Abstract: A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. Abstract: The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Abstract: The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $\tau_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $\tau_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $\tau_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ are available for $\tau_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data., Comment: 45 pages, 38 tables, 13 figures

Abstract: The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton-proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-$x$ decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha_s$ or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $0.0112 \pm 3.9\,\%_\text{stat} \pm 4.5\,\%_\text{syst} \pm 1.6\,\%_\text{mod}$ in the selected kinematic region of $150< Q^2<1500$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $0.14< y<0.7$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb$^{-1}$, sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. Abstract: The radiation pattern within high energy quark- and gluon-initiated jets (jet substructure) is used extensively as a precision probe of the strong force as well as an environment for optimizing event generators with numerous applications in high energy particle and nuclear physics. Looking at electron-proton collisions is of particular interest as many of the complications present at hadron colliders are absent. A detailed study of modern jet substructure observables, jet angularities, in electron-proton collisions is presented using data recorded using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is unbinned and multi-dimensional, using machine learning to correct for detector effects. All of the available reconstructed object information of the respective jets is interpreted by a graph neural network, achieving superior precision on a selected set of jet angularities. Training these networks was enabled by the use of a large number of GPUs in the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab. The particle jets are reconstructed in the laboratory frame, using the $k_{\mathrm{T}}$ jet clustering algorithm. Results are reported at high transverse momentum transfer $Q^2>150$ GeV${}^2$, and inelasticity $0.2 < y < 0.7$. The analysis is also performed in sub-regions of $Q^2$, thus probing scale dependencies of the substructure variables. Abstract: The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input., Comment: 43 pages, 24 figures, to be submitted to Eur. Phys. J. C

Abstract: The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm OmniFold, which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared to calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as well as Monte Carlo event generators. Abstract: The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_Z$ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1166\,(19)_{\rm exp}\,(24)_{\rm th}$. Complementary, $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. Abstract: Background Drones are able to deliver automated external defibrillators in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) but can be deployed for other purposes. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of sending live photos to dispatch centres before arrival of other units during time-critical incidents. Methods In this retrospective observational study, the regional dispatch centre implemented a new service using five existing AED-drone systems covering an estimated 200 000 inhabitants in Sweden. Drones were deployed automatically over a 4-month study period (December 2022–April 2023) in emergency calls involving suspected OHCAs, traffic accidents and fires in buildings. Upon arrival at the scene, an overhead photo was taken and transmitted to the dispatch centre. Feasibility of providing photos in real time, and time delays intervals were examined. Results Overall, drones were deployed in 59/440 (13%) of all emergency calls: 26/59 (44%) of suspected OHCAs, 20/59 (34%) of traffic accidents, and 13/59 (22%) of fires in buildings. The main reasons for non-deployment were closed airspace and unfavourable weather conditions (68%). Drones arrived safely at the exact location in 58/59 cases (98%). Their overall median response time was 3:49 min, (IQR 3:18–4:26) vs. emergency medical services (EMS), 05:51 (IQR: 04:29–08:04) p-value for time difference between drone and EMS = 0,05. Drones arrived first on scene in 47/52 cases (90%) and the largest median time difference was found in suspected OHCAs 4:10 min, (IQR: 02:57–05:28). The time difference in the 5/52 (10%) cases when EMS arrived first the time difference was 5:18 min (IQR 2:19–7:38), p = NA. Photos were transmitted correctly in all 59 alerts. No adverse events occurred. Conclusion In a newly implemented drone dispatch service, drones were dispatched to 13% of relevant EMS calls. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Latinos have lower rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and later stage diagnosis than Whites, which may be partially explained by physician communication factors. OBJECTIVE: We assessed associations between patient-reported physician counseling regarding CRC screening and receipt of CRC screening among Latino primary care patients. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional telephone survey. PARTICIPANTS: The participants of this study were Latino primary care patients 50 years of age or older, with one or more visits during the preceding year. MAIN MEASURES: We developed patient-reported measures to assess whether physicians provided explanations of CRC risks and tests, elicited patients’ barriers to CRC screening, were responsive to patients’ concerns about screening, and encouraged patients to be screened. Outcomes were patient reports of receipt of endoscopy (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy) and fecal occult blood test (FOBT) within recommended guidelines. KEY RESULTS: Of 817 eligible patients contacted, 505 (62 %) completed the survey; mean age was 61 years (SD 8.4), 69 % were women, and 53 % had less than high school education. Forty-six percent reported obtaining endoscopy (with or without FOBT), 13 % reported FOBT only, and 41 % reported no CRC screening. In bivariate analyses, physician explanations, elicitation of barriers, responsiveness to concerns, and greater encouragement for screening were associated with receipt of endoscopy (p < 0.001), and explanations (p < 0.05) and encouragement (p < 0.001) were associated with FOBT. Adjusting for covariates, physician explanations (OR = 1.27; 95 % CI 1.03, 1.58) and greater physician encouragement (OR = 6.74; 95 % CI 3.57, 12.72) were associated with endoscopy; patients reporting quite a bit/a lot of physician encouragement had six times higher odds of obtaining the FOBT as those reporting none/a little encouragement (OR = 6.54; 95 % CI 2.76, 15.48). CONCLUSIONS: Among primarily lower-socioeconomic status Latino patients, the degree to which patients perceived that physicians encouraged CRC screening was more strongly associated with screening than with providing risk information, eliciting barriers, and responding to their concerns about screening.

Abstract: Appropriately designing the proposal kernel of particle filters is an issue of significant importance, since a bad choice may lead to deterioration of the particle sample and, consequently, waste of computational power. In this paper we introduce a novel algorithm adaptively approximating the so-called optimal proposal kernel by a mixture of integrated curved exponential distributions with logistic weights. This family of distributions, referred to as mixtures of experts, is broad enough to be used in the presence of multi-modality or strongly skewed distributions. The mixtures are fitted, via online-EM methods, to the optimal kernel through minimisation of the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the auxiliary target and instrumental distributions of the particle filter. At each iteration of the particle filter, the algorithm is required to solve only a single optimisation problem for the whole particle sample, yielding an algorithm with only linear complexity. Abstract: We report on searches in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering for narrow baryonic states decaying into $\Xi^-\pi^-, \Xi^-\pi^+, \KS p$ and their charge conjugates, at centre-of-mass energies of 300 and 318 GeV. No signal for a new narrow baryonic state is observed in the mass ranges 1600-2100 MeV ($\Xi\pi$) and from threshold up to 1700 MeV ($\KS p$). The standard baryon $\Xi(1530)^0$ is observed in the decay mode $\Xi^-\pi^+$, and mass dependent upper limits on the ratio of the hypothetical pentaquark states $\Xi^{--}_{5q}$ and $\Xi^0_{5q}$ to the $\Xi(1530)^0$ signal are given. Also for the hypothetical strange pentaquark $\Theta^+$ mass dependent upper limits on $\sigma(ep\to e\Theta^+X)\times BR(\Theta^+\to K^0p)$ are obtained. Abstract: Exclusive $\rho^{\circ}$ photoproduction has been measured with high statistics by the H1 Collaboration. The kinematical range is $20 < W < 90$ GeV, $|t|<3$ GeV$^2$ and $Q^2<4$ GeV$^2$. Cross sections are measured differentially in $W$ and $t$ and allow the extraction of the Pomeron trajectory, for the first time using $\rho^{\circ}$ photoproduction data of one single experiment. Abstract: Selected recent results from the H1 and ZEUS experiments are reviewed, illustrating some of the many facets of ``meson physics'' at the HERA ep collider. The results cover exclusive elastic and proton-dissociative diffractive vector meson production and comparisons with recent theoretical calculations show that perturbative QCD models are successful in describing these processes when at least one of the involved scales have large values. Furthermore a search for odderon induced exclusive photoproduction of pseudoscalar and tensor mesons is described; upper limits for the cross sections are below recent theoretical predictions. 29. Search for Odderon induced contributions to exclusive Meson Photoproduction at HERA

Abstract: Odderon induced contributions to exclusive photoproduction of $\pi^{\circ}$, $f_2(1270)$ and $a_2(1320)$ have been searched for at HERA, using the multiphoton decays of these mesons. No indication for such contributions was found, in a kinematic region defined by the average photon-proton centre-of-mass energy $ = 200 - 215$ GeV, photon virtualities $Q^2 < 0.01 $GeV$^2$ and $0.02 $GeV$^2 < |t| < 0.3 $GeV$^2$, where t is the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The measured upper limits for the cross sections, $\sigma(\gamma p\to^{\hspace*{-2ex}\mathbb{O}}\pi^{\circ}N^{\ast}) < 39$ nb, $\sigma(\gamma p\to^{\hspace*{-2ex}\mathbb{O}} f_2(1270)X) < 16$ nb and $\sigma(\gamma p\to^{\hspace*{-2ex}\mathbb{O}} a_2(1320)X) < 96$ nb, all at 95% CL, are lower than the predictions by a theoretical model. 33. An analysis of weather warnings in Sweden from a compound hazard point of view

Abstract: One way to approach multiple or compound natural hazards is from the perspective of recipients of weather warnings, e.g. rescue services. A single warning may be difficult enough to handle but multiple weather warnings on the same day and in the same region may substantially increase the pressure on resources and preparedness.In this study we have made a spatio-temporal analysis of 10 years of weather warnings in Sweden, with the main objective to quantify and characterize cases with spatially and temporally overlapping warnings. The warnings considered include high lake level, high river flow, high ocean level, strong wind gusts, heavy snowfall, heavy rainfall, thunder and high temperature. The warnings were stored in a web based client but required substantial processing and quality control prior to the analysis. To simplify analysis, the warnings were then transformed to day and district level. Thus, even if a warning only extended over a part of the day, that day was considered a “warning day” for that specific type of warning. Spatially, Sweden is divided into 40 “warning districts”.Generally, the south-western and north-eastern parts of Sweden stand out as most prone to overlapping warnings, but with different inter-annual patterns. Most overlaps include combinations of high ocean level, high river flow and heavy rainfall or snowfall, which all may exacerbate the impact of each individual hazard. We hope the study will lead to new insights concerning the risks of compound hazards and the need for preparedness.&nbsp, The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract: This article proposes a novel validated de-embedding approach to S-parameter measurement. This de-embedding approach benefits from the fully symmetric nature of the designed tapered transmission line test fixture and requires only a Through (THRU) standard. A key point of this approach is solving for a new coefficient Rx, which is defined to take into account the inherent physical properties of the transmission network. Compared to previous thru-only de-embedding methods, the present approach is applicable to a significantly wider range of frequencies and offers more flexibility in the design of the test fixture. In addition, this approach simplifies multi-port configurations compared to traditional complicated calibration methods such as TRL. For validation purposes, symmetric two and four port tapered THRUs were designed and measured. This novel de-embedding approach is verified by comparison measurements with the classic TRL method or the HFSS simulation and shows a very good agreement.

Abstract: The paper presents prominent Nordic contributions to stochastic methods in hydrology and water resources during the previous 50 years. The development in methods from analysis of stationary and independent hydrological events to include non-stationarity, risk analysis, big data, operational research and climate change impacts is hereby demonstrated. The paper is divided into four main sections covering flood frequency and drought analyses, assessment of rainfall extremes, stochastic approaches to water resources management and approaches to climate change and adaptation efforts. It is intended as a review paper referring to a rich selection of internationally published papers authored by Nordic hydrologists or hydrologists from abroad working in a Nordic country or in cooperation with Nordic hydrologists. Emerging trends in needs and methodologies are highlighted in the conclusions.

Abstract: The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm (multifold), which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application.
