Search

The removal of angular momentum from protostellar systems drives accretion onto the central star and may drive the dispersal of the protoplanetary disk. Winds and jets can contribute to removing angular momentum from the disk, though the dominant process remain unclear. To date, observational studies of resolved disk winds have mostly targeted highly inclined disks. We report the detection of extended H2 and [Ne II] emission toward the young stellar object SY Cha with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI-MRS). This is one of the first polychromatic detections of extended H2 toward a moderately inclined, i=51.1 degrees, Class II source. We measure the semi-opening angle of the H2 emission as well as build a rotation diagram to determine the H2 excitation temperature and abundance. We find a wide semi-opening angle, high temperature, and low column density for the H2 emission, all of which are characteristic of a disk wind. The accretion/ejection processes in T-Tauri stars are fundamental to their physical evolution, while also impacting the properties and evolution of the circumstellar material at a time when planet formation takes place. To this date, characterization of ongoing accretion processes in stellar pairs at 5-50\,au scales has been challenging, high angular resolution spectrographs are required to extract the spectral features of each component. We present the analysis of spectroscopic observations of the tight (160mas, 25au) T-Tauri system HT Lup A/B, obtained with MUSE at VLT in March and July of 2021. We focus on constraining the accretion/ejection processes and variability of the secondary component HT Lup B, by searching for accretion tracers applying High-Resolution Spectral Differential Imaging techniques. We retrieve strong (SNR $>$ 5) $H\alpha, H\beta$ and [OI]$\lambda6300$ emission in both epochs. The $H\alpha$ and $H\beta$ line fluxes showcase high variability, with variations up to 400-500\% between epochs. The fluxes are consistent with accretion rates of $8\times10^{-9} M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$ and $2\times10^{-9} M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$ for the first and second epoch, respectively. We attribute the increased accretion activity during the first night to a "burst" like event, followed by a relaxation period more representative of the common accretion activity of the system. The [OI]$\lambda6300$ line profiles remain relatively similar between epochs and suggest ejection rates on the order of $10^{-9}-10^{-10} M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$, compatible with moderate disk winds emission. With the advent of JWST, we acquire unprecedented insights into the physical and chemical structure of the inner regions of planet-forming disks where terrestrial planet formation occurs. The very low-mass stars (VLMS) are known to have a high occurrence rate of the terrestrial planets around them. Exploring the chemical composition of the gas in these inner regions of the disks can aid a better understanding of the connection between planet-forming disks and planets. The MIRI mid-Infrared Disk Survey (MINDS) project is a large JWST Guaranteed Time program to characterize the chemistry and physical state of planet-forming and debris disks. We use the JWST-MIRI/MRS spectrum to investigate the gas and dust composition of the planet-forming disk around the very low-mass star Sz28 (M5.5, 0.12\,M$_{\odot}$). We use the dust-fitting tool (DuCK) to determine the dust continuum and to get constraints on the dust composition and grain sizes. We use 0D slab models to identify and fit the molecular spectral features, yielding estimates on the temperature, column density and the emitting area. To test our understanding of the chemistry in the disks around VLMS, we employ the thermo-chemical disk model {P{\tiny RO}D{\tiny I}M{\tiny O}} and investigate the reservoirs of the detected hydrocarbons. We explore how the C/O ratio affects the inner disk chemistry. JWST reveals a plethora of hydrocarbons, including \ce{CH3}, \ce{CH4}, \ce{C2H2}, \ce{^{13}CCH2}, \ce{C2H6}, \ce{C3H4}, \ce{C4H2} and \ce{C6H6} suggesting a disk with a gaseous C/O\,>\,1. Additionally, we detect \ce{CO2}, \ce{^{13}CO2}, \ce{HCN}, and \ce{HC3N}. \ce{H2O} and OH are absent in the spectrum. We do not detect PAHs. Photospheric stellar absorption lines of \ce{H2O} and \ce{CO} are identified. We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of TW Hya at 0.65 mm with 0.5 arcsecond angular resolution, together with high angular resolution archival observations at 0.87 mm, 1.3 mm, 2.1 mm and 3.1 mm. We constrain the outer disk emission with both image-plane retrieval, and visibility-plane modeling with non-parametric and parametric fitting tools. Our results confirm emission in the outer disk regions of TW Hya (60 au <= R <= 110 au) at 0.65 mm, 0.87 mm and 1.3 mm. With image-plane retrieval, we resolve the new continuum gap and ring, namely D79 and B86, at 0.87 mm and 1.3 mm. With visibility-plane modeling, we also detect this substructure at 0.65 mm in the form of a quasi-constant emission at the 1-sigma level. Furthermore, it has a high spectral index of 3.7, which may indicate dust grain sizes << 1 mm. It may be a dust trap or a traffic jam, that has a flux density of 60 mJy and a mass (1.59 earth masses) that accounts for up to 2% of the dust disk at 0.65 mm. In conclusion, we confirm the existence of a faint ring in the outer regions of TW Hya at multiple millimeter wavelengths. Most stars form in multiple systems whose properties can significantly impact circumstellar disk evolution. We investigate the physical and chemical properties of the equal-mass, small separation (~66 mas, ~9 au) DF Tau binary system. Previous observations indicated that only DF Tau A has a circumstellar disk. We present JWST-MIRI MRS observations of DF Tau. The MIRI spectrum shows a forest of H2O lines and emission from CO, C2H2, HCN, CO2, and OH. LTE slab models are used to determine the properties of the gas, and we analyze high angular spatial and spectral resolution data from ALMA, VLTI-GRAVITY, and IRTF-iSHELL to aid in the interpretation of the JWST data. The 1.3 mm ALMA continuum data show two equal-brightness sources of compact (R<3 au) emission, with separations and movement consistent with astrometry from VLTI-GRAVITY and the known orbit. This is interpreted as a robust detection of a disk around DF Tau B, which we suggest may host a small (~1 au) cavity to reconcile all observations. The disk around DF Tau A is expected to be a full disk, and spatially and spectrally resolved dust and gas emission points to hot, close-in (<0.2 au) material. Hot (~500-1000 K) H2O, HCN, and C2H2 emission in the MIRI data likely originate in the DF Tau A disk, while a cold (<200 K) H2O component with an extended emitting area is consistent with an origin from both disks. Despite the very compact outer disks, the inner disk composition and conditions are similar to isolated systems, suggesting that the close binary nature is not a driving factor in setting the inner disk chemistry. However, constraining the geometry of the disks, for instance, via higher resolution ALMA observations, would provide additional insight into the mid-infrared gas emission. The composition and distribution of the gas in a protoplanetary disk plays a key role in shaping the outcome of the planet formation process. Observationally, the recovery of information such as the emission height and brightness temperature from interferometric data is often limited by the imaging processes. To overcome the limitations of image-reconstruction when analyzing gas emission from interferometric observations, we have introduced a parametric model to fit the main observable properties of the gaseous disk component in the visibility plane. This approach is also known as parametric visibility modeling. We applied our parametric visibility modeling to the gas brightness distribution of the molecular line emission from 12CO J=3-2 and 13CO J=3-2 in the disk around MHO 6, a very-low-mass star in the Taurus star-forming Region. To improve the flux fidelity of our parametric models, we combined models with different pixel resolution before the computation of their visibilities, referred to as ``nesting images.'' When we apply our parametric visibility modeling to MHO 6, with independent fits to the emission from its CO isopotologues, the models return the same consistent results for the stellar mass, disk geometry, and central velocity. The surface height and brightness temperature distribution are also recovered. When compared to other disks, MHO 6 surface height is among the most elevated surfaces, consistent with the predictions for disks around very-low-mass stars. This work demonstrates the feasibility of running rapidly iterable parametric visibility models in moderate resolution and sensitivity interferometric observations. More importantly, this methodology opens the analysis of disk's gas morphology to observations where image-based techniques are unable to robustly operate, as in the case of the compact disk around MHO 6., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

[abridged]Photoevaporation and dust-trapping are individually considered to be important mechanisms in the evolution and morphology of protoplanetary disks. We studied how the presence of early substructures affects the evolution of the dust distribution and flux in the millimeter continuum of disks that are undergoing photoevaporative dispersal. We also tested if the predicted properties resemble those observed in the population of transition disks. We used the numerical code Dustpy to simulate disk evolution considering gas accretion, dust growth, dust-trapping at substructures, and mass loss due to X-ray and EUV (XEUV) photoevaporation and dust entrainment. Then, we compared how the dust mass and millimeter flux evolve for different disk models. We find that, during photoevaporative dispersal, disks with primordial substructures retain more dust and are brighter in the millimeter continuum than disks without early substructures, regardless of the photoevaporative cavity size. Once the photoevaporative cavity opens, the estimated fluxes for the disk models that are initially structured are comparable to those found in the bright transition disk population ($F_\textrm{mm} > 30\, \textrm{mJy}$), while the disk models that are initially smooth have fluxes comparable to the transition disks from the faint population ($F_\textrm{mm} < 30\, \textrm{mJy}$), suggesting a link between each model and population. Our models indicate that the efficiency of the dust trapping determines the millimeter flux of the disk, while the gas loss due to photoevaporation controls the formation and expansion of a cavity, decoupling the mechanisms responsible for each feature. In consequence, even a planet with a mass comparable to Saturn could trap enough dust to reproduce the millimeter emission of a bright transition disk, while its cavity size is independently driven by photoevaporative dispersal., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Dense stellar environments as hosts of ongoing star formation increase the probability of gravitational encounters among stellar systems during the early stages of evolution. Stellar interaction may occur through non-recurring, hyperbolic or parabolic passages (a so-called 'fly-by'), through secular binary evolution, or through binary capture. In all three scenarios, the strong gravitational perturbation is expected to manifest itself in the disc structures around the individual stars. Here, we present near-infrared polarised light observations that were taken with the SPHERE/IRDIS instrument of three known interacting twin-disc systems: AS 205, EM* SR 24, and FU Orionis. The scattered light exposes spirals likely caused by the gravitational interaction. On a larger scale, we observe connecting filaments between the stars. We analyse their very complex polarised intensity and put particular attention to the presence of multiple light sources in these systems. The local angle of linear polarisation indicates the source whose light dominates the scattering process from the bridging region between the two stars. Further, we show that the polarised intensity from scattering with multiple relevant light sources results from an incoherent summation of the individuals' contribution. This can produce nulls of polarised intensity in an image, as potentially observed in AS 205. We discuss the geometry and content of the systems by comparing the polarised light observations with other data at similar resolution, namely with ALMA continuum and gas emission. We report the discovery of a circumplanetary disk (CPD) candidate embedded in the circumstellar disk of the T Tauri star AS 209 at a radial distance of about 200 au (on-sky separation of 1."4 from the star at a position angle of $161^\circ$), isolated via $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ emission. This is the first instance of CPD detection via gaseous emission capable of tracing the overall CPD mass. The CPD is spatially unresolved with a $117\times82$ mas beam and manifests as a point source in $^{13}$CO, indicating that its diameter is $\lesssim14$ au. The CPD is embedded within an annular gap in the circumstellar disk previously identified using $^{12}$CO and near-infrared scattered light observations, and is associated with localized velocity perturbations in $^{12}$CO. The coincidence of these features suggests that they have a common origin: an embedded giant planet. We use the $^{13}$CO intensity to constrain the CPD gas temperature and mass. We find that the CPD temperature is $\gtrsim35$ K, higher than the circumstellar disk temperature at the radial location of the CPD, 22 K, suggesting that heating sources localized to the CPD must be present. The CPD gas mass is $\gtrsim 0.095 M_{\rm Jup} \simeq 30 M_{\rm Earth}$ adopting a standard $^{13}$CO abundance. From the non-detection of millimeter continuum emission at the location of the CPD ($3\sigma$ flux density $\lesssim26.4~\mu$Jy), we infer that the CPD dust mass is $\lesssim 0.027 M_{\rm Earth} \simeq 2.2$ lunar masses, indicating a low dust-to-gas mass ratio of $\lesssim9\times10^{-4}$. Context. The protoplanetary disk around the star HD 100546 displays prominent substructures in the form of two concentric rings. Recent observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed these features with high angular resolution and have resolved the faint outer ring well. This allows us to study the nature of the system further. Aims. Our aim is to constrain some of the properties of potential planets embedded in the disk, assuming that they induce the observed rings and gaps. Methods. We present the self-calibrated $0.9\,$mm ALMA observations of the dust continuum emission from the circumstellar disk around HD 100546. These observations reveal substructures in the disk that are consistent with two rings, the outer ring being much fainter than the inner one. We reproduced this appearance closely with a numerical model that assumes two embedded planets. We varied planet and disk parameters in the framework of the planet-disk interaction code FARGO3D and used the outputs for the gas and dust distribution to generate synthetic observations with the code RADMC-3D. Results. From this comparison, we find that an inner planet located at $r_1 = 13\,$au with a mass $M_1 = 8 M_{\rm{Jup}}$ and an outer planet located at $r_2 = 143\,$au with a mass $M_2 = 3 M_{\rm{Jup}}$ leads to the best agreement between synthetic and ALMA observations (deviation less than $3\sigma$ for the normalized radial profiles). To match the very low brightness of the outer structure relative to the inner ring, the initial disk gas surface density profile needs to follow an exponentially tapered power law (self-similar solution), rather than a simple power-law profile., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Planets form and obtain their compositions in dust and gas-rich disks around young stars, and the outcome of this process is intimately linked to the disk chemical properties. The distributions of molecules across disks regulate the elemental compositions of planets, including C/N/O/S ratios and metallicity (O/H and C/H), as well as access to water and prebiotically relevant organics. Emission from molecules also encodes information on disk ionization levels, temperature structures, kinematics, and gas surface densities, which are all key ingredients of disk evolution and planet formation models. The Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS) ALMA Large Program was designed to expand our understanding of the chemistry of planet formation by exploring disk chemical structures down to 10 au scales. The MAPS program focuses on five disks - around IM Lup, GM Aur, AS 209, HD 163296, and MWC 480 - in which dust substructures are detected and planet formation appears to be ongoing. We observed these disks in 4 spectral setups, which together cover ~50 lines from over 20 different species. This paper introduces the ApJS MAPS Special Issue by presenting an overview of the program motivation, disk sample, observational details, and calibration strategy. We also highlight key results, including discoveries of links between dust, gas, and chemical sub-structures, large reservoirs of nitriles and other organics in the inner disk regions, and elevated C/O ratios across most disks. The Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales large program (MAPS LP) surveyed the chemical structures of five protoplanetary disks across more than 40 different spectral lines at high angular resolution (0.15" and 0.30" beams for Bands 6 and 3, respectively) and sensitivity (spanning 0.3 - 1.3 mJy/beam and 0.4 - 1.9 mJy/beam for Bands 6 and 3, respectively). In this article, we describe our multi-stage workflow -- built around the CASA tclean image deconvolution procedure -- that we used to generate the core data product of the MAPS LP: the position-position-velocity image cubes for each spectral line. Owing to the expansive nature of the survey, we encountered a range of imaging challenges; some are familiar to the sub-mm protoplanetary disk community, like the benefits of using an accurate CLEAN mask, and others less well-known, like the incorrect default flux scaling of the CLEAN residual map first described in Jorsater & van Moorsel 1995 (the "JvM effect"). We distill lessons learned into recommended workflows for synthesizing image cubes of molecular emission. In particular, we describe how to produce image cubes with accurate fluxes via the "JvM correction," a procedure that is generally applicable to any image synthesized via CLEAN deconvolution but is especially critical for low S/N emission. We further explain how we used visibility tapering to promote a common, fiducial beam size and contextualize the interpretation of signal to noise ratio when detecting molecular emission from protoplanetary disks. This paper provides an overview of how crypto currency and blockchain engineering interacts with the law enforcement. We point out that a large proportion of crypto users are amateur investors and the dominant and the largest segment in crypto crime are simply investment scams (!). We look at various questions of criminal use and misuse of technology, especially in the areas of money laundering or cashing out the profits originating from illicit activities. The aim of the paper is to raise a set of concerns arising in the criminal justice and policing circles, based on the interviews with law enforcement practitioners, and to see how cryptos could be reconciled with public security and safety. We propose a simplified classification of crimes related to crypto currency. We study the development of blockchains in a broader context of applied cryptography and payment technology. Ransomware is a big threat but we also need protection against corporate misconduct or negligence, with untested financial services breaching customer trust or government regulations. Not paying taxes is illegal, but there is more at stake: exposing crypto holders to losing all their savings in scams or thefts. PDS70 is a unique system in which two protoplanets, PDS70b and c, have been discovered within the dust-depleted cavity of their disk, at $\sim$22 and 34au respectively, by direct imaging at infrared wavelengths. Subsequent detection of the planets in the H$\alpha$ line indicates that they are still accreting material through circumplanetary disks. In this Letter, we present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the dust continuum emission at 855$\mu$m at high angular resolution ($\sim$20mas, 2.3au) that aim to resolve the circumplanetary disks and constrain their dust masses. Our observations confirm the presence of a compact source of emission co-located with PDS70c, spatially separated from the circumstellar disk and less extended than $\sim$1.2au in radius, a value close to the expected truncation radius of the cicumplanetary disk at a third of the Hill radius. The emission around PDS70c has a peak intensity of $\sim$86$\pm$16 $\mu \mathrm{Jy}~\mathrm{beam}^{-1}$ which corresponds to a dust mass of $\sim$0.031M$_{\oplus}$ or $\sim$0.007M$_{\oplus}$, assuming that it is only constituted of 1 $\mu$m or 1 mm sized grains, respectively. We also detect extended, low surface brightness continuum emission within the cavity near PDS70b. We observe an optically thin inner disk within 18au of the star with an emission that could result from small micron-sized grains transported from the outer disk through the orbits of b and c. We present a detailed analysis for a subset of the high resolution (~35 mas, or 5 au) ALMA observations from the Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project (DSHARP) to search for faint 1.3 mm continuum emission associated with dusty circumplanetary material located within the narrow annuli of depleted emission (gaps) in circumstellar disks. This search used the Jennings et al. (2020) $\tt{frank}$ modeling methodology to mitigate contamination from the local disk emission, and then deployed a suite of injection-recovery experiments to statistically characterize point-like circumplanetary disks in residual images. While there are a few putative candidates in this sample, they have only marginal local signal-to-noise ratios and would require deeper measurements to confirm. Associating a 50% recovery fraction with an upper limit, we find these data are sensitive to circumplanetary disks with flux densities $\gtrsim 50-70$ $\mu$Jy in most cases. There are a few examples where those limits are inflated ($\gtrsim 110$ $\mu$Jy) due to lingering non-axisymmetric structures in their host circumstellar disks, most notably for a newly identified faint spiral in the HD 143006 disk. For standard assumptions, this analysis suggests that these data should be sensitive to circumplanetary disks with dust masses $\gtrsim 0.001-0.2$ M$_\oplus$. While those bounds are comparable to some theoretical expectations for young giant planets, we discuss how plausible system properties (e.g., relatively low host planet masses or the efficient radial drift of solids) could require much deeper observations to achieve robust detections., Comment: ApJ, in press; 30 pages, 15 figures (one is a 4-part figure set)

CMOS sensors were successfully implemented in the STAR tracker [1]. LHC experiments have shown that efficient b tagging, reconstruction of displaced vertices and identification of disappearing tracks are necessary. An improved vertex detector is justified for the ILC. To achieve a point(spatial single layer) resolution below the one-{\mu}m range while improving other characteristics (radiation tolerance and eventually time resolution) we will need the use of 1-micron pitch pixels. Therefore, we propose a single MOS transistor that acts as an amplifying device and a detector with a buried charge-collecting gate. Device simulations both classical and quantum, have led to the proposed DoTPiX structure. With the evolution of silicon processes, well below 100 nm line feature, this pixel should be feasible. The "Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project" (DSHARP) has revealed an abundance and ubiquity of rings and gaps over a large sample of young planet-forming disks, which are hypothesised to be induced by the presence of forming planets. In this context, we present the first attempt to directly image these young companions for 10 of the DSHARP disks, by using NaCo/VLT high contrast observations in L'-band instrument and angular differential imaging techniques. We report the detection of a point-like source candidate at 1.1" (174.9 au) for RU Lup, and at 0.42" (55 AU) for Elias 24. In the case of RU Lup, the proper motion of the candidate is consistent with a stationary background contaminant, based on the astrometry derived from our observations and available archival data. For Elias 24 the point-like source candidate is located in one of the disk gaps at 55 AU. Assuming it is a planetary companion, our analysis suggest a mass ranging from $0.5 M_J$ up to $5 M_J$, depending on the presence of a circumplanetary disk and its contribution to the luminosity of the system. However, no clear confirmation is obtained at this stage, and follow-up observations are mandatory to verify if the proposed source is physical, comoving with the stellar host, and associated with a young massive planet sculpting the gap observed at 55\,AU. For all the remaining systems, the lack of detections suggests the presence of planetary companions with masses lower than $5M_J$, based on our derived mass detection limits. In the past years, high angular resolution observations have revealed that circumstellar discs appear in a variety of shapes with diverse substructures being ubiquitous. This has given rise to the question of whether these substructures are triggered by planet-disc interactions. Besides direct imaging, one of the most promising methods to distinguish between different disc shaping mechanisms is to study the kinematics of the gas disc. In particular, the deviations of the rotation profile from Keplerian velocity can be used to probe perturbations in the gas pressure profile that may be caused by embedded planets. In this paper we aim to analyze the gas brightness temperature and kinematics of the transitional disc around the CQ Tau star in order to resolve and characterize substructure in the gas, caused by possible perturbers. For our analysis we use spatially resolved ALMA observations of 12CO, 13CO and C18O (J=2-1). We further extract robust line centroids for each channel map and fit a number of Keplerian disc models to the velocity field. The gas kinematics of the CQ Tau disc present non-Keplerian features, showing bent and twisted iso-velocity curves in 12CO and 13CO. Significant spiral structures are detected between 10-180 au in both the brightness temperature and the rotation velocity of 12CO after subtraction of an azimuthally symmetric model, which may be tracing planet-disc interactions with an embedded planet or low-mass companion. We identify three spirals, two in the brightness temperature and one in the velocity residuals, spanning a large azimuth and radial extent. The brightness temperature spirals are morphologically connected to spirals observed in NIR scattered light in the same disc, indicating a common origin. We aim to estimate if structures, such as cavities, rings, and gaps, are common in disks around VLMS and to test models of structure formation in these disks. We also aim to compare the radial extent of the gas and dust emission in disks around VLMS, which can give us insight about radial drift. We studied six disks around VLMS in the Taurus star-forming region using ALMA Band 7 ($\sim 340\,$GHz) at a resolution of $\sim0.1''$. The targets were selected because of their high disk dust content in their stellar mass regime. Our observations resolve the disk dust continuum in all disks. In addition, we detect the $^{12}$CO ($J=3-2$) emission line in all targets and $^{13}$CO ($J=3-2$) in five of the six sources. The angular resolution allows the detection of dust substructures in three out of the six disks, which we studied by using UV-modeling. Central cavities are observed in the disks around stars MHO\,6 (M5.0) and CIDA\,1 (M4.5), while we have a tentative detection of a multi-ringed disk around J0433. Single planets of masses $0.1\sim0.4\,M_{\rm{Jup}}$ would be required. The other three disks with no observed structures are the most compact and faintest in our sample. The emission of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO is more extended than the dust continuum emission in all disks of our sample. When using the $^{12}$CO emission to determine the gas disk extension $R_{\rm{gas}}$, the ratio of $R_{\rm{gas}}/R_{\rm{dust}}$ in our sample varies from 2.3 to 6.0, which is consistent with models of radial drift being very efficient around VLMS in the absence of substructures. Our observations do not exclude giant planet formation on the substructures observed. A comparison of the size and luminosity of VLMS disks with their counterparts around higher mass stars shows that they follow a similar relation.

We observed Proxima Centauri with the Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) five times in 2016 and 2017 to search for transits of Proxima Centauri b. Following standard analysis procedures, we found three asymmetric, transit-like events that are now understood to be vibrational systematics. This systematic is correlated with the width of the point-response function (PRF), which we measure with rotated and non-rotated Gaussian fits with respect to the detecor array. We show that the systematic can be removed with a novel application of an adaptive elliptical-aperture photometry technique, and compare the performance of this technique with fixed and variable circular-aperture photometry, using both BiLinearly Interpolated Subpixel Sensitivity (BLISS) maps and non-binned Pixel-Level Decorrelation (PLD). With BLISS maps, elliptical photometry results in a lower standard deviation of normalized residuals, and reduced or similar correlated noise when compared to circular apertures. PLD prefers variable, circular apertures, but generally results in more correlated noise than BLISS. This vibrational effect is likely present in other telescopes and Spitzer observations, where correction could improve results. About one out of 200 Sun-like stars has a planet with an orbital period shorter than one day: an ultra-short-period planet (Sanchis-ojeda et al. 2014; Winn et al. 2018). All of the previously known ultra-short-period planets are either hot Jupiters, with sizes above 10 Earth radii (Re), or apparently rocky planets smaller than 2 Re. Such lack of planets of intermediate size (the "hot Neptune desert") has been interpreted as the inability of low-mass planets to retain any hydrogen/helium (H/He) envelope in the face of strong stellar irradiation. Here, we report the discovery of an ultra-short-period planet with a radius of 4.6 Re and a mass of 29 Me, firmly in the hot Neptune desert. Data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Ricker et al. 2015) revealed transits of the bright Sun-like star \starname\, every 0.79 days. The planet's mean density is similar to that of Neptune, and according to thermal evolution models, it has a H/He-rich envelope constituting 9.0^(+2.7)_(-2.9)% of the total mass. With an equilibrium temperature around 2000 K, it is unclear how this "ultra-hot Neptune" managed to retain such an envelope. Follow-up observations of the planet's atmosphere to better understand its origin and physical nature will be facilitated by the star's brightness (Vmag=9.8)., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. The fishbone-induced transport of alpha particles is computed for the ITER 15 MA baseline scenario, using the nonlinear hybrid Kinetic-MHD code XTOR-K. Two limit cases have been studied, in order to analyse the characteristic regimes of the fishbone instability : the weak kinetic drive limit and the strong kinetic drive limit. In both those regimes, characteristic features of the n = m = 1 fishbone instability are recovered, such as a strong up/down-chirping of the mode frequency, associated with a resonant transport of trapped and passing alpha particles. The effects of the n = m = 0 sheared poloidal and toroidal plasma rotation are taken into account in the simulations. The shear is not negligible, which implies that the fishbone mode frequency has a radial dependency, impacting the wave-particle resonance condition. Phase space hole and clump structures are observed in both nonlinear regimes, centered around the precessional and passing resonances. These structures remains attached to the resonances as the different mode frequencies chirp up and down. In the nonlinear phase, the transport of individual resonant trapped particles is identified to be linked to mode-particle synchronization. On this basis, a partial mechanism for the nonlinear coupling between particle transport and mode dominant down-chirping is proposed. The overall transport of alpha particles inside out the q = 1 surface is of order 2-5% of the initial population between the simulations. The loss of alpha power is found to be directly equal to the loss of alpha particles.

Block ciphers are in widespread use since the 1970s. Their iterated structure is prone to numerous round invariant attacks for example in Linear Cryptanalysis (LC). The next step is to look at non-linear polynomial invariants cf. Eurocrypt'95. Until recently, researchers have found extremely few such attacks, with some impossibility results. Eventually recent papers show how to construct polynomial invariant attacks for block ciphers, however many such results were of degree 2. In this paper we propose a new incremental methodology for constructing high degree polynomial invariant attacks on block ciphers. A trivial attack on one cipher setup will be transposed to show the existence of a more advanced attack on a stronger cipher in several steps. The key tool is the manipulation of the roots of the so called Fundamental Equation. A new model of fast ion source induced by Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) in tokamaks has been implemented in the hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic code XTOR-K. This source, combined with the collisions also recently implemented, allows for the modeling of realistic slowing-down populations and their interplay with macroscopic modes. This paper describes the Neutral Beam injection and ionization model designed to reproduce experimental configurations and its validation for a typical discharge of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The application to the interaction of NBI-induced fast particles with a kink mode in ASDEX Upgrade demonstrates a resonance between passing particles and the n=1 mode. This resonance partially stabilizes the kink mode and induces a radial transport of fast particles. Preliminary results in ITER-like circular geometry show that NBI induces a toroidal torque but has little impact on the kink mode dynamics.

Linear (or differential) cryptanalysis may seem dull topics for a mathematician: they are about super simple invariants characterized by say a word on n=64 bits with very few bits at 1, the space of possible attacks is small, and basic principles are trivial. In contract mathematics offers an infinitely rich world of possibilities. If so, why is that cryptographers have ever found so few attacks on block ciphers? In this paper we argue that black-box methods used so far to find attacks in symmetric cryptography are inadequate and we work with a more recent white-box algebraic methodology. Invariant attacks can be constructed explicitly through the study of roots of the so-called Fundamental Equation (FE). We also argue that certain properties of the ring of Boolean polynomials such as lack of unique factorization allow for a certain type of product construction attacks to flourish. As a proof of concept we show how to construct a complex and non-trivial attack where a polynomial of degree 7 is an invariant for any number of rounds for a complex block cipher.

We report Spitzer Space Telescope observations during predicted transits of the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b. As the nearest terrestrial habitable-zone planet we will ever discover, any potential transit of Proxima b would place strong constraints on its radius, bulk density, and atmosphere. Subsequent transmission spectroscopy and secondary-eclipse measurements could then probe the atmospheric chemistry, physical processes, and orbit, including a search for biosignatures. However, our photometric results rule out planetary transits at the 200~ppm level at 4.5$~{\mu}m$, yielding a 3$\sigma$ upper radius limit of 0.4~$R_\rm{\oplus}$ (Earth radii). Previous claims of possible transits from optical ground- and space-based photometry were likely correlated noise in the data from Proxima Centauri's frequent flaring. Follow-up observations should focus on planetary radio emission, phase curves, and direct imaging. Our study indicates dramatically reduced stellar activity at near-to-mid infrared wavelengths, compared to the optical. The combination of high resolution and sensitivity offered by ALMA is revolutionizing our understanding of protoplanetary discs, as their bulk gas and dust distributions can be studied independently. In this paper we present resolved ALMA observations of the continuum emission ($\lambda=1.3$ mm) and CO isotopologues ($^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O $J=2-1$) integrated intensity from the disc around the nearby ($d = 162$ pc), intermediate mass ($M_{\star}=1.67\,M_{\odot}$) pre-main-sequence star CQ Tau. The data show an inner depression in continuum, and in both $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O emission. We employ a thermo-chemical model of the disc reproducing both continuum and gas radial intensity profiles, together with the disc SED. The models show that a gas inner cavity with size between 15 and 25 au is needed to reproduce the data with a density depletion factor between $\sim 10^{-1}$ and $\sim 10^{-3}$. The radial profile of the distinct cavity in the dust continuum is described by a Gaussian ring centered at $R_{\rm dust}=53\,$au and with a width of $\sigma=13\,$au. Three dimensional gas and dust numerical simulations of a disc with an embedded planet at a separation from the central star of $\sim20\,$au and with a mass of $\sim 6\textrm{-} 9\,M_{\rm Jup}$ reproduce qualitatively the gas and dust profiles of the CQ Tau disc. However, a one planet model appears not to be able to reproduce the dust Gaussian density profile predicted using the thermo-chemical modeling.

One of the major open problems in symmetric cryptanalysis is to discover new specif i c types of invariant properties which can hold for a larger number of rounds of a block cipher. We have Generalised Linear Cryptanalysis (GLC) and Partitioning Cryptanalysis (PC). Due to double-exponential combinatorial explosion of the number of possible invariant properties systematic exploration is not possible and extremely few positive working examples of GLC are known. Our answer is to work with polynomial algebraic invariants which makes partitions more intelligible. We have developed a constructive algebraic approach which is about making sure that a certain combination of polynomial equations is zero. We work with an old block cipher from 1980s which has particularly large hardware complexity compared to modern ciphers e.g. AES. However all this complexity is not that useful if we are able to construct powerful non-linear invariants which work for any number of rounds. A key feature of our invariant attacks is that we are able to completely eliminate numerous state and key bits. We also construct invariants for the (presumably stronger) KT1 keys. Distributed ledger and blockchain systems are expected to make financial systems easier to audit, reduce counter-party risk and transfer assets seamlessly. The key concept is a token controlled by a cryptographic private key for spending, and represented by a public key for receiving and audit purposes. Ownership transfers are authorized with digital signatures and recorded on a ledger visible to numerous participants. Several ways to enhance the privacy of such ledgers have been proposed. In this paper we study two major techniques to enhance privacy of token transfers with the help of improved cryptography: M\"obius and CryptoNote. The comparison is illuminating: both techniques use "ring signatures" and some form of "stealth addressing" or key derivation techniques, yet each does it in a completely different way. M\"obius is more recent and operates in a more co-operative way (with permission) and is not yet specified at a sufficiently detailed level. Our primary goal is to explore the suitability of these two techniques for improving the privacy of payments on cryptographic ledgers. We explain various conflicting requirements and strategic choices which arise when trying to conceal the identity of participants and the exact details of transactions in our context while simultaneously enabling fast final settlement of tokens with a reasonable level of liquidity. We show that in these systems, third-party observers see obfuscated settlement. We finish with a summary of explicit warnings and advice for implementors of such systems., Comment: 47 pages

A large fraction of the protoplanetary disks observed with ALMA display multiple well-defined and nearly perfectly circular rings in the continuum, in many cases with substantial peak-to-valley contrast. The DSHARP campaign shows that several of these rings are very narrow in radial extent. In this paper we test the hypothesis that these dust rings are caused by dust trapping in radial pressure bumps, and if confirmed, put constraints on the physics of the dust trapping mechanism. We model this process analytically in 1D, assuming axisymmetry. By comparing this model to the data, we find that all rings are consistent with dust trapping. Based on a plausible model of the dust temperature we find that several rings are narrower than the pressure scale height, providing strong evidence for dust trapping. The rings have peak absorption optical depth in the range between 0.2 and 0.5. The dust masses stored in each of these rings is of the order of tens of Earth masses, though much ambiguity remains due to the uncertainty of the dust opacities. The dust rings are dense enough to potentially trigger the streaming instability, but our analysis cannot give proof of this mechanism actually operating. Our results show, however, that the combination of very low alpha_turb << 5e-4 and very large grains a_grain >> 0.1 cm can be excluded by the data for all the rings studied in this paper., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present a detailed analysis of new ALMA observations of the disk around the T-Tauri star HD 143006, which at 46 mas (7.6 au) resolution reveal new substructures in the 1.25 mm continuum emission. The disk resolves into a series of concentric rings and gaps together with a bright arc exterior to the rings that resembles hydrodynamics simulations of a vortex, and a bridge-like feature connecting the two innermost rings. Although our $^{12}$CO observations at similar spatial resolution do not show obvious substructure, they reveal an inner disk depleted of CO emission. From the continuum emission and the CO velocity field we find that the innermost ring has a higher inclination than the outermost rings and the arc. This is evidence for either a small ($\sim8^{\circ}$) or moderate ($\sim41^{\circ}$) misalignment between the inner and outer disk, depending on the specific orientation of the near/far sides of the inner/outer disk. We compare the observed substructures in the ALMA observations with recent scattered light data from VLT/SPHERE of this object. In particular, the location of narrow shadow lanes in the SPHERE image combined with pressure scale height estimates, favor a large misalignment of about $41^{\circ}$. We discuss our findings in the context of a dust-trapping vortex, planet-carved gaps, and a misaligned inner disk due to the presence of an inclined companion to HD 143006., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication at ApJ Letters

We introduce the Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project (DSHARP), one of the initial Large Programs conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary goal of DSHARP is to find and characterize substructures in the spatial distributions of solid particles for a sample of 20 nearby protoplanetary disks, using very high resolution (0.035 arcsec, or 5 au FWHM) observations of their 240 GHz (1.25 mm) continuum emission. These data provide a first homogeneous look at the small-scale features in disks that are directly relevant to the planet formation process, quantifying their prevalence, morphologies, spatial scales, spacings, symmetry, and amplitudes, for targets with a variety of disk and stellar host properties. We find that these substructures are ubiquitous in this sample of large, bright disks. They are most frequently manifested as concentric, narrow emission rings and depleted gaps, although large-scale spiral patterns and small arc-shaped azimuthal asymmetries are also present in some cases. These substructures are found at a wide range of disk radii (from a few au to more than 100 au), are usually compact ($<$10 au), and show a wide range of amplitudes (brightness contrasts). Here we discuss the motivation for the project, describe the survey design and the sample properties, detail the observations and data calibration, highlight some basic results, and provide a general overview of the key conclusions that are presented in more detail in a series of accompanying articles. The deep trapping gate device concept for charged particle detection was recently introduced in Saclay/IRFU. It is based on an n-MOS structure in which a buried gate, located below the n-channel, collects carriers which are generated by ionizing particles. They deposit their energy in a volume which extends in the bulk, below the buried gate. The n-channel device is based on holes in-buried gate localization. Source-drain current modulation occurs, measurable during readout. The buried gate (Deep Trapping Gate or DTG) contains deep level centers which can be introduced during process or may be made with a Quantum Well. The device can be scaled down providing a micron range resolution. The proof of principle for such a device was verified using 2D device and process simulations. Work under way focusses on the study of building blocks. In this contribution, the pixel proof of design, using existing fabrication techniques will be discussed first. The use of this pixel for photon imaging will be discussed
