The atomic-level structure of interfaces between Pt and a transition form of Al2O3 were studied using a combination of electron microscopy and first principles calculations. A model system of Pt nanoprecipitates in Al2O3 were formed in sapphire wafers via high-energy ion implantation of Pt followed by thermal annealing at 1000 °C in air. The Pt nanoparticles took the form of tetrahedra and truncated tetrahedra primarily bound by {111}Pt facets. The high prevalence of these facets motivated the development of density functional theory (DFT) based models of (111)Pt interfaces with six different chemical terminations of (2¯01) θ-alumina. The atomic-level structure of the Pt/Al2O3 interfaces was characterized with aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and the experimental images were compared to STEM image simulations of the DFT models. The model interface with Pt bonded to oxygen-terminated θ-Al2O3, with the Pt located on top of the O and with an underlying layer of octahedral Al, provided the best match to the experimental images. This interfacial termination is also the most stable for the thermal annealing conditions used based on thermodynamic calculations of the interfacial energy as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. This experimentally verified model provides a basis for improving models of Pt/γ-alumina interfaces.

The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here, we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition-rate Electron Scattering) instrument, which blends relativistic electrons and high repetition rates to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in average beam current compared to the existing state-of-the-art instruments. The setup utilizes a novel electron source to deliver femtosecond duration electron pulses at up to MHz repetition rates for UED experiments. Instrument response function of sub-500 fs is demonstrated with < 100 fs time resolution targeted in future. We provide example cases of diffraction measurements on solid-state and gas-phase samples, including both micro- and nanodiffraction (featuring 100 nm beam size) modes, which showcase the potential of the instrument for novel UED experiments.

One approach to three-dimensional structure determination using the wealth of scattering data in four-dimensional (4D) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is the parallax method proposed by Ophus et al. (2019. Advanced phase reconstruction methods enabled by 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy, Microsc Microanal25, 10-11), which determines the scattering matrix and uses it to synthesize a virtual depth-sectioning reconstruction of the sample structure. Drawing on an equivalence with a hypothetical confocal imaging mode, we derive contrast transfer and point spread functions for this parallax method applied to weakly scattering objects, showing them identical to earlier depth-sectioning STEM modes when only bright field signal is used, but that improved depth resolution is possible if dark field signal can be used. Through a simulation-based study of doped Si, we show that this depth resolution is preserved for thicker samples, explore the impact of shot noise on the parallax reconstructions, discuss challenges to making use of dark field signal, and identify cases where the interpretation of the parallax reconstruction breaks down.

A Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel with a nominal composition of Fe-16.4Mn-0.9C-0.5Si-0.05Nb-0.05V was deformed to an engineering strain of 6%. The strain around the deformation twins were mapped using the 4D-STEM technique. Strain mapping showed a large average elastic strain of approximately 6% in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the twinning direction. However, the large average strain comprised of several hot spots of even larger strains of up to 12%. These hot spots could be attributed to a high density of sessile Frank dislocations on the twin boundary and correspond to shear stresses of 1–1.5 GPa. The strain and therefore stress fields are significantly larger than other materials known to twin and are speculated to be responsible for the early thickness saturation of TWIP steel nanotwins. The ability to keep twins extremely thin helps improve grain fragmentation, i.e. the dynamic Hall–Petch effect, and underpins the large elongations and strain hardening rates in TWIP steels.

The atomic-level structure of platinum/γ-alumina interfaces is characterized in a model system of dense γ-alumina embedded with faceted Pt NPs produced by implantation of platinum ions into sapphire followed by thermal annealing in air at 800 °C. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) was used to collect atomic-resolution images, which are compared to STEM image simulations of two experimentally-based bulk models of γ-alumina by Smrčok et al. and Zhou and Snyder. A density functional theory (DFT) based model of (111) interfaces with different chemical terminations (O, Al1, Al2) of the γ-alumina developed by Oware Sarfo et al. is also compared to experimental STEM data from Pt/γ-alumina interfaces. The Smrčok γ-alumina model provides a better fit than the Zhou structure to the bulk of the γ-alumina. The oxygen-terminated Oware Sarfo model best fits the experimental data and is a very good model close to the interface. However, the fit of the interface model to the experimental data is poorer beyond the third atomic layer in the γ-alumina. This is attributed to compromises required in the design of the model to limit the cell size and computational time for DFT calculations. Understanding the accuracy and limits of the structural models of γ-alumina and Pt/γ-alumina interfaces is important to further the understanding of the structure/property relationships in this system.

Quasi-two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides are a key platform for exploring emergent nanoscale phenomena arising from complex interactions. Access to the underlying degrees-of-freedom on their natural time scales motivates the use of advanced ultrafast probes sensitive to self-organised atomic-scale patterns. Here, we report the ultrafast investigation of TaTe2, which exhibits unique charge and lattice trimer order characterised by a transition upon cooling from stripe-like chains into a (3 × 3) superstructure of trimer clusters. Utilising MeV-scale ultrafast electron diffraction, we capture the photo-induced TaTe2 structural dynamics – exposing a rapid ≈ 1.4 ps melting of its low-temperature ordered state followed by recovery via thermalisation into a hot cluster superstructure. Density-functional calculations indicate that the initial quench is triggered by intra-trimer Ta charge transfer which destabilises the clusters, unlike melting of charge density waves in other TaX2 compounds. Our work paves the way for further exploration and ultimately rapid optical and electronic manipulation of trimer superstructures.

The ability to alloy different elements is critical for property tuning and materials discovery. However, general alloying at the nanoscale remains extremely challenging due to strong immiscibility and easy oxidation, particularly for early transition metals that are highly reactive. Here, we report nanoscale alloying using a high-temperature- and high-entropy-based strategy (T∗ΔSmix) to significantly expand the possible alloys and include early transition metals. While high-temperature synthesis favors alloy formation and metal reduction, the high-entropy compositional design is critical to further extending the alloying to strongly repelling combinations (e.g., Au-W) and easily oxidized elements (e.g., Zr). In particular, we explicitly characterized a record 15-element nanoalloy, which showed a solid-solution structure featuring localized strain and lattice distortions as a result of extreme mixing. Our study significantly broadens available compositions of nanoalloys and provides clear guidelines by utilizing the less-explored entropic chemistry.

Three-dimensional phase-contrast imaging of multiply-scattering samples in x-ray and electron microscopy is challenging due to small numerical apertures, the unavailability of wave front shaping optics, and the highly nonlinear inversion required from intensity-only measurements. In this work, we present an algorithm using the scattering matrix formalism to solve the scattering from a noncrystalline medium from scanning diffraction measurements and simultaneously recover the illumination aberrations. We demonstrate our method experimentally in a scanning transmission electron microscope, recovering the scattering matrix of a heterogeneous sample with two layers of multiwall carbon nanotubes filled with TaTe2 core-shell structures, spaced 10nm apart in the axial direction. Our work enables phase contrast imaging and materials characterization in multiply-scattering samples at high resolution for a wide range of materials.

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) has drawn much attention, as it stabilizes magnetic chirality, with important implications in fundamental and applied research. This antisymmetric exchange interaction is induced by the broken inversion symmetry at interfaces or in noncentrosymmetric lattices. Significant interfacial DMIs are often found at magnetic/heavy-metal interfaces with large spin-orbit coupling. Recent studies have shown promise for induced DMI at interfaces involving light elements such as carbon (graphene) or oxygen. Here, we report direct observation of induced DMI by chemisorption of the lightest element, hydrogen, on a ferromagnetic layer at room temperature, which is supported by density functional theory calculations. We further demonstrate a reversible chirality transition of the magnetic domain walls due to the induced DMI via hydrogen chemisorption and desorption. These results shed new light on the understanding of DMI in low atomic number materials and the design of novel chiral spintronics and magneto-ionic devices.

The near equiatomic NiTi alloy is the most successful shape memory alloy by a large margin. It is widely and increasingly used in biomedical devices. Yet, despite having a repeatable superelastic effect and excellent shape-memory, NiTi is very far from satisfying the conditions that characterize the most reversible phase-transforming materials. Thus, the scientific reasons underlying its vast success present an enigma. In this paper, we perform rigorous mathematical derivations and accurate density-functional theory calculations of transformation mechanisms to seek previously unrecognized twinlike defects that we term involution domains, and we observe them in real space in NiTi by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Involution domains lead to an additional 216 compatible interfaces between phases in NiTi, and we theorize that this feature contributes importantly to its reliability. They are expected to arise in other transformations and to alter the conventional interpretation of the mechanism of the martensitic transformation.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures, which usually exist in noncentrosymmetric materials where the crystal inversion symmetry breaking generates the so-called Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This requirement unfortunately excludes many important magnetic material classes, including the recently found two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials, which offer unprecedented opportunities for spintronic technology. Using photoemission electron microscopy and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we investigated and stabilized Néel-type magnetic skyrmion in vdW ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 on top of (Co/Pd) n in which the Fe3GeTe2 has a centrosymmetric crystal structure. We demonstrate that the magnetic coupling between the Fe3GeTe2 and the (Co/Pd) n could create skyrmions in Fe3GeTe2 without the need of an external magnetic field. Our results open exciting opportunities in spintronic research and the engineering of topologically protected nanoscale features by expanding the group of skyrmion host materials to include these previously unknown vdW magnets.

Fluctuation electron microscopy (FEM) is a scanning nanodiffraction-based method that offers a unique approach to characterizing nanometer-scale medium-range order (MRO) in disordered materials. In addition to determining the degree of MRO, careful analysis of scanning nanodiffraction data can also be used to determine strain in thin film amorphous samples. We applied FEM to characterize the strain and MRO of magnetron sputtered amorphous tantalum (a-Ta) thin films over a range of tilt angles from 0 ° to 45 ° in order to measure any deviations between the in-plane and out-of-plane strain and MRO. We validate our approach using electron diffraction simulations of FEM experiments for a-Ta. We measure anisotropic strain in the simulated a-Ta diffraction patterns and find that the experimental a-Ta is isotropically strained within the accuracy of our method. Our approach provides a workflow for acquiring tilted scanning nanodiffraction data, determining the relative strain and ordering as a function of in- A nd out-of-plane directions, and removing any artifacts induced in FEM data due to strain. We also describe some limitations of the tilted FEM method when applied to thin films with very low strains.

Montmorillonite (MMT) clay - a layered porous nanomaterial used as seals in engineered waste containment barriers for spent nuclear fuel - adopts discrete hydration/swelling states depending upon surrounding water and ion activities and confining pressure. The structure of nanoconfined water and charge-balancing counterions in the clay mineral interlayers dictate the swelling and mechanical behavior of MMT, so a molecular model for this clay with high structural fidelity is required to accurately predict the reliability of long-term nuclear waste storage. Here, we present a molecular model for MMT that is based on high resolution transmission electron microscopy of Wyoming-MMT single crystals. Imaging data unambiguously show a cis-vacant arrangement of structural hydroxyl groups in the octahedral sheet, whereas existing molecular models assume a centrosymmetric trans-vacant configuration for MMT. Using atomistic simulations, we find that the cis-vacant arrangement of structural hydroxyl groups significantly affects the structure of adsorbed water yielding a larger population of hydrogen bonds with bridging oxygens on the tetrahedral sheet and weak hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl groups in the octahedral sheet and water in the clay mineral interlayers. As a result, water adsorbed in the interlayer is more "ice-like", with stronger ordering and lower density, although the diffusivity of the interlayer species is not significantly diminished. Our improved structural model for MMT provides insight into the energetics of water adsorption, which ultimately dictates its pore- to macro-scale swelling, transport, and fracture properties.

Strong multiple scattering of the probe in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) means image simulations are usually required for quantitative interpretation and analysis of elemental maps produced by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). These simulations require a full quantum-mechanical treatment of multiple scattering of the electron beam, both before and after a core-level inelastic transition. Current algorithms scale quadratically and can take up to a week to calculate on desktop machines even for simple crystal unit cells and do not scale well to the nanoscale heterogeneous systems that are often of interest to materials science researchers. We introduce an algorithm with linear scaling that typically results in an order of magnitude reduction in computation time for these calculations without introducing additional error and discuss approximations that further improve computational scaling for larger-scale objects with modest penalties in calculation error. We demonstrate these speedups by calculating the atomic resolution STEM-EELS map using the L-edge transition of Fe, for a nanoparticle 80 Å in diameter, in 16 hours, a calculation that would have taken at least 80 days using a conventional multislice approach.

A recent meeting focused on accelerated materials design and discovery examined user requirements for a general, collaborative, integrative, and on-demand materials research platform.

Large superelastic deformation in ferroelastic-ferroelectrics (FMs) is a complex phenomenon involving multiple mechanisms operating simultaneously. Understanding how these mechanisms contribute corporately is critical to apply this useful property to the intrinsically brittle FMs, which can therefore display both excellent functional and mechanical performance. Here, we have directly observed and quantitatively analyzed in situ in a transmission electron microscope the three main mechanisms of twinning domain, phase transformation and mobile point defect contributing to extremely large superelastic deformation in single-crystal BaTiO3 (5.0% strain) and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (10.1% strain). Our results reveal the hierarchical origin of large recoverable strain in “brittle” FMs.

The formation of complex hierarchical nanostructures has attracted a lot of attention from both the fundamental science and potential applications point of view. Spherulite structures with radial fibrillar branches have been found in various solids; however, their growth mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we report real time imaging of the formation of two-dimensional (2D) iron oxide spherulite nanostructures in a liquid cell using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By tracking the growth trajectories, we show the characteristics of the reaction front and growth kinetics. Our observations reveal that the tip of a growing branch splits as the width exceeds certain sizes (5.5–8.5 nm). The radius of a spherulite nanostructure increases linearly with time at the early stage, transitioning to nonlinear growth at the later stage. Furthermore, a thin layer of solid is accumulated at the tip and nanoparticles from secondary nucleation also appear at the growing front which later develop into fibrillar branches. The spherulite nanostructure is polycrystalline with the co-existence of ferrihydrite and Fe3O4 through-out the growth. A growth model is further established, which provides rational explanations on the linear growth at the early stage and the nonlinearity at the later stage of growth. Complex topological configurations are fertile ground for exploring emergent phenomena and exotic phases in condensed-matter physics. For example, the recent discovery of polarization vortices and their associated complex-phase coexistence and response under applied electric fields in superlattices of (PbTiO3)n/(SrTiO3)n suggests the presence of a complex, multi-dimensional system capable of interesting physical responses, such as chirality, negative capacitance and large piezo-electric responses1-3. Here, by varying epitaxial constraints, we discover room-temperature polar-skyrmion bubbles in a lead titanate layer confined by strontium titanate layers, which are imaged by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Phase-field modelling and second-principles calculations reveal that the polar-skyrmion bubbles have a skyrmion number of +1, and resonant soft-X-ray diffraction experiments show circular dichroism, confirming chirality. Such nanometre-scale polar-skyrmion bubbles are the electric analogues of magnetic skyrmions, and could contribute to the advancement of ferroelectrics towards functionalities incorporating emergent chirality and electrically controllable negative capacitance.

Searching for scientific data requires metadata providing a relevant context. Today, generating metadata is a time and labor intensive manual process that is often neglected, and important datasets are not accessible through search. We investigate the use of machine learning to generalize metadata from a subset of labeled data, thus increasing the availability of meaningful metadata for search. Specifically, we consider electron microscopy images collected at the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and use deep learning to discern characteristics from a small subset of labeled images and transfer labels to the entire image corpus. Relatively small training set sizes and a minimum resolution of 512\times 512 pixels required by the application domain pose unique challenges. We overcome these challenges by using a simple yet powerful convolutional network architecture that limits the number of free parameters to lower the required amount of computational power and reduce the risk of overfitting. We achieve a classification accuracy of approximately 80% in discerning between images recorded in two operating modes of the electron microscope-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). We use transfer learning-i.e., re-using the pre-trained convolution layers from the TEM vs. STEM classification problem-to generalize labels and achieve an accuracy of approximately 70 % despite current experiments being limited to small training data sets. We present these predictions as suggestions to domain scientists through a web-based tool to accelerate the labeling process with the goal of further validating our approach and improving the accuracy of automatically created labels.

The projected electrostatic potential of a thick crystal is reconstructed at atomic resolution from experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy data recorded using a new generation fast-readout electron camera. This practical and deterministic inversion of the equations encapsulating multiple scattering that were written down by Bethe in 1928 removes the restriction of established methods to ultrathin (≲50  Å) samples. Instruments already coming on line can overcome the remaining resolution-limiting effects in this method due to finite probe-forming aperture size, spatial incoherence, and residual lens aberrations.

Efficient imaging of biomolecules, two-dimensional materials, and electromagnetic fields depends on retrieval of the phase of transmitted electrons. We demonstrate a method to measure phase in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) using a nanofabricated diffraction grating to produce multiple probe beams. The measured phase is more interpretable than phase-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques without an off-axis reference wave, and the resolution could surpass that of off-axis electron holography. We apply this technique, called STEM holography, to image nanoparticles, carbon substrates, and electric fields. The contrast observed in experiments agrees well with contrast predicted in simulations.

Scientific facilities are increasingly generating and handling large amounts of data from experiments and simulations. Next-generation scientific discoveries rely on insights derived from data, especially across domain boundaries. Search capabilities are critical to enable scientists to discover datasets of interest. However, scientific datasets often lack the signals or metadata required for effective searches. Thus, we need formalized methods and systems to automatically annotate scientific datasets from the data and its surrounding context. Additionally, a search infrastructure needs to account for the scale and rate of application data volumes. In this paper, we present ScienceSearch, a system infrastructure that uses machine learning techniques to capture and learn the knowledge, context, and surrounding artifacts from data to generate metadata and enable search. Our current implementation is focused on a dataset from the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM), an electron microscopy facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory sponsored by the Department of Energy which supports hundreds of users and stores millions of micrographs. In this paper, we describe a) our search infrastructure and model, b) methods for generating metadata using machine learning techniques, and c) optimizations to improve search latency, and deployment on an HPC system. We demonstrate that ScienceSearch is capable of producing valid metadata for NCEM's dataset and providing low-latency good quality search results over a scientific dataset.

Properties of soft crystalline materials such as synthetic polymers are governed by locations of constituent atoms. Determining atomic-scale structures in these materials is difficult because they degrade rapidly when studied by electron microscopy, and techniques such as X-ray scattering average over volumes much larger than coherent blocks of the unit cells. We obtained cryo-electron microscopy images of self-assembled nanosheets of a peptoid polymer, made by solid-phase synthesis, in which we see a variety of crystalline motifs. A combination of crystallographic and single-particle methods, developed for cryo-electron microscopy of biological macromolecules, was used to obtain high-resolution images of the crystals. Individual crystals contain grains that are mirror images of each other with concomitant grain boundaries. We have used molecular dynamic simulations to build an atomic model of the crystal structure to facilitate the interpretation of electron micrographs. Direct visualization of crystalline grains and grain boundaries on atomic length scales represents a new level of information for the polymer field.

Using ex-situ transmission electron microscopy and the recently developed nanoprobe diffraction (NPD) technique, we characterize a nanoindented solution treated gum metal. Lattice rotations are resolved at a 1.2 nm length-scale and shown to be continuous within the nanoindentation pit; further, it is shown that these can be accommodated by a reasonable number of geometrically necessary dislocations at a density of ∼1015/m2. We additionally provide direct evidence that dislocations within the nanoindent, rather than secondary phase nanoparticles, can serve as potent barriers to dislocation motion. We also demonstrate that plasticity in these alloys under nanoindentation can be accommodated solely by dislocation nucleation and propagation, with no competing deformation mechanisms present. Conventional transmission electron microscopy and “g•b” analysis reveal the presence of dislocations on 〈1¯11〉{110} slip systems and highly localized plastic deformation in the form of shear bands on {1¯1¯2} slip systems, similar to previously observed “giant faults”.

The local elastic strains during tensile deformation in a CuZrAlAg metallic glass are obtained by fitting an elliptic shape function to the characteristic amorphous ring in electron diffraction patterns. Scanning nanobeam electron diffraction enables strain mapping with a resolution of a few nanometers. Here, a fast direct electron detector is used to acquire the diffraction patterns at a sufficient speed to map the local transient strain during continuous tensile loading in situ in the transmission electron microscope. The elastic strain in tensile direction was found to increase during loading. After catastrophic fracture, a residual elastic strain that relaxes over time was observed.

The choice of chemical composition of lithium- and manganese-rich transition metal oxides used as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries can significantly impact their long-term viability as storage solutions for clean energy automotive applications. Their structure has been widely debated: conflicting conclusions drawn from individual studies often considering different compositions have made it challenging to reach a consensus and inform future research. Here, complementary electron microscopy techniques over a wide range of length scales reveal the effect of lithium-to-transition metal-ratio on the surface and bulk structure of these materials. We found that decreasing the lithium-to-transition metal-ratio resulted in a significant change in terms of order and atomic-level local composition in the bulk of these cathode materials. However, throughout the composition range studied, the materials consisted solely of a monoclinic phase, with lower lithium content materials showing more chemical ordering defects. In contrast, the spinel-structured surface present on specific crystallographic facets exhibited no noticeable structural change when varying the ratio of lithium to transition metal. The structural observations from this study warrant a reexamination of commonly assumed models linking poor electrochemical performance with bulk and surface structure.

Nanobeam electron diffraction strain mapping has been used to measure the strain evolution in stainless steel under in situ deformation. As the amount of deformation increases, the leading dislocation of a planar slip band leaves behind a residual strain in the form of a small lattice expansion. Dislocation analysis confirmed that the dislocations involved were type. While the characteristic residual strain of planar slip has often been observed, it has never before been directly measured. Our results provide a view into the dynamic mechanisms of planar slip, and showcase the possibilities of multidimensional in situ imaging.

A key to the unique combination of electronic and optical properties in halide perovskite materials lies in their rich structural complexity. However, their radiation sensitive nature limits nanoscale structural characterization requiring dose efficient microscopic techniques in order to determine their structures precisely. In this work, we determine the space-group and directly image the Br halide sites of CsPbBr3, a promising material for optoelectronic applications. Based on the symmetry of high-order Laue zone reflections of convergent-beam electron diffraction, we identify the tetragonal (I4/mcm) structural phase of CsPbBr3 at cryogenic temperature. Electron ptychography provides a highly sensitive phase contrast measurement of the halide positions under low electron-dose conditions, enabling imaging of the elongated Br sites originating from the out-of-phase octahedral rotation viewed along the [001] direction of I4/mcm persisting at room temperature. The measurement of these features and comparison with simulations yield an octahedral rotation angle of 6.5°(±1.5°). The approach demonstrated here opens up opportunities for understanding the atomic scale structural phenomena applying advanced characterization tools on a wide range of radiation sensitive halide-based all-inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites.

A high frame rate detector system is being developed to enable fast real-time data analysis of scanning diffraction experiments in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). This is an end-to-end development that encompasses the data producing detector, data transportation, and real-time processing of data. The detector will consist of a central pixel sensor that is surrounded by annular silicon diodes. Both components of the detector system will synchronously capture data at almost 100 kHz frame rate, which produces an approximately 400 Gb/s data stream. Low-level preprocessing will be implemented in firmware before the data is streamed from the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Live data processing, before it lands on disk, will happen on the Cori supercomputer and aims to present scientists with prompt experimental feedback. This online analysis will provide rough information of the sample that can be utilized for sample alignment, sample monitoring and verification that the experiment is set up correctly. Only a compressed version of the relevant data is then selected for more in-depth processing.

Crystal symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) materials plays an important role in their electronic and optical properties. Engineering symmetry in 2D materials has recently emerged as a promising way to achieve novel properties and functions. The noncentrosymmetric structure of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), has allowed for valley control via circularly polarized optical excitation. In bilayer TMDCs, inversion symmetry can be controlled by varying the stacking sequence, thus providing a pathway to engineer valley selectivity. Here, we report the in situ integration of AA′ and AB stacked bilayer MoS2 with different inversion symmetries by creating atomically sharp stacking boundaries between the differently stacked domains, via thermal stimulation and electron irradiation, inside an atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The setup enables us to track the formation and atomic motion of the stacking boundaries in real time and with ultrahigh resolution which enables in-depth analysis on the atomic structure at the boundaries. In conjunction with density functional theory calculations, we establish the dynamics of the boundary nucleation and expansion and further identify metallic boundary states. Our approach provides a means to synthesize domain boundaries with intriguing transport properties and opens up a new avenue for controlling valleytronics in nanoscale domains via real-time patterning of domains with different symmetry properties.

Manipulating free-space electron wave functions with laser fields can bring about new electron-optical elements for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, a Zernike phase plate would enable high-contrast TEM imaging of soft matter, leading to new opportunities in structural biology and materials science. A Zernike phase plate can be implemented using a tight, intense continuous laser focus that shifts the phase of the electron wave by the ponderomotive potential. Here, we use a near-concentric cavity to focus 7.5 kW of continuous-wave circulating laser power at 1064 nm into a 7 µm mode waist, achieving a record continuous laser intensity of 40 GW/cm2. Such parameters are sufficient to impart a phase shift of 1 rad to a 10 keV electron beam, or 0.16 rad to a 300 keV beam. Our numerical simulations confirm that the standing-wave phase shift profile imprinted on the electron wave by the intra-cavity field can serve as a nearly ideal Zernike phase plate.

The local atomic structure of a crystalline sample aligned along a zone axis can be probed with a focused electron probe, which produces a convergent beam electron diffraction pattern. The introduction of high speed direct electron detectors has allowed for experiments that can record a full diffraction pattern image at thousands of probe positions on a sample. By incoherently summing these patterns over crystalline unit cells, we demonstrate that in addition to crystal structure and thickness, we can also estimate the local composition of a perovskite superlattice sample. This is achieved by matching the summed patterns to a library of simulated diffraction patterns. This technique allows for atomic-scale chemical measurements without requiring a spectrometer or hardware aberration correction.

Atomically thin MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising candidate for next-generation electronics due to inherent CVD scalability and controllability. However, it is well known that the stacking sequence in few-layer MoS2 can significantly impact electrical and optical properties. Herein we report different intrinsic stacking sequences in CVD-grown few-layer MoS2 obtained by atomic-resolution annular-dark-field imaging in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope operated at 50 keV. Trilayer MoS2 displays a new stacking sequence distinct from the commonly observed 2H and 3R phases of MoS2. Density functional theory is used to examine the stability of different stacking sequences, and the findings are consistent with our experimental observations.

We report on the development of a nanometer scale strain mapping technique by means of scanning nano-beam electron diffraction. Only recently possible due to fast acquisition with a direct electron detector, this technique allows for strain mapping with a high precision of 0.1% at a lateral resolution of 1 nm for a large field of view reaching up to 1 μm. We demonstrate its application to a technologically relevant strain-engineered GaAs/GaAsP hetero-structure and show that the method can even be applied to highly defected regions with substantial changes in local crystal orientation. Strain maps derived from atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy images were used to validate the accuracy, precision and resolution of this versatile technique.
