BACKGROUND Choristoma is a rare, benign, congenital proliferative tumor, with osseous choristoma being the rarest. Although the tumor is benign, effective identification is needed for its diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report the diagnosis and successful surgical treatment of two patients with osseous choristoma. CASE SUMMARY Two patients, a young female and young male patient, were found to have a mass on the ocular surface. The tumor presented on the superior temporal bulbar conjunctiva in the first patient and on the upper eyelid in the second patient. Ultrasound biomicroscopy detected a strong echo with clear boundaries covering the lower echo, and computed tomography examination revealed calcification. Both patients underwent surgery, and histopathological evaluation of the mass showed osseous choristoma. They were treated by excision and subsequently cured. CONCLUSION Osseous choristomas are usually asymptomatic. Our patients were cured immediately after surgery, suggesting that surgical treatment is an effective strategy.

We report a case of a 40-year-old Japanese woman with a benign tongue tumor diagnosed as osseous choristoma of the tongue. Resection of the tongue tumor was performed under general anesthesia. The gross examination of the resected specimen showed a bone-like mass measuring 5 × 5 × 3 mm, surrounded by soft tissue. Based on the findings, a histopathological diagnosis of osseous choristoma was established. There was no evidence of tumor recurrence or distant metastasis during the 3-year follow-up.

Choristoma is described as the growth of normal tissue in an unusual location. Intraoral choristoma may be comprised of various tissue types such as cartilage, bone, gastric mucosa and, even glial tissue. Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign normal bony tissue in an abnormal location, commonly over the dorsum of the tongue though cases at maxillofacial region have been reported. This entity should be kept in mind because it can be confused with other tumor and tumor-like lesions of the tongue. We report a case of lingual osseous choristoma along with discussion regarding its epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment.

Osseous choristoma is an uncommon benign lesion characterized by the presence of ectopic mature bone within soft tissue. In most cases, these lesions occur on the dorsum of the tongue in patients in their third and fourth decades of life. This article describes a case of lingual osseous choristoma in a pediatric patient. An eleven-year-old girl with a lingual mass was referred to our hospital from a dental clinic. Total excisional biopsy and histological examination were performed, and osseous choristoma was diagnosed. The postoperative course was uneventful with no signs of recurrence during the 12 months after surgery. Moreover, a literature review focusing on pediatric cases with lingual osseous choristoma was performed to know the etiology, clinicopathological characteristics, and course of treatment of the lesion.

On palpation the lesion was stony hard. Mobility of the tongue was normal.A wide local excision was done under general anesthesia and the histopathology report was a Osseous choristoma. She came for follow up a month after the procedure and there was no evidence of any recurrence.Objective: To report a rare case of Osseous choristoma of the tongueMethod: - Result: -Conclusion: Lingual Osseous choristoma is a rare benign oral lesion. The management is complete wide local excision.

Osteomas are rare benign bony tumors located in the tongue area. In most cases, patients presenting with a lingual osteoma are asymptomatic but may complain of the sensation of having a foreign body. Fewer than 100 cases of lingual osteoma have been reported worldwide. Here, we present 2 cases of tongue base osteoma that were treated with excision under a laryngoscope.

INTRODUCTION Osseous choristomas of the tongue are rare, benign tumor-like lesions composed of abnormally placed bone and cartilage tissue. The few publications to date concerning this condition have been primarily limited to case reports. This systematic review aimed to clarify the clinical presentations of osseous choristomas and how to delineate them from other oral pathologies. METHODS The authors utilized PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library reference databases from 1971 to mid-2020. Search terms were “osseous choristoma,” “oral cavity,” and “lingual.” Preferred Reporting Systems for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were used to aggregate relevant data from each study. The authors specifically collected data regarding patient demographics, clinical findings, symptoms, treatments, and subsequent outcomes relating to lingual osseous choristomas. RESULTS A total of 35 (14.6% of total identified) publications that met inclusion criteria were identified concerning a total of 69 lingual osseous choristoma cases. Results were compiled focusing on sex and age, presenting symptoms, histology, appearance of the lesion base being most commonly pedunculated (e.g., stalk or stem-like), the lesion’s location on the tongue, and subsequent treatments. Osseous choristomas had a higher rate of occurrence in females, 48 (70%) and those under the age of 40. Symptomatic presentations occurred in 38 (55%) patients, with the most common presenting symptoms being gagging/globus (i.e., lump or foreign body) sensation (n = 47, 68%) and dysphagia (n = 20, 29%). Identified masses were pedunculated in 33 (80%) of cases and eight (20%) were identified as sessile (i.e., immobile). A total of 41 (59%) lesions were more commonly located in the posterior one third of the tongue compared to 28 (41%) in the anterior two thirds of the tongue. Of those 49 (71%) cases requiring surgical mass excisions, recurrence was reported in 0% of cases. CONCLUSIONS Although osseous choristomas are benign processes that rarely arise from the tongue, providers should carefully inspect patients with a gagging/globus sensation and pedunculated mass toward the back of the tongue. Surgical resection remains the best treatment to prevent recurrence.

Lingual osseous choristoma is a rare benign tumor consisting of normal matured bone tissue. It was first reported in 1913, and less than 100 cases of lingual osseous choristomas, mainly in their twenties and thirties, have been reported in the English literature until now. Here, we report an additional case of lingual osseous choristoma, in an elderly patient, that was incidentally removed by coughing and cured without additional interventions. An 89-year-old male patient was referred to our department for an evaluation of chronic cough. When we examined his oral cavity and pharynx, he expectorated a 10 -mm mass which was histologically diagnosed as an osseous choristoma. We confirmed the well-defined, rounded, high-density mass with a tiny pedicle on the base of the tongue in previous cervical spine CT images. No signs of recurrence were found during the 15-month follow-up examination. Our case serves as a reminder of this rare entity in the diagnosis of tongue masses of the elderly.

Soft tissue radiopacities of head and neck region are intriguing to the oral and maxillofacial radiologist. Osseous choristoma is seldom included in the list of probable differential diagnosis, since its occurrence in the region is a rare phenomenon. Here a case report of osseous choristoma in the submental region of a young male patient has been documanted. This case report highlights the nuances in the radiological interpretation of such radiopaque lesions.

Osseous choristoma is a rare, benign lesion of the oral cavity. This report presents a case of osseous choristoma in the submental region of a 30-year-old female subject. Her chief complaint was a painless swelling in the submental region. Panoramic radiography showed a well-defined, round, radiopaque lesion near the inferior border of the left mental region. The lesion was diagnosed as an osseous choristoma based on the histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. This paper is an attempt to bring forward a unique occurrence of osseous choristoma, which would further help the medical fraternity in improvising their knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment of this entity.

We present a case of a 15-year-old girl with an epibulbar osseous choristoma. The patient presented with a 3×3 mm, whitish, firm subconjunctival mass in the superotemporal quadrant of her right eye with vascularization. She underwent excision biopsy of the mass under topical anesthesia. The pathologic sections were consistent with a well-circumscribed osseous tissue without atypia. Osseous choristoma is one of the rare types of ocular choristoma to be considered in the differential diagnosis of pediatric epibulbar tumors.

Purpose To present the case of a 12-year-old female with an epibulbar osseous choristoma. Observations The patient presented with right-sided conjunctival mass, which caused her discomfort. Slit lamp examination revealed a 5×5-mm, firm nodule in the superotemporal quadrant of the bulbar conjunctiva. The nodule had feeder vessels, adhered firmly to the sclera, and lacked signs of malignancy. The patient underwent excisional biopsy under general anesthesia. During this procedure, great care was taken to avoid perforation of the globe. The pathologic sections were significant for well-circumscribed osseous tissue without atypia. Conclusions and importance We describe diagnosis and successful surgical management of osseous choristoma the rarest subtype of ocular choristoma. With only 65 cases reported since mid-19th century, the condition remains poorly described. This report provides additional information on diagnosis and treatment of this rare condition.

An osseous choristoma is a benign tumor consisting of regular bone tissue in an irregular localization. Choristomas in the head and neck region are rare. Most frequently, they are found in the region of the tongue or oral mucosa. There are also very few reports on osseous choristomas in the submandibular region. We present the case of a woman with a large, caudal osseous choristoma within the lateral cervical triangle. Literature review is given about all of the reported cases in the region of the neck. The pathogenesis is yet unexplained. Our case supports the theory that the development of an osseous choristoma is a reaction to a former trauma. Cervical osseous choristomas are seldom, but they represent an important differential diagnosis when dealing with a cervical tumor.

Materials and methods A retrospective cohort study of cases with tissue diagnosis of epibulbar choristoma in 2 centers presenting during the period: 2000–2016 with focus on cases of complex and osseous choristoma. Demographic and clinical data were collected by the resident from medical records. The histopathological slides were reviewed by 2 pathologists and cases of complex and osseous choristoma were analyzed by biostatical staff. Results 120 epibulbar choristomas were identified. 13/120 patients (10.8%) with complex choristoma and 2/120 patients (1.7%) with osseous choristoma. 15 cases were further analyzed: 7 were males and 8 were females. Mean age at presentation was 7.6 year. Commonest location was temporal in 66.6%. The presence of smooth muscle component was associated with a larger size choristoma (p = 0.042). 73.3% had other ophthalmic manifestations (mostly eyelid anomalies) while 9 systemic associations (mostly Goldenhar's syndrome) were found in 8/13 cases of complex choristoma. Conclusion Epibulbar complex and osseous choristomas are rare. Histopathologically, the presence of smooth muscle significantly correlates with the lesion size. Complex choristoma is more likely to be associated with systemic manifestations. Further genetic studies for this condition are recommended., Highlights • Choristomas are congenital tumors that may affect the epibulbar area. • They arise from ectopic pluripotent cells differentiating into simple or complex choristoma. • We present our cases to highlight interesting ophthalmic and/or systemic associations. • This might open the door for future molecular genetic testing. • Significant association is found between smooth muscle component and larger size choristoma.

An osseous choristoma is a rare benign lesion consisting of normal bone tissue; it is seen in abnormal locations. It is most often seen in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue in the head. Its etiopatogenesis is controversial, and till date, less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature. Although a lingual osseous choristoma is asymptomatic, in some patients, symptoms such as swelling sensation in the throat, globus pharyngeus, dysphagia, retching, nausea, and sore throat have been reported. In this article, a 41-year-old female patient admitted to our clinic with throat pain and globus pharyngeus who underwent an excision from the region of radix lingua and the result of histopathological examination was reported as “osseous choristoma” was presented and related literature is reviewed.

Osseous lesions of the tongue, also referred to as osseous choristomas, are benign growths of bony tissue. These lesions are not true neoplasms but rather represent growth of normal tissue at an abnormal location. Clinically, they appear as exophytic masses of the tongue, and they are treated by surgical excision. Lingual osseous choristomas are rare entities, with only 71 reported cases in the literature. We present the case of a lingual osseous choristoma of the tongue base in a 21-year-old female. Of the cases of lingual osseous choristoma reported in the literature, ours is only the fifth case to involve this location.

Background Osseous choristoma is a very rare, benign lesion in the maxillofacial region. It appears as a benign mass of normally matured bony tissue covered by the normal epithelium of the tongue. It is usually seen in front of the foramen cecum of the tongue. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice with an excellent prognosis and there have been very few cases of recurrence. Case presentation Here we present two cases of osseous choristoma on the dorsum of the tongue. Case 1 was a 15-year-old Japanese girl who presented with a painless but gradually growing swelling on the dorsum of her tongue approximately 1 year before her admission. Case 2 was a 21-year-old Japanese woman with a complaint of pain in the lower left, posterior side of her mouth. Histological findings showed that both lesions were composed of well-organized, mature, compact bone beneath the oral mucosal membrane. Subsequent to simple surgical excision, no recurrence of the lesions was observed after the follow-up period. Previous literatures have proposed both malformation and trauma hypotheses as the etiopathologies of osseous choristoma. However, the histopathological findings of the two cases in the present study do not support the trauma hypothesis. Conclusions Although osseous choristoma is clinically a benign condition, the underlying histopathological processes are important. The outcome of aberrant formation of calcified tissue in the vicinity of vital structures such as nerves and blood vessels may be of clinical significance.

This case report is the third ever reported of a recurrent intraoral osseous choristoma. The lesion had manifested twice in the left mandibular buccal vestibule of a 63-year-old Caucasian female. The patient was treated with wide local excision on both occasions. We believe that the lesions may have arisen as a result of previous trauma, although the exact etiology of the lesions is unknown. Interestingly, the recurrent lesion contained satellite nodules of bone, which suggests that the osseous choristoma may recur yet again.

Summary Choristomas are defined as proliferations of histologically normal tissue located in an abnormal position. Osseous choristomas of oral soft tissue are rare lesions, especially in children, occurring most frequently in the tongue, and less commonly in other sites such as buccal mucosa, palate and alveolar mucosa. It has been suggested that osseous choristomas have developmental or traumatic origins. Definite diagnosis can only be determined after histologic examination, whereupon the treatment of choice is surgical excision. Here we present, what is to our knowledge, a second case of buccal osseous choristoma in a pediatric patient, along with a brief review of the current, pertinent literature.

Histologically, nodule was composed of mature lamellated bone with a surrounding connective tissue.

Osseous choristoma is a normal bone tissue in an ectopic position. In the oral region lingual localization occurs more frequently and the mass is generally localized on the dorsum of the tongue. Definitive diagnosis is obtained only after histopathologic examination. The etiology remains already debatable. The treatment of choice is surgical excision. In this paper we present a case of tongue osseous choristoma and a review of the literature.

The topic of this case report is a rare subconjuctival osseous choristoma that corresponded to the left lateral sunconjunctiva and canthus. A 20-year-old man was asymptomatic when he arrived for the examination. His full ophthalmic examination was normal. Orbital computerized tomography was concordant with osseous lesion. Osseous choristomas are the rarest forms of ocular choristomas, they are usually being defined as sporadic, and they are found at the superior temporal region of the episclera. In our case, choristoma was in the lateral canthus of the left eye. We had administered surgical excision by reason of the patient’s cosmetic requirement. We had noted that the lesion was adherent to conjunctiva but not to the sclera and the muscles. After surgical treatment, we saw mature heterotrophic osseous tissue in subconjunctival area and Haversian canals in compact bone tissue.
