalable oxidizing gas pollutants on the pulmonary surfactant (PS, extracted from porcine lungs), a mixture of active lipids and proteins that plays an important role in maintaining normal respiratory mechanics, is investigated in terms of the interfacial chemistry using in-vitro experiments; and the oxidative stress induced by oxidizing gases in the simulated lung fluid (SLF) supplemented with the PS is explored. The results showed that O 3 and NO 2 individually increased the surface tension of the PS and reduced its foaming ability; this was accompanied by the surface pressure-area isotherms of the PS monolayers shifting toward lower molecular areas, with O 3 exhibiting more severe effects than NO 2 . Moreover, both O 3 and NO 2 produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in lipid peroxidation and protein damage to the PS. The formation of superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) was correlated with the decomposition of O 3 and the reactions of O 3 and NO 2 with antioxidants in the SLF. These radicals, in the presence of antioxidants, led to the formation of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). Additionally, the direct oxidation of unsaturated lipids by O 3 and NO 2 further caused an increase in the ROS content. This change in the ROS chemistry and increased • OH production tentatively explain how inhalable oxidizing gases lead to oxidative stress and adverse health effects. In summary, our results indicated that inhaled O 3 and NO 2 exposure can significantly alter the interfacial properties of the PS, oxidize its active ingredients, and induce ROS formation in the SLF. Non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma has received great attention for degradation of persistent organic pollutants such as p-nitrophenol (PNP). However, the feasibility of the DBD implementation is not clear due to its high energy consumption and relatively low degradation efficiency. In this research, a novel strategy was suggested based on re-circulation of the generated O 3 in the DBD system to enhance the PNP degradation efficiency and energy yield. The potential mechanism and possible pathway of PNP degradation were studied by EPR, ESR, DFT and GS-MS analytical tests. According to the results, the PNP degradation efficiency and energy yield increased from 57.4% to 94.4% and from 0.52 to 1.18 g kW -1 h -1 , respectively through ozone circulation into the DBD reactor. This was due to the more release of long-lived and short-lived reactive species (ROS) in the DBD-O 3 system by the O 3 circulation. The variations in pH (4-10), initial concentration (50-90 mg L -1 ), and the presence of co-existing substances in the water matrix had minimal impact on the DBD-O 3 system, in comparison to the conventional system. The biological toxicity evaluation revealed that the hybrid DBD-O 3 system transform PNP to less toxic intermediates. This prospective work focuses on the use of two different gaseous oxidants (chlorine dioxide and ozone) to remediate soil polluted with methomyl in two different applications: ex-situ and in-situ. In the first, the soil washing is integrated with the bubbling of the oxidant, while in the second, the gas was introduced by a perforated pipe located sub-superficially. Regarding the soil washing treatment, results demonstrate that direct use of ozone is not very efficient, although an important improvement is obtained following activation with hydrogen peroxide or UV light. In contrast, chlorine dioxide exhibited complete methomyl depletion from the soil, although with higher energy consumption and technical complexity compared to ozone. The direct dosing of the gaseous oxidants in perforated pipes is effective, achieving methomyl removals of 7.8 % and 9.2 % using ozone and chlorine dioxide, respectively. In these cases, soil conditions are not significantly modified, which becomes an important advantage of the technology as compared with other electrochemically assisted soil remediation process, in which large regions of the treated soil are affected by important changes in the pH or by depletion of ions. Lonicera caerulea L. fruits are a rich source of vitamins, organic acids, and phenolic compounds, which are characterised by their health-promoting properties. The content of bioactive compounds in this fruit may vary depending on the cultivar and the harvest date. This study analysed the effect of applying 5 ppm gaseous ozone for 1, 3, and 5 min on the chemical properties of L. kamtschatica varieties and newly created clones of L. emphyllocalyx for three years of cultivation. The fruits harvested from L. emphyllocalyx , depending on the year of harvest, had significantly larger size and weight compared to L. kamtschatica . On average, the acidity of the L. emphyllocalyx clones was 6% higher than other tested varieties. The average content of ascorbic acid was highest in L. emphyllocalyx clone '21-17'-57.80 mg·100 g -1 ; the year of harvest will significantly affect the content of vitamin C, reaching the highest level in 2022-53.92 mg·100 g -1 . The total content of polyphenols was significantly dependent on the year of cultivation; reaching, on average, 54.8% more in 2022 compared to the rest of the years. The total antioxidant value using the FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS methods varied depending on the variety; exposure to ozone significantly increased the antioxidant value in each case. On the basis of the study, both botanical varieties can be used in food processing. Gaseous ozone exposure can significantly influence chemical composition, increasing the health-promoting value of fruit.

Infectious and foodborne diseases pose significant global threats, with devastating consequences in low- and middle-income countries. Ozone, derived from atmospheric oxygen, exerts antimicrobial effects against various microorganisms, and degrades fungal toxins, which were initially recognized in the healthcare and food industries. However, highly concentrated ozone gas can be detrimental to human health. In addition, ozonated water is unstable and has a short half-life. Therefore, ultrafine-bubble technology is expected to overcome these issues. Ultrafine bubbles, which are nanoscale entitles that exist in water for considerable durations, have previously demonstrated bactericidal effects against various bacterial species, including antibiotic-resistant strains. This present study investigated the effects of ozone ultrafine bubble water (OUFBW) on various bacterial toxins. This study revealed that OUFBW treatment abolished the toxicity of pneumolysin, a pneumococcal pore-forming toxin, and leukotoxin, a toxin that causes leukocyte injury. Silver staining confirmed the degradation of pneumolysin, leukotoxin, and staphylococcal enterotoxin A, which are potent gastrointestinal toxins, following OUFB treatment. In addition, OUFBW treatment significantly inhibited NF-κB activation by Pam3CSK4, a synthetic triacylated lipopeptide that activates Toll-like receptor 2. Additionally, OUFBW exerted bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, including an antibiotic-resistant strain, without displaying significant toxicity toward human neutrophils or erythrocytes. Lignin, a natural pol2ymer with a complex structure that is difficult to separate, is prone to C-C bond condensation during the separation process. To reduce the condensation of lignin, here, a novel method is proposed for separating the components by using a combination of maleic acid (MA)/ozone (O 3 ) to co-treat wheat straw. The removal of lignin, glucan, and xylan was 38.07 ± 0.2%, 31.44 ± 0.1%, and 71.98 ± 0.1%, respectively, under the conditions of ball-milling of wheat straw for 6 h, reaction temperature of 60 °C, and O 3 holding time of 9 min. Lignin-rich solutions were collected to extract the dissolved lignin (DL) after washing the treated samples. The DL obtained under MA/O 3 conditions had a carboxyl group (-COOH) content of 2.96 mmol/g. The carboxyl group of MA underwent esterification with the hydroxyl group (-OH) at the γ position of lignin and O 3 reacted on the positions of the lignin side chain or the phenolic ring, resulting in a break in the side chain and the opening of the phenolic ring to introduce the carboxyl group. The 2D-HSQC-NMR results revealed that the phenolic ring-opening reaction of lignin in the presence of O 3 was essentially free of β-β and β-5 condensation bonds.

This work presents a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) for degradation of emerging organic pollutants - benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEXs) in water. A comparative study was performed for sonocavitation assisted ozonation under 40-120 kHz and 80-200 kHz dual frequency ultrasounds (DFUS). Based on the obtained results, the combination of 40-120 kHz i.e., low-frequency US (LFDUS) with O 3 exhibited excellent oxidation capacity degrading 99.37-99.69% of BTEXs in 40 min, while 86.09-91.76% of BTEX degradation was achieved after 60 min in 80-200 kHz i.e., high-frequency US (HFDUS) combined with O 3 . The synergistic indexes determined using degradation rate constants were found as 7.86 and 2.9 for LFDUS/O 3 and HFDUS/O 3 processes, respectively. The higher extend of BTEX degradation in both processes was observed at pH 6.5 and 10. Among the reactive oxygen species (ROSs), hydroxyl radicals (HO • ) were found predominant according to scavenging tests, singlet oxygen also importantly contributed in degradation, while O 2 •- radicals had a minor contribution. Sulfate (SO 4 2- ) ions demonstrated higher inhibitory effect compared to chloride (Cl - ) and carbonate (CO 3 2- ) ions in both processes. The world is facing water crises because freshwater scarcity has become a global issue due to rapid population growth, resulting in the need for more industries, agriculture, and domestic sectors. Therefore, it is challenging for scientists and environmental engineers to treat wastewater with cost-effective treatment techniques. As compared to conventional processes (physical, chemical, and biological), advanced oxidation processes (AOP) play an essential role in the removal of wastewater contaminants, with the help of a powerful hydroxyl (OH•) through oxidation reactions. This review study investigates the critical role of O 3 -based Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) in tackling the complex difficulties of wastewater treatment. Effective treatment methods are critical, with wastewater originating from various sources, including industrial activity, pharmaceutical manufacturing, agriculture, and a wide range of toxins. O 3 -based AOPs appear to be powerful therapies capable of degrading a wide range of pollutants, including stubborn organics, medicines, and pesticides, reducing environmental and human health risks. This review sheds light on their efficacy in wastewater treatment by explaining the underlying reaction mechanisms and applications of several O 3 -based AOP processes, such as O 3 , O 3 /UV, and O 3 /H 2 O 2 . Ozone, a powerful oxidizing agent, stimulates the breakdown of complex chemical molecules by oxidation processes, which are aided further by synergistic combinations with ultraviolet (UV) radiation or hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Notably, while ozonation alone may not always produce the best outcomes, it acts as an essential pretreatment step prior to traditional treatments, increasing total treatment efficiency. Furthermore, O 3 -based AOPs' transformational capacity to convert organic chemicals into simpler, more stable inorganic forms with little sludge creation emphasizes its sustainability and environmental benefits. A comparative study explored how photoaging, ozonation aging, and Fenton aging affect tire wear particles (TWPs) and their phosphorus (P) removal in activated sludge. Aging altered TWPs' properties, increasing surface roughness, porosity, and generating more small particles, especially environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in ozonation and Fenton aging. Post-aging TWPs (50 mg/L) inhibited sludge P removal significantly (p < 0.05), with rates of 44.3% and 59.6% for ozonation and Fenton aging, respectively. In addition, the metabolites involved in P cycling (poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates: PHA and glycogen) and essential enzymes (Exopolyphosphatase: PPX and Polyphosphate kinase: PPK) were significantly inhibited (p < 0.05). Moreover, TWPs led to a decrease in microbial cells within the sludge and altered the community structure, a situation exacerbated by the aging of TWPs. P-removing bacteria decreased (e.g., Burkholderia, Candidatus), while extracellular polymeric substance-secreting bacteria increased (e.g., Pseudomonas, Novosphingobium). The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in changed emission regimes all over the world. India also imposed complete lockdown on all modes of travel and industrial activities for about 2 months from 25-March-2020 and later unlocked these activities in a phased manner. Here, we study signatures of emissions changes on levels of atmospheric trace gases and aerosols contributing to air pollution over multiple sites in India’s capital Delhi covering various lockdown and unlock phases using satellite data and in-situ observations. The resulting changes in the levels of these species were compared with respect to their average of 2015–2019 to attribute for year to year and seasonal changes. A clear impact of lockdown was observed for AOD, PM, NO2, CO, and SO2 as a result of emission changes, while changed precursor levels led to a change in O3 chemical regimes impacting its concentrations. A detailed analysis of FLEXPART trajectories revealed increased PM levels over Delhi in north-westerly air masses sourced to Punjab region all the way up to Pakistan. Changes in aerosols and NO2 were not only restricted to the surface but transcended the total tropospheric column. The maximum decrease in PM, NO2, CO, and SO2 was observed during the month of total lockdown in April. The lockdown impact varied with species e.g., PM10 and PM2.5 as well as locations even within the periphery of Delhi. While surface level aerosols and NO2 showed significant and almost similar changes, AOD showed much lower decrease than tropospheric column NO2.

A composite material, cow dung-doped sludge biochar (Zn@SBC-CD), was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis using ZnCl 2 as an activating agent and applied to a catalytic ozonation process (COP) for methylene blue (MB) removal. SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and BET analyses were performed to characterize the biochar (BC) catalysts. Zn@SBC-CD had high graphitization degree, abundant active sites and uniform distribution of Zn on its surface. Complete removal of MB was achieved within 10 min, with a removal rate much higher than that of ozone alone (32.4%), implying the excellent ozone activation performance of Zn@SBC-CD. The influence of experimental parameters on MB removal efficiency was examined. Under the optimum conditions in terms of ozone dose 0.04 mg/mL, catalyst dose 400 mg/L and pH 6.0, COD was completely removed after 20 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed radical and non-radical pathways were involved in MB degradation. The Zn@SBC-CD/O 3 system generated superoxide anion radicals ( • O 2 - ), which were the main active species for MB removal, through adsorption, transformation, and transfer, Furthermore, Zn@SBC-CD exhibited good reusability and stability in cycling experiments. In this study, a new catalyst for catalytic ozonation was obtained by in-situ growth of Mn-Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets on the surface of nickel foam (NF). The full degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was accomplished under optimal conditions in 40 min. The effects of material dosage, ozone dosage, pH and the presence of inorganic anions on the degradation efficiency of PNP were investigated. ESR analysis showed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radical (O 2 •- ) are the main contributors of PNP degradation. The treatment of waterborne micropollutants, such as diclofenac, presents a significant challenge to wastewater treatment plants due to their incomplete removal by conventional methods. Ozonation is an effective technique for the degradation of micropollutants. However, incomplete oxidation can lead to the formation of ecotoxic by-products that require a subsequent post-treatment step. In this study, we analyze the susceptibility of micropollutant ozonation products to enzymatic digestion with laccase from Trametes versicolor to evaluate the potential of enzymatic treatment as a post-ozonation step. The omnipresent micropollutant diclofenac is used as an example, and the enzymatic degradation kinetics of all 14 detected ozonation products are analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS 2 ). The analysis shows that most of the ozonation products are responsive to chemo-enzymatic treatment but show considerable variation in enzymatic degradation kinetics and efficiencies. Mechanistic investigation of representative transformation products reveals that the hydroxylated aromatic nature of the ozonation products matches the substrate spectrum, facilitating their rapid recognition as substrates by laccase. However, after initiation by laccase, the subsequent chemical pathway of the enzymatically formed radicals determines the global degradability observed in the enzymatic process. Substrates capable of forming stable molecular oxidation products inhibit complete detoxification by oligomerization. Ground-level ozone has long posed a substantial menace to human well-being and the ecological milieu. The widely reported manganese-based catalysts for ozone decomposition still facing the persisting issues encompass inefficiency and instability. To surmount these challenges, we developed a mesoporous silica thin films with perpendicular nanochannels (SBA(⊥)) confined Mn 3 O 4 catalyst (Mn 3 O 4 @SBA(⊥)). Under a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 500,000 mL g -1 h -1 , the Mn 3 O 4 @SBA(⊥) catalyst exhibited 100% ozone decomposition efficiency in 5 h and stability across a wide humidity range, which exceed the performance of bulk Mn 3 O 4 and Mn 3 O 4 confine in commonly reported SBA-15. Rapidly decompose 20 ppm O 3 to a safety level below 100 μg m -3 in the presence of dust in smog chamber (60 × 60 × 60 cm) was also realized. This prominent catalytic performance can be attributed to the unique confined structure engenders the highly exposed active sites, facilitate the reactant-active sites contact and impeded the water accumulation on the active sites. Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are prevalent contaminants in drinking water and are primarily linked to issues regarding water quality. These contaminants have been associated with various adverse health effects. Among different treatment processes, nanofiltration (NF) has demonstrated superior performance in effectively reducing the levels of DBPs compared to conventional processes and ozone-biological activated carbon (O 3 -BAC) processes. In this experiment, we systematically investigated the performance of three advanced membrane filtration treatment schemes, namely "sand filter + nanofiltration" (SF + NF), "sand filter + ozone-biological activated carbon + nanofiltration" (SF + O 3 -BAC + NF), and "ultrafiltration + nanofiltration" (UF + NF), in terms of their ability to control disinfection by-product (DBP) formation in treated water, analyzed the source and fate of DBP precursors during chlorination, and elucidated the role of precursor molecular weight distribution during membrane filtration in relation to DBP formation potential (DBPFP). The results indicated that each treatment process reduced DBPFP, as measured by trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP), with the SF + O 3 -BAC + NF process being the most effective (14.27 μg/L and 14.88 μg/L), followed by the SF + NF process (21.04 μg/L and 16.29 μg/L) and the UF + NF process (26.26 μg/L and 21.75 μg/L). Tyrosine, tryptophan, and soluble microbial products were identified as the major DBP precursors during chlorination, with their fluorescence intensity decreasing gradually as water treatment progressed. Additionally, while large molecular weight organics (60-100,000 KDa) played a minor role in DBPFP, small molecular weight organics (0.2-5 KDa) were highlighted as key contributors to DBPFP, and medium molecular weight organics (5-60 KDa) could adhere to the membrane surface and reduce DBPFP. In this study, neural networks and support vector regression (SVR) were employed to predict the degradation over three pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs): Ibuprofen (IBP), diclofenac (DCF), and caffeine (CAF) within a stirred reactor featuring a flotation cell with two non-concentric ultraviolet lamps. A total of 438 datapoints were collected from published works and distributed into 70% training and 30% test datasets while cross-validation was utilized to assess the training reliability. The models incorporated 15 input variables concerning reaction kinetics, molecular properties, hydrodynamic information, presence of radiation, and catalytic properties. It was observed that the Support Vector Regression (SVR) presented a poor performance as the ε hyperparameter ignored large error over low concentration levels. The traditional aviary decontamination process involves farmers applying pesticides to the aviary's ground. These agricultural defenses are easily dispersed in the air, making the farmers susceptible to chronic diseases related to recurrent exposure. Industry 5.0 raises new pillars of research and innovation in transitioning to more sustainable, human-centric, and resilient companies. Based on these concepts, this paper presents a new aviary decontamination process that uses IoT and a robotic platform coupled with ozonizer (O 3 ) and ultraviolet light (UVL). These clean technologies can successfully decontaminate poultry farms against pathogenic microorganisms, insects, and mites. Also, they can degrade toxic compounds used to control living organisms. This new decontamination process uses physicochemical information from the poultry litter through sensors installed in the environment, which allows accurate and safe disinfection. Different experimental tests were conducted to construct the system. First, tests related to measuring soil moisture, temperature, and pH were carried out, establishing the range of use and the confidence interval of the measurements. The robot's navigation uses a back-and-forth motion that parallels the aviary's longest side because it reduces the number of turns, reducing energy consumption. This task becomes more accessible because of the aviaries' standardized geometry. Furthermore, the prototype was tested in a real aviary to confirm the innovation, safety, and effectiveness of the proposal. Tests have shown that the UV + ozone combination is sufficient to disinfect this environment.

Currently, nanobubbles are widely discussed in environmental research due to their unique properties, including significant specific surface area, transfer efficiency, and free radical generation. In this study, O 2 and O 3 nanobubbles (diameters ranging from 0 to 500 nm) were combined with conventional surfactant technology to investigate their enhanced efficacy in removing diesel contaminants from soil. The impact of various factors such as surfactant concentration, temperature, and soil aging duration on pollutant removal rates was examined across different experimental approaches (stirring/flushing). Soil samples subjected to different treatments were characterized using TG-DTG and FTIR analysis, while GC/MS was employed to assess the degradation products of diesel constituents in the soil. The results indicated that the elution efficiencies of the three surfactants (SDS, SDBS, and TX-100) for diesel in soil correlated positively with concentration (0.3-1.4 CMC) and temperature (18-60 °C), and inversely with aging time (10-300 days), with the elution capacity was SDS > SDBS > TX-100. Mechanical stirring (500 rpm) and temperature variations (18-60 °C) did not affect the stability of the nanobubbles. Upon the introduction of O 3 nanobubbles to the surfactant solution, there was a consistent increase in both the removal (degraded and removed) efficiency and rate of diesel under varying experimental conditions, resulting in an enhancement of removal rates by approximately 8-15%. FTIR spectroscopy showed that surfactants containing O 3 nanobubbles mitigated the impact on the primary functional groups of soil organic matter. GC/MS analyses indicated that residual pollutants were predominantly alkanes, with degradation difficulty ranking as: alkanes < alkenes < cycloalkanes < aromatic compounds. TG-DTG coupled with GC/MS analysis demonstrated that O 3 nanobubbles contributed to a reduction in surfactant residues. Combination of oxidation processes are one of the most promising humic acid treatment technologies. Single oxidant or even two oxidants in advance oxidation process can hardly achieve satisfactory removal efficiency of refractory organic matter, mainly humic acid, in the treatment process of reverse osmosis concentrates from landfill leachate. To solve this problem, this study investigated the synergistic degradation of Humic acid (HA) using a Cu and Co supported on carbon catalyst (CuCo/C) in a Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) with ozone (O 3 ) system. The catalyst was characterized by performing SEM, XRD, BET, XPS and FTIR technologies. UV-vis spectra, 3D Excitation Emission Matrix Spectra (3D-EEM) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were applied for exploring degradation mechanism of HA. To further understand the oxidation mechanism, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to evaluate the generation of hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide radicals (O 2 ·- ). As a result, CuCo/C catalyst possessed stable catalytic performance for HA degradation with a wide pH range from 5 to 8, while T = 40 °C，catalyst dosage of 2.4 g/L，O 3 intake rate of 0.15 g/min and H 2 O 2 dosage of 1.92 mL/L, the degradation rate of total organic carbon (TOC) achieved 40-46.5 mg·L -1 min -1 . As affirmed by the EPR, ·OH and O 2 ·- were effectively generated with addition of the CuCo/C catalyst. Degradation performance of UV 254 proved that the catalytic activity can still be maintained above 95% with removal rate of 82% after 5 cycles reuse. GC-MS shows that the oxidation products mainly consist of amide, benzoheterocyclic ring and carboxylic acid. The degradation of three anti-cancer drugs (ADs), Capecitabine (CAP), Bicalutamide (BIC) and Irinotecan (IRI), in ultrapure water by ozonation and UV-irradiation was tested in a bench-scale reactor and AD concentrations were measured through ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). A low-pressure mercury UV (LP-UV) lamp was used and degradation by UV (λ = 254 nm) followed pseudo-first order kinetics. Incident radiation in the reactor was measured via chemical actinometry using uridine. The quantum yields (φ) for the degradation of CAP, BIC and IRI were 0.012, 0.0020 and 0.0045 mol Einstein -1 , respectively. Ozone experiments with CAP and IRI were conducted by adding ozone stock solution to the reactor either with or without addition of tert-butanol (t-BuOH) as radical quencher. Using this experimental arrangement, no degradation of BIC was observed, so a semi-batch setup was employed for the ozone degradation experiments of BIC. Without t-BuOH, apparent second order reaction rate constants for the reaction of the ADs with molecular ozone were determined to be 3.5 ± 0.8 ∙ 10 3  L mol -1 s -1 (CAP), 7.9 ± 2.1 ∙ 10 -1  L mol -1 s -1 (BIC) and 1.0 ± 0.3 ∙ 10 3  L mol -1 s -1 (IRI). When OH-radicals (∙OH) were quenched, rate constants were virtually the same for CAP and IRI. For BIC, a significantly lower constant of 1.0 ± 0.5 ∙ 10 -1  L mol -1 s -1 was determined. Of the tested substances, BIC was the most recalcitrant, with the slowest degradation during both ozonation and UV-irradiation. The extent of mineralization was also determined for both processes. UV irradiation was able to fully degrade up to 80% of DOC, ozonation up to 30%. This study developed an efficient and stable landfill leachate treatment process, which was based on the combination of biochar catalytic ozonation and activated sludge technology for intensive treatment of landfill leachate, aiming to achieve the standard discharge of leachate. The focus is to investigate the effect of manganese loading on the physicochemical properties of biochar and the mechanism of its catalytic ozonation. It was found that more surface functional groups (CO, Mn-O, etc.) and defects (I D /I G  = 1.27) were exposed via the change of original carbon structure by loading Mn, which is conducive to the generation of lattice oxygen. Meanwhile, generating different valence states of Mn metal can improve the redox properties and electron migration rate, and encourage the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the reaction process and enhance the catalytic efficiency. The synergistic action of microorganisms, especially denitrifying bacteria, was found to play a key role in the degradation of nitrogenous pollutants during the activated sludge process. The concentration of NH + 4 -N was reduced from the initial 1087.03 ± 9.56 mg/L to 9.05 ± 1.91 mg/L, while COD was reduced from 2290 ± 14.14 mg/L to 86.5 ± 2.12 mg/L, with corresponding removal rates of 99.17% and 99.20%, respectively. This method offers high efficiency and stability, achieving discharge standards for leachate (GB16889-2008). The synergy between Mn-loaded biochar and microorganisms in the activated sludge is key to effective treatment. Biogas obtained from livestock manure is used as fuel for solid oxide fuel cells. Although H 2 S is a typical biogas, it is a fatal disadvantage for fuel-cell power generation and, thus, must be removed. In this study, we proposed an effective method for sulfide removal from water using a multi-hole dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. In this system, active species, such as ozone, ultraviolet rays, hydroxyl radicals, and hydrogen peroxide, were simultaneously generated. Under optimal conditions, dissolved sulfide (initial concentration: 120 mg/L) was completely degraded within 10 min in air plasma and 6 min in oxygen plasma. Changes in the physical properties of the sulfide-treated water were confirmed by measuring the pH, oxidation-reduction potential, and dissolved oxygen. Results of the by-product analysis showed that sulfide was converted into sulfate by reacting with a large amount of ozone, and the active species were emitted from the multi-hole DBD system. Pesticides in the atmosphere can exist in both gaseous and particulate phases due to their semi-volatile properties. They can undergo degradation when exposed to atmospheric oxidants like ozone and hydroxyl radicals. The majority of studies on the atmospheric reactivity of pesticides study them in combination, without considering potential mixture effects that could induce uncertainties in the results. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap, through laboratory studies using a flow reactor, and by evaluating the degradation kinetics of pendimethalin mixed with folpet, tebuconazole, and S-metolachlor, which were simultaneously adsorbed on hydrophobic silica particles that mimic atmospheric aerosols. The comparison with other mixtures, including pendimethalin, from the literature has shown similar reactivity with ozone and hydroxyl radicals, indicating that the degradation kinetics of pesticides is independent of the mixture. Moreover, the degradation rates of the four pesticides under study indicate that they are not or slightly degraded by ozone, with half-lives ranging from 29 days to over 800 days. Sulfamethoxazole and metronidazole are emerging pollutants commonly found in surface water and wastewater. These compounds have a significant environmental impact, being necessary in the design of technologies for their removal. Recently, the advanced oxidation process has been proven successful in the elimination of this kind of compounds. In this sense, the present work discusses the application of UV/H 2 O 2 and ozonation for the degradation of both molecules in single and binary systems. Experimental kinetic data from O 3 and UV/H 2 O 2 process were adequately described by a first and second kinetic model, respectively. From the ANOVA analysis, it was determined that the most statistically significant variables were the initial concentration of the drugs (0.03 mmol L -1 ) and the pH = 8 for UV/H 2 O 2 system, and only the pH (optimal value of 6) was significant for degradation with O 3 . Results showed that both molecules were eliminated with high degradation efficiencies (88-94% for UV/H 2 O 2 and 79-98% for O 3 ) in short reaction times (around 30-90 min). The modeling was performed using a quadratic regression model through response surface methodology representing adequately 90 % of the experimental data. On the other hand, an artificial neural network was used to evaluate a non-linear multi-variable system, a 98% of fit between the model and experimental data was obtained. The identification of degradation byproducts was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a time mass detector. The present study investigates the treatment of real coke plant effluent utilising several ultrasound-based hybrid oxidation approaches including Ultrasound (US) alone, US + catalyst, US + H 2 O 2 , US + Fenton, US + Ozone, and US + Peroxone, with main objective as maximizing the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Ultrasonic horn at power of 130 W, frequency as 20 kHz and duty cycle as 70% was applied. Study with varying catalyst (TiO 2 ) dose from 0.5 g/L - 2 g/L revealed 1 g/L as the optimum dose resulting in 65.15% reduction in COD. A 40 ml/L dose of H 2 O 2 was shown to be optimal, giving an 81.96% reduction in COD, based on the study of varied doses of H 2 O 2 from 20 ml/L to 60 ml/L. US + Fenton reagent combination at optimum Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 (w/v) ratio of 1:1 resulted in a COD reduction of 85.29% whereas reduction of COD as 81.75% was obtained at the optimum flow rate of ozone as 1 LPM for US + Ozone approach. US + Peroxone demonstrated the best efficiency (90.48%) for COD reduction. To find the toxicity effects, the treated (US + peroxone) and non-treated samples were tested for the growth of bacterial cultures. It was observed that the toxicity of the treated sample increased only marginally after treatment. High-resolution liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HR-LCMS) analysis was also performed to establish intermediate compounds. Alkene ozonolysis can produce stabilized Criegee intermediates (SCIs), which play a key role in oligomers' formation. Though styrene and isoprene coexist in the ambient atmosphere as important anthropogenic and biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors, respectively, their cross-reactions have not received attention. This study investigated the interactions of SCIs from styrene and isoprene ozonolysis for the first time. The high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer was used to determine the unique ion mass spectra of the isoprene-styrene-O 3 mixture. The results show that the signal intensities of new ions account for >8.4% of total ions in the mass spectra of the styrene-isoprene-O 3 mixed system. Styrene and isoprene ozonolysis can produce characteristic C 7 -SCI and C 4 -SCI, respectively. C 7 -SCI and C 4 -SCI can be involved in the cross-reactions, and the results of tandem mass spectra directly confirmed both C 7 -SCI and C 4 -SCI as chain units. The O/C and H/C ratios of cross-products are in the range of 0.38-1.07 and 1.00-1.50, respectively, which are consistent with cross-reaction products. Adding a C 7 -SCI unit reduces the oligomer's volatility by 1.3-1.4 orders of magnitude lower than adding a C 4 -SCI unit. Thus, C 4 -SCI can compete with C 7 -SCI to react with styrene-derived RO 2 /RC(O)OH to produce more volatile cross-products, while the less volatile cross-products can be formed when isoprene-derived RO 2 /RC(O)OH reacted with C 7 -SCI instead of C 4 -SCI. The SOA yield of the mixed system is lower than that of the single styrene-O 3 system but higher than that of the single isoprene-O 3 system. Ambient particles were also collected, and 5 possible SCI-related cross-products were identified. Green and low carbon is an essential direction for the development of water treatment technology. Ozone catalysts prepared by the mixing method have advantages in terms of energy consumption and CO 2 emissions, but are considered to be insufficient in catalytic efficiency and stability. In this paper, an Mn-Cu-Ce/Al 2 O 3 (MCCA) catalyst was prepared by optimizing the preparation conditions of the mixing method and the types and ratios of active components. Taking petrochemical secondary effluent (PCSE) as the treatment object, the performance of the catalyst and the carbon emission in the preparation process were studied; and compared with the impregnation method. Results showed that compared with catalysts loaded with other components, the MCCA had a higher removal efficiency for TOC (43.04%) and COD (53.18%), which was basically equivalent to the impregnation method, and the treated effluent reached the expected concentration. MCCA promoted the decomposition rate of O 3 by ten times, and the main active species generated were found to be •OH and 1 O. Similar to the catalytic ozonation by the catalyst prepared by the impregnation method, the adsorption sites and surface hydroxyl groups on the MCCA surface play a significant role in the degradation of pollutants. However, the carbon emission in the catalyst preparation process of the mixing method was 418.68 kg/ton, which was only 44% of the impregnation method (949.67 kg/ton). The treatment of real-time textile effluent, collected from the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) of Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) at Kannur (District), Kerala (State), India, have been studied by utilizing the Fenton-like and ozone (O 3 ) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The Fenton-like AOP has been conducted as the pre-treatment of textile effluent involving the activation of persulfate (PS) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) as a single and the mixed oxidants by using the Flyash (FA)-Pd composite particles as the activator. The maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 84% has been observed for a stand-alone O 3 based treatment at an O 3 flow rate of 5-6 g h -1 . By conducting the pre-treatment of textile effluent with the PS, H 2 O 2 , and mixed oxidants (PS and H 2 O 2 ) based Fenton-like AOPs, the COD removal after an O 3 based post-treatment has been observed to be 83, 87, and 93% respectively at an O 3 flow rate of 2, 3, and 5 g h -1 . Hence, the Fenton-like pre-treatment involving the activation of mixed oxidants has been determined to be the best method for the highest COD removal of real-time textile effluent. The optimum values of initial oxidant-ratio (initial [H 2 O 2 ]:initial [PS]), initial oxidant-dosage, and ozonation time, for the mixed oxidants based Fenton-like pre-treatment, have been determined to be 3 wt% mM -1 , 6:2 wt% mM -1 , and 60 min respectively. The degradation process of bisphenol S (BPS) in ozone/peroxymonosulfate (O 3 /PMS) system was systematically explored. The results showed that the removal efficiency of BPS by O 3 could be significantly improved with addition of PMS. Compared with ozonation alone, the pseudo-first-order constant (k obs ) was increased by 2-5 times after adding 400 μM PMS. In O 3 /PMS system, accelerated removal of BPS was observed under neutral and alkaline conditions. The removal efficiency of BPS reached 100% after 40 s of reaction at pH 7.0, with the k obs of 0.098 s -1 . Moreover, Cu 2+ had a catalytic effect on the O 3 /PMS system, because it could catalyze the decomposition of ozone and PMS to produce •OH and SO 4 •- , respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance illustrated that •OH and SO 4 •- were the reactive species in O 3 /PMS system. Twelve intermediates were identified by mass spectrometry, and the degradation reactions in O 3 /PMS system mainly included hydroxylation, sulfate addition, polymerization and β-scission. Finally, the toxicity of the products was evaluated by the EOCSAR program. The elimination of microplastics (MPs) has become an urgent issue due to their large quantities and imperfect treatment technologies. In this work, polyethylene (PE), which is ubiquitous in the environment, was selected to study its removal by ozone-based treatment. Catalysts including α-MnO 2 and α-FeOOH were synthesized for catalytic ozonation to improve efficiency. The study focused on simulating the conversion of CO 2 in the off-gas via the detection of inorganic carbon produced. The morphology and structure of the remaining PE MPs were characterized using scanning electron microscope and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection. Our results confirmed that fragmentation and oxidation occurred in the remaining PE MPs, which enhanced the adsorption capacity of ofloxacin (OF). Besides, the 20 mM α-FeOOH could better improve the mineralization efficiency by 3.27 folds with more production of •OH (1.09*10 -12  M). Moreover, possible products identified by liquid chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometer confirmed the decomposition of main chains of MPs into low-molecular-weight organic compounds with functional groups such as C-OH, C-O-C, and CO. Fe and N co-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe-N-CNT) was synthesized and attempted as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for simultaneous catalysis of H 2 O 2 and O 3 to improve electro-peroxone (Fe-N-CNT/EP) process efficiency for atrazine (ATZ) degradation. The removal and mineralization of ATZ was significantly enhanced, obtaining the degradation rate constant (k) by Fe-N-CNT/EP (0.23 min -1 ) about two times that of EP (0.12 min -1 ) owing to the formation of Fe 0 and Fe-N coordination in Fe-N-CNT catalyst for co-catalysis of H 2 O 2 and O 3 . The important factors such as applied current and ozone concentration were investigated, demonstrating that the optimized performance could be achieved at current of 30 mA and ozone concentration of 55 mg L -1 . The oxidation capacity of Fe-N-CNT/EP maintained stably under wide pH range of 3∼7, obtaining the degradation rate constant 1.23-1.92 times that of EP and overcoming the defect of EP at acidic and neutral conditions. Capture experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments verified that . OH, generated by accelerating decomposition of H 2 O 2 /O 3 and peroxone reaction, was the dominant active specie in Fe-N-CNT/EP. Besides, Fe-N-CNT showed high catalytic activity and good stability during six cycles.
