Chiral helimagnetism was investigated in transition-metal intercalated dichalcogenide single crystals of MnTa$_3$S$_6$. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments revealed the presence of harmonic chiral helimagnetic order, which was successfully detected as a pair of satellite peaks in the SANS pattern. The magnetization data are also supportive of the presence of chiral soliton lattice (CSL) phase in MnTa$_3$S$_6$. The observed features are summarized in the phase diagram of MnTa$_3$S$_6$, which is in strong contrast with that observed in other dichalcogenides such as CrNb$_3$S$_6$ and CrTa$_3$S$_6$. The presence of the remanent state provides tunable capability of the number of chiral solitons at zero magnetic field in the CSL system, which may be useful for memory device applications., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

In ferromagnets, electric current generally induces transverse Hall voltage in proportion to magnetization (anomalous Hall effect), and it is frequently used for electrical readout of the up and down spin states. While these properties are usually not expected in antiferromagnets, recent theoretical studies predicted that non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order with finite scalar spin chirality (i.e. solid angle spanned by neighboring spins) can often induce large spontaneous Hall effect even without net magnetization or external magnetic field. This phenomenon, i.e. spontaneous topological Hall effect, can potentially be used for the efficient electrical readout of the antiferromagnetic states, but its experimental verification has long been elusive due to the lack of appropriate materials hosting such exotic magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of all-in-all-out type non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order in triangular lattice compounds CoTa3S6 and CoNb3S6, by performing the detailed magnetic structure analysis based on polarized neutron scattering experiments as well as systematic first-principles calculations. These compounds are reported to host unconventionally large spontaneous Hall effect despite their vanishingly small net magnetization, and our analysis revealed that it can be well explained in terms of topological Hall effect, which originates from the fictitious magnetic field associated with scalar spin chirality in non-coplanar antiferromagnetic orders. The present results indicate that the scalar spin chirality mechanism can offer a promising route to realize giant spontaneous Hall response even in compensated antiferromagnets, and highlight intercalated van der Waals magnets as an unique quasi-two-dimensional material platform to enable various nontrivial manner of electrical reading and possible writing of non-coplanar antiferromagnetic domains., Comment: to appear in Nature Physics

Spin fluctuation in LiV2O4 is revisited by examining the earlier result of muon spin rotation/ relaxation measurements. Instead of a relationship for the localized electron limit, one for itinerant electron systems between muon depolarization rate and spin fluctuation rate ({\nu}_D) is employed to re-analyze data, which reveals that {\nu}D varies linearly with temperature ({\nu}_D {\propto} T) over a range 10^8-10^{12} /s for 0.02 {\le} T < 102 K. Such a linear-T behavior as well as the magnitude of {\nu}_D is fully consistent with that of the magnetic relaxation rate previously observed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), demonstrating that {\mu}SR and INS have a common time window over the fluctuation spectrum. The linear-T dependence of {\nu}_D is understood as a specific feature predicted by a Hubbard model for intersecting one-dimensional (1D) chains. This quasi-1D character, which is co-existent with enhanced uniform susceptibility at low temperatures, supports the scenario of 1D-to-3D crossover for the microscopic origin of heavy-fermion behavior in LiV2O4., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Zero-field muon spin relaxation experiments have been carried out in the Pr(Os_{1-x}Ru_x)_4Sb_12 and Pr_{1-y}La_yOs_4Sb_12 alloy systems to investigate broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state, signaled by the onset of a spontaneous static local magnetic field B_s. In both alloy series B_s initially decreases linearly with solute concentration. Ru doping is considerably more efficient than La doping, with a ~50% faster initial decrease. The data suggest that broken TRS is suppressed for Ru concentration x >~ 0.6, but persists for essentially all La concentrations. The internal magnetic field distribution in a mixed state of a cuprate superconductor, Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ ($T_{\rm c}\simeq28.5$ K, near the optimal doping), was measured by muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) technique up to 60 kOe. The $\mu$SR linewidth $\Lambda(B)$ which exhibits excess broadening at higher fields ($B>5$ kOe) due to field-induced magnetism (FIM), is described by a relation, $\Lambda(B)\propto\sqrt{B}$. This suggests that the orbital current and associated quasiparticle excitation plays predominant roles in stabilizing the quasistatic correlation. Moreover, a slowing down of the vortex fluctuation sets in well above $T_{\rm c}$, as inferred from the trace of FIM observed up to $\sim80$ K, and develops continuously without a singularity at $T_{\rm c}$ as the temperature decreases.

Coherence factors are a hallmark of superconductivity as a pair-condensation phenomenon. When electrons pair, quasi-particles develop an acute sensitivity to different types of scattering potential, described by the appearance of coherence factors in the scattering amplitudes. While the effects of coherence factors are well established in isotropic superconductors, they are much harder to detect in their anisotropic counterparts, such as high-Tc cuprates. Here we demonstrate a new approach which highlights the momentum-dependent coherence factors in Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2. Using Fourier-transform scanning tunnelling spectroscopy to detect quasi-particle interference effects, our experiments reveal a magnetic-field dependence in quasi-particle scattering which is sensitive to the sign of the anisotropic gap. This result can be understood in terms of d-wave coherence factors and it exposes the role of vortices as quasi-particle scattering centers. We also show that a magnetic field gives rise to an enlarged gapless region around the gap nodes., Comment: 19 pages, 1 table, 4 figures. High-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity is ubiquitous in the cuprates containing CuO2 planes but each cuprate has its own character. The study of the material dependence of the d-wave superconducting gap (SG) should provide important insights into the mechanism of high-Tc. However, because of the 'pseudogap' phenomenon, it is often unclear whether the energy gaps observed by spectroscopic techniques really represent the SG. Here, we report spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (SI-STM) studies of nearly-optimally-doped Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 (Na-CCOC) with Tc = 25 ~ 28 K. They enable us to observe the quasi-particle interference (QPI) effect in this material, through which unambiguous new information on the SG is obtained. The analysis of QPI in Na-CCOC reveals that the SG dispersion near the gap node is almost identical to that of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (Bi2212) at the same doping level, while Tc of Bi2212 is 3 times higher than that of Na-CCOC. We also find that SG in Na-CCOC is confined in narrower energy and momentum ranges than Bi2212. This explains at least in part the remarkable material dependence of Tc, Comment: 13pages, 4figs

We have measured the temperature dependence and magnitude of the superfluid density $\rho_{\rm s}(T)$ via the magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ in PuCoGa$_5$ (nominal critical temperature $T_{c0} = 18.5$ K) using the muon spin rotation technique in order to investigate the symmetry of the order parameter, and to study the effects of aging on the superconducting properties of a radioactive material. The same single crystals were measured after 25 days ($T_c = 18.25$ K) and 400 days ($T_c = 15.0$ K) of aging at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described in both materials by a model using d-wave gap symmetry. The magnitude of the muon spin relaxation rate $\sigma$ in the aged sample, $\sigma\propto 1/\lambda^2\propto\rho_s/m^*$, where $m^*$ is the effective mass, is reduced by about 70% compared to fresh sample. This indicates that the scattering from self-irradiation induced defects is not in the limit of the conventional Abrikosov-Gor'kov pair-breaking theory, but rather in the limit of short coherence length (about 2 nm in PuCoGa$_5$) superconductivity., Comment: 11 pages

Zero- and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation (MuSR) experiments have been carried out in the alloy series Pr(Os1-xRux)4Sb12 and Pr1-yLayOs4Sb12 to elucidate the anomalous dynamic muon spin relaxation observed in these materials. The damping rate associated with this relaxation varies with temperature, applied magnetic field, and dopant concentrations x and y in a manner consistent with the ``hyperfine enhancement'' of 141Pr nuclear spins first discussed by Bleaney in 1973. This mechanism arises from Van Vleck-like admixture of magnetic Pr3+ crystalline-electric-field-split excited states into the nonmagnetic singlet ground state by the nuclear hyperfine coupling, thereby increasing the strengths of spin-spin interactions between 141Pr and muon spins and within the 141Pr spin system. We find qualitative agreement with this scenario, and conclude that electronic spin fluctuations are not directly involved in the dynamic muon spin relaxation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Local magnetic field distribution B(r) in the mixed state of a boride superconductor, YB6, is studied by muon spin rotation (muSR). A comparative analysis using the modified London model and Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model indicates that the GL model exhibits better agreement with muSR data at higher fields, thereby demonstrating the importance of reproducing the field profile near the vortex cores when the intervortex distance becomes closer to the GL coherence length. The temperature and field dependence of magnetic penetration depth ($\lambda$) does not show any hint of nonlocal effect nor of low-lying quasiparticle excitation. This suggests that the strong coupling of electrons to the rattling motion of Y ions in the boron cage suggested by bulk measurements gives rise to a conventional superconductivity with isotropic s-wave pairing. We report on the muon spin rotation/relaxation study of a pyrochlore oxide, Cd2Os2O7, which exhibits a metal-insulator (MI) transition at T_{MI}~225 K without structural phase transition. It reveals strong spin fluctuation (>10^8/s) below the MI transition, suggesting a predominant role of geometrical spin frustration amongst Os^{5+} ions. Meanwhile, upon further cooling, a static spin density wave discontinuously develops below T_{SDW}~150 K. These observations strongly suggest the occurrence of an anomalous magnetic transition and associated change in the local spin dynamics in undistorted pyrochlore antiferromagnet., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The response of vortex state to the magnetic field in Nb3Sn is probed using muon spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transformation of vortex structure between hexagonal and squared lattice is observed over a relatively low field range of 2-3 Tesla. The gradual increase of the magnetic penetration depth with increasing field provides microscopic evidence for anisotropic (or multi-gapped) s-wave pairing suggested by the Raman scattering experiment. Local magnetic fields in a molecule-based optically chiral magnet [Cr(CN)$_6$][Mn($S$)-pnH(H$_2$O)](H$_2$O) (GN-S) and its enantiomer (GN-R) are studied by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation (muSR). Detailed analysis of muon precession signals under zero field observed below T_c supports the average magnetic structure suggested by neutron powder diffraction. Moreover, comparison of muSR spectra between GN-S and GN-R suggests that they are a pair of complete optical isomers in terms of both crystallographic and magnetic structure. Strong correlation between field-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity is demonstrated for an electron-doped cuprate superconductor, Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ (PLCCO). In addition to the specimen with $x=0.11$ (which is close to the AF phase boundary, $x\simeq0.10$), we show that the one with $x=0.15$ ($T_c\simeq16$ K at zero field) also exhibits the field-induced AF order with a reduced magnitude of the induced moment. The uniform muon Knight shift at a low magnetic field ($\sim10^2$ Oe) indicates that the AF order is not localized within the cores of flux lines, which is in a marked contrast with theoretical prediction for hole-doped cuprates. We report on the muon Knight shift measurement in single crystals of LiV2O4. Contrary to what is anticipated for the heavy-fermion state based on the Kondo mechanism, the presence of inhomogeneous local magnetic moments is demonstrated by the broad distribution of the Knight shift at temperatures well below the presumed "Kondo temperature" ($T^*\simeq 30$ K). Moreover, a significant fraction ($\simeq10$ %) of the specimen gives rise to a second component which is virtually non-magnetic. We report on the magnetic phase diagram of a hole-doped cuprate Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$, which is free from buckling of CuO$_2$ planes, determined by muon spin rotation and relaxation. It is characterized by a quasi-static spin glass-like phase over a range of sodium concentration ($0.05\leq x\leq 0.12$), which is held between long range antiferromagnetic (AF) phase ($x\leq 0.02$) and superconducting phase where the system is non-magnetic for $x\geq 0.15$. The obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees well with that commonly found for hole-doped high-\tc cuprates, strongly suggesting that the incomplete suppression of the AF order for $x>0.02$ is an essential feature of the hole-doped cuprates., Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Phys. We report on the magnetic penetration depth, lambda, in a type II superconductor NbB_{2+x} determined by muon spin rotation method. We show in the sample with x=0.1 that lambda at 2.0 K is independent of an applied magnetic field. This suggests that the superconducting order parameter in NbB_{2+x} is isotropic, as expected for conventional BCS superconductors. Meanwhile, the superconducting carrier density (proportional to lambda^{-2}) exhibits an interesting tendency of increase with increasing T_c (where T_c varies with x). We report the local magnetic response of an electron-doped cuprate superconductor, Pr$_{0.89}$LaCe$_{0.11}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_c\simeq26$ K), studied by muon spin rotation (\msr) over a field range from 200 Oe to 50 kOe. In the paramagnetic state, the muon Knight shift along the crystal c-axis ($K_\mu^z$) is proportional to the in-plane susceptibility $\chi_{ab}$. More surprisingly, $K_\mu^z$ is strongly enhanced by the occurrence of superconductivity (below $\sim$40 kOe), changing its sign from positive to negative around $\sim1$ kOe with increasing field. This finding can be understood by considering the weak polarization of Pr ions due to superexchange interaction with the antiferromagnetic Cu sublattice, which coexists with superconductivity., Comment: 4 pages, 4figures, submitted to J. The temperature ($T$) and magnetic field ($H$) dependence of the magnetic penetration depth, $\lambda(T,H)$, in Ca(Al$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$)$_2$ exhibits significant deviation from that expected for conventional BCS superconductors. In particular, it is inferred from a field dependence of $\lambda(H)$ ($\propto H$) at 2.0 K that the quasiparticle excitation is strongly enhanced by the Doppler shift. This suggests that the superconducting order parameter in Ca(Al$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$)$_2$ is characterized by a small energy scale $\Delta_S/k_B\le 2$ K originating either from anisotropy or multi-gap structure., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Magnetic penetration depth ($\lambda$) in a pyrochlore superconductor KOs$_2$O$_6$ was studied by means of muon spin rotation (\msr). The temperature dependence of transverse spin relaxation rate, which is proportional to $\lambda ^{-2}$, exhibits a considerable deviation from that expected for the empirical two-fluid model ($\propto T^4$), rather obeying a $T^2$-tendency. Furthermore, $\lambda$ apparently increases with increasing applied field, suggesting the presence of nonlinear and nonlocal effects. A paramagnetic muonium (Mu) state with an extremely small hyperfine parameter was observed for the first time in single-crystalline GaN below 25 K. It has a highly anisotropic hyperfine structure with axial symmetry along the [0001] direction, suggesting that it is located either at a nitrogen-antibonding or a bond-centered site oriented parallel to the c-axis. Its small ionization energy (=< 14 meV) and small hyperfine parameter (--10^{-4} times the vacuum value) indicate that muonium in one of its possible sites produces a shallow state, raising the possibility that the analogous hydrogen center could be a source of n-type conductivity in as-grown GaN., Comment: 4 figures, to be published in Phys. We report on muon spin relaxation measurements of the 4f^2-based heavy-fermion superconductor filled-skutterudite PrOs4Sb12. The results reveal the spontaneous appearance of static internal magnetic fields below the superconducting transition temperature, providing unambiguous evidence for the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. A discussion is made on which of the spin or orbital component of Cooper pairs carries a nonzero momentum., Comment: 5 pages with 3 figures

The magnetic field distribution in the vortex state of YNi2B2C has been probed by muon spin rotation (muSR). The analysis based on the London model with nonlocal corrections shows that the vortex lattice has changed from hexagonal to square with increasing magnetic field H. At low fields the vortex core radius, rho_v(H), decreases with increasing H much steeper than what is expected from the sqrt(H) behavior of the Sommerfeld constant gamma(H), strongly suggesting that the anomaly in gamma(H) primarily arises from the quasiparticle excitations outside the vortex cores., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
