The Stock Island tree snail, Orthalicus reses reses, went extinct in its native range in the Florida Keys in 1992. Fortunately, O. r. reses has been introduced elsewhere and further reintroductions are currently planned. Before these reintroductions are implemented, it is important to try and determine which factors were most likely to have caused the decline and extinction. While habitat destruction was prob-ably the ultimate reason why there were so few tree snails, it is likely that an interaction of habitat frag-mentation and the invasion of an exotic predator caused the final decline that lead to the extinction in 1992. We examined the last 93 O. r. reses shells to infer cause of death. In addition, using surrogate Florida tree snails, Liguus fasciatus, we conducted experiments on two previously unstudied causes of mortality: predation by red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, and mortality from falls caused by wind. A remarkable new species of pulmonate snail was recently collected in a small Atlantic Rainforest fragment near the city of Canavieiras, state of Bahia, Brazil, an area known for a high diversity of land snails. It is described herein as Leiostracus fetidus sp. nov. and can be easily identified by its color pattern of irregular brown to black axial stripes on a white to yellow background, a reddish axial band “separating” the white peristome from the rest of the shell and a broad brown spiral band surrounding the umbilical region. Other diagnostic features include a relatively small size, a proto columellar fold and two very weak folds delimiting the basal region of the aperture. This discovery is a reminder of how little this fauna is known and also an alarm for proper conservation of these forest fragments. KEYWORDS. An alphabetical list of 352 type lots of molluscs housed in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo is presented following the standards of the previous list by Dornellas & Simone (2011), with a few adjustments. Important items listed herein include types of species described after the previous compilation, as well as recently acquired paratypes of Asian Pomatiopsidae and Diplommatinidae (Gastropoda) taxa described by Rolf A.M. Brandt (1960s), P. Temcharoen (1970s) and W.J.M. Maassen (2000s), all of which belonged to the private collection of Jens Hemmen, Wiesbaden, Germany. Relevant items also include types of recently described species coming from the French-Brazilian Marion Dufresne MD55 expedition, and other types deposited by researchers from Brazil and the world. A list of authors and photographs of specimens are also provided.

Two new sibling species are described, Bostryx multiconspectus spec. nov and B. primigenius spec. nov., one of which is carinate. From the carinate taxa known in the Orthalicidae, 16 are occurring at localities in the Andes from northern Peru to northwestern Argentina. They belong to three genera, Bostryx, Neopetraeus and Scutalus. It is hypothesized that carination originated independently in these lineages.

A faunal overview is presented of the molluscan families Amphibulimidae, Megaspiridae, Odontostomidae, Orthalicidae, Simpulopsidae in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. These Central Andean countries are known for their biodiverse malacofauna, of which the superfamily Orthalicoidea takes relatively a large share. In this paper the five families containing 103 (sub)species, for which systematic information (original publication, type locality, type depository, summarizing literature) and distributional records are presented. All species are illustrated by photographs of the type material or, if this could not be located, by a reproduction of the original figure. The following new taxon is introduced: Thaumastus (Thaumastus) sumaqwayqu sp. n. Junior subjective synonyms are established for: Plekocheilus (Sparnotion) Pilsbry, 1944 = Plekocheilus (Eudolichotis) Pilsbry, 1896; Scholvienia (Thomsenia) Strebel, 1910 = Scholvienia Strebel, 1910; Sultana (Trachyorthalicus) Strebel, 1909 = Sultana (Metorthalicus) Pilsbry, 1899; Plekocheilus (Eurytus) conspicuus Pilsbry, 1932 = Thaumastus (Thaumastus) hartwegi (Pfeiffer in Philippi, 1846); Zebra gruneri Strebel, 1909 = Orthalicus maracaibensis (Pfeiffer, 1856); Scholvienia jaspidea minor Strebel, 1910 = Scholvienia alutacea (Reeve, 1850); Bulimus bifasciatus unicolor Philippi, 1869 = Scholvienia brephoides (d'Orbigny, 1835). A new status is given to Plekocheilus mcgintyi 'Pilsbry' H.B. Baker, 1963 (subspecies of Bulinus piperitus Sowerby I, 1837); Strophocheilus superstriatus var. prodeflexus Pilsbry, 1895 (subspecies of Bulinus piperitus Sowerby I, 1837); Thaumastus (Quechua) salteri maximus Weyrauch, 1967 (subspecies of Thaumastus (Quechua) olmosensis Zilch, 1954); Pseudoglandina agitata Weyrauch, 1967 (nomen inquirendum). New combinations are: Clathrorthalicus corydon (Crosse, 1869), and Cyclodontina chuquisacana (Marshall, 1930). Lectotypes are now designated for Bulimus incisus Hupé, 1857 and Bulinus piperitus Sowerby I, 1837.

We have incorporated an additional 56 species of land snails and slugs in our ribosomal (r) RNA molecular phylogeny. The new taxa include representatives of several important groups. The molecular tree now includes 160 species of stylommatophoran land snails and slugs in 144 genera in 61 families. In the rDNA tree, the Stylommatophora are principally divided into an ‘achatinoid’ and a ‘non-achatinoid’ clade. Within these clades, several major land snail groups, including the Orthurethra, Elasmognatha, Limacoidea, and Helicoidea, are supported. Overall, the rDNA molecular phylogeny has remained stable following the incorporation of the additional taxa, with these additions having little impact on the major evolutionary patterns in the tree. Taxonomic coverage of the Orthurethra, Orthalicidae, Camaenidae, and Bradybaenidae is increased significantly. The camaenids and bradybaenids form a complex, and both appear to be paraphyletic. Several families of uncertain affinity, such as the Sagdidae and Thyrophorellidae, are included for the first time. The Sagdidae are shown to belong to the Helicoidea, and the Thyrophorellidae to the Achatinoidea. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 87, 593–610.

Plagiodontes patagonicus (d'Orbigny, 1835) is a quite variable species endemic to southern Buenos Aires province (Argentina). Its taxonomic characterization did not include any quantitative analysis of variability for an accurate discrimination, and the extremes of its variation were described as different subspecies or species. In this paper, shell measurements and angles, and quantitative data on the terminal male genitalia were studied by Principal Component Analysis and Varimax multivariate analysis. Typical Plagiodontes patagonicus and the largest form known as P. patagonicus magnus Hylton-Scott, 1951 showed an almost continuous pattern of shell variation, which is positively correlated with the altitude gradient over their geographical range, which in turn is correlated with a rainfall gradient, i.e. they constitute a size-form cline that does not allow objective delimitation of different morphospecies. Data from the genital system were also arranged as a geographical gradient within the P. patagonicus patagonicus-P. patagonicus magnus continuum. The variability of protoconch sculpture and apertural teeth also indicate recognition of them as a single taxon. Fil: Cazzaniga, Néstor Jorge. Universidad Nacional del Sur. The specific epithet is derived from Latin prolatus, meaning extended, elongated, an allusion to the elongation of the shell of compared with other congener species. Systematic remarks. The generic attribution to Anctus prolatus is based on the dark-brown protoconch, the axial sparse brown bands, the elliptical shape and the antero-posteriorly elongated peristome. The genus has only 3 species (Breure, 1974; Simone, 2006). Anctus prolatus differs from A. angiostomus (Wagner, 1827), from Bahia, in lacking a developed palatalis tooth in middle region of the outer lip, by the narrower umbilicus and by the slender outline (width/length ratio ~ 39 %, against ~ 46 % of A. angiostomus). It differs from A. laminiferus (Ancey, 1888), also from Bahia, in having a much narrower peristome, in having a wider umbilicus, and a narrower outline (width/ length ratio of A. laminiferus is ~ 47). It differs from A. surgillatus (Pfeiffer, 1857), from Bolivia, in having more elongated aperture (46 % of shell length, against ~ 37 of A. surgillatus), and much narrower peristome (width/length ratio ~ 25 % against 48 % of A. surgillatus). The elongation of the aperture of most Anctus species is for fixing and enchasing the shell to dry branches of plants (Simone, 1998). This is a behavior that can be extrapolated to A. prolatus. Only known from type locality. Habitat. Caatinga semi-dry environment; collected inside caves. Material examined. Types. Non-type material from type locality MZSP: 112347, 10 shells, 112356, 10 shells, 112357, 9 shells, 112367, 4 shells, 112368, 7 shells, 112373, 7 shells, 112399, 15 shells, 112415, 25 shells, 112420, 15 shells, 112432, 40 shells, 112437, 20 shells, 112442, 18 shells. Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the father of junior author, Gilberto Casati, who provided financial support and encouragement from his academic affairs. Systematic remarks. The main character of the genus Rhinus is the hairy periostracum, a character that cannot be seen in the examined material, composed of mostly long dead shells. However, the resemblance of R. gilbertus with several species of this genus suggests the generic attribute. Another character suggestive of the genus is the striated protoconch (Figs. 23, 29). Only few of the Rhinus that have elongated shell; most has a more globose shape. The elongated-shaped Rhinus (Simone, 2006), R. gilbertus resembles R. constrictus (Pfeiffer, 1841), from NE Brazil, differing in being more slender (width/length ratio of ~ 40 %, against ~ 62 % of that species); it also resembles R. evelinae Leme, 1986, from São Paulo, and R. obeliscus Haas, 1936, from Santa Catarina. It differs in having a slightly more rounded outline, as that two species are still more elongated (ratio of both species ~ 35 %), and two fewer whorls. R. gilbertus is the most elongated Rhinus from the NE Brazil, as elongated shape is more common in SE Brazilian species. A young specimen is shown in Fig. 29, displaying a different shape., Published as part of Simone, Luiz Ricardo L. & Casati, Rafael, 2013, New land mollusk fauna from Serra da Capivara, Piauí, Brazil, with a new genus and five new species (Gastropoda: Orthalicoidea, Streptaxidae, Subulinidae), pp. 145-158 in Zootaxa 3683 (2) on pages 153-154, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3683.2.4, http://zenodo.org/record/218653, {"references":["Simone, L. Sculpture uniform series of axial, slightly prosocline, narrow ribs, from suture to suture, ~ 30 in penultimate whorl; interspaces between ribs ~ 5 times their width. Sculpture absent in inferior half of body whorl in young specimens (Fig. 21), with low carina in periphery. Body whorl varying from equal (Figs. 19, 20) to ~ 10 % narrower (Figs. 16–18) than two preceding whorls. Three spiral wide grooves corresponding to palatal tooth in ¼ whorl preceding peristome (Figs. 17, 18). Peristome entirely deflected outwards, expanding ~ 20 % width of preceding whorl; aperture slightly prosocline, ~ 10 ° related to longitudinal shell axis. Aperture oval, occupying ~ 20 % of shell length and ~ 70–76 % of width (Figs. 16, 19, 20); greatly occluded by series of blunt and tall teeth (Figs. 16, 19, 20), teeth fold-like, disposed rather perpendicularly to peristome; as follows: 2 teeth on inner lip, located somewhat equidistant from each other on inner lip, columellaris (inferior) tooth ~ 8 times longer than wide, almost straight, edge broader than base, disposed obliquely (distal end more anterior than posterior end), parietalis (superior) tooth about as long as inferior tooth, but slightly thinner and more perpendicularly organized; four palatal tooth, equidistantly located on outer lip, all them ~ 4 times longer than wide, edges slightly broader than base, palatalis superior (second tooth) with ~double height than remaining teeth; basalis tooth as smallest. Callus thick but planar, simple, widely attached to penultimate whorl (Figs. 16, 19); fecal and urinary furrows narrow and shallow, but clearly visible in both sides of callus (Fig. 16). Umbilicus wanting. Measurements (in mm): Holotype (Figs. 16–18): 19.2 by 5.9; paratypes MZSP 111845 # 1 (Fig. 19): 20.4 by 5.8; # 2 (Fig. 20): 17.0 by 5.5. Distribution. Only known from type locality. Habitat. Caatinga semi-dry environment; collected inside caves. Material examined. Types. Non-type material from type locality MZSP: 112348, 10 shells, 112352, 12 shells, 112359, 11 shells, 112336, 9 shells, 112370, 7 shells, 112374, 8 shells, 112401, 35 shells, 112414, 40 shells, 112417, 40 shells, 112430, 50 shells, 112434, 20 shells, 112441, 20 shells. Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the local of occurrence, the Serra da Capivara, being attributed in apposition. Systematic remarks. Cyclodontina capivara has resemblance to some congeneric species that possess welldeveloped axial sculpture, which are only a small part of the Cyclodontina species (Simone, 2006). It differs from C. cylindrica (Baker, 1913), from Ceará to Pernambuco, in having more developed teeth in peristome, mainly palatal ones, a more slender outline and axial ribs more spaced. It differs from C. gemellata (Ancey, 1901), from Goiás, in being much slender, in having a more pointed spire and by the aperture being much smaller. It differs from C. scabrella (Anthony & Dohn, 1882), from Paraíba, in having a slender outline, less regular axial ribs, and the aperture is narrower. Cyclodontina capivara also resembles Clessinia costata (Pfeiffer, 1848), from Minas Gerais, differing in having more developed teeth in peristome, more pointed spire and less-spaced axial ribs. There is no other species in such C. capivara can be confused. Young specimens of C. capivara are rare. They clearly show that the characteristic sculpture is restricted to the superior half of the teleoconch whorls (Fig. 21), and that the inferior half (exposed only in the body whorl) is smooth.

A sample of Pulmonata collected in Santa Maria da Vitória, interior of Bahia, Brazil, in Caatinga semi-arid environment, is studied taxonomically. From the five species, four are revealed as new, including a new genus. The new taxa are the Bulimulidae (1) Kora corallina gen. et sp. n. characterized by the elongated shell with aperture somewhat dislocated from the shell axis, and an oblique tooth in middle level of inner lip; (2) Spixia coltrorum, mainly characterized by an uneven spire, delicate sculpture and peristome with 4 equidistant teeth; (3) Anostoma tessa, mainly characterized by a broad spire and well-developed anal canal; and the Megalobulimidae (4) Megalobulimus amandus, mainly characterized by pointed protoconch sculptured by dense quantity of axial cords. Rhinus suturalis is the only previously known species, but its geographic distribution is expanded southwards to Bahia state. A discussion with respect to necessity for improving the study on the malacofauna from the interior region of the Brazilian Northeast and the importance for preservation of the Caatinga biome is also provided.

Plekocheilus (Eurytus) camaritagua spec. nov. (Figs 14 D, 18 AB) Diagnosis. Shell globose, with flat whorls and hardly to not impressed suture, that descends slightly in front. Color pattern with dark brown, oblique streaks, bordered with a narrow, yellowish shadow. Sculptured with a fine granulation arranged in spirals. Description. Shell 57 mm, 1.5 times longer than wide, imperforate, sides hardly convex, rather solid. Color pale yellowish-brown with darker lines of the same color along the growth striae, crossed by reddish-brown, oblique streaks, showing some zigzags especially on the upper part of the last whorl, and bordered by a narrow, yellowish shadow; upper whorls lighter, eroded. Surface not shining, upper whorls with growth striae, on the last whorls with spiral lines of dot-like granulation, especially visible on the dorsal side of the last whorl. Protoconch eroded. Whorls 3.9, very flat, the last whorl approx. 0.9 times total height, suture not or hardly impressed, slightly descending in front. Aperture ovate, somewhat ear-shaped, 1.8 times longer than wide, 0.72 times the total length; peristome thin and hardly reflexed, pinkish (faded). Columellar margin straight, entering the aperture with a weak fold, hardly dilated and somewhat receding. Parietal wall with a thin callus. Dimensions in mm: Holotype H 57, D 37.5, HA 41, WA 23.5, LW 52, 3.9 whorls. Type locality. Colombia, Amazonas, Corregimiento La Pedrera [1 20 S 69 35 W, 80 m], Resguardo Indgena de Camaritagua, towards El Francisco. Type material. Holotype (ICNB), J. Corts leg./ 2004. Remarks. Although the shell is somewhat worn, its characteristics separate it from all other Plekocheilus (Eurytus) species. It may be compared to P. (E.) fusitorsus (Oberwimmer, 1931) from which it differs by (1) having a shorter spire; (2) a less impressed suture; (3) a less expanded lip. It may also be compared to P. (E.) coloratus (Nyst, 1845) which, however, (1) has the whorls more convex; (2) has a larger angle of the attachment of the lip to the body whorl; (3) has the spire more pointed. Finally, this new species may be compared to P. (E.) tepuiensis Breure, 2009, from which it differs in (1) having a different, more brownish color, with the yellowish shadow pattern; (2) having a less pointed spire; (3) having a different height/number of whorls ratio. The only known (possibly subadult) shell, the holotype, was found in SE Colombian rainforest, where snail collecting for scientific purposes has been very limited. According to the label, indigenous people use the mucus of these snails for scrubbing their skin. The color pattern appears to be similar to both the yellow trait specimens of P. coloratus from Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and to P. fusitorsus (Oberwimmer, 1931) from Venezuelan Guayana. Etymology. This very distinctive species is named after the Camaritagua, indigenous people of the region where it was found. The epithet is used as a noun in apposition., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. H., 2011, The Amphibulimidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Orthalicoidea) from Colombia and adjacent areas, pp. 1-59 in Zootaxa 3054 on page 37, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.278895, {"references":["Nyst, H. Remarks. Breure (1978) located the type material, of which one specimen is figured here. The specimen from Pramo de Pisba is tentatively referred to this species. This locality forms part of the Cocuy area, which is known for its endemics (see also Breure 2008) and is phytogeographically related to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Cleef, pers. comm.). The single shell in the lot from Pramo de Pisba (RMNH) lacks the upper whorls (due to fracture) and shows traces of oblique chestnut-brown color streaks on a golden-brown ground color. Plekocheilus (Eurytus) subglandiformis (Mousson, 1873) (Figs 9 C, 10 LN) Bulimus subglandiformis Mousson 1873: 6. Type locality: Colombia, Bogot. Lectotype ZMUZ 511633 (Breure 1976). Plekocheilus subglandiformis (Mousson); Richardson 1995: 321 (references, synonymy); Neubert and Janssen 2004: 230, pl. 1 fig. 2; Simone, 2006: 150, fig. 506. Material. Antioquia, Sonsn, Wallis leg.: SMF 21603 (ex W. Kobelt); Frontina [Frontino] (ZMUZ 233 [sic = 511632, see remarks]) (Simone, 2006);?Cundinamarca, Bogota: ZMUZ 511633.?, U.S. of Colombia: USNM 316120 (ex Henderson Colln, ex Evezard Colln); Columbia: ZMUZ 511631 (not seen). Remarks. The specimen pictured by Neubert and Janssen (2004) does not show the characteristic marbled band below the suture, consisting of brown spots that fade into yellowish; these yellowish spots may continue in waving, axial bands. If the ZMUZ and SMF specimens originate from the same series, which Neubert and Janssen consider very probable, the specimens in SMF could be regarded as paralectotypes. However, it should be noted that their specimen is from Antigua [sic, most probably Antioquia], Sonsn, while Moussons specimen in ZMUZ is labelled with Bogota. Also, Breures (1976) statement of a unique specimen ZMUZ 511633 is in error, for two reasons: (1) we have a file of material at ZMUZ, listing three lots as P. subglandiformis (511631, Columbia; 511632, Frontina and 511633, Bogot [lectotype]); (2) Simone (2006: 150, fig. 506) shows two specimens from ZMUZ, the lectotype (cited in error as ZMUZ 233), and the specimen from Frontina (cited in error as ZMUZ 233). Mousson only mentions Bogot in his paper (Mousson 1873: 1), without giving further details on (other) localities in his description., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. Plekocheilus (Eurytus) piperitus (Sowerby I, 1837) (Figs 17 GJ) Bulimus piperitus Sowerby I 1837 (18321841): fig. 93. Type locality: [Peru, Dept. San Martn] Huallaga. Type material: not located. Richardson 1995: 318 (references). Material. Ecuador, Tungurahua, Rio Pastaza watershed, ex E. Doremus: DMNH 56470; Ecuador: USNM 316099 (ex Henderson Colln, ex Evezard Colln, as P. piperitus roseolabrum), USNM 532641 (ex Fulton, as Eurytus piperitus roseolabrum). Brazil, Amazonas, Igarap Anib [Remarks. This species is known from northern Peru and northwestern Brazil (Ramrez et al. 2003; Simone 2006), and was not mentioned under this name by Breure and Borrero (2008) for the Ecuadorian malacofauna. It may be restricted to lowlands (Huallaga is ~ 310m; Rio Pastaza watershed may refer to anywhere in a wide range of elevations). The date of Sowerbys publication of P. piperitus was erroneously given as 1833 by Breure (1979). Recently, Petit (2009) has given a valuable overview on the main publications of the Sowerby family; from his paper the correct date (1837) can be extracted (see also Shaw 1909). Lots USNM 316099 and 532641 associate this species with Plekocheilus (E.) roseolabrum (E.A. Smith 1877), which is considered here as a distinct species from Ecuador., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. Altitudinal range. The localities reported here range between 2520 and 3000 m (see remarks). Remarks. The date of first publication mentioned by Richardson (1995) is erroneous. He cited 1847 Philippi, Abbild. Beschr. neuer Conchyl. 3: 20, pl. 8 figs 5, 9 (1851). However, P. veranyi is mentioned on page 36, under the heading Bulimus. Tab. VIII. Januar 1849. Thus the first valid publication was in Pfeiffer (1848 a). Of the taxa grouped under this species by Richardson (1995: 324), we consider P. cathcartiae and P. quadricolor to be distinct species. This species is very similar to P. delicatus, but differs in being decidedly smaller. Colombian material, labeled as P. veranyi, should all be considered P. delicatus. Two reasons lead us to believe that the altitude of DMNH 148721 (3000 ft) may be in error: (1) Another lot from the same location (USNM 109523) is clearly labeled with an elevation of 3000 meters; (2) All known species of the subgenus Aeropictus, similar to P. succineoides, are known only from high elevations, mainly pramo (i.e., 2500 m and above); if correct, 3000 ft would be by far the lowest elevation known for any species in this group, which we consider unlikely. We have been unable to trace the localities Glorial and Escorial Mountains; the latter, may refer to a location near Pramo El Escorial (~ 3000 m), or near the town of El Escorial (~ 3100 m), both within the Sierra Nevada de Mrida. Tello (1975) included P. succinoides [sic] in his list of Venezuelan land snails (cf. Weyrauch), apparently as a misinterpretation of a portion of Weyrauchs (1967) description of the subgenus Orcesiellus. Contrary to Tello (1975: 201), we consider it likely that the species mentioned from Mrida by this author is P. veranyi (Pfeiffer)., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. “ Plekocheilus ” victor (Pfeiffer, 1854) Remarks. This taxon, described as Bulimus victor from Antioquia, is listed by Breure and Schouten (1985) under the subfamily Orthalicinae (= family Orthalicidae sensu Breure et al. 2010). The affiliation of this taxon to Plekocheilus as used by Pilsbry (1895 [1895 –1896]) and Richardson (1995) is uncertain. It will be treated in a forthcoming paper in this series.

Plekocheilus (Eurytus) taylorianus (Reeve, 1848) (Figs 15 CD) Bulimus taylorianus Reeve 1849: pl. 81 fig. 602. Type locality: Ecuador, near Quito, Chimborazo. The records available suggest that P. taylorianus is confined to Ecuador, but it may extend into northernmost Peru. Khler (2007): 127, fig. 5 mentioned a paralectotype in Berlin (ZMB 112.722). However, the picture shown is a different species of Plekocheilus. The lots available do not have actual records of altitude, but several of the localities listed are in the ~ 22002890 m range. However, Archidona and Puyo are lower (605 and 950 m), and a wide range of altitudes exists around Mindo (14004780 m). The label of lot USNM 316070 is clearly in error as the maximum elevation of Mt. Chimborazo is 6310 m; it is likely that those specimens were collected at a much lower elevation in the foothills of Chimborazo., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. Roraima: UMMZ 147717 (ex Linter, ex Tomlin). Remarks. According to Abbott (1989) and Haas (1955), this species has a wide distribution throughout Venezuela and northeastern Colombia. However, we have not seen any specimens from Colombia that can unambiguously be attributed to this taxon. The specimen from ANSP figured here matches the figure from Nyst (1843) quite well. Altitude data have been reported only for P. fulminans linterae (Sowerby III, 1890) and P. fulminans alticola (Haas, 1955) from the highlands in Venezuelan Guayana (see Breure 2009). The only other specific locality known, for the nominate form, is Cuman (near sea level), which might not be the actual collection locality (see also the general remark in the introduction). Subgenus Plekocheilus (Eurytus) Albers, 1850 Type species by subsequent designation (Albers 1860): Helix pentadina dOrbigny, 1835. Distribution. West Indies (St. Lucia, St. Vincent), Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama. Remarks. In the last comprehensive revision of this genus, Pilsbry (1895 [1895 1896]) divided this subgenus into seven groups of species. His grouping was based solely on shell morphology and mainly used shape, surface sculpture, columellar fold, expansion of peristome and suture of last whorl to differentiate among species. Anatomical data have been presented for relatively few of the more than 60 taxa known in this subgenus (Breure 1978, 2009; Breure & Schlgl 2010). Our grouping is thus based mainly on shell morphology, supplemented by the sparse anatomical data available for Colombian species. An additional comment on ecological settings where species of Eurytus occur is warranted. Based on ecological information then available, Breure (1979) suggested that two groups of species may be distinguished within this subgenus, namely a group that lives mainly in rain forest at altitudes of up to circa 1000 m, and a second group of species that live mainly in montane forest at altitudes of circa 12503500 m. We continue to adhere to this view, but have chosen to provide this information under each species when available, rather than providing a listing by elevation. Further, a number of species are still known only from the type collections, often without precise locality data., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. H., 2011, The Amphibulimidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Orthalicoidea) from Colombia and adjacent areas, pp. 1-59 in Zootaxa 3054 on page 25, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.278895, {"references":["Albers, J. C. Remarks. Regarding the collection locality of DMNH 12866 [Sta. Librada (Sarare)], there are places called Santa Librada in Quindo, Tolima, Vichada, and Cundinamarca. However, several reasons lead us to believe that the location in question is in the eastern plains of Colombia, and probably in Norte de Santander: (1) all other confirmed Colombian records for this species, and most of the species of Dryptus come from the lowlands of that region, and from Venezuela; (2) this species has not been collected in Quindo, Tolima or Cundinamarca; (3) a region known as regin del Sarare in the Cordillera Oriental (Eastern Range of the Andes), and Sarare, Santa Librada, 13001600 m are localities from which paratypic collections of ferns, Danae betancurii A. Rojas, 2009 have been reported (Rojas-Alvarado 2009 a). Thus, we place lots labeled Santa Librada and Santa Librada (Sarare) within Norte de Santander. We are aware that there is a Santa Librada in Vichada, and a location called El Sarare in Arauca within ~ 150 km of each other, both at less than 200 m of elevation. Of note is that if Rochereaus actual collection localitites were in Arauca/Vichada, they would still be consistent with a distribution of this species in the eastern plains of Colombia, including equivalent elevations. Likewise, there are several locations called Tmara, or Taman, in various departments of Colombia (Casanare, Boyac, Tolima); we consider that it is more likely either Quebrada Tmara, or Cerro Taman, both in Norte de Santander. In addition to the Venezuelan distribution indicated here, Tello (1975) listed Puerto Cabello (Edo. Carabobo), and Edo. Trujillo as localities for this species., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. H., 2011, The Amphibulimidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Orthalicoidea) from Colombia and adjacent areas, pp. 1-59 in Zootaxa 3054 on pages 9-10, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.278895, {"references":["Pfeiffer, L. Plekocheilus (Eurytus) jucundus (Pfeiffer, 1855) Bulimus jucundus Pfeiffer 1855 c: 290. Type locality: Colombia, Antioquia. Richardson 1995: 315 (references). Remarks. We have been unable to recognize this taxon in the material we have seen. The original figures suggest that it may prove to be a synonym of P. plectostylus (Pfeiffer, 1848). The location of the type is unknown., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. H., 2011, The Amphibulimidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Orthalicoidea) from Colombia and adjacent areas, pp. 1-59 in Zootaxa 3054 on page 53, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.278895, {"references":["Pfeiffer, L. Plekocheilus (Eurytus) tetensii (Dunker, 1875) (Figs 14 B, 16 NR) Bulimus tetensii Dunker 1875: 29. Type locality: Colombia, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Type material: not located. Plekocheilus tetensii (Dunker); Richardson 1995: 319 (references). Material. Cesar, Rio Guatapur, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: USNM 599530 (80009000 ft [~ 24002700 m], Carriker leg./ 1946, as Plekocheilus coloratus lamarckianus), USNM 599524, partim (12000 ft [~ 3600 m], as P. coloratus subplicatus), USNM 599525 (as P. coloratus subplicatus); La Guajira, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Pramos de Macotama, 1000015000 ft [~ 30004500 m], Carriker leg.: ANSP 151815; Cerro Pintado, Sierra de Perij, 1030010600 ft [~ 30903180 m], Carriker leg./ 1942, all as P. (E.) piperatoides: FMNH 62362; USNM 488807, USNM 488808 [Label indicates one specimen was collected at 9000 ft], MCZ 183872); Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, northern slope, above Pueblo vigio [Pueblo Viejo], 1400 m: ZMB 39226 [considered as topotypes by Khler 2007: 127, fig. 6]; Magdalena, Cuchilla Ginue, Cleef et al. leg./ 1977, in pramo vegetation (Calamagrostis sp. dominant) (Breure 1977, 1984): RMNH (Filo Alto La Cumbre, 3700m), ICNB (3000 m). Altitudinal range. 14004500 m. If the material has been correctly labeled, this represents the highest elevation reported here for species of Plekocheilus and Dryptus. Remarks. We consider Khlers decision (2007) to regard specimens from Pueblo Viejo as topotypes as somewhat arbitrary, as there is no evidence that Dunkers specimens originate from that specific locality. The specimens from Sierra de Perij, Cerro Pintado are tentatively referred to this species, as they differ in being smaller and having the lip and parietal callus pink., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S. Plekocheilus (Aeropictus) guentheri (Sowerby III, 1892) comb. nov. (Figs 5 MP, 9 A) Bulimus (Plekocheilus) guildingi Dohrn 1875: 306, pl. 10 figs 56. Type locality: Neu-Granada. Syntype ZMB 101709. Not Bulimus guildingi Pfeiffer, 1842. Bulimus guentheri Sowerby III 1892: 296, pl. 23 figs 78. Type locality: U.S. of Colombia. Plekocheilus guentheri (Sowerby); Richardson 1995: 315 (references). Plekocheilus (Eurytus) ameghinoi Parodiz 1962: 451. New name for B. guildingi Dohrn, 1875 not Pfeiffer, 1842. Plekocheilus ameghinoi Parodiz; Richardson 1995: 302 (references, synonymy). Material. Antioquia/Crdoba, Rio Esmeralda, Upper Rio Sin, Carriker leg./ 1949: USNM 601774.?, U S Colombia: ANSP 104845, USNM 532640, USNM 532644 (ex Fulton, Chamberlain Colln). Remarks. Both the Rio Esmeralda and the Rio Sin run from northern Antioquia to Crdoba; the reference to Upper Rio Sin suggests that the specific location is probably in the highlands of the border area between both departments in the Parque Nacional Natural Paramillo. This is the first precise locality for this species. Pilsbry (1901: 129) was the first to notice the homonymy of this species with Bulimus guildingi Pfeiffer, 1842; therefore he suppressed Dohrns name in favour of Sowerbys. Later Parodiz (1962) introduced the name Plekocheilus (Eurytus) ameghinoi as a new name for P. guildingi (Dohrn), apparently unaware of Pilsbrys action. Khler (2007: 127, fig. 3) found three probable syntypes of Bulimus guildingi Dohrn (type locality: Neu Granada ) in the Berlin museum., Published as part of Borrero, Francisco J. & Breure, Abraham S.
