Search

A southwest region of the Carina nebula was observed with the Suzaku observatory for 47 ks in 2010 December. This region shows distinctively soft X-ray emission in the Chandra campaign observations. Suzaku clearly detects the diffuse emission above known foreground and background components between 0.4-5 keV at the surface brightness of 3.3x10^-14 erg s^{-1} arcmin^{-2}. The spectrum requires two plasma emission components with kT~0.2 and 0.5 keV, which suffer interstellar absorption of N_H~1.9x10^{21} cm^{-2}. Multiple absorption models assuming two temperature plasmas at ionization equilibrium or non-equilibrium are tested but there is no significant difference in terms of chi^2/d.o.f.. These plasma temperatures are similar to those of the central and eastern parts of the Carina nebula measured in earlier Suzaku observations, but the surface brightness of the hot component is significantly lower than those of the other regions. This means that these two plasma components are physically separated and have different origins. The elemental abundances of O, Ne and Mg with respect to Fe favor that the diffuse plasma originates from core-collapsed supernovae or massive stellar winds., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report on results of imaging and spectral studies of X-ray emission from Jupiter observed by Suzaku. In 2006 Suzaku had found diffuse X-ray emission in $1\unicode{x2013}5$ keV associated with Jovian inner radiation belts. It has been suggested that the emission is caused by the inverse-Compton scattering by ultra-relativistic electrons ($ \sim 50 $ MeV) in Jupiter's magnetosphere. To confirm the existence of this emission and to understand its relation to the solar activity, we conducted an additional Suzaku observation in 2014 around the maximum of the 24th solar cycle. As a result, we successfully found again the diffuse emission around Jupiter in $1\unicode{x2013}5$ keV and also point-like emission in $0.4\unicode{x2013}1$ keV. The luminosity of the point-like emission which was probably composed of solar X-ray scattering, charge exchange, or auroral bremsstrahlung emission increased by a factor of $ \sim 5$ with respect to 2006, most likely due to an increase of the solar activity. The diffuse emission spectrum in the $1\unicode{x2013}5$ keV band was well-fitted with a flat power-law function ($ \Gamma = 1.4 \pm 0.1 $) as in the past observation, which supported the inverse-Compton scattering hypothesis. However, its spatial distribution changed from $ \sim 12 \times 4 $ Jovian radius (Rj) to $ \sim 20 \times 7 $ Rj. The luminosity of the diffuse emission increased by a smaller factor of $ \sim 3 $. This indicates that the diffuse emission is not simply responding to the solar activity, which is also known to cause little effect on the distribution of high-energy electrons around Jupiter. Further sensitive study of the spatial and spectral distributions of the diffuse hard X-ray emission is important to understand how high-energy particles are accelerated in Jupiter's magnetosphere., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Suzaku detected an enhancement of soft X-ray background associated with solar eruptions on 2013 April 14-15. The solar eruptions were accompanied by an M6.5 solar flare and a coronal mass ejection with magnetic flux ropes. The enhanced soft X-ray background showed a slight variation in half a day and then a clear one in a few hours. The former spectrum was composed of oxygen emission lines, while the later one was characterized by a series of emission lines from highly ionized carbon to silicon. The soft X-ray enhancement originated from geocoronal solar wind charge exchange. However, there appeared to be no significant time correlation with the solar wind proton flux measured by the ACE and WIND satellites. From other solar wind signatures, we considered that an interplanetary shock associated with the coronal mass ejection and a turbulent sheath immediately behind the shock compressed the ambient solar wind ions and then resulted in the soft X-ray enhancement. Furthermore, the enriched emission lines were presumed to be due to an unusual set of ion abundances and ionization states within the coronal mass ejection. We found a better time correlation with the solar wind alpha flux rather than the solar wind proton flux. Our results suggest that the solar wind proton flux is not always a good indicator of geocoronal solar wind charge exchange, especially associated with coronal mass ejections. We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1 $\pm$ 10.6)% and, the polarization angle is 110.7$^o$ + 13.2 / $-$13.0$^o$ in the energy range of 60--160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. The polarization angle measured by SGD is about one sigma deviation with the projected spin axis of the pulsar, 124.0$^o$ $\pm$0.1$^o$., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5$-$0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of $\Gamma_1=1.74\pm0.02$ and $\Gamma_2=2.14\pm0.01$ below and above the break at $7.1\pm0.3$ keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result ($\sim9.0$ keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833$-$1034 with the HXI and SGD. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 $\sigma$. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. The present paper investigates the temperature structure of the X-ray emitting plasma in the core of the Perseus cluster using the 1.8--20.0 keV data obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi Observatory. A series of four observations were carried out, with a total effective exposure time of 338 ks and covering a central region $\sim7'$ in diameter. The SXS was operated with an energy resolution of $\sim$5 eV (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV. Not only fine structures of K-shell lines in He-like ions but also transitions from higher principal quantum numbers are clearly resolved from Si through Fe. This enables us to perform temperature diagnostics using the line ratios of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and to provide the first direct measurement of the excitation temperature and ionization temperature in the Perseus cluster. The observed spectrum is roughly reproduced by a single temperature thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium, but detailed line ratio diagnostics reveal slight deviations from this approximation. In particular, the data exhibit an apparent trend of increasing ionization temperature with increasing atomic mass, as well as small differences between the ionization and excitation temperatures for Fe, the only element for which both temperatures can be measured. The best-fit two-temperature models suggest a combination of 3 and 5 keV gas, which is consistent with the idea that the observed small deviations from a single temperature approximation are due to the effects of projection of the known radial temperature gradient in the cluster core along the line of sight. Comparison with the Chandra/ACIS and the XMM-Newton/RGS results on the other hand suggests that additional lower-temperature components are present in the ICM but not detectable by Hitomi SXS given its 1.8--20 keV energy band., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 9 tables. The Hitomi SXS spectrum of the Perseus cluster, with $\sim$5 eV resolution in the 2-9 keV band, offers an unprecedented benchmark of the atomic modeling and database for hot collisional plasmas. It reveals both successes and challenges of the current atomic codes. The latest versions of AtomDB/APEC (3.0.8), SPEX (3.03.00), and CHIANTI (8.0) all provide reasonable fits to the broad-band spectrum, and are in close agreement on best-fit temperature, emission measure, and abundances of a few elements such as Ni. For the Fe abundance, the APEC and SPEX measurements differ by 16%, which is 17 times higher than the statistical uncertainty. This is mostly attributed to the differences in adopted collisional excitation and dielectronic recombination rates of the strongest emission lines. We further investigate and compare the sensitivity of the derived physical parameters to the astrophysical source modeling and instrumental effects. The Hitomi results show that an accurate atomic code is as important as the astrophysical modeling and instrumental calibration aspects. Substantial updates of atomic databases and targeted laboratory measurements are needed to get the current codes ready for the data from the next Hitomi-level mission., Comment: 46 pages, 25 figures, 11 tables. We present Hitomi observations of N132D, a young, X-ray bright, O-rich core-collapse supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Despite a very short observation of only 3.7 ks, the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) easily detects the line complexes of highly ionized S K and Fe K with 16-17 counts in each. The Fe feature is measured for the first time at high spectral resolution. Based on the plausible assumption that the Fe K emission is dominated by He-like ions, we find that the material responsible for this Fe emission is highly redshifted at ~800 km/s compared to the local LMC interstellar medium (ISM), with a 90% credible interval of 50-1500 km/s if a weakly informative prior is placed on possible line broadening. This indicates (1) that the Fe emission arises from the supernova ejecta, and (2) that these ejecta are highly asymmetric, since no blue-shifted component is found. The S K velocity is consistent with the local LMC ISM, and is likely from swept-up ISM material. These results are consistent with spatial mapping that shows the He-like Fe concentrated in the interior of the remnant and the S tracing the outer shell. The results also show that even with a very small number of counts, direct velocity measurements from Doppler-shifted lines detected in extended objects like supernova remnants are now possible. Thanks to the very low SXS background of ~1 event per spectral resolution element per 100 ks, such results are obtainable during short pointed or slew observations with similar instruments. This highlights the power of high-spectral-resolution imaging observations, and demonstrates the new window that has been opened with Hitomi and will be greatly widened with future missions such as the X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (XARM) and Athena., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 1 table. We report a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318-4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of N_H~10^{24} cm^{-2}. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission. For physical and geometrical insight into the nature of the reprocessing material, we utilize the high spectroscopic resolving power of the X-ray microcalorimeter (the soft X-ray spectrometer; SXS) and the wide-band sensitivity by the soft and hard X-ray imager (SXI and HXI) aboard Hitomi. Even though photon counts are limited due to unintended off-axis pointing, the SXS spectrum resolves Fe K{\alpha_1} and K{\alpha_2} lines and puts strong constraints on the line centroid and width. The line width corresponds to the velocity of 160^{+300}_{-70} km s^{-1}. This represents the most accurate, and smallest, width measurement of this line made so far from any X-ray binary, much less than the Doppler broadening and shift expected from speeds which are characteristic of similar systems. Combined with the K-shell edge energy measured by the SXI and HXI spectra, the ionization state of Fe is estimated to be in the range of Fe I--IV. Considering the estimated ionization parameter and the distance between the X-ray source and the absorber, the density and thickness of the materials are estimated. The extraordinarily strong absorption and the absence of a Compton shoulder component is confirmed. These characteristics suggest reprocessing materials which are distributed in a narrow solid angle or scattering primarily with warm free electrons or neutral hydrogen., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The origin of the narrow Fe-K{\alpha} fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K{\alpha} line with ~5.4 {\sigma} significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H{\alpha} line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K{\alpha} line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K{\alpha} line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Extending the earlier measurements reported in Hitomi collaboration (2016, Nature, 535, 117), we examine the atmospheric gas motions within the central 100~kpc of the Perseus cluster using observations obtained with the Hitomi satellite. After correcting for the point spread function of the telescope and using optically thin emission lines, we find that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the hot gas is remarkably low and mostly uniform. The velocity dispersion reaches maxima of approximately 200~km~s$^{-1}$ toward the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) and toward the AGN inflated north-western `ghost' bubble. Elsewhere within the observed region, the velocity dispersion appears constant around 100~km~s$^{-1}$. We also detect a velocity gradient with a 100~km~s$^{-1}$ amplitude across the cluster core, consistent with large-scale sloshing of the core gas. If the observed gas motions are isotropic, the kinetic pressure support is less than 10\% of the thermal pressure support in the cluster core. The well-resolved optically thin emission lines have Gaussian shapes, indicating that the turbulent driving scale is likely below 100~kpc, which is consistent with the size of the AGN jet inflated bubbles. We also report the first measurement of the ion temperature in the intracluster medium, which we find to be consistent with the electron temperature. Thanks to its high spectral resolution (~5 eV at 6 keV), the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on board Hitomi enables us to measure the detailed structure of spatially resolved emission lines from highly ionized ions in galaxy clusters for the first time. In this series of papers, using the SXS we have measured the velocities of gas motions, metallicities and the multi-temperature structure of the gas in the core of the Perseus cluster. Here, we show that when inferring physical properties from line emissivities in systems like Perseus, the resonant scattering (RS) effect should be taken into account. In the Hitomi waveband, RS mostly affects the FeXXV He$\alpha$ line ($w$) - the strongest line in the spectrum. The flux measured by Hitomi in this line is suppressed by a factor ~1.3 in the inner ~30 kpc, compared to predictions for an optically thin plasma; the suppression decreases with the distance from the center. The $w$ line also appears slightly broader than other lines from the same ion. The observed distortions of the $w$ line flux, shape and distance dependence are all consistent with the expected effect of the resonant scattering in the Perseus core. By measuring the ratio of fluxes in optically thick ($w$) and thin (FeXXV forbidden, He$\beta$, Ly$\alpha$) lines, and comparing these ratios with predictions from Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations, the velocities of gas motions have been obtained. The results are consistent with the direct measurements of gas velocities from line broadening described elsewhere in this series, although the systematic and statistical uncertainties remain significant. Further improvements in the predictions of line emissivities in plasma models, and deeper observations with future X-ray missions will enable RS measurements to provide powerful constraints on the amplitude and anisotropy of clusters gas motions., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figure, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The results of Suzaku observations of the outskirts of Abell 3395 including a large-scale structure filament toward Abell 3391 are presented. We measured temperature and abundance distributions from the southern outskirt of Abell 3395 to the north at the virial radius, where a filament structure has been found in the former X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect observations between Abell 3391 and 3395. The overall temperature structure is consistent with the universal profile proposed by Okabe et al.(2014) for relaxed clusters except for the filament region. A hint of the ICM heating is found between the two clusters, which might be due to the interaction of them in the early phase of a cluster merger. Although we obtained relatively low metal abundance of $Z=0.169^{+0.164+0.009+0.018 }_{-0.150-0.004-0.015 }$ solar, where the first, second, and third errors are statistical, cosmic X-ray background systematic, and non X-ray background systematic, respectively, at the virial radius in the filament, our results are still consistent with the former results of other clusters ($Z \sim 0.3$ solar) within errors. Therefore, our results are also consistent with the early enrichment scenario. We estimated Compton $y$ parameters only from X-ray results in the region between Abell 3391 and 3395 assuming a simple geometry. They are smaller than the previous SZ results with Planck satellite. The difference could be attributed to a more elaborate geometry such as a filament inclined to the line-of-sight direction, or underestimation of the X-ray temperature because of the unresolved multi-temperature structures or undetected hot X-ray emission of the shock heated gas., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present the results of Suzaku and Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster RXC J1053.7+5453 ($z=0.0704$), which contains a radio relic. The radio relic is located at the distance of $\sim 540$ kpc from the X-ray peak toward the west. We measured the temperature of this cluster for the first time. The resultant temperature in the center is $ \sim 1.3$ keV, which is lower than the value expected from the X-ray luminosity - temperature and the velocity dispersion - temperature relation. Though we did not find a significant temperature jump at the outer edge of the relic, our results suggest that the temperature decreases outward across the relic. Assuming the existence of the shock at the relic, its Mach number becomes $M \simeq 1.4 $. A possible spatial variation of Mach number along the relic is suggested. Additionally, a sharp surface brightness edge is found at the distance of $\sim 160$ kpc from the X-ray peak toward the west in the Chandra image. We performed X-ray spectral and surface brightness analyses around the edge with Suzaku and Chandra data, respectively. The obtained surface brightness and temperature profiles suggest that this edge is not a shock but likely a cold front. Alternatively, it cannot be ruled out that thermal pressure is really discontinuous across the edge. In this case, if the pressure across the surface brightness edge is in equilibrium, other forms of pressure sources, such as cosmic-rays, are necessary. We searched for the non-thermal inverse Compton component in the relic region. Assuming the photon index $ \Gamma = 2.0$, the resultant upper limit of the flux is $1.9 \times 10^{-14} {\rm erg \ s^{-1} \ cm^{-2}}$ for $4.50 \times 10^{-3} {\rm \ deg^{2}}$ area in the 0.3-10 keV band, which implies that the lower limit of magnetic field strength becomes $ 0.7 {\rm \ \mu G}$., Comment: 13page, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1508.05845

To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 -- 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 -- 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission.The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1,000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main or inter-pulse phases.All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main- or inter- pulse GRPs are 22\% or 80\% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2 -- 300 keV band.The values become 25\% or 110\% for main or inter-pulse GRPs, respectively, when the phase width is restricted into the 0.03 phase.Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and the 70-300 keV are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports.Numerically, the upper limits of main- and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) $\times 10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magnetosphere and the number of photon-emitting particles temporally increases.However, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a $>0.02$\% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The Crab nebula originated from a core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion observed in 1054 A.D. When viewed as a supernova remnant (SNR), it has an anomalously low observed ejecta mass and kinetic energy for an Fe-core collapse SN. Intensive searches were made for a massive shell that solves this discrepancy, but none has been detected. An alternative idea is that the SN1054 is an electron-capture (EC) explosion with a lower explosion energy by an order of magnitude than Fe-core collapse SNe. In the X-rays, imaging searches were performed for the plasma emission from the shell in the Crab outskirts to set a stringent upper limit to the X-ray emitting mass. However, the extreme brightness of the source hampers access to its vicinity. We thus employed spectroscopic technique using the X-ray micro-calorimeter onboard the Hitomi satellite. By exploiting its superb energy resolution, we set an upper limit for emission or absorption features from yet undetected thermal plasma in the 2-12 keV range. We also re-evaluated the existing Chandra and XMM-Newton data. By assembling these results, a new upper limit was obtained for the X-ray plasma mass of <~ 1Mo for a wide range of assumed shell radius, size, and plasma temperature both in and out of the collisional equilibrium. To compare with the observation, we further performed hydrodynamic simulations of the Crab SNR for two SN models (Fe-core versus EC) under two SN environments (uniform ISM versus progenitor wind). We found that the observed mass limit can be compatible with both SN models if the SN environment has a low density of <~ 0.03 cm-3 (Fe core) or <~ 0.1 cm-3 (EC) for the uniform density, or a progenitor wind density somewhat less than that provided by a mass loss rate of 10-5 Mo yr-1 at 20 km s-1 for the wind environment., Comment: PASJ in press. A detailed search for emission and absorption lines and assessing their upper limits are performed for Suzaku data. The method utilizes a matched-filtering approach to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio for a given energy resolution, which could be applicable to many types of line search. We first applied it to well-known AGN spectra that have been reported to have ultra-fast outflows, and find that our results are consistent with previous findings at the ~3{\sigma} level. We proceeded to search for emission and absorption features in the two bright magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J1708-4009, applying the filtering method to Suzaku data. We found that neither source showed any significant indication of line features, even using long Suzaku observations and dividing their spectra into spin phases. The upper limits on the equivalent width of emission/absorption lines are constrained to be a few eV at ~1 keV, and a few hundreds of eV at ~10 keV. This strengthens previous reports that persistently bright magnetars do not show proton cyclotron absorption features in soft X-rays and, even if they exist, they would be broadened or much weaker than below the detection limit of X-ray CCD., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally-bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. Knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, which dominates in mass over stars in a cluster, is a crucial missing ingredient. It can enable new insights into mechanical energy injection by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for the determination of cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50 million K diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The Active Galactic Nucleus of the central galaxy NGC1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These likely induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas preventing runaway radiative cooling; a process known as Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback. Here we report on Hitomi X-ray observations of the Perseus cluster core, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere where the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164+/-10 km/s in a region 30-60 kpc from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150+/-70 km/s is found across the 60 kpc image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is 4% or less of the thermodynamic pressure, with large scale shear at most doubling that estimate. We present the results of Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster 1RXS J0603.3+4214 with "toothbrush" radio relic. Although a shock with Mach number $M \simeq 4$ is expected at the outer edge of the relic from the radio observation, our temperature measurements of the intracluster medium indicate a weaker temperature difference than what is expected. The Mach number estimated from the temperature difference at the outer edge of the relic is $M \simeq 1.5$, which is significantly lower than the value estimated from the radio data even considering both statistical and systematic errors. This suggests that a diffusive shock acceleration theory in the linear test particle regime, which is commonly used to link the radio spectral index to the Mach number, is invalid for this relic. We also measured the temperature difference across the western part of the relic, where a shock with $M \simeq 1.6$ is suggested from the X-ray surface brightness analysis of the XMM-Newton data, and obtained consistent results in an independent way. We searched for the non-thermal inverse Compton component in the relic region and the resultant upper limit on the flux is $2.4 \times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 0.3-10 keV band. The cluster of galaxies MS 1512.4+3647 (z=0.372) was observed with Suzaku for 270 ks. Besides the Fe abundance, the abundances of Mg, Si, S, and Ni are separately determined for the first time in a medium redshift cluster (z>0.3). The derived abundance pattern of MS 1512.4+3647 is consistent with those of nearby clusters, suggesting that the system has similar contributions from supernovae (SNe) Ia and SNe II to nearby clusters. The number ratio of SNe II to SNe Ia is $\sim3$. The estimated total numbers of both SNe II and SNe Ia against gas mass indicate similar correlation with those for the nearby clusters. The abundance results of MS 1512.4+3647 is consistent with the standard scenario that the SN II rate history roughly follows the star-formation history which has a peak at 1

The backbone of the large-scale structure of the Universe is determined by processes on a cosmological scale and by the gravitational interaction of the dominant dark matter. However, the mobile baryon population shapes the appearance of these structures. Theory predicts that most of the baryons reside in vast unvirialized filamentary structures that connect galaxy groups and clusters, but the observational evidence is currently lacking. Because the majority of the baryons are supposed to exist in a large-scale, hot and dilute gaseous phase, X-rays provide the ideal tool to progress our understanding. This White Paper, submitted to the recent ESA call for science themes to define its future large missions, advocates the need for a transformational leap in our understanding of two key questions in astrophysics: 1) How does ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures that we see today? 2) How do black holes grow and shape the Universe? Hot gas in clusters, groups and the intergalactic medium dominates the baryonic content of the local Universe. To understand the astrophysical processes responsible for the formation and assembly of these large structures, it is necessary to measure their physical properties and evolution. This requires spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a factor 10 increase in both telescope throughput and spatial resolving power compared to currently planned facilities. Feedback from supermassive black holes is an essential ingredient in this process and in most galaxy evolution models, but it is not well understood. X-ray observations can uniquely reveal the mechanisms launching winds close to black holes and determine the coupling of the energy and matter flows on larger scales. Due to the effects of feedback, a complete understanding of galaxy evolution requires knowledge of the obscured growth of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, out to the redshifts where the first galaxies form. X-ray emission is the most reliable way to reveal accreting black holes, but deep survey speed must improve by a factor ~100 over current facilities to perform a full census into the early Universe. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission provides the necessary performance (e.g. angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe. We present results of four-pointing Suzaku X-ray observations (total ~200 ks) of the intracluster medium (ICM) in the Abell 1835 galaxy cluster (kT ~ 8 keV, z = 0.253) out to the virial radius (r_vir ~ 2.9 Mpc) and beyond. Faint X-ray emission from the ICM out to r_vir is detected. The temperature gradually decreases with radius from ~8 keV in the inner region to ~2 keV at r_vir. The entropy profile is shown to flatten beyond r_500, in disagreement with the r_1.1 dependence predicted from the accretion shock heating model. The thermal pressure profile in the range 0.3r_500 < r < r_vir agrees well with that obtained from the stacked Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect observations with the Planck satellite. The hydrostatic mass profile in the cluster outskirts (r_500 < r < r_vir) falls well short of the weak lensing one derived from Subaru/Suprime-Cam observations, showing an unphysical decrease with radius. The gas mass fraction at r_vir defined with the lensing total mass agrees with the cosmic baryon fraction from the WMAP 7-year data. All these results indicate, rather than the gas-clumping effect, that the bulk of the ICM in the cluster outskirts is far from hydrostatic equilibrium and infalling matter retained some of its kinetic energy. Finally, combining with our recent Suzaku and lensing analysis of Abell 1689, a cluster of similar mass, temperature, and redshift, we show that the cluster temperature distribution in the outskirts is significantly correlated with the galaxy density field in the surrounding large-scale environment at (1-2)r_vir., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 12 tables. We report Suzaku observations of the northern half of the Hydra A cluster out to ~1.4 Mpc, reaching the virial radius. This is the first Suzaku observations of a medium-size (kT ~3 keV) cluster out to the virial radius. Two observations were conducted, north-west and north-east offsets, which continue in a filament direction and a void direction of the large-scale structure of the Universe, respectively. The X-ray emission and distribution of galaxies elongate in the filament direction. The temperature profiles in the two directions are mostly consistent with each other within the error bars and drop to 1.5 keV at 1.5 r_500. As observed by Suzaku in hot clusters, the entropy profile becomes flatter beyond r_500, in disagreement with the r^1.1 relationship that is expected from accretion shock heating models. When scaled with the average intracluster medium (ICM) temperature, the entropy profiles of clusters observed with Suzaku are universal and do not depend on system mass. The hydrostatic mass values in the void and filament directions are in good agreement, and the Navarro, Frenk, and White universal mass profile represents the hydrostatic mass distribution up to ~ 2 r_500. Beyond r_500, the ratio of gas mass to hydrostatic mass exceeds the result of the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe, and at r_100, these ratios in the filament and void directions reach 0.4 and 0.3, respectively. We discuss possible deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium at cluster outskirts. We derived radial profiles of the gasmass- to-light ratio and iron-mass-to-light ratio out to the virial radius. We report on a Suzaku measurement of the shock feature associated with the western radio relic in the merging cluster A3376. The temperature profile is characterized by an almost flat radial shape with kT ~ 4 keV within 0.5 r200 and a rise by about 1 keV inside the radio relic. Across the relic region (0.6-0.8 r200), the temperature shows a remarkable drop from about 4.7 keV to 1.3 keV. This is a clear evidence that the radio relic really corresponds to a shock front possibly caused by a past major merger. The observed sharp changes of the temperature and electron density indicate the Mach number M~3. The radial entropy profile is flatter than the prediction (r^1.1) of numerical simulations within 0.5 r200}, and becomes steeper around the relic region. These observed features and time-scale estimation consistently imply that the ICM around the radio relic has experienced a merger shock and is in the middle of the process of dynamical and thermal relaxation., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ (12 pages, 6 figures)

Suzaku performed observations of 3 regions in and around the Shapley supercluster: a region located between A3558 and A3556, at ~0.9 times the virial radii of both clusters, and two other regions at 1{\deg}and 4{\deg}away from the first pointing. The 4{\deg}-offset observation was used to evaluate the Galactic foreground emission. We did not detect significant redshifted Oxygen emission lines (O VII and O VIII) in the spectra of all three pointings, after subtracting the contribution of foreground and background emission. An upper limit for the redshifted O VIII Ka line intensity of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) is 1.5 \times 10^-7 photons s^-1 cm^-2 arcmin^-2, which corresponds to an overdensity of ~380 (Z/0.1 Z_solar)^{-1/2} (L/3 Mpc)^{-1/2}, assuming T=3\times10^6 K. We found excess continuum emission in the 1{\deg}-offset and on-filament regions, represented by thermal models with kT ~1 keV and ~2 keV, respectively. The redshifts of both 0 and that of the supercluster (0.048) are consistent with the observed spectra. The ~1 keV emission can be also fitted with Ne-rich Galactic (zero redshift) thin thermal emission. Radial intensity profile of 2 keV component suggests contribution from A3558 and A3556, but with significant steepening of the intensity slope in the outer region of A3558. Finally, we summarized the previous Suzaku search for the WHIM and discussed the feasibility of constraining the WHIM. An overdensity of < 400 can be detectable using O VII and O VIII emission lines in a range of 1.4\times10^6 K < T < 5\times10^6 K or a continuum emission in a relatively high temperature range T > 5\times10^6 K with the Suzaku XIS. The non detection with Suzaku suggests that typical line-of-sight average overdensity is < 400.

Mars was observed in X-rays during April 3-5 2008 for 82 ksec with the Japanese Suzaku observatory. Mars has been known to emit X-rays via the scattering of solar X-rays and via the charge exchange between neutral atoms in the exosphere and solar wind ions. Past theoretical studies suggest that the exospheric neutral density may vary by a factor of up to 10 over the solar cycle. To investigate a potential change of the exospheric charge exchange emission, Mars was observed with Suzaku at solar minimum. Significant signals were not detected at the position of Mars in the energy band of 0.2-5 keV. A 2 sigma upper limit of the O VII line flux in 0.5-0.65 keV was 4.3$\times10^{-5}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Comparing this upper limit to the past Chandra and XMM-Newton observations conducted near solar maximum, it was found that the exospheric density at solar minimum does not exceed that near solar maximum by more than 6-70 times., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Suzaku observed a central region and five offset regions within 0.2 r180 in the Fornax cluster, a nearby poor cluster, and XMM-Newton mapped the cluster with 15 pointings out to 0.3 r180. The distributions of O, Mg, Si, S, and Fe in the intracluster medium (ICM) were studied with Suzaku, and those of Fe and temperature were studied with XMM. The temperature of the ICM gradually decreases with radius from 1.3 keV at 0.04 r180 to 1 keV at 0.2-0.3 r180. If the new solar abundances of Lodders et al. (2003) and a single-temperature plasma model are adopted, O, Mg, Si, S, and Fe show similar abundances: 0.4-0.6 solar within 0.02-0.2 r180. This Fe abundance is similar to those at 0.1-0.2 r180 in rich clusters and other groups of galaxies. At 0.2-0.3 r180, the Fe abundance becomes 0.2-0.3 solar. A two-temperature plasma model yields ICM abundances that are higher by a factor of 1.2-1.5, but gives similar abundance ratios among O, Mg, Si, S, and Fe. The northern region has a lower ICM temperature and higher brightness and Fe abundance, whereas the southern region has a higher ICM temperature and lower brightness and Fe abundance. These results indicate that the cD galaxy may have traveled from the north because of recent dynamical evolution. The cumulative oxygen- and iron-mass-to-light ratios within 0.3 r180 are more than an order of magnitude lower than those of rich clusters and some relaxed groups of galaxies. Past dynamical evolution might have hindered the strong concentration of hot gas in the Fornax cluster's central region. Scatter in the IMLR and similarity in the element abundances in the ICM of groups and clusters of galaxies indicate early metal synthesis., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present an analysis of a Suzaku observation taken during the geomagnetic storm of 2005 August 23-24. We found time variation of diffuse soft X-ray emission when a coronal mass ejection hit Earth and caused a geomagnetic storm. The diffuse emission consists of fluorescent scattering of solar X-rays and exospheric solarwind charge exchange. The former is characterized by a neutral oxygen emission line due to strong heating of the upper atmosphere during the storm time, while the latter is dominated by a sum of C V, C VI, N VI, N VII, O VII, and O VIII emission lines due to the enhanced solar wind flux in the vicinity of the exosphere. Using the solar wind data taken with the ACE and WIND satellites,a time correlation between the solar wind and the strong O VII line flux were investigated. We estimated necessary column densities for the solar X-ray scattering and exospheric SWCX. From these results, we argue that a part of the solar wind ions enter inside the magnetosphere and cause the SWCX reaction., Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We assess the possibility to detect the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) in emission and to characterize its physical conditions and spatial distribution through spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, in the framework of the recently proposed DIOS, EDGE, Xenia, and ORIGIN missions, all of which are equipped with microcalorimeter-based detectors. For this purpose we analyze a large set of mock emission spectra, extracted from a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. These mock X-ray spectra are searched for emission features showing both the OVII K alpha triplet and OVIII Ly alpha line, which constitute a typical signature of the warm hot gas. Our analysis shows that 1 Ms long exposures and energy resolution of 2.5 eV will allow us to detect about 400 such features per deg^2 with a significance >5 sigma and reveals that these emission systems are typically associated with density ~100 above the mean. The temperature can be estimated from the line ratio with a precision of ~20%. The combined effect of contamination from other lines, variation in the level of the continuum, and degradation of the energy resolution reduces these estimates. Yet, with an energy resolution of 7 eV and all these effects taken into account, one still expects about 160 detections per deg^2. These line systems are sufficient to trace the spatial distribution of the line-emitting gas, which constitute an additional information, independent from line statistics, to constrain the poorly known cosmic chemical enrichment history and the stellar feedback processes., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, ApJ in press; revised version according to review

We studied the temperature and metal abundance distributions of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in a group of galaxies NGC 1550 observed with Suzaku. The NGC 1550 is classified as a fossil group, which have few bright member galaxies except for the central galaxy. Thus, such a type of galaxy is important to investigate how the metals are enriched to the ICM. With the Suzaku XIS instruments, we directly measured not only Si, S, and Fe lines but also O and Mg lines and obtained those abundances to an outer region of ~0.5 r_180 for the first time, and confirmed that the metals in the ICM of such a fossil group are indeed extending to a large radius. We found steeper gradients for Mg, Si, S, and Fe abundances, while O showed almost flat abundance distribution. Abundance ratios of alpha-elements to Fe were similar to those of the other groups and poor clusters. We calculated the number ratio of type II to type Ia supernovae for the ICM enrichment to be 2.9 +- 0.5 within 0.1 r_180, and the value was consistent with those for the other groups and poor clusters observed with Suzaku. We also calculated metal mass-to-light ratios (MLRs) for Fe, O and Mg with B-band and K-band luminosities of the member galaxies of NGC 1550. The derived MLRs were comparable to those of NGC 5044 group in the r<0.1 r_180 region, while those of NGC 1550 are slightly higher than those of NGC 5044 in the outer region., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We studied the high temperature plasma in the direction of the Sculptor supercluster at z=0.108 with Suzaku. Suzaku carried out four observations in the supercluster: namely, A2811, A2811 offset, A2804, A2801 regions in 2005 Nov.--Dec., including the regions beyond the virial radii of these clusters. The study needed precise background estimation because the measured intensity of the redshifted lines, especially those from oxygen, were strongly affected by the the Galactic emission. The spectra taken in the regions outside of the virial radii of the member clusters were used as the background which included both the Galactic and Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) components. We also used the background data which were taken near the Sculptor supercluster. Temperature and metal abundance profiles were determined to the virial radii of the member clusters, and then we searched for the oxygen line emission in the region outside of the virial radii of the clusters. As a result, the temperature of the clusters decreased toward the virial radii, and the spectral fits for the filament region did not require extra component other than the Galactic and CXB components. We constrained the intensities of O VII and O VIII lines to be less than 8.1 and 5.1 photons cm^-2 s^-1 arcmin^-2, respectively, as 2-sigma upper limits. The intensity of O VII indicates n_H < 1.6e-5 cm^-3 (Z/0.1 Z_solar)^-1/2 (L/25 Mpc)^-1/2, which corresponds to an over density, delta < 60 (Z/0.1 Z_solar)^-1/2 (L/25 Mpc)^-1/2., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

(Abridged) We present results of Suzaku observations of the intracluster medium (ICM) in Abell 1689, combined with complementary analysis of the SDSS data and weak and strong lensing analysis of Subaru/Suprime-Cam and HST/ACS observations. Faint X-ray emission from the ICM around the virial radius is detected at 4.0 sigma significance. We find anisotropic gas temperature and entropy distributions in cluster outskirts correlated with large-scale structure of galaxies. The high temperature and entropy region in the northeastern (NE) outskirts is connected to an overdense filamentary structure. The outskirt regions in contact with low density void environments have low gas temperatures and entropies, deviating from hydrostatic equilibrium. These results suggest that thermalization of the ICM occurs faster along the filamentary structures than the void regions. A joint X-ray and lensing analysis shows that the hydrostatic mass is $\sim60-90%$ of spherical lensing one but comparable to a triaxial halo mass within errors in $0.6r_{2500} \simlt r \simlt 0.8r_{500}$, and that it is significantly biased as low as $\simlt60%$ within $0.4r_{2500}$, irrespective of mass models. The thermal gas pressure within $r_{500}$ is, at most, $\sim50$--60% of the total pressure to balance fully the gravity of the spherical lensing mass, and $\sim30$--40% around the virial radius. Although these constitute lower limits when one considers the possible halo triaxiality, these small relative contributions of thermal pressure would require additional sources of pressure, such as bulk and/or turbulent motions., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, 9 tables. The International X-ray Observatory (IXO) is a joint ESA-JAXA-NASA effort to address fundamental and timely questions in astrophysics: What happens close to a black hole? How did supermassive black holes grow? How does large scale structure form? What is the connection between these processes? To address these questions IXO will employ optics with 3 sq m collecting area and 5 arc sec angular resolution - 20 times more collecting area at 1 keV than any previous X-ray observatory. Focal plane instruments will deliver a 100-fold increase in effective area for high-resolution spectroscopy, deep spectral imaging over a wide field of view, unprecedented polarimetric sensitivity, microsecond spectroscopic timing, and high count rate capability. We report the discovery of diffuse hard (1-5 keV) X-ray emission around Jupiter in a deep 160 ks Suzaku XIS data. The emission is distributed over ~16x8 Jovian radius and spatially associated with the radiation belts and the Io Plasma Torus. It shows a flat power-law spectrum with a photon index of 1.4+/-0.2 with the 1-5 keV X-ray luminosity of (3.3+/-0.5)x10^15 erg/s. We discussed its origin and concluded that it seems to be truly diffuse, although a possibility of multiple background point sources can not be completely rejected with a limited angular resolution. If it is diffuse, the flat continuum indicates that X-rays arise by the non-thermal electrons in the radiation belts and/or the Io Plasma Torus. The synchrotron and bremsstrahlung models can be rejected from the necessary electron energy and X-ray spectral shape, respectively. The inverse-Compton scattering off solar photons by ultra-relativistic (several tens MeV) electrons can explain the energy and the spectrum but the necessary electron density is >~10 times larger than the value estimated from the empirical model of Jovian charge particles., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ApJL

While it may seem counterintuitive that X-ray astronomy should give any insights into low-temperature planetary systems, planets orbit stars whose magnetized surfaces divert a small fraction of the stellar energy into high energy products: coronal UV and X-rays, flare X-rays and energetic particles, and a high-velocity stellar wind. In our Solar System, X-ray emission gives unique insights into the solar activity, planetary atmospheres, cometary comae, charge exchange physics, and space weather across the Solar System. The stellar activity of young stars is greatly elevated and can substantially affect protoplanetary disks and planet formation processes. We highlight six studies achievable with the planned International X-ray Observatory which address in unique ways issues in planetary sciences: probing X-ray irradiation of protoplanetary disks with the iron fluorescent line and its effects on disk turbulence; study the complex charge-exchange X-ray emission from Jupiter and the Martian exosphere; elucidate charge-exchange processes in cometary comae; understanding heliospheric charge-exchange emission and the interpretation of the soft X-ray background; and examining the magnetic activity of planet-hosting stars and its evaporation of planetary atmospheres.

The metallicity distribution in the intracluster medium of the NGC 5044 group was studied up to 0.3 r_180 using the XIS instrument on board the Suzaku satellite. Abundances of O, Mg, Si, S, and Fe were measured with high accuracy. The region within a radius of 0.05 r_180 from the center shows approximately solar abundances of Mg, Si, S, and Fe, while the O/Fe ratio is about 0.5--0.6 in solar units. In the outer region, the Fe abundance gradually drops to 0.3 solar. Radial abundance profiles of Mg, Si and S are similar to that of Fe, while that of O seems to be flatter. At r>0.05 r_180, the mass density profile of O differs from that of Fe, showing a shoulder-like structure that traces the luminosity density profile of galaxies. The mass-to-light ratios for O and Fe in NGC 5044 are one of the largest among groups of galaxies, but they are still smaller than those in rich clusters. These abundance features probably reflect the metal enrichment history of this relaxed group hosting a giant elliptical galaxy in the center., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Suzaku observation of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4631 confirmed its X-ray halo extending out to about 10 kpc from the galactic disk. The XIS spectra yielded the temperature and metal abundance for the disk and the halo regions. The observed abundance pattern for O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe is consistent with the metal yield from type II supernovae, with an O mass of about 1E6 Msun contained in the halo. These features imply that metal-rich gas produced by type II supernova is brought into the halo region very effectively, most likely through a galactic wind. Temperature and metal abundance may be affected by charge exchange and dust. An upper limit for the hard X-ray flux was obtained, corresponding to a magnetic field higher than 0.5 uG., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, will be published in PASJ

Clusters of galaxies are among the best candidates for particle acceleration sources in the universe, a signature of which is non-thermal hard X-ray emission from the accelerated relativistic particles. We present early results on Suzaku observations of non-thermal emission from Abell 3376, which is a nearby on-going merger cluster. Suzaku observed the cluster twice, focusing on the cluster center containing the diffuse radio emission to the east, and cluster peripheral region to the west. For both observations, we detect no excess hard X-ray emission above the thermal cluster emission. An upper limit on the non-thermal X-ray flux of $2.1\times10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (15--50 keV) at the 3$\sigma$ level from a $34\times34$ arcmin$^2$ region, derived with the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD), is similar to that obtained with the BeppoSAX/PDS. Using the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) data, the upper limit on the non-thermal emission from the West Relic is independently constrained to be $<1.1\times10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (4$-$8 keV) at the 3$\sigma$ level from a 122 arcmin$^2$ region. Assuming Compton scattering between relativistic particles and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons, the intracluster magnetic field $B$ is limited to be $>0.03\mu$G (HXD) and $>0.10\mu$G (XIS)., Comment: 19pages, 10 figures, accepted in the PASJ

Temperature and abundance distributions of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in the NGC 507 group of galaxies were studied with Suzaku. Observed concentric annular spectra were well-represented by a two temperature model for ICM, and we found steeper abundance gradients for Mg, Si, S, and Fe compared with O in the central region. Abundance ratios of alpha-elements to iron were found to be similar to those in other groups and poor clusters. We calculated metal mass-to-light ratios for Fe, O and Mg (IMLR, OMLR, MMLR) for NGC 507, and values for different systems were compared. Hotter and richer systems tend to show higher values of IMLR, OMLR, and MMLR. OMLR and MMLR were measured to an outer region for the first time with Suzaku, while IMLR was consistent with that with ASCA. We also looked into 2-dimensional map of the hardness ratio, but found no significant deviation from the circular symmetry., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The results from Suzaku XIS observations of the relaxed cluster of galaxies Abell2052 are presented. Offset pointing data are used to estimate the Galactic foreground emission in the direction to the cluster. Significant soft X-ray excess emission above this foreground, the intra-cluster medium emission, and other background components is confirmed and resolved spectroscopically and radially. This excess can be described either by (a) local variations of known Galactic emission components or (b) an additional thermal component with temperature of about 0.2 keV, possibly associated with the cluster. The radial temperature and metal abundance profiles of the intra-cluster medium are measured within \sim 20 in radius (about 60% of the virial radius) from the cluster center . The temperature drops radially to 0.5-0.6 of the peak value at a radius of \sim 15'. The gas-mass-weighted metal abundance averaged over the observed region is found to be 0.21 +- 0.05 times solar., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ (2008), 19 pages, postscript figures

About half of the baryons in the local Universe are thought to reside in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures of 0.1-10 million K. Thermal soft excess emission in the spectrum of some cluster outskirts that contains OVII and/or OVIII emission lines is regarded as evidence of the WHIM, although the origin of the lines is controversial due to strong Galactic and solar system foreground emission. We observed the Coma-11 field, where the most prominent thermal soft excess has ever been reported, with Suzaku XIS in order to make clear the origin of the excess. We did not confirm OVII or OVIII excess emission. The OVII and OVIII intensity in Coma-11 is more than 5 sigma below that reported before and we obtained 2 sigma upper limits of 2.8 and 2.9 photons cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for OVII and OVIII, respectively. The intensities are consistent with those in another field (Coma-7) that we measured, and with other measurements in the Coma outskirts (Coma-7 and X Com fields with XMM-Newton). We did not confirm the spatial variation within Coma outskirts. The strong oxygen emission lines previously reported are likely due to solar wind charge exchange., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We present results of 120 ks observation of a compact group of galaxies HCG~62 ($z=0.0145$) with Suzaku XIS and HXD-PIN\@. The XIS spectra for four annular regions were fitted with two temperature {\it vapec} model with variable abundance, combined with the foreground Galactic component. The Galactic component was constrained to have a common surface brightness among the four annuli, and two temperature {\it apec} model was preferred to single temperature model. We confirmed the multi-temperature nature of the intra-group medium reported with Chandra and XMM-Newton, with a doughnut-like high temperature ring at radii 3.3--6.5$'$ in a hardness image. We found Mg, Si, S, and Fe abundances to be fairly robust. We examined the possible ``high-abundance arc'' at $\sim 2'$ southwest from the center, however Suzaku data did not confirm it. We suspect that it is a misidentification of an excess hot component in this region as the Fe line. Careful background study showed no positive detection of the extended hard X-rays previously reported with ASCA, in 5--12 keV with XIS and 12--40 keV with HXD-PIN, although our upper limit did not exclude the ASCA result. There is an indication that the X-ray intensity in $r<3.3'$ region is $70\pm 19$% higher than the nominal CXB level (5--12 keV), and Chandra and Suzaku data suggest that most of this excess could be due to concentration of hard X-ray sources with an average photon index of $\Gamma=1.38\pm 0.06$. Cumulative mass of O, Fe and Mg in the group gas and the metal mass-to-light ratio were derived and compared with those in other groups. We studied the properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in two clusters of galaxies (AWM 7 and Abell 1060) and two groups (HCG 62 and NGC 507) with the X-ray Observatory Suzaku. Based on spatially resolved energy spectra, we measured for the first time precise cumulative ICM metal masses within 0.1 and ~0.3 r_{180}. Comparing our results with supernova nucleosynthesis models, the number ratio of type II (SNe II) to type Ia (SNe Ia) is estimated to be ~3.5, assuming the metal mass in the ICM is represented by the sum of products synthesized in SNe Ia and SNe II. Normalized by the K-band luminosities of present galaxies, and including the metals in stars, the integrated number of past SNe II explosions is estimated to be close to or somewhat higher than the star formation rate determined from Hubble Deep Field observations., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We carried out 3 observations of the cluster of galaxies AWM 7, for the central region and 20'-east and 20'-west offset regions, with Suzaku. Temperature and abundance profiles are measured out to 27'~ 570 /h_70 kpc, which corresponded to ~0.35 r_180. The temperature of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) slightly decreases from 3.8 keV at the center to 3.4 keV in ~0.35 r_180 region, indicating a flatter profile than those in other nearby clusters. Abundance ratio of Si to Fe is almost constant in our observation, while Mg to Fe ratio increases with radius from the cluster center. O to Fe ratio in the west region shows increase with radius, while that in the east region is almost flat, though the errors are relatively large. These features suggest that the enrichment process is significantly different between products of type II supernovae (O and Mg) and those by type Ia supernovae (Si and Fe). We also examined positional shift of the central energy of He-like Fe-Ka line, in search of possible rotation of the ICM. The 90% upper limit for the line-of-sight velocity difference was derived to be v ~ 2000 km/s, suggesting that the ellipticity of AWM 7 is rather caused by a recent directional infall of the gas along the large-scale filament., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We carried out observations of the central and 20' east offset regions of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1060 with Suzaku. Spatially resolved X-ray spectral analysis has revealed temperature and abundance profiles of Abell 1060 out to 27' ~ 380; /h_70 kpc, which corresponded to ~ 0.25; r_180. Temperature decrease of the intra cluster medium from 3.4 keV at the center to 2.2 keV in the outskirt region are clearly observed. Abundances of Si, S and Fe also decrease by more than 50% from the center to the outer, while Mg shows fairly constant abundance distribution at ~ 0.7 solar within r < 17'. O shows lower abundance of ~ 0.3 solar in the central region (r~ 6'), and indicates a similar feature with Mg, however it is sensitive to the estimated contribution of the Galactic components of kT_1 ~ 0.15 keV and kT_2 ~ 0.7 keV in the outer annuli (r ~ 13'). Systematic effects due to the point spread function tails, contamination on the XIS filters, instrumental background, cosmic and/or Galactic X-ray background, and the assumed solar abundance tables are carefully examined. Results on temperature and abundances of Si, S, and Fe are consistent with those derived by XMM-Newton at r < 13'.
