Radiative lifetimes of three elements of the nitrogen group have been experimentally investigated at the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring Experiment (DESIREE) facility at Stockholm University. The experiments were performed through selective laser photodetachment of excited states of P$^-$, As$^-$ and Sb$^-$ ions stored in a cryogenic storage ring. The experimental results were compared with theoretically predicted lifetimes, yielding a mixture of very good agreements in some cases and large discrepancies in others. These results are part of our efforts to map out the lifetimes of all excited states in negative ions. This data can be used to benchmark atomic theories, in particularly with respect to the degree of electron correlation that is incorporated in various theoretical models.

High-precision measurements of the electron affinities (EA) of the three stable isotopes of silicon, $^{28}$Si, $^{29}$Si and $^{30}$Si, have been performed at the cryogenic electrostatic ion-beam storage ring DESIREE. The quantum states of the ions were manipulated using laser depletion, and the ions were photodetached by laser photodetachment threshold spectroscopy. These EA values are the first reported for $^{29}$Si$^-$ and $^{30}$Si$^-$ and provide a reduced uncertainty for $^{28}$Si$^-$. The resulting EAs are $EA(^{28}$Si$) = 1.38952201(17)$ eV, $EA(^{29}$Si$) = 1.38952172(12)$ eV and $EA(^{29}$Si$) = 1.38952078(12)$ eV, with the corresponding isotope shifts $IS(^{29-28}$Si$) = 0.29(16)$ micro eV and $IS(^{30-28}$Si$) = 1.23(16) $ micro eV. In addition to these measurements, the resolution and signal-to-background level was sufficient to reveal the hyperfine structure splitting in the $^{29}$Si$^-$ isotope, which we report to be $1.8(4) micro eV.

The radiative decay of excited states of the negative ion of rhodium, Rh$^-$, has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiments were conducted at the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring Experiment (DESIREE) facility at Stockholm University using selective photodetachment from a stored ion beam to monitor the time evolution of the excited state populations. The lifetimes of the Rh$^-$ $^3F_{3}$ and $^3F_{2}$ fine structure levels were measured to be 3.2(6)~s and 21(4)~s, respectively. An additional, previously unreported, higher-lying bound state of mixed $^1D_2+^3P_2+(4d^95s)^1D_2+^3F_2$ composition was observed and found to have a lifetime of 10.9(8)s. The binding energy of this state was determined to be in the interval $0.1584(2) $ eV $ < E_b < 0.2669(2)$ eV, using laser photodetachment threshold (LPT) spectroscopy. An autodetaching state with a lifetime of 480(10) microseconds was also observed. Theoretical calculations of the excited-state compositions, energies, and magnetic-dipole transition lifetimes were performed using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction methods. The calculated lifetimes of the $^3F_{3}$ and $^3F_{2}$ fine structure levels are in excellent agreement with the measured values. The present study should provide valuable insights into electron correlation effects in negative ions and forbidden radiative transitions.

We consider discrete subgroups of the group of orientation preserving isometries of the $m$-dimensional hyperbolic space, whose limit set is a $(m-1)$-dimensional real sphere, acting on the $n$-dimensional complex projective space for $n\geq m$, via an embedding from the group of orientation preserving isometries of the $m$-dimensional hyperbolic space to the group of holomorphic isometries of the $n$-dimensional complex hyperbolic space. We describe the Kulkarni limit set of any of these subgroups under the embedding as a real semi-algebraic set. Also, we show that the Kulkarni region of discontinuity can only have one or three connected components. We use the Sylvester's law of inertia when $n=m$. In the other cases, we use some suitable projections of the the $n$-dimensional complex projective space to the $m$-dimensional complex projective space.

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment prepares its Phase-2 upgrade for the high-luminosity era of the LHC operation (HL-LHC). Due to the increase of occupancy, trigger latency and rates, the full electronics of the CMS Drift Tube (DT) chambers will need to be replaced. In the new design, the time bin for the digitisation of the chamber signals will be of around 1~ns, and the totality of the signals will be forwarded asynchronously to the service cavern at full resolution. The new backend system will be in charge of building the trigger primitives of each chamber. These trigger primitives contain the information at chamber level about the muon candidates position, direction, and collision time, and are used as input in the L1 CMS trigger. The added functionalities will improve the robustness of the system against ageing. An algorithm based on analytical solutions for reconstructing the DT trigger primitives, called Analytical Method, has been implemented both as a software C++ emulator and in firmware. Its performance has been estimated using the software emulator with simulated and real data samples, and through hardware implementation tests. Measured efficiencies are 96 to 98\% for all qualities and time and spatial resolutions are close to the ultimate performance of the DT chambers. A prototype chain of the HL-LHC electronics using the Analytical Method for trigger primitive generation has been installed during Long Shutdown 2 of the LHC and operated in CMS cosmic data taking campaigns in 2020 and 2021. The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadron Calorimeter technological prototype completed in 2011 is a sampling calorimeter using Glass Resistive Plate Chamber (GRPC) detectors as the active medium. This technology is one of the two options proposed for the hadron calorimeter of the International Large Detector for the International Linear Collider. The prototype was exposed in 2015 to beams of muons, electrons, and pions of different energies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The use of this technology for future experiments requires a reliable simulation of its response that can predict its performance. GEANT4 combined with a digitization algorithm was used to simulate the prototype. It describes the full path of the signal: showering, gas avalanches, charge induction, and hit triggering. The simulation was tuned using muon tracks and electromagnetic showers for accounting for detector inhomogeneity and tested on hadronic showers collected in the test beam. This publication describes developments of the digitization algorithm. It is used to predict the stability of the detector performance against various changes in the data-taking conditions, including temperature, pressure, magnetic field, GRPC width variations, and gas mixture variations. These predictions are confronted with test beam data and provide an attempt to explain the detector properties. The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL) is the first technological prototype in a family of high-granularity calorimeters developed by the CALICE Collaboration to equip the experiments of future lepton colliders. The SDHCAL is a sampling calorimeter using stainless steel for absorber and Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPC) as a sensitive medium. The GRPC are read out by 1~cm $\times$ 1~cm pickup pads combined to a multi-threshold electronics. The prototype was exposed to hadron beams in both the CERN PS and the SPS beamlines in 2015 allowing the test of the SDHCAL in a large energy range from 3~GeV to 80~GeV. After introducing the method used to select the hadrons of our data and reject the muon and electron contamination, we present the energy reconstruction approach that we apply to the data collected from both beamlines and we discuss the response linearity and the energy resolution of the SDHCAL. The results obtained in the two beamlines confirm the excellent SDHCAL performance observed with the data collected with the same prototype in the SPS beamline in 2012. The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL) prototype using Glass Resistive Plate Chambers as a sensitive medium is the first technological prototype of a family of high-granularity calorimeters developed by the CALICE collaboration to equip the experiments of future leptonic colliders. It was exposed to beams of hadrons, electrons and muons several times in the CERN PS and SPS beamlines between 2012 and 2018. We present here a new method of particle identification within the SDHCAL using the Boosted Decision Trees (BDT) method applied to the data collected in 2015. The performance of the method is tested first with Geant4-based simulated events and then on the data collected by the SDHCAL in the energy range between 10 and 80~GeV with 10~GeV energy steps. The BDT method is then used to reject the electrons and muons that contaminate the SPS hadron beams.

The CMS drift tubes (DT) muon detector, built for withstanding the LHC expected integrated and instantaneous luminosities, will be used also in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) at a 5 times larger instantaneous luminosity and, consequently, much higher levels of radiation, reaching about 10 times the LHC integrated luminosity. Initial irradiation tests of a spare DT chamber at the CERN gamma irradiation facility (GIF++), at large ($\sim$O(100)) acceleration factor, showed ageing effects resulting in a degradation of the DT cell performance. However, full CMS simulations have shown almost no impact in the muon reconstruction efficiency over the full barrel acceptance and for the full integrated luminosity. A second spare DT chamber was moved inside the GIF++ bunker in October 2017. The chamber was being irradiated at lower acceleration factors, and only 2 out of the 12 layers of the chamber were switched at working voltage when the radioactive source was active, being the other layers in standby. In this way the other non-aged layers are used as reference and as a precise and unbiased telescope of muon tracks for the efficiency computation of the aged layers of the chamber, when set at working voltage for measurements. An integrated dose equivalent to two times the expected integrated luminosity of the HL-LHC run has been absorbed by this second spare DT chamber and the final impact on the muon reconstruction efficiency is under study. Direct inspection of some extracted aged anode wires presented a melted resistive deposition of materials. Investigation on the outgassing of cell materials and of the gas components used at the GIF++ are underway. Strategies to mitigate the ageing effects are also being developed. We present an experimental scheme that produces Doppler-free spectra of the $5s \to 6p $ second resonance transition in atomic rubidium. The experiment uses the saturation of the cascade fluorescence that occurs when thermal rubidium atoms interact with two counterpropagating $420 $ nm laser beams of comparable intensity. Part of the excited atomic population goes through the $5p_{3/2}$ level which then decays by emission of $780$ nm photons. Narrow dips appear in this otherwise broad $780$ nm fluorescence, which allows resolution of the $6p_{3/2}$ hyperfine structure. A rate equation model is used to interpret the spectra. It is also shown that these narrow peaks can be used to lock the frequency of the $420 $ nm laser. Using a second beam modulated in frequency produces three sets of spectra with known frequency spacings that can be used to perform an all-optical measurement of the hyperfine splittings of the $6p_{3/2} $ manifold in rubidium., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

A detailed investigation of hadronic interactions is performed using $\pi^-$-mesons with energies in the range 2--10 GeV incident on a high granularity silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter. The data were recorded at FNAL in 2008. The region in which the $\pi^-$-mesons interact with the detector material and the produced secondary particles are characterised using a novel track-finding algorithm that reconstructs tracks within hadronic showers in a calorimeter in the absence of a magnetic field. The principle of carrying out detector monitoring and calibration using secondary tracks is also demonstrated., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures

We present a study of the response of the highly granular Digital Hadronic Calorimeter with steel absorbers, the Fe-DHCAL, to positrons, muons, and pions with momenta ranging from 2 to 60 GeV/c. Developed in the context of the CALICE collaboration, this hadron calorimeter utilises Resistive Plate Chambers as active media, interspersed with steel absorber plates. With a transverse granularity of $1\,\times\,1\,$cm$^{2}$ and a longitudinal segmentation of 38 layers, the calorimeter counted 350,208 readout channels, each read out with single-bit resolution (digital readout). The data were recorded in the Fermilab test beam in 2010-11. The analysis includes measurements of the calorimeter response and the energy resolution to positrons and muons, as well as detailed studies of various shower shape quantities. The results are compared to simulations based on Geant4, which utilise different electromagnetic and hadronic physics lists.

This paper presents results obtained with the combined CALICE Scintillator Electromagnetic Calorimeter, Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter and Tail Catcher & Muon Tracker, three high granularity scintillator-SiPM calorimeter prototypes. The response of the system to pions with momenta between 4 GeV/c and 32 GeV/c is analysed, including the energy response, resolution, and longitudinal shower profiles. The results of a software compensation technique based on weighting according to hit energy are compared to those of a standard linear energy reconstruction. Knowledge of the Earth's atmospheric optical turbulence is critical for astronomical instrumentation. Not only does it enable performance verification and optimisation of existing systems but it is required for the design of future instruments. As a minimum this includes integrated astro-atmospheric parameters such as seeing, coherence time and isoplanatic angle, but for more sophisticated systems such as wide field adaptive optics enabled instrumentation the vertical structure of the turbulence is also required. Stereo-SCIDAR is a technique specifically designed to characterise the Earth's atmospheric turbulence with high altitude resolution and high sensitivity. Together with ESO, Durham University has commissioned a Stereo-SCIDAR instrument at Cerro Paranal, Chile, the site of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and only 20~km from the site of the future Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Here we provide results from the first 18 months of operation at ESO Paranal including instrument comparisons and atmospheric statistics. Based on a sample of 83 nights spread over 22 months covering all seasons, we find the median seeing to be 0.64" with 50% of the turbulence confined to an altitude below 2 km and 40% below 600 m. The median coherence time and isoplanatic angle are found as 4.18 ms and 1.75" respectively. A substantial campaign of inter-instrument comparison was also undertaken to assure the validity of the data. The Stereo-SCIDAR profiles (optical turbulence strength and velocity as a function of altitude) have been compared with the Surface-Layer SLODAR, MASS-DIMM and the ECMWF weather forecast model. The correlation coefficients are between 0.61 (isoplanatic angle) and 0.84 (seeing).

Real-time seeing estimation at the focus of a telescope is nowadays strongly emphasized as this knowledge virtually drives the dimensioning of adaptive optics systems and instrument operational aspects. In this context we study the interest of using active optics Shack-Hartmann (AOSH) sensor images to provide accurate estimate of the seeing. The AOSH practically delivers long exposure spot PSFs -- at the critical location of the telescope focus -- being directly related to the atmospheric seeing in the line of sight. Although AOSH sensors are not specified to measure spot sizes but slopes, we show that accurate seeing estimation from AOSH images can be obtained with a dedicated algorithm. The sensitivity and comparison of two algorithms to various parameters is analyzed in a systematic way, demonstrating that efficient estimation of the seeing can be obtained by adequate means., Comment: MNRAS 2012 accepted

Moving materials beyond Earth, whether spacecraft, living organisms, or both, is limited by mass constraints. Yet human survival requires an extensive infrastructure, from environmental regulation to life support. In practice this means habitats, food, oxygen, waste recycling, medicine and so on. Thus, there is a mismatch between what will be required in transit and at destination to fulfill dreams of human settlements and what can realistically moved there. Further, settlement off planet with current transportation systems requires the ability to operate independently of the Earth for prolonged periods of time, requiring long-term storage of supplies and the flexibilityto satisfy new needs.
