The total area under cereals during 2018 remained at a long-term stable level of about 1.7 million hectares. Maize and wheat are the most important crops grown in the Republic of Serbia. In the structure of harvested areas under cereals, maize dominates (53%), followed by wheat (38%). The objective of this paper was to determine if there was a recognisable trend line for the production of these crops in the 2007-2018 period. The yield data (Area harvested (ha), Production (tonnes), Production (t/ha)) were collected from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. Calculations of relevant and valid trends using central tendency measures, dispersion measures, relative ratios and percentage growth were used for statistical data processing. During the observation period, the average annual growth in maize yield was 6.38%, while the average annual growth in wheat yield was slightly lower, 2.00%. However, it is not possible to create an appropriate trend line for any of the variables in order to predict a future time period, since the coefficient of determination is low. Ukupna poljoprivredna površina pod strnim žitima u 2018. godini nije puno varirala u odnosu na prethodne godine i iznosila je oko 1.7 miliona hektara. Kukuruz i pšenica predstavljaju najznačajnije biljne kulture koje se gaje u Republici Srbiji. U strukturi požnjevenih površina pod žitaricama kukuruz je dominirao sa čak 53% i bio je praćen od strane pšenice sa 38%. Cilj ovog rada bio je utvrditi postoji li prepoznatljiva linija trenda proizvodnje ovih kultura za period od 2007. do 2018. godine. Podaci o prinosu (požnjevena površina (ha), proizvodnja (u tonama), prinos (t/ha)) prikupljeni su od Republičkog zavoda za statistiku. Za statističku obradu podataka korišćeni su proračuni relevantnih i validnih kretanja primenom mera centralne tendencije, mera disperzije, relativnih pokazatelja i procentualnog rasta. Prosečni godišnji rast prinosa kukuruza u posmatranom periodu iznosi 6,38%, dok je za pšenicu prosečan godišnji rast u posmatranom periodu nešto manji i iznosi 2,00%. Međutim, ni za jednu od promenljivih nije moguće napraviti odgovarajuću liniju trenda, u cilju predviđanja za budući vremenski period, jer je koeficijent determinacije mali.

The main goal of plant breeding is to improve quality traits, yield and resistance to abiotic and biotic stress factors. A thousand years ago, people selected the best plants, seeds or fruits to produce seed for new crops and food for human and animal nutrition. Modern plant breeding is based on genetic principles and contributes to increases in yield and quality components (contents of protein, amino acids, fat, sucrose, mineral elements etc.). Breeders in conventional breeding programs in the last six decades have made changes to plant phenotypes, significantly improved resistance to diseases, earliness, and frost and drought resistance, and improved scientific farming practices, baking and milling technologies, and beverage production technology. Through bioinformatics and improved technology, breeders have developed ways to improve and accelerate the breeding process to combine desired traits in new genotypes as well to operate at the level of individual cells and their chromosomes. Nowadays, modern biotechnology is used to improve human nutrition, and develop genotypes with significantly higher yields and quality compared with genotypes created by conventional breeding. By genetic modification it is possible to add, modify or delete a trait without interfering between two complete genomes. However, genetically modified crops can be used after their assessment in terms of human health, food safety and the environment. Основни циљ оплемењивања биљака је побољшање особина квалитета, приноса и отпорности на стресне абиотичке и биотичке факторе. Пре хиљаде година људи су бирали најбоље биљке, семе или плод за производњу семена за нове усеве и храну за исхрану људи и животиња. Савремено оплемењивање биљака засновано на генетичким принципима је допринело међусобном повећању приноса и побољшању компонентни квалитета (садржај протеина, аминокиселина, масти, сахарозе, минералних елемената итд.). Оплемењивачи у програмима конвенционалног оплемењивања у последњих шест деценија су остварили промене фенотипова биљака, значајно побољшање отпорности на болести, раностасност, отпорност на мраз и сушу. Такође је остварено побољшање технологије гајења и унапређење примене мера неге и заштите и жетве биљака, побољшање технологије млевења и печења, као и технологије производње пића. Коришћењем биоинформатике и побољшане технологије, оплемењивачи су развили начине за побољшање и убрзавање процеса хибридизације, комбинујући особине које су пожељне да имају новостворени генотипови, као и спровођење инжењеринга на нивоу појединачних ћелија и њихових хромозома. Данас се модерна биотехнологија користи за побољшање исхране људи и за развој генотипова са знатно већим приносом и квалитетом у поређењу са генотиповима створеним у конвенционалном оплемењивању. Генетичком модификацијом могуће је додати, изменити или избрисати (елиминисати) особину без нарушавања два комплетна генома. Међутим, генетички модификовани усеви могу се користити након процене њихове безбедности за здравље људи, оцене безбедности хране и животне средине.

peer-reviewed, The aim of this study was to compare efficiency of RP-HPLC (Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) and LOC (Lab-on-Chip) methods for wheat gluten protein quantification regarding clustering of wheat cultivars according to the genetic similarity (HMW-GS combinations), as well as to explore relations of these two methods to wheat quality parameters. For that purpose, wheat quality parameters (protein content, falling number, wet gluten content, gluten index, Farinograph, Extensograph, and Amylograph), as well as amounts of gliadin and glutenin fractions by RP-HPLC and LOC methods were determined in two different sets of wheat cultivars (Croatian and Serbian). The percentages of gluten proteins and the values of quality parameters were used to characterize the samples by principal component analysis (PCA). Gluten protein quantification performed by method based on the protein fraction separation by molecular weights (LOC) was better for grouping of genetically similar wheat cultivars than quantification of proteins separated by their different solubility in specified solvent gradient (RP-HPLC). RP-HPLC (reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography) is widely used to determine the amounts of the different gluten protein types. However, this method is time-consuming, especially at early stages of wheat breeding, when large number of samples needs to be analyzed. On the other hand, LoaC (Lab-on-a-Chip) technique has the potential for a fast, reliable, and automatable analysis of proteins. In the present study, benefits and limitations of Lab-on-a-Chip method over RP-HPLC method in gluten proteins evaluation were explored in order to determine in which way LoaC method should be improved in order to make its results more compliant with the results of RP-HPLC method. Strong correlation (P≤0.001) was found between numbers of HMW glutenin peaks determined by LoaC and RP-HPLC methods. Significant correlations (P≤0.05) were obtained between percentages of HMW and LMW glutenin subunits calculated with regard to total HMW + LMW area. Even more significant correlation (P≤0.001) was found when percentages of individual HMW areas were calculated with regard to total HMW. RP-HPLC method showed superiority in determination of gliadins since larger number and better resolution of gliadin peaks were obtained by this method.

The goals of the study were to determine what percentage of neoplasms with a bronchioloalveolar (BAC) component were considered pure BAC by current World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Next, we wanted to determine the number of mucinous BACs using histochemical staining with Alcian Blue PAS. Finally, we aimed to elucidate by immunohistochemistry the thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) frequency and cytokeratin 7 (CK7) expression, particularly in regard to the mucinous and non-mucinous subtypes of BAC tumors. We made a retrospective review of Hematoxylin and Eosin stained slides and classification of histologic grade, tumor subtype, and percentage of pure BAC pattern, with further characterization by histochemical staining for Alcian Blue PAS and Immunohistochemical staining for thyroid TTF-1 and CK7. Only 10 of 30 tumors examined could be classified as BAC by current strict WHO criteria. Nine cases were classified into non-mucinous and only one case was recognized as mucinous BAC, which showed positive staining for Alcian Blue PAS. TTF-1 positivity was in 100% of the non-mucinous BACs and complete absence of staining was in one case of mucinous BACs. CK7 expression in bronchioloalveolar carcinoma has demonstrated CK7 marked staining in 90% of non-mucinous BACs, also one case of mucinous BACs showed marked staining for TTF-1. BACs of mucinous morphology were notable for their conspicuous absence of TTF-1 immunoreactivity.
