Problem statement. The article highlights the discussion about the expediency and effectiveness of standardization as a way of terminology normalization. Such an activity is aimed at establishing a unified form of terminological units, which are assigned a specific meaning, and their form is fixed in special documents.The aim of this paper is to study the process of the formation of the basics of terminology standardization and to analyze the first measures on the formation of ideological, theoretical and methodological foundations of terminology standardization.Research methodology consists in the application of a descriptive method based on the oppositional and internal interpretation.Results. It has been found that the practical work on the terminology standardization is aimed at selecting and fixing terms for naming the concepts and for the further recommended or mandatory using them in relevant areas of scientific and practical activities. A necessity to develop such activities is also due to the fact that social communication is impossible without establishing clear, scientifically based terminology. The first methodological manual on drafting standards for terminology «The procedure for work on standardization and the introduction of scientific and technical terms and symbols and their definitions in the USSR» is analyzed. Novelty. It is proved that the non-regulated terminology can significantly inhibit the science development as the lack of regulated terminology leads to a contradictory terms interpretation in normative, design and technological documentation, as well as in scientific, technical, industrial and educational literature, official documents. The practical significance. The scientific work will be useful for the researchers standardizing the terminological systems of different fields of knowledge.Keywords: term, scientific and technical terminology, standardization.
