Visuospatial Neglect (VSN) affects spatial awareness, leading to functional and motor challenges. This study explores virtual reality (VR) as a potential complementary tool for VSN rehabilitation, offering a novel environment that intends to support therapy outcomes. Specifically, we aim to explore the initial experiences of patients and physiotherapists engaging with the protocol. VSN occurs in approximately 30% of stroke survivors, often presenting as inattention to one side of space. While conventional therapies rely on repetitive motor tasks, VR has emerged as a promising alternative for targeted and patient-centered rehabilitation. However, evidence on the integration of audio-visual cues in VR for VSN is limited. A preliminary VR task integrating audio-visual cues was co-designed with two physiotherapists. The task was then tested with two VSN patients over 12 sessions. Preliminary findings suggest potential benefits in patient experience, with one patient reporting increased confidence in mobility. High-fidelity, data-driven models that can quickly simulate thermal behavior during additive manufacturing (AM) are crucial for improving the performance of AM technologies in multiple areas, such as part design, process planning, monitoring, and control. However, the complexities of part geometries make it challenging for current models to maintain high accuracy across a wide range of geometries. Additionally, many models report a low mean square error (MSE) across the entire domain (part). However, in each time step, most areas of the domain do not experience significant changes in temperature, except for the heat-affected zones near recent depositions. Therefore, the MSE-based fidelity measurement of the models may be overestimated. This paper presents a data-driven model that uses Fourier Neural Operator to capture the local temperature evolution during the additive manufacturing process. In addition, the authors propose to evaluate the model using the $R^2$ metric, which provides a relative measure of the model's performance compared to using mean temperature as a prediction. The model was tested on numerical simulations based on the Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method for the Direct Energy Deposition process, and the results demonstrate that the model achieves high fidelity as measured by $R^2$ and maintains generalizability to geometries that were not included in the training process.

In this work, the mode I fracture toughness of dissimilar metal-composite adhesive joints is experimentally investigated using the double cantilever beam (DCB) test. The particular joint under study is resulted by the adhesive joining of a thin titanium sheet with a thin carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate and is envisioned to be implemented in the hybrid laminar flow control system of future aircraft. Four different industrial technologies for the joining of the titanium and CFRP adherents are evaluated/compared; co-bonding with and without adhesive and secondary bonding using either thermoset or thermoplastic CFRP. The vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique is employed for the manufacturing of the panels. After manufacturing, the panels are cut into test specimens that, because they are too thin (approximately 2.4 mm thick), needed to be stiffened from both titanium and composite sides with two aluminum backing beams to ensure the non-yielding of the titanium during the subsequent DCB tests. Towards the determination of the fracture toughness of the joint from the experimental data, an analytical model recently developed by the authors, that considers the bending-extension coupling of both sub-laminates constituting the test specimen as well as the manufacturing-induced residual thermal stresses, is applied. The future of 2D flexible electronics relies on the preparation of conducting ultrathin films of materials with mechanical robustness and flexibility in a simple but controlled manner. In this respect, metal-organic compounds present advantages over inorganic laminar crystals owing to their structural, chemical and functional diversity. While most metal-organic compounds are usually prepared in bulk, recent work has shown that some of them are processable down to low dimensional forms. Here we report the one-pot preparation, carried out at the water-air interface, of ultrathin (down to 4 nm) films of the metal-organic compound [Cu2I2(TAA)]n (TAA= thioacetamide). The films are shown to be homogenous over mm2 areas, smooth, highly transparent, mechanically robust and good electrical conductors with memristive behavior at low frequencies. This combination of properties, as well as the industrial availability of the two building blocks required for the preparation, demonstrates their wide range potential in future flexible and transparent electronics.

We use a network of molecularly linked gold nanoparticles (NPSAN: nanoparticles self-assembled network) to demonstrate the electrical detection (conductance variation) of a plasmon-induced isomerization (PII) of azobenzene derivatives (azobenzene bithiophene : AzBT). We show that PII is more efficient in a 3D-like (cluster-NPSAN) than in a purely two-dimensional NPSAN (i.e., a monolayer of AzBT functionalized Au NPs). By comparison with usual optical (UV-visible light) isomerization of AzBT, the PII shows a faster (a factor about 10) isomerization kinetics. Recent experiments demonstrate a temperature control of the electric conduction through a ferrocene-based molecular junction. Here we examine the results in view of determining means to distinguish between transport through single-particle molecular levels or via transport channels split by Coulomb repulsion. Both transport mechanisms are similar in molecular junctions given the similarities between molecular intralevel energies and the charging energy. We propose an experimentally testable way to identify the main transport process. By applying a magnetic field to the molecule, we observe that an interacting theory predicts a shift of the conductance resonances of the molecule whereas in the noninteracting case each resonance is split into two peaks. The interaction model works well in explaining our experimental results obtained in a ferrocene-based single-molecule junction, where the charge degeneracy peaks shift (but do not split) under the action of an applied 7-Tesla magnetic field. ITER Nb3Sn strand quality verification tests require large quantities of precise measurements. Therefore regular cross-checking between testing laboratories is critically important. In this paper, we present results from a cross-checking test of 140 samples between the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, USA and the University of Twente, the Netherlands. The tests comprise measurements at 4.2 K on critical current, RRR and hysteresis loss, while at room temperature the chromium layer thickness, Cu/nonCu ratio, filament twist pitch, and diameter were determined. We present a theoretical analysis aimed at understanding electrical conduction in molecular tunnel junctions. We focus on discussing the validity of coherent versus incoherent theoretical formulations for single-level tunneling to explain experimental results obtained under a wide range of experimental conditions, including measurements in individual molecules connecting the leads of electromigrated single-electron transistors and junctions of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of molecules sandwiched between two macroscopic contacts. We show that the restriction of transport through a single level in solid state junctions (no solvent) makes coherent and incoherent tunneling formalisms indistinguishable when only one level participates in transport. Similar to Marcus relaxation processes in wet electrochemistry, the thermal broadening of the Fermi distribution describing the electronic occupation energies in the electrodes accounts for the exponential dependence of the tunneling current on temperature. We demonstrate that a single-level tunnel model satisfactorily explains experimental results obtained in three different molecular junctions (both single-molecule and SAM-based) formed by ferrocene-based molecules. Among other things, we use the model to map the electrostatic potential profile in EGaIn-based SAM junctions in which the ferrocene unit is placed at different positions within the molecule, and we find that electrical screening gives rise to a strongly non-linear profile across the junction., Comment: 49 pages, 9 figures

Understanding how the mechanism of charge transport through molecular tunnel junctions depends on temperature is crucial to control electronic function in molecular electronic devices. With just a few systems investigated as a function of bias and temperature so far, thermal effects in molecular tunnel junctions remain poorly understood. Here we report a detailed charge transport study of an individual redox-active ferrocene-based molecule over a wide range of temperatures and applied potentials. The results show the temperature dependence of the current to vary strongly as a function of the gate voltage. Specifically, the current across the molecule exponentially increases in the Coulomb blockade regime and decreases at the charge degeneracy points, while remaining temperature-independent at resonance. Our observations can be well accounted for by a formal single-level tunneling model where the temperature dependence relies on the thermal broadening of the Fermi distributions of the electrons in the leads., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures

Nucleation and growth of solids from solutions impacts many natural processes and are fundamental to applications in materials engineering and medicine. For a crystalline solid, the nucleus is a nanoscale cluster of ordered atoms, which forms through mechanisms that are still poorly understood. These mechanisms have important consequences on the morphology and nucleation rates of the resultant crystals but it is unclear whether a nucleus forms spontaneously from solution in a single step or through multiple steps. Using in-situ electron microscopy, we observe and quantify how gold and silver nanocrystals nucleate from a supersaturated aqueous gold and silver solution in three distinct steps: (I) spinodal decomposition into solute-rich and solute-poor liquid phases, (II) nucleation of amorphous gold nanoclusters within the gold-rich liquid phase, followed by (III) crystallization of these amorphous clusters. Our ab-initio calculations on gold nucleation suggest that these steps might be associated with strong gold-gold atom coupling and water-mediated metastable gold complexes. The ITER cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) are built up from sub-cable bundles, wound in different stages, which are twisted to counter coupling loss caused by time-changing external magnet fields. The selection of the twist pitch lengths has major implications for the performance of the cable in the case of strain sensitive superconductors, i.e. Nb3Sn, as the electromagnetic and thermal contraction loads are large but also for the heat load from the AC coupling loss. Reduction of the transverse load and warm-up cool-down degradation can be reached by applying longer twist pitches in a particular sequence for the sub-stages, offering a large cable transverse stiffness, adequate axial flexibility and maximum allowed lateral strand support. Analysis of short sample (TF conductor) data reveals that increasing the twist pitch can lead to a gain of the effective axial compressive strain of more than 0.3 % with practically no degradation from bending. For reduction of the coupling loss, specific choices of the cabling twist sequence are needed with the aim to minimize the area of linked strands and bundles that are coupled and form loops with the applied changing magnetic field, instead of simply avoiding longer pitches. In addition we recommend increasing the wrap coverage of the CS conductor from 50 % to at least 70 %. The models predict significant improvement against strain sensitivity and substantial decrease of the AC coupling loss in Nb3Sn CICCs, but also for NbTi CICCs minimization of the coupling loss can be achieved. The level of current non-uniformity in NbTi CICCs sections near the joints in combination with the magnet field profile needs attention in view of proper joint design. The strand Joule power and current distribution at quench under DC conditions of two samples of ITER Poloidal Field Coil conductors, as tested in the SULTAN facility and of the so called PFCI Model Coil Insert, have been analyzed with the numerical cable model JackPot. The precise trajectories of all individual strands, joint design, cabling configuration, spatial distribution of the magnetic field, sample geometry and using experimentally determined interstrand resistance distributions have been taken into account. Although unable to predict the quench point due to the lack of a thermal-hydraulic routine, the model allows to assess the instantaneous strand power at quench and its local distribution in the cable, showing the hot spots, once the quench conditions in terms of current and temperature are experimentally known., The analysis points out the relation of the above mentioned factors with the DC quench stability of both short samples and coils. The possible small scale and local electrical-thermal interactions were ignored in order to examine the relevance of such effects in the overall prediction of the CICC performance The electromagnetic code shows an excellent quantitative predictive potential for CICC transport properties, excluding any freedom for matching the results. The influence of the local thermal effects in the modeling is identified as being marginal and far less than the generally accepted temperature margin for safe operation.
