Interplanetary shocks are fundamental constituents of the heliosphere, where they form as a result of solar activity. We use previously unavailable measurements of interplanetary shocks in the inner heliosphere provided by Solar Orbiter, and present a survey of the first 100 shocks observed in situ at different heliocentric distances during the rising phase of solar cycle 25. The fundamental shock parameters (shock normals, shock normal angles, shock speeds, compression ratios, Mach numbers) have been estimated and studied as a function of heliocentric distance, revealing a rich scenario of configurations. Comparison with large surveys of shocks at 1~au show that shocks in the quasi-parallel regime and with high speed are more commonly observed in the inner heliosphere. The wave environment of the shocks has also been addressed, with about 50\% of the events exhibiting clear shock-induced upstream fluctuations. We characterize energetic particle responses to the passage of IP shocks at different energies, often revealing complex features arising from the interaction between IP shocks and pre-existing fluctuations, including solar wind structures being processed upon shock crossing. Finally, we give details and guidance on the access use of the present survey, available on the EU-project ``solar energetic particle analysis platform for the inner heliosphere'' (SERPENTINE) website. The algorithm used to identify shocks in large datasets, now publicly available, is also described.

Context. On 2022 January 20, the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) on board Solar Orbiter measured a solar energetic particle (SEP) event showing unusual first arriving particles from the anti-Sun direction. Near-Earth spacecraft separated 17{\deg} in longitude to the west from Solar Orbiter measured classic antisunward-directed fluxes. STEREO-A and MAVEN, separated 18{\deg} to the east and 143{\deg} to the west from Solar Orbiter respectively, also observed the event, suggesting that particles spread over at least 160{\deg} in the heliosphere. Results. Solar Orbiter was embedded in a MC erupting on 16 January from the same active region as the one related to the SEP event on 20 January. The SEP event is related to a M5.5 flare and a fast CME-driven shock of 1433 km/s, which injected particles within and outside the MC. The hard SEP spectra, the presence of a Type II radio burst, and the co-temporal Type III radio bursts being observed from 80 MHz that seems to emanate from the Type II, points to the shock as the relevant accelerator of the particles. Conclusions. The detailed analysis of the SEP event strongly suggest that the energetic particles are injected mainly by a CME-driven shock into and outside of a previous MC present in the heliosphere at the time of the particle onset. The sunward propagating SEPs measured by Solar Orbiter are produced by the injection of particles along the longer (western) leg of the MC still connected to the Sun at the time of the release of the particles. The determined electron propagation path length inside the MC is around 30% longer than the estimated length of the loop leg of the MC itself (based on the graduated cylindrical shell model) consistent with a low number of field line rotations., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

Spins and oscillators are foundational to much of physics and applied sciences. For quantum information, a spin 1/2 exemplifies the most basic unit, a qubit. High angular momentum spins (HAMSs) and harmonic oscillators provide multi-level manifolds (e.g., qudits) which have the potential for hardware-efficient protected encodings of quantum information and simulation of many-body quantum systems. In this work, we demonstrate a new quantum control protocol that conceptually merges these disparate hardware platforms. Namely, we show how to modify a harmonic oscillator on-demand to implement a continuous range of generators associated to resonant driving of a harmonic qudit, which we can interpret as accomplishing linear and nonlinear control over a harmonic HAMS degree of freedom. The spin-like dynamics are verified by demonstration of linear spin coherent (SU(2)) rotations, nonlinear spin control, and comparison to other manifolds like simply-truncated oscillators. Our scheme allows the first universal control of such a harmonic qudit encoding: we use linear operations to accomplish four logical gates, and further show that nonlinear harmonicity-preserving operations complete the logical gate set. Our results show how motion on a closed Hilbert space can be useful for quantum information processing and opens the door to superconducting circuit simulations of higher angular momentum quantum magnetism., Comment: Additional figures, updated text

We report direct observations of a fast magnetosonic forward--reverse shock pair observed by Solar Orbiter on March 8, 2022 at the short heliocentric distance of 0.5 au. The structure, sharing some features with fully-formed stream interaction regions (SIRs), is due to the interaction between two successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs), never previously observed to give rise to a forward--reverse shock pair. The scenario is supported by remote observations from the STEREO-A coronographs, where two candidate eruptions compatible with the in-situ signatures have been found. In the interaction region, we find enhanced energetic particle activity, strong non-radial flow deflections and evidence of magnetic reconnection. At 1~au, well radially-aligned \textit{Wind} observations reveal a complex event, with characteristic observational signatures of both SIR and CME--CME interaction, thus demonstrating the importance of investigating the complex dynamics governing solar eruptive phenomena., Comment: Accepted in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter (SolO) missions opened a new observational window in the inner heliosphere, which is finally accessible to direct measurements. On September 05, 2022, a coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven interplanetary (IP) shock has been observed as close as 0.07 au by PSP. The CME then reached SolO, which was well radially-aligned at 0.7 au, thus providing us with the opportunity to study the shock properties at so different heliocentric distances. We characterize the shock, investigate its typical parameters and compare its small-scale features at both locations. Using the PSP observations, we investigate how magnetic switchbacks and ion cyclotron waves are processed upon shock crossing. We find that switchbacks preserve their V--B correlation while compressed upon the shock passage, and that the signature of ion cyclotron waves disappears downstream of the shock. By contrast, the SolO observations reveal a very structured shock transition, with a population of shock-accelerated protons of up to about 2 MeV, showing irregularities in the shock downstream, which we correlate with solar wind structures propagating across the shock. At SolO, we also report the presence of low-energy ($\sim$ 100 eV) electrons scattering due to upstream shocklets. Magnetic switchbacks are localised polarity reversals in the radial component of the heliospheric magnetic field. Observations from Parker Solar Probe (PSP) have shown that they are a prevalent feature of the near-Sun solar wind. However, observations of switchbacks at 1 au and beyond are less frequent, suggesting that these structures evolve and potentially erode through yet-to-be identified mechanisms as they propagate away from the Sun. We analyse magnetic field and plasma data from the Magnetometer and Solar Wind Analyser instruments aboard Solar Orbiter between 10 August and 30 August 2021. During this period, the spacecraft was 0.6 to 0.7 au from the Sun. We identify three instances of reconnection occurring at the trailing edge of magnetic switchbacks, with properties consistent with existing models describing reconnection in the solar wind. Using hodographs and Walen analysis methods, we test for rotational discontinuities (RDs) in the magnetic field and reconnection-associated outflows at the boundaries of the identified switchback structures. Based on these observations, we propose a scenario through which reconnection can erode a switchback and we estimate the timescales over which this occurs. For our events, the erosion timescales are much shorter than the expansion timescale and thus, the complete erosion of all three observed switchbacks would occur well before they reach 1 au. Furthermore, we find that the spatial scale of these switchbacks would be considerably larger than is typically observed in the inner heliosphere if the onset of reconnection occurs close to the Sun. Hence, our results suggest that the onset of reconnection must occur during transport in the solar wind in our cases. From 2022 March 18-21, active region (AR) 12967 was tracked simultaneously by Solar Orbiter (SO) at 0.35 au and Hinode/EIS at Earth. During this period, strong blue-shifted plasma upflows were observed along a thin, dark corridor of open field originating at the AR's leading polarity and continuing towards the southern extension of the northern polar coronal hole. A potential field source surface (PFSS) model shows large lateral expansion of the open magnetic field along the corridor. Squashing factor Q-maps of the large scale topology further confirm super-radial expansion in support of the S-Web theory for the slow wind. The thin corridor of upflows is identified as the source region of a slow solar wind stream characterised by approx. 300 km s-1 velocities, low proton temperatures of approx. 5 eV, extremely high density over 100 cm-3, and a short interval of moderate Alfvenicity accompanied by switchback events. When connectivity changes from the corridor to the eastern side of the AR, the in situ plasma parameters of the slow wind indicate a distinctly different source region. These observations provide strong evidence that the narrow open field corridors, forming part of the S-Web, produce extreme properties in their associated solar wind streams., Comment: Accepted ApJ

Mirror modes are ubiquitous in space plasma and grow from pressure anisotropy. Together with other instabilities, they play a fundamental role in constraining the free energy contained in the plasma. This study focuses on mirror modes observed in the solar wind by Solar Orbiter for heliocentric distances between 0.5 and 1 AU. Typically, mirror modes have timescales from several to tens of seconds and are considered quasi-MHD structures. In the solar wind, they also generally appear as isolated structures. However, in certain conditions, prolonged and bursty trains of higher frequency mirror modes are measured, which have been labeled previously as mirror mode storms. At present, only a handful of existing studies have focused on mirror mode storms, meaning that many open questions remain. In this study, Solar Orbiter has been used to investigate several key aspects of mirror mode storms: their dependence on heliocentric distance, association with local plasma properties, temporal/spatial scale, amplitude, and connections with larger-scale solar wind transients. The main results are that mirror mode storms often approach local ion scales and can no longer be treated as quasi-MHD, thus breaking the commonly used long-wavelength assumption. They are typically observed close to current sheets and downstream of interplanetary shocks. The events were observed during slow solar wind speeds and there was a tendency for higher occurrence closer to the Sun. The occurrence is low, so they do not play a fundamental role in regulating ambient solar wind but may play a larger role inside transients.

The discovery of novel inhibitor molecules for emerging drug-target proteins is widely acknowledged as a challenging inverse design problem: Exhaustive exploration of the vast chemical search space is impractical, especially when the target structure or active molecules are unknown. Here we validate experimentally the broad utility of a deep generative framework trained at-scale on protein sequences, small molecules, and their mutual interactions -- that is unbiased toward any specific target. As demonstrators, we consider two dissimilar and relevant SARS-CoV-2 targets: the main protease and the spike protein (receptor binding domain, RBD). To perform target-aware design of novel inhibitor molecules, a protein sequence-conditioned sampling on the generative foundation model is performed. Despite using only the target sequence information, and without performing any target-specific adaptation of the generative model, micromolar-level inhibition was observed in in vitro experiments for two candidates out of only four synthesized for each target. The most potent spike RBD inhibitor also exhibited activity against several variants in live virus neutralization assays. These results therefore establish that a single, broadly deployable generative foundation model for accelerated hit discovery is effective and efficient, even in the most general case where neither target structure nor binder information is available., Comment: Revised title, abstract, and text; additional figures

Context. Solar Orbiter and PSP jointly observed the solar wind for the first time in June 2020, capturing data from very different solar wind streams, calm and Alfv\'enic wind as well as many dynamic structures. Aims. The aim here is to understand the origin and characteristics of the highly dynamic solar wind observed by the two probes, in particular in the vicinity of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). Methods. We analyse the plasma data obtained by PSP and Solar Orbiter in situ during the month of June 2020. We use the Alfv\'en-wave turbulence MHD solar wind model WindPredict-AW, and perform two 3D simulations based on ADAPT solar magnetograms for this period. Results. We show that the dynamic regions measured by both spacecraft are pervaded with flux ropes close to the HCS. These flux ropes are also present in the simulations, forming at the tip of helmet streamers, i.e. at the base of the heliospheric current sheet. The formation mechanism involves a pressure driven instability followed by a fast tearing reconnection process, consistent with the picture of R\'eville et al. (2020a). The goal of our study is to detect and characterize the electromagnetic waves that can modify the electron distribution functions, with a special attention to whistler waves. We analyse in details the electric and magnetic field fluctuations observed by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft during its first orbit around the Sun between 0.5 and 1 AU. Using data of the Search Coil Magnetometer and electric antenna, both parts of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrumental suite, we detect the electromagnetic waves with frequencies above 3 Hz and determine the statistical distribution of their amplitudes, frequencies, polarization and k-vector as a function of distance. We also discuss relevant instrumental issues regarding the phase between the electric and magnetic measurements and the effective length of the electric antenna. An overwhelming majority of the observed waves are right hand circularly polarized in the solar wind frame and identified as outward propagating and quasi parallel whistler waves. Their occurrence rate increases by a least a factor two from 1 AU to 0.5 AU. These results are consistent with the regulation of the heat flux by the whistler heat flux instability. Near 0.5 AU, whistler waves are found to be more field-aligned and to have smaller normalized frequency ($f/f_{ce}$), larger amplitude, and larger bandwidth than at 1 AU., Comment: accepted in A&A

Context. Spacecraft observations early revealed frequent multiple proton populations in the solar wind. Decades of research on their origin have focused on processes such as magnetic reconnection in the low corona and wave-particle interactions in the corona and locally in the solar wind.Aims.This study aims to highlight that multiple proton populations and beams are also produced by magnetic reconnection occurring locally in the solar wind. Methods. We use high resolution Solar Orbiter proton velocity distribution function measurements, complemented by electron and magnetic field data, to analyze the association of multiple proton populations and beams with magnetic reconnection during a period of slow Alfv\'enic solar wind on 16 July 2020. Results. At least 6 reconnecting current sheets with associated multiple proton populations and beams, including a case of magnetic reconnection at a switchback boundary, are found during this day. This represents 2% of the measured distribution functions. We discuss how this proportion may be underestimated, and how it may depend on solar wind type and distance from the Sun. Conclusions. Although suggesting a likely small contribution, but which remains to be quantitatively assessed, Solar Orbiter observations show that magnetic reconnection must be considered as one of the mechanisms that produce multiple proton populations and beams locally in the solar wind.

A high level of physical detail in a molecular model improves its ability to perform high accuracy simulations, but can also significantly affect its complexity and computational cost. In some situations, it is worthwhile to add additional complexity to a model to capture properties of interest; in others, additional complexity is unnecessary and can make simulations computationally infeasible. In this work we demonstrate the use of Bayes factors for molecular model selection, using Monte Carlo sampling techniques to evaluate the evidence for different levels of complexity in the two-centered Lennard-Jones + quadrupole (2CLJQ) fluid model. Examining three levels of nested model complexity, we demonstrate that the use of variable quadrupole and bond length parameters in this model framework is justified only sometimes. We also explore the effect of the Bayesian prior distribution on the Bayes factors, as well as ways to propose meaningful prior distributions. This Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) process is enabled by the use of analytical surrogate models that accurately approximate the physical properties of interest. Context. The Sun's complex corona is the source of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field. While the large scale morphology is well understood, the impact of variations in coronal properties on the scale of a few degrees on properties of the interplanetary medium is not known. Solar Orbiter, carrying both remote sensing and in situ instruments into the inner solar system, is intended to make these connections better than ever before. Aims. We combine remote sensing and in situ measurements from Solar Orbiter's first perihelion at 0.5 AU to study the fine scale structure of the solar wind from the equatorward edge of a polar coronal hole with the aim of identifying characteristics of the corona which can explain the in situ variations. Methods. We use in situ measurements of the magnetic field, density and solar wind speed to identify structures on scales of hours at the spacecraft. Using Potential Field Source Surface mapping we estimate the source locations of the measured solar wind as a function of time and use EUI images to characterise these solar sources. Results. We identify small scale stream interactions in the solar wind with compressed magnetic field and density along with speed variations which are associated with corrugations in the edge of the coronal hole on scales of several degrees, demonstrating that fine scale coronal structure can directly influence solar wind properties and drive variations within individual streams. Conclusions. This early analysis already demonstrates the power of Solar Orbiter's combined remote sensing and in situ payload and shows that with future, closer perihelia it will be possible dramatically to improve our knowledge of the coronal sources of fine scale solar wind structure, which is important both for understanding the phenomena driving the solar wind and predicting its impacts at the Earth and elsewhere., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Solar Orbiter was launched on February 10, 2020 with the purpose of investigating solar and heliospheric physics using a payload of instruments designed for both remote and in-situ sensing. Similar to the recently launched Parker Solar Probe, and unlike earlier missions, Solar Orbiter carries instruments designed to measure the low frequency DC electric fields. In this paper we assess the quality of the low-frequency DC electric field measured by the Radio and Plasma Waves instrument (RPW) on Solar Orbiter. In particular we investigate the possibility of using Solar Orbiter's DC electric and magnetic field data to estimate the solar wind speed. We use deHoffmann-Teller (HT) analysis based on measurements of the electric and magnetic fields to find the velocity of solar wind current sheets which minimizes a single component of the electric field. By comparing the HT velocity to proton velocity measured by the Proton and Alpha particle Sensor (PAS) we develop a simple model for the effective antenna length, $L_\text{eff}$ of the E-field probes. We then use the HT method to estimate the speed of the solar wind. Using the HT method, we find that the observed variations in $E_y$ are often in excellent agreement with the variations in the magnetic field. The magnitude of $E_y$, however, is uncertain due to the fact that the $L_\text{eff}$ depends on the plasma environment. We derive an empirical model relating $L_\text{eff}$ to the Debye length, which we can use to improve the estimate of $E_y$ and consequently the estimated solar wind speed. The low frequency electric field provided by RPW is of high quality. Electric field measurements of the Time Domain Sampler (TDS) receiver, part of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrument on board Solar Orbiter, often exhibit very intense broadband wave emissions at frequencies below 20~kHz in the spacecraft frame. In this paper, we present a year-long study of electrostatic fluctuations observed in the solar wind at an interval of heliocentric distances from 0.5 to 1~AU. The RPW/TDS observations provide a nearly continuous data set for a statistical study of intense waves below the local plasma frequency. The on-board and continuously collected and processed properties of waveform snapshots allow for the mapping plasma waves at frequencies between 200~Hz and 20~kHz. We used the triggered waveform snapshots and a Doppler-shifted solution of the dispersion relation for wave mode identification in order to carry out a detailed spectral and polarization analysis. Electrostatic ion-acoustic waves are the common wave emissions observed between the local electron and proton plasma frequency in the soler wind. The occurrence rate of ion-acoustic waves peaks around perihelion at distances of 0.5~AU and decreases with increasing distances, with only a few waves detected per day at 0.9~AU. Waves are more likely to be observed when the local proton moments and magnetic field are highly variable. A more detailed analysis of more than 10000 triggered waveform snapshots shows the mean wave frequency at about 3 kHz and wave amplitude about 2.5 mV/m. The wave amplitude varies as 1/R^(1.38) with the heliocentric distance. The relative phase distribution between two components of the E-field shows a mostly linear wave polarization. Electric field fluctuations are closely aligned with the directions of the ambient field lines. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a nonlinear shear-driven instability that develops at the interface between shear flows in plasmas. KHI has been inferred in various astrophysical plasmas and has been observed in situ at the magnetospheric boundaries of solar-system planets and through remote sensing at the boundaries of coronal mass ejections. While it was hypothesized to play an important role in the mixing of plasmas and in triggering solar wind fluctuations, its direct and unambiguous observation in the solar wind was still lacking. We report in-situ observations of ongoing KHI in the solar wind using Solar Orbiter during its cruise phase. The KHI is found in a shear layer in the slow solar wind in the close vicinity of the Heliospheric Current Sheet, with properties satisfying linear theory for its development. An analysis is performed to derive the local configuration of the KHI. A 2-D MHD simulation is also set up with empirical values to test the stability of the shear layer. In addition, magnetic spectra of the KHI event are analyzed. We find that the observed conditions satisfy the KHI onset criterion from the linear theory analysis, and its development is further confirmed by the simulation. The current sheet geometry analyses are found to be consistent with KHI development. Additionally, we report observations of an ion jet consistent with magnetic reconnection at a compressed current sheet within the KHI interval. The KHI is found to excite magnetic and velocity fluctuations with power-law scalings that approximately follow $k^{-5/3}$ and $k^{-2.8}$ in the inertial and dissipation ranges, respectively. These observations provide robust evidence of KHI development in the solar wind. This sheds new light on the process of shear-driven turbulence as mediated by the KHI with implications for the driving of solar wind fluctuations.

The recent launches of Parker Solar Probe (PSP), Solar Orbiter (SO) and BepiColombo, along with several older spacecraft, have provided the opportunity to study the solar wind at multiple latitudes and distances from the Sun simultaneously. We take advantage of this unique spacecraft constellation, along with low solar activity across two solar rotations between May and July 2020, to investigate how the solar wind structure, including the Heliospheric Current Sheet (HCS), varies with latitude. We visualise the sector structure of the inner heliosphere by ballistically mapping the polarity and solar wind speed from several spacecraft onto the Sun's source surface. We then assess the HCS morphology and orientation with the in situ data and compare with a predicted HCS shape. We resolve ripples in the HCS on scales of a few degrees in longitude and latitude, finding that the local orientation of sector boundaries were broadly consistent with the shape of the HCS but were steepened with respect to a modelled HCS at the Sun. We investigate how several CIRs varied with latitude, finding evidence for the compression region affecting slow solar wind outside the latitude extent of the faster stream. We also identified several transient structures associated with HCS crossings, and speculate that one such transient may have disrupted the local HCS orientation up to five days after its passage. We have shown that the solar wind structure varies significantly with latitude, with this constellation providing context for solar wind measurements that would not be possible with a single spacecraft. These measurements provide an accurate representation of the solar wind within $\pm 10^{\circ}$ latitude, which could be used as a more rigorous constraint on solar wind models and space weather predictions. Solar wind models predict that the mass flux carried away from the Sun in the solar wind should be extremely sensitive to the temperature in the corona, where the solar wind is accelerated. We perform a direct test of this prediction in coronal holes and active regions, using a combination of in-situ and remote sensing observations. For coronal holes, a 50% increase in temperature from 0.8 MK to 1.2 MK is associated with a tripling of the coronal mass flux. At temperatures over 2 MK, within active regions, this trend is maintained, with a four-fold increase in temperature corresponding to a 200-fold increase in coronal mass flux., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Solar Orbiter is the first space mission observing the solar plasma both in situ and remotely, from a close distance, in and out of the ecliptic. The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun produces and controls the heliosphere, filling the Solar System and driving the planetary environments. With six remote-sensing and four in-situ instrument suites, the coordination and planning of the operations are essential to address the following four top-level science questions: (1) What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate? (2) How do solar transients drive heliospheric variability? (3) How do solar eruptions produce energetic particle radiation that fills the heliosphere? (4) How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? Maximising the mission's science return requires considering the characteristics of each orbit, including the relative position of the spacecraft to Earth (affecting downlink rates), trajectory events (such as gravitational assist manoeuvres), and the phase of the solar activity cycle. Furthermore, since each orbit's science telemetry will be downloaded over the course of the following orbit, science operations must be planned at mission level, rather than at the level of individual orbits. It is important to explore the way in which those science questions are translated into an actual plan of observations that fits into the mission, thus ensuring that no opportunities are missed. First, the overarching goals are broken down into specific, answerable questions along with the required observations and the so-called Science Activity Plan (SAP) is developed to achieve this. Solar Orbiter, the first mission of ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme and a mission of international collaboration between ESA and NASA, will explore the Sun and heliosphere from close up and out of the ecliptic plane. It was launched on 10 February 2020 04:03 UTC from Cape Canaveral and aims to address key questions of solar and heliospheric physics pertaining to how the Sun creates and controls the Heliosphere, and why solar activity changes with time. To answer these, the mission carries six remote-sensing instruments to observe the Sun and the solar corona, and four in-situ instruments to measure the solar wind, energetic particles, and electromagnetic fields. In this paper, we describe the science objectives of the mission, and how these will be addressed by the joint observations of the instruments onboard. The paper first summarises the mission-level science objectives, followed by an overview of the spacecraft and payload. We report the observables and performance figures of each instrument, as well as the trajectory design. This is followed by a summary of the science operations concept. The paper concludes with a more detailed description of the science objectives. Solar Orbiter will combine in-situ measurements in the heliosphere with high-resolution remote-sensing observations of the Sun to address fundamental questions of solar and heliospheric physics. The performance of the Solar Orbiter payload meets the requirements derived from the mission's science objectives. As the solar wind propagates through the heliosphere, dynamical processes irreversibly erase the signatures of the near-Sun heating and acceleration processes. The elemental fractionation of the solar wind should not change during transit however, making it an ideal tracer of these processes. We aimed to verify directly if the solar wind elemental fractionation is reflective of the coronal source region fractionation, both within and across different solar wind source regions. A backmapping scheme was used to predict where solar wind measured by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) originated in the corona. The coronal composition measured by the Hinode Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) at the source regions was then compared with the in-situ solar wind composition. On hourly timescales there was no apparent correlation between coronal and solar wind composition. In contrast, the distribution of fractionation values within individual source regions was similar in both the corona and solar wind, but distributions between different sources have significant overlap. The matching distributions directly verifies that elemental composition is conserved as the plasma travels from the corona to the solar wind, further validating it as a tracer of heating and acceleration processes. The overlap of fractionation values between sources means it is not possible to identify solar wind source regions solely by comparing solar wind and coronal composition measurements, but a comparison can be used to verify consistency with predicted spacecraft-corona connections., Comment: Accepted version; 8 pages, 7 figures

Using measurements from the Cassini spacecraft in Saturn's magnetosphere, we propose a 3D physical picture of a corotating reconnection site, which can only be driven by an internally generated source. Our results demonstrate that the corotating magnetic reconnection can drive an expansion of the current sheet in Saturn's magnetosphere and, consequently, can produce Fermi acceleration of electrons. This reconnection site lasted for longer than one of Saturn's rotation period. The long-lasting and corotating natures of the magnetic reconnection site at Saturn suggest fundamentally different roles of magnetic reconnection in driving magnetospheric dynamics (e.g., the auroral precipitation) from the Earth. Our corotating reconnection picture could also potentially shed light on the fast rotating magnetized plasma environments in the solar system and beyond., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures
