The article presents information about Richard Kovacevich, president and chief executive officer of Norwest Corp. Norwest, with assets of $55 billion, is the fourteenth-biggest bank of the U.S. Its return on common equity is 21 per cent, ranking it first among the 25 largest regional bank holding companies. Norwest's balance sheet is rock solid, with reserves covering nonperforming loans at 412 per cent, and its Tier 1 capital stands at 9.84 per cent. Richard Kovacevich got into banking in the mid-1970s when Citicorp went looking for executives with consumer marketing skills to build up its consumer banking operations.
