Abstract Large low shear-wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle are the largest geological structures on Earth, but their origin and age remain highly enigmatic. Geological constraints suggest the stability of the LLSVPs since at least 200 million years ago. Here, we conduct numerical modeling of mantle convection with plate-like behavior that yields a Pacific-like girdle of mantle downwelling which successfully forms two antipodal basal mantle structures similar to the LLSVPs. Our parameterized results optimized to reflect LLSVP features exhibit velocities for the basal mantle structures that are ~ 4 times slower than the ambient mantle if they are thermochemical, while the velocity is similar to the ambient mantle if purely thermal. The sluggish motion of the thermochemical basal mantle structures in our models permits the notion that geological data from hundreds of millions of years ago are related to modern LLSVPs as they are essentially stationary over such time scales.

Abstract The redox state of a planetary mantle affects its thermal evolution. The redox evolution of lunar mantle, however, remains unclear due to limited oxygen fugacity (fO2) constraints from young lunar samples. Here, we report vanadium (V) oxybarometers on olivine and spinel conducted on 27 Chang’e-5 basalt fragments from 2.0 billion years ago. These fragments yield an average fO2 of ΔIW -0.84 ± 0.65 (2σ), which closely aligns with the Apollo samples from 3.6–3.0 billion years ago. This temporal uniformity indicates the lunar mantle remained reduced. This observation reveals that the processes responsible for oxidizing mantles of Earth and Mars either did not occur or had negligible oxidizing effects on the Moon. The long-term reduced mantle may lead to a distinctive volatile degassing pathway for the Moon. It could also make the lunar mantle more difficult to melt, preventing internal heat dissipation and consequently resulting in a slow cooling rate.

Abstract The geodynamic processes that formed Earth’s earliest continents are intensely debated. Particularly, the transformation from ancient crustal nuclei into mature Archaean cratons is unclear, primarily owing to the paucity of well-preserved Eoarchaean–Palaeoarchaean ‘protocrust’. Here, we report a newly identified Palaeoarchaean continental fragment—the Baishanhu nucleus—in northeastern North China Craton. U–Pb geochronology shows that this nucleus preserves five major magmatic events during 3.6–2.5 Ga. Geochemistry and zircon Lu–Hf isotopes reveal ancient 4.2–3.8 Ga mantle extraction ages, as well as later intraplate crustal reworking. Crustal architecture and zircon Hf–O isotopes indicate that proto-North China first formed in a stagnant/squishy lid geodynamic regime characterised by plume-related magmatic underplating. Such cratonic growth and maturation were prerequisites for the emergence of plate tectonics. Finally, these data suggest that North China was part of the Sclavia supercraton and that the Archaean onset of subduction occurred asynchronously worldwide.

The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha′apai volcano erupted on 15 January 2022, launching Lamb waves and gravity waves into the atmosphere. In this study, we present results using 13 globally distributed meteor radars and identify the volcanogenic gravity waves in the mesospheric/lower thermospheric winds. Leveraging the High-Altitude Mechanistic general Circulation Model (HIAMCM), we compare the global propagation of these gravity waves. We observed an eastward-propagating gravity wave packet with an observed phase speed of 240 ± 5.7 m s−1 and a westward-propagating gravity wave with an observed phase speed of 166.5 ± 6.4 m s−1. We identified these waves in HIAMCM and obtained very good agreement of the observed phase speeds of 239.5 ± 4.3 and 162.2 ± 6.1 m s−1 for the eastward the westward waves, respectively. Considering that HIAMCM perturbations in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere were the result of the secondary waves generated by the dissipation of the primary gravity waves from the volcanic eruption, this affirms the importance of higher-order wave generation. Furthermore, based on meteor radar observations of the gravity wave propagation around the globe, we estimate the eruption time to be within 6 min of the nominal value of 15 January 2022 04:15 UTC, and we localized the volcanic eruption to be within 78 km relative to the World Geodetic System 84 coordinates of the volcano, confirming our estimates to be realistic.

Abstract The reorientation of Earth through rotation of its solid shell relative to its spin axis is known as True polar wander (TPW). It is well-documented at present, but the occurrence of TPW in the geologic past remains controversial. This is especially so for Late Jurassic TPW, where the veracity and dynamics of a particularly large shift remain debated. Here, we report three palaeomagnetic poles at 153, 147, and 141 million years (Myr) ago from the North China craton that document an ~ 12° southward shift in palaeolatitude from 155–147 Myr ago (~1.5° Myr−1), immediately followed by an ~ 10° northward displacement between 147–141 Myr ago (~1.6° Myr−1). Our data support a large round-trip TPW oscillation in the past 200 Myr and we suggest that the shifting back-and-forth of the continents may contribute to the biota evolution in East Asia and the global Jurassic–Cretaceous extinction and endemism.

BackgroundDespite the potential benefits of using eHealth, sociodemographic disparities exist in eHealth use, which threatens to further widen health equity gaps. The literature has consistently shown age and education to be associated with eHealth use, while the findings for racial and ethnic disparities are mixed. However, previous disparities may have narrowed as health care interactions shifted to web-based modalities for everyone because of the COVID-19 pandemic. ObjectiveThis study aims to provide an updated examination of sociodemographic disparities that contribute to the health equity gap related to using eHealth for information seeking using 3 time points. MethodsData for this study came from the nationally representative 2018 (n=3504), 2020 (n=3865), and 2022 (n=6252) time points of the Health Information National Trends Survey. Logistic regression was used to regress the use of eHealth for information seeking on race and ethnicity, sex, age, education, income, health status, and year of survey. Given the consistent association of age with the dependent variable, analyses were stratified by age cohort (millennials, Generation X, baby boomers, and silent generation) to compare individuals of similar age. ResultsFor millennials, being female, attaining some college or a college degree, and reporting an annual income of US $50,000-$74,999 or >US $75,000 were associated with the use of eHealth for information seeking. For Generation X, being female, having attained some college or a college degree, reporting an annual income of US $50,000-$74,999 or >US $75,000, better self-reported health, and completing the survey in 2022 (vs 2018; odds ratio [OR] 1.80, 95% CI 1.11-2.91) were associated with the use of eHealth for information seeking. For baby boomers, being female, being older, attaining a high school degree, attaining some college or a college degree, reporting an annual income of US $50,000-$74,999 or >US $75,000, and completing the survey in 2020 (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.15-2.12) and 2022 (OR 4.04, 95% CI 2.77-5.87) were associated with the use of eHealth for information seeking. Among the silent generation, being older, attaining some college or a college degree, reporting an annual income of US $50,000-$74,999 or >US $75,000, and completing the survey in 2022 (OR 5.76, 95% CI 3.05-10.89) were associated with the use of eHealth for information seeking. ConclusionsBaby boomers may have made the most gains in using eHealth for information seeking over time. The race and ethnicity findings, or lack thereof, may indicate a reduction in racial and ethnic disparities. Disparities based on sex, education, and income remained consistent across all age groups. This aligns with health disparities literature focused on individuals with lower socioeconomic status, and more recently on men who are less likely to seek health care compared to women.

Abstract In a deforming partially molten rock, melt concentrates into a grain‐scale melt pocket aligned at a preferred orientation (melt‐preferred orientation, or MPO). However, observing this texture alone provides limited information on the 3D orientation and geometry of these melt pockets, which are critical parameters for estimating permeability. Here, we modeled the MPO of experimentally deformed peridotites by simulating melt streaks arising from melt pockets of various shapes and 3D orientations. The model aims to identify 3D distribution and characteristics of melt pockets that could account for the observed length, thickness, and the probability of melt streaks. Results show that melt pockets at preferred orientation exhibit greater length, thickness, and number density compared to those perpendicular. These results can be incorporated into the simulation of melt flow through individual melt pockets, which allows us to estimate the permeability corresponding to the observed MPO. We found that the permeability of vertically compressed peridotites increases with increasing compressive strain and a more elongated and thickened shape for melt pocket aligned at preferred orientation. The vertical permeability in the sample with 30% compressive strain is at least 40 times larger than that of an undeformed sample. For peridotites deformed under simple shear, the permeability exhibits an anisotropy of at least three. Such anisotropic permeability, coupled with the formation of melt‐rich bands and other melt channels, is believed to cause lateral melt focusing beneath mid‐ocean ridges.

Avian malaria is expanding upslope with warmer temperatures and driving multiple species of Hawaiian birds towards extinction. Methods to reduce malaria transmission are urgently needed to prevent further declines. Releasing Wolbachia-infected incompatible male mosquitoes could suppress mosquito populations and releasing Wolbachia-infected female mosquitoes (or both sexes) could reduce pathogen transmission if the Wolbachia strain reduced vector competence. We cleared Culex quinquefasciatus of their natural Wolbachia pipientis wPip infection and transinfected them with Wolbachia wAlbB isolated from Aedes albopictus. We show that wAlbB infection was transmitted transovarially, and demonstrate cytoplasmic incompatibility with wild-type mosquitoes infected with wPip from Oahu and Maui, Hawaii. We measured vector competence for avian malaria, Plasmodium relictum, lineage GRW4, of seven mosquito lines (two with wAlbB; three with natural wPip infection, and two cleared of Wolbachia infection) by allowing them to feed on canaries infected with recently collected field isolates of Hawaiian P. relictum. We tested 73 groups (Ntotal = 1176) of mosquitoes for P. relictum infection in abdomens and thoraxes 6-14 days after feeding on a range of parasitemias from 0.028% to 2.49%, as well as a smaller subset of salivary glands. We found no measurable effect of Wolbachia on any endpoint, but strong effects of parasitemia, days post feeding, and mosquito strain on both abdomen and thorax infection prevalence. These results suggest that releasing male wAlbB-infected C. quinquefasciatus mosquitoes could suppress wPip-infected mosquito populations, but would have little positive or negative impact on mosquito vector competence for P. relictum if wAlbB became established in local mosquito populations. More broadly, the lack of Wolbachia effects on vector competence we observed highlights the variable impacts of both native and transinfected Wolbachia infections in mosquitoes.

Abstract The interplay between continental motions during the assembly of Pangaea and late Palaeozoic climate change, including severe glaciation and global aridification, remains enigmatic. Here we identify the provenance of Permian–Early Triassic sediments that recorded climate change of North China and estimate palaeoelevation to constrain tectonic-climate interaction during the assembly of northeast Pangaea. Detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf analysis indicates the sediments were locally sourced from the ancient basement and associated with a late Palaeozoic (410–260 million years ago) continental arc, devoid of input from juvenile arcs of the Altaids. These sediments were interpreted as deposited in a retroarc foreland basin ascribed to subduction of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean. Crustal thickness estimated from whole-rock La/Yb yields an average value of 58 ± 11 km, which corresponds to a palaeoelevation of 3.8 ± 0.7 km. The results reveal the existence in North China of an orogenic plateau comparable to the Altiplano of the Andes that blocked moisture transport from the ocean and served as an important orographic barrier to trigger Permian aridification.

Abstract The history of mare volcanism critically informs the thermal evolution of the Moon. However, young volcanic eruptions are poorly constrained by remote observations and limited samples, hindering an understanding of mare eruption flux over time. The Chang’e-5 mission returned the youngest lunar basalts thus far, offering a window into the Moon’s late-stage evolution. Here, we investigate the mineralogy and geochemistry of 42 olivine and pyroxene crystals from the Chang’e-5 basalts. We find that almost all of them are normally zoned, suggesting limited magma recharge or shallow-level assimilation. Most olivine grains record a short timescale of cooling. Thermal modeling used to estimate the thickness and volume of the volcanism sampled by Chang’e-5 reveals enhanced magmatic flux ~2 billion years ago, suggesting that while overall lunar volcanic activity may decrease over time, episodic eruptions at the final stage could exhibit above average eruptive fluxes, thus revising models of lunar thermal evolution.

Abstract Orbital observations of non-mare, highly silicic volcanic constructs on the Moon challenge the conventional view of the formation of silicic crusts in the presence of water and plate tectonics—the former the Moon has in very short supply and the latter it likely never ever had. Revealing the silica-rich magma origin may reshape our understanding of early planetary crust formation. However, the cause of lunar silicic magmatism remains enigmatic. Here we conduct phase equilibrium simulations for potential lunar igneous lithologies that demonstrate that the compositions of silicic volcanic constructs can be produced by partial melting of KREEP (potassium, rare earth elements, and phosphorus) basalts. Either internal radiogenic heating or external impact bombardment can provide the heat needed for KREEP basalt melting. Combined with silica-rich materials identified on other rocky planets, we suggest that highly evolved crusts might be more prevalent in the early solar system than anticipated as they can originate from crustal remelting in the absence of water and plate tectonics.

BackgroundConventional medical education lacks the lived experiences of patients which may authentically convey the social determinants of health (SDOH) and resulting health disparities. Videos of first-person patient narratives may prove a valuable education tool in this regard. The objective of this study is to investigate how patient demographics, satisfaction with care, and patient-physician relationships influence obstetric patient interest and willingness to contribute to a SDOH video curriculum by sharing their lived experiences through first-person narratives.MethodsStudy design included an anonymous, cross-sectional survey and an optional semi-structured telephone interview. Participants were 18 years old with a live-birth delivery 0.001). Major themes from telephone interviews reflected enthusiasm for first-person patient narratives and perceived benefits of using patient experiences to educate physicians on SDOH. However, participants cited barriers to disclosing SDOH including brief and strictly clinical interactions with physicians, lack of continuity of care, and fear of being judged by physicians.ConclusionWhile most participants recognized the utility of addressing social needs in medical education and reported satisfaction with their obstetricians and care, these factors did not uniformly translate into willingness to contribute first-person patient narratives. To improve the representation of patients from racial, ethnic, gender, linguistic, and sexual minorities into medical curricula, further research and strategies are needed to overcome the barriers discouraging patient disclosure of social needs to physicians.

While research demonstrates that family support is essential for doctoral students, research detailing institutional efforts to involve families is limited. We developed the GAIN Scholars program, consisting of two 3-week-long boot camps for incoming first-generation and historically marginalized doctoral students. Quantitative data were collected from 38 doctoral students in the GAIN Scholars program (n = 22) and the control (n = 16). One key component of this program was family support for doctoral students. Family members (n = 15) were invited to the opening ceremony, a day of programming, and online activities. Pre- and post-test measures indicate participants had a greater ability to identify resources, a greater ability to identify important life values as they impact resource identification decision-making, and a greater ability to identify complex environments and means for situational adaption, suggesting the program increased doctoral students’ skills related to navigating environments, resources, and decision-making. Qualitative findings from doctoral students and their family members offered praise for the program and appreciation for the support opportunities. These results indicate that programs such as this—that foster connections among graduate students and their families—can be potentially beneficial in helping graduate students not only stay but thrive in their programs.

Here we consider the communications tactics appropriate for a group of agents that need to "swarm" together in a challenging communications environment. Swarms are increasingly important in a number of applications, including land, air, sea and space exploration, and their constituent agents could be satellites, drones, or other autonomous vehicles. A particularly difficult problem is to autonomously connect a swarm of agents together in a situation where stringent communication constraints are present, whether due to a need for stealth, restricted on-board power, external requirements to avoid certain broadcast directions, or equipment & hardware limitations. Here we present a novel, discrete, geometry-free model applicable to multi-agent swarm communications where a group of agents need to connect together and where the constraints on the communications dominate the algorithmic outcomes. No global knowledge of the agent locations is held and hence our framework proposes agent-centric performance metrics. We demonstrate our model using a set of candidate connectivity tactics and we show how simulated outcome distributions, risks and connectivity depend on the ratio of information gain to information loss. We also show that checking for excessive round-trip-times can be an effective minimal-information filter for determining which agents to no longer target with messages. The framework and algorithms that are presented here have wider application in testing efficient communication tactics across agent swarms in designated scenarios and testing the connectivity outcomes for future systems and missions.

Abstract The left‐lateral Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) system is the northern boundary of the Tibetan Plateau resulted from the India–Eurasia continental collision. How intracontinental deformation across the central ATF responds to the distal collision remains elusive, primarily due to unclear crustal structure. We obtained detailed crustal structure across the central ATF using receiver functions recorded by ∼NW–SE oriented linear dense array. The images reveal the Tarim lower crust is underthrusting beneath the Tibetan Plateau and reaches to a maximum depth of ∼75 km and undergoing partial eclogitization. The two south‐dipping interfaces imaged beneath the Altyn Tagh Range (ATR) represent the thrusting Northern Altyn Fault and its branch fault. Oblique convergent forces extruded upper crustal materials along the thrust faults, creating the pop‐up structure of ATR, supported by low Vp/Vs ratios. Our balanced cross‐section for the Moho suggests intracontinental deformation in the ATR has accelerated since the late Miocene.

The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha′apai volcano eruption was a unique event that caused many atmospheric phenomena around the globe. In this study, we investigate the atmospheric gravity waves in the mesosphere/lower-thermosphere (MLT) launched by the volcanic explosion in the Pacific, leveraging multistatic meteor radar observations from the Chilean Observation Network De Meteor Radars (CONDOR) and the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster in Fennoscandia. MLT winds are computed using a recently developed 3DVAR+DIV algorithm. We found eastward- and westward-traveling gravity waves in the CONDOR zonal and meridional wind measurements, which arrived 12 and 48 h after the eruption, and we found one in the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster that arrived 27.5 h after the volcanic detonation. We obtained observed phase speeds for the eastward great circle path at both locations of about 250 m s−1, and they were 170–150 m s−1 for the opposite propagation direction. The intrinsic phase speed was estimated to be 200–212 m s−1. Furthermore, we identified a potential lamb wave signature in the MLT winds using 5 min resolved 3DVAR+DIV retrievals.

Abstract Developing vascular networks that integrate with the host circulation and support cells engrafted within engineered tissues remains a key challenge in tissue engineering. Most previous work in this field has focused on developing new methods to build human vascular networks within engineered tissues prior to their implant in vivo, with substantively less attention paid to the role of the host in tissue vascularization and engraftment. Here, we assessed the role that different host animal models and anatomic implant locations play in vascularization and cardiomyocyte survival within engineered tissues. We found major differences in the formation of graft-derived blood vessels and survival of cardiomyocytes after implantation of identical tissues in immunodeficient athymic nude mice versus rats. Athymic mice supported robust guided vascularization of human microvessels carrying host blood but relatively sparse cardiac grafts within engineered tissues, regardless of implant site. Conversely, athymic rats produced substantive inflammatory changes that degraded grafts (abdomen) or disrupted vascular patterning (heart). Despite disrupted vascular patterning, athymic rats supported > 3-fold larger human cardiomyocyte grafts compared to athymic mice. This work demonstrates the critical importance of the host for vascularization and engraftment of engineered tissues, which has broad translational implications across regenerative medicine.

Palaeomagnetic data from South China and compiled reliable palaeopoles from 4 other continents reveals a ~50˚ true polar wander (TPW) event occurring 450–440 million years ago. Sweeping Gondwana across the South Pole, this TPW event induced the Ordovician glaciation and mass extinction.

Only subduction zone can produce Ba-rich TTG, representing a proxy for the onset of subduction. Statistical increases in Ba contents of Archaean TTGs reveal the diachronous onset of subduction from regional at 4 Ga to globally complete after 2.7 Ga

Meteor radars have become widely used instruments to study atmospheric dynamics, particularly in the 70 to 110 km altitude region. These systems have been proven to provide reliable and continuous measurements of horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Recently, there have been many attempts to utilize specular and/or transverse scatter meteor measurements to estimate vertical winds and vertical wind variability. In this study we investigate potential biases in vertical wind estimation that are intrinsic to the meteor radar observation geometry and scattering mechanism, and we introduce a mathematical debiasing process to mitigate them. This process makes use of a spatiotemporal Laplace filter, which is based on a generalized Tikhonov regularization. Vertical winds obtained from this retrieval algorithm are compared to UA-ICON model data. This comparison reveals good agreement in the statistical moments of the vertical velocity distributions. Furthermore, we present the first observational indications of a forward scatter wind bias. It appears to be caused by the scattering center's apparent motion along the meteor trajectory when the meteoric plasma column is drifted by the wind. The hypothesis is tested by a radiant mapping of two meteor showers. Finally, we introduce a new retrieval algorithm providing a physically and mathematically sound solution to derive vertical winds and wind variability from multistatic meteor radar networks such as the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster (NORDIC) and the Chilean Observation Network De meteOr Radars (CONDOR). The new retrieval is called 3DVAR+DIV and includes additional diagnostics such as the horizontal divergence and relative vorticity to ensure a physically consistent solution for all 3D winds in spatially resolved domains. Based on this new algorithm we obtained vertical velocities in the range of w = ± 1–2 m s−1 for most of the analyzed data during 2 years of collection, which is consistent with the values reported from general circulation models (GCMs) for this timescale and spatial resolution.

Abstract Slab rollback during subduction plays a key role in controlling continental growth at convergent plate boundaries. The dynamics of currently subducting slabs can be precisely constrained using geophysical techniques. In contrast, ancient episodes of slab rollback can be difficult to constrain, yet are critical to unlocking the tectonic evolution of long‐lived orogens such as the Phanerozoic Australian Tasmanides of eastern Gondwana. Recognition of ancient slab rollback relies on the identification of the progressive migration of magmatic arcs. Here, we investigate the timing and isotopic variation of ∼90 km of the trans‐orogen migration of the Carboniferous Bathurst Batholith as a potential indicator of slab rollback. U–Pb–Hf isotopes, combined with a regional zircon Hf isotope data set, suggest that the eastward migration of the batholith over ∼18 Myr, from 340.1 to 322.4 Ma, records a maximum slab steepening rate of ∼0.6–1.2° Myr−1 in a relatively stable trench setting. These results provide a magmatic record of Carboniferous slab rollback and establish a missing link between the long‐lived Lachlan and New England orogens of the eastern Gondwanan Tasmanides.

The strength and configuration of the geomagnetic field control the average shape of the magnetosphere. The pure dipole assumption and the virtual dipole moment (VDM), determined by individual records, have been widely adopted to evaluate the strength of the geomagnetic field in geological time. However, such an assumption might not be valid during geomagnetic transitions, such as reversals and excursions. The traditional spherical harmonic modeling of the geomagnetic field could be difficult to implement because accurate global records are lacking. Here, we report that an empirical relationship exists between the ratio of the VDM to the true axial dipole moment (VDM/ADM) and the ratio of the power of the axial dipole to that of the non-axial dipole (AD/NAD) based on a new method utilizing globally distributed inclination records. The root mean square global deviation of inclination (RMSΔI) to the standard inclination distribution of the AD was fitted to the AD/NAD with a cubic polynomial by utilizing a large number of geodynamo simulations. Tests with geomagnetic field models showed that the AD/NAD derived from the RMSΔI agreed well with that calculated by using the Gauss coefficients, and the estimated ADM was consistent with the true value. Finally, the application of volcanic records during the Laschamp excursion showed the VDM might overestimate the ADM by a factor of 3. Our new method will be useful in future studies that characterize the configuration of the geomagnetic field and the strength of the axial dipole.

Ground-based remote sensing of atmospheric parameters is often limited to single station observations by vertical profiles at a certain geographic location. This is a limiting factor for investigating gravity wave dynamics as the spatial information is often missing, e.g., horizontal wavelength, propagation direction or intrinsic frequency. In this study, we present a new retrieval algorithm for multistatic meteor radar networks to obtain tomographic 3-D wind fields within a pre-defined domain area. The algorithm is part of the Agile Software for Gravity wAve Regional Dynamics (ASGARD) and called 3D-Var, and based on the optimal estimation technique and Bayesian statistics. The performance of the 3D-Var retrieval is demonstrated using two meteor radar networks: the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster and the Chilean Observation Network De Meteor Radars (CONDOR). The optimal estimation implementation provide statistically sound solutions and diagnostics from the averaging kernels and measurement response. We present initial scientific results such as body forces of breaking gravity waves leading to two counter-rotating vortices and horizontal wavelength spectra indicating a transition between the rotational k−3 and divergent k-5/3 mode at scales of 80–120 km. In addition, we performed a keogram analysis over extended periods to reflect the latitudinal and temporal impact of a minor sudden stratospheric warming in December 2019. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the 3D-Var algorithm to perform large-scale retrievals to derive meteorological wind maps covering a latitude region from Svalbard, north of the European Arctic mainland, to central Norway.

Long-term and continuous observations of mesospheric–lower thermospheric winds are rare, but they are important to investigate climatological changes at these altitudes on timescales of several years, covering a solar cycle and longer. Such long time series are a natural heritage of the mesosphere–lower thermosphere climate, and they are valuable to compare climate models or long-term runs of general circulation models (GCMs). Here we present a climatological comparison of wind observations from six meteor radars at two conjugate latitudes to validate the corresponding mean winds and atmospheric diurnal and semidiurnal tides from three GCMs, namely the Ground-to-Topside Model of Atmosphere and Ionosphere for Aeronomy (GAIA), the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Extension (Specified Dynamics) (WACCM-X(SD)), and the Upper Atmosphere ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic (UA-ICON) model. Our results indicate that there are interhemispheric differences in the seasonal characteristics of the diurnal and semidiurnal tide. There are also some differences in the mean wind climatologies of the models and the observations. Our results indicate that GAIA shows reasonable agreement with the meteor radar observations during the winter season, whereas WACCM-X(SD) shows better agreement with the radars for the hemispheric zonal summer wind reversal, which is more consistent with the meteor radar observations. The free-running UA-ICON tends to show similar winds and tides compared to WACCM-X(SD).

Summary: The Martian crustal dichotomy (MCD) between the southern highlands and the northern lowlands is the planet’s most ancient crustal structure, but its origins and evolution remain enigmatic. Understanding of the MCD comes largely from present-day and shallow crustal constraints. Lacking ancient and deeper constraints, hypotheses for the origin of the MCD range from an early giant impact, partial melting from sustained mantle convection, or some combination. We investigate with seismological modeling the best-preserved case of the “antipodal effect”—energy from an impact that concentrates and induces uplift and fracturing promoting volcanism at its antipode—the Hellas crater and the Alba Patera volcano on Mars. The volcano is latitudinally offset ∼2° (∼119 km) from the expected antipode, and we explore whether the MCD can explain this deflection. Variations across the MCD in topography, thickness, and composition have only minor effects. Simulations capable of sufficiently decelerating southern surface waves require the presence of 2%–5% more partial melt in the southern highlands. As the age of impact ca. 4 billion years ago post-dates the formation of the MCD, our partial melting results thus imply that, with or without an early giant impact, the MCD was modified by mantle convection in order to supply enough heat for crustal melts for several hundreds of millions of years after Mars formation.

A new cyclostratigraphic climate record for a Cryogenian banded iron formation in Australia provides evidence for orbital forcing of ice sheet advance and retreat cycles during Snowball Earth.

The authors present a high-resolution palaeomagnetic record for a Late Cretaceous limestone in Italy. They claim that their record robustly shows a ~12° true polar wander oscillation between 86 and 78 Ma, with the greatest excursion at 84–82 Ma.

Computational methods have made progress in improving classification accuracy and throughput of pathology workflows, but lack of interpretability remains a barrier to clinical integration. Here, the authors present an approach for predicting clinically-relevant molecular phenotypes from whole-slide histopathology images using human-interpretable image features.

Summary:. Cross facial nerve grafts (CFNGs) are one of the most ubiquitous and time-honored surgical tools used in facial reanimation. They may be used for targeting different mimetic muscles in the subacute setting as well as to innervate newly placed muscle flaps in varied facial subunits. In our experience, when used specifically for smile reanimation in two-stage strategies with either traditional “babysitting” approaches in nerve transfers or free functional muscle transfers, the second stage may present some challenges in CFNG identification as well as injury to the previously banked nerve graft. We present some technical modifications in the first-stage CFNG inset that can make the second stage easier and safer. These modifications include: (1) marking the course of the nerve graft with surgical metal clips and inserting loose circumferential sutures throughout the distal course of the nerve in the recipient area to avoid displacement; (2) transferring the nerve graft through the nasal sills rather than lips, protecting it from damage during insertion of free functional muscle transfer; and (3) routing the nerve from the lateral nose to the preauricular area over the zygomatic arch, allowing easier dissection and banking of adequate graft length to provide tension-free coaptation with the flexibility of nerve coaptation in variable positions.

The pharmaceutical industry is going through a significant change to adopt smart manufacturing for more integrated supply chains and improved sustainability. Today's competitive market demands have put pressure on healthcare systems to take a comprehensive assessment of the drug life cycle, its environmental effect, industrial use of energy and resources, supply chain, and impact on end-users. The exploitation of emerging Industry 4.0 technologies will allow a sustainable process design and personalised health care system through the realisation of digital twins, which could transform the pharmaceutical sector to be more flexible, robust, adaptive, and smart. A significant level of research and development has been applied to pharmaceutical manufacturing especially in existing, outdated design and scale-up paradigms in isolated unit operations. However, addressing the key challenges in pharmaceutical manufacturing requires whole systems approaches to incorporate Industry 4.0 concepts.This paper aims to share the latest development of an advanced digital twin of a continuous wet granulation and tableting process at The University of Sheffield. These include the delivery of a digital platform consisting of an Advanced Process Control system (APC), mechanistic model platform and industrial IoT platform for data analytics and visualisation. The combined solution aligns with the concepts of Industry 4.0 by providing a digital twin, cloud integration, sophisticated statistical, as well as hybrid and mechanistic models. The models are in turn, used for soft-sensors, Model Predictive Control and Optimisation algorithms to predict and control product Quality Attributes. The potential application of digital twins in the pharmaceutical industry will also be explored.

In this study we explore the seasonal variability of the mean winds and diurnal and semidiurnal tidal amplitude and phases, as well as the Reynolds stress components during 2019, utilizing meteor radars at six Southern Hemisphere locations ranging from midlatitudes to polar latitudes. These include Tierra del Fuego, King Edward Point on South Georgia island, King Sejong Station, Rothera, Davis, and McMurdo stations. The year 2019 was exceptional in the Southern Hemisphere, due to the occurrence of a rare minor stratospheric warming in September. Our results show a substantial longitudinal and latitudinal seasonal variability of mean winds and tides, pointing towards a wobbling and asymmetric polar vortex. Furthermore, the derived momentum fluxes and wind variances, utilizing a recently developed algorithm, reveal a characteristic seasonal pattern at each location included in this study. The longitudinal and latitudinal variability of vertical flux of zonal and meridional momentum is discussed in the context of polar vortex asymmetry, spatial and temporal variability, and the longitude and latitude dependence of the vertical propagation conditions of gravity waves. The horizontal momentum fluxes exhibit a rather consistent seasonal structure between the stations, while the wind variances indicate a clear seasonal behavior and altitude dependence, showing the largest values at higher altitudes during the hemispheric winter and two variance minima during the equinoxes. Also the hemispheric summer mesopause and the zonal wind reversal can be identified in the wind variances.

Abstract Background Interventions designed to support children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) can be time consuming, needing involvement of outside experts. Social Stories™ are a highly personalised intervention aiming to give children with ASC social information or describing an otherwise difficult situation or skill. This can be delivered daily by staff in education settings. Studies examining Social Story™ use have yielded mostly positive results but have largely been single case studies with a lack of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Despite this numerous schools are utilising Social Stories™, and a fully powered RCT is timely. Methods A multi-site pragmatic cluster RCT comparing care as usual with Social Stories™ and care as usual. This study will recruit 278 participants (aged 4–11) with a clinical diagnosis of ASC, currently attending primary school in the North of England. Approximately 278 school based staff will be recruited to provide school based information about participating children with approximately 140 recruited to deliver the intervention. The study will be cluster randomised by school. Potential participants will be screened for eligibility prior to giving informed consent. Follow up data will be collected at 6 weeks and 6 months post randomisation and will assess changes in participants’ social responsiveness, goal based outcomes, social and emotional health. The primary outcome measure is the Social Responsiveness Scale Second Edition (SRS-2) completed by school based staff at 6 months. Approvals have been obtained from the University of York’s Research Governance Committee, Research Ethics Committee and the Health Research Authority. Study results will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated to participating families, educational staff, local authority representatives, community groups and Patient and Participant Involvement representatives. Suggestions will be made to NICE about treatment evidence dependent on findings. Discussion This study addresses a much used but currently under researched intervention and results will inform school based support for primary school children with a diagnosis of ASC. Trial registration The trial is registered on the ISRCTN registry (registration number: ISRCTN11634810 ). The trial was retrospectively registered on 23rd April 2019.

Abstract The pathobiology of in situ pulmonary thrombosis in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infection is incompletely characterized. In human pulmonary artery endothelial cells (HPAECs), hypoxia increases neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally downregulated 9 (NEDD9) and induces expression of a prothrombotic NEDD9 peptide (N9P) on the extracellular plasma membrane surface. We hypothesized that the SARS‐CoV‐2–ARDS pathophenotype involves increased pulmonary endothelial N9P. Paraffin‐embedded autopsy lung specimens were acquired from patients with SARS‐CoV‐2–​​​​​​ARDS (n = 13), ARDS from other causes (n = 10), and organ donor controls (n = 5). Immunofluorescence characterized the expression of N9P, fibrin, and transcription factor 12 (TCF12), a putative binding target of SARS‐CoV‐2 and known transcriptional regulator of NEDD9. We performed RNA‐sequencing on normal HPAECs treated with normoxia or hypoxia (0.2% O2) for 24 h. Immunoprecipitation‐liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry (IP‐LC‐MS) profiled protein–protein interactions involving N9P relevant to thrombus stabilization. Triassic volcanic rocks, including basalts and dacites, were drilled from Meiji Atoll in the South China Sea (SCS), which represents a rifted slice from the active continental margin along the Cathaysia Block. In this study, we present apatite and whole rock geochemistry of Meiji dacites to decipher their petrogenesis. Apatite geochronology yielded U-Pb ages of 204–221 Ma, which are identical to zircon U-Pb ages within uncertainty and thus corroborate the formation of the Meiji volcanic rocks during the Late Triassic. Whole rock major elements suggest that Meiji dacites mainly belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. They display enriched patterns in light rare earth elements (LREE) and flat patterns in heavy rare earth elements (HREE). They show enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements (LILE) and negative anomalies in Eu, Sr, P, Nb, Ta, and Ti. The dacites have initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7094–0.7113, εNd(t) values of -5.9–-5.4 and εHf(t) values of -2.9–-1.7, whereas the apatite has relatively higher initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.71289–0.71968) and similar εNd(t) (-8.13–-4.56) values. The dacites have homogeneous Pb isotopes, with initial 206Pb/204Pb of 18.73–18.87, 207Pb/204Pb of 15.75–15.80, and 208Pb/204Pb of 38.97–39.17. Both psychedelic drug experiences and near-death experiences can occasion changes in perspectives on death and dying, but there have been few direct comparisons of these phenomena. This study directly compared psychedelic occasioned and non-drug experiences which altered individuals' beliefs about death. Individuals who reported an experience that altered their beliefs about death occasioned by either a psychedelic drug or a near-death or other non-ordinary experience completed an online survey. Circumstances of the experience, mystical and near-death subjective features, changes in attitudes about death, and other persisting effects were evaluated. The study sample (n = 3192) included five groups: non-drug near-death or other non-ordinary experiences (n = 933), and drug experiences occasioned by lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) (n = 904), psilocybin (n = 766), ayahuasca (n = 282), or N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) (n = 307). Analyses of differences in experiences were adjusted statistically for demographic differences between groups. Compared to the psychedelic groups, the non-drug group was more likely to report being unconscious, clinically dead, and that their life was in imminent danger. The groups were remarkably similar in the reported changes in death attitudes attributed to the experience, including a reduced fear of death and high ratings of positive persisting effects and personal meaning, spiritual significance, and psychological insight. Although both psychedelic and non-drug participants showed robust increases on standardized measures of mystical and near-death experiences, these measures were significantly greater in the psychedelic participants. Non-drug participants were more likely to rate their experiences as the single most meaningful of their lives. Comparing across psychedelic substances, ayahuasca and DMT groups tended report stronger and more positive enduring consequences of the experience than the psilocybin and LSD groups, which were largely indistinguishable. These data provide a detailed characterization and comparison of psychedelic occasioned and non-drug experiences that changed attitudes about death and suggest the importance of future prospective psychedelic administration studies.

Abstract Since the Archean, secular change in orogenic style is demonstrated through evolution of metamorphic conditions and geochemical proxies. Linked to orogenic style is the amount of crustal thickening and elevation, whereas orogenic vigor is related to the supercontinent cycle. An array of Proterozoic orogens spanned the assembly of supercontinents Columbia and Rodinia, but the vigor of orogenesis is debated, with proposals for both Mesoproterozoic quiescence and climax. We show mid‐Proterozoic orogenesis occurred globally and was broadly continuous; furthermore, orogens exhibit elevated metamorphic thermobaric ratios with large volumes of high‐temperature felsic magmatic rocks. These features reflect higher mantle heat flux leading to increased mid‐crustal flow and lower elevation. In this context, proposals that geochemical proxies for crustal thickness record orogenic quiescence are inconsistent with the geological record. Alternatively, secular change in crustal thickness is attributed to orogenic style, namely the prevalence of hot, thin, and low orogens in the mid‐Proterozoic.

Abstract Severe space weather was identified as a risk to the UK in 2010 as part of a wider review of natural hazards triggered by the societal disruption caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in April of that year. To support further risk assessment by government officials, and at their request, we developed a set of reasonable worst‐case scenarios and first published them as a technical report in 2012 (current version published in 2020). Each scenario focused on a space weather environment that could disrupt a particular national infrastructure such as electric power or satellites, thus, enabling officials to explore the resilience of that infrastructure against severe space weather through discussions with relevant experts from other parts of government and with the operators of that infrastructure. This approach also encouraged us to focus on the environmental features that are key to generating adverse impacts. In this paper, we outline the scientific evidence that we have used to develop these scenarios, and the refinements made to them as new evidence emerged. We show how these scenarios are also considered as an ensemble so that government officials can prepare for a severe space weather event, during which many or all of the different scenarios will materialize. Finally, we note that this ensemble also needs to include insights into how public behavior will play out during a severe space weather event and hence the importance of providing robust, evidence‐based information on space weather and its adverse impacts.

Anopheles mosquitoes have transmitted Plasmodium parasites for millions of years, yet it remains unclear whether they suffer fitness costs to infection. Here we report that the fecundity of virgin and mated females of two important vectors-Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles stephensi-is not affected by infection with Plasmodium falciparum, demonstrating that these human malaria parasites do not inflict this reproductive cost on their natural mosquito hosts. Additionally, parasite development is not impacted by mating status. However, in field studies using different P. falciparum isolates in Anopheles coluzzii, we find that Mating-Induced Stimulator of Oogenesis (MISO), a female reproductive gene strongly induced after mating by the sexual transfer of the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), protects females from incurring fecundity costs to infection. MISO-silenced females produce fewer eggs as they become increasingly infected with P. falciparum, while parasite development is not impacted by this gene silencing. Interestingly, previous work had shown that sexual transfer of 20E has specifically evolved in Cellia species of the Anopheles genus, driving the co-adaptation of MISO. Our data therefore suggest that evolution of male-female sexual interactions may have promoted Anopheles tolerance to P. falciparum infection in the Cellia subgenus, which comprises the most important malaria vectors.

This study assembles DNA adenine methylomes for 93 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) isolates from seven lineages paired with fully-annotated, finished, de novo assembled genomes. Integrative analysis yielded four key results. First, methyltransferase allele-methylome mapping corrected methyltransferase variant effects previously obscured by reference-based variant calling. Second, heterogeneity analysis of partially active methyltransferase alleles revealed that intracellular stochastic methylation generates a mosaic of methylomes within isogenic cultures, which we formalize as ‘intercellular mosaic methylation’ (IMM). Mutation-driven IMM was nearly ubiquitous in the globally prominent Beijing sublineage. Third, promoter methylation is widespread and associated with differential expression in the ΔhsdM transcriptome, suggesting promoter HsdM-methylation directly influences transcription. Finally, comparative and functional analyses identified 351 sites hypervariable across isolates and numerous putative regulatory interactions. This multi-omic integration revealed features of methylomic variability in clinical isolates and provides a rational basis for hypothesizing the functions of DNA adenine methylation in MTBC physiology and adaptive evolution.

Microhaplotypes are the subject of significant interest in the forensics community as a promising multi-purpose forensic DNA marker for human identification. Microhaplotype markers are composed of multiple SNPs in close proximity, such that a single NGS read can simultaneously genotype the individual SNPs and phase them in aggregate to determine the associated donor haplotype. Abundant throughout the human genome, numerous recent studies have sought to discover and rank microhaplotype markers according to allelic diversity within and among populations. Microhaplotypes provide an appealing alternative to STR markers for human identification and mixture deconvolution, but can also be optimized for ancestry inference or combined with phenotype SNPs for prediction of externally visible characteristics in a multiplex NGS assay. Designing and evaluating panels of microhaplotypes is complicated by the lack of a convenient database of all published data, as well as the lack of population allele frequency data spanning disparate marker collections. We present MicroHapDB, a comprehensive database of published microhaplotype marker and frequency data, as a tool to advance the development of microhaplotype-based human forensics capabilities. We also present population allele frequencies derived from 26 global population samples for all microhaplotype markers published to date, facilitating the design and interpretation of custom multi-source panels. We submit MicroHapDB as a resource for community members engaged in marker discovery, population studies, assay development, and panel and kit design.
