The life of Aboriginal people in Australia has been depending on nature since thousands of years ago. The sources of their food are entirely of natural origin. Although they live in a nomadic way, they still maintain and protect the nature around them in order not to damage and become extinct. This research aims to explore ecological literacy (eco-literacy) and local wisdom of Aboriginal people to maintain a mutual symbiosis between man and nature, reflected in a non-fiction book entitled Welcome to My Country written by Laklak Burarrwanga and Family. This is descriptive qualitative research using the ecocriticism approach. The result shows that Australian Aboriginal people have much knowledge of eco-literacy that they apply in everyday life to maintain the sustainability of the ecosystem. Besides, they also have local wisdom they believe will bring good things in their life in terms of protecting their natural environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the "2024 Year in Review" article from Writer's Digest, several significant developments in the publishing industry are highlighted. Romance and romantasy genres have experienced a surge in popularity, with increased sales and a growing number of romance bookstores. However, the Romance Writers of America (RWA) filed for bankruptcy due to low membership and the changing landscape of self-publishing. OpenAI faced legal challenges and licensing deals from media companies. Spotify's introduction of audiobooks as part of its subscription service has spurred growth in the audiobook market. Small Press Distribution (SPD), the only nonprofit book distributor in the U.S., closed its doors due to financial challenges. The success of self-help book "The Shadow Work Journal" on TikTok led to a seven-figure advance and a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster. Former Penguin Random House CEO launched Authors Equity, a publishing company that offers high profit-sharing arrangements to authors. Apple News has become a major news platform, paying millions of dollars to publishers. Costco announced that it will reduce its regular stocking of books, and concerns were raised about the political bias of The New York Times Bestseller List. Barnes & Noble purchased Tattered Cover Bookstore, and declining sales of middle-grade children's books raised concerns. The article also pays tribute to notable figures in the literary world who passed away in 2024. [Extracted from the article]

NONFICTION reading materials , *BACHELOR'S degree , *SOCIAL responsibility , *SUSTAINABLE development , *PRIMARY education - Abstract
The aim of this study is to diagnose the degree of knowledge and perception of the educational community around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) linked to the development of literary practices that integrate literary experience and social responsibility. The proposal is based on a bibliographic study that, organized based on the 5 central axes of the 2030 Agenda, delimits the treatment of literature in the Primary Education classroom as a transversal tool that enables training, awareness and achievement of the goals set. The work circumscribes a mixed paradigm based on the quantitative method to obtain results that justify the elaboration of a documentary bibliographic study made up mostly of illustrated fiction and non-fiction books. The quantitative tool for data collection is a questionnaire designed to determine the commitment of teachers, educators (school and home) and students of the Bachelor's Degrees in Education (n=112) with respect to the SDGs and their transfer to the classrooms of Primary Education. The results obtained show, on the one hand, the editorial neatness in this area and, on the other, the different perception regarding the assessment of the SDGs within the group studied. In over 300 videos, Deb had never seen Netty scratch her arm. Peltzman says that the hardest thing about writing humorous fiction is that the more you try to be funny, the less funny you are. And it's been a good way to stay sharp!" Lately, Adam has found himself more interested in returning to short fiction writing. Like most young writers, he explored some creative fiction and personal essay writing in high school, but Peltzman quickly found an affinity for script writing. [Extracted from the article]

The paper presents a reading of Helen Macdonald's non-fiction book H Is for Hawk, that focuses on the adoption of the temporal perspective of a predator (the instantaneousness of the attack and capture of the prey) instead of the typically human way of addressing the temporality spreading over a past, a present, and a future (memory, mourning, anxiety). Rethinking the inherited cultural practice of keeping and taming goshawks, the British writer narrates the process of mental merging with the female goshawk she trains. Through her engagement as an austringer (keeper of hawks), she also questions such categories as gender, class, and nationality. In parallel to her own experience, she reads the personal story of yet another transgressive austringer, the homosexual author T. H. White. This double line of vital/textual experience deconstructs the dominant cultural stance of heterosexual masculinity and sketches a peculiar queertopia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes Domènec Guansé's critical attention to travel literature in Catalan newspapers, which experiences a major revival from middle 1920's to the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The introduction of that genre in Catalan literature is part of a wider context encouraging all ways of cultural modernity, such as magazines or non-fiction books. Guansé looks in detail at the most outstanding works by Nicolau M. Rubió i Tudurí, Enric Blanco and specially Aurora Bertrana. Her Paradisos oceànics is a milestone in travel books, both for its quality and documentary value and for non-literary issues: primarily the writer's female condition (paradigm of the new cultural role that women have to play) and the cosmopolitanism that it adds to literary circles. CONCENTRATION camps ,CRIMINAL codes ,NOBEL Prizes ,LITERARY form ,NONFICTION reading materials - Abstract
In his monumental non-fiction book, The Gulag Archipelago, Nobel Prize winning author Alexandr Solzhenitsyn illustrates real events in Soviet labor camps in literary form. The depiction of EVIL is shocking. The totalitarian Soviet regime subjected millions of people to a horrific fate. As is generally well-known, Solzhenitsyn spent eight years in a Soviet concentration camp. Mass terror was the essence of Soviet totalitarianism. Solzhenitsyn included a lecture on Soviet criminal law in his book, stressing the importance of Article 58 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union in authorizing this terrorism. Solzhenitsyn himself was not a lawyer. However, his conclusions were very accurate. Article 58 of the Criminal Code, which consisted of seventeen paragraphs, defined "counter-revolutionary offenses". They were obviously punished most severely. Article 58 became a weapon of terror for the Soviet authorities, who used it convict millions of innocent people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper focuses on various examples of Polish literary reportage which draw upon parable, that is, a didactic story aimed at conveying moral, religious, philosophical, or existential principles by means of allegory, symbolism, and metaphor. The main purpose of the research is to examine the way in which contemporary reporters make use of contrast and analogy as tools for transferring documented facts to a universal level. In the article, the mechanism of parabolization shaped by both these devices is considered first in terms of content of reportage publication, and then with reference to the structure of journalistic narrative. The initial study includes parabolic parallels and antithesis in non-fiction books by Wojciech Jagielski and Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska. The latter part discusses selected works by Mariusz Szczygieł and Witold Szabłowski regarding transcending literal meanings through the specific segmentation of body text. This dual analysis conducted in the paper is preceded by an introduction, in which the authoress argues the symbiotic relation between the notion of parable, the poetics of contrast, and the principle of analogy. She also presents the origins and development of parabolic reportage in twentieth-century Poland. A special emphasis is placed here on the so-called Aesopian language, which enabled reporters to pass the Communist censorship thanks to hidden political allusions and other features typical of parable. In the conclusion, the parabolic tendency is recognized as still valid in today's Polish reportage, though different in significance and strictly associated with literary techniques of contrast and analogy. The show follows four women, including a sexually neglected housewife, a polyamorous woman, a high school student who confronts her former teacher, and a fictionalized version of Taddeo herself. The performance of Betty Gilpin, who plays the housewife, is particularly captivating and overshadows the other characters. Nabokov is known for far-reaching statements about fate which might give the impression that he was a strong believer in predetermined outcomes. His novels, however, only in part support that view. The Gift is the only one that pictures the hero's life entirely directed by (kind) fate in every respect, from love to artistic expression; he has no say even in his own desires or creative impulses. The Defense and Lolita come close to the same power of fate, but it is not quite complete, as some decisions are made by characters and not predetermined. King, Queen, Knave is furthest from the fate model, for most turns result from ~rtha's will and wild chance (though one might argue that chance is fate in disguise). /(py2ue 6epeza, a non-fiction book, shows most clearly that the real Nabokov was very far from any simplistic view of human life, fate, chance or free will. The study reported on here used a corpus approach to identify approaches to the translation of English nonfiction titles into Arabic. The quantitative analysis shows that the literal translation approach takes a first seat featuring 76% of the titles in the corpus. The other translation approaches include employment of related words (9%), paraphrase/explication (7%), transliteration alone (7%), and adaptation (1%). The qualitative analysis revealed that title translation can be a critical and challenging task bounded by linguistic and socio-cultural factors, as well as commercial interests and ethical considerations that the translator needs to consider. Accordingly, the researcher explored the adequacy of the Arabic renditions by examining the linguistic accuracy and the preservation of source title functions as well as the totality of meaning, with reference to the target culture. With regard to the translation of nonfiction titles in this study, the literal translation approach effectively produces linguistically intact target titles which, in most cases, are in line with the target culture. Nevertheless, translators may resort to other approaches when literal translation fails to achieve a comparable linguistic, cultural, and commercial effect in the target language. YOUNG adults ,WRITING competitions ,NONFICTION reading materials - Abstract
Rashmi Sirdeshpande, the BookTrust charity's "writer in residence," is passionate about non-fiction books and their impact on children's lives. Sirdeshpande, who has autism and ADHD, sees her unique perspective as an asset in creating her books. She encourages readers to explore and form their own opinions through factual books. Sirdeshpande's advice to young people is to stay curious, ask questions, and find books that make them think, feel, laugh, and dream. On May 17th, children will have the opportunity to participate in Pyjamarama, a fundraising event for BookTrust where they can read books in their pajamas. [Extracted from the article]

In this essay, I undertake an analysis of Luis Alberto Urrea's non-fiction book By the Lake of Sleeping Children (1996), which portrays a community of trash pickers and orphans in Tijuana at a moment in which the effects of NAFTA and an increasingly militarized approach to policing the US-Mexico border were taking shape. My engagement with the text combines close reading with concepts from both ecocriticism and biopolitics in order to tease out the way in which Urrea's vignettes trouble received notions of progress, freedom, and containment. By considering the book's deployment of two descriptive techniques for rendering the garbage dump and other spaces--one, a technique I call "time-lapse description" and the other, the insistent use of lists--I propose that the border zone that Urrea depicts is a space from which to think through the troubling and mutually-imbricated environmental, political, and economic crises that are paradoxically exceptional and exemplary of the current order of things. This study aimed to investigate the effect of gender on the amount and type of reading. This study was descriptive. The research population consisted of people over 15 years of age in Ahvaz city. A multistage random sampling technique was used, and the data were collected using a questionnaire. The independent t-test and contingency table were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that gender could affect reading, and women had more reading time than men. Also, there were differences in reading interests based on gender. Women were more likely than men to read popular books. Still, men were more elitist and were more likely to read nonfiction books than popular works. Men were more likely to read intellectual and cultural magazines, while women tended to read more popular ones. Besides, women and men had different reading interests in different sections of the newspapers. The deep familiarity of readers with discovering the level and type of reading and defining a developmental plan for reading can provide a valuable guide to policymaking for promoting reading by trusted institutions. Aravind Adiga's 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning novel, The White Tiger, both accommodates and provokes a variety of voices and discourses, evoking and dealing with India's past, present, and future, thus highlighting its author's dialogic vision. Although postcolonial and posthumanist approaches are worth exploring at length in this very challenging text, the current starts from the novel's initial "conversation" with a controversial non-fiction book, Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat, and the theory of the ten flatteners that reshape globalization, with Bangalore as the then (2006) neoliberal hub of the world. Using the patterns of the frame narrative of the Arabian Nights and of the European epistolary novel, the text under investigation dramatizes and transfigures the dark side of neoliberalism by means of the imaginary conversation between a murderer turned successful entrepreneur and the leader of the world's most prominent rising economic tiger. NONFICTION reading materials , *VOICE analysis , *STUDENT teachers , *READING promotion , *BOOKS & reading , *CHILDREN with dyslexia - Abstract
This work is focused on establishing the basis for a model of reader training supported by the illustrated non-fiction book (TABERNERO, 2018). It is considered to put the focus of analysis on the voice of the future mediators of reading promotion in schools, which is why in this study a diachronic vision of the figure of the teacher was chosen, starting with the initial training and ending with their professional performance. Our research is qualitative, through semi-structured interviews with student teachers (in their various formative moments: undergraduate and graduate) and active teachers. The participants' viewpoint, based on biographical narratives (CHÁRRIEZ, 2012), will serve to bring together the concept of non-fiction books and social reading practices (RUBIO, 2007), which show the changes that the educational system needs to make in order to train readers. Views Book Attention Span Gloria Mark William Collins MANY of us have some sense of what an "attention span" is. Over 15-odd years, Mark has empirically tracked patterns of "attention-switching", showing how our focus roams about - between the physical world and the digital one, but also from task to task on our devices. Another treatment of the subject could have been fearmongering or fatalistic about our future with tech, but Mark is even-handed and generally optimistic about our chances of taking back control of our devices and attention. Hal Lindsey & Carlson's, 1970 book, The Late Great Planet Earth, was the best-selling non-fiction book of the 1970s. In it, using the eschatology of premillennial dispensationalism commonly believed by American evangelicals, he conflates biblical prophecy with current geopolitical conflicts. He exploits the uncertainty of the nuclear age, civil rights movement, and 'wars and rumours of wars' in Asia by giving readers a certain explanation: Christ will soon return. Within his book, Lindsey provides two maps depicting his narrative for the battle of Armageddon. The maps are devoid of borders, and only show troop movement via thick black arrows. This article focuses on these arrows and their geopolitical function. The article argues, beyond symbolizing mobility, that arrows on maps also symbolize future anticipatory cartographic temporalities. It is theorized that Lindsey's arrows potentiate and help actualize a narrow geopolitical future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
