1. Associated W±D(⁎) production at the LHC and prospects to observe double parton interactions

Abstract

Associated production of charged gauge bosons and charged charmed mesons at the LHC is considered in the framework of kt-factorization approach. Theoretical predictions are compared with ATLAS data, and reasonably good agreement is found. Predictions on the same-sign W±D± configurations are presented including single parton scattering and double parton scattering contributions. The latter are shown to dominate over the former, thus giving evidence that the proposed process can serve as another indicator of double parton interactions. Abstract

Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5 < eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm scheme is in agreement with the data., 18 pages including 4 figures

Abstract

The gluon momentum density xg ( x , Q 2 ) of the proton was extracted at Q 2 = 20 GeV 2 for small values of x between 4 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F 2 at low x constrained by measurementsfrom NMC at larger x ; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x .

Abstract

We investigate the possibility to detect the scalar Higgs boson decay $H\to b\bar b$ in the associated $Z$ and $b\bar b$ production at the LHC using the $k_T$-factorization QCD approach. Our consideration is based on the off-shell (i.e. depending on the transverse momenta of initial quarks and gluons) production amplitudes of $q^* \bar q^* \to Z H \to Z q^\prime \bar q^\prime$, $q^* \bar q^* \to Z q^\prime \bar q^\prime$ and $g^* g^* \to Z q^\prime \bar q^\prime$ partonic subprocesses supplemented with the Catani-Ciafoloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) dynamics of parton densities in a proton. We argue that the $H \to b\bar b$ signal could be observed at large transverse momenta near Higgs boson peak despite the overwhelming QCD background, and point out an important role of angular correlations between the produced $Z$ boson and $b$-quarks.

Abstract

In the framework of the $k_T$-factorization approach, we analyse the inclusive and inelastic production of $J/\psi$ particles in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering. We take into account both colour-singlet and colour-octet production channels. We inspect the sensitivity of theoretical predictions to the choice of model parameters. Our theoretical results agree reasonably well with recent experimental data collected by the collaboration H1 at HERA., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with a colourless object in the proton., Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract

We consider the Higgs boson production at high energy hadron colliders in the framework of the k_T-factorization approach. The attention is focused on the dominant gluon-gluon fusion subprocess. We calculate the total cross section and transverse momentum distributions of the inclusive Higgs production using unintegrated gluon distributions in a proton obtained from the full CCFM evolution equation. We show that k_T-factorization gives a possibility to investigate the associated Higgs boson and jets production. We calculate the transverse momentum distributions and study the Higgs-jet and jet-jet azimuthal correlations in the Higgs + one or two jet production processes. We demonstrate the importance of the higher-order corrections within the k_T-factorization approach. These corrections should be developed and taken into account in the future applications., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We consider the prompt photon production at high energy hadron colliders in the framework of k_T-factorization approach. The unintegrated quark and gluon distributions in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. The conservative error analisys is performed. We investigate both inclusive prompt photon and prompt photon and associated muon production rates. In Standard Model such events come mainly due to Compton scattering process where the final heavy (charm or bottom) quark produces a muon. The theoretical results are compared with recent experimental data taken by the D0 and CDF collaborations at Fermilab Tevatron. Our analysis also covers the azimuthal correlations between produced prompt photon and muon which can provide an important information about non-collinear parton evolution in a proton. Finally, we extrapolate the theoretical predictions to CERN LHC energies., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The production of $\phi$ mesons in the reaction $e^{+}p \rightarrow e^{+} \phi p$ ($\phi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$) at a median $Q^{2}$ of $10^{-4} \ \rm{GeV^2}$ has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The differential $\phi$ photoproduction cross section $d\sigma/dt$ has an exponential shape and has been determined in the kinematic range $0.1, Comment: 23 pages, including 6 post script figures

Abstract

This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep $\rightarrow$ e~\jpsi~p for $Q^2 < 4$ GeV$^2$ at $\sqrt s = 296$ GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5~pb$^{-1}$, using the ZEUS detector. The \jpsi~was detected in its $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ and $\rm \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be $52^{ \ +7}_{-12}\pm 10$~nb at an average $\gamma$p centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and $71^{+13}_{-20}\pm 12$~nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low $x$ in the proton is assumed., Comment: 21 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract

πΔ photoproduction is considered within a framework of Regge pole model taking into account conspiracy relations (constraint equations) between scattering amplitudes at t = 0. Conspiracy and evasion solutions of constraint equations lead to different results both for differential πΔ photoproduction cross section and for density-matrix elements of Δ-resonance. The comparison with available experimental data indicates that for the case considered conspiracy is more preferable than evasion.

Abstract

The production of φ mesons in the reaction e+p → e+φp (φ → K+K−), for 7 Q 2 GeV 2 and virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies (W) in the range 42–134 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy data at similar Q 2, the results show that the γ ∗ p → φp cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the γ ∗ p → ϱ 0 p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of σ(φ) σ(ϱ 0 ) , which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 ± 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 ± 0.05 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q 2 of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of ≈ 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q 2 the value of 2 9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.

Abstract

Jet photoproduction, where the two highest transverse energy ($\ETJ$) jets have $\ETJ$ above 6 GeV and a jet-jet invariant mass above 23~GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. Resolved and direct photoproduction samples have been separated. The cross section as a function of the angle between the jet-jet axis and the beam direction in the dijet rest frame has been measured for the two samples. The measured angular distributions differ markedly from each other. They agree with the predictions of QCD calculations, where the different angular distributions reflect the different spins of the quark and gluon exchanged in the hard subprocess., 20 pages including 4 figures
