We investigated the effects of the interaction between the body and gravitational axes on vection (visually induced self-motion perception) in school-age children and adults. Experiment 1 was a pilot study of adults that was conducted to determine the appropriate experimental settings for the main experiment that included children and adults. The adult participants experienced vection in four different directions in the head-centered coordinate (forward, backward, upward, and downward) under two postural conditions: standing (in which the body and gravitational axes were consistent) and supine (in which the body orientation was orthogonally aligned to the gravitational axis). The adults reported more rapid and longer lasting vection when standing than when supine. In the main experiment (Experiment 2), we tested adults and school-age children under conditions similar to those of Experiment 1 and found that the reported vection was more rapid and longer lasting in children than in adults, whereas the reported vection tended to be more rapid and longer lasting under the standing condition than the supine condition for both age groups. Background: It is unclear whether or not the breakpoint (BP), at which the proportion of each of fat mass (FM) and fat-free soft tissue mass (FFSTM) to body mass (BM) alter, exists in male athletes. We examined the hypothesis that in male athletes, the regional FM and FFSTM-BM relationships have a BP, but the body mass at BP (BM BP ) differs among the arms, trunk, and legs., Methods: By using a dual X-ray absorptiometry, whole-body and regional FMs and FFSTMs in the arms, trunk, and legs were estimated in 198 male athletes (20.8 ± 2.1 years; 1.73 ± 0.07 m; 72.7 ± 14.8 kg). To detect the BP in the relationship between each of FM and FFSTM and BM, a piecewise linear regression analysis was used. If a BP was detected in the corresponding relationship, the significant difference between the regression slopes above and below the BP was examined., Results: The regression analysis indicated that the BM BP existed in the FM- and FFSTM-BM relationships regardless of region and whole body. For the whole body, BM BP was 81.8 kg for FM and 82.2 kg for FFSTM. In regional FM-BM relationships, BM BP was 80.5 kg for arms, 82.6 kg for trunk, and 63.3 kg for legs, and the regression slopes above the BM BP became higher than those below the BP, and vice versa in regional FFSTM-BM relationships (BM BP 104.6 kg for arms, 80.9 kg for trunk, and 79.0 kg for legs). The relative differences in the slopes between below and above BM BP in the regional FM-BM relationships were higher in the arms and trunk than in the legs, and those in the regional FFSTM-BM relationships in the legs than in the trunk., Conclusion: Whole-body and regional FM- and FFSTM-BM relationships for male athletes have breakpoints at which the proportion of the tissue masses to BM alters. The BM BP and differences in the distribution of regional FM and FFSTM around the breakpoint are region specific.

Increased incidence of kidney disease (KD) is a common concern in human and companion animals. Cats, in particular, are highly susceptible to KD. Novel KD biomarkers would help to address these problems. Therefore, we are focusing on microRNA, a highly conserved nucleic acid, as a KD biomarker for various animals. We previously reported that altered levels of urinary exosome (UExo)-derived microRNAs indicate renal pathologies in dogs. This study comprehensively examined UExo-derived microRNAs, which reflected the KD status in cats. The examined cats were divided into two groups: normal renal function (NR) and KD. Based on our previous data in dogs and cats, as well as the present data on UExo-derived microRNAs in cats by next-generation sequencing, let-7b, let-7f, miR-10a, miR-10b, miR-21a, miR-22, miR-26a, miR-27b, miR-146a, miR-181a, miR-191, and miR-486a were identified as biomarker candidates. In summary, the levels of UExo-derived let-7b, miR-22, and miR-26a significantly decreased in cats with KD from the early stages of the disease. UExo-derived miRNA levels normalized to urinary creatinine or total RNA of miR-21a was significantly higher in the KD group. Importantly, the ratio of UExo-derived miR-21a to let-7b showed a significant and strongest correlation with serum creatinine (ρ = 0.751), blood urea nitrogen (ρ = 0.754), and urinary creatinine (ρ = -0.421) among all examined indices. Further, the ratio of miR-181a to let-7b or miR-10b significantly correlated with the progression of renal dysfunction in the KD group. Thus, we identified that UExo-derived microRNAs in cats, and their raw and normalized levels could indicate altered renal function.

It is unknown whether body size and body shape parameters can be predictors for estimating whole body fat-free mass (FFM) in male athletes. This study aimed to investigate whether body size and shape variables can be predictors for FFM in male athletes. Using a whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner, whole body fat mass (FM) and FFM were determined in 132 male athletes and 14 sedentary males. The sample was divided into two groups: validation (N = 98) and cross-validation (N = 48) groups. Body height (BH), body mass (BM), and waist circumference at immediately above the iliac crest (W) were measured. BM-to-W and W-to-BH ratios were calculated as indices of body shapes. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that BM/W and W/BH were selected as explainable variables for predicting FFM. The equation developed in the validation group was FFM (kg) = 0.883 × BM/W (kg/m) + 43.674 × W/BH (cm/cm)- 41.480 [R2 = 0.900, SEE (%SEE) = 2.3 kg (3.8%)], which was validated in the cross-validation group. Thus, the current results demonstrate that an equation using BM/W and W/BH as independent variables is applicable for predicting FFM in male athletes.

MicroRNAs act as post-transcriptional regulators, and urinary exosome (UExo)-derived microRNAs may be used as biomarkers. Herein, we screened for UExo-derived microRNAs reflecting kidney disease (KD) status in dogs. Examined dogs were divided into healthy kidney control (HC) and KD groups according to renal dysfunction. We confirmed the appearance of UExo having irregular globe-shapes in a dog by immunoblot detection of the exosome markers, TSG101 and CD9. Based on our previous data using KD model mice and the data obtained herein by next generation sequencing of UExo-derived microRNAs in dogs, miR-26a, miR-146a, miR-486, miR-21a, and miR-10a/b were selected as candidate microRNAs. In particular, UExo-derived miR-26a and miR-10a/b were significantly decreased in KD dogs, and miR-26a levels negatively correlated with deteriorated renal function compared to the other miRNAs. UExo-derived miR-21a levels corrected or not to that of internal control microRNAs in UExo, miR-26a and miR-191, significantly increased with renal dysfunction. In kidney tissues, the decrease of miR-26a and miR-10a/b in the glomerulus and miR-10b in the tubulointerstitium negatively correlated with deteriorated renal function and histopathology. Increased miR-21a in the tubulointerstitium rather than in the glomerulus correlated with deteriorated renal histopathology. In conclusion, microRNAs reflecting the changes in renal function and histopathology in dogs were identified in this study.

Eight amylose tris(ethylcarbamate) (ATEC) samples ranging in the weight-average molar mass M(w) from 1.0 × 10(4) to 1.1 × 10(6) g mol(-1) and five amylose tris(n-hexylcarbamate) (ATHC) samples of which M(w) varies from 4.9 × 10(4) to 2.2 × 10(6) g mol(-1) have been prepared from enzymatically synthesized amylose samples having narrow dispersity indices and no branching. Small-angle angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), light scattering, viscometry, and infrared (IR) absorption measurements were carried out for their dilute solutions, that is, ATEC in tetrahydrofuran (THF), 2-methoxyethanol (2ME), methanol (MeOH), and ATHC in THF and 1-propanol (1PrOH) to determine M(w), particle scattering functions, intrinsic viscosities, and IR spectra. SAXS and viscosity measurements were also made on ATEC in d- and l-ethyl lactates. The data were analyzed in terms of the wormlike cylinder model to estimate the helix pitch (or contour length) per residue h and the Kuhn segment length λ(-1) (stiffness parameter, twice the persistence length). Both ATEC and ATHC have large λ(-1) in THF, that is, 33 and 75 nm, respectively, and smaller λ(-1) were obtained in alcohols, indicating that they have rigid helical conformation stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds in THF. On the contrary, the helical structure estimated from the h value significantly depends on the alkyl side groups in a complex fashion, that is, h = 0.36 nm for ATEC, h = 0.29 nm for ATHC, and h = 0.26 nm for amylose tris(n-butylcarbamate) (ATBC). This is likely related to the bulkiness of side groups packed inside the amylosic helices. The solvent dependence of h, λ(-1), and the fraction f(hyd) of intramolecular hydrogen bonds for ATEC can be explained by a current model as is the case with ATBC [ Terao , K. ; Macromolecules 2010 , 43 , 1061 ], in which each contour point along the chain takes loose helical and rigid helical sequences independently.

The formal syntheses of (+)-prelaureatin (1) and (+)-laurallene (2), halogenated eight-membered-ring ethers, are described. The key step of our strategy relies on diastereoselective construction of a trans-alpha,alpha'-disubstituted oxocene structure through a Brook rearrangement-mediated [3 + 4] annulation with acryloylsilane 9 and 6-oxa-2-cycloheptenone derivative 22'.

We report a rare case of thrombosis in the inferior vena cava (IVC) due to enlarged cysts in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. A 71-year-old woman visited our hospital with a complaint of rapid left lower extremity swelling. Computed tomography (CT) revealed massive thrombosis from the IVC to the bilateral common iliac vein. The extrinsic mechanical stress of renal cysts to the IVC seemed to have induced thrombosis in the vein that resulted in the cause of severe edema in the left lower extremity. Her renal cysts were percutaneously punctured for the relief of compression and she received injection of 99.5% ethanol for prevention against reaccumulation of cyst fluid after IVC filter had been positioned. The edema of her left lower extremity improved temporarily, however, follow-up CT two months after cyst puncture showed reaccumulation of the fluid. Therefore, excision of the responsible cyst wall by open surgery was carried out.

The age-adjusted, heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated as a parameter for the severity of heart failure and its prognosis. HRV was obtained by 24-h Holter monitoring in patients with left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification, echocardiography, radioisotope ventriculography, and blood examination were performed, and compared between patients and normal subjects. The evaluation was repeated during the follow-up period. Finally, using the lower limit of HRV, patients were divided into either normal or abnormal group for each low-frequency power (LF) and high-frequency power (HF) (age-adjusted HRV). Other parameters of heart failure and prognosis were compared between these 2 groups. HRV tended to be lower in patients with LVD. HF decreased at the early stage of heart failure, but did not decrease progressively. LF decreased progressively. HRV change paralleled the change of NYHA. The abnormal HRV group showed a poor prognosis for cardiac death, but not for sudden cardiac death. In patients with LVD, HRV was decreased compared with the normal subjects. Change in HRV correlated with the change in NYHA classification. Age-adjusted HRV correlated with cardiac-death prognosis, but not for sudden cardiac death.
